Steve Guerdat ha guadagnato il titolo di campione olimpico a Londra nel 2012 in sella a Nino de Buissonnets. È stata la prima medaglia d’oro individuale in 88 anni per la Svizzera, guadagnata con stile e perfezione dall’unico binomio capace di ottenere il record di tre percorsi netti nella finale a due percorsi. Sotto gli occhi del mondo e con una pressione altissima, ogni falcata contata è stata di impeccabile esecuzione. Durante il periodo di duraturo successo, Guerdat è diventato uno dei soli cinque cavalieri che hanno vinto il Rolex Grand Prix a Ginevra tre volte (2006, 2013 e 2015) mentre nel 2019 ha anche vinto il titolo della FEI Jumping World Cup.

La sua lista di successi si apre sui più prestigiosi appuntamenti del salto ostacoli nel mondo. Raggiunto da Martin Fuchs, il giovane cavaliere svizzero che nel gennaio 2020 per un breve periodo gli è succeduto nel ruolo di Numero Uno al mondo, Guerdat ha presto ripreso il testimone dal suo connazionale. “Conosco Steve da tanto tempo, da quando i nostri genitori gareggiavano insieme – dice Fuchs – 27 anni, anche lui testimonial Rolex che nel 2019 ha guadagnato l’argento alle spalle di Guerdat nella finale della FEI World Cup prima di chiudere la stagione con la sua prima vittoria nel Grand Prix Rolex di Ginevra. In quella occasione Fuchs ha superato Guerdat e il britannico Scott Brash, un altro membro della famiglia equestre Rolex.

“Steve è dieci anni più grande di me. Lui è sempre stato il mio idolo e non è mai cambiato – aggiunge Fuchs che è anche campione d’Europa in carica. “Normalmente lo seguo quando monta e facciamo la ricognizione del percorso insieme. Da quando lui ha chiesto a mio padre di seguirlo siamo diventati molto uniti. È incredibile vedere come Steve addestra tutti i suoi cavalli. È stato nella top ten per talmente tanti anni vincen-

Steve Guerdat is an Olympic champion, clinching individual gold at the London 2012 Games, riding Nino de Buissonnets. It was Switzerland’s first show jumping gold medal in 88 years, achieved with style and perfection by Guerdat and Nino, the only rider and horse combination to record fault-free rides in the final two rounds. With the world watching, under the most intense pressure, and when every stride counted, their execution was flawless.

During a period of sustained success, Guerdat has become one of only five riders to win the Rolex Grand Prix at CHI Geneva three times (2006, 2013 and 2015) while in 2019 he also won his third FEI Jumping World Cup™ Final title in 2019. His list of honours extends across the world’s most prestigious show jumping events.

Take it from Martin Fuchs, the Swiss show jumper who in January 2020 briefly succeeded Guerdat as World No. 1 before his countryman regained the mantle.

Martin ed io trascorriamo tanto tempo insieme.

“Steve is 10 years older than me. He has always been my role model and this has never changed,” adds Fuchs, who is also the reigning FEI European champion. “I used to watch him ride and I would walk the courses with him. Then he asked my dad to train him and since then we have become really close.

“To see how Steve trains and to see how he manages all of his horses is incredible. He has been in the top 10 for so many years, winning with so many different horses and this is so inspiring for me.”

Fuchs could ride before he could run. His grandfather was a farmer who branched out into horses and built a riding school. Fuchs’ mother, father and uncle, Renata, Thomas and Markus, became international show jumpers, and both Thomas and Markus represented Switzerland at the Olympics.

The Fuchs family operation is based in idyllic countryside outside Zurich, in Switzerland’s north-east, and is just eight kilometres from where Guerdat has established his own home, stables and headquarters. Thomas Fuchs mentors Guerdat, Guerdat influences Martin Fuchs, and Fuchs provides the competition to help keep Guerdat sharp.

Suo nonno era un agricoltore che ha lavorato con i cavalli e creato una scuola di equitazione. La mamma, il fratello e lo zio - Renate, Thomas e Markus - sono stati cavalieri di classe internazionale e sia Markus che Thomas hanno rappresentato la Svizzera ai Giochi Olimpici.

Il quartier generale della famiglia Fuchs è in una campagna idilliaca fuori Zurigo, nel nord est della Svizzera, a soli otto chilometri da dove Guerdat ha stabilito la sua casa e scuderia, Thomas Fuchs è il mentore di Steve Guerdat. Guerdat influenza Martin Fuchs e Fuchs fa da antagonista per tenere Guerdat in forma perfetta.

“Martin ed io trascorriamo molto tempo insieme – dice Guerdat che è seguito da Fuchs senior dal 2007. Probabilmente ho passato più tempo con la famiglia Fuchs che con la mia negli ultimi anni. Stare tutto quel tempo con Martin e Thomas ha creato un rapporto molto forte, sia professionalmente che di amicizia.

Io e Martin abbiamo un modo molto simile di affrontare le cose e non abbiamo bisogno di dire molto. Sono importanti i piccoli dettagli e sapere che hai comunque qualcuno su cui contare. La nostra è un’amicizia molto forte e vera.” Ma Guerdat è pienamente consapevole che il suo più caro amico è anche il suo più temibile rivale.

“Lavoro sempre duro ed entro in ogni gara cercando di dare il meglio ma non credo che ci possa essere nulla di così stimolante che sapere di avere come avversario Martin” ammette Guerdat.

mo mi stimola ogni giorno di più a provare di fare meglio. Avere qualcuno come Martin avversario mi rende sicuro di non essere critico nei miei confronti. Vedo già molte cose che Martin fa meglio di me e questo mi motiva a migliorare”. “ Alle fine della giornata – commenta Fuchs, tu vuoi solo andare in campo e fare il meglio che puoi. Cerchi la vittoria e, certamente, non vuoi essere battuto da chiunque. Noi siamo sempre contenti l’uno dell’altro ed è fantastico avere Steve come Capitano della squadra svizzera. È bello pensare che possiamo supportare il nostro team e anche che siamo in grado di stimolarci a vicenda”. “Quando ero ragazzo ricordo che vedevo la presenza di Rolex nello sport attraverso Rodrigo Pessoa – spiega Guerdat. “Sin da quel momento pensavo come ad un sogno poter essere parte della famiglia Rolex. Mi rende davvero orgoglioso ora farne parte. Lo considero uno dei migliori risultati della mia carriera.”

Vedevo la presenza di Rolex nello sport attraverso Rodrigo Pessoa.

“Martin and I spend a lot of time together,” says Guerdat, who has been coached by Fuchs senior since 2007. “I have probably spent more time with the Fuchs family than my own in recent years. Spending so much time with Thomas and Martin has created a very strong relationship between us, both professionally and as friends. “Martin and I have a similar way of doing things, so we often don’t need to say a lot; it’s more the smaller details and knowing that you have someone who you can rely on. It is a very strong, real, true friendship.”

But Guerdat is also fully aware his close friend is also his nearest rival. “I always train hard and go into every competition trying my best, but I don’t think anything can push you as hard as having someone like Martin to compete with,” admits Guerdat. “Seeing him grow each day and winning so much already at such a young age, it pushes me every day to work even harder to try to get better. Having someone as good as Martin to compete with, it makes sure that I don’t get complacent. I see a lot of things already from Martin that he does much better than me, so it really motivates me to become a better rider.”

Reflects Fuchs: “At the end of the day, you just go into the ring and you want to do the best that you can, you want to win, obviously you don’t want to be beaten by anyone, but we are always happy for each other, and it’s great to have Steve as a teammate for Switzerland. To be able to support and help the Swiss team is great and we are able to spur each other on.”

“When I was younger, I always remember seeing Rolex’s involvement with the sport and Rodrigo Pessoa,” says Guerdat. “Since then, it has always been a dream for me to be a part of the Rolex family. It makes me so proud to be a Rolex Testimonee and there are very few days when I don’t think about it. It is one of my biggest achieve-
