01 Introduction Architecture in practice - Initial thoughts & general objectives The architectural internship is an excellent opportunity to expand and productively use the practical and theoretical knowledge acquired throughout my education as well as my previous professional experiences in France and Poland. This is also to get an insight into the workflow of a large and leading Danish company that is known for its flat hierarchy structure. The professional context gives me a possibility to actively participate in the real architectural life and design process, combining both technical and academic approaches. It is now my responsibility to learn as much as possible from this real context and use the architectural training as a tool to get to know practical aspects that are not a part of architectural education, such as among others: attending the meetings with clients or considering economical issues of the project. Working with people from different professions such as: landscape architects, constructors and architects will enable me to discover if the Integrated Design method acquired at AAU is applicable in real practice and in what sense is it different from what I have learned at Aalborg University. It could also be a great opportunity to investigate if beside advantages are there also some difficulties or challenges that are not that visible in the academic approach to Integrated Design method. Last but not least, it is important for my future to find myself in this very complex architectural profession. I would like to perform my future professional job with deeper understanding and clear position concerning the architectural quality and therefore I would like to use my training time to investigate this matter in details.

02 C.F. Møller Why C.F.Møller? - Company profile & direction for the internship C.F. Møller is one of the oldest and biggest Scandinavian practice that was funded in 1924 by Danish architect and later rector of School of Architecture in Aarhus: Christian Frederic Møller. Now the practice involves a wide range of expertise in architecture, landscape architecture, product design, space planning, logistics, management and others. In such a complex structure they manage to live up to client demands without disregarding their own ideals and keeping the quality of the architecture that Christian Frederic Møller initiated in his work. The quality is reflected in coherence and consistency of architecture as it is shown for instance in one of the earliest C.F. Møller’s projects: the University of Aarhus. The campus is a unique complex of homogenous yellow-brick buildings that includes student accommodation, offices, libraries workshops and teaching rooms. The buildings are placed orthogonally and thereby create small clusters, creating nice internal environments. Moreover the project is known for its great integration with the natural contours of the landscape. The good relation to the landscape makes it a part of the surroundings rather than something superimposed. Creating the buildings full of architectural qualities such as the University of Aarhus campus might be very challenging for architects who must constantly fight for every single detail in order to uphold the qualities of the buildings they are creating. Personally, the main reason for choosing C.F. Møller as my internship place was to investigate how the company manage to implement their ideals of ”simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness” [1] into their work. Apart from being an integral part of the architecture office team, as I mentioned before, I would like to focus on those very vague and general terms describing the architectural quality. In my internship report I will try to understand the true meaning of simple, clear and unpretentious, how those qualities are translated into architecture or engineering and why architects love to use those big words to describe their works.

Stating the problem - Summary of personal expectations My overall personal expectations of the internship are to get an insight into Danish working structure, gain knowledge how to cooperate with people having different experiences and backgrounds and finally find my way of approaching architectural qualities and learn on real examples: In what way the C.F. Møller’s ideals of simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness can be used to describe and create the architecture quality? During my stay at C.F.Møller I will answer this question on presented examples.

Internship theme: Architectural quality - Different understandings & personal approach Since the architectural quality is not clearly defined, hard to measure and a very vast topic which had been the subject of several architectural studies, I will limit my research to the C.F. Møller’s ideals of ”simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness” [1]. The main reason of this study is to develop my own understanding and position towards the architectural quality that would influence my future life as an architect. Therefore, I will not try to avoid being subjective. Nevertheless to prove my thoughts I will refer to two opinions related to architecture but coming from different backgrounds. C.F. Møllers ideals: simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness are very general and seem basic. Nevertheless these ideals have always been the qualities that I stand for in my architectural projects and would like to understand them deeply and make use of them in the future. I believe that architecture needs firm and sometimes basic principles that give architecture its true meaning and identity that is easily recognizable. Nonetheless, the terms describing architecture should truly reflect the reality and not just be a description that perfectly present the building but which deep down is a lie, like all false sell speeches. The truth in architecture could in my opinion be one of the most beautiful architecture quality and at the same time embody all three terms of simplicity clarity and unpretentiousness. The beauty of the tectonic truth in construction or in use of materials could be perfectly illustrated on Peter Zumthor’s Bruder Klaus Field Chapel. The way the chapel was constructed is denuded inside the very mysterious interior. The tree trunks that constituted the frame for concrete envelope were burned after the concrete had set leaving behind very mysterious and beautiful wooden pattern on charred walls and creating an absolutely breathless space. As Peter Zumthor has shown, what a good architecture work needs it is not flashy, obtrusive and artificially eye-catching features but qualities that reflects the truth and the human, his needs and especially speak the language that he understands, the language that relates to human’s senses, natural behaving or intuition. The Finnish architect J. Pallasmaa is one of the architects who claims that architecture has a very close relation to one’s life and morals: ”architecture has to address all the senses simultaneously and fuse our image of self with our experience of the world” [2]. According to his words and Peter Zumthor work I would like to create the architecture that is simple to understand and relate to and that tell the true story about construction and materials.

Since architecture could be understood in terms of applied art, it shouldn’t be the art for itself, it should be real. In these terms even the most innovative projects, like the Cenotaph for Isaac Newton project created by a visionary french architect Étienne-Louis Boullée in 1784 remains art and cannot be entirely called architecture because it lacks the real context. Therefore all those nice terms and ideals, that are a subject of my internship report, need at some point to be translated into architecture or engineering, into the language and shape that humans can understand. The fact that architecture should be real seems to be the most difficult and challenging aspect of architecture. As for architecture, the ideals of simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness could be reflected in the intuitive floorplan arrangement to facilitate the understanding of the building for a regular user or in use of materials respecting the site, surroundings and environment. As for engineering, the simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness reflects the wise way of using the materials, so there is no room for unnecessary elements of the structure and there is always a curiosity for finding the most efficient way of construction. This affects both lower investment costs as well as lower environmental impact. In that sense the simple and clear approach is not only someone’s belief or unquestionable opinion but has also a tangible proof in the reality. Quoting Cecil Belmond’s, artist, architect and engineer approach: ”I don’t want to undress architecture. I want to enrich it and add layers to it. Basically like in a gothic cathedral, where the ornament and the structure form an alliance.” [4], I understand simplicity of architecture or engineering not as removing features and making the final product boring but I understand it as a clear presentation of qualities that make the final work understandable because of its readable tectonic form. For my internship at C.F. Møller I was assigned to work with the architectural part of the team, design and carry out architectural tasks. That is also where I see myself in the future. Nevertheless, having my previous education experience in mind, I believe that finding the balance between artistic and technical approach would result in tectonic and honest architecture. Combination of both architectural and engineering understandings of simple, clear and unpretentious can lead to an exceptionally efficient and coherent result that adds up to the quality of the final design. All this because as Cecil Belmond’s said: “Good collaboration is an art” [4].

Time schedule The following timeline provides an overview of the company’s projects that I have been a part of. The timeline shows that some projects were very linear and had the beginning and the end (Lile Vildmose competition) but some were constantly reviewed. These projects are ongoing projects and are constantly changing. Therefore once there was a need for a change I had to introduce it in the drawings. As listed in the timeline, I also participated in the visit on the construction site of Vandkanten. Unfortunately, I was not a part of the team working on this project. Nevertheless I always appreciate being the witness of how architecture becomes a real life on the construction site. At the end of my internship I also participated in the visit on Vandkoncern site. The purpose of this visit was to collect all old materials and drawings of old existing buildings that needed to be modelled in 3d. In the Annex 2 you can see the photos from both visits.

03 Project description In the following section I will present all projects listed in the timeline (ill.04). As an intern at C.F.Møller architecture office I was assigned a vast array of different tasks and responsibilities dealing with almost every part of the design process, such as: sketching/idea development, drawing development including: concept diagrams; plan, section and elevation drawings or final presentation with its: final illustrations using hand sketches, final renders or presentation and folder layouts. I also assisted the introduction and final presentation meeting with the client concerning the competition; I participated in the conversations with landscape architect from the C.F. Møller office in Aarhus or I was involved in several meetings and discussions with real estate agents from Himmerland and engineers from COWI. All C.F. Møller’s projects that I was a part of are very different. Some of them required a lot of responsibility, such as Lille Vildmose competition, and some, such as Sofiendal Enge, less. Nevertheless, all projects in this report are presented and analyzed in terms of my internship theme of simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness. The purpose of it is to understand in what way the C.F. Møller’s ideals are reflected in their architecture work.

The area of the Sofiendal Enge project is divided into 3 typologies of buildings that differ in height, placement and type of occupant. Each typology relates to the ownership borders. The first one from the north is a 2-storey point block, furthermore a 2-storey single family row house, a 3-4-storey dense urban blocks and again a 2-storey point building block. All these typologies surround the green area situated in the middle of the complex.

My role: My tasks in this project were to model in 3d (Sketchup) the site and simple volumes of buildings on the basis of the prepared masterplan (ill.05), model in 3d (Sketchup) two types of row houses on the basis of prepared floorplans and render them out in different views. Architecture quality: The two types of row houses are assembled in a way to achieve the most diverse visual effect without changing the floorplan layout. For this reason, the two types of houses intertwine randomly and also every 2-3 houses are pushed in or out of the main elevation line. The floorplans were designed to avoid useless space for corridors. If necessary, the corridors constitute a functional and attractive space (f.ex. a workspace with a desk). The clarity of the floorplan, drawn without unnecessary spaces will have an influence on the user and the way he is using the house. Ergonomic layout of rooms and furniture will also affect the human’s wellbeing at home. It is therefore important to be precise and accurate in the design. Digtervejen apartment complex is located in an attractive but deserted for years area in Aalborg, about 5 km from the city center. The site is situated on top of the Skalborg Hill, in the middle of a built area with good transportation opportunities, both for car and bus or train.

The main issue of the site is its proximity to the main road with a lot of traffic. The solution for that was to build up a more closed off volume towards the street with a higher part facing the main roads intersection. The tower works as a dominant for the complex and its surroundings. The wall of buildings opens up towards the green courtyard with a revitalization of the traditional Danish concept of Kolonihaven. Kolonihaverne are the great opportunity to grow your own vegetables in the city. At the same time kolonihaverne play a large social role in the complex since they encourage people to go out and meet other residents. Another important part of the site is the southern green part of the site that has a potential to become an attractive public area – an oasis of urban nature hidden from traffic and noise. It could serve as a calm place open to public where inhabitants could relax and get in touch with the nature. All in all Digtervejen is an innovative concept for organic living, outdoor activities and social integration between neighbors.

The tower is a dominant for the complex and its surroundings. It marks also the main entrance to the complex, where public functions on the ground floor are placed,

My role: My role was to was to make some changes to the 3d model, model in 3d two proposals for the courtyard (ill.19 and ill.21), design and model the entrance plaza (ill.15), render out several visualizations and make all the changes that client asked for. The first proposal of the complex was entirely made of different kinds of bricks (ill.18, ill.19). Unfortunately there was not enough money to invest in the envelope materials so we were obliged to replace the bricks with a cheaper material: plaster with some small bricks parts (il.20). Due to the costs, the entrance plaza had to be removed. The other reason for that was the high level of noise coming from the main road that makes the place not pleasant to stay.

Architecture quality: Simple solutions in this project are directly related to economic issues. This might be a bad example expressing the notion of simplicity, since there is a danger of making the building simplistic and of a poor quality. The architect’s ideals were in this project partly upheld by the municipality so fortunately the client’s financially driven decisions had to be met with municipality approval. Nonetheless, the economic issues could cause a lot of problems in client-architect dialogue and affect the quality of architecture. Since the architecture is real, it must face reality and economic issues. Therefore it is important to know how to deal with the situation without harming architectural expression.

The resident’s kolonihaverne are placed in between the parking lots and opens up towards three different types of green spaces. The diversity of plants encourage the inhabitants and passers-by to discover the site.

Skipper Clement International School Short description: Masterplan + 6000m2 new school for international students // invited Owner: Skipper Clement International School Budget: unknown Function: Educational Location: Ny KĂŚrvej, Aalborg Project phase: Sketching, fundraising Skipper Clement International School is a historic bilingual (Danish, English) school lying in the heart of Aalborg. It consists of a collection of old buildings constructed at different times and it will be enlarged by 5 villas in between school and the railway.

Skipper Clement School requires some changes: - there is a need for greater surface since the student number has increased, - the classrooms are too small and don’t fit the modern way of teaching, - one sports hall is not enough now, - there is a need for common, integration spaces for students. The main concept for the school is an Inside Street on which all functions are located. The street joins all the separate buildings that are now badly connected. This could be considered as a functional improvement but it could also strengthen the community feeling and become a gathering place for students. The main Street varies in width, provides new learning opportunities, enables the creativity and can be seen as a resource in daily lessons.

My role: My tasks in this project were to remodel the parts of the buildings, model the surroundings and prepare 4 renders and one front elevation for presentation folder. Architecture quality: In this project the clarity is mainly manifested in the concept of the inside street that joins all functions. Since the project is partly a revitalization of old buildings that were not well connected, it was important to improve the way people are using the building. Thanks to the clear connection between different parts of the school, student and teachers will easily commute within the building as well as find interesting and inspiring places to learn and teach. In that way the quality of architecture could have an influence on the creativity and the feeling of community. In other words the clear architectural principles could actively support education.

Lille Vildmose Short description: Landscape project // Competition Owner: Lille Vildmose Centeret/ Aalborg Kommune Budget: 3.6 mio DKK Function: Recreation/ Culture Location: Lille Vildmose Project phase: Competition ill. 29 // One of the first sketches Lille Vildmose lies in an open land surrounded by danish ‘mose’ landscape and is protected by huge old trees. The site for the project is located on the opposite side of the Centeret and is supposed to be the place to gain knowledge and especially: experience the nature. The existing Vildmose Centeret was previously designed and realized by C.F Møller. Now, Centeret is the first place to visit on the site and plays a role of a gate of wisdom, where visitors can learn about the surrounding landscape before going on the site. Regarding the wealth and power of nature at Lille Vildmose, it was important from the beginning that the design interventions relate to the surroundings and integrate as much as possible with the nature. Except for that, the project aims to teach how to learn, understand, appreciate and take care of the nature. Klatreskoven

Vildmarken represents the project site where various fauna and flora from the whole Lille Vildmose is concentrated (ill.32). In Vildmarken the way you can discover the nature is not only horizontal but also vertical (ill.31). The axis gives the visitor an opportunity to experience the nature in 1: 1 and leads him through the area by offering different experiences on the road, such as various platforms and pavilions. Thanks to those interventions the visitors can admire nature from different points of view. It is also possible to choose a wilder grass path through the nature. It is the visitor’s choice whether he wants to go on a guided, informative journey on the axis or on a sensual and experimental discovery trip. Lille Vildmose project tries to shorten the distance between human and nature by creating different levels of experiences on the way, concentrating fauna and flora and giving information about the place. The projects aim is also to integrate with nature as much as possible.

The project propose a variety of different material experiences introduced on the site, such as wooden boardwalks, platforms and towers, metal grids, different kinds of textiles for ‘spiders webs’, hammocks or tents or simple cut grass paths. ill. 39 // Inspiration photos

My role: Unfortunately, the budget for the project was very low and the proposed solutions were quite expensive. Therefore, it was necessary to develop idea as a strategy for the future. Due to the fact that together with a low budget comes a low price for the competition, leader architects had to concentrate on other important duties and as a result I got a lot of responsibilities for the Lille Vildmose competition. I was entirely involved in the project development. I proposed a lot of design and graphic solutions that were later on approved by the project leaders. My role was to participate in the idea development, prepare all graphical material presented for the competition including: sketches, diagrams, plans, sections, final illustrations and arrange final A0 posters (Annex 01). I tried to actively participate in the meetings with project leaders and landscape architect from Aarhus. It was the first project at C.F. Møller that I could be a part of from the beginning to the end and I really appreciate the experience of having a lot of responsibilities for the company project.

Architecture quality: The notions of simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness in this project are reflected both in the concept itself as well as in the way the idea was presented. The term unpretentiousness is one of the C.F.Møller ideals not described so much in previous projects but very present in Lille Vildmose. Since the nature was such a big part of the project, the architectural interventions shouldn’t impose on the surroundings and therefore the main idea should be expressed in an unpretentious way. The aim of the architecture in this project was to emphasize the nature and help people to experience the natural landscape in the most intuitive and harmless for nature way. Therefore, txxxxxhe mission of architecture in Lille Vildmose competition was not to be in the spotlight but be an unpretentious and simple tool to discover the complexity of nature. The quality of this kind of expression plays a major educational role and thanks to simple rules clears up understatements.

Architecture quality: The clarity of the presentation material plays a crucial role in the competition context. The quality and the clarity of presented material have a big influence on how the project is perceived. For competition projects there is usually not much time to present the whole work. We had 20 minutes of presentation and 20 minutes of questions. Sometimes it is not enough to show all important aspects of the project. Therefore, the clear solutions and presentation methods that enable faster understanding can noticeably benefit the project, especially the competition project.

DLG Tårnet Short description: Transformation of the existing silo tower and new buildings Owner: A. Enggaard Budget: ca 120 mio DKK Function: Housing - youth and family apartments Location: Østre Havn; Aalborg Project phase: Main project phase The project is a reconstruction of the DLG silo at the Eastern side of Aalborg’s Harbor that converts the industrial surroundings into a new attractive neighborhood. The goal of the Eastern Harbor’s transformation is to create an urban district that consists of industrial heritage, contemporary architecture of high quality and an active urban life. The new housing will be a reconstruction of the characteristic DLG silo. Silo drying tower, which faces the harbor, is rebuilt in the tower’s original geometry but represents a modern expression. The composition of different types of housing and ownership (youth housing, rental housing and private apartments and lofts) will hopefully form the framework for a socially diverse neighborhood. At the same time the residents’ different use of the building could generate an interesting urban environment.

My role: My responsibility in this project was to redraw and furnish the plans as well as prepare the presentation of apartments in InDesign. The investor wants to start selling the apartments and therefore he needs the sales material for each apartment. The plans were supposed to be drawn and presented in a clear and understandable for non-architects way. Later on I was supposed to model the apartments in 3d and render out interior views.

Architecture quality: The simplicity of produced drawings in this case is to avoid misunderstandings between the investor and potential buyers. In this way the clear drawing is a very practical tool to sell the information about the product. Thanks to the clarity, the simplified technical drawing can be easily understandable for people not related to architecture field. The apartments plans have a clear layout to utilize the space and daylight as much as possible. There is a possiblity to change the function of certain rooms only by removing or moving a wall, what makes the apartments user friendly.

The aim of the project was to create an apartment building that ensures a good modern quality of living and at the same relates to the historical context. The complex consists of 62 apartments including 2-3 room apartments and the penthouses and is partly a renovation of the two existing buildings situated on Sankelmarksgade in Aalborg. The project presents a strong concept of a continuous pitched roof that joins all parts of the complex and repeats the shape of the surrounding roof typology. This double height pitched roof contain 6 attractive penthouses.

My role: My tasks in this project were to prepare a 3d model from scratch on the basis of preliminary plans of the building. I also had to model the two main existing buildings situated at an intersection of Boulevarden and Sankelmarksgade. The existing buildings had to be modeled and rendered for the meeting with the city architects. The actual local plan was based on the earlier Henning Larsen’s proposal of a flat roof building and it was not suitable for the C.F.Møller’s project which proposes the pitched roof building. It was therefore necessary to discuss this matter with the city architects. Other responsibilities for this project were to change the apartment’s plans, draw the penthouse plans, calculate surfaces, draw and render elevations, render out 3 views and prepare the presentation folder for the meeting with COWI engineers and Himmerland real estate agents.

Architecture quality: The notion of unpretentiousness in this project is shown in the way how the building relates to the surroundings. The fact of keeping the old facades and the use of an appropriate material (in this case bricks) on the new facades show the respect towards the historic context of the city center of Aalborg. Besides the use of an appropriate material the building relates to its neighbors in shape of the roof with dormer windows. The proposal represents a modern interpretation of the old buildings shape that in an unpretentious way integrates with the context.

Preserving the existing facades respects historic context and support the notion of unpretentiousness. Unfortunately at the same time it creates problems in terms of the clarity of the floorplans. Due to the different heights of the windows it was necessary to adjust the floor levels according to the existing facades. This resulted in different level heights of the altangang and thus it was necessary to add an extra elevator, what made the final floorplans more difficult and less clear. ill. 73 // East elevation

In 2017 Aalborg Kommune is supposed to take in 700 refugees. The flygtning bolig project’s aim is to create the refugees housing on 7 different sites close to Aalborg.

The refugee’s apartments should be very functional, compact, cheap and flexible. Some refugees are coming alone, but some of them bring their families. Therefore, the apartment layouts should be easily adjustable for different types of users. The project proposes 3 different types of modules that could be stuck on each other and joined in many different ways in order to create various apartment types.

Each apartment unit will have a separate storage room situated in the center of the complex together with other common outdoor activities.

All the sites are very different; some of them are very large. For the very big ones, apart from the refugees housing, the project provides single family row houses (ill. and ill.). This was mainly to avoid social exclusion of the very large refugee’s ghettos. Smaller complexes, with nice outdoor spaces and connection to the surroundings would hopefully enable a better integration.

My role: My role in this project was to prepare seven 3d models for each site, finish the 2d masterplans and present the sites on the diagrams. I also participated in the meeting with Himmerland real estate agents. The aim of the meeting was to present the general idea of the design and to show how many housing units fit each site.

Architecture quality: In this project the simplicity is reflected in the logical and flexible floorplans. There is no place for unnecessary space. The simple and compact apartments ensure the basics needs and at the same time thanks to the use of repetitive modules are easy and cheap to construct.

My role: My tasks were to model the project in 3d, change plans, prepare 2 masterplans and diagrams, render out 2 views and create the presentation folder. Architecture quality: In this small project the notions of simplicity and unpretentious are particular. Comparing to the previous projects, the Aalborg Arkitektur Festival project is in fact the opposite of unpretentiousness and modest. In return it presents a very vivid and flashy festival spirit. The festival is temporary and it will last only for less than two weeks (27.04-07.05.2017). Therefore the strong and flashy design will not have a long-term effect on the surroundings and instead it could serve as a good orientation point. The simplicity is reflected in this project in the construction system and the use of the same element: red container in different sizes.

In some places the containers are stuck on each other and create good orientation points for the festival. The use of the ship containers refers to the harbor typology and creates a modern, vivid and attractive event space.

04 Reflection Architecture quality - linking theory & practice C.F.Møller describes the quality of their architecture using the words: simple, clear and unpretentious. My aim of this semester’s internship was to investigate the matter of the architectural quality on the C.F.Møller’s examples and answer the question: In what way the C.F.Møller’s ideals of simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness can be used to describe and create the architecture quality? My first thought was to try to investigate that matter among my colleagues. When I asked some of them how do they feel about the company’s ideals, surprisingly the majority quickly answered that the presented ideals are just nice big words. They explained that obviously they were always trying to achieve the best results, but in most of the cases the final outcome depended on so many factors, that those big ideals were sometimes neglected. To some extend it is sadly true, that the clarity of the initial concept and ideas get partly lost in compromises with clients, engineers and the reality. Referring back to the introduction and quoting architecture classics Mies van der Rohe ”Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together. There it begins.” [7] or Peter Zumthor ”Music needs to be performed. Architecture needs to be executed” [6] I believe that architecture must be real and therefore should face the reality and its problems. Despite the pessimistic attitude of the team, from what I could experience at the office, the company’s ideals are still very present in C.F.Møller’s work and that is also what I want to show in this report. What I have noticed and appreciated while working with architects was the way they think about the users. While designing the Teaterkvarteret or DLG Tarnet apartments or creating common spaces for Digtervejen or Skipper Clement, the project team was constantly asking the question how the users would behave or what they would need. This attitude led to very clear and simple solutions for instance in the apartment layouts and I can imagine this would have a big influence on quality of future user’s lives. Simplicity and clarity should also be understood in the tectonic way. Avoiding unnecessary elements of the structure and optimizing it lead to clear beautiful and economic result. Furthermore the quality of architecture and hence the use of proper and durable materials make the structure last longer and enable an economic and environment friendly approach. Unfortunately I have not worked together with the engineers at the office and I do not have any precise examples of an effective collaboration. Nevertheless, having my engineer background from Warsaw University of Technology and Aalborg University I believe that being aware of the technical issues enable architects to better understand the architecture quality. In the Thinking Architecture book Peter Zumthor wrote: ”Buildings are artificial constructions. They consist of single parts which must be joined together. To a large degree the quality of the finished object is determined by the quality of the joints.” [6]. According to his words, I believe that paying attention to details in both engineering and architecture strongly influence the quality of the final result. As shown on examples, simplicity or clarity usually express the advantage and that’s how architects consider those terms but sometimes the term simple can be transformed into simplistic and therefore can become a danger for the overall architectural quality. That was the case in Digtervejen apartment project. The client finally didn’t have money to invest in the materials and we were obliged to simplify it in a rather simplistic way. Next to the simplicity and clarity ideals, there is the last one: unpretentiousness. During my internship at C.F.Møller I discovered this notion especially in the way the design related to the surroundings. It was especially clear in Teaterkvarteret where the design of the proposal was heavily dependent on the existing buidings. That was also the case in the Lille Vildmose competition. The main objective of architectural structures introduced in the landscape was to highlight the qualities of nature and help visitors to discover it.

Referring back to my internship’s question, the ideals of simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness could very well describe and create the architecture quality but only if they are intentionally used and followed in the whole design process. I believe that it is important to have a framework of what we consider the architecture quality. It is sometimes hard to put big ideals into words, but by doing so it might be easier to make the link between the theory and practice, keep track of the architectural quality during the design process and finally create the valuable result.

Architecture quality - personal reflection As presented on examples, in each and every C.F.Møller’s project I was trying to focus on my internship theme of the architectural quality. The reason for choosing this topic was very personal. As a future graduate my internship’s aim was also to find my own way of understanding the very broad architectural quality theme. During the 5 months at the office I was always eager to witness how architects deal with challenges encountered in their everyday work and how they fight for their ideals. When I think about creating the architectural work I always think of the great responsibility that architects have for the quality of architecture they are creating. Even while doing my semester projects, especially the individual ones at my home University in Warsaw or during my stay in Paris, I always was slightly insecure about whether the work I created is good enough to be proud of. I was incredibly hard for me to judge if the quality of the proposal meets all social, esthetic and technical requirements and at the same time expresses myself as an architectural student. And as my practical architectural experience has shown, it is also the case in the real life. Since the architectural quality is so difficult to measure and depends on so many factors, it can be sometimes very frustrating to try to achieve the perfect result. I imagine that at the same time the awareness of the great responsibility of the projects make architects very careful in their design. Therefore I strongly believe that the theme of the quality of the architecture work should be a big part of the design. The quality of the design itself the quality of the construction have a lot in common in my opinion and since I have noticed the strong link and common objectives between those professions, in my future development I will try to take advantage of both in order to create the final result of a better quality. The architecture understood in terms of the realized buildings has a tremendous impact on the surrounding environment, nature and us, people. It creates the identity of the place, influence people’s behavior and wellbeing. And in a way, without us even noticing, architecture is a huge part of reality that influence directly our lives. In those terms, since architecture is so close to humans, the quality of building environment would be reflected in the quality of our living. This is why I would personally feel extremely responsible of what my future project team is creating and how the design influence the surroundings. All these thoughts led me to choose the architectural quality topic as my internship theme.

Working environment quality When talking about the architectural quality I shouldn’t forget the working quality itself. Working quality for me is the way how team members are able to efficiently work together but also if they feel comfortable and if they are eager to help each other. I personally don’t appreciate the stressful environment with a high rivalry between group members. I believe that this can only be to the detriment of the overall working output and thus directly influence the architectural quality. Therefore, apart from the everyday social integration, I was also very fond the monthly meetings idea. One-hour meetings were organized in order to keep all the company members up to date. These meetings have shown how important and interesting is to follow what other group members are doing. It was also a great possibility to learn what are the responsibilities of others and where to find help.

General internship output The internship at C.F.Møller was a great possibility to both get a professional insight into the architect’s work and integrate socially in the Danish environment. During my stay at the office I could be a part of various design process including competition project development (Lille Vildmose), existing building renovation and extension (Skipper Clement School), new construction (mainly housing: Digtervejen, DLG Tårnet, Teater kvarteret) or a particular topics such as a of refugees villages (Flytning bolig) or pavilions for Aalborg Arkitektur Festival. I participated in the design, I was preparing the material including all kinds of drawings but also I participated in the meetings with clients, investors, real estate agents, engineers and landscape architects. All the meeting were held in Danish, which was also a big challenge for me as an international intern. I was unfortunately not able to understand all details or a specific professional vocabulary but nevertheless most of the conversations were clear and enriching my leaning goals. Moreover, what is very important, thanks to those meetings I could also get an insight into the matters that are not fully assured by the educational program and learn what are the main challenges in the professional world and how to effectively communicate with others professions. I have especially appreciated the amount of responsibility I got at the office. Comparing to my previous experiences in architecture offices in France or in Poland, at C.F.Møller the work was much more individual and I could carry out a lot of tasks independently. I never felt as the lowest and less qualified member of the team, quite the reverse. In fact I was very often asked for opinion or advice what suddenly made me a valuable member of the project team. This approach also helped me to better integrate in the Danish company environment. Even though I am an European citizen and I know the general European environment, I find the Danish working reality very different from my previous experiences. As the only international team member it was at first very hard to understand the relations between the team members and find my place in the social structure. Nevertheless, I was impressed how well this flat hierarchy structure involving the high level of directness but also equality and respect could work. Besides helping the team with the project development, my personal aim of the internship was, as described above, to investigate the quality of architecture by referring to C.F.Møller’s ideals of simplicity, clarity and unpretentiousness. Trying to investigate this topic in real architectural life during my internship was a great and extensive experience in my architectural education. In fact, I have never had an opportunity to analyze this topic theoretically and at the same time being able to compare it with the reality. I definitely learned a lot out of this experience but I also feel that the matter of architectural quality need a lot more attention and time. Therefore I consider it as a good starting point for my future investigation of the architectural quality. This semester’s internship output, together with my own previous experiences, gave me a clear picture of the industry, clarified my approach to the matter of architectural quality and also helped to discover the specific attitude at C.F. Møller architecture studio.
