November 2020 was incorrect and that it would be unable to apply an easement for returning vessels after the UK left the EU. This gave boat owners just 14 days to rebase their boats to the UK to avoid a second VAT charge. Given the distance, winter weather conditions and Covid travel restrictions, this was not only unrealistic, but for most it was simply impossible.

For more than three years, Regulations and Technical Services Group (RATS), on behalf of the Cruising Association, has been working together with other organisations, including the RYA and British Marine, to engage with and lobby HMRC on a positive outcome. RATS provided HMRC with detailed scenarios and background information.

It will be difficult to overcome the decision, but RATS will continue its engagement with HMRC and will be requesting transparency as to the grounds on which this decision was made and the logic behind it.

Mel Hide,RYA director of external affairs,said of the policy decision: “The proposal has been with the Government since January 2022 following the successful case we made for an easement of the threeyear RGR condition.

The Government has rejected a proposal allowing recreational boat owners, established in the UK, who lawfully purchased and kept their boat in the EU at the time the UK was an EU member, to be eligible for Returned Goods Relief.

Initially, on 25 April 2019, the Government confirmed: “The intended UK policy is that a UK vessel will not lose its status as VAT paid in the UK because it is outside UK territorial waters on EU Exit

Day. When the vessel returns to the UK the person responsible for the vessel can claim Returned Goods Relief.”

On 3 November 2020, the Government reaffirmed: “If a vessel was re-imported during 2021, it would be sufficient to show that any sale or transfer or ownership had been made in compliance with [EU] VAT legislation.”

It was not until 17 December 2020 that HMRC stated that the advice it gave in

“The Cruising Association has been informed that this HMRC decision marks the end of the road for any hope of a positive outcome,” said Derek Lumb, president of the CA.

“The CA is bewildered as to why people who bought boats in Europe and paid VAT on those boats should now be discriminated against in this way. This intransigence by HMRC is deeply disappointing and a further obstacle for the cruising community.”

“It is therefore a deeply disappointing outcome and falls well short of resolving the issue for those who have been caught out by incorrect advice provided by the Government. It would also seem to fall short of the Government commitment to assist UK industry as we forge our future outside of the EU. We must now consider what action we can collectively take to seek a better outcome.”

Lesley Robinson, CEO British Marine, added: “This is obviously very disappointing news in light of the previous commitments from Government to support UK boat owners bringing their vessels back to the UK. We will continue to work with our strategic partners to challenge this decision and press for a change in policy.”

From incredible charity fundraisers to Olympic athletes - the first ever fatherdaughter Olympic gold medal winners, Mike and Eilidh McIntyre, will also take

to the stage to reflect on their Olympic successes and how Mike’s medal hanging outside a young Eilidh’s bedroom inspired her to reach for her own place in sailing history (Saturday only). She is now striving for further glory at Paris 2024, forging a new partnership in the mixed 470 class alongside Martin Wrigley.

Staying with competitive sailors, Hannah Diamond will be joined by Hattie Rogers to share their Great Britain SailGP team experiences and updates on the Athena Pathway Programme, looking ahead to the first ever Women’s America’s Cup in 2024.

Plus, INEOS Britannia’s Matt Gotrel (Saturday only) will give an update on the Challenger of Record’s progress towards the 37th America’s Cup and the coming SailGP season.

Another inspirational athlete, Paralympic gold medallist and RYA National Class Lead Coach Helena Lucas, along with guest coaches, will head up a session for youth and junior dinghy racers on preparing for the season ahead.

motive for that one as, apart from loving Devon, I recently discovered I have a family link going back to the mid 1700s in Devonport, home to the largest naval base in Western Europe. It turns out my third great-grandfather was a blacksmith at the docks. Although his son left the area and moved to London he ended up living on a road called Ship Street! Some things are just destined to be. I wondered what my ancestors would have thought about my, albeit very different, marine related job!

Recognising the outstanding achievement of sailing clubs across the UK, the RYA Awards Panel has selected 12 finalists for 2023. The awards will be presented, and the overall winner announced, during the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show at Farnborough International Exhibition Centre on 25 February.

CAPE HORNERS

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has been appointed president of the International Association of Cape Horners. In addition, French solo sailor Jean-Luc van den Heede is now vice president. Following the successful induction of 28 historic and pioneering names in the first IACH Cape Horn Hall of Fame in September, nominations have opened to select six new inductees in 2023. Sir Robin and JeanLuc head a panel of experts who are looking for those whose achievements in cruising or racing around Cape Horn have become an inspiration to others.

TALL SHIP SCRAPPED

An historic three-masted tall ship, The Earl of Pembroke, has been scrapped. Built in 1945 the ship has been used in films including Treasure Island, Count of MonteCristo and Alice in Wonderland. It also appeared at marine events such as the Southampton Boat Show and Liverpool Maritime Festival. In recent years, however, the ship had been docked in Holland.

RNLI'S HOVERCRAFTS

The RNLI has been celebrating the anniversary of its inshore rescue hovercraft, which has extended the charity’s lifesaving capability around the coast since 2002, aiding more than 1,200 people and saving 78 lives. Designed for search and rescue purposes, the hovercraft can tackle incidents on tidal mudflats or sand where the surface is too soft to support land vehicles and where the water is too shallow for boats.

CLASSICS REGATTA

The Dartmouth Classics Regatta, taking place from 23 - 25 June, consists of two days of racing for classic yachts and dayboats. The event is alternately organised by the Royal Dart Yacht Club and the Classic Channel Regatta Ltd. When run by the RDYC, the Dartmouth Classics is a standalone weekend regatta. When run by the CCR it is part of the Classic Channel Regatta. The Dartmouth Classics are part of the West Country Series, which includes the Falmouth and Fowey Classic Regattas.

CUP MATCH DATES CONFIRMED

Both the intended race area and the race dates for the America’s Cup Match 2024 have been confirmed.

The Racing Area for both the Challenger Selection Series and the America’s Cup Match are to the south of the city along Barcelona’s beachfront, creating the ideal viewing gallery for spectators along the coastline.

A permanent exclusion zone for the duration of the racing has been agreed to ensure the safety of the competitors and the expected daily armada of spectator boats. For those onshore, racing action could, depending on conditions, be just a few hundred metres off the beach at times.

Racing the new AC40 class set up in strict one-design mode, the Women’s America’s Cup Regatta Final is planned immediately after Race 5 on 16 October 2024, giving the women’s event significant coverage and profile.

Racing in the America’s Cup Match itself, which will be a best of 13 (first to

seven), will start on 12 October 2024 with two races scheduled, followed by a further two races on 13 October. Racing will then pause for two days (depending on conditions these days could be used to race) before race 5 on 16 October

followed by, as mentioned, the Women’s America’s Cup Regatta Final.

After another two days with no racing planned (unless needed), two races per day are scheduled for 19 - 20 October 2024, as required. The objective is to have racing

concluded over that weekend, but the schedule does allow for racing to continue into the following week.

Speaking about the announcement, Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s CupEvents Limited, said: “This is a significant event to plan for, with safety concerns at the top of the list for both spectators and competitors. I think the result is going to be something pretty spectacular with racing taking place in front of the beach, along the coast from the main port entrance right along the coast, past the Port Olímpic and out further east, offering a fantastic viewing opportunity for the public to see these remarkable boats at full pace.”

The programme gives owners the freedom to choose when and how often they use their boat as well as complete choice over the type of charters the yacht is used for. The TITAN Yacht Ownership Programme also removes the day-to-day hassles of boat ownership and maintenance. All regular maintenance, berthing, insurance and charter management is included, and any costs incurred are offset against the owner’s 60 per cent share of all charter revenues.

In addition, all new owners are invited to make use of £3,000 worth of TITAN Owners Privilege Points. These can be used to book own boat and private tuition days with an RYA instructor for family and crew members.

The Sunseeker Superhawk 55 has emerged from the build shed in preparation for her global premiere at this month’s boot Düsseldorf 2023.

The investment sees Misland Capital join Ben Ainslie and Chris Bake as owners of the SailGP Great British Team at a valuation of $40m. The split in shares sees Ben Ainslie hold the majority with Chris Bake and Misland Capital holding equal secondary shares. Ben is one of only two athletes in the league to hold ownership out of the nine competing teams.

A spokesperson from Misland Capital said: “Both the Great Britain team and SailGP have been doing brilliant work to grow the sport, take action against climate change and focus on bringing gender equity to the sport by providing training pathways for success.”

In just its third season, SailGP has grown from six teams to nine, and five events to 11 – at iconic locations around the world; with more expansion on both fronts already announced for Season 4.

Ben Ainslie added: “With Season 3 seeing unprecedented growth in the form of an expanded global calendar, increased teams, new owners, commercial partners and history breaking viewing figures – Season 4’s calendar looks on a strong growth trajectory. As SailGP continues to grow, hopefully we will see more teams become privately owned with inward investment.”

The Great Britain SailGP Team returns to action for the inaugural Singapore Sail Grand Prix on 14 - 15 January following a podium finish and an exciting final race for the team in Dubai last November.

NEW PILOT VESSEL

Falmouth Harbour has awarded Holyhead Marine the £1.6M contract to build a clean, safe, fuel-efficient pilot vessel to join a fleet operating 24/7, 365 days a year and completing more than 1,000 boardings and landings per yearwithin the Falmouth Harbour Pilotage Area. The new vessel will replace the LK Mitchell, which was built in 1978 and has been operating as a Falmouth pilot boat ever since.

The speed of 138.21mph achieved by Emirates Team New Zealand and Glenn Ashby in Horonuku on 11 December at Lake Gairdner in South Australia has been officially ratified and confirmed as the new WorldRecordSpeed of a wind powered land yacht by the World Land Sailing Organisation, Federation International de Sand et Land Yachting.

WANT TO RACE AROUND THE WORLD?

In what may be a last chance for sailors to sign up for the 2023 Ocean Globe Race, Don McIntyre, organiser of the event, and Captain Coconut, retired Navy commander Mark Sinclair of GoldenGlobefame, are looking for crew to sail with them.

Don McIntyre is entering his classic 1978 Nautor Swan 57 ketch‘Explorer’ in this gruelling 50thanniversary recreation of the first ever crewedrace, the original1973 Whitbread.Donwill also sail on leg three around Cape Horn, and crew places are open for ordinary sailors to join the team.Mark Sinclair, who retired from the2022 GoldenGlobeRace,will skipper the entry and build the team.

The OGR begins on 10 September for the start of an eight month adventure.

For the first time in nearly 30 years, a fleet of 20 classic and historic yachts - sailed by amateur sailors and legends - will face off against all theoceans of the world in an epic voyage. Racing round all the great capes, including the infamous Cape Horn, stopovers will include Cape Town, Auckland and Punta Del Este in Uruguay.

LeeSan has replaced the original pump out station at Waverney River Centre on the Norfolk Broads. The station is timer controlled to eliminate any dry running and to allow the marina to charge appropriately for each use. The marina is undergoing a significant revamp after being acquired by Tingdene Ltd. Read more marina news on page 32.

TYPHOON ON SHOW

Don McIntyre,OGR founder, said: “We conceived both the Golden Globe and OceanGlobeRaces to inspire people, and it was clear there were a huge number of sailors wanting to be part of history and sail in the OGR. But there are not enough yachts to carry them. For the past year I have been thinking about an OGR entry and just doing the Cape Horn leg, as I have to run the event rather than sail all of it. I could not find the right boat, but then two weeks ago, I finally did. I bought her three days later and asked Captain Coconut if he was up for it. He was in and we are both very excited!”

Don’s yacht, Explorer, has had just two owners since 1978 and is in amazing

condition. Designed by Olin Stephens and first launched in 1977, she is one of the all-time classic S&S designs; she evolved directly from the 1973 WhitbreadRace experience of the winning Swan 65 Sayula. There will, however, be a final refit to prepare her for the rigours of the voyage before Captain Coconut takes over to train and shape the crew of nine.

Mark Sinclair, Captain Coconut, said: “Skippering a Swan 57 in the SouthernOceanis a dream come true and the OGR will provide another incredible

opportunity to relive history, and maybe even create some more. We follow the same route as the original Clipper ships and navigate in the same way as those great mariners, using sextant, chronometer, astronomical tables, a pencil and paper charts.

“We will be back to basics, using the sun, moon, planets and stars, without GPS and modern electronics and only HF radios for communication. Being immersed in the OGR will be a true challenge of seamanship skills for all onboard.”

Crew can sign on for one of the four legs or the entire circumnavigation, and the opportunity is open to any sailor “really wanting it”. All crew share the costs involved with this OGR entry and will undergo onboard training leading up to the start.

The announcement follows formal Government designation of the tax sites within theSolentFreeport, where investment is underway.Tax sites offer occupiers business rates relief and other incentives to support capital investment, skills and employment. Business rates growth generated at the tax sites can be retained locally and reinvested in the area.It is expected that theSolentFreeport will attract £1.35 billion private sector investment.

DOUBLE PREMIERE

Contest Yachts will be back at this month’s Düsseldorf Boat Show, 21 - 29 January, with the joint world-premiere of two new yachts, the aft cockpit Contest 49CS (pictured) and centre cockpit Contest 50CS.

Two fifty-footers, the 49CS is the first twin aft cabin Contest at this length, and both the 49CS and 50CS are Contest’s first yachts with the option of all-electric propulsion, engineered with a new Torqeedo and BMW based system.

Magonis, Spanish boat builder of pure electric boats, will debut the Wave e-550 at Boot 2023 with a number of sustainable innovations.

As well as exhibiting the Wave e-550 powered by a 30kW MAG Power electric propulsion system, Magonis will demonstrate the MAGBuoy and a special solar awning at the show.

INVICTUS TT420’S WORLD DEBUT

The new model that completes one of Invictus Yacht’s most successful ranges is the TT420, and it is preparing to make its world début at the upcoming Boot 2023 in Düsseldorf. The first unit of the

new TT420, presented in Düsseldorf, will be in the shipyard’s identifying colour, ‘Personal White’, but the TT420, like its older sister TT460, will later be available in the new special colour, Vogue White.

The Magonis Wave e-550, in its 5.5m, has all the comforts for an enjoyable day cruise. The bowrider layout offers a bow area that can be transformed from a cosy dinette into a usable sundeck, while in the cockpit there are comfortable seats and a protective windscreen.

Magonis has also developed the

first charging buoy, the MAGBuoy. It is equipped with a built-in battery and receives energy from an underwater cable that connects the buoy to the electrical grid. To charge, users simply pull their boat up to the buoy and plug the charging cable into their boat.

Magonis has also developed a solar awning for its Wave e-550, which can charge with up to 1kWh, literally anywhere. Magonis’ solar awning is foldable and flexible; it not only provides shade, but also charges the boat while taking a relaxed break on water. And since the boat (if going at a speed of 4 knots) consumes 1kWh, it can truly be self-sufficient thanks to the solar awning.

Beneteau has launched two new Torqeedo-powered electric boats, the Oceanis 30.1 (right) and the First 44 (bottom left), which has a Torqeedo emission-free Cruise pod drive system.

The partnership between the companies is already a success for two other Groupe Beneteau brands, Excess and Delphia, with the delivery of a hybrid-electric test platform for the Excess 15, powered by Torqeedo’s Deep Blue saildrive, and two 100 per cent electric models from the Delphia brand: the Delphia 10 and the Delphia 11.

The fourth model in the range, the Buster S2 is a multipurpose aluminium boat designed for four people, equipped with double consoles and a solid door in the middle offering ample protection and space. Standard equipment on the Buster S2 includes side and aft rails, an

automatic bilge pump and power outlet. Other optional accessories, in addition to the aft canvas top, include a cushion set, bow rail, bow engine bracket and a bow casting deck with fishing seat. The bow of the boat can also be equipped with a seat-stowage box.

“The new version has been requested especially by boaters who use their Buster S for slightly longer distances. The double console and solid door improve

comfort and protect the aft seat from rain and splashes, making longer trips even more pleasant,” said Johan Finnberg, marketing manager. With the hull weighing just 275kg, the total weight of the Buster S2 with engine and propeller is 373kg. This low weight makes the boat easy to trailer and handle on the shore. The boat is reportedly “easy to handle and quick to get up to speed thanks to its Yamaha engine.”

Also on show at boot Düsseldorf will be the Oyster 595.

The 60ft bluewater sailing yacht has already proven to be popular prelaunch with 16 sold off plan. The 595 offers customised options on interior layout and great entertaining spaces both below and on deck. World Sailing and four of the leadingOlympicclass regattas have confirmed competition dates for 2023 and 2024 and announced a commitment for greater collaboration across the sport with the ambition of delivering benefits for event organisers on all continents, for national federations and for individual sailors. As a result, theTrofeo Princesa Sofia,Allianz Regatta,Semaine Olympique FrançaiseandKieler Woche will work with World Sailing on three key areas:

BOAT LICENCE FEES ON THE UP

The Canal & River Trust has announced a nine per cent increase in boat licence fees from 1 April 2023 for both private boat owners and boating businesses.

When combined with the interim increase introduced from 1 October 2022, this will mean an overall year-on-year increase of 13 per cent for those renewing an annual boat licence in the period from 1 April until 30 September 2023.

The charity explained that, charged with the long-term care of 2,000 miles of waterways, comprising 10,000 individual assets and structures, many of

which are up to 250-years-old,it is facing significant increases in a range ofcosts, which are rising by more than the headline consumer price index leading to a projected shortfall inits finances in 2023 and beyond.

Additionally, the Government grant payment, which goes towards the cost of maintaining the waterways, is frozen this year (and hence declining in real terms) and until 2027, with no certainty of what grant will be made available from 2027.

Richard Parry, chief executive, said: “We recognise that our boating

customers - both private boaters and waterway businesses - will also be feeling the effect of inflation across their personal finances, but we hope there is an understanding that this is an essential step to ensure the ongoing maintenance and repair of the historic canals and river navigations in our care.”

Boat licences account for around an eighth of the Trust’s annual income. The CRT is proposing to carry out a consultation in 2023 to gather feedback on how boat licence pricing might look over the next 10 years to support the long-term future of the waterway network.

GOLDEN GLOBE RACE LATEST…

After more than 100 days at sea, only six of the original 16 entrants in the Golden Globe Race are likely to pass through the Hobart gate, which shuts on 31 January to guarantee the best possible weather through Cape Horn, 4,500nm away. After that date, any Suhaili Classentrant showing up late will have to stop and make the second stage of their trip in December 2023 in theVoyager Class.Chichester Classentrants arriving late at the Hobart Gate will be retired.

TheGGRis once again taking its toll. Three boats retired before crossing the equator, another three on arrival at Cape Town and two more east of the Cape of Good Hope. The latest retiree, Arnaud Gaist (FRA), had been plagued by rigging issues and then also with barnacles, and so in early December, 200 miles out of Saint Helena, he officially notified GGR control of his retirement from the race.

Unfortunately Guy Waites (GBR) had a barnacle invasion on his Tradewind 35,

and so when he arrived in Cape Town he cleaned Sagarmatha’s hull and applied two coats of antifouling. Due to this stop he was continuing in theChichester Class.

However, Guy cannot now make the Hobart Gate in time, and although he is determined to continue his solo circumnavigation he will be retired from the GGR once the Hobart gate closes.

American Elliott Smith (pictured), meanwhile, could not complete mast repairs due to sea conditions, and he will beChichester Classon arrival in Australia this month. He then has no time to pass the Hobart Gate and so would be out of theGGR.“I think I am gonna have to call it a day,”Elliott said.

The six likely to pass through the Hobart gate are: Ian Herbert-Jones (GBR), Jeremy Bagshaw (ZAF), Michael Guggenberger (AUT), Kirsten Neuschäfer (ZAF), Abhilash Tomy (IND) and Simon Curwen (GBR).

The leading trio has now sailed over 50 per cent of the course. Simon Curwen (top right) has been the unchallenged leader since the early days of the race, but by mid-December was losing mile after mile while parked in a massive high that caught-up with him. He used most of his time in the calms to go through his to-do list planned for Hobart, including servicing his hydrovane fittings.

However, despite Simon's position on the water, Kirsten Neuschäfer has a time compensation of 35 hours for the rescue of Tapio Lehtinen (FIN) in November after his boat sank.

This compensation actually put Kirsten's yacht Minnehaha in the lead by 5.5 hours at the Hobart Gate!

Back on land Tapio has arrived home in Finland. He was dropped off by the M.V. Darya Gayatri in Jakarta in early December, 19 days after his rescue in the Southern Indian Ocean.

NEW EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

The inaugural IRC Two-Handed European Championship will take place from 2 - 9 July with the winner decided by the combined results from two races.

Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in association with l’UNCL Pôle Course du YCF and La Société Nautique de laTrinitésur mer, the first race, La Trinité – Cowes (350nm), will start on 2 July followed by CowesDinard - St Malo (150nm) on 7 July.

RORC PRO Steve Cole said: “The IRC rating band has been chosen to include similar boats racing in IRC Two-Handed. The attraction of the Rolex Fastnet Race, starting on 22 July, means we are expecting a big fleet.”

French skipper Géry Trentesaux is one of the driving forces behind the new championship. After the merger

of UNCL and the Yacht Club de France in September, Géry is the YCF vice president and racing president.

Géry said: “With so many teams now racing IRC Two-Handed in France and the UK, it seems very natural to have a European Championship. La Trinité – Cowes is a 350-mile race connecting two famous offshore racing ports. The 150-mile CowesDinard - St Malo race dates back over a century.

"Personally, I love the race and the finish in St Malo. I have won four times, as many as former British Prime Minster Edward Heath!”

INDUSTRY’S FIRST V10

Mercury Marine has introduced the industry’s first V10 outboard with the official launch of its 5.7L 350 and 400hp Verado® outboard engines.

“The all-new Mercury V10 Verado outboards are exactly what boaters have been asking for in a 350 and 400hp platform,” said Chris Drees, Mercury Marine president. “They are powerful, smooth and quiet. They have many of the same fuel efficiency-enhancing features that are synonymous with our high horsepower line-up.

“They also deliver the same kind of premium boating experience that has made Verado outboards legendary. The V10 Verado outboards solidify Mercury’s leadership position in the high-horsepower outboard market.”

Tim Reid, Mercury Marine vice president of product development and engineering, added: “We challenged our engineers to improve acceleration and overall performance with the new V10 Verado outboards, while also making them quieter and lighter than competitors’ outboards in this horsepower range. Once again they exceeded expectations while also incorporating technologies that make boat operation and maintenance intuitively simple.”

The V10 Verado engines will be compatible with a new Mercury electric steering system for multi-outboard vessels slated to start shipping in February 2023. The new system will reportedly offer enhanced steering responsiveness, dramatically simplified rigging and a more than 50 per cent reduction in energy consumption.

The development of these V10 outboards is a product of Mercury’s continued commitment to invest heavily in R&D and production capacity to keep up with customer demand. To that end, the company has invested $2B since 2008, and its manufacturing footprint has expanded to more than 275k m ²

GREENER FUEL CHOICES

Cox Marine’s World Record* shines a spotlight on HVO as a more environmentally responsible marine fuel.

The COX Marine team, and its vessel Pegasus, hit the news when they clinched a World Record title for the world’s fastest diesel outboard.

The team achieved a final average speed of 62.84mph, measured across the kilometre-long flying start course on Cumbria’s Coniston Water.

Published data from COX Marine’s Project Pegasus revealed that running the boat on HVO fuel offers a net CO2 saving over a comparable petrol outboard of 94 per cent.

James Eatwell, COX Marine’s head of R&D, said: “Of course the whole team are justifiably delighted with 62.84mph from a totally standard CXO300 pulled straight of the production line, but the real message is what the achievement says about HVO, other ‘future fuels’ and the clear benefits they can bring.

“We ran the engine on both HVO and diesel during the week, and it is important to state that in terms of the engine’s vital statistics, including oil and water temperatures, vibration, and of course RPM and top speeds achieved, the data showed comparable results between the HVO and marine diesel.

“In emissions testing prior to Coniston we actually saw a 40 per cent reduction in

One year on from making its global debut, Propel is close to completing the testing and development of its S1 electric outboard motor.

The Propel S1 will join the D1 inboard electric motor, which has been on sale since last summer, as well as its new B1 modular ‘suitcase’ battery solution. There is an important point to make about HVO; it is a true ‘drop in replacement’ for conventional diesel. Tanks and fuel lines need not be cleaned when changing between the two fuels, and the CXO300’s ECUs will automatically reset and optimise the engine for the fuel in use, whether HVO or diesel, just as they do for the slightly different grades of diesel available around the world.

Explaining the CO2 emissions James said: “Because HVO is synthesised from renewable waste materials, such as used cooking oil, nonfood grade crop-based vegetable oil fractions and residue fat fractions, it has taken CO2 out of the environment for its production. Burning it in an engine then puts this previously removed CO2 back into the environment.

“Fossil fuel derived diesel, by comparison, in effect takes CO2 that was locked away as oil in the earth’s crust, which when combusted in an engine, releases this ‘new’ or additional CO2 into the atmosphere.”

The European market for leisure marine outboard motors sees 200,000 sales per year and is worth US$900m. The rate of transition to electric motors is set to accelerate significantly in the coming few years as major cities plan to introduce new inland marine emissions legislation. For example, Amsterdam has decreed all vessels must be electric by 2025. As a result, it is forecast that 74 per cent of outboard motor sales in Europe will be electric by 2030.

“Leisure boat owners and operators will soon have no option but to switch to electric motors as cities implement new rules to clean up their waterways,” said Sander van Dijk, managing director and CTO of Propel.

Propel will begin series production of the S1 in early 2023.

At this month’s Boot Düsseldorf the first electric model by Capoforte will be on display. The SQ240iwill be at the show featuring a Molabo ISCAD V50inboard motor, and it is also available with a Yamaha HARMO electric outboard motor. With its 7.38m length and 2.46m width, the Capoforte SQ240i can carry up to 10 people.

DOUGAL WHAT LIES BENEATH

There is a further interesting distinction that many of the wrecks from WW2 would have been oil powered and, although the very act of being attacked and sunk might have breached some of the tanks, the worry is that there are huge quantities of oil still trapped on the seabed that could be released at any time.

In contrast, the WW1 wrecks, most of which were coal fired, are also able to create an equally worrying situation, as not only have they been sunk for longer, but surprisingly coal can produce some unpleasant biproducts after 100 years or more below the waves.

Thankfully there is some brighter news coming from the research carried on the John Mahn, as many of the identified organisms have shown a resilience to the presence of pollutants, with the wreck acting as a home to a wide range of aquatic species, but at the same time this is a fairly small wreck in an area of strong tides that are helping to maintain the environmental balance.

UNKNOWN HAZARDS

wartime debris, with some of these close enough to the shore to add new levels of concern. Just how ‘real’ this problem might be was seen in 2017, when more than 150 people needed medical treatment at Birling Gap, on the Sussex coast, after a chemical haze drifted in from the sea.

The source of this was never identified, but in its report Defra identified the likely sources as either a ship out in the channel (which could have been identified using AIS) or a release from a wreck on the seabed.

GROWING PROBLEM

The issue that faces the UK and other coastal nations is only getting bigger with each passing year, with it already being a huge undertaking to dive down and explore even those wrecks identified as a priority. As with the Richard Montgomery, the wrecked ammunition ship resting on a sandbank in the Thames, the mere act of checking the condition of a wartime ship is not only expensive, but a highly risky activity.

After a summer in which we saw little to no rain, it then became a case of rain, rain and yet more rain. Some areas in the South East had 60 per cent of their November rainfall in just 12 hours, and so the news ‘leaks’ of multiple and prolonged sewage laden overflows affecting beaches all around our coasts was hardly a surprise.

However, before we join in the growing clamour that something has to be done about the water companies, there are other, longer term pollution sources that are an increasing worry for those who enjoy the time they spend afloat.

For one group of All at Sea readers, there is a report that has the potential to be of real concern, as it impacts those who go afloat just about every day of the year to enjoy ‘sport’ fishing. It has long been appreciated by the many fisherman who head out, often way offshore, that the numerous wrecks on the seabed around our coasts are a great target area, but some worrying concerns identified in an EU funded survey (headed up by the Centre for Microbial Ecology at the University of Ghent) suggest that all is not well beneath the waves.

GERMAN TRAWLER

The subject of their survey was the John Mahn, V-1302, a German trawler sunk by the RAF just off the Belgian coast some 80 years ago. Previously wrecks had not been a problem, as wooden hulls and spars with their cotton sails would degrade naturally, but iron and then steel hulls are another matter altogether. In time the metal starts to flake away, and as the structure of the hull deteriorates, any cargo or contents that had been carried on board will get exposed to the actions of the sea.

focused on the microbiome that surrounds the wreck, testing for traces of heavy metals and other toxic pollutants such as arsenic and pyrene.

The latter is of concern as this is a ‘PAH’, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, a chemical that is known to have a detrimental impact on the microbial ecology. Further testing on the silt around the hull revealed a cocktail of various biproducts arising from the breakdown of the hull, with many of these having the potential to enter the food chain, which could then affect fish that are caught in these locations.

WAR WRECKS

Whilst there is a wide range of wrecks around our coasts, there is little doubt that the remains of the hundreds of warships on the seabed add a further level of complication as the casings around the ammunition still onboard corrode away. Once the sea water is able to attack the propellents and warheads the explosives used, often TNT, can get released into the water column, which can have a particularly toxic effect on marine wildlife.

Indeed, the John Mahn is, in military wreck terms, little more than a starting point, albeit an interesting one. Moving up the scale, there are more wrecks that are larger and come with a far greater risk of creating a long-term pollution hazard.

The North Sea alone is the known final resting place for literally thousands of wrecks, not only of boats but also of aircraft, with many of these posing significant long-term issues.

If on-site research indicated that there was still oil in a wreck, it might be possible to extract it and bring it to the surface for safe disposal, but recovering 80-year-old munitions would be a very tricky task indeed.

Then there is the issue that so many of the wartime wrecks have War Grave status and thus cannot be disturbed, so this is clearly a problem that cannot be easily addressed. But addressed it must be, for as the demand for offshore wind farms takes up more and more of the sea bed, the risk of a wreck being compromised, either by accident or design, will only grow.

comfortable anchoring out or who like a bit of land beneath their feet in the evenings. There are some marinas, like Piskera, which are purpose built to allow sailors to get as remote as possible, and almost all of them are now bookable online, which means you will not have to rush or stress about finding a berth.

Neighbouring Montenegro also offers not-too-strong wind conditions, even more so in the Kotor Bay area, where you are sailing between mountains. The country is something of a millionaire’s playground, with superyachts and big, fancy brandnew marinas.

Wherever you are reading this, the odds are that it is cold, grey and miserable outside, which makes it the perfect time to start planning a holiday. Ideally somewhere sunny and warm and, naturally, involving some sailing.

We are truly blessed to live just a short plane, or even train, journey from the Mediterranean Sea - the biggest, best and most diverse sailing ground on the planet. However, if you are not sure exactly where to go for your ideal sailing holiday, here are a few ideas from charter experts PlainSailing. com, based on how proficient you are in the cockpit…

BEGINNERS

The Mediterranean is ideal for beginners –the waters are non-tidal (so you do not need to panic about racing into port or trying to understand tide-tables) and the whole area is also generally well sheltered from the elements, so you can rest easy that you are not going to come across giant, metres-high waves. There are, however, some bits of the Med that are even more sheltered than the rest – making them the ideal places for beginners to learn the ropes or hone their skills.

And beginners will be glad to know that they do not lose out on any of the Med sailing experience by heading somewhere with lighter winds or less swell - some of the most iconic and beautiful places in the Med fall within this bracket.

This includes the North and South Ionian islands in Greece, which is the most popular

area to sail in the Med, and offers turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, colourful fishing villages, simple line-of-sight navigation and plenty of things to see and do. If flights to Corfu or Lefkas do not work out, then the Saronic gulf is just as suitable for beginners, and you can get there by flying into Athens.

Further north (which makes it slightly cooler temperature-wise, particularly in August), the whole of the epic coastline of Croatia is positioned in the sheltered Adriatic part of the Mediterranean. There are hundreds of islands to hop around, and you can visit the medieval towns of Dubrovnik, Korcula or Trogir; find a sandy beach or sail around one of their protected marine nature reserves.

Sail-tourism has only been around in Croatia for 20 or so years, so they have a very well-planned network of modern marinas, which is great for those who are not

Outside of Greece and the Adriatic, beginners can also relax and enjoy life on board in Malta or the Balearic islands (Mallorca and Ibiza). There are plenty of places to visit to keep you busy for the week, but they are smaller cruising grounds, so sailing distances can be shorter and you will find yourself making simple and confidencebuilding hops up and down the coast.

If you are happy with short distances in idyllic islands, the other place to consider is Sardinia where you can explore the exclusive Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena islands very comfortably, and sample the high life on your own yacht. You can moor up in Porto Cervo and pick up, say, a new Gucci bag.

INTERMEDIATE

Most of the Med opens up for sailors who have a few years of experience on board, and particularly people who are comfortable on the anchor, reefing up and sailing in slightly stronger or direction-changing winds (in

general, this includes most British sailors, who are well known for being hardy in the face of the elements).

In Greece, this encompasses the Sporades islands or Cyclades islands – both offer excellent sailing conditions and you should be able to get a fair rate of knots as you hop between the islands. The time you are willing to commit to standing at the helm alone dictates how remote you can sail here, and the Cyclades would make an outstanding two or three-week break.

In Italy, head to Salerno, where you can get the best view of the famous Amalfi coast as you sail along it, visiting iconic touristmagnets like Sorrento, Amalfi and Capri, and anchoring out at colourful Corricella. Or sail from Sicily for volcanoes, Tuscany for Elba (the best island in the Med?) or Sardinia also becomes intermediate if you sail across the potent Bonifacio strait to Corsica (and the trip to the hill-top castle-town of Bonifacio is almost certainly worth it).

Intermediate sailors should also consider the French Riviera (imagine arriving on your own yacht or catamaran in St Tropez, Nice or Monte Carlo…!), or sailing up and down the turquoise coast in Turkey where you will find restaurants and jetties hidden in remote bays and floating supermarket boats, which mean you do not even need to head to the mainland to get provisions.

Whilst the sailing conditions might be similar, every area of the Med proudly has their own identity and culture, so you will find that the local food, drink and experiences on land will be quite different – it really is a cruising ground which could occupy you for decades, without you ever running out of new places to visit.

EXPERT

Thankfully, with the Med being as sheltered as it is, you do not need to be an expert to sail in it – and when it comes to charter boats, they simply do not exist in places where sailing is not first and foremost enjoyable.

Most experts will be happy anywhere in the Med, and will enjoy feeling relaxed, prepared and under control whilst they bask in the sunshine - which are possibly the best conditions for sailing.

Sailors in search of more exhilarating sailing will find the winds at their strongest in the Dodecanese islands (Rhodes and Kos) in Greece, where you can heel over at speed as well as taking in all the usual charms of Greek island sailing.

Alternatively, ‘experts’ can spend an extra hour or so on the plane and sail in the Canary islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote), where they will find tidal sailing in the Atlantic a little more of a challenge.

THE TRUTH ABOUT BOATING HOLIDAYS…

Yachting holidays are too expensive.

Caroline: The cost of having your own private yacht charter with a skipper may not be as expensive as you first imagine. One week with a skipper can cost about the same as a week in a four to five star hotel for a family of four!

It is always cheaper to book a last minute holiday.

Caroline: Booking last minute does not always guarantee better prices. It can be a good idea if you want to be more spontaneous, but you cannot be too picky!

Booking last minute will mean that your travel plans will need to be pretty flexible, as your choice of yacht, destination, flight dates, boarding type and plane seats will be limited. You can often find great deals by booking your holiday far in advance, with more availability to choose from.

Caroline: If you cannot sail or do not have the required qualifications, then you can either hire a skipper, take a sailing school course at home or abroad to earn an accredited Royal Yachting Association qualification or combine the best of both worlds with a specialist flotilla starter course with Sunsail.

Children are not welcome on a chartered yacht and would not enjoy it anyway.

Caroline: Children will always have something to do, see or explore on yacht charter. Flotillas are ideal for families and specialist routes even have dedicated activity coordinators, who plans games and activities, from treasure hunts to water activities, for the smallest of sailors. Charter companies take care of the sailing holiday essentials and cover everything from child safety nets to lifejackets, as well as ensuring you have the right yacht.

Charting a yacht abroad involves lots of paperwork

Caroline: Before you start planning your holiday, if you are not booking a skipper, it is best to doublecheck the experience level and qualifications needed before your holiday, as it varies in each country. When you book with a charter company like Sunsail and The Moorings there is minimal paperwork to complete, and is about the same as if a customer were to book a hotel or villa. We have implemented a simple online booking portal for our charter companies, and the link can be shared with all crew so they can enter their details, making it even easier for the lead crew member.

Caroline: It is a common myth that all the boats sail together like a row of ducklings, but the reality is a flotilla gives each yacht the freedom to be as independent or as sociable as they like. You will be guided by a lead crew including a skipper, host and technician who are on hand to make sure you have a fantastic holiday, from daily briefings and organising social events to ironing out any niggles along the way.

There are too many ‘extra’ costs like moorings, food and so on…

Caroline: We would aways recommend double checking any extras so that you are clear about what is included in your charter and have no surprises whilst you are away. Fuel, food and mooring costs are not usually included as standard as these rates can fluctuate so greatly. There are options to go all-inclusive too, such as a crewed charter with The Moorings, which includes an expert captain and personal gourmet chef, inclusive of all meals and beverages, fuel and much more.

UK SAILING ADVENTURES

We Brits are very lucky to live on an island, and it is no wonder we have always been a seafaring nation, as our encompassing coastline snakes around Great Britain and each individual British Isle. But in an age of international travel, where we can easily escape to the warmer climes of the Mediterranean or Caribbean, it is easy to ignore the beauty on our own doorstep. Below are four of James’ favourite places to sail without leaving the UK.

WEST COAST OF SCOTLAND

From Largs, conveniently accessible via Glasgow International, you can meander around the stunning Kyles of Bute before stopping at Portavadie, a superb marina which features an infinity pool overlooking Loch Fyne. You can then set off early to get to the entrance of the Crinan canal ideally before 10am.

Getting through the canal’s 15 locks is an engaging process (you can opt to have Scottish Canals staff assist) and you will drift past lovely countryside before exiting into the sea at Crinan (where you may be greeted by a pod of dolphins).

Then you can begin your island hopping down the Hebrides of Jura and onto Islay, where you will find several of Scotland’s most famous distilleries. Go easy on the local produce, as the Mull of Kintyre on your return leg is famed for putting even seasoned sailors to the test!

THE SOLENT

The Solent is often referred to as the home of British yachting, and is a magnificent playground for sailors who love the technicalities and challenges of sailing in strong tidal water. It offers incredible sailing conditions with a prevailing south-westerly allowing you to tack and gybe your way from Notley to the Needles and back.

With tricky transits and strong currents, the Solent holistically tests your ability to navigate into some of the most quaint and charming anchorages on the South Coast, such as the sumptuous Newtown Creek on the Isle of Wight, or bucolic Beaulieu, nestled in the New Forest.

The West Coast of Scotland provides beautiful cruising grounds and abounds with incredible wildlife including whales and seabirds. It is no wonder that sailors return to cruise this area time and again.

Two marvellous options for chartering in Scotland can be boiled down to the Firth of Clyde and further north from Oban and Dunstaffnage. The former has the best options in terms of charter yachts and provides access to a fantastic innerHebridean itinerary, wonderful whisky and world class scenery.

SOUTH WEST

Charter a yacht on the River Fal, head out through Carrick Roads and relish the very best of the South West coastline, once home to naval officers, fishermen and nefarious smugglers alike.

Falmouth’s nautical history makes it the perfect place to explore on or off the water, and it plays host to the impressive national maritime museum.

The Helford River area also boasts golden sandy beaches, sub-tropical gardens and heritage sites such as Pendennis Castle.

Anchor off the gorgeous Roseland peninsula, take the dinghy ashore and stroll through St Just in Roseland, or hike over to classically Cornish St Mawes. There are many beautiful beaches, great for swimming, sunbathing, rock pooling and watersports.

Sail around the Lizard, mainland Britain’s most southerly point, and on to Mount’s Bay and Penzance. From here you can make a pasage across to the magical Isles of Scilly, a cluster of beachfringed jewels with their own warm microclimate and unique diversity of species.

After snaking your way through the mouth of Newtown River into the heart of the National Trust Nature Reserve, all you need do is drop anchor, pop your anchor light on and open a bottle of wine while taking in the stunning sunset with your evening meal and listening to the array of wildlife.

So varied are the conditions that there is a popular saying that if you can sail in the Solent, you can sail anywhere in the world, and it is certainly a good proving ground – many of the UK’s top ocean sailors cut their teeth on the Solent, and it is home to world-famous races and regattas such as the Round the Island Race and Cowes Week.

Charters from the Solent are also a great way to get some more miles under your belt, heading out across to the Channel Islands and Brittany.

LONDON & SOUTH EAST

Start

Explore the picturesque market town of Faversham, the tranquil Oare Marches, the Isle of Sheppey and the River Medway’s twisting nature reserves, or go north towards Burnham-on-Crouch and the River Blackwater. Boats are available for day trips in and around London, too.

MARINA FOCUS PENTON HOOK MARINA

Penton Hook is one of three picturesque MDL Marinas on the tranquil waters of the non-tidal reaches of the River Thames.

The first to be acquired, Penton Hook Marina was the marina that founded the MDL Marina Group in 1973 – 50 years ago this year. Starting life as a gravel and sand pit, planning permission was granted in 1959 for 200 pontoon moorings, plus toilet and car park facilities, altering the landscape and paving the way for the riverside haven that is Penton Hook today. The first berth holder

arrived on 1 April 1960 and the marina has continued to grow ever since.

Set in 80 acres on one of the loveliest stretches of the Thames, close to the vibrant town of Staines-on-Thames and about a mile downstream from Runnymede where King John signed the Magna Carta, Penton Hook is now Britain’s largest inland marina with 575 berths.

FACILITIES & BERTHING

Accommodating vessels up to 30m, Penton Hook has a number of purposebuilt pontoons for narrowboats and Dutch barges. There are four first-class facilities buildings, which include a laundry, showers, toilets and full disabled amenities. Two pump out stations and a fuel berth, selling both petrol and diesel, are also located at the marina.

On-site boatyard services are delivered by Penton Craning, who carry out lifting, towing, antifouling, valeting and pressure washing, while a private yacht club organises a full programme of activities.

In addition, there are two slipways, a boat sales brokerage, engineering and repair services and Tesla electric vehicle charging.

ACCESS

BY ROAD: From the M25, exit at Junction 11 and take the route signposted A320 Woking at the end of the dual carriageway. Turn right at the roundabout, which is signposted A320 Chertsey and Staines. This will take you through Chertsey and onto a dual carriageway with the Twynersh pub on your left. Continue on the dual carriageway and you will go over the M3. This brings you up to another roundabout (Thorpe Park is on the left). At this roundabout turn right up Mixnams Lane and at the end take the

left-hand fork,which willtake you into Penton Hook Marina.

BY RAIL: On a main line from Waterloo toReading,Staines isthe most convenientstation and a shorttaxi ride to themarina.

BY BOAT: Penton Hook Marina is two miles upriver from Chertsey Bridge and lock. Just before Penton Hook lockturn left into atighttear-drop bend around Penton Hook Island. Major investment at Largs

Largs Yacht Haven, on the Firth of Clyde, has taken delivery of a new 75 ton WISE boat hoist which will replace the ageing 45 ton hoist that has been at the site for over 30 years.

The new hoist will work alongside the existing 70 ton hoist allowing flexible lifting in their boatyard, which operates seven days a week.

“With our brand new hoist comes brand new technology,” said marina manager Dave Hewitt. “It will allow

our boatyard operators to move around the hoist while manoeuvring rather than operating from a fixed location on the machine.

The delivery comes off the back of similar investments across Yacht Havens Group. Lymington Yacht Haven has also taken delivery of a new 60 ton hoist, while Yacht Haven Quay Plymouth have purchased a new Wiggins Marina Bull Dry Stack forklift. www.yachthavens.com

Cowes’ new Harbour Master, Captain Shane Wood, will take up his post in the spring. Captain Wood’s key focus will be managing a safe harbour, but he will also work alongside the CHC board and Senior Leadership Team to help deliver the five-year strategic plan.

Grand Banks Yachts, a Malaysian boatbuilder, is buying a Florida marina for US$1.9m. The proposed acquisition will allow the group to enlarge its footprint in the US, enhance service capabilities and generate new revenue streams.

Berthing at boatfolk’s Gosport based Haslar Marina is being given a boost with the installation of a 70m wave attenuating breakwater in an exposed area of the marina. As part of this two-phase project, Inland and Coastal Marina Systems has manufactured a bespoke floating concrete breakwater to reduce the wave climate close to the entrance of Portsmouth Harbour. Phase two is expected to start shortly, adding two 15m x 4m floating concrete units to the breakwater – completing the wave attenuation programme.

One of the consequences of Brexit is that the UK has had to recreate its product safety laws, as formerly encompassed by CE (Conformité Européenne) marking. This has implications for importing second hand vessels.

Good news; the Government has confirmed that any changes have been deferred to the end of 2024. This gives an additional two years for the implications to be fully understood and any appropriate actions taken.

The Cruising Association’s Regulations and Technical Services group (RATS) are studying the new statutory guidance that has been released and continue to liaise with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the department responsible.

Under the forthcoming changes, owners who repatriate a boat to the UK will be faced with the need to demonstrate how they satisfy, or are exempt from, the UKCA legislation. Most will be able to point at past history to get over this and selfcertify. But, rather like with VAT, there are some awkward examples of boats which get caught.

CE marking for yachts is covered by the UK Recreational Craft Regulations 2017, implementing the 2013 EU Recreational Craft Directive. For new products a new regime, the UKCA mark, is to come into force but is now delayed until 1 January

2025. This will apply to all new yachts, though for the time being the underlying requirements will be identical to the CE mark that it replaces.

Unfortunately, certification against these standards is required on “first putting into use in a territory”, and the UK is now a separate territory from the EU. Thus, boats first brought into this country after 31 December 2024 may also need to demonstrate how they satisfy, or are exempt from, the standards.

It is understood that many categories of yacht will qualify automatically, though the guidelines are still far from clear. RATS are working with RYA and others to try to get clarification. CA members can read the new guidance online.

In the drink

are plenty of alternatives; here’s a recipe for one 330ml small tumbler-type glass.

Start with 150ml hot black coffee, then add 5ml shots of brandy, Grand Marnier liqueur and Kahlua liqueur and one teaspoon of sugar (brown if you have it). Top up with coffee so the glass is 90 per cent full and stir vigorously.

Also the Wychwood Brewery, best known for Hobgoblin, offers King Goblin, a strong 6.6 per cent dark ruby beer featuring added chocolate malts and roasted malt to create the warming flavour. Both £1.65 for a 500ml bottle at Sainsbury’s.

Or, from Belgium, Leffe Winter Beer, fruity and spicy and 6.6 per cent strong, £3.30 for a 33ml bottle.

Now for the tricky bit… when stirring has subsided, float a generous portion of whipped cream fresh from the fridge on the top so it looks like a dark stout. The strength is about 13 per cent, roughly the same as red wine. Do not stir the cream in; drink the warm brew through the coldness of the cream. If you want it weaker, increase the coffee.

Even though we have passed the shortest day, 21 December, it is also the official start of the astronomical winter which ends on 20 March, so we still have a few bleak months ahead. Some see January as an opportunity for a ‘dry’ month. Others think that total abstinence makes the winter even bleaker. Perhaps a reduction or break from your usual drinks menu could be a compromise.

But if you are looking for some winter comfort, January is arguably the best

time to enjoy the seasonal ales that many brewers produce.

WINTER ALES

Winter ale is a widespread brewing tradition. The custom of brewing a stronger-than-normal dark ale for drinking against the chills of the coldest months of the year is doubtless as old as brewing in Northern Europe itself. I tried Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Amber Ale, 4.5 per cent abv, brewed by Hall & Woodhouse, featuring roasted barley for a winter taste.

If you want to take the middle ground and simply reduce the alcoholic content I found the Small Beer Steam, 2.7 per cent, and Small Beer Lager, 2.1 percent (as featured in AAS last month) nice flavoursome drinks. Though not specifically for winter, a good halfway beer for January reduction. Available at Waitrose or direct from www.theoriginalsmallbeer.com

USING UP LEFTOVERS

The January conundrum could also be a good time to use up some unfinished special treat or novelty drinks left over from the festivities, which often end up just taking up shelf space and may not even come out next year.

Take a well-known recipe as the basic pattern, such as Irish Coffee. It does not have to be made with Irish whiskey. There

If you want it different, substitute any or all the added liqueurs with whisky (English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh), Spanish brandy, Calvados, rum, even sherry, literally anything left over in the Christmas/New Year drinks cupboard.

I came across a half used bottle of South Africa’s best-selling Sedgewick’s Original Old Brown sherry, 17 per cent, at the back of a cupboard, clearly a candidate for stock clearance. As black as black coffee and sweet like a liqueur, it worked quite well adding body to the coffee. It is up to you. Maybe you will invent your own masterpiece. All this for no extra expenditure - except perhaps the coffee.

For a different warm winter cocktail, replace the coffee with drinking chocolate or cocoa.

And do not forget the tasty sprinklers, chocolate, grated ginger, ground nutmeg and cinnamon.
