What does an MA graduate look like? Diverse in every way, yet sharing surprisingly similar qualities. As early as kindergarten, The Montgomery Academy looks ahead to the kinds of qualities a young adult needs to succeed. Programs are structured and experiences are designed around creating life-long learners who challenge themselves. Co-curricular involvement is planned to champion honor, ethics, diversity and service. We do all this—but if you talk to our Upper School students they’ll tell you how they play the part: on the stage, in the studio, on the field, in the community, and in the classroom.

THIS IS THE JUNIOR LEAGUE

From the Editor It’s 2022 – we survived another one, guys. Whether you just had a fantastic year or were on the back seat of the struggle bus for most of 2021, a new year brings so much hope and opportunity. It’s a chance to change what you don’t like and optimize the things you do. It’s a time to reflect on what matters to you and how you can make a difference. The Junior League of Montgomery recognizes the influence one person can have and knows we are even stronger together. The mission of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. is to promote voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. As you flip through these pages, you will see this mission being played out all over our community. In this issue, we highlight some great Education & Training events, which propels the League’s purpose of adding value to its members in the fulfilment of The Junior League Mission (and they’re fun, too). We feature several community placements such as Dream Court, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, and more. It is so cool to see what our League members are doing in the community. If you missed the Holiday Market, check out our feature for a recap. Since last year’s Holiday Market was held virtually, it was so great to return to the Multiplex this year for shopping, fun and fellowship! I’d encourage you to check out the information on the upcoming Rummage Sale and Women’s Leadership Summit. Mark your calendars for both don’t-miss events! We have had a great start to 2022 in the Junior League of Montgomery and this is just the beginning. I encourage you to dig in and get involved this year – try something you haven’t tried before and introduce yourself to someone new. This could be your best year yet! Sincerely, Peyton Flowers Editor of League Logs

From the President Thank you for supporting The Junior League of Montgomery (JLM) and the amazing women from the River Region who volunteer in our organization. We appreciate all of our corporate sponsors, JLM members, and community partners for your support and being able to adapt with us as JLM moves towards our 100th year of service. Our members started the new league year on June 1st, 2021, enthusiastic and ready to serve. The Community Placements of Brantwood, Dream Court, and Service Dogs of Alabama planned and organized activities for members to do throughout the league year. Hispanic Outreach Leadership and Action (HOLA) assisted with the HOLA Community Festival. Members serving with the Distinguished Young Women committee, Friendship Mission, Impact Alabama Montgomery continue to provide support and enthusiasm to their partner organization. Montgomery Museum of Fine Art (MMFA) committee members created a sensory room at MMFA, and Human Trafficking completed vital training sessions. College and Career Night and Holiday Market were able to provide in-person events, with attendees and participants complimenting the dedication of JLM members to skillfully maneuver a safe and enthusiastic experience. Our 96th league year had a great beginning, and we will have a fantastic transition into our 97th league year. Our members are looking forward to the Women’s Leadership Summit, Rummage Sale, and ending the league year welcoming new members, community partners, and sponsors joining our pathway to JLM’s 100th year! Forty-five of Alabama’s brightest stars were shining on the stage for the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama competition on January 21-22, 2022, at Frazer United Methodist Church. The young women competed in the categories of self-expression, fitness, scholarship, and talent. This year’s winner was Julianne Abenoja from Jefferson County. e had the pleasure of serving with Service Dogs Alabama again this year. The organization provides medical and psychological assistance dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities as well as facility intervention dogs for schools and courtrooms. Our placement provided hospitality to the new handlers who are being placed with their service dog. Last

year, JLM committee members decorated and furnished PODS cabins where the guests stay during the weeklong placement and training process. A PODS ribbon-cutting was held in November 2021 for the SDA Board. In August of 2021, eleven veterans received their dogs. Members of Junior League Montgomery provided and served meals during their stay at SDA. Our committee also helped to prepare the PODS with welcome baskets for new handlers. Funding

from the JLM placement also went toward sponsoring the placement of one specifically trained facility dog at Pine Level Elementary School in Autauga County. We look forward to interacting with the recipients, while making them feel comfortable and welcome during their stay on the SDA campus. Thanks to everyone on our committee for your dedication in serving this wonderful organization this year.

he Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) placement’s assignment was to create a multipurpose space to accommodate a variety of patrons, including those on the Autistic Spectrum, with sensory disorders, and breastfeeding mothers. For some Junior League members, this assignment had a personal connection. Committee Chair Tamika Watkins said, “I have firsthand experience of the challenges that are coupled with sensory disorders. My nephews, whom I adore, suffer from sensory disorders. When triggered, they can become overwhelmed with crowds and processing information. I was able to draw on my personal experiences to create a plan for the space that would help families and children.” MMFA is full of beautiful artwork however, for those on the spectrum, the multitude of colors, shapes, and patterns can be overwhelming. The goal was to create a multipurpose space that was soothing and quiet.

24 Junior League of Montgomery ~ League Logs ~ Spring 2022

The ladies on this placement were excited to fulfill the assignment. For a brief time, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the project to a halt but, being flexible and understanding is key to being a volunteer. The placement shifted from being a Summer Project to a Fall project.

JLM FEATURED COMMUNITY PLACEMENTS The women who helped on this project were amazing Belinda Davis, Kelly Julian, Karen Laneaux, Kimberlin Love, Maria Robinson, Bridgett Tyner-Smith, and Brandy Young. The project began with applying a fresh coat of white paint to keep the space calm and bright. After painting, the next step focused on furniture and decor. The room was outfitted with tactical items to accommodate the patrons that MMFA aims to serve. Things like sensory liquid tiles that change colors when you step on them for those with special needs and a large comfortable couch for breastfeeding mothers are some of the new features for the room. Additionally, the team made sure there was enough space for a stroller to enter the room unencumbered. Once they were done, Tamika called her nephew. Guess what? He approved of the space.

Baskets of Love O

n a chilly December evening in 2021, League members met to fellowship and fill 49 laundry baskets with household items and toiletries for families in need during the holiday season, known as Baskets of Love. Baskets of Love supports a program of HandsOn River Region, Christmas Clearinghouse. Established in 1980, the Christmas Clearinghouse eliminates duplication of services through direct coordination of Christmas-giving programs within the community. Agencies provide HandsOn River Region with a list of those in need of assistance, which is then entered into a single database so community Christmas programs such as Toys for Tots, can work with Christmas Clearinghouse to

By Tasha Cooper

ensure everyone in need of holiday assistance receives it. The Christmas Clearinghouse coordinates and matches those in the River Region who need help during the holiday season with individuals, organizations, and businesses who want to provide for the needy. The Christmas Clearinghouse touches the lives of approximately 7,000 individuals annually, bringing in over $300,000 in community impact through giving. HandsOn River Region uses a threestep approach to assist those in need during the holiday season. 1. Eliminate Duplication of Services- The Christmas Clearinghouse program eliminates duplication of services through direct coordination with similar giving programs in the community.

28 Junior League of Montgomery ~ League Logs ~ Spring 2022

Partner agencies provide HandsOn River Region with a list of those in need, which is then entered into a single database to ensure all who need assistance receive assistance. 2. Adoption- Schools, clubs, running groups, corporations, or Sunday school classes can adopt a needy family and divide the shopping to multiply the joy. HandsOn River Region can match “adopters” with a family in need and provide a wish list for a family. 3. Donation- Resources are limited for many service agencies, and many families in need will not receive assistance through a Christmas giving program. The Christmas Clearinghouse goes one step further by providing aid to those families who do not receive aid through a partner community Christmas giving program.

When HandsOn River Region cannot find an agency, group, or individual to adopt a family, they use funds raised to provide gift cards to needy families, which cannot be used for alcohol, tobacco, or firearms. Food Stamps and other types of public assistance do not allow funds to be used to purchase essential items a household needs to survive, such as laundry detergent, toothpaste, and toilet paper. In addition to gift cards, HandsOn River Region asks the community to provide baskets with household items to the program,

so those who receive gift cards do not have to choose between buying essential household goods with the funds they receive to purchase Christmas gifts through Christmas Clearinghouse. Items normally placed into baskets include toothpaste, deodorant, diapers, wipes, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, shampoo, and feminine hygiene products. The Junior League of Montgomery adds additional items to baskets, such as candles, robes, blankets, cookie kits, and picture

frames to add a special touch and give a little extra to those in need. HandsOn River Region was founded in 1974 as the Voluntary Action Center following a community-wide study conducted by the Junior League of Montgomery and the Community Council of the Montgomery Area United Way. The Junior League of Montgomery saw the need for a centralized hub for volunteerism in the Montgomery area and has supported HandsOn River Region’s programs, including Christmas Clearinghouse, since inception.

A

fter a year of innovation and challenges, College and Career Night was back in person. On Monday, September 13th, the 37th annual College and Career Night was held at the Montgomery Multiplex at

Cramton Bowl. The College and Career Night committee intensely engaged over 40 high schools in 10 counties, promoting the vital resources offered at College and Career Night. We successfully welcomed over two thousand attendees by implementing

32 Junior League of Montgomery ~ League Logs ~ Spring 2022

Adding to the resources offered during this important event, attendees were able to enter into two scholarship drawings from Potential Magazine and The Junior League of Montgomery. After a randomly selected drawing, the Junior League of Montgomery awarded Jalen Davis, a twelfth-grade student at Stanhope Elmore High School, a $500 scholarship.

College and Career Night offers students a comprehensive outlook of available opportunities for them post-high school. After a year of extreme challenges for students and parents, we knew how important it was to organize this event for our students and parents. This event is the largest of its kind in our area. Serving the Alabama Black Belt community, one of the most under-resourced communities in our nation, College and Career Night offers resources to students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to receive them all free of charge. Figuring out how to pay for college is often the most significant challenge for students wishing to attend their dream school. For this reason, attendees were able to access

JUNIOR LEAGUE COMMUNITY EVENTS 2021- 2022 A Guide to Scholarships and Financial Aid, a booklet published by The Junior League of Montgomery that gives a comprehensive guide to scholarships and financial aid from colleges and universities across the southeast region. This guide was offered digitally, allowing students and parents to access over 200 pages of information quickly. In addition to the guide, College and Career Night sponsor, Auburn University of Montgomery offered on-site scholarship and financial aid workshops A new feature for College and Career Night, attendees were able to highlight this moment using a 360 photobooth sponsored by Councilor Marche Johnson. We also featured new exhibitors such as Alfa Insurance and Max Credit Union, allowing attendees to explore new career opportunities posthigh school.

34 Junior League of Montgomery ~ League Logs ~ Spring 2022

Even with the challenges presented, College and Career Night achieved its goals of assisting students with the opportunity to choose their future. Led by Chair Amerika Blair, committee members worked diligently to promote participation through social media, distributing flyers and posters, recruiting participation from

colleges, universities, and careers throughout the southeastern region, and securing sponsorships and donations from the community. The effort and support shown by College and Career Night committee members allowed another year of great success.

“My hope is that this event continues to spread for years to come. Supporting our students’ goals is extremely important. I’m proud to have the opportunity to serve our students, parents and educators alongside like-minded women,” said Amerika Blair.

T

he Junior League of Montgomery could not have been more thrilled to welcome shoppers to the 33rd Annual Holiday Market on October 6-9 2021! To many River Region natives, Holiday Market indicates the beginning of the holiday season and all of the warmth and joy that comes along with it.

By Courtney Curenton Baker

Like so many things, this year looked a little different - but it was certainly no less merry or bright! With over 70 merchants providing both new, exciting items as well as triedand-true favorites, the 33rd Annual Holiday Market is one that will be remembered for years to come as a joyous return to in-person shopping. Our market has become one of the most popular events in the area and draws thousands of shoppers annually. As a result, merchants come back year after year and our roster fills up quickly. In fact, many spots are officially reserved for the following year before Holiday Market even concludes! Holiday Market planning begins many months in advance, but that does not make transforming a 70,000 square foot empty room into a holiday shopper’s dream an easy task! Holiday Market relies on Junior League of Montgomery members and community volunteers to pull off its shopping event, with set-up beginning on Monday morning and wrapping up in time to welcome those attending our Preview Party on Wednesday evening. Amongst the time spent setting up, particularly notable is the time generously donated by Jerry

JUNIOR LEAGUE COMMUNITY EVENTS Thrash of Rosemont Gardens to transform our Holiday Market lobby and 22-foot Christmas tree into the absolute vision of holiday spirit. This year the tree featured all of the colors of the season and was completed by dazzling reindeer leaping out almost as if to say “Santa’s coming!”- which, he actually was! Shoppers of Preview Party, Holiday Market’s early shopping showcase and sponsor appreciation event, had the chance to mingle with Santa whilst earning their spot on the ‘nice’ list by supporting the Junior League of Montgomery. Preview Party night is a fun opportunity for our League Sponsors and other attendees to have the first opportunity to browse the wares our merchants have on display and take home unique gifts for themselves and loved ones. This year’s preview night also featured exclusive Silent Auction items only accessible to attendees! A huge thanks to the hard work of the Silent Auction Committee, as well as the generosity of the bidders in attendance. Children and parents were able to have breakfast with Santa followed by photos with Santa and ended with decorating festive cookies. Santa was available to all children that attended the Market for a head start on those Christmas requests and photos. From fudge to home decor and clothes to fine jewelry, the 33rd Annual Holiday Market had something for everyone!

SATURDAY, APRIL 2 8 a.m. - 1 p.m Alcazar Shrine Temple The Junior League of Montgomery’s 65th Rummage Sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 2, 2022, from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Alcazar Shrine Temple. This is a special event in two ways for our Montgomery community. For many families in our community, JLM’s Rummage Sale provides them with a wonderful opportunity to purchase quality, gently-used or new items for their children, household goods and other items at bargain prices and the proceeds from the sale are returned to the community through projects and grants to nonprofits in our River Region home. To make sure the event is successful, members collect and donate items in the months leading up to the sale! Additionally, members can choose to donate through Community Cash. The League then donates Community Cash certificates to organizations that we already work with so that we can make sure those who need the items we have available at Rummage Sale have the ability to shop with us. Come shop with us for household items, furniture, linens, lamps, decorative items, art, children’s items and toys, holiday decorations, appliances, books, and tools. We hope to see you at the Rummage Sale in April!

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Sustainer of the Season J By Peyton Flowers

enny Thiessen hasn’t lived in Montgomery long, but that hasn’t stopped her from digging into her community and getting involved. She and her husband of 25 years, Doug, moved to Montgomery in 2007 from Texas. She transferred her membership from Junior League Lubbock to Junior League Montgomery. She credits getting involved with JLM to helping her adjust to her new city quickly. She says, “I made new friends and discovered places to serve in the community. I served a few community placements, such as Impact Alabama and Camp Smile A Mile. I served JLM in many in-league placements, including League Lines and Logs Editor, Communications Council VP and Nominating Chair. My favorite placement was as League Logs Editor. My secret dream was to be a magazine editor; because of JLM, I was able to achieve that dream!”

Not only has the League been a great resource to Jenny, but she has also been a wonderful asset to our league – in service and friendship to those she serves with. We are pleased to award her the title of Sustainer of the Season. Jenny knows the League helps develop the potential of women. She says, “I’ve been challenged to grow and learn new skills while serving the community and our members. Because of my membership in JLM, I have been asked to serve on other

nonprofit boards in Montgomery.” Jenny currently serves on the board of Montgomery Christian School and the River Region Council of Magic Moments. She also volunteers weekly at the Montgomery Cancer Center. Her advice to League members just starting out is to “Learn all you can about JLM. Attend meetings; talk to new people. Get to know the League President and Board of Directors. Work to discover areas where you

can serve. Do you have a secret dream? Figure out how JLM can help you achieve that dream. JLM gives members a safety net as they learn new skills. We are a team of women, helping the community and each other. “ In her spare time, Jenny enjoys traveling, reading and dining out. Please congratulate Jenny on this season’s Sustainer of the Season award!

Member Spotlight Susie Paul - Susie has interviewed five agencies for Community Council. As a fabulous lady in her 70s, Susie proves there is a place in the League for women of all ages. We can all find our niche. Susie is definitely a woman to watch.

Nicole Johnson - Nicole is a part of the Fund Development Committee, where she took this placement and RAN with it. She single-handedly raised over $4,000 for our League. Nicole asked questions, followed up and completed her placement with amazing results.

Jamecia Hassell - Jamecia is an astounding young lady ready to serve. She did an 8-hour shift in one day and then returned later for more provisional duties. She was on time and engaged throughout her entire shift.

Having grown up in Wetumpka and graduating from Saint James, she now splits her time between Birmingham and Wetumpka. Pratt has served in many Junior League roles in the past, including Public Affairs Chair, Membership VP, Nominating Committee and Governance and Bylaws Chair to name a few. She was awarded the Mary Colwick Award (for Service to the League) in Tuscaloosa and the Women to Watch Award in Birmingham.

WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE, PRATT! Becky Haynes is a transfer from Junior League of Winston-Salem, NC and a native of Monroeville, Alabama.
