Welcome to a special edition of
Albany Technical College offers high school students in our community the opportunity to participate in Dual Enrollment, a program that allows them to earn college credits while still in high school. This program provides several benefits to students, including a head start on their college education, financial savings, and smoother transitions into college.
One of the most significant advantages of dual enrollment is the financial savings for both parents and students. By taking college courses while still in high school, students can reduce their future tuition expenses, making higher education more accessible and affordable. Additionally, dual enrollment students often transition more smoothly into college as they are already familiar with the academic rigor and expectations of higher education.
Albany Technical College has established pathways and
partnerships with four-year institutions to facilitate seamless transitions for students. These pathways allow students to transfer their earned credits towards the pursuit of a four-year degree, providing them with a strong foundation and a smoother college experience. Our partnerships with these institutions ensure that our students have access to high-quality education and opportunities to further their academic and professional goals.
Under the “Essential 18” initiative, Albany Technical College encourages all high schools within our service delivery area to sign up all eligible students for a minimum 18 transferable college credit hours. By doing so, we hope to increase the benefits of dual enrollment for every student with at least a 2.0-grade point average, regardless of their future academic or career ambitions.
We encourage parents, students, and educators to explore the benefits of dual enrollment and take advantage of this incredible opportunity. For more information, please visit our website or contact our admissions office.
ADVANTAGES OF STARTING AT A TWO-YEAR COLLEGE: A Pathway to Success and Savings
The decision of where to begin one’s higher education journey is crucial and often fraught with confusion. Many students grapple with the choice between starting at a two-year college or diving directly into a four-year university. Take a look at a few of the advantages of beginning one’s academic journey at a two-year campus like Albany Technical College, which offers a cost-effective, flexible, and supportive pathway to a four-year degree.
COST SAVINGS
One of the most significant advantages of attending Albany Technical College is the reduced cost of tuition and fees compared to four-year universities. On average, community college tuition can be less than half the cost of tuition at public four-year institutions. According to the College Board, for the 2020-2021 academic year, the average tuition and fees for public two-year colleges were $3,770, while public four-year universities charged $10,560 for in-state students. This significant difference in cost allows students to complete their core courses at a fraction of the price, saving thousands of dollars in the process.
STARTING AT A TWO-YEAR COLLEGE LIKE ALBANY TECHNICAL COLLEGE
• Smaller Class Sizes and Personalized Attention: Two-year colleges often have smaller class sizes compared to four-year universities, providing students with more personalized attention from faculty. This fosters a supportive learning environment that can help students transition from high school to college or even from one career to another.
• Flexible Scheduling: Many two-year colleges offer a variety of class schedules, including evening, weekend, and online courses. This flexibility allows students to balance their education with work, family, and other personal commitments, making it more accessible for a wider range of students.

• Student Support Services: Two-year colleges typically offer a range of student support services, such as academic advising, tutoring, and career counseling. These resources can help students make informed decisions about their educational and career paths and provide assistance in overcoming academic challenges.
• Opportunity to Explore Majors: Attending a two-year college can give students the chance to explore different majors and career paths without the pressure and expense of committing to a specific program at a four-year institution. This exploration can lead to a more informed choice of major when transferring to a four-year university.
• Building a Strong Academic Foundation: Two-year colleges focus on providing students with a solid foundation in general education courses. This foundation can help students develop the critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills necessary for success in their chosen field and in their future careers.
PATHWAY AGREEMENTS
Albany Technical College, like many other two-year institutions, has pathway agreements in place with four-year colleges and universities. These agreements ensure that credits earned at Albany Technical College are directly transferable to partnering institutions. Students can then seamlessly continue their education at a four-year university without losing credits or time. This not only saves money but also allows students to complete their bachelor’s degree in a timely manner.
PATHWAY OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE
Dual-enrollment programs offer high school students the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school. Albany Technical College provides this opportunity, enabling students to get ahead in their academic pursuits. Dual-enrolled students can graduate high school with a diploma and an associate degree, which can be directly transferred to a four-year university, saving both time and money.
Non-traditional students, such as older individuals seeking to complete a degree or change careers, also benefit from the flexible and costeffective options offered by two-year colleges like Albany Technical College. These students can complete their core classes at a lower cost before transitioning to a four-year institution to pursue their desired major.
TRANSIENT STUDENTS
During summer breaks, students attending four-year universities can take advantage of the lower cost and flexibility offered by two-year colleges. As transient students, they can enroll in courses at institutions like Albany Technical College and transfer those credits back to their home university. This cost-effective approach allows students to stay on track and save money while completing their degree.
In conclusion, starting at a two-year college, such as Albany Technical College, offers a multitude of advantages for those seeking to pursue a four-year degree. The cost savings, pathway agreements, and opportunities for dual-enrolled, non-traditional, and transient students make it an attractive option for individuals looking to minimize debt while pursuing higher education.
Albany Technical College provides a clear path to success for students, ensuring that they receive a quality education without incurring excessive debt. We encourage students and families to explore the benefits of starting at a two-year college before transitioning to a four-year university. By taking advantage of this pathway, students can achieve their educational goals while securing their financial future.

“We wanted to celebrate their outstanding achievements and bring attention to their accomplishments,” said Barbara Brown, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. “Albany Technical College is extremely proud of the achievements of the Dual Enrolled students and eagerly anticipates hearing about their future successes.”
With the Georgia Dual Enrollment program, all Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) colleges are witnessing success,

Our dedicated students have demonstrated the immense value of dual enrollment programs, paving the way for a brighter future for themselves and others.
Dual enrollment at Albany Technical College equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to excel in their chosen fields while simultaneously earning both high school and college credits. This innovative approach to education expedites their academic journey and increases their chances of success in the workforce.
Statistics reveal the undeniable benefits of dual enrollment programs for students. In Georgia, 88% of dual enrollment students graduate from high school, compared to the state average of 83% (source: Georgia Department of Education). Furthermore, research conducted by the Community College Research Center (CCRC) indicates that dual-enrollment students are more likely to enroll in college and complete their degrees. In fact, 71% of dual enrollment students enroll in college immediately after high school, compared to 55% of their non-dual enrollment peers.
In Georgia, dual enrollment programs have seen a significant increase in participation. The University System of Georgia reported a 4.4% increase in dual enrollment students between 2018-2019 and 2019-2020. This growth illustrates the rising recognition and appreciation for the potential of dual enrollment programs to shape the future of education and workforce development.
Albany Technical College remains committed to providing high-quality dual enrollment opportunities for our students, and their achievements continually inspire us.
