Piergiorgio Bucci campione italiano 2020. Festeggiatissima vittoria quella del cavaliere aquilano quarantacinque anni, che, portando al successo l’elegante grigio di nove anni Casago, ha inserito la sua firma nell’albo d’oro del Tricolore per la seconda volta. La prima medaglia d’oro l’aveva infatti ottenuta nel 2008 in sella a Varetino. “La soddisfazione è davvero grande – ha dichiarato – perché questo cavallo ha dei numeri davvero non comuni. È un Holsteiner nato in Olanda. Io l’ho scelto quando aveva tre anni nel suo allevamento ma il proprietario non ha voluto venderlo. Lo ha fatto due anni più tardi e non me lo sono lasciato scappare. È un vero fuoriclasse. Il Campionato è stato per lui la prima gara dove ho dovuto sottoporlo ad un po’ di pressione perché, pur avendo nove anni, ho cercato di risparmiarlo molto per favorire al massimo la sua maturazione. Mi rende tranquillo pensare di avere un cavallo di così grande qualità in scuderia. Nella sua genealogia vanta una madre molto qualitativa ed è per questo che ha iniziato ad essere impiegato anche nella riproduzione molto giovane. Ha già moltissimi figli in giro e solamente io ne ho già tre in scuderia”.

Bucci ormai da molti anni vive all’estero ed è un punto cardine della squadra italiana di salto ostacoli (medaglia d’argento ai campionati d’Europa 2009).“È stata una scelta obbligata. Non si vive di soli concorsi e per mantenersi all’altezza del circuito internazionale di massimo livello affiancare un’attività di commercio è assolutamente indispensabile. Belgio, Olanda e Germania sono il cuore pulsante dell’allevamento e del mercato internazionale di qualità: in un ideale cerchio di cinquecento chilometri di raggio c’è quanto di meglio il mondo del cavallo da sella può offrire. Purtroppo in Italia, anche considerando la situazione generale, la figura dei proprietario è in via di estinzione. In Olanda ho iniziato a fare una società con un amico: mi sono trasferito lì nel 2010, in un posto che ho conosciuto durante una visita di compravendita. Ora vivo sempre in Olanda ma ho la scuderia in Belgio, a Hamont, appena superato il confine. Lavoro molto con i cavalli giovani. Ne ho una trentina e molti sono in centri di allevamento. Nella mia scuderia posso ospitarne dodici e attualmente quatto o cinque posti sono destinati ai cavalli da Gran Premio. Il mio parco cavalli per le gare importanti è al momento molto interessante”.

Una bella storia iniziata con sella americana e cappello da cow boy...

Piergiorgio Bucci is the winner of the 2020 Italian Show Jumping Championship. The 45-year-old rider from L’Aquila was a very popular winner, who, riding his elegant 9-year-old grey Casago, added his name to the championship’s Roll of Honour for the second time. He had won his first gold medal in 2008 riding Varetino. “This is really immensely satisfying,” he said, “because this horse is really very special. He is a Holsteiner born in Holland and I chose him when he still a 3-year-old at a stud farm, but his owner wasn’t’ willing to sell him. He did put him up for sale a year later and I made sure I didn’t miss this chance to buy him. He really is a star.

For him this Championship proved to be the first time I was obliged to put him under a little pressure because, although he is now nine, I have tried to take things slowly with him to allow him to mature as much as possible. It makes me feel confident to have a horse of such quality in my stables. His breeding includes an excellent dam and that is why he also started to stand at stud when he was still very young and has produced many offspring of which I already have three in my stables.”

Bucci has been living abroad for many years and is one of the Italian team’s key riders (team silver medal at the 2009 European Championships). “Living abroad was a choice I had to make. Once cannot live only off show jumping and so as to be able to remain at the top level of the international circuit it is absolutely indispensable

to also have a business buying and selling horses. Belgium, Holland and Germany are the beating heart of the breeding world and the top-quality international market. Within an imaginary circle of five hundred kilometres there is the best the world of competitive sports horses has to offer.

Taking into account the current situation in general, in Italy owners of important competitive sports horses are sadly becoming extinct. In Holland I started off by forming a company with a friend and the moved there permanently in 2010, to a place I had seen when going to buy a horse. Now I live in Holland permanently but have stables in Belgium, in Hamont, just across the border. I work a lot with young horses. I own about thirty and many of them are at stud farms. I have room for twelve in my yard and there are currently four or five places reserved to Grand Prix horses. I have a really interesting team of horses now for top competitions.”

Born in L’Aquila, where his father was working as the director of construction being done on the Gran Sasso tunnel, as a boy Piergiorgio Bucci chose a life that was certainly not fully approved of by his family. It did not prove to be easy for him to become a success in the world of show jumping. “I started together with my brother and we used to go to a tiny riding school just outside the city where Western riding was taught. Basically, we only went hacking and nothing else. It was, however, enough to make me understand that that was to be my life. Then I was lucky enough to meet the right people.

Elio Balestrazzi , the owner and instructor of a riding school was my first reference point. So as to encourage me to learn he even went without his own horses, allowing me to ride them at my first shows. Francesco De Finis, an enthusiastic Neapolitan rider who for many years was also president of the Campania Region’s Equestrian Sports Regional Committee, gave me my first ride on a top horse. But the moment I consider life changing in my career as a rider came when I met the Belgian rider Jean Claude Noel who lived in Narni, in Umbria and immediately after that I met Duccio Bartalucci.” What a wonderful story, in which everything started with an American saddle and a cowboy’s hat ...

Nato a L’Aquila dove suo padre era impegnato come direttore dei lavori del traforo del Gran Sasso, Piergiorgio Bucci ha affrontato da ragazzo una scelta di vita che in famiglia non era certamente condivisa. Non è stato facile per lui sfondare nel mondo dello salto ostacoli. “Abbiamo iniziato insieme mio fratello ed io frequentando un minuscolo maneggio alle porte della città dove si faceva monta americana. Qualche passeggiata e niente di più. Quel tanto però che mi è bastato per farmi capire che quella doveva essere la mia strada. Poi ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare le persone giuste.

Elio Balestrazzi, il proprietario e istruttore del maneggio è stato il mio primo punto di riferimento: per favorire la mia formazione si è addirittura privato dei suoi cavalli che mi ha messo a disposizione per i primi concorsi. Francesco De Finis, un appassionato cavaliere napoletano che per molti anni è stato anche Presidente del Comitato Regionale FISE della Campania, mi ha dato il primo buon cavallo. Il momento però che considero la svolta della mia vita di cavaliere è stato l’incontro con il cavaliere belga Jean Claude Noel che viveva a Narni, in Umbria e subito dopo Duccio Bartalucci.” Una bella storia iniziata con sella americana e cappello da cow boy...

Piergiorgio da piccolo è attirato dai cavalli e quindi inizia a montare come i cowboy: i bambini che non nascono in una famiglia già coinvolta nel mondo dell’equitazione, infatti, vedono solo i cavalli dei cowboy e degli indiani. Sella americana, cappello da cowboyr, cinturone… Poi il destino lo guida verso l’approdo della sua vita: impara a saltare da solo e il suo talento viene notato dal proprietario del centro ippico L’Aquila Aterno, Elio Balestrazzi. Piergiorgio è poi diventato quello che si potrebbe definire un bell’esempio per tutti: ovviamente grande talento, ma anche autocritica, giusto distacco dalle cose positive e da quelle negative, capacità di imparare dagli errori, determinazione, tanto lavoro. Un cavaliere che ha regalato tantissimo all’Italia, anche da quando nel 2010 – anno in cui si è messo al collo la medaglia d’argento a squadre del campionato d’Europa – si è trasferito in Olanda per avviare una propria scuderia sportiva e di commercio, avventura condivisa con la moglie Janika Sprunger, amazzone svizzera cha ha partecipato anche ai giochi olimpici di Rio 2016.

As a little boy Piergiorgio was already attracted by horses and so he started off riding like a cowboy. Children who don’t grow up in horsey families often only see the horses ridden by cowboys and Indians. An American saddle, a cowboy’s hat, a holster… But then destiny guided him in the right direction… He taught himself to jump and his talent was noticed by Elio Balestrazzi, the owner of an equestrian school called L’Aquila Aterno. Piergiorgio then became what one could describe as a good example for everyone. He is obviously very talented, but there is also his self-criticism, a reasonable detachment from all that is positive and negative, an ability to learn from his mistakes, determination and a lot of hard work. He is a rider who has contributed a great deal to the Italian Team also since winning the team silver medal at the European Championships in 2010 and moving to Holland to open his own stables, an adventure he shares with his wife Janika Sprunger, the Swiss rider who also rode in to 2016 Rio Olympics.
