SIR ROBIN KNOX-JOHNSTON LEADS PARADE OF SAIL
FROM THE COVER… A spectacle unfolded on Southampton Water when more than 100 yachts, RIBs and motorboats paraded as craft of all types took to the water to take part in a parade of sail, celebrating the first ever Southampton Sailing Week. At the front was one of the world’s most famous sailors, Sir Robin KnoxJohnston, in his boat Suhaili. Also leading the way was a huge Svitzer tug, shooting plumes of water into the sky, followed by a variety of caft including motorboats, RIBs, yachts and even rowing boats. There were some recognisable vessels in the fleet, including Geoff Holt MBE’s Wetwheels, a specially adapted catamaran to help people with disabilities enjoy sailing, and SS Shieldhall. Chris Rees, organiser of Southampton Sailing Week, said: “It was the perfect way to celebrate the first ever Southampton Sailing Week and we are delighted so many people from far and wide brought their boats along to take part. “The Solent is known as one of the best stretches of water in the UK for sailing and today’s parade of sail helped us to show that to the world.” Sir Robin Knox-Johnston added: “It was an honour to lead the parade of sail and to see so many people out in their boats. There is nothing quite like getting out on the water and I hope Southampton Sailing Week will become a regular fixture in the Solent’s sailing calendar.” The parade of sail marked one of the highlights of the week, which included
racing on the Solent, free dinghy sailing sessions for local schoolchildren, The Great Coal Row and other chances for people to get out on the water. www.southamptonsailingweek.co.uk
Sir Keith Mills’ British Ker 40+ Invictus, helmed by Alex Mills, has won the opening scoring round of the 2017 FAST40+ Race Circuit, winning the FAST40+ Class at the Royal Ocean Racing Club Vice Admiral’s Cup. The next event will be the Fast40+ National Championship part of the RORC IRC National Championship in the Solent, 23 – 25 June. www.fast40class.com
THEFT WARNINGS
Following a number of dinghy and outboard thefts in Lymington, Hampshire boat owners are being warned to take extra care. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
From the pictures that have been released it is clear that the deck has been ripped up and rubbish left around the leaking cabin. She is no longer able to leave under her own power. A spokesman for Alan Priddy said: ‘Worryingly, Lively Lady has been allowed to significantly deteriorate.” While the college says it only agreed to restore the deck, Alan Priddy’s team say is was always intended to restore the entire boat. Around and Around is now seeking a new team to take on Lively Lady’s restoration and the boat is expected to be transported to Alan Priddy’s base on Hayling Island. The charity says that they will: “strain every sinew to make sure she is refurbed and ready to sail on the 50th anniversary of Sir Alec arriving back in Portsmouth.” Alan Priddy also leads Team Britannia, the British round-the-world powerboat record attempt using a revolutionary eco boat. After several postponements the record attempt will get underway in October 2017 using the iconic Europa Point in British Gibraltar as the official timing mark.
LIFE CHALLENGE
Imaging sailing from Western Ireland to New Zealand. A challenge in itself, but imagine doing it in a boat no bigger than a bed and at the age of 78. Swede Sven Yrvind is planning to do just that next summer. He simply sees the voyage as “about finding out about life”. Watch his incredible video here: youtu.be/Q6LVzOpMzqA or at the All at Sea Facebook page.

Burton Waters Boat Sales have announced a new partnership with Glastron Boats. Adam Cox, Managing Director, said: “Glastron have a fantastic range of sports boats. They are fun, exciting and affordable for many families to enjoy life on the water and I am thrilled to add the range.”

FINN HAT-TRICK
There were triple celebrations for British Finn sailors who closed out three podium results at the European Championships in Marseille. Ed Wright secured silver with bronze going to Ben Cornish, while young talent Henry Wetherell took the under 23 European crown as well as sixth place overall at his first Europeans in the men’s Olympic heavyweight class.
MILLS’ FAST VICTORY
LIVELY LADY’S FAILED RESTORATION IT was an historic moment when Lively Lady, built in Calcutta in 1949, returned to Portsmouth in 2015 for a refurbishment ahead of returning to sea for a round the world trip. The 36ft-long yacht was made famous when Southsea greengrocer Sir Alec Rose completed his single-handed trip around the world in 1968. On his return, an incredible 250,000 people packed the Southsea coastline to cheer Alec and Lively Lady home. In 2015 she was sailed into the historic dockyard in Portsmouth by ocean racing legend Alan Priddy who said: “It is an historic moment - Lively Lady is back home where she is going to undergo a full rebuild so she can sail around the world again.” Alan, who is the founder of Around and Around charity, circumnavigated the globe with Lively Lady between 2006 and 2008. The refurb was to take place at Portsmouth’s International Boatbuilding Training College, but it has not been completed and, according to Portsmouth’s The News, bosses at the college have been accused of not upholding their side of the deal.

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde
IT has been a month of highs and lows in the world of boating. Here in the UK Southampton Sailing Week’s parade of sail was a real highlight. To see so many craft taking to the water was an incredible sight, and what a thrill for those taking part to have Sir Robin Knox-Johnston leading them. Let’s hope it is just the first of many Sailing Weeks. If you have photos from the parade we would love to see them. Continuing the positive news, what we have been hearing from Fairline is very promising for the future of this iconic brand. It is hard to now believe the company went into administration at the end of 2015. In this issue we bring you news of further enhancements to the Fairline Squadron 65 and details of the boat builder’s apprenticeship programme. I was invited to look around Fairline’s factory in Oundle last month, and found it a fascinating insight into the company and yacht building process. More on that next month when we explore Fairline’s 50 years as a boat builder. The Clipper 2017-18 Race starts from Liverpool on 20 August and in May the crew Allocation Day took place. One Brit who made the headlines was the Visit Seattle skipper, Nikki Henderson,
22
from Guilford. The role is a huge achievement for Nikki as, aged 23, she is the youngest skipper to lead a team in the event’s 20 year history. We wish her and all the teams the very best of luck when they set sail in a few months’ time. On a less positive note, the America’s Cup did not get off to the flying start Sir Ben Ainslie and the Land Rover BAR team had hoped for. Despite coming into Bermuda as World Series champions, they just could not find their form and won just one of their first five races. At the time of writing it is still a case of wait and see to find out if the team will progress to the next stage. Back home it was sad to read the story of Lively Lady, which, it was thought, was being restored so that she could sail around the world again. As is so often the case, different people have different reasons as to why she is still in a sorry state, but, hopefully, Alan Priddy will now be able to get the refurbishment going again. If you are taking part in this year’s Round the Island Race in association with Cloudy Bay turn to page 22 to read our event preview and, of course, have a fantastic day. Day three saw Land Rover BAR continue to struggle for form. By the end of the day Sir Ben Ainslie’s team had only won one race out of five in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers. Day four of the Qualifiers was an important one for the British team. Sir Ben said: “It was a big day for our team. We have had a couple of really tough days with a couple of losses on the run and we really needed to turn that around. We had some pretty frank conversations last night, and we all knew what we had to do today.” The conversations obviously worked as the team sailed their best race to date, winning against Artemis Racing again. The following day Mother Nature proved that she is the only force that can beat the collective might of the America’s Cup teams. The planned races were postponed for a day due to winds below the minimum six knot limit America’s Cup Class boats can compete in. Iain Murray, America’s Cup Race Management Regatta Director, said: “After four fabulous days of perfect conditions, today was our turn to deal with the light winds, I am, though, confident we will be back racing tomorrow.” As it stands ORACLE TEAM USA and Emirates Team New Zealand top the table with Land Rover BAR in third after six races each. Artemis Racing, SoftBank Team Japan and Groupama Team France are on the same points but with different numbers of races under their belts. The four Challengers with the most points advance to the next round. As the top two teams from the 2015-16 America’s Cup World Series, Land Rover BAR and Oracle Team USA gained an advantage of 2 points and 1 point respectively going into the AC Qualifiers. LONDON WELCOMES UNIQUE AQUARAMA
RIVA rarely agreed to customise their boats, but an exception to this rule led to the rarest and fastest Aquarama, and it is visiting London this month. The man who made Carlo Riva the offer he could not refuse was Ferruccio Lamborghini, the year was 1968. Ferruccio wanted one of Carlo’s Aquaramas, but he wanted it with his own engines. After much persuading Carlo agreed, and the result was the Aquarama Lamborghini. Ferruccio Lamborghini asked that his boat be powered by two of the same engines that powered his first sports car, the Lamborghini 350 GT. The result was the Aquarama Lamborghini, which reached speeds of 55mph. After Ferruccio died in 1993, the whereabouts of this unique Riva Aquarama remained unclear for some years, until a Dutch Riva enthusiast decided to track her down. With the help of a Riva restoration specialist, he found her sitting in a corner of an Italian boatyard, hidden under a tarpaulin in 2010. He acquired the boat and set about having her restored to her former
glory. The restoration was completed in 2013 and the Riva Aquarama Lamborghini was back to immaculate, as-new condition. She will be exhibited at London’s annual art and design show, Masterpiece 2017.
The show takes place in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital from 28 June to 5 July. The Riva Aquarama Lamborghini is for sale through Ventura. www.venturaeurope.com
THE Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain 2017 has set off from the national charity’s northern base in Largs, Scotland. Taking in 2,400 miles of the British Isles coastline between now and September, the crew will stop in more than 60 towns and ports where people are encouraged to get involved with activities on shore, welcome the crew and visit Moonspray, the 44ft yacht which will be home to the young people throughout the summer. The voyage will be a celebration of recovery, achievement and potential as it brings together the past, present and future young people and volunteers the Trust work with. As part of this, the crew will be engaging with local hospitals with the aim of establishing a positive outlook for the futures of young people still undergoing treatment for cancer. Dame Ellen said: “The Trust aims to rebuild confidence through positive shared experiences, so having everyone come down to wave the first crew off today and for others to welcome them into the various towns around the country, will be a huge part of this experience.” Krissi who is 21 from Hertfordshire first sailed with the Trust in 2009 and has returned for many trips since. Now joining the Round Britain 2017 crew for leg 1 as a volunteer for the Trust, Krissi explained the difference the Trust makes to young people like herself: “As a young person, the fact that you get the opportunity to be in a situation with people who are like you, and have had the same or similar experience to you, is just an amazing thing. “Because you get put back into school where everyone just views you as the ‘ill’ one, that just becomes your personality. When sailing with the Trust, where actually everyone was ill, you get to understand who you are as a person and make yourself into an older person and grow so much. As a graduate volunteer, seeing the other young people grow so much over the four day trips is an amazing experience.” You can follow the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain 2017 and share the inspiring stories of the young people involved by visiting ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org/roundbritain-2017.
STAY #LIFEJACKETSAFE CREWSAVER is working to bring about a change in people’s attitudes towards lifejacket safety. The #LifejacketSafe campaign aims to increase safety awareness by highlighting the importance of not only wearing a personal flotation device, but also making sure it is worn correctly and is well maintained. So if the worst should happen, you are well equipped and can rest assured that your safety equipment is not going to let you down. In 2014, the RNLI reported that out of the 6,752 lifejackets checked at their lifejacket clinics, 587 might not have worked as the carbon dioxide bottle had already been fired or was missing altogether. With this in mind, top of the #LifejacketSafe agenda will be the importance of lifejacket maintenance and servicing. Crewsaver are providing users with weekly top tips on buying the correct lifejacket for your activity and also how to keep it ready for action should the unthinkable happen. Users can access these tips, along with upcoming #LifejacketSafe competitions and challenges, through both the Crewsaver website and social media pages. www.crewsaver.com

Musto launched its new flagship store in The Lighthouse, Gunwharf Quays last month. Highlighting some of the most technical products the brand has to offer, the store celebrated with members of the British Sailing Team competing in motorboat races on the water with local shoppers. In addition, passers-by were given a sneak peak of the latest range including GORETEX®, Windstopper® and PrimaLoft® technologies. www.musto.com
ANDROID OLAS APP
OLAS, the man overboard location alert app from Exposure Lights, is now available on Android as well as through the App Store. Peter Hart, Elite Windsurfing coach said: “OLAS is a cost effective portable MOB alarm to help with crew rescue. A man overboard procedure always takes time, and the OLAS alarm allows you to respond immediately saving valuable seconds.” OLAS does not replace the normal MOB procedure, however it does take the stress out of the situation and enable the chance of an early self-recovery.

THE Volvo Ocean Race unveiled a series of initiatives that will create the toughest all-round test in professional sailing and strengthen the appeal of the 44-year-old round-the-world race to pro sailors, team owners and their sponsors, race partners, host cities and fans. While the final preparations are being made for the 2017-18 edition, starting on 22 October, race organisers used a live event at the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg, the home of the race’s owners and title sponsors, to present a vision for the next decade and beyond. Highlights include a new 60ft foil-assisted One Design ocean racing monohull. The race will build eight of the new monohulls and deliver them from January 2019 onwards. They will be available to lease by teams to reduce campaign start-up costs. A 32 - 50ft One Design ‘flying’ catamaran will be introduced for In-Port Races, for which a new design and build tender process was launched at the live event. The boat will use some of the technology familiar from the America’s Cup and other new multihulls, albeit in a non-development One Design mode. The offshore legs will remain the key to winning the Volvo Ocean Race, but the inshore racing will count more than the current situation, where it acts only as a tiebreaker. That means winning the race in future will demand expertise
in both monohull racing offshore and methods and operational strategies for multihull racing in the In-Port Series. the race overall. Also important will be building the pathway to the Volvo Ocean Race for sailors and sponsors, via a partnership with World Sailing, the sport’s governing body. The race and its co-owners Volvo Car Group and Volvo Group will become official partners of World Sailing, as part of a long term strategic plan to develop the next generation of offshore sailors and their sponsors by providing a clear developmental pathway. The race will establish Volvo Ocean Race Academies as part of future Host Venue partnerships and will also provide a stepping stone for offshore sailors into the Olympics, if and when offshore sailing is included, which could be a showcase event as early at Tokyo 2020. The Volvo Ocean Race began life in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race and 2023 marks its half-century. The race is considering plans for a special 50th anniversary race that will honour the sailing legends who have taken part. The next edition of the Volvo Ocean Race starts from Alicante on 22 October and will visit a total of 12 Host Cities on six continents. The teams will compete over 46,000nm to the finish line in The Hague at the end of June 2018. www.volvooceanrace.com

PUSH THE BOAT OUT GETS NATION SAILING
THOUSANDS of people across the UK took to the water over nine days in May and gave sailing and windsurfing a go with RYA Push the Boat Out. The national event, which ran from 13 - 21 May, saw over 380 sailing venues open their gates to welcome people of all ages and abilities to ‘Push the Boat Out’ with taster sessions for all. Rio 2016 Gold Medallist Saskia Clark kicked off the event at her home county of Essex. She said: “Push the Boat Out is all about people turning up, jumping in a boat and trying out a new awesome sport. “It is fantastic to see so many people, many who have never tried sailing before, getting a taste of life at their local club and having a really good experience on the water.”
Push the Boat Out, now in its fifth year, saw more venues taking part than ever before. Scaling Damn SC in the North Yorkshire Moors welcomed over 200 visitors to their club resulting in 15 new memberships and 21 courses booked on the day. Jon Pearson, the club Hon Secretary, said: “It was tremendous seeing the club such a hive of activity and to have such a wide range of club members volunteering their time to make the day such a success.” If you missed PTBO but want to start your sailing adventure visit www.rya.org.uk/ startboating. AMERICA’S Cup boats are not the only boats currently getting all the attention for foiling . The Extreme Sailing Series’ Tom Buggy and Zhik, the Official Clothing Partner to the series, put their stamp on the Qingdao Act with a ‘not for the feint hearted stunt’. It involved Tom being
towed behind a foiling GC32 whilst foiling on a wakeboard. Tom, a wellknown Extreme Sailing Series™ sailor, is part of the wildcard Team Extreme crew that also won the Zhik Speed Trophy awarded to the fastest boat at the event. Team Extreme was recorded at 29.8 knots on the first race of day one.

FAIRLINE CELEBRATES
Following an interior update and new factory fitted hardtop option, both launched at Cannes Yachting Festival last September, Fairline has announced the Squadron 65’s latest enhancements. The new windows which sweep across the Squadron 65’s hull, are a styling cue from superyacht designer Alberto Mancini. Bathing the interior of the lower deck in natural light, this style of hull window is set to become a feature across other Fairline models including the Targa 63 GTO, launching later this summer. Luxurious furnishings and handworked cabinetry are hallmarks of the Squadron range, including the Squadron 65, which features a new foredeck entertaining area with uninterrupted sea views, spacious seating and sunbeds, dining table and sky canopy.
Russell Currie, Managing Director at Fairline Yachts, said: “We are passionate about continually evolving the style of our much-loved models. This latest edition of the popular Squadron 65 is inspired by our belief that nothing should get in the way of the perfect escape - not noisy crowds, busy beaches or overbooked hotels. “The luxury and pleasure of an owners’ vacation should be absolutely and beautifully uninterrupted. And for that reason we have designed the ultimate private getaway in the form of the Squadron 65.” In further news, Fairline Yachts has sold its 100th boat, a Targa 48GT, since being re-launched at the end of January 2016. The buyer is Fairline’s new dealer for the Great Lakes in the USA, Spring Brook Marina.
Fairline Yachts also tells us that applications are now open for its apprenticeship programme. The Oundle-based boatyard is looking for 18 apprentices who are seeking a new challenge and wish to kick-start a career in engineering and advanced manufacturing. The Fairline apprenticeship programme starts in September 2017 and is open for everyone. Russell Currie said: “We are looking forward to welcoming a team of new apprentices to Fairline. It is a unique opportunity for the students to learn a wide variety of high-level skills in a fast-paced global business. “The new apprenticeship scheme is part of our robust growth strategy. We have a strong forward order book and an array of innovative new models launching over the next two years so this really is an exciting time to be joining Fairline Yachts.”
The apprentices will follow a two year course in Performing Engineering Operation, resulting in an NVQ Level 2 qualification. The apprentices will gain a versatile grounding in all aspects of production and operational work within a highly skilled manufacturing environment. Recruitment of the team of apprentices is underway. Contact 01832 273661 and ask for Sarah or Nicole or email apprenticeships@fairline.com for more information. In just 17 months, since coming out of adminsitration, Fairline Yachts has introduced innovative new models, enhanced existing ones, strengthened its international dealer network, signed partnerships, exhibited at boat shows across the globe and is celebrating its 100th boat sold. Next month we will bring you a special feature celebrating Fairline’s 50th anniversary. www.fairline.com
NEWS SNAPS OUT OF ACTION
The new £3.2m Cowes floating bridge service was suspended after just two days on 14 May. Passengers were stranded for several hours after an electrical vault caused a breakdown. Although it started again, MCA then suspended the service. A council spokeswoman said: “The council is working with the manufacturer over the issues uncovered during the testing and is consulting with the MCA to confirm that they are happy that all issues have been resolved, necessary for the service to resume.” Two weeks later Cowes Harbour Master came to the aid of a yacht that collided with the still out of action bridge. The boat became entangled in the chains that stretch across the River Medina.

NEWS SNAPS GARBAGE PATCH
All at Sea columnist Lizzy Foreman talked about plastic waste in her January 2017 column and the subject made news again last month when 38 million pieces of plastic waste were found on an uninhabited South Pacific island which is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site. The Ocean Cleanup, the Dutch foundation developing advanced technologies to rid the oceans of plastic, has announced it will start extracting plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean - within the next 12 months. It hopes to reduce its size by 50 per cent in five years.

INSURANCE DEAL The 12 Clipper Race Skippers named their teams. One of those skippers is Nicola ‘Nikki’ Henderson, 23, from Guilford, who will lead the Visit Seattle team. “I am thrilled to be appointed as the Visit Seattle skipper for the 2017-18 race edition,” said Nikki, who at aged 23, is also the youngest ever skipper to lead a team in the event’s 20 year history. Despite her young age, Nikki has already amassed an impressive sailing career having skippered in numerous inshore and offshore racing campaigns, including three ARC races across the Atlantic (twice winning the Youngest Skipper Award), two Fastnet campaigns and has sailed more than 10,000 miles in offshore deliveries. Clipper 2017-18 crew member Keith Williams, 61, from Panmure, New Zealand travelled more than 3,600 miles, taking three planes and a train, to hear his name read out by his skipper David Hartshorn.

Annual berth holders at Sutton Harbour in Plymouth can benefit from an exclusive insurance deal thanks to a new partnership. Serenity is a boat insurance package created with insurance provider Pantaenius, offering a ‘no excess’ facility for vessels berthed within the secure environment of Sutton Harbour. THE Clipper Race Crew Allocation Day took place on 20 May in Portsmouth. It was the biggest Crew Allocation attendance in the 21-year history of the biennial event. More than 450 members of crew, representing 32 nationalities, flocked to the Portsmouth Guildhall to find out their teams and skipper for the Clipper 2017-18 Race, which will depart from Liverpool on 20 August. Clipper Race Chairman and Founder Sir Robin Knox-Johnston was on hand to welcome everyone, and said: “Crew Allocation is one of the most important dates in the Clipper Race journey. “This is where the foundation for strategies and team dynamics will be first laid as the members of the 12 teams meet each other and their skipper for the first time, so I am very pleased to see a record number of people attending, from all corners of the globe.”
Clipper Race Skipper Nikki Henderson on the Visit Seattle yacht
The distance to the Portsmouth Guildhall is nothing to Keith’s upcoming journey; he has signed up for the entire 40,000nm circumnavigation and says he would not have missed Crew Allocation for anything.
Keith said: “I really wanted to meet my skipper and team as they will be my family for a year. Some of them will be doing the full trip so it will be good to start up some friendships and bounce ideas off each other for the adventure ahead.” Safety was the core of the opening message from both Sir Robin and Clipper Race Director Mark Light, who spoke about the introduction of the personal AIS Beacons for crew and the development of a Safety Committee for each boat to support the skippers. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said: “Over the next year, the crew will gain more experience and mileage in their log books than the average sailor. “The more they learn about seamanship, the safer they will be as it is important to remember Mother Nature does not give out handicaps. Crew must follow their training and always strive to be the best team player they can be. This experience will be one they will never forget.” The eleventh edition of the biennial Clipper Race is the only event of its kind for non-professional sailors. Almost 5,000 crew have been turned into seasoned ocean racers during the past 20 years in what is still a rare accomplishment: more people have climbed Mount Everest than have raced around the planet on its oceans under sail. Crew can complete the full circumnavigation, or one or more of its eight legs, in one of the toughest endurance challenges. The Clipper 2017-18 Race starts in August and along the way, the fleet of 70ft yachts will cross six oceans and stop in ports in six continents. www.clipperroundtheworld.com

TYPE 45 destroyer HMS Daring has returned to Portsmouth after spending nine months at sea protecting some of the world’s most vital shipping lanes. Hundreds of families and friends lined a packed jetty at HM Naval Base Portsmouth to welcome home the warship and her 260-strong crew following their deployment to the Middle East. During her time away, the advanced air destroyer visited 12 countries, steamed 50,000 miles and undertook 20 patrols of the Bab-al-Mandeb strait
to reassure merchant vessels and keep the sea lanes open for trade. “After nine demanding months at sea conducting operations to protect Britain’s economy, returning home is a wonderful and rewarding moment for all of Daring’s sailors and their families,” said Commander Marcus Hember, the Commanding Officer of HMS Daring. “Everyone on board has contributed to the security and stability of one of the most important areas of the world for international trade, something for which they truly deserve recognition.”

FLEUR FOR CHARTER
The ultimate dream is staying on a luxury yacht on one of the Med’s most glamorous islands. Thanks to Beds on Board this is now possible for as little as £22 per person, per night. Think of it as simply staying on a boat rather than a hotel. There will be no sailing involved so no qualifications to worry about, but the chance to experience the millionaire’s view of the Med. There is the heritage and history of Malta to enjoy. What Malta lacks in size it makes up for in culture and heritage. It is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the 500-year-old Grand Harbour of Valetta itself, not to mention pristine waters and a fabulous array of dining, from tiny bistros to chic restaurants. You could stay on Kismet, a 60ft sailing yacht moored in Valletta itself. WAITING FOR AUTUMN?
If you are waiting until after the summer rush for your sailing holiday, autumn is a great time to get away. Not only have the crowds thinned, but midday temperatures have receded. It is ideal for exploring and enjoying the beautiful vistas around the European coastline. Best of all, many companies cut their rates when the summer crowds head home. Dubrovnik is extremely busy in the summer months but come autumn it is the Adriatic at its best. The weather is less humid, and the sea is still warm enough for swimming. Alternatively Greece is always a popular destination for sailors. Whichever Greek island you pick in autumn you are likely to find warm sunshine and few crowds. The thermometer will hover around the mid to high 20s. This autumn Sea Cloud Cruises is offering two musical cruises. The cruise from Malta to Valencia will focus on classical music, with a trip to the opera on Gozo and various concerts on board and on land. On the cruise from Valencia to Casablanca, the music will have more of a jazz influence. The pianist Joja Wendt will give two concerts on board the ship and an exclusive concert on land in Málaga. Sea Cloud II, 28 October to 6 November, Valletta/Malta – Valencia/ Spain, from €4,995 per person in a two-bed outside cabin. All concerts during the cruise are included in the price of the cruise. Sea Cloud II, Valencia/Spain – Casablanca/Morocco, 6 November to 14 November, from €3,755 per person in a two-bed outside cabin. All concerts during the cruise are included. www.seacloud.com

VARSITY MATCH “OVER THE LAST DECADE, THE STANDARD AND TACTICS OF THE TEAM RACING HAVE IMPROVED CONSIDERABLY, CREATING A HEALTHY RIVALRY BETWEEN THE TWO TEAMS.”
between the two teams. Not only has the quality of racing vastly changed during this time but the format itself. Since the 1950s the match has been sailed in keelboats at a coastal location. It was decided in 1995 that the format would be changed to the best of seven races with three boats a side for the Open Match and two boats a side for the Ladies Match. In the last decade Cambridge lead the Open event by six to four and Oxford lead the Ladies event by seven to three. MOVE TO ITCHENOR The match was first sailed at Itchenor in 1991 when there were two other firsts. The races were umpired for the first time and although the first Ladies Match was in 1958, this was the first time it was sailed
concurrently with the men’s event. However they were only permitted to sail dinghies. It was not until 1995 that the ladies raced in keelboats and only in 2000 that the universities agreed the ‘Men’s event’ should become an ‘Open event’. Since then ladies have regularly competed in the Open event and have captained both universities. Depending on the weather, this year’s match will probably take place in the East Head area of the harbour; the perfect position for spectactors. The races alternate so that the two matches share one set of six boats. This history has been compiled using information from the Oxford & Cambridge Sailing Society’s website. My thanks to Anthony Butler who undertook most of the research for the Society. www.ocss.org.uk

THIS SUMMER MARKS THE 100TH OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE SAILING MATCH, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE VARSITY MATCH AT ITCHENOR SAILING CLUB. RICHARD THOMPSON LOOKS AT THE HISTORY OF THIS EVENT.
A hard-fought competition, the Varity Match is a prestigious event that will see sailors take to Chichester Harbour from 5 - 7 July. The first Varsity Match took place in 1912 at Ely and was based on the best of three races, with the university teams racing head-to-head. Cambridge won the match by two races to one. Since then it has been an annual team
race, although there was no match during the First World War and again in 1940. From 1941 to 1945 it was a low key affair sailed on the Thames. Cambridge has won a total of 55 times and Oxford 40 with four tied events. CHANGING TIMES Over the last decade, the standard and tactics of the team racing have improved considerably, creating a healthy rivalry

HELLY HANSEN JACKETS REVIEWED
WOMEN’S NEWPORT COASTAL JACKET Cayenne, white & navy www.hellyhansen.com £250
It is great to have a sailing jacket that is threequarter length. Most female sailors will agree this is far better on board that short-waisted coats. The choice of three colours are also welcomed and rather than obvious, so called feminine colours, Helly Hansen have chosen a
MEN’S MIRAGE PIER JACKET
Blue mirage, alert red, Olympian blue & navy www.hellyhansen.com £160 This is the lightest full protection coastal jacket from Helly Hansen and comes in a choice of four colours including, for those who like to stand out, the bold ‘alert red’. The coat on test was the blue mirage, which we loved. Like the Newport Coastal, the Mirage Pier has a hi vis hood and tall collar and double cuffs. It will be great for keeping the water out during boat trips. This is a very stylish jacket and has the unmistakable HH logo on the left chest, and on the back, depending how you wear the collar, ‘Helly Hansen’ is visible. These are more subtle nods to HH than some other Helly Hansen jackets. For a comfortable, waterproof and breathable jacket the Mirage Pier comes in at a very affordable price and no doubt Helly Hansen sell a bucket load. There hardest decision will be choosing which colour to go for. There are online size guides, which are well worth looking at before you buy as if you buy too large it could easily swamp you. Note, there is also a Pier 2 Pant for £130, Helly Hansen’s lightest full-protection coastal high-waisted trousers. strong palette. While personally I would avoid white, I would be happy with either the navy or cayenne. The navy jacket tested is very dark, almost black. The tall fleece lined collar works very well and definitely helps to keep the wind out, as do the double cuffs. In terms of pockets, always an important area, this jacket works incredibly well. There are hand warmer pockets as well as large cargo pockets and Aquaseal water repellent zipped chest pockets, while inside there is a handy smaller zipped pocket ideal for valuables.
When you get caught in the rain the hi vis hood is easily accessible. So yes it has plenty of great features, but it is also about the comfort and quality of the jacket. When wearing it you get the sense you are wearing something that will be durable and reliable when on board your boat. Ensure you get the size to fit, taking into account the layers you will have underneath, and it will be a comfortable jacket to last many years. Note, there is also a women’s Newport Pant for £180, a high-waisted sailing pant, featuring lightweight, protective fabric.

THE LOST HARBOUR
ALL AT SEA JUNE 2017
Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all The completed wave screen at Haslar aspects of leisure boating.
If you are entering this this year’s Round the Island Race spare a thought for the lost harbour of the Isle of Wight. The hidden charms of the small harbour at Puckaster may be fine in an offshore breeze but it is not the place to be in a South Easterly. The erosion caused by wave action is clearly visible
In certain weather conditions it can be a challenging experience taking on the Round the Island Race. Image: Paul Wyeth
“Eventually the picturesque threestorey Victoria Hotel would crumble into the sea during a landslip.”
O
ne of the great attractions of the Round the Island Race must be the passage around the ‘back of the Wight’. On a good day, this is a stunning sail, for with the Needles at your back you can enjoy open water conditions blessed by a scenic backdrop of the steep cliffs and green fields that are such a part of the island coastline. After ‘running the gauntlet’ of St. Catherine’s Point, you then dip into the holiday resort hotspot of Sandown Bay before rounding up and returning into the Solent. It is an idyllic trip that makes the event special, but… given another set of conditions, it can be anything but an easy sail. Another attempt was made in Victorian times to tame the south coast of the Isle of Wight. There is little remaining today of what was known as ‘Spindler’s Follies’
In a brisk to strong wind blowing either up or down the Channel, once you have turned left at the Needles, you are pretty much committed. It might be rough outside, but with the ebb sluicing its way out through the Needles channel, going back can be worse than going on. Under these conditions, with clumps of overfalls spaced right around the back of the island, conditions can be as testing as the Corinthian club sailors, who make up the majority of the fleet, will ever want to experience. And if something does go wrong, then you are in the badlands, for the next safe harbour is all the way around east to the shelter of Bembridge.
PUCKASTER COVE Yet this was not always the case, for going way back into history, the back of the island was graced by a small and secure harbour at Puckaster Cove, which is just a short distance east of the dangerous waters of St Catherine’s Point. The first mentions of the Cove being used as a landing point for trade go as far back as Roman times, when it is believed that tin ore, mined in Cornwall, was brought ashore there. These first records are supported by the fact that a nearby farm (and the local pub!) both bear the name The Buddle. The clue is in the fact that a buddle is an inclined pond or pit for washing and separating ore.
One other big advantage for sailors coming ashore at Puckaster was that there were easily accessible fresh water springs that could be used to refresh the water barrels before voyages continued up or down the Channel. In the days of Norman Britain, much of the pilgrim traffic from the continent would land here, with these pilgrims being easily identifiable by the scallop shell they would have proudly worn on their clothing as a symbol of their piety. Visitors today to the ‘old’ church at St. Lawrence, which looks out over the Channel, will find many signs of the scallop shell insignia, for the church is on the St. Rhadegund’s pilgrim path that leads north eastwards away from the cove. ROYAL SHELTER Later, as the truism that the two certainties in life were death and taxes grew, it made sense for those wishing to escape the attentions of the ‘Excise Man’ that this scarcely populated stretch of coastline would make an ideal dropping point for their illicit cargoes. Records from the time indicate that the construction of roads in the area were a move in part to counter this otherwise lucrative trade. Although exposed to a south easterly breeze, in the south westerlies that are so prevalent in the area, Puckaster Cove still afforded reasonable shelter. Parish records report that on 1 July, 1675, King Charles II took shelter from stormy weather out in the Channel by coming ashore safely into the harbour. In this respect Charles was lucky, for Puckaster Cove is all but co-located with Reeth Bay. You did not want to be known for coming ashore at Reeth, for the name is a more modern derivative of the word Wreath, as this was the spot where the swirling tides of St. Catherine’s Point tended to deposit the bodies of sailors drowned in the many shipwrecks in the area. CHANGING FORTUNES As the sailing abilities of boats and navigation improved, the advantages
of using the harbour at Puckaster started to diminish and it became easier to enter the Solent, making landfall at Yarmouth, Newtown or Newport. However, in the early 1880s on the eastern edge of Puckaster Cover, where it becomes Binnel Bay, the wealthy German philanthropist William Spindler decided to tame the naturally wild coastline by building up a stone promenade and harbour. More exposed to the elements than Puckaster the plan was a failure, as successive winter storms reduced the workings to rubble, though some sections of the harbour wall still exist, being known locally as ‘Spindler’s Follies’. In more modern times Puckaster Cove would once again make news when the famous island yachtsman Uffa Fox took up residence there. Although more commonly associated with Cowes, it would be when he resided at Puckaster that Fox spent time teaching the young Prince Philip the finer points of sailing in the local waters. Sadly, the southern shoreline of the Isle of Wight is being constantly caught between two conflicting geological actions. From seaward, there is the pounding erosion from wave and tide, whilst from the landward side a geological fault is resulting in the coastal strip sliding inexorably into the sea. Even before the twin threats of climate change (above average rainfall being a major factor) and rising sea levels made the situation even worse, repeated landslips would destroy much of the sheltered coastline around the cove. Eventually, the picturesque threestorey Victoria Hotel, one of the most conspicuous buildings on this part of the coast, would crumble into the sea during a landslip. For the yachts racing around the island, even if they come close inshore to cheat an adverse tide, little of the history of the cove will be visible. But for visitors to the many island marinas wanting a day ashore and something different, Puckaster Cove and its various footpaths give a wonderful insight to another aspect of the island’s history. ROUND THE ISLAND RACE The Round the Island Race in association with loudy Bay, hosted by the Island Sailing lub, was first sailed in and sailors still compete for the legendary Gold Roman Bowl today.
T
he Round the Island Race in association with Cloudy Bay really is a ‘Race For All’ with professional sailors racing alongside newcomers to the sport. Not only are all abilities welcomed, but any boat, from cruiser to maxi yacht, can enter. This one-day yacht race regularly welcomes more than 1,600 boats and 16,000 sailors, making it one of the largest yacht races in the world.
IT TAKES AN HOUR-ANDFORTY-MINUTES TO GET THE ENTIRE FLEET OF 1,600 BOATS SAFELY UNDERWAY
RACE TIME
Starting at the Royal Yacht Squadron line the course is around 50nm anti-clockwise round the Isle of Wight. On 1 July, the first start is at 0530 with HW Portsmouth at 0547hrs BST, so there should be plenty of west bound tide, but it is always worth studying the tide tables in advance. You do not want to be caught out by sudden changes in the weather, so make sure you have an up-to-date forecast. Raymarine provide a live weather briefing, to which all skippers are welcome, at the Island Sailing Club at 1800 on 30 June. With so many boats starting you must keep to the designated waiting areas as much as possible before your scheduled start sequence. While waiting do not obstruct Cowes fairway, the deep-water channel or the start line. Listen to the broadcasts on VHF 22 which will keep you informed on progress and only move to the start area once your warning (10 minute) signal has been made. Check the strength of the tide to make sure you are not carried across the line too early.
the website or via screens at the Island Sailing Club and the Race Village in Cowes Yacht Haven. Race competitors are welcomed as a visitor to the Island Sailing Club, which is also where the race prizegiving ceremony is held at 12 noon on the Sunday. Everyone is welcome and the bar will be open from 11am.

RACE RECORD
Last year a new race record for multihulls of 2hrs 23mins and 23secs was set by Lloyd Thornburg on Phaedo 3 (smashing Sir Ben Ainslie’s 2013 record by 28 minutes), but for most competitors the return to Cowes will be during the afternoon and well into the evening on a light airs day. In 2016 Sir Keith Mills’ FAST 40+ Invictus missed winning the coveted Gold Roman
Bowl for the first IRC yacht on corrected time, having to settle for second place. His crew included Invictus Games competitor Zoe Williams, as well as Prince Harry. The main prize instead went to Bernard Langley’s TP52 Gladiator, which powered around the course to become the second monohull to finish, crossing the line less than four-and-a-half hours after the start. With Cloudy Bay announced as the Presenting Sponsor, this year the race includes amongst its entries the Farr 52 Bob, entered as Bob by Cloudy Bay, skippered by Stephen Durkin. Amongst the crew is Cloudy Bay Brand Ambassador, adventurer and storyteller, Ben Fogle. Will Bob by Cloudy Bay and Ben Fogle walk away with the main prize? They will face some tough competition on the day. There is no waiting around for results as they are published immediately they become available. Results can be seen on

WATCH THE RACE
For those wanting to watch the race, there are many good vantage points for spectators. From 0530 early risers can capture the excitement of the starts near the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, where the cannons are fired, and along The Green in Cowes. Assuming no delays, the starting sequence is scheduled to continue until 0710. Yarmouth Pier and Fort Victoria, through to Totland will see the greatest concentration of boats after the starts. Tennyson Down East of The Needles commands a high vantage point. St Catherine’s Point by the lighthouse and Niton through to Ventnor usually enjoy spectacular spinnaker views when the wind is in the South or West. Views over Bembridge Ledge, Seaview and from Ryde Pier are always entertaining too.

THE PREPARATION
CHECK LIST
Image: Eden
Before race day arrives it is important that you check your boat over thoroughly. The extra pressure when racing will expose any weaknesses in sails, running rigging and other equipment. You do not want anything to be slowing you down, and that includes a dirty hull, so get the underwater parts cleaned. Also check there are no cruising items on board like barbecues. A kedge anchor should be easily accessible, but remember if your anchor is stowed on deck it must not protrude over the bow. In such a large fleet, your unique sail number is vital and compulsory if the organisers are to record you correctly at the finish. You need to ensure it is clear on your mainsail and that the numbers on your sails match those given on your entry form. It is compulsory that dodgers with your full sail number on them are clearly shown. As well as preparing your boat you need to get your crew ready for the big day. It is a good idea to arrange a practice day for newcomers to familiarise themselves with your boat. On the day take care of your crew, ensuring the young and not so strong get some rest. Also, change responsibilities regularly as few people can maintain good concentration without regular breaks. You could be 12 hours or more on the water so having the right waterproof clothing, fluids and energy food is essential.
Image: Paul Wyeth
HAVEN’T ENTERED YET?
There is still time to enter with standard entries open until midnight on 17 June. If you want to take part in the race but are not sure what you need to do before race day, just follow these simple, but important, steps and you can concentrate on enjoying race day.
READ THE NOTICE OF RACE
Make sure that your boat is eligible to take part and that you understand the requirements that you and your boat need to meet. The Notice of Race contains all the eligibility criteria, as well as start times and the prizes you can win. It covers, for example, ratings and whether your boat meets the entry conditions. The Notice of Race is available at the Round the Island Race website.
ENTRY DETAILS
Before completing the entry form, make sure you have all the necessary details. If you are entering for the ISC Rating System class, you will need to provide some measurement information for the rating allocation. Read the Notice
of Race and check whether you are eligible for one of the special trophies for family teams, young sailors and sailing school boats.
MAKE YOUR ENTRY ONLINE
Once you have all the required information you can fill in the online form and make your payment. Next time around save yourself some money and take note of the early-bird entry closing date which, this year, was on 18 February.
CREW LIST
You must supply the organisers will a full list of crew members by 28 June. This is easily done online and can be up-dated if required.
SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
About a week before race day you will receive a link to the Sailing Instructions, which are essentially the ‘special rules’ of the race and explain what you can, cannot and must do on race day. Follow them carefully to avoid disappointment on race day. You should also brush up on your general rules knowledge by reading the Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020.

@Stelmaria8405T Just entered @RoundtheIsland race again, 2nd time with this crew on the start line...can’t wait #raceforall @Aeronatz A little excited to learn I will be competing in this years #RTIR against @Benfogle @ RoundtheIsland
@SRoncoroni This my 15th #raceforall. Still get excited. Still want to do better every year. And never forget it is the course of the 1st @americascup @RoundtheIsland That beautiful crack of dawn start with the huge fleet surging towards the Needles is inspiring. http:// Facebook.com/roundtheisland #sharingthelove
It goes without saying you should thoroughly check your boat and give it a good clean. Check the letters and number printed on your sails are the same on each sail and match the information on your entry form. If you can, get a dodger made with your full sail number on it and display it as detailed in the Sailing Instructions. Attach your Fleet Flag, which you will receive in the post about 10 days before the race.
TIDES AND WEATHER
Do not be caught out! HW Portsmouth is around 0547 BST which should give plenty of favourable tide to the Needles - but make sure you know what to expect from the tidal streams. Also, check the expected weather conditions, either from local radio or one of the weather websites.
SAFETY BOOK
Probably the single most important thing to find time for. Read it when you receive the link, read it again before you go racing.
FUTURE DATES
Although late June is usually chosen for the race, the organisers also take into account when tides are most favourable. This may lead to a late May or early July race day. You can already plan your raced five years ahead: n 23 June, 2018 n 29 June, 2019 n 30 May, 2020 n 3 July, 2021 n 25 June, 2022

BOAT PREPARATION AND FLEET FLAG
SAILING FOR CHARITY
Many of those taking part in the race will be raising money for charity, whether the official race charity or one of their own choosing. A common way to raise funds is to set up a Just Giving page. The official charity is The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which has been involved in the race for 10 years and has raised more than £250,000 in that time. The Trust takes young people sailing to help them regain their confidence on their way to recovery from cancer. A flag to wave on the day will be given to those who raise over £50.
The Trust is planning to enter four boats in this year’s race with 28 inspirational young people on board. Dame Ellen said: “The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust feels extremely privileged to be the official charity for the Round the Island Race. The young people sailing are part of our Return to Sail programme which helps us to build long term relationships with the young people we work with during the difficult period between finishing treatment and hopefully reaching remission. We are all looking forward to getting out on the start line.” www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org

SLING YOUR HOOK
9
One of several sayings used unkindly to urge a quick departure. This one is a reference to the sailor’s hammock and the suggestion that he slings it on another hook elsewhere. From boatwork comes ‘shove off’ which literally means to push the boat away from the ship’s side or quay and is still the recognised term. Or a person may be told to ‘beat it’ which is to beat out of port in the first auspicious wind, or from the practice of ‘beating to quarters’ when ships’ crews ran to battle stations to the beat of a drum.

This Month 54 Years Ago… June 1963 The first lifesaving service by an inflatable inshore lifeboat crew was on 3 June 1963 when Aberystwyth volunteers rescued three people and their dog who had been cut off by the tide. Inflatable lifeboats were introduced to the RNLI fleet to help crews reach areas close to shore, cliffs and caves. These inshore lifeboats remain the workhorse of the RNLI today.

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A with Dave Atkinson, Rear Commodore at the Island Sailing Club and in charge of race management for the Round the Island Race. deliver the race to armchair enthusiasts around the world. The team behind the race has very extensive knowledge gained over a number of years. This year will be my 35th year of involvement with the management of the race.
WILL YOU BE TAKING PART IN THIS YEAR’S RACE?
WHEN DID YOU GET INTO SAILING?
Like many people I started at school, sailing a variety of dinghies like Mirrors and a very old Enterprise.
WHAT ARE YOU SAILING NOW?
I am currently sailing on a variety of yachts, mainly in the IRC classes.
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITH THE ROUND THE ISLAND RACE IN ASSOCIATION WITH CLOUDY BAY?
I chair the organising committee that is responsible for making the race happen and am involved in the entire management of the race supported by a group of eight with various skills such as rules, technology, race management and so on. Gavin Reid, Yachtsman of I also have the remit for the marketing and the Year 2016. Image: Sam communications, working closely with a team to Kurtul Photography
Unfortunately not! I am required to be ashore to make sure the race runs as it should on the day. It is a very long day as the management team starts two to three hours before the first classes begin, looking at the latest weather situation and getting all those last minute issues resolved. This year it looks like a 2am start for us (05:30 first start) and we do not usually finish until the early hours of Sunday morning.
WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE AS REAR COMMODORE OF THE ISLAND SAILING CLUB INVOLVE?
25
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?
There are many that inspire me, for a variety of reasons. For example, the current crop of high profile sailors like Sir Ben Ainslie and Alex Thompson, both of whom I have had the pleasure of sailing with, but also some up-and-coming sailors for their enthusiasm for the sport.
All the sailing activities fall within my remit and being a Flag Officer I am also involved in the general management of the club.
WHAT OTHER EVENTS IS THE ISLAND SAILING CLUB INVOLVED WITH?
The club runs a variety of racing alongside the Round the Island Race throughout the year. This year we have the Dragon Class Edinburgh Cup and the Little Britain Cup. We are also involved with Cowes Week and have an active Tuesday evening series which sees 40 plus boats taking part each week. The club also owns a fleet of nine Sonar keelboats that members have access to, and these are also used for many events throughout the season. Images: Paul Wyeth
WHAT CHANGES CAN WE EXPECT AT THE RACE THIS YEAR? Outwardly it is business as usual but behind the scenes we have had to make quite a few cost savings as we do not yet have a title sponsor in place this year. We have dispensed with the large committee boats at outer ends of the finish replacing these with very large inflatable buoys. We are keen to maintain, wherever possible, the same standards and expectations of our competitors.
WHY DO YOU THINK THE ROUND THE ISLAND RACE HAS BECOME SUCH AN ICONIC SAILING EVENT?
There is a lot of history around the race; this year is the 86th edition.

GREEN FOCUS
UP FOR THE CHALLENGE Only launched two years ago, The Green Blue’s University Sailing Sustainability Challenge has already led to a new sustainability initiative with the RS Aero UK Class. an Reading, Green Blue Sustainability O cer SUSTAINABLE CONNECTIONS
With Reading University Sailing Club signed up to the 2016-2017 Challenge, Commodore Ben Rolfe was keen to explore his connections with the RS Aero UK Class. Fast forward to 2017 and thanks to Ben, his father Nigel Rolfe, UK Committee Chairman and Peter Barton, International & UK Class Association
The Green Blue donated RS Aero Awards
W
hen The Green Blue launched its University Sailing Sustainability Challenge in 2015, little did it know that within two years it would have doubled in size with over 20 university sailing teams competing for gold, silver and bronze awards. With sustainability, as with many other walks of life, there are connections and connectors; moments in time or people you come across who unlock the next opportunity. And it was through one of the universities that another door opened for The Green Blue.
Manager, The Green Blue announced their support of a new sustainability initiative with the RS Aero UK Class at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show. The first step was to publish a charter, and as much as environmental policies and charters generally tend to be greeted with little enthusiasm, they are still a great way of showing a public commitment to achieving some very specific actions. For the RS Aero UK Class the ambition was set to become the first ever ‘environmentally sustainable’ fleet in the UK through a series of practical actions including: n recycling of waste at events n using reusable water bottles n making sure bow stickers are applied correctly to prevent any falling off in the water n following the Check Clean Dry guidance to minimise the spread of invasive non-native species around the UK n a call to action for all host venues on the RS Aero UK Class training and event schedule to also do their bit to minimise any impact on the environment.
CHARTER IN ACTION
Hosing down a boat to prevent the spread of alien species
The first event of the season got underway on 1 April at Burghfield Sailing Club with 27 RS Aeros competing in the newly named inaugural sustainability challenge. Sustainable awards were donated by The Green Blue for the five rig, seven rig and nine rig categories.
TGB Sustainability Charter with Peter Barton, Charlie Pearce, Nigel Rolfe and Kate Fortnam
It was great to see the charter in action, with single use disposable water bottles replaced by reusable sports bottles and boats coming off the water being checked for alien species and hosed down before departure being just a couple of examples. One of the critical success factors of the University Sailing Sustainability Challenge was the appointment of Sustainability Officers to track progress and chivvy folk along. RS Aero UK Class have followed suit and appointed not one but a team of three Sustainability Representatives - Charlie Pearce, Jane and Alice Hutchins - to roll out the charter. They may be spotted at events peering around recycling bins or looking at light bulbs and taps as part of the environmental evaluations they will be completing over the coming weeks, and needless to say it is great to have them on board. If you are interested in taking a closer look at the RS Aero UK Class Charter visit www.rsaerosailing.org/ docs/490404488(1).pdf or if you are a member of a class association keen to know how your class can become more sustainable contact The Green Blue at info@thegreenblue.org.uk or visit www.thegreenblue.org.uk.

ICOM
VHF: IC-M93D EURO VHF/DSC Handheld Radio £299.95
The IC-M93D EURO has an integrated DSC/GPS giving you the facility to send and receive DSC calls. A dedicated DSC receiver continuously monitors CH70 and is independent of the main receiver and other operation. Other important safety at sea offerings include a built-in compass, navigation and Man Over Board features. Advanced noise cancelling technology on the radio reduces background noise by up to 90 percent on both outgoing and incoming calls making sure your communications are heard. The IC-M93D EURO features Icom’s exclusive Float’n Flash and AquaQuake technology. Should the radio be dropped overboard, a flashing light will activate, making it easier to locate. The Float’n Flash feature works regardless of whether the power is turned on. The AquaQuake draining function uses low-frequency sound waves to clear water
away from the radio’s speaker grill for clear audio. Additional radio features include the IPX7 waterproof rating, 50 waypoint memories with alphanumeric names for navigation and a loud speaker.
GARMIN
VHF: VHF 110i or VHF210i AIS £ 299.99 / £ 629.99
The VHF 110i is Garmin’s entry-level radio, offering 25 watts of transmit power and Class D Digital Selective Calling compatibility via NMEA 2000. In addition to dedicated buttons and knobs for ease of use, the VHF 110i features three soft keys that allow boaters to intuitively see and select the information they want, while eliminating the clutter they do not. The VHF 110i also features NOAA weather alerts and Position Tracking, which allows a mariner to locate and keep tabs on up to three boats that use a Garmin system. For mariners wanting to take advantage of the Automatic Identification System, the VHF 210i AIS incorporates all of the features mentioned above and adds a built-in AIS receiver for improved situational awareness and greater confidence on the open waters. With 25 watts of transmit power, the VHF 200i AIS also comes standard with a two-way hailer system that can be connected to a hailer horn or external speaker on the deck or tower for on board communication. Like the VHF 110i, the VHF 200i AIS provides standard DSC functionality, including distress calling and direct calling with user programmed Maritime Mobile Service Identity

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2017 The first thing I check is that my chart cartridge is up-to-date, then power up the system and check that I am getting a good GPS fix. That is the first critical item “where am I?” dealt with. The second is depth, so check that you are getting a credible depth reading on the echosounder or fishfinder, then check to see that shallow water alarms are set as you want them. After knowing where I am and that I am in safe water my next priority is see and be seen, so check that you are seeing AIS targets on the chartplotter and, if you have Class B transmitting AIS, check that it is working correctly too. If you have not upgraded since 2015, chances are you are out-of-date and missing out on the latest features, capabilities and bug fixes. Be sure to check the updates section of the manufacturer’s website for the latest software. YOUR AUTOPILOT If you have an autopilot fitted, the chartplotter will use the heading sensor in this to give heading. Switch on the heading vector (previously red, but now purple) on the chartplotter and make sure it points the right way. If it is out the chances are someone has left their toolbox right beside the sensor. The heading ideally needs to be set up away from the dockside. Older autopilots benefit from regular calibration to redo the deviation curve; recent ones do this automatically in the background.
radar overlay on. Make sure that the land echoes are accurately overlaid the land on the chart; if they do not then it means the heading information from the autopilot is out and needs calibrating. YOUR VHF And finally do not forget the VHF. A common fault is water in the aerial cable which does not affect reception but reduces transmission range to just about zero. A test call with a distant station (not the marina 100 yards away) will prove the system. Alan has worked with Raymarine for many years and enjoys running their Navigational and Radar courses. www.raymarine.co.uk/training YOUR RADAR The next thing you need to check is your radar. This is best done away from the dockside. Check you are showing targets on the screen and then with the radar in Head Up (just for this test, I use Course Up normally) point your boat at a small target and make sure it shows on the heading line. Once this is done go to the chart display and put

Both powerboat and sailing features are available in all corepacks, including heading hold, wind hold, tack/jibe, step turns and more. If you team it up with a compatible Garmin networked chartplotter, you can also enjoy features like route following, route engage, Autopilot Virtual Device and optional BlueChart® g2 Vision® HD cartography with patented Auto Guidance 3.0 technology, that can automatically follow GPS paths. The GHP™ 10’s patented Shadow Drive technology gives boaters the security of knowing they maintain control even when relying upon the autopilot. Use this Shadow Drive attachment to automatically disengage the autopilot if the helm is turned, allowing the helmsman to maneuver the boat.
The Simrad® NSS Evo3 multifunction displays feature SolarMAX™ HD screens, Dual Channel CHIRP sounder compatibility and an expanded keypad. As a full function Class B transponder, it also sends the boat position to other AIS users. The GPS is built in and Nomad ships with a compact, 25cm external VHF antenna with sucker cup mount. It can also connect to any regular VHF antenna. WiFi and USB interfaces are standard and there are a wide range of free and premium compatible apps for iOS, Android, PC and Mac. The WiFi connection allows up to seven tablets or iPads to connect. The HX870E 6W handheld DSC VHF transceiver with built-in GPS is an upgrade from the HX851E. Whilst still having all of the intuitive features of its predecessor, a major new feature is the ability to plot up to 20 routes from a directory of 200 waypoints. This model also has a much larger screen, whilst the battery capacity has increased from 1150mAh to 1800mAh. Other features include a Group Monitoring function, which allows the positions of up to nine other HX870E users to be shown on the screen’s compass-style display, ideal for flotilla sailing or sea angling events. The HX870E is built on a die cast chassis which enables it to cope with the harshest environment and the submersible waterproof rating is IPX8 (5 feet for 30 minutes). Another important feature is that the automatic distress strobe will flash a bright SOS the moment the radio hits the water, even if the radio is switched off at the time. The Class D DSC VHF has all the main marine transceiver channels, plus VHF channel 70 set aside on a separate receiver for DSC operation.

EXPERTS’ FORUM
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating. It is important, though, that you activate a distress beacon only in a true life or death situation.
USING EMERGENCY BEACONS TO INCREASE LIKELIHOOD OF RESCUE Emergency beacons can aid search and rescue efforts, but it is essential that you know how to use them correctly. Ideally buy a 406Mhz beacon with built-in GPS. These, when activated, communicate directly with emergency personnel and have helped save more than 40,000 lives since 1982. The following tips can help you before and during an emergency situation, and help increase your chance of rescue.
JUSTINE HEELEY, MARINE DIRECTOR AT MCMURDO UK, SHARES SOME TOP TIPS ON HOW TO MAXIMISE YOUR CHANCE OF RESCUE USING EMERGENCY BEACONS.
REGISTER YOUR BEACON It is vital that you register the beacon with your national EPIRB authority. Each beacon has a unique digital identity and is sent along with your 406MHz distress
ENSURE ANTENNA IS UNOBSTRUCTED Upon beacon activation, make sure the device’s antenna is pointing upward with a clear view to the sky. Take it outside of a vessel, elevate it, keep it above water, find a clearing and ensure that it is free of any other obstructions.
signal to the Search and Rescue Services. Pre-registration of the device means that the unique digital identity is recognised by the authorities when the distress signal is received. You can find out more about registration at the COSPASSARSAT website at www.cospas-sarsat.org. KEEP UP-TO-DATE Do not forget to keep your beacon’s registration information updated as frequently as possible – especially in the days leading up to your departure. SELF-TEST YOUR BEACON Before setting out, it is important to test your beacon to make sure it is functioning
ANYONE who is planning to go out on the water needs to be prepared for an emergency. It is vital that you not only carry the right equipment, but that you know what you should do in an emergency situation, whether you are alone or in a group. It is important that you can alert people when you are in trouble so they can find you quickly and get you to safety.
CHADDOCK & FOX PROMOTIONS
Stay calm as it could be several hours before assistance arrives
properly. You will also want to include a 24-hour contact in your registration profile. We recommend having your beacon serviced on an annual basis by an approved service centre. KEEP THE BEACON WITHIN REACH The last step before departure is to identify an easy-to-access and effective location for your beacon. There are too many stories of individuals who lose time in an emergency situation because the beacons are in a cabinet or out of immediate reach. Emergency beacons are one of the most reliable tools for improving your chance of rescue. However always keep as many communication options as possible, including mobile phones, radios and automatic identification systems.
17 JUNE 2017 11AM-5PM
NerdagedDon-EVENTS PRE
STAY IN THE SAME LOCATION In the majority of search and rescue situations, you should remain in the same location as long as possible. This may be especially hard on or in water, though having the emergency beacon on and near you at all times will ensure rescuers receive accurate signals, even if you find yourself drifting. MAKE YOURSELF VISIBLE The more you understand the nature of the location, the easier it will be to make yourself clearly visible to search and rescue teams. Several beacons have strobe lights to aid rescue efforts. Use any and all tools at your disposal, including flares, other lighting or any other bright or reflective devices. GIVE THE RESCUE EFFORT TIME AND STAY CALM A beacon can be activated in seconds, but depending on where you are, it may be several hours – or longer – before the rescue authorities are able to come to your assistance. www.mcmurdogroup.com

STAYING SAFE AFLOAT
RYA SafeTrx App, the mobile vessel tracking solution, has additional enhancements and continues to prove its worth to sailors.
O
The RYA SafeTrx app contains many practical features to help you plan your trip. Use the ‘Explorer’ map to view port and marina details, UK Met Office weather data and the Inshore Waters forecast, nautical chart information, the positions of nearby coastguard bases and RNLI stations and local VHF channels. The app can also be used to make a distress call to 999. When an emergency call is activated, the phone call to 999 is initiated and an emergency location update is sent to the SafeTrx Monitoring Console. The HM Coastguard can access the console to view the recorded location, heading and speed at the time the call was made. This summer will see enhancements to the RYA SafeTrx app: SafeTrx Communicator: Install the RYA SafeTrx Communicator instant messaging application so that the HM Coastguard can communicate directly with you in the case of an emergency. Social Sharing: Give family and friends peace of mind ashore by sharing your real-time location on a live map, allowing them to track you while you are on the water. Community Net: RYA SafeTrx gives you the option of sharing your current location with other RYA SafeTrx water users when you have a trip in progress. Should you need to contact HM Coastguard for help, the operator can send a message via the app to other vessels in a geo-fenced area to ask them for assistance. Boaters that have accepted the request from the HM Coastguard will
CONSTANTLY EVOLVING
The goal of the software consulting company behind the development of SafeTrx is to make it the default technology for keeping the ordinary seafarer and leisure sports persons safe at sea. With that goal in mind, the product must continue to adapt to new challenges and opportunities and the SafeTrx team recognises that the best informed people to guide the adaptation are those organisations that have been successfully deploying and utilising SafeTrx and actually saving lives. The European SafeTrx User Group meets regularly, enabling the development team to work directly with those that are providing life-saving services at sea. The RYA works closely
APP AT WORK
On 17 April, South Africa’s National Sea Rescue Institute’s Mykonos lifeboat station was activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following a SafeTrx distress call received from two people on a capsized RIB offshore of Gonnemanskraal, Jacobsbaai. Reporting a third person was still scuba diving from their boat at the capsized position, they made an emergency call to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to raise the alarm. A family in Cape Town who had received the SafeTrx overdue SMS message, contacted friends in Jacobsbaai who launched their private boat to go to assist. The casualty boat was righted and towed to shore by the National Sea Rescue Institute and once safely ashore their boat was recovered and no further assistance was required.

be able to see the location of the vessel in distress on the app. Enhanced User Experience: RYA SafeTrx 2017 also has several user experience improvements to make it an even easier app to use: • The ability to select a subset of emergency contacts to communicate with when starting a Sail Plan trip. • The Force Touch functionality has been added to iOS 7 devices so that end users can quickly initiate an emergency call, a Sail Plan trip or Track Only mode trip at the touch of a button. • Improved notifications mean that you get more noticeable alerts from the RYA SafeTrx message centre.
with members of the User Group to directly influence the features and design of SafeTrx. Such cooperation and involvement with the User Group ensures the product remains relevant and always fit-for-purpose. The group recently addressed the challenging concept of ‘international cooperation’ and how it might be aligned to the SafeTrx strategy. This is a complex, multifaceted area for the community to explore with many challenges from a territorial, jurisdictional, legal, political and economic standpoint. However, it will undoubtedly give rise to enormous safety, efficiency and economy of resources benefits should these all be resolved satisfactorily. Nessa Malone, SafeTrx Product Manager, said: “We feel it is important that all those involved have a sense of shared ownership in the future of the platform and the SUG meetings help us to achieve that.”
FR
UR safety on the water should always be a high priority, but is often something we take for granted, especially when our minds are focused on enjoying and making the most of our time afloat. With the full support of the MCA, the RYA SafeTrx app promotes enjoyable boating, a safe mindset and good practice. RYA SafeTrx monitors your boat journeys and alerts designated emergency contacts should you fail to arrive on time. Ideal for windsurfers, kite surfers and competitive sailing enthusiasts, RYA SafeTrx also offers a quick start feature that starts recording at the touch of a button and allows you to re-live trips using the track playback feature.

MARINA FOCUS GATEWAY TO THE SOLENT
ALL AT SEA JUNE 2017
Shamrock Quay William Street, Southampton, Hampshire SO14 5QL Tel: 02380 229461 Saxon Wharf Lower York Street, Northam, Southampton, Hampshire SO14 5QF Tel: 02380 339 490
MDL’s Southampton marinas, Shamrock Quay and Saxon Wharf Marinas, are ideally located on the River Itchen. BOTH marinas offer easy access to the diverse waters of the Solent and beyond. Steeped in history, they have played a crucial part in the city’s vibrant boating scene for almost 85 years. Shamrock Quay takes its name from the famous J-class yacht, Shamrock V, which was built on the site in 1931 for the America’s Cup. Owned by MDL Marinas, Shamrock Quay holds the highly-coveted Five Gold Anchors rating. This accolade is awarded by The Yacht Harbour Association in recognition of high standards from excellent customer service to stringent health and safety procedures. Located just north of Shamrock Quay, Saxon Wharf is a comprehensive marine service centre offering facilities
for superyachts and other large craft. Situated on the River Itchen, it is the ideal location for big boats in need of secure, quick turnaround lift-outs, repair work or full scale refits. Combined, both marinas offer berth holders a fully inclusive marina service, ideal for both leisure boating and maintenance work. A stone’s throw from the marinas is a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops on-site, celebrating local suppliers and produce. Shamrock Quay regularly organises a range of events and activities for members to get involved with. These include a monthly Classics on the Quay event – a celebration of classic vehicles for car enthusiasts, held on the third Sunday of each month. Freedom Berthing gives you the opportunity to explore any of the 18 marinas in MDL’s UK network, plus 96 European destinations in France, Spain and Italy
FACILITIES
Both marinas offer first-class berths, toilets and showers, laundry facilities, electricity and WiFi. There are also extensive shoreside facilities, including chandleries, bars and restaurants. The 255-berth Shamrock Quay Marina is a major centre for refits and boat building, with many specialist trades on site offering a variety of services ranging from sail makers to engineers. There is also a bar, restaurants, café and shops. Eatery highlights include the Cove and Quay FIFTEEN restaurants, both serving dishes inspired by the coast, championing locally sourced produce. The Yellow Welly Café is the perfect spot to grab a presail breakfast. Its full English is renowned in the local area and offers an ideal start to your day on the water. For a taste of the sea, the marina also offers a bustling fresh fish market, which holds a unique pop-up restaurant during the
summer months, even delivering fresh fish platters straight to your boat. Shamrock Quay offers storage ashore for over 200 boats, and there is a 75-ton travel hoist and a 47-ton boat mover. All lifting at the yard is carried out by MDL’s highly qualified team. Saxon Wharf has a 200-ton boat hoist and heavy duty, fully serviced pontoons which can accommodate boats up to 80m. The Dry Stack facility offers secure dry berthing and on-demand launching and lifting for boats up to 13m. There is ample space for storage ashore and it is also a MDL Marine Service Centre, offering maintenance and repair facilities. As part of MDL Marinas’ berthing package, annual members receive Freedom Berthing membership and complimentary access to 114 marinas across the UK and Europe, opening up cruising opportunities far beyond the Solent.

Both marinas o er a great starting location for a leisurely cruise to the Solent or for a break in Poole or hichester.
CRUISING
Both marinas offer a great starting location for a leisurely cruise to the Solent or for a break in Poole or Chichester. Southampton’s water itself offers safe, sheltered sailing while the Hamble and Itchen Rivers are perfect for leisurely exploration. Keen racers have the legendary waters of the Solent on their doorstep, and around the Isle of Wight there are numerous idyllic bays and harbours, perfect for a leisurely weekend sail.
You can easily enjoy the delights of Cowes, which is only a few miles away and is home to some fantastic restaurants and shops with big brand names. Boaters can also enjoy day trips to the historic Portsmouth harbour and gain a fascinating insight into our maritime heritage or visit the outlet shopping centre, Gunwharf Quays. Alternatively, travel west and explore the peaceful waters of Beaulieu River, Lymington and Poole Harbour, the second largest natural harbour in the world. It is
a beautiful place to spend the afternoon, anchored alongside Brownsea Island, reading the Sunday papers and making memories with the children. Those wishing to venture further afield to enjoy the spectacular sailing in the West Country can enjoy berthing at Torquay and Plymouth – both great holiday destinations with plenty to see and do, with coves and sheltered waters along the way that can only be enjoyed by boat. Cherbourg, the Channel Islands and the Brittany coastline are also all within easy cruising distance. There are 255 berths at Shamrock Quay as well as extensive shoreside facilities

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES THE east coast’s largest independently owned marina, Suffolk Yacht Harbour, has completed its new amenities project. The building was designed by architects Wincer Kievenaar and has been finished to the highest specification, putting them amongst the most exclusive marina facilities in the UK. SYH managing director Jonathan Dyke said: “Whilst there are many fantastic marinas on the east coast, it is important that we attract visitors from the south coast and further afield. The facilities are part of our ongoing investment plan to ensure we offer a consistently high quality service to berth-holders and new marina users.” Craig Western, director at Wincer Kievenaar, added: “The original brief, simply put, was to raise the bar of UK yachting facilities to a standard that would not be out of place in a spa hotel.” The building has been designed to be both contemporary and practical, with individual wet and dry areas and underfloor
heating. Vaulted ceilings were constructed to allow maximum light and ventilation. Every detail has been considered; from heated mirrors to heated seats in the shower cubicles and an ultra-efficient heat recovery extraction system, which removes steam but does not reduce the room temperature. Located on the River Orwell at Levington, Suffolk, the marina is well connected by the A14 between Felixstowe and Ipswich and is accessible by sea at all states of the tide. LADY M DROPS IN AT WHITEHAVEN MORE BERTHS IN CYPRUS
MARINA staff at Whitehaven Marina were thrilled to welcome superyacht Lady M when she visited the marina last month on a tour of the Irish Sea and the Western Isles of Scotland. At 65m in length and 9.5m wide Lady M is far too long to fit through the sealock under normal conditions, so the marina staff lowered the sea level in the marina to allow both sets of gates to be opened and let the vessel through on free flow. Whitehaven sealock is 30m long and 13m wide; with only a couple of metres leeway the captain expertly manoeuvred through the lock before swinging round to the berth on Sugar Tongue. Lady M’s owner and his family enjoyed a fantastic day out exploring the Lake District. The crew were really impressed with the marina and all of them said that they wished they had planned to stay a few more days. She certainly attracted a few onlookers from Whitehaven
town. Tony Taylor, Marina Supervisor, estimated that around 2,500 came down to see her. He said: “Lots of people were surprised to see such a large vessel on the Sugar Tongue when they woke up this morning and could not work out how we got it in.” A Whitehaven berth holder also commented: “It is easy to forget how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world and in a town with such a lovely setting and history. Why wouldn’t people want to visit?” Marina Manager Simone Morgan added: “We are fully equipped to deal with vessels like Lady M at Whitehaven Marina and we look forward to welcoming more.” Lady M is a PJ 210, flagship in Palmer Johnson’s Sport Yacht series, built in the US. This 720-gross ton yacht is capable of going from zero to 28-plus knots in one minute, 28 seconds. www.whitehavenmarina.co.uk
CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF
MDL Marinas and Ocean Youth Trust South are celebrating 30 years of partnership with the maiden voyage of the Trust’s new sail training vessel, Prolific. Young sailors from across the south of England took part in the intensive voyage, which included six inspirational young people who were chosen as winners of MDL Marinas’ annual Sail Training Awards. OYT South is a Hampshire-based charity, which specialises in using an ‘Adventure Under Sail’ concept to help young people develop confidence and the essential problem solving skills needed to succeed in life. MDL Marinas and OYT first came together in 1987 to create the Sail Training Awards, which recognise the outstanding efforts of young people who have faced exceptional challenges, or have gone above and beyond to support others. This year’s MDL winners included George Hopwood, Ciaran Robinson and
Alexandra Corrigan, all from Hampshire; Adam Gianfrancesco from Surrey and Rachel Mosley from Torquay. The maiden voyage of Prolific saw 11 young people take to the Solent for a rigorous four-day sailing trip. Starting from MDL’s Ocean Village Marina the team made their way down to Dartmouth, being taught along the way how to sail the vessel, before circling back along the coast. Adrien Burnand, Head of Marketing at MDL Marinas, said: “Over the last 30 years, the MDL sponsored Sail Training Awards have provided over 150 young people the opportunity to experience a trip on board John Laing, Prolific’s predecessor, something which has been life-changing for some of our past winners. “We are proud to continue to support OYT South with Prolific and the important work that it carries out.” www.oytsouth.org/charity.asp
THE Yacht Harbour Association’s International Marina of the Year 2017, Karpaz Gate Marina, has reported a 30 per cent increase in berthing enquiries following January’s award win. It is a great base for people to explore the historic North Cyprus region with its ancient castles and abbeys, vibrant culture and exotic cuisine. The marina offers a range of packages for boat owners including free lift out and antifouling, berthing discounts, flexible contracts and a free special care package. In May the marina welcomed its first mega yacht of the 2017 season, the 56m Queen Mavia. After receiving TYHA 5 Gold Anchor status in 2013 and this year’s award of International Marina of the Year 2017, one
customer explained: “The marina staff are most welcoming and extremely helpful. The facilities are at the highest level possible and very modern. There is an excellent restaurant, amazing beach club with a swimming pool, sandy beach and bar with very friendly staff. “The marina is located in one of the most beautiful spots in Cyprus, in the heart of a nature reserve. Karpaz Gate is a five star marina with the lowest price in the Mediterranean.” Karpaz Gate Marina has 300 berths and the capability to accommodate up to 60m vessels, a beach club with infinity pool, water sports centre and a restaurant called Hemingway’s. +90 533 833 7878 / info@karpazbay.com / www.karpazbay.com

HAMBLE’S NEW TRAVEL HOIST DOCK
WALCON Marine has just completed the replacement of a travel hoist dock at Hamble Yacht Services near Southampton. The project required the demolition and removal
of the old dock, the driving of new piles, the fabrication and installation of new steel runway beams followed by filling them with concrete. Working schedules had to be devised so as to make best use of the tides. With over 50 years of experience in this field, Walcon has a lot of expertise in working over water, and its clients also benefit from its waterside facility on Southampton Water that enables it to prepare its materials and equipment off-site and then deliver them by water. Walcon’s three-strong fleet of barges were able to bring in all the equipment and supplies. With the shore space at HYS largely taken up by yachts ashore for the winter, materials and equipment could be stored
afloat. The Walcon Wizard, together with its piling rig, removed the old piles and installed the new ones We are very pleased with this project,” said Walcon Managing Director James Walters. “Bertie Bickett and his team at HYS could not have been more helpful, and Tony Mayhew at civil engineering consultants Mayhew Callum Ltd provided valuable support to both sides. This new travel hoist dock will serve HYS and its clients for many years to come.” In recent years Walcon Marine has also built travel hoists for Lymington Yacht Haven, Cowes Harbour Commissioners and ABP Fleetwood. DUEL ON THE WATER
Here is what you need to know about match racing, how it can complement yo r eet ra g a ho to get o e Images: Harry Bowerman MATCH racing is often regarded as the ‘purest form of racing’, with two identical boats racing against each other in an exciting, challenging and fast-paced format. With just one boat to beat, boat handing and tactical nous are key to success. Whilst the leader uses blocking techniques to hold their rival back, the trailing boat constantly looks to escape the grasp of the leader and pass ahead. Umpired racing means the winner is decided instantly on the water rather than in the protest room. This one-on-one duel is a game of tactics and strategy with only one winner. The format of match racing events varies depending on the number of competitors and the organiser’s decision, but the most common format is to sail a round robin where each team sails against everyone else followed by knock-out stages to ultimately crown a winner.

TACTICAL KNOWLEDGE
ALL AT SEA AUGUST 2012
Anyone who has raced will have battled in what is essentially a match race, as you look to break free from another boat, be it for a race position or championship glory. Perhaps the battle is for the optimum position on the startline, the inside track round a mark or to beat a rival. Yet ultimately the boat with match racing skill and experience will most likely triumph as they pull tricks out of the bag. Match racing is the perfect platform to hone tactical skills, particularly around attack and defence, which can be translated into a fleet racing environment.

GETTING INVOLVED
Whilst the America’s Cup is the most renowned match racing event, there are many opportunities to get involved at all levels and on your doorstep. The RYA run the ever-popular Winter Match Racing series, which is open to all British teams and is held annually at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. With the added benefit of both competition and training, coaches and a full empire team at every event, it is the perfect opportunity to try out match racing for the first time. For the more confident, there are annual Youth, University and Women’s championships, as well as the National Match Racing Series, which has been the first step towards elite international racing for today’s leading world and British match racers such as Ian Williams and Lucy MacGregor. www.rya.org.uk/racing/keelboatracing/match-racing/Pages/hub.aspx

CLOUDY BAY COMES TO COWES
From South Island, New Zealand to the Isle of Wight Round the Island Race comes Cloudy Bay, dubbed ‘the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world’. Sailing folk will know of New Zealand as a source of world-class yacht racing skippers and crew from Round the World, One Ton and America’s Cup races. Not quite so well known are the high quality wines produced in the Marlborough region in the northeast of South Island. In a neat piece of serendipity, Cloudy Bay is the presenting sponsoring of this year’s Round the Island Race on 1 July. It is a great opportunity to discover more about the distinct characteristics of NZ wines. The country is a relatively small wine producer but the quality is universally acclaimed. The ‘terroir’ is important. 75 per cent of NZ’s wine growing
DARK & STORMY IN BERMUDA
Meantime, the America’s Cup Match starts this month on 17 June. Goslings Black Seal Bermuda dark rum has been the official rum of the Cup and the Louis Vuitton series since 2016. Goslings is Bermuda’s oldest commercial company, founded in 1806 by Englishman James Gosling and is still in family ownership. Black Seal rum and their own ginger beer make the famous Dark & Stormy cocktail, which is globally trademarked to Goslings. “If it’s not Gosling’s rum it isn’t a Dark & Stormy,” they proclaim. It is a traditional dark rum with intricate hints of butterscotch, vanilla and caramel and listed by Waitrose at £24 per 70cl bottle at 40 per cent abv. If you were not the lucky winner of a year’s supply of Goslings rum in April’s All at Sea, it is certainly worth trying to get into the spirit of Bermuda’s main event.

£9 or Coolwater Bay Sauvignon Blanc at £8, both at Sainsbury’s. At Aldi, from their Exquisite Collection range, try Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc £5.89 or Freemans Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2016 at £7.49. They have a very drinkable Pinot Noir at £6.99 but it is quite light and the typical NZ earthiness on the palate is subtle rather than dominant.

and production is squeezed into the Marlborough region (named after English general John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough). Here the summers are bright and the nights cool, creating a long grape-growing season. The vines are planted in ancient alluvial soil which generates the cool climate style and fruit-intense flavours that characterise typical NZ wines. Cloudy Bay itself was named by Captain Cook in 1770 after the muddy water, not the sky. The Cloudy Bay winery was founded in 1983, the first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc was released in 1985 and it became available in the UK in 1996. The winery produces several wine styles but will focus on its Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir for this year’s Round the Island Race. The Sauvignon Blanc is famous for its intense aromatic tropical fruit and herbaceous flavours and gooseberry nose, a distinctive profile for what many wine critics say is the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. The Pinot Noir, aged in French oak barrels delivering intense fruit taste and nose, is classic NZ style. NZ wines now account for six per cent of the UK market, up from one per cent 10 years ago. In general NZ wines are all premium quality, mostly in the £15 to £20 a bottle range. At Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is priced at £21 and the Pinot Noir at Majestic is £29.70 a bottle. But there are other brands and other ‘Bays’ from the same region at single digit prices to gain insight to the NZ wine experience. Try Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc at
