FROM PAGE ONE: After 34 races in eight events across six countries, there was just one final round in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series. Land Rover BAR headed to Fukuoka, Japan with a huge amount at stake. The overall winner of the ACWS takes two points into the next stage of the

35th America’s Cup, the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers. That is the equivalent of two wins – a 20 per cent bonus on the remaining available points in the double round robin, beginning in Bermuda on 26 May. Before the finale got underway the team experienced Japanese sporting

culture with a visit to the local Sumo Stables. Sumo is the most traditional sport in Japan and is one of the oldest sports in the world, dating back to AD 794.

Once sailing got underway Land Rover BAR recorded a great opening day. Three podium places made them top scorer for the day. The team went into Sunday in a strong position, and a stunning final day performance saw them take the win and with it the title of 2015 - 2016 ACWS Champions ahead of defenders ORACLE TEAM USA and Emirates Team New Zealand. Consistency has been the key for Land Rover BAR. In nine events, the team have only been off the podium twice, recording four event wins (Portsmouth twice, Oman and Fukuoka), bolstered by a second (Chicago) and two third places (Gothenburg and Toulon). After the event Sir Ben said: “Twoand-a-half years ago we had absolutely nothing, so what we have achieved in building the team, the infrastructure and this performance in the World Series is something we should all be incredibly proud of - but at the same time it is just one step in our journey to the America’s Cup. “Our objective was to get the two bonus points and we have got that, and now the focus is clearly on the race boat and the performance next summer in Bermuda. “I am absolutely delighted by how things have gone, but at the same time I know our team and how focused they are on the America’s Cup. We will be straight into training in Bermuda and getting best prepared for the America’s Cup to try and bring it home after a 167 years of hurt.” LandRoverBAR.com /#BringTheCupHome

BaR pRepaRe FOR BOaT LaUNCH LAND Rover BAR is preparing to unveil Britain’s latest America’s Cup racing boat. The catamaran uses industry-first aerodynamic testing by Land Rover engineers to exploit and explore new areas of performance gains to make the boat faster through water and the air. Land Rover’s engineers have worked on the boat’s giant 77ft high wingsail using their understanding of aerodynamics and the computer technology used on developing cars. The team has created sophisticated software to explore the detailed and dynamic performance of the wingsail, analysing 80 million computational cells in each test, which will seek definitive results to help further performance gains. Tony Harper, director of research at

Jaguar Land Rover, said: “We have been working extremely closely with the design team at the base in Portsmouth and the America’s Cup race boat, known as R1, which will be ready to launch early next year. “The engineers are seeing their hard work pay off and as the Cup will be won on those vital few seconds, we anticipate seeing significant performance gains which we believe will ultimately help the team to win in Bermuda.” The America’s Cup race boat will be launched in early 2017 in Bermuda, the host of the 35th America’s Cup in May and June 2017. ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde WELCOME to the final issue of 2016. While it is interesting to reflect on the busy sailing year we have had, it is good to know that 2017 is already shaping up to be another great year for boaters and fans of all watersports. Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Not the one where you join a gym, go for a month and then have to pay for a year’s contract. A resolution has to be something that will keep your interest, and this month we take a look at a watersport that could be your new passion in 2017. Stand up paddle boarding is becoming increasingly popular but did you know it can get you fit, or that you can cruise, fish and even do yoga on a paddle board? Find out more on page 30. A long way from a paddle board, Alex Thomson’s resolution is to be the first Brit to win the Vendee Globe, and he got off to an amazing start when, nine days in, not only did Alex cross the Equator in first place but he beat the record held by Frenchman Jean Le Camby. For the very latest up-dates on Alex’s progress see the All at Sea website. Although the champagne is on hold for Alex, two people who have been celebrating are Olympians Saskia Clark and Hannah Mills. To finish off their incredible year, which included a Gold in Rio and two World Cup golds, they were named female Rolex World Sailors of the Year. Saskia and I went to the same school in Colchester, but I did not meet her as she joined the year after I left. Since her Olympic win, however, Saskia has been back in Essex to help

18

inspire future generations. Saskia is just one of many sailors working to ensure today’s youngsters will be leading the way at future Olympic Games and following in the footsteps of British Rolex World Sailors of the Year including Sarah Ayton, Sir Ben Ainslie and Dame Ellen MacArthur. We look forward to seeing young sailors coming up through the ranks and going on to achieve similar successes in the world of sailing. One man who has already achieved an incredible amount is Sir Ben Ainslie. And he is far from finished as the America’s Cup heads to Bermuda next spring. The final America’s Cup World Series event in Japan last month saw Land Rover BAR not only win the round but top the overall standings giving them a massive advantage going into Bermuda. It is going to be an incredibly exciting time when the teams meet again, and Britain will be fully behind the boys to #BringtheCupHome. I cannot imagine Sir Ben is short of sailing kit and gadgets, but if you are wondering what to buy that special sailor in your life turn to page 16 for our Christmas gift guide. There are also many great books available, and we have picked a selection on page 20. Whether you are spending the festive season on your boat, visiting friends and family or are staying home, All at Sea sends our best wishes for a wonderful holiday. We will see you in 2017 for the London Boat Show. editor@allatsea.co.uk

BRITS ON TOP OF THE WORLD AGAIN THE winners of the 2016 Rolex World Sailors of the Year were announced at an awards ceremony held in Barcelona. Olympic Champions Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark were named female Rolex World Sailors of the Year following on from the win, last year, for British Olympian Sarah Ayton. It is the perfect end to their partnership as Saskia bows out of Olympic competition. Spurred on by missing out on London 2012 gold in the 470 Class, Hannah and Saskia set about the Rio Games in determined fashion. They were near flawless in their build up. Gold at the 2015 Sailing World Cup Final, silver at the

2015 World Championships and two 2016 World Cup golds proved they were a force to be reckoned with. Saskia said: “It is totally overwhelming to win this award, to see the names of previous winners, the legends of sailing in the room with us. We really were not expecting this.” Hannah said: “The whole basis of our campaign was teamwork, our bond. To cap our year with winning this award is absolutely incredible.” Rio Finn gold medallist and four-time World Champion Giles Scott was again one of the five male nominees, but was pipped to the prize by 55-year-old

Santiago Lange, winner of the Nacra 17 gold in Rio. Argentinian Santiago provided Rio 2016 with the fairy tale storyline of the Olympic Games as he won gold with Cecilia Carranza Saroli. At 54-years-old, six-time Olympian and two-time bronze medal winner, Santiago was the oldest sailor competing, but his story goes beyond his age. Just one year prior to the Games Santiago was diagnosed with cancer and had a lung removed. He showed what is possible when passion is backed by courage and determination. www.britishsailingteam.com

ALEX SETS RECORDS TUMBLING ALEX Thomson is attempting to become the first British sailor ever to win the Vendée Globe. Alex departed from Les Sables d’Olonne, France, alongside 28 other sailors in early November. One of the most gruelling sporting challenges on the planet, the 26,000nm race is a single-handed, non-stop, unassisted race around the world. Often termed ‘the Everest of Sailing’, the race, which comes around every three years, pushes sailors to their very limits, requiring them to compete alone at sea for around three months, without stopping or setting foot on dry land. Alex said: “After four years, the day has finally arrived. The team has worked incredibly hard to get HUGO BOSS ready and I am confident that we now have a boat which is genuinely capable of winning the race. “I hope to be crossing the finish line on board HUGO

BOSS in first place. That would be an incredibly special moment not only for myself and my team, but for British sport as a whole.” Alex started the race in eleventh place, but during the first night the fleet of boats divided and he quickly moved into a podium position as he crossed the Bay of Biscay. A week later Alex made the decision to pass through the Canary Islands leaving Cape Verde to the west. This manoeuvre placed him almost 100 miles ahead of the leaders, allowing him to take pole position. After nine days, seven hours and three minutes at sea he crossed the Equator in first place and in the fastest time ever in the Vendee Globe. This beat the previous record held by French Skipper Jean Le Camby by more than a day.

Alex went on to break another Vendee record travelling 535.34nm in 24 hours. Francois Gabart set the record of 534.48nm in the 2012 Vendee Globe and Alex sailed an additional 1,573m. However, the official rule of the world speed sailing record states that the record must be exceeded by one complete nautical mile (1,852m) further than the previous record in order to be ratified. The records continued to tumble as Alex smashed two more in a single day. Not only did he reach the Cape of Good Hope in a record 17d 22hrs 58mins but he raced from the Equator to the Cape of Good Hope in the fastest time ever seen in the Vendée Globe. Despite breaking off part of his starboard foil after hitting an unidentified object Thomson retains the lead. Keep up-to-date with at www.alexthomsonracing.com

DATE SET FOR RACE AROUND BRITAIN & IRELAND THE Royal Western Yacht Club has announced details of the Round Britain and Ireland race. The two-handed race will start from Plymouth on 3 June 2018. This will be the 14th running of the four yearly yacht race, which was established in 1966 by the Cockershell hero Major Blondie Hasler. The race comprises five legs totalling around 2,000 miles. The course is sailed clockwise around the British Isles and Ireland leaving all islands and rocks to starboard. The race is open to professional and amateur yachtsmen in mono and multi-hulls from 28ft up to 50ft length overall. The Round Britain and Ireland race is essentially five races in one with the results decided on accumulated time (IRC corrected). The legs are relatively short stages of three or four days where time spent at the helm and minimum sleep has to be balanced with the need for solo watch keeping and precise navigation. The race record stands at 15 days seven hours, but sailors should allow about 23 days to complete the event, including four 48 hour stopovers in Kinsale, Castle Bay, Lerwick and Lowestoft. The finish line is in Plymouth Sound off the RWYC Club House. The Notice of Race and Entry Form can be found at the RWYC website. rwyc.org

COWES SUPPORTS YOUNG SAILORS THE organisers of Cowes Week are continuing their youth initiative which offers discounted entry fees to boats with crews of under 25-year-olds. The Cowes Week Under 25 Youth initiative is designed to inspire and make it possible for young people to race at the regatta. By offering an attractive package to young sailors, numbers have, not surprisingly, increased over the last few years. Entries at this year’s regatta for the Under 25 Trophy increased by 12 per cent. Cowes Week Ltd is offering the first 25 crews to enter, who are all under 25

at the time of the regatta, a 50 per cent discount on the entry fee. Kate Johnson, Commercial & Marketing Director at Cowes Week Ltd, said: “We are committed to making racing at Cowes Week more attractive and cost-effective for the nextgeneration of sailors, and are delighted by the increase in youth entries over the past few years.” Competition in the MUSTO Under 25 Trophy could not have been more intense in 2016. Jack Davies and his team on the J/70 Yeti were back to reclaim their title from 2014 from Hugo Sloper and his team.

The BBC was concerned about preserving the environment and not disturbing animals with noisy motors or polluting their settings ahead of filming Planet earth II. The broadcaster contacted Torqeedo in 2014, which recommended its Travel 1003 model, rechargeable batteries and a solar panel for charging in the field. having almost silent power for their boats ensured the BBC team could get even closer to the animals, without

disturbing or distressing them. They were able to film pink river dolphins in the Amazon as well as jaguars from their boat. Tom Crowley, part of the BBC Natural history Unit for the Planet earth II series, said: “We were keen to get as close to the animals in their natural environment as possible, but their wellbeing and safety will always come first. Using Torqeedo’s electric motors ensures we can protect and preserve their habitat, whilst getting closer than we have been before.”

Torqeedo was named the Overall Winner at the 2016 DAMe Awards, hosted at this year’s Marine equipment Trade Show. Yacht and container ship collide

Beach BaGs halVed the number of plastic carrier bags found on UK beaches has dropped by almost half between 2015 and 2016 according to surveys carried out by the marine Conservation Society. this is the lowest number reported in over a decade, and is fantastic news for marine wildlife. However, although there has been a drop of almost four per cent in the number of litter items found on UK beaches, 268,384 individual items of litter were still collected at 364 events by just under 6,000 volunteers.

Ramsgate’s all weather lifeboat was launched to assist a small yacht which had been dismasted after a collision with a container ship 24 miles east of Ramsgate. another vessel was standing by, relaying the casualty’s VHF transmissions to the UK Coastguard as, due to having no mast, the yacht’s sole crew member was relying on a handheld radio. Once on scene the lifeboat crew confirmed that the yacht was not taking on any water and it was decided to tow the stricken vessel to the safety of Ramsgate Harbour.

Hampshire Police and Portsmouth City Council to ensure we dealt with this incident in the safest way possible, at the same time causing least disruption to the city.” Commander Del mcKnight, in charge of the bomb disposal team involved in the operation, said: “everything went smoothly and we were pleased to be able to get the operation completed in daylight. Despite being old, these devices still pose a very serious threat when they are moved.”

A man escaped injury after driving a jet ski into the side of a high-speed ferry on Southampton water. the Southampton to Cowes catamaran was undamaged and the man was picked up by a fellow jet skier. According to the Coastguard the red Funnel ferry turned around to make sure the man had been rescued before continuing to its destination.

Following a briefing with Chief Inspector Sharon wolrich, Fareham mP Suella Fernandes has urged boat owners in the Solent area to be vigilant and to secure property on their boats after a number of marine related thefts. In some cases smaller boats have been stolen in order to gain access to larger boats moored offshore.

SHACKLETON’S CENTENARY CELEBRATED THE Shackleton Collector’s Edition Box Set will mark the centenary of Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition. Classical composer Paul Frith, award-winning musician Ted Dwane (Mumford & Sons) and creative designer Ross Stirling have collaborated to bring to life the inspirational journey of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition. The partnership sees the launch of a limited edition vinyl box set featuring a newly composed

symphony and never-before-seen archive photography from Shackleton’s journey. Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition departed on 8 August 1914, but by January the party had become trapped in the Antarctic ice. Here they remained for 10 months with the hope that warmer spring weather would eventually free the ship’s hull, but instead it splintered it. The men were forced to abandon their camp and spent the next six months camping on an ice floe hoping that it would drift in the right direction. Finally they reached land and Shackleton split from the party to seek aid, and on the 30 August 1916 he returned to rescue all 22 members of his crew. Presented in a replica Venesta case – inspired by the original storage materials used on board – the unique photo collection chronologically follows Frith’s powerful symphony, invoking the hardships and adversities Shackleton and his men miraculously overcame. The four-part composition, recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, is presented on four 10” vinyl records encased in hand-stitched sleeves. The symphony takes the listener on Shackleton’s journey through soundscapes that evoke key moments from his incredible journey. Stop and Fix has released 250 limited edition box sets (£450) which include a rare glass plate slide featuring The Endurance stuck in the ice floes. An additional 750 sets, available to pre-order from www.stop-and-fix.com for £350, will be released in January.

TOUGH CONDITIONS AT THE NATIONAL RANKING SERIES Sophie Weguelin-Eilidh McIntyre, 470 Women Image: Sailing Energ

THE final weekend of racing at the 2016 RYA Olympic Classes National Ranking Series was not for the faint hearted, with windy and wintery conditions greeting competitors at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. It was a great opportunity for new and rising talents in the Olympic Classes to test out their racing skills against seasoned campaigners and British Sailing Team squad members. Open World Champion Megan Pascoe racked up the near-perfect scoreline to claim both the weekend and the 2016 series victories in the 2.4mR event. Ben Hazeldine-Ryan Orr also claimed the weekend and overall series double in the 470 Men’s fleet. Henry Wetherell got the better of his British Sailing Team squadmates Hector Simpson and Peter

McCoy in the Finn event, but the series win went to Markus Bettum. Georgia Booth-Esme Jones took the series crown in the 470 Women’s fleet and Nacra 17 pairing John Gimson-Anna Burnet scooped both event and series honours. RYA Podium Potential Manager Barrie Edgington said: “The National Ranking Series determines the best national sailors in the Olympic Classes and the importance for our developing sailors is that it provides a stepping stone from both youth to Olympic classes and from national to international events thanks to travel grants on offer.” Find out how the annual RYA Olympic Classes National Ranking Series plays a key stepping stone in sailors’ development here: http://bit.ly/2eN6IrV

BRITISH INNOVATION DOMINATES AWARDS

Raymarine’s Quantum Wireless CHIRP Marine Radar received a Special Mention at the DAME Design Awards

BRITISH businesses have been celebrating at the DAME Design Awards. Businesses from the UK received 40 per cent of the accolades presented at the awards for new marine equipment and accessories. British Marine members Harken picked up a Category Win, whilst Lewmar, Oceanair, Garmin, Raymarine UK, Scanstrut, CJR Propulsion, Volvo Penta, Navico UK, and Furuno UK were all awarded Special Mentions. It was in the competitive ‘marine electronics & marine related software’ category where innovations from a number of British Marine members shone. Furan’s DRS4D-NXT, the first solid-state radar in the world to use Furan exclusive Target Analyzers and Fast Target Tracking functions, Garmin’s quail 3 GPS smartwatch and Navigo’s B&G Vulcan 9,

which brings top sailing and safety technology to cruisers and club racers, all earned Special Mentions. Raymarine picked up two Special Mentions in this category alone with the Quantum Wireless CHIRP Marine Radar and its Ocean Scout TK Handheld Thermal Camera. Richard Selby, International Development Manager at British Marine, said: “Year-on-year we see British businesses standing out at marine awards and competitions across the globe. We strive to design future innovations and pioneer tomorrow’s technology which sees Britain consistently commanding recognition in the global marine industry. The 2016 DAME Design Awards are further confirmation of British excellence and heritage in cutting-edge design and revolutionary technology.”

SAILORS GET SET FOR ICONIC RACE

THE 72nd Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starts on 26 December. The Rolex Sydney Hobart, organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, has run every year since its inaugural race in 1945. A genuine test of human endeavour, this elite competition has, throughout its history, been defined by the pioneering feats and intrepid spirit of adventure of those who participate. 5,828 yachts have started the 71 editions of the race and 4,812 have finished. The beginning of the race is one of the most viewed sailing events in the world. During the start iconic landmarks like the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge are backdrops to the

action on the water as the fleet of around 100 yachts, ranging from 100ft cutting-edge Maxis crewed by elite professional sailing talent to 30ft family-sailed yachts, jostle for space at sea. The 628nm course takes the fleet south along the New South Wales coast of the Tasman Sea before crossing the eastern edge of Bass Strait, and continuing down the east coast of Tasmania before the final, sometimes frustratingly slow, leg up the Derwent River to the historic port of Hobart. Last year’s winner was the 52ft Balance. Defending this title will prove a difficult feat for Paul Clitheroe and his crew. The last yacht to win back-to-back races was Freya over 50 years ago. www.rolexsydneyhobart.com

AWARD FOR SUNSEEKER BRITAIN’S biggest boat builder, Sunseeker International is celebrating winning the Champion of British Manufacturing award at this year’s Walpole British Luxury Awards. The awards celebrate the best in craftsmanship, innovation and design from all sectors of the luxury industry. Phil Popham, CEO of Sunseeker International, said: “This award is a tribute to the skill and dedication of our 2,000 employees in Dorset where we have meticulously manufactured award winning luxury performance motor yachts for around 50 years. To be honoured amongst other prestigious British brands

such as Jimmy Choo, Tate Modern, Stella McCartney and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a hugely rewarding experience for the whole team.” The company recently announced that it will make a £50 million of investment in the next five years, spent across new products, improved shipyard facilities and the continued recruitment of people, with 225 joining the team in 2016. DOUBLE WORLD CHAMPION LAUNCHES NEW SAILBOAT NOT only has Glen Truswell won his second consecutive International 14 World Championship with Sam Pascoe but he has also launched a new dinghy sailboat brand. The entire Fusion Sailboats ‘project’ took place while Glen was bedridden, unable to walk (ironically for 14 weeks) following a freak training accident prior to the world championships. Glen said: The Fusion simply had to be something I would be proud to be seen using at the beach with my family. After a little thought and a single short phone call with Mark Knight from A.C Canoe and Dan Holman (who Glen co designed the Fusion with) a basic plan was formed and the work started.” www.fusionsailboats.co.uk

SUNSAIL is giving sailing clubs the chance to win big. The Sunsail Funding the Future for Sailing Clubs campaign is an opportunity for sailing and yacht clubs across the UK to win £5,000 to invest in their sailors. Entrants were asked to submit an innovative business plan detailing what they would do with the funding. Not only will the club with the best idea win the £5,000 cash injection to make their plans a reality, they will also meet record-breaking British sailor, Dee Caffari MBE, who will come to their club for a Q&A and celebration evening, as well as earning a place on Sunsail’s stand at the London

Boat Show in January to help promote their club to sailors from across the country. Dee Caffari MBE said: “I was never part of a sailing club growing up but now I am in a position where I am in more of an influential role and I see it as my responsibility to let the general public know that sailing clubs welcome new people to give them that experience on the water and hopefully get them excited about the sport of sailing.” The winning club will be announced on the Sunsail stand at the London Boat Show. www.sunsail.co.uk

ROW FOR JAMES THIS month four friends will be taking on the biggest challenge of their lives, rowing across the Atlantic Ocean unassisted. This challenge will be taken on in aid of the James Wentworth-Stanley Memorial Fund to raise awareness for depression, anxiety and suicide in young people and in particular young men. The captain of the team, Harry Wentworth-Stanley, lost his brother James to suicide at 21. The Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge is a test of mental and physical endurance. 20 teams from around the world will compete to cross the North Atlantic in the fastest time. Row For James have set themselves the target of winning this year’s race and will be competing in the

same boat rowed to victory by Ocean Reunion in 2015. Harry, Rory, Sam and Toby embarked on an intense physical training schedule, juggling their day jobs with morning and evening sessions to prepare their bodies for over a month of relentless rowing. Added to the physical are the more technical aspects of their preparations, including rowing technique, navigation and safety. Row For James are aiming to raise more than £300,000 for the charity, which equates to £100 for every mile rowed. This will be put towards setting up the first in a series of non-clinical crisis centres for those at high risk of suicide, to be known as James’ Place – a service that does not currently exist in the UK. www.rowforjames.com

Team Akzonobel, skippered by Simeon Tienpont, were the first team to be announced. Charles said: “With this announcement the team is in the ‘starting blocks’ early and that will give us an advantage to find the best crew and to train as much as possible. But this is not an easy task – the next edition of the race is the longest and hardest yet with three times as much Southern Ocean racing to do.” It has also been announced that the next race will feature two southeast Asian stops, Hong Kong and Guangzhou. It will be the fourth consecutive edition that the sailors have stopped in China. In total, the race will visit 11 cities in five continents, starting in Alicante and taking in Lisbon, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Auckland, Itajaí, newport, Cardiff and Gothenburg before the finish in The Hague. www.volvooceanrace.com

On 2 April eight young people aged between 14 and 18 will begin the adventure of their life as they sail 1,735nm around the coast of Britain. Aspire360 is being organised by Morvargh Sailing Project and is open to young people from across the UK. They will have very little or no sailing experience but will be supported by a team of eight adults. The trip will begin and end in Sutton Harbour, Plymouth, and is expected to take five weeks to complete on board Morvargh Sailing Project’s 57ft ketch, Helen Mary R. The start of the event will also mark the day that Morvargh Sailing gets back into the water following three years of fundraising for the renewal of the rigging for commercial coding (the licence to operate at sea). Captain Matthew Barraud said; “The young people will swap the comforts of home for single bunks, a moving deck and having to learn how to cook, clean

and look after each other as they get used to their new home. “It will be a challenge that will see them battle strong winds, freezing temperatures and rough seas at times; as well as marvelling at our beautiful coastline under sun-drenched skies. It will be a feat of pure physical, mental, emotional and academic endurance.” At the heart of ASPIRE360 are a number of educational objectives. not only will the young people be encouraged to push their personal boundaries throughout, they will also learn about themselves as individuals, in their relationships with others and importantly improve their academic skills. The trip has been designed to link into the national Curriculum and every activity on board will deepen their understanding of the core subjects. UK TRIaLs FOR bOTTLe bUOY A potentially lifesaving rescue device fashioned from empty plastic bottles has been trialled in the UK for the first time by the RNLI. The flotation device consists of three empty plastic bottles screwed into a central core. Once the bottles are locked in place, the resulting object is a three-pointed star, which can be thrown to a casualty in the water to keep them afloat. The bottle buoy is the brainchild of huddersfield student James Benson, who came up with the idea, built a prototype and entered an International Maritime Rescue Federation competition. The RNLI learned of it and approached James to see if the bottle buoy could play a part in rescues in low or middle income countries. Stuart Thompson, from the RNLI’s International Development team, said: “We have links with the IMRF and since learning about the buoy we have been working closely with James to assess how easily it could be mass produced. In May we ran some trials with an injury prevention organisation called the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh. This was part of our international work to improve search and rescue capacity in countries with high drowning rates.” bottlebuoy.com

Masonic lodge sets sail Provincial Grand Master Mike Wilks who is pushing the formation of ‘specialist’ lodges.

The country’s first ‘boating’ masonic lodge has set sail in Southampton. More than 200 freemasons attended the consecration of Spinnaker Lodge, which will meet in various locations around the masonic province of hampshire and Isle of Wight. With 9,000 members in the province, which includes Christchurch and Bournemouth, and many of them keen sailors, it became clear that there was sufficient demand for a specialist lodge. Its first master, Frank Milner, said: “It is always a special occasion when a new lodge is formed and it was a great evening. There was a clear demand among the province’s masons for a new lodge for those with an interest in sailing. “Lodge meetings will be held on a regular basis in spring and late summer at various Masonic centres around the Solent, all of which are close to marinas. Members will arrive by boat, enjoy a ‘pontoon party’ in the afternoon before attending the lodge meeting in the evening.”

electing the correct clothing can make a huge difference to a sailor’s comfort and performance, which in turn is vital for the wearer’s confidence, safety and agility whilst on board and overall enjoyment of boating and watersports.

feeT firsT When selecting footwear the key areas to focus on are those that affect comfort, performance and safety for sailors via the use of the latest materials and innovative designs combined with quality and detailed construction. Safety via grip - You need to be able to move about the deck safely and securely without fear of slipping on wet surfaces. Grip is provided via the design and constructive materials of the outsole, which needs to push excess water out from underneath your foot thus allowing friction with the deck surface and therefore grip. Innovative design – the structural components of marine footwear are selected for their low moisture absorption, fast drying and/or fast draining qualities. Sailing boots are designed especially to prevent water from entering the foot area via fully taped seams and waterproof leather, whilst high performance deck trainers are designed with lightness, quick drying and super low water absorbency in mind.

correcT APPAreL When selecting your sailing apparel it is important to look for a product that provides function and design features for the correct end use and within your price range. The cruising sailor normally has a features wish list that includes comfort, ladies fit options, durability, ease of pocket access, safety features and fresh colour palettes. The racing sailor, meanwhile, will be looking for a product that is light weight, ergonomic, aerodynamic, extremely breathable, offers stretch and complete freedom of movement whilst also offering a team look. fuTure TecHnoLogy The development of fabrics has come on in incredible strides over recent years. The restrictive and heavy oilskins of old have now been superseded by lightweight, ergonomic and extremely comfortable garments. The progression of marine technical clothing going forward will be through the further development of performance enhancing fabrics, stretch fabrics, intelligent insulation and pioneering design features. These developments will reflect the need for performance clothing that mirrors the increasing popularity of more high performance sailing boats. With so many sports becoming more accessible, the consumer is constantly looking for products that are multi-functional and can be worn for both every day use and as sporting attire for a variety of sporting activities. www.henrilloyd.com

BOATING PEOPLE

Stuart McIntosh cruising on the Solent

STUART MCINTOSH, COWES HARBOUR MASTER AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE and my Master’s certificate, I managed to get jobs on some of the larger motor superyachts and spent a very enjoyable and challenging 10 years or so in that field, culminating in working on Lady Moura and as Captain on Kingdom 5KR.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COWES HARBOUR MASTER AND HOW DID THE ROLE COME ABOUT?

I had always been interested in the port harbour master’s role and towards the end of my superyachting days I saw the job in Cowes advertised, applied and was very pleased to be appointed Deputy Harbour Master / Designate Harbour Master. I spent 18 months learning the job from my predecessor Henry Wrigley and took over the role at the end of 1998.

L to R: Rod Hodgson, Deputy Harbour Master and Pilot, Capt. Stuart McIntosh, Harbour Master, and Jon Kidd, Assistant Harbour Master and Pilot.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE NAVY AND ON SUPERYACHTS.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR JOB?

I went to sea as a cadet aged 16 and served with Esso until I got my Master’s certificate at the ripe old age of 26. I had always had an ambition to do some long distance cruising and during my last few years with Esso I had built a 43ft cruising yacht in a field in the middle of Warwickshire, with a lot of help from a very good family friend. I decided to go cruising for a couple of years. I sailed with some friends down to the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean and down into South America. After a very enjoyable winter in the Caribbean we sailed back across the pond to the UK. I then decided to try my hand at superyachts, and with my background in the Merchant Navy

All AT SeA AUGUST 2012

Picking three highlights, the first has to be the America’s Cup Jubilee in 2001, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the America’s Cup, which was staged by the Royal Yacht Squadron. It was an absolutely fantastic spectacle and will probably remain my biggest highlight. To see the J Class yachts all lined up and hitting the Squadron line as the start cannon fired was an incredible sight. Another highlight was the wonderful spectacle provided by the 2011 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race start in Cowes, again from the Royal Yacht Squadron. More recently the Queen’s visit to Cowes as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour in 2012 was a great occasion for Cowes.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN CHALLENGES?

I think probably the biggest challenge is as Cowes Harbour Commission looks to play our role in the development and evolution of Cowes, to ensure that Cowes provides the right balance of new services and facilities for yachtsmen, recognising the harbour’s importance as a ferry port and a commercial port, but balancing that against the unique history of Cowes. As part of that process the delivery of the Cowes Outer Harbour Project, that is really the culmination of a vision that was set over 150 years ago, has been extremely challenging, but also rewarding.

TELL US ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COWES FOR BOATERS? Cowes has a worldwide reputation for yachting. I think it is a unique place. You have got some of the strongest tides, busy shipping channels and yet some of the best sailing in the world, complemented by the famous yacht clubs and a town that is 100 per cent geared up to delivering the yachting fraternity with first-class services. It is true that throughout the world people might not have heard of the Isle of Wight, but quite often they have heard of Cowes.

FOR THOSE WHO MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TO COWES FOR MANY YEARS, WHAT CHANGES HAVE THERE BEEN?

Those who have not been for the last couple of years will find a new breakwater has been constructed. In addition, over the last 10 years or so there have been a number of incremental changes from the RYS Haven at the entrance, to Trinity Landing, the investment into Cowes Yacht Haven, Shepards Wharf and Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club.

To advertise here please call Tom on 01489 585 205 or email tombrooks@allatsea.co.uk

WHAT IS THE LONG-TERM VISION FOR COWES HARBOUR?

Our vision is to make sure that we continue to deliver first-class port facilities and leisure services, whilst maintaining the balance between the needs of leisure sailors, the ferry and commercial port as well as marine employment. Cowes Harbour is a living, working port that is at the heart of the island and an important gateway to the Isle of Wight.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE BOATING LIFESTYLE?

I have spent my life either at sea or working with the sea, and I think it is a unique lifestyle that is in your blood, and it is the people you meet who make it really special.

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

Dame Ellen MacArthur, not only for what she has achieved in her solo sailing career but also her drive and passion and for what she has achieved with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and also her foundation. In addition to Ellen, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston because of his tenacity, obviously for the achievements in his early sailing career but also because he is still carrying out single-handed transatlantic sailing at his more ‘experienced’ age.

SKIN CARE AT SEA

Dermatologic care should be a consideration for any sailor heading offshore whether it is for five days or five months. Several skin conditions can arise through a lack of skin protection, inadequate hygiene and intense weather conditions: ■ Xerosis – dry skin ■ Hyperkeratosis – calluses and corns on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet due to pressure and rubbing ■ Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) – fungal growth between the toes and on the sole of the foot ■ Dyshidrosis – blistering on the hands and feet ■ Folliculitis – inflammation of the hair follicles; rash on the neck, wrists and bottom ■ Thermal burns – often by cooking equipment and sunburn During the 2008 - 2009 Volvo Ocean race, 67 incidents of skin infections and sores were recorded, while a further 54 cases were of the dreaded ‘gunwale

Hand scaling during the 2012 AG2R

bum’, a rash on your bottom caused by spending too much time in wet foul weather gear and sitting on a wet deck. Similarity, 83 per cent of the 2012 AG2R skippers had a skin condition even before they set off for the transatlantic race from France to the West Indies. By the end of the 22 day race, 95 per cent of the skippers were suffering from fungal infections, burns, hyperkeraosis and xerosis.

BEATING THE ELEMENTS

So how can a sailor combat the heat, cold, humidity and constant contact with salt water? Barrier creams are the best primary defence. Sudocream is particularly good for preventing the dreaded folliculitis or gunwale bum (in combination with a considerable amount of talcum powder), while Exomega made by A-Derma can be used on both the face and hands. I used this everyday throughout the Transat along with a couple of pairs of Sealskin Dragon Eye gloves, which dramatically reduced skin scaling.

NO TIME TO BATHE

Bathing and changing clothes is another defence, yet 86 per cent of skippers during the AG2R reported not bathing daily, nor changing clothes for at least five days at a time. Although it can be difficult to take a ‘bird bath’ during rough conditions, a squeezy bottle filled with fresh water is an excellent way to rinse salt water off the face, neck and wrists. Simple cleansers that do not require

rinsing, such as Eau Thermale Avenue, are also very good, and preferable to wet wipes which tend to dry out the skin. Wet wipes are also useless if they fall in the bilge water or dry out themselves during the race.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

The daily application of athlete’s foot powder or talcum powder along with a fresh pair of socks every three days prevents tinea pedis. I had three pairs of SealSkinz’s waterproof socks which I wore on rotation throughout the Transat, along with a pair of Lizard boots, both proving to have excellent waterproofing. On top of these preventative measures, numerous medical creams can be taken on board. I had to carry seven specifically for treating skin conditions during the Transat race. Flammazine is a particularly effective cream that can be used for burns, blisters and grazes. As a last resort

for particularly nasty skin infections, antibiotics can be taken. Finally, sunscreen is an absolute must during offshore sailing. Even in overcast conditions it can help to prevent the face from drying out with the force of the wind. My favourite product is Heliocare’s SPF50 Spray or Oil Free gel. With a nongreasy feel, it does not run into your eyes and is particularly effective thanks to the addition of Fernblock, an extract from Polypodium Leucotomos (a fern originating from Central America). Applying after-sun at night-time can also help the skin to recover. There is very little protection from the sun’s rays on racing boats – a bimini would have been a very luxurious item to have on board my Mini while racing to Guadeloupe! t is important not to confuse choking with other emergencies when the casualty may appear to have difficulty breathing. If the obstruction is mild the casualty will be able to answer or cough and will recover without assistance. If the casualty is unable to answer they may clutch or point to their throat to indicate the problem. Choking frequently occurs during eating.

BELOW: Give up to five sharp blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand

3. If the obstruction is not relieved continue alternating five abdominal thrusts with five back slaps. 4. If the casualty becomes unconscious commence CPR. 5. Abdominal thrusts may cause serious internal injury. Medical advice should be sought if they have been carried out and the casualty observed for evidence of internal injury. Following successful treatment for choking, foreign material may remain in the upper or lower respiratory tract and cause complications later. A casualty with a persistent cough, difficulty swallowing, or with the

sensation of an object being still stuck in the throat, should always be referred for a medical opinion. Next month we will be looking at how to deal with shock.

Splash proof and ring bound, First Aid Companion is a handy reference guide covering all the key topics surrounding first aid afloat. The book contains all the topics to be featured in this series, plus more, and although it should not be seen as a replacement for completing a first aid course, it could really help to make the difference if you find yourself in a potentially harmful or life-threatening situation at sea.

1. Casualty still conscious? Attempt to dislodge the object. Stand beside the casualty and lean them forward supporting them with an arm. Give up to five sharp blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your other hand. Check after each slap to see if the object has dislodged.

For the abdominal thrusts clench a fist and place it midway between the belly button and the bottom end of the breast bone

2. This does not relieve the situation? Do abdominal thrusts. Stand behind the casualty and lean them forward, putting both arms around the upper part of their abdomen. Clench a fist and place it midway between the belly button and the bottom end of the breast bone. Grasp this hand with the other and pull sharply upwards and inwards. Repeat up to five times checking after each thrust to see if the object has dislodged.

s it arches its way into Southampton’s Centre, the Itchen Bridge is an imposing feature of the eastern side of the city for road and water users alike. Few users, though, realise that the Woolston side of the bridge is an area rich in maritime history that goes right back to Roman times when the settlement at Clausentum (now Bitterne) was an important base for their south coast expansion. However, with the growth of Southampton as a port and docking area, there was a growing need for people to cross the river close to its mouth, when the first crossing point was some five miles inland. The answer lay in the Itchen ferrymen, who over time established a small community on the eastern bank of the river, close by the much larger village of Woolston.

Growth of A villAGe Clinging to the shoreline, the village became known as Itchen Ferry and it provided not only the operators of the ferries crossing over to Crosshouse on the Southampton side, but fishermen and, with the rise of the large racing yachts, sought after crewmen. As with so many of these medieval villages, even into Victorian times, Itchen Ferry retained a character that was quite distinct from the larger communities that were rapidly growing around it. Residents from Itchen Ferry were known as ‘Algerines’ whilst a stone’s throw away, the good people of Woolston were called ‘Spike Islanders’. The changing face of 19th century Britain would start to alter their fortunes when, in 1836, a steam powered chain ferry was constructed. This allowed for the creation of a

solent based dinghy sailor david henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.

MAkinG heAdlines In the 1880s the name of Itchen Ferry would achieve notoriety in the national newspapers when a gruesome court case involving a young sailor from the village became something of a cause celebre. A 52ft yacht had been purchased by an Australian who employed a delivery crew, including the young Richard Parker as cabin boy, to sail his yacht home. Disaster struck the yacht somewhere off the Cape of Good Hope, forcing the crew to take to their tender. After drifting for days Parker, who had drunk some salt water, lapsed into a coma and, following an unwritten rule of the sea, was eaten by his desperate colleagues.

After they had been rescued the long arm of the law caught up with the survivors who were charged with murder, found guilty and sentenced to death. After a public outcry the sentence was commuted and in the end they only served six months, though the affair brought about a major change in the law. As for poor Richard Parker, his bloody end is recorded on a memorial in a local church. new century beGins With the arrival of the 20th century, the shoreline of the River Itchen was changing rapidly as the Woolston shipyard of John Thornycroft was starting to expand with building destroyers for the Admiralty. At the same time air power was starting to flex its new muscles with Sopwith, then Pemberton-Billing building aircraft in the area, and with seaplanes being very much in demand, a new slipway was constructed for their launch and recovery. The area would then get a new claim to fame as the expansive Supermarine factory building was constructed, dominating the landscape. It would be a moot point if the Supermarine site was in Woolston or Itchen Ferry; it was the home of the prototype Spitfire and by 1938 full production, along with many other aircraft types, was in full swing. wAr tArGet However, come the outbreak of hostilities in 1939, the proximity of Thornycroft and Supermarine marked the area out as a prime target for the Luftwaffe bombers.

Close by the shore of the River Itchen is the Memorial garden to the lost community of Itchen Ferry

Just days after the Battle of Britain had reached its climax, on 24 September, a heavy force of Heinkel bombers speared their way up Southampton Water to bomb both Thornycrofts and Supermarine. Two days later they repeated the attack, causing serious damage to the factories. It is not clear if the nearby houses, home to many of the workers, were actively targeted or if they were just ‘collateral damage’ but in one afternoon, the community that was Itchen Ferry was blasted into oblivion and ceased to exist. 97 people were killed and as many more injured whilst the damage to the area was so extensive that the remains of the village were effectively abandoned. The ruins did serve one useful purpose; with D-Day looming, troops practiced house to house warfare techniques in Itchen Ferry before, with the return of peace, the area was redeveloped as an industrial zone. PreservinG the MeMories In just one terrible afternoon the name of Itchen Ferry had almost been expunged from our language, but in some small ways it lives on. The Itchen Ferry Society works to preserve the memory of the small gaff rigged cutters that bear the name whilst a local school took on the task of researching and then supporting the provision of a charming memorial to the people and the village itself. For visitors a trip to the memorial garden is an interesting reminder of an area, rich in sailing history that disappeared – in an afternoon.

TRAINING AT ChIChesTeR

Cobnor Activities Centre Trust is perfectly placed to deliver the mission. It is an independent charity and training centre based on the Chidham peninsula in Chichester Harbour at the end of the Bosham Channel. The centre delivers outdoor, residential and environmental activities from beginner level up to instructor courses. Its sheltered waters (accessible at all states of the tide) are not only ideal for young and novice sailors but the environmental significance makes it a great venue to appreciate first-hand the

The centre is surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area for birdlife meaning it has to manage its working activities and day-today operations in a rich living landscape. Add to this the bucket loads of enthusiasm, championed by head of centre Gary Palmer, for The Green Blue’s instructor training with the centre team as well as the wider IOL family and the result is that hundreds of youngsters experiencing the centre each season will go on to understand how to take care of the marine environment through fun games, hands-on activities and simple messaging. A variety of topics are covered including pollution from oil, fuel, chemicals and litter to boating carefully around wildlife and preventing the spread of invasive non-native species.

PETS ALL AT SEA If you enjoy boating, you probably enjoy taking your friends out on your boat to share the exhilaration of getting afloat – especially if those friends happen to have four legs and a tail.

THE

Masterclass

BEFORE taking your dog on a boat it is important to think about the steps you can take to keep your pet safe and happy while on the water. Top doggy tips ■ Give your pet a chance to get acquainted with the boat before setting sail ■ Always keep plenty of fresh drinking water available ■ Provide a shaded area – excessive sun exposure causes problems for humans and animals alike ■ Protect their feet – dogs absorb heat through the pads on their feet and boat surfaces can get very hot in the sun

■ Keep your first trip short to let your dog get used to the boat’s surroundings and movement A lifejacket can help keep your pet safe while on board your boat or around any body of water. Give your pet a chance to get used to wearing the lifejacket before getting on a boat, and it is a good idea to allow your pet to practice swimming while wearing it too. If you want to take your furry friend further afield, although the UK has relaxed its quarantine rules to an extent, it still only allows pets to be brought into the UK without quarantine under certain conditions.

PET TRAVEL SCHEME

In order for pet dogs, cats and ferrets from any country to enter the UK without quarantine they must first comply with the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme. These rules differ depending on the country or territory the pet is coming from. The scheme also means that people in the UK can take their dogs, cats and ferrets to any country and bring them back to the UK using an approved transport company without the need for the animals to enter quarantine. The rules do not permit owners to bring pets into the UK using a private boat or with a transport company that has not successfully negotiated an agreement, called a Required Method of Operation, with DEFRA. Pet owners can use the routes and transport companies detailed at http:// www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/ travel/pets/routes/ to bring their pets into the UK under PETS, subject to the transport company’s agreement. These rules are in place to keep the UK free from rabies and certain other diseases. The current regulations have been in force since 2012 when the UK brought its procedures in line with the European Union.

BRITISH ISLES

Give your pet a chance to get acquainted with the boat before setting sail

The UK does, however, allow travel between the UK and Northern Ireland, the UK and the Isle of Man and the UK and the Channel Islands. The UK does not currently require documentation for these movements, although you may wish to travel with your pet’s passport, if available. As it is prohibited to bring a pet into the UK on a private boat from another country, PETS advises that you keep a ship’s log. Note the ports you have

A lifejacket can help keep your pet safe

entered in order to avoid problems with port officials on re-entry to the UK. In the event of problems at sea which, for example, result in the vessel making an emergency stop in a port outside the British Isles for repairs, your cat, dog or ferret would require six months quarantine on re-entry to the UK. It is therefore recommended that your cat/ dog is prepared under PETS to avoid any such risks. The RYA aims to provide members with practical advice on all aspects of boating, including boating with pets abroad. Join today and you can support the RYA in protecting your boating rights and freedoms. Take advantage of free advice and support on all aspects of your boating, as well as enjoying a range of member offers. www.rya.org.uk Further information is also available from the Pet Travel Scheme on 0370 241 1710 or visit https://www.gov.uk/pet-travelinformation-for-pet-owners

WHAT’S SUP?

COSTS START FROM AROUND £700 FOR A DECENT INFLATABLE ALL THE WAY UP TO £2,500 FOR A FULL CARBON RACEBOARD

If you want to check out what hardboards can offer have a look at the trendsetting Starboard: star-board-sup.com/2016

Stand up paddle boarding has been around since the 1950s but it has only been in the last 10 years that its popularity has really taken off. You can paddle board anywhere there is water

P

addle boarding is currently the fastest growing watersport in the world, and you have probably spotted them at your local beach or out on rivers and lakes across the UK. Its resurgence was due, in part, to Hawaiian big wave surfers looking for ways to train when the surf is flat. Fast forward 10 years and SUP’s popularity is thanks to its versatility. Whatever your particular interest it is more than likely you will be able to do it on a paddle board. Whether you want to go flat water cruising, get fit, go fishing, explore your nearby coastline, surf waves or just have fun with the family you will never get bored. A further benefit is that they can be used when there is not much wind to sail, so no more frustrating time spent waiting for wind. INFLATABLE BOARDS There are a host of different types of paddle boards on the market so people can choose the best option for their paddle boarding needs. However, unless you want to be competing for national titles then an inflatable board

is probably the best way to go for the entry and intermediate boarder. The inflatable SUPs from Red Paddle Co are a good place to start, offering good designs and technological innovations. Paddle boards also make great tenders and a number have room for transporting kit. In addition they are ideal for working on a boat at the water line and, unlike their surfboard cousins, provide large, stable platforms.

THE RISE OF SUP Why is the humble SUP seeing such a rapid growth in the UK? You do not need lots of equipment. In fact, all you need to get started is a paddle board, a paddle and a leash. And a buoyancy aid, just in case you fall off. Inflatable boards can be packed down into small bags and then are simply inflated for hours of fun. They are ideal for boat owners as they can be stowed easily. Also their high durability will mean that no damage will be done to the board no matter what you throw at it. Composite boards (like surf boards) may offer slightly better surfing and racing performance but are difficult to transport and store. Learning the basics of SUP is quick and easy, allowing you to be up and paddling in no time. So do not think you have not got the time, or patience, or have left it too late in life. It is never too late to learn to paddle board. Whatever your age, gender or previous watersport experience, just give it a go. Falling in, which is what most people fear, is actually a lot harder than it looks.

GO ANYWHERE You can paddle board literally anywhere there is water. So wherever you live there is a good chance that you can get out paddling and explore places you previously may not have had access to. SUP can be a social activity too. It is great for the whole family to enjoy, and to do with friends. You can take your children or dog out for a paddle and put them on the front for hours of entertainment. As the kids get a bit bigger there are some great junior boards around that are designed for the smaller boarders, including shorter, lightweight paddles. You can meet new people through a whole host of clubs and social groups. This could be by going for a paddle to the local pub or long distance explorations. HAVE A WORKOUT Paddle boarding can provide a full body workout, as it does not just focus on your arms and upper body, as many people think. With the correct paddling technique you can engage your core muscles in every stroke, aiding core stability and improving both balance and strength. It can be a low impact, holistic workout, to get fit or stay in shape, and if you paddle hard then it can be a great cardio workout too. In October competitors from across the country congregated at Watergate Bay in Cornwall to compete in the eighth BSUPA National Sup Surf Championship. Taking this year’s Open Men’s title was Aaran Rowe from Jersey, while in the Open Women, defending champion Tina Beresford from Newquay retained her title. In the Under 16 Boy category Ben Pye from South Devon, took the win.

If you are considering purchasing a stand up paddle board, then the best one to go for is an inflatable, which can be easily transported and stored. SEE THE WILDLIFE Paddle boarding is also an incredibly quiet pastime, so you are likely to be able to get up close and personal with nature and see more wildlife. Standing on a paddle board gives you a whole new perspective of the land and sea. In fact you will almost feel like you are walking on water. SUP allows you to have a great view across the water and land, but also what is going on underneath the water. This is a great feeling and also useful for those wanting to have a clear view of the fish below without disturbing them; whether you are there to fish or simply admire. There are a host of clips on the internet of incredible encounters with everything from great whites to orcas, although in the UK you are more likely to spot something a little less imposing. GO FOR THE WIN If you are of the competitive nature then most weekends will see an SUP race of some description happening around the country in a range of conditions and locations. For those more interested in surf there are a host of events where you can really test your skills against others and have a great time doing it. If you want to get really serious there are international races and world championship events to aim for. Red Paddle Co offers a great range of products that will get you on the water in next to no time. redpaddleco.com British Stand Up Paddle Association: www.bsupa.org.uk

SAILING ALL YEAR Last year John took part in a trip to the Varvassi Wreck as part of the RYA Active Marina programme. He was really impressed with the skills and teaching demonstrated by Urban Truant and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. In the future he would love to experience Cowes Week in one of the larger racing boats. We have been members of a few clubs, including Chichester Yacht Club and Eastney Cruising

HIDDEN GEMS We enjoy cruising around the Solent, and Port Solent is in a safe harbour with great access to Portsmouth, Langstone and Chichester. A great place to anchor up is Clamerkin Lake at Newtown Creek, and Osbourne Bay is also a really nice place to visit. We would like to go to Noss on Dart. Being a Premier marina is a big draw for us as we know it will be safe and we will be made to feel welcome. We also like the idea that we will not dry out in its deep water pontoons or have to fight for a berth like at Dartmouth. We are familiar with the area having sailed up the River Dart to Totnes and back down to Dittisham and anchored there. It was very quiet. We are looking forward to making use of the facilities and taking the journey in our very comfortable boat. We have only ever done one trip across the channel in this Beneteau; we cannot afford the fuel!

We are looking forward to joining in the camaraderie and activities at Port Solent Yacht Club this winter, perhaps going to some of their lectures and combining it with a visit to Wetherspoon’s for lunch – there is a lady there who can pour a good pint of Guinness. ONE BIG FAMILY We have been Premier berth holders since the very beginning when they took over Chichester Marina in 1994. Since then we have berthed at Southsea Marina, have spent a brief spell at Swanwick Marina and been back to both Southsea and Chichester and have seen them all very much improved. Now at Port Solent, we like being in a working harbour as you meet seaman as well as fellow berth holders. We see ourselves as being part of a family and, of course, Port Solent is a convenient and quiet marina. www.premiermarinas.com

BIG NIGHT OUT

A happy foursome head into Fat Olives, just over the road, and explain that they love coming here once a month. They actually live in Petersfield, around 14 miles away, and so have many good choices locally. Fair praise indeed.

Delicious fish & chips at Blue Bell

THE HIKE

The Solent Way ends at Emsworth, so head back over to Langstone for a decent six mile circular walk along the coast, enjoying the twitching of seabirds one way and the graveyard at Warblington the other. Mill ponds, ducks and pubs, you could be in Suffolk. With a choice of pubs for lunch, The Ship seems popular.

MARINA FOCUS

ALL AT SEA DECEMBER 2016

KING POINT MARINA King Point Marina Brunel Way, Millbay Plymouth, PL1 3EF T: 01752 424 297 E: marina@kingpointmarina.co.uk

King Point Marina is a striking, contemporary marina built three years ago in the heart of Plymouth’s dynamic new Coastal Quarter. PLYMOUTH is a prime destination for sailing enthusiasts, sitting on the cusp of some of the finest cruising waters in the world, and home to famous maritime legends. The city is a regular host for worldclass watersports events and sailing championships such as The Transat, The Rolex Fastnet, America’s Cup and La Solitaire du Figaro. King Point Marina opened in October 2013 after an eight-month project by Sutton Harbour Holdings to build the first new marina created in the UK for almost five years. The £4 million development was designed to blend maritime history

with dramatic contemporary design, transforming Millbay’s historic basin and creating a modern shoreside building with first-class amenity facilities. As well as new shoreside facilities and an award-winning restaurant with stunning views of Plymouth Sound, King Point Marina is just minutes away from Plymouth’s thriving city centre and its myriad of entertainments, shops, restaurants, world-class historic sites and visitor attractions. The marina is also perfectly situated in Britain’s Ocean City for sailing enthusiasts, offering easy access to the world-class cruising waters and miles of South West coastline.

FACILITIES

The standard of facilities and quality of service provided by marina staff is regularly cited by berth-holders and visitors alike as being a major reason they choose King Point Marina. Alongside 171 berths, the marina features a contemporary two-storey building, which houses a marina office and facilities including showers, toilets and amenity areas for berth-holders. All the facilities were designed with the environment in mind and adhere to the Green Blue Marine Design Guidance, striving to demonstrate environmental best practice and reduce the impact on coastal and inland waters. A few months after it was officially opened, The Dock restaurant opened on the first floor of the

marina building, and is now one of the highest rated restaurants in Plymouth according to TripAdvisor. All berth holders are given an Experience Card offering discounts in local restaurants, cafés, shops and attractions around both King Point Marina and its sister marina in Sutton Harbour, and there is a full programme of events and training sessions with the RYA through its Active Marina Programme. Renowned yacht brokerage firm Red Ensign opened a new sales office last year, offering a comprehensive brokerage service for yachts and motorboats. Gael Force Marine Chandlery is based at Sutton Harbour on Fish Quay and opens from 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with a large range of marine equipment on sale including electronics, maintenance products and general chandlery.

BERTHING & STORAGE

The marina offers peaceful berthing for 171 boats within the inner basin of Millbay’s historic docks, originally designed by celebrated Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1857 and restored as part of the multi-million pound regeneration of the whole area. King Point Marina can accommodate yachts and motorboats, both mono and multi-hull, up to a maximum of 25m length overall and 2.5m draft, at all states of tide. All berths are secure pontoon berths and the wet berth marina has hardwood deck floating walkways and fingers. All also have a metered electricity supply and access to water. There are no yard services on site, but Plymouth has a good selection of boat yards with some offering discounted services to berth holders. Flexible pricing and berthing options are available, including long leases from five to 20 years and reward schemes. The Cruising Credit scheme will refund 40 per cent of any fees from visitors using your berth if you are away for more than seven nights, and the marina offers discounts through its Refer–A-Friend programme.

ACCESS

King Point Marina enjoys a safe, sheltered location in the heart of Plymouth, which is easy to reach by land and sea, and just three hours from London. By sea – Lat 50º 21’ .56N Long 04º 09’.20W When approaching the marina contact King Point Marina on VHF Ch12. Enter Plymouth Sound from either the Eastern or Western Channels. King Point Marina is located within the inner basin of Millbay, on the west side of Plymouth’s waterfront, offering sheltered berths with depths of 2.5 metres below Chart Datum. Access is freeflow at all states of the tide. In unusual weather conditions there may be restrictions to access to and from the marina by vessel. The entrance to King Point Marina is situated to the north of Millbay Docks outer basin. Fixed red and green port

and starboard navigational lights are permanently on display on the outer extremities of the approach to the entrance. For navigational safety, it is important vessels requiring entry to or egress from King Point Marina are aware of scheduled cross-channel ferry services operating from Millbay. Passage is prohibited whilst large vessels are manoeuvring in the outer harbour area. Scheduled arrival and departure times are posted on noticeboards in and around the marina, and electronic copies are available at kingpointmarina.co.uk. By road - The A38 Devon Expressway connects Plymouth with the national motorway network and the M5. To reach King Point Marina, follow signs for the city centre and the Brittany Ferries port in Millbay. By rail - Mainline rail services are available to Plymouth from all over the country.

Tell us about your marina in 500 words: editor@allatsea.co.uk

CRUISING

Offering both new facilities and plenty of maritime history, the marina enjoys an enviable position in the midpoint of the West Country, equally as close to Cornwall and its spectacular coastline as it is to the rugged moors of Devon for those looking to visit Dartmoor and Exmoor. There are a number of locations within easy reach for a day trip, with the Rivers Yealm and Tamar, Lyner and Cawsands all being popular with boat owners. Atmospheric West Country fishing villages and towns including Brixham, Dartmouth, Salcombe and Torquay to the east in Devon and picturesque Cornish ports like Fowey and Falmouth to the west are all popular weekend sailing destinations. For a longer trip away, the Isles of Scilly are just 94nm away. After arriving at the harbour on St Mary’s, the largest of the islands, you can explore the smaller islands of Tresco, Bryher, St Martin’s and St Agnes before returning to Plymouth. The Channel Islands and the French coast are also both within striking distance. Guernsey and Cherbourg in France are both 110nm away, and Brest 130.

RECOMMENDATIONS

This summer King Point Marina played host to more than 40 iconic Hurley sailing boats celebrating the 50th anniversary of the line, which was designed and built in Plymouth, with a major national weekend rally. The Hurley Owners’ Association staged a hugely popular event called Bring Your Hurley Home with Hurley vessels berthing at King Point Marina and using the marina building, with the event supported by marina staff and operators Sutton Harbour Holdings plc. Stephen Dart, from the Hurley Owners’ Association, said: “We were delighted to stage the Bring Your Hurley Home event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the new Hurley line in Plymouth where it all began, and are grateful to the fabulous King Point Marina for hosting us.”

LOCAL EATERIES

The marina’s on-site restaurant, The Dock, offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menus and caters for all tastes with a wide range of dishes made using locally sourced ingredients. The Dock includes a spacious outside veranda enjoying stunning views across the sound. The newly opened PICNIC Coffee & Kitchen café is nearby on Millbay Road opposite Plymouth Pavilions. The café is open for breakfast and lunch offering a range of sweet and savoury baked goods made inhouse, including gluten-free options. Opposite PICNIC is the historic Duke of Cornwall Hotel, which offers formal dining in its restaurant, an informal light lunch in the lounge or a luxurious Tea at the Top afternoon tea in its famous tower overlooking the marina. One of Plymouth’s most acclaimed restaurants, Rock Salt, is a five minute walk, and its sister restaurant, Salumi Bar and Eatery, is even closer, serving up tapas and traditional favourites. Slightly further afield are Plymouth Hoe, Sutton Harbour and the Barbican, offering a choice of picturesque waterfront cafés and restaurants. Experience Card holders can enjoy a discount at many venues. Highly recommended are the Barbican Kitchen, The Glassblowing House, Quay 33, The Stable and Mitch Tonks’ Rockfish. To find out more see www.visitsuttonharbour.co.uk. Or visitors can try the stunning historic setting of the nearby Royal William Yard, where celebrity chef Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall has his River Cottage Canteen & Deli and other venues include Wagamamas, Seco, Prezzo and Las Iguanas.

THINGS TO DO

King Point Marina is enviably close to the bustling city centre of Plymouth with its huge variety of restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs, and is within walking distance of major attractions like the UK’s largest aquarium, the world-class Theatre Royal and Plymouth Pavilions. Plymouth has a fascinating maritime history and was the base for the fleet that gathered to defeat the Spanish Armada in the 16th Century, as well as the site from which the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World, departing from the Mayflower Steps in 1620. You can visit the Mayflower Steps for free in Sutton Harbour, a short walk from King Point Marina, as well as the adjacent Mayflower Museum. Part of Sutton Harbour is Plymouth’s historic quarter famously known as the Barbican, which features many wellpreserved Tudor properties as well as the Plymouth Gin Distillery, the working home of Plymouth Gin since 1793. Nearby are the Elizabethan Gardens set in a 16th Century merchant street with low box hedges containing beds of colourful flowers and fragrant herbs. It is easy to explore Plymouth on foot but there are regular bus services and an extensive bus network serving the wider area, including Dartmoor, South Devon and South East Cornwall. Cycling is also a great way to see the local area, with the Sustrans National Cycle Network passing through the city. Cycle hire is available from Rockets and Rascals (www. rocketsandrascals.com) in Sutton Harbour where berth holders enjoy discounted rates.

THE team at MDL Marinas recently welcomed back the British Sailing Team’s Paralympians, Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, who returned to their home marina on the Hamble after winning bronze at this year’s Paralympic Games in Rio. After months of training at Hamble Point Marina, the duo ended their Rio 2016 Paralympic sailing regatta on a high, taking the Skud-18 bronze medal on the final day of racing in Guanabara Bay. Clinching the podium position in their class, the duo enjoyed a great start from the port end of the line on the Pão de Açúcar course to lead up the first beat and head round the windward mark, finally crossing the line still in third place. Hamble Point Marina gave free berthing for their Skud-18 racing sailing boats throughout their training in the run up to the games, giving them access to the waters of the Solent. A hub for competitive racing in the Solent, Hamble Point Marina was an ideal location for the team to train with the marina team on hand to lift the boats out of the water and re-launch them whenever required. Commenting on their Olympic success Alexandra, said: ‘It was an exhilarating race.

We started at the Starboard end and were in silver position for most of the course with the Polish team leading. We lost our position on the final leg due to difficult condition but are still delighted to have come back from the games with bronze. We are very grateful for MDL’s support on our road to Rio, the training in the Solent stood us in great stead for the challenges that we faced when sailing in Brazil. To have everyone at MDL Marinas and Hamble Point supporting our dream means the world to Niki and I.” Nick Birrell continued: “To have two Paralympic medals from London 2012 and this year’s Rio games is just surreal. They don’t

come easy and I’d like to thank everyone who has ever helped us in our SKUD programme. Thank you so, so much. We came for gold but we’re super happy with silver because we’ve had to fight so hard in our boat for every metre and every position.” Nic Parton, Marina Manager, said: “We are really proud of Alex and Niki’s success in Rio and it is great to have supported their training and bid for a podium finish at the games! These inspiring and skilled athletes played a big part in the British Paralympic effort in Rio 2016, and it’s been brilliant to host these sailing stars.”

FIRST FEMALE CERTIFIED MARINA PROFESSIONAL THE ICOMIA World Marinas Conference in Amsterdam (17-19 November 2016) provided the ideal backdrop for the presentation of the latest two Global Marina Institute (GMI) certificates. Michelle Hitchcock, Head of Business Development at MDL Marinas Ltd, was awarded the Certified Marina Professional (CMP) certificate. Michelle is the first woman in the world to be accredited as a CMP, since its inception in 2012. Designed to recognise the skills and experience of those working in the marina sector, but not directly managing marinas, Michelle is the perfect candidate to receive this accolade. She has worked at MDL Marinas Ltd since 1999 in a variety of roles but is now Head of Business Development. Working at one of Europe’s leading marina groups, she is responsible for the company’s training development and delivery, the monitoring of customer service and quality and overseeing all operational aspects of business systems throughout the group’s marinas located across the UK, France, Italy and Spain. Upon receiving her certification, Michelle Hitchcock commented: “I am honoured and proud to be awarded my CMP accreditation by the GMI. This is a major highlight of my career, made more special as the presentation was in front of an audience of my peers at the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference.” Can Akaltan was also presented with his Certified Marina Manager (CMM) certificate during the Conference. Can is General Manager at Cesme Marina in Izmir, Turkey. Building on his successful career as a yacht captain, he joined Cesme Marina as the Marina Manager and has since been promoted to the position

of General Manager. Can Akaltan also remarked: “I feel privileged to be awarded the only internationally recognised certificate in the marina industry for marina professionals. It is also a great pleasure to become part of a very special group of industry pioneers.” John Hogan, Chairman of the GMI, added: “It is good to have our first female CMP, particularly as she is from Europe, to add to those marina professionals already certified in Australia and Asia. I am hopeful that Michelle will pave the way for others who work in the industry to look to CMP as a way of developing and recognising their talents. It is also good to see another CMM recognised in Turkey.”

L-R: Michelle Hitchcock, Head of Business Development at MDL Marinas Ltd, John Hogen, Chairman of the GMI, and Can Akaltan, General Manager at Cesme Marina

GETTING INTO A FLAP

A slang expression which arose from the excitement and confusion of preparing a warship for sea at short notice. It dates from World War I in the huge fleet anchorages such as Scapa Flow in Scotland when the order to put to sea was preceded by hurried flag signals (the flapping of flags). An associated expression ‘there is a flap on’ also derives from this. Scapa Flow was known as ‘Flappa Flow’.

RNLI Penlee lifeboat, Soloman Browne, was lost whilst answering a distress call sent out by Union Star in treacherous weather conditions off the Cornish coast. The rescue attempt took place in winds coming from the south east at hurricane force 12, gusting to 90 knots and the sea reaching 60ft high. Posthumous awards of gallantry were made to Soloman Browne’s coxswain, crew and station.

A TASTE OF CHRISTMAS BY PAUL ANTROBUS

A delicious drinks basket for the festive period with some of the best tipples reviewed in All at Sea over the year.

Consultant Chris Satchwell chris@allatsea.co.uk

from grapes rather than grains. The result is silky smooth. It is available in specialist shops or online from www.masterofmalt.com for £29 for a welcome 44 per cent 70cl bottle. Likewise, Conker Gin, a recent discovery and favourably reviewed by All At Sea’s publisher Sue Baggaley, is made from wheat instead of barley. Also available from www.masterofmalt.com, it costs £35.95 per 40 per cent 70cl bottle.

FIZZ

Top of the Pops this year and trending fast is Thomson & Scott’s Skinny Prosecco. It is a quality wine with discernible flavour at 11 per cent abv but crucially only 67 calories per 100ml glass, half the amount of a regular Prosecco. Distribution is expanding and Thomson & Scott now supplies single bottles as well as cases of six on www.thomsonandscott.com. At around £18 a bottle it is not the cheapest but it is the only ‘Skinny’ and likely to be the height of fizzy fashion.

COMPETITION TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Winners will be notified by email/phone. The winners will be the first correct entry drawn at random after the competition closing date. No cash or alternatives will be offered. Please indicate on your entry if you do not wish to receive information about other products and services from All at Sea, by phone, post, email or by SMS. No cash alternative will be offered.

Offley Rosé Port will be a popular addition to the Christmas drinks basket. Typically port is viewed as an afterdinner treat and rosé for the summer only, but Offley says that its Rosé Port is often drunk by the Portuguese as a year-round elegant apéritif on the rocks or as a cocktail with tonic. Expect to pay £12 for a 75cl bottle at 19.5 per cent.

The English is a single malt from the English Whisky Company at Roudham, Norfolk. Go to www. englishwhisky. co.uk and choose The English in its bright new get-up at 43 per cent costing £35 for a 70cl bottle. It is good and will add another dimension versus Scottish malts for the holiday tasting debate. There are some nice stocking fillers on the website too.

Plymouth Gin Original, established in 1793, is still distilled at the original distillery in Plymouth and qualifies as a ‘craft’ gin from before the term was coined. Expect to pay £25 per 70cl bottle at 41.2 per cent. In view of the current surging interest in gins, adding a couple of newer craft gins to the Christmas basket could spark a lively debate, especially when they are made with different ingredients and taste different from the many London dry gin types around. Chilgrove is uniquely distilled

BEERS

Many Christmas or Santa ale specials are just Christmas labels for an otherwise regular ale. My basket includes a couple of regular strong dark ales - for sipping rather than quaffing. Go for Marstons Wychwood Hobgoblin, which is ruby dark and malty at 5.2 per cent. Or the golden dark Shepherd Neame’s Bishops Finger, 5.4 per cent, malty and full bodied, from Britain’s oldest brewery at Faversham, Kent.

WINE

Ideal with Christmas turkey or pudding, Argentinian Malbec red was the number one choice of a small tasting panel earlier in the year.
