ffering small-batch, handmade, artisan products sourced primarily in the U.S. sets Fay and Maye apart from other Salida retail shops. Not to mention their cozy, muted tones—black, white and neutral palettes shine at 130 F Street. Mother-daughter co-owners, Rosella Lusk and Ysabella Rankin named the shop after Ysabella’s grandparents, farmers from Maryville, MO. When

the shop moved to Salida from Buena Vista in 2017, Ysabella remembers being greeted warmly by other local business owners. “They were welcoming in a lot of ways.” At Fay and Maye you’ll find simple, clean ceramics and home goods—M.Bueno Pottery from Olympia, WA is a regular feature at the shop. PEDAL THE SINGLE TRACK

Load up your bike—or rent one from Subculture Cyclery or Absolute Bikes— and head to one of the dozens of area trails built specifically with mountain bikers in mind. Local favorites include the Salida Mountain Trail System— including beginner level Methodist Mountain Trails—Columbine Trail to Rainbow, and Monarch Crest high on the Continental Divide. Salida Bike Company is another terrific resource for trail conditions, rides and repairs.

TAKE FIDO TO THE PARK

Visit Loyal Duke Dog park, Salida’s only dog park, near the Milk Run Trail on Holman Avenue. Let your dog run, while socializing with other dog lovers in the open air. Open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

WATCH THE BIRDS

Grab a pair of binoculars and a cup o’ joe and head out at sunrise for some bird watching. Franz Lake on CR 160 or Sands Lake on CR 175 are locally known spots to see pelicans, geese and ducks—as well as the occasional nesting osprey. Trails line the shore at both lakes and a dock for fishing or viewing wildlife extends into the water at Sands.

RELAX BY THE RIVER

Sometimes you’ve gotta keep it simple. The sandy shore along the Arkansas River is an idyllic environment for lounging with a book, picnicking with family or sitting in silent mediation. Large boulders added along the walking path near the Salida River Park are also sweet spots for a little yoga session.

This prompted the founders of the organization, Jill and Trevor Davis to create an organization that would: offer quality artistic experiences to under-served groups; help experienced artists develop high standard educational curricula that teach the deeper meanings of their discipline; provide and/ or seek employment for artists who have educational programs; and act as a central hub for collaboration between artists and local institutions.

Family and Youth Initiatives (FYI) has a vision for it’s Chaffee County residents: to make sure they are the safest, healthiest and most self-sufficient in Colorado. They provide support to over 1000 local youths and families a year. Their programs include one on one mentoring between adults and youth, parenting and family classes, and educational programs to divert youth from high risk behaviors. Their mission is to provide proven, effective, prevention programs to promote healthy behaviors in our local youth and families to build a strong community.
