DUCHESS AT THE HELM ALL AT SEA JUNE 2016 - FOR MORE NEWS EVERY DAY GO TO WWW.ALLATSEA.CO.UK

FROM PAGE ONE: Sir Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup challenger Land Rover BAR hosted a visit at their Portsmouth home from Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge. The Duchess joined Land Rover BAR Team Principal and Skipper Ainslie and Sir Keith Mills, Chairman of the 1851 Trust, to conduct the official opening of the team’s interactive ‘Tech Deck’ Education Centre. The Tech Deck offers a unique behindthe-scenes experience with hands-on interactive exhibits, enabling young people to get close to the boats, team and technologies in development that will allow the team to fly faster and sail smarter. The Tech Deck is unusual amongst educational resource centres as it is based at the home of a working professional sports team. Developed for Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum, the aim is to foster and ignite young people’s interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and aims to inspire students to continue on to careers in these essential fields. The Duchess also took ‘flight’ with the team on-board their test boat T1 – a foiling AC45 catamaran – taking control and steering the boat out on the race

3

course for the forthcoming Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth event from 22 - 24 July. Ainslie said: “It was fantastic to take our Royal Patron on-board T1 during our training session on the Solent today. We gave her the helm and we were flying along at 33 knots, out on the ACWS Portsmouth race course. You can tell she has done a lot of sailing, she was a natural on-board.” The Duchess also launched the 1851 Trust’s 2016 sailing programme. The 1851 Trust, affiliate charity of Land Rover BAR, has partnered with two sailing charities, the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation and UKSA, to give 3,000 young people from the Portsmouth and Solent area the chance to experience sailing and the benefits and opportunities it can bring. The Portsmouth Sailing Project, delivered by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation and co-funded by Travis Perkins, will see 1,000 young people aged 9-13 in the Portsmouth area get out on the water for the first time, and provide the opportunity for many of those participants to continue in the sport. The Go Sail project, delivered by UKSA and funded by Sport England, will enable 2,000 14-16 years olds from Solent schools to have their first taste of sailing. ROUND THE ISLAND RACE EXTENDED THIS year competitors will have an extra 30 minutes to complete the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. Race organisers at the Island Sailing Club in Cowes have taken the unusual decision to amend the finish time of this year’s Round the Island Race to help alleviate any concerns competitors may have about being able to complete the race within the usual time limit of 2200hrs. With a later first start time of 0830 the finish deadline has been extended by 30 minutes to 2230. Turn to page 24 to read our race preview.

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde

I LOVE the photos of the Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to Land Rover BAR in Portsmouth. I know her ‘people’ will tell her which events she will attend, but the look of delight on her face when she was with the children and, of course, out on the water with Sir Ben Ainslie is unquestionably real. She clearly enjoys sailing and, along with other royals such as the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal, is a great supporter of this fantastic sport. I wonder if Kate would be tempted to take part in a race like the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race? If you would like to take part this year do not forget that standard entries to compete in the 2016 race close at midnight on 18 June. In this month’s news pages you will read that this year’s race competitors are being given an extra 30 minutes to complete the course due to a later start time. For lots more Round the Island Race information turn to page 24 for our preview guide. One person who knows all about this race is All at Sea columnist Lizzy Foreman. An experienced racer, last year she took part in the Round the Island Race and solo transatlantic yacht race, the Mini Transat. What better person to give us an insight into the world of racing. This month Lizzy kicks off a new series looking at the often forgotten challenges these men and women face. If you have ever wondered how, for example, the Volvo Ocean Race

19 22 34 38

sailors manage their sleep while battling the world’s oceans read Lizzy’s fascinating article. Another inspirational female sailor is Dee Caffari, the first woman to sail single-handedly and non-stop around the world ‘the wrong way’. As well as sharing her experiences and upcoming challenges with us on page 19, Dee is also in the news this month with the announcement that she has become a brand ambassador for Sunsail, the world’s largest sailing company. Take a look at this month’s boating holidays on page 26 for lots of getaway ideas for this month and into the summer. There are many fabulous Mediterranean holidays from a Croatian flotilla to a short break on a catamaran. Perhaps your holidays this year even involve a trip over to Brazil to support Team GB in the Olympic Games in August. The final four sailors who will take to the water for Team GB at Rio have been announced. Read all about them on page 20. The 15-strong team can now concentrate on their preparations for the big event, but not before this month’s Sailing World Cup, Weymouth and Portland. If you can show your support the team would love to see you there. Then, of course, there is the America’s Cup World Series in Portsmouth next month. Exciting times… Jane Hyde editor@allatsea.co.uk

HOLIDAY GIANT SELLS SPECIALIST GROUP

TUI, owner of Thomson and First Choice, plans to sell its Specialist Group as part of an initiative to streamline its business and focus on package holidays and cruise offerings. Last year Tui sold the hotel booking website LateRooms and has agreed a €1.2bn deal to sell its Hotelbeds group. The Specialist Group, which will be renamed Travelopia, contains a portfolio of more than 50 specialist travel brands,

many based in the UK. They include Sunsail, Le Boat and The Moorings. Only Crystal Ski and Thomson Lakes and Mountains are excluded from the sale, and they will be integrated into Tui’s business. Marion Telsnig at Sunsail said: “This sale is an excellent opportunity for us to take Sunsail forward through our already growing fleet and expanding our holiday choices further for our customers. We are

all confident that this is a positive move for Sunsail. And, of course, all existing and future bookings are secure, as we are still presently part of TUI.” It is thought the sale, expected to be completed between September and April, will bring further funding and growth to Travelopia. Turn to page 12 to read about Sunsail’s new ambassador.

EMIRATES Team New Zealand retained its overall lead in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series by winning the New York event. The spectators got the action they wanted from Super Sunday, but Land Rover BAR did not get the result that they had hoped for. At the start of the final race Emirates Team New Zealand crewman Blair Tuke had to jump in the water to unhook the starting buoy’s anchor line from the catamaran’s rudder. Making matters worse, the port hull was punctured by the buoy and water was leaking into the hull throughout the race. The Kiwi crew’s luck came full circle on the next-to-last leg. They rounded the last windward mark in fifth place, about 42 seconds behind leading SoftBank Team Japan. But as all the crews began the downwind leg they sailed into a patch of no wind that engulfed the course. As the leg was perpendicular to the southerly flowing current, some of the crews were being swept over the course boundary. Land Rover BAR, Groupama Team France and SoftBank Team Japan were all penalised for crossing the boundary in the current. The Kiwis, further behind, held in the middle of the course and when the wind filled in the Kiwis took off on their hydrofoils at 16 to 20 knots. They went on to win the race and the series. Land Rover BAR had to settle for fifth in that final race and fifth in the event – a disappointing result after a succession of brilliant starts demonstrated how the team has worked on the single area of weakness during their event win in Oman. Ben Ainslie, Skipper and Team Principal, said: “It is hard to describe racing in those conditions. It was fantastic to see so many

people out supporting the event. The last two races, the guy in last place at the penultimate mark, won the race on the penultimate leg. “So as competitors that is tough to deal with, but that is the game. We knew it would be like that going into this event, and you roll the dice and see which side of it you come out. Unfortunately it did not go well for us today, so the guys are frustrated. I think we sailed the boat really well, and did everything just about as good as we could, but it just did not fall our way.” The British team was not short of celebrity support. Big names from the world of film, television and business joined Land Rover BAR under the iconic Manhattan skyline. Hollywood actors, Liam Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, Game of Thrones actor Alfie Allen and business tycoon, Richard Branson all joined Sir Ben Ainslie and his team on

board Land Rover BAR’s flying catamaran. The team now head to Chicago on 11 and 12 June to race on Lake Michigan in the hope to chase down second place Oracle Team USA and leaders Emirates Team New Zealand. LandRoverBAR.com #BringTheCupHome

CHANNEL RESCUE - TWO CHARGED

HMS NAMUR IN COMMAND

‘Command of the Oceans’, a new permanent display at The Historic Dockyard Chatham, opened on 27 May. It is built around the 260-year old skeleton of HMS Namur, preserved where she was discovered and still lies. Namur is a famous 18th century British warship whose battle honours surpass those of HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship at Trafalgar. The Namur was discovered by chance in 1995 when routine conservation work on the Dockyard’s Wheelwrights’ Shop led to the astonishing discovery. The timbers of the 18th century warship had lain hidden and undisturbed under the floor for over two centuries. Over the past 20 years the ship’s timbers have been carefully preserved and the stories of this influential ship researched and brought together for the first time. HMS Namur’s 47-year service encompassed three major wars including the Seven Years’ War, Napoleonic Wars and nine fleet actions. She was one of the

principal ships to fight in all key battles of the golden period of the Age of Sail. TV Historian Dan Snow describes her as: “The ship that defines this course of British history.” The Namur also featured across 18th and 19th century history and literature – Jane Austen’s brother was her Captain. His nautical experiences informed the naval characters in Mansfield Park and Persuasion. Olaudah Equiano, one of the age’s leading and most celebrated anti-slavery campaigners was a ‘Powder Monkey’ on the Namur. He wrote one of the only accounts at that time of life below the waterline. The Namur’s remains are on display with personal items and objects from the Invincible, an 18th century French warship captured by the Royal Navy in 1747, whose collection also goes on show for the first time. Together, they form the centrepiece for the ‘Command of the Oceans’ galleries at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. www.thedockyard.co.uk/prices

Two British men have been charged with immigration offences after an inflatable boat with 18 Albanians on board was rescued late at night off the Kent coast on 28 May. The men appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court and were remanded in custody to Maidstone Crown Court on 27 June. The coastguard, RNLI and two Border Force boats were involved in the rescue after the rigid-hulled inflatable got into difficulties off the coast of Dymchurch. Two British men were also rescued alongside the Albanians. They were handed to Border Force officers. Two children were among those on board. A similar inflatable boat was later discovered on the beach in Dymchurch. Damian Collins, Conservative MP for Folkestone and Hythe, said authorities must be “alert to an increased risk” of people trying to illegally get into the UK on small boats.

Nao Victoria to make first uk visit this summer AN exact replica of the first ship to sail around the world is making its first visit to the UK this summer. Berthing in Plymouth’s historic Sutton Harbour, the Nao Victoria arrives on 28 July, a day before the fourday Sutton Harbour Classic Boat Rally at which she will be a special guest, and will stay until 21 August. The ship was built in 1992 and is the only replica of the famous original, which became the first vessel to successfully circumnavigate the globe in 1522 as part of Magellan’s Expedition. The Spanish carrack set sail from Seville on 10 August, 1519 as one of five ships in the expedition, which aimed to find a new westbound route to reach the ‘Spice Islands’ - now known as Indonesia. Three years on, the Victoria was the only ship to return to Spain, its remaining 18-man crew unaware they had completed the first ever roundthe-world voyage in the process. The 27m long, three-masted replica is an exact copy of the 16th century original with four decks, 290 square metres of sail and a main beam measuring 6.7 metres. Managed by the Fundacion Nao Victoria, whose main goal is to educate people about maritime history, the replica has undertaken a world tour visiting American and Northern Europe. The boat is used as an exhibition vessel, acting as a self-contained museum on

board which visitors could learn more about the era of the explorers. Visitors will be able to board the Nao Victoria. Tickets will cost £4 for adults, £2 for children under 11 and entry is free for children under five. www.fundacionnaovictoria.org www.visitsuttonharbour.co.uk

SWANWICK’S MANAGER Nicola Walsh has been appointed Marina Manager at Premier’s Swanwick Marina. In addition to bringing a wealth of experience to the management team, Nicola will be responsible for managing the marina through a redevelopment that it is hoped will position it as Premier’s flagship marina. All at Sea will be chatting to Nicola in a future issue.

EXTREME WIND FOR LAND ROVER BAR WINNING the America’s Cup will be about the technology behind the teams as well as their performance on the water. Even the most casual observer can see that the competition has changed beyond recognition. The new boats are faster, more extreme and much more athletic. The foiling multihulls now demand sailors with endurance sport capabilities, and with speeds up to five times quicker than the previous monohull designs the sailors need to be better protected from the extreme conditions. All this requires a completely different approach to the clothing worn. Although they wear a wetsuit, helmets and body armour have been added with spinal

boards to reduce impact injuries, and quick release knives and spare air in case of a capsize. All this equipment could end up very bulky and awkward, but the speed and athleticism of the new boats means that aerodynamics and freedom of movement are even more important than before. Land Rover BAR Sailor Nick Hutton is working with official supplier Henri Lloyd and technical supplier Spinlock to make sure that the team gets the best kit possible. One of the results is a new Spinlock lifejacket, the BAR T2 Personal Floatation Device, that will be combined with Henri Lloyd technical apparel. Nick said: “We started with a

traditional life jacket and the first aim was to improve the aerodynamics. What we have done to reduce the drag is to weld the rash vest material onto the lifejacket to eliminate any air gaps and maximise the aerodynamic efficiency as much as possible. “Then we reduced the foam so it was just above the amount required by the rules to keep the bulk to a minimum, integrating and recessing all the equipment to be as low profile and aerodynamic as possible.” The innovation and technology partnership with Jaguar Land Rover meant that the team then had the opportunity to test the new equipment in a wind tunnel normally used for automotive research.

SPINNING TOP

Spinlock has won a top business award, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, for its part in boosting the country’s international trade. Despite its relatively small staff of just 50 employees, the Isle of Wight-based company has become the world’s top brand for rope holding technology and personal safety. www.spinlock.co.uk 132x164 QuarterPage.qxp_Layout 1 11/03/2016 16:29 Pageand 1 Leigh McMillan testing the aerodynamic properties of their sailing kit. Land Rover BAR’s Chief Technology Officer Andy Claughton said: “In the wind tunnel we were able to do a lot of testing on the equipment that the sailors wear. What we are trying to do is to optimise that as an aerodynamic package.” When combined with the Henri Lloyd technical apparel the new gear can be worn comfortably in any temperature – and there is quite a range of temperature from winter training in Portsmouth to racing in Bermuda in June. FIRST WHITBREAD CHAMPION DIES 1973-74 Whitbread Round the World Race winning skipper of Sayula II, Ramon Carlin. Image: Ian Roman /Volvo Ocean Race

RAMÓN Carlín, the ‘weekend sailor’ who upset the odds to become the winner of the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973 – 74, has died in Mexico City at the age of 92. Carlín was a complete unknown in the sport when he entered the event, which later became the Volvo Ocean Race. He assembled a crew of good, but unheralded, sailors before upsetting some of the era’s leading names of offshore sailing, including Britain’s Chay Blyth, by winning with his Swan 65, Sayula II. Ramon did not insure Sayula II for the race, but saved on the premium to cover necessary repairs. The crew only discovered this as they approached the finish with only 14 of the 19 strands of the forestay still intact. After the race, in which three rival sailors died in the 19-strong fleet, Carlín returned home to a presidential reception and became Mexico’s most famous yachtsman. “The winning difference was my boat and that crew,” Carlín recounted later. “We had no time to train. My plan was to get to know the crew and teach them how to manage the boat during the first leg, but all of them turned out to be very good.”

Skipper Ramon Carlin, with the crew of Sayula II, celebrating their victory in the first Whitbread Round the World Race 1973-74. Personal Archive Bernardo Arsuaga

Right to the end of his long life Carlín delighted in recounting his triumph, which was commemorated in a successful movie last year, The Weekend Sailor, directed by his countryman, Bernardo Arsuaga. Carlín also told how his team were mocked in the English media prior to the start in September 1973, portrayed as lazy Mexicans with big sombreros and completely unprepared for the huge round-the world challenge ahead.

A ROYAL OPENING THE Princess Royal, Patron of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, has officially opened the club’s new pontoons. They provide berthing for up to 10 yachts, 15 RIBs and 75 dinghies and replace a previous installation and make more efficient use of the space. With 2,400 members and an active racing programme, the club and its pontoons get intensive use throughout much of the year.

Hollywood History floats on tHe tHames Judith R, a beautifully preserved and restored 1935 luxury commuter yacht, is now floating on the River thames and preparing for charter. Originally commissioned for Barney Balaban, President of Paramount Pictures, the boat is steeped in hollywood history. Judith R was named after Balaban’s daughter, a movie star who grew up amongst the glitterati of the American movie world of the 1940s and ‘50s. Judith was Matron of honour for Grace Kelly, dated Montgomery Clift, was married to Golden Globe winner tony Franciosa and counted Rosemary Clooney, harry Belafonte and Sammy davis Jr. among her friends. Featured in film and likely to have entertained many of

the Balabans’ contemporaries, including Audrey hepburn and humphrey Bogart, the Art deco yacht has been restored to its original form, providing a glamorous step back to its original era. Susanne and david Williams discovered the boat on Chesapeake Bay in Maryland in 2004. She had retained most of her originality but was barely afloat when they found her. She was taken to Wootten’s boatyard in Cookham – where Kenneth Grahame wrote Wind in the Willows. the complete restoration took place over a decade and was almost certainly the biggest carried out on the River thames for more than 30 years. www.judithr.co.uk

Studland Classic Canvas Hoodie

We featured Maude & Fox’s handmade British outerwear earlier in the year and think their clothes would put a smile on any dad's face this Father’s Day. This stylish hoodie would look good when dad is dining out harbour side or enjoying a cool summer evening. It is made in tough navy Explorers Canvas. The blue anti-pile fleece lining will keep the wind at bay and because it is cut low at the back it will keep those draughts out too. £168 www.maudeandfox.com

Hats off to summer

With summer approaching a sun hat will make the perfect Father’s Day gift. Cotswold Outdoor have many to choose from, so it is just a matter of finding the perfect one for your dad. We particularly like the £25 NosiLife Outback Hat, which is available in two colours, and the £65 T3 Cotton Duck Hat (pictured). www.cotswoldoutdoor.com

For a versatile shirt for dad to wear during a relaxed day by the water here is the Sentry Shirt. The Freedom Range has been designed and developed by Henri Lloyd to be the ultimate in cruising apparel. Ideal for dads who love to spend time on the water, they are 100 per cent waterproof, windproof and highly breathable. The jackets in the range have the Optivision hi-vis hood system with great peripheral vision while the high cut collars with spume visors provide full face protection. Back in April we brought you news of Chatham’s British collection for men called Made in Britain. With four styles, each offered in a choice of colourways and all named after British Prime Ministers (Churchill, Peel, Pitt and Balfour), we were interested to try them out. We received a pair of Churchill Lace Up Boat Shoes. They are the rather brighter Blue/Taupe colour, but if you like something a little more subtle there is a Dark Brown/Blue option. Not only do they look great but they are well made too with Kudu leather.

High Coast Hoodie

the brown polarised category two lenses offer contrast and definition. Lastly, the category zero lenses filter blue light to improve vision on dull days. The Toledo style features a windshield gasket and adjustable side arms. £39.95 www.rapideyewear.co.uk

Yes, they look good quality with a classic boat shoe appeal and trendy Made in Britain swing tag, but comfort is essential. We were interested to see how effective the new sole - featuring a channel embedded with memory foam to give the foot bed support – performed. The shoes were subjected to considerable outdoor activity and faired exceptionally well. They scored highly in terms of comfort. While the colour might not be to everybody’s taste, there is no doubt any dad would be happy to wear a pair this summer. £139 www.chatham.co.uk

This High Coast Hoodie by Fjällräven is an ideal accompaniment for those lazy spring and summer evenings as the sun dips on the horizon. Whilst being extremely lightweight, it also has excellent wicking properties and is quick drying, so those unexpected showers will not catch dad out. It can be used as a mid-layer or worn next to the skin for milder conditions. It also has a cosy hood for a little extra warmth when needed. Colours: Grey, Navy £80 www.cotswoldoutdoor.com

RYA FOCUS

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2016

The RYA covers all forms of boating, including dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sports boats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and narrowboats, and personal watercraft.

BY EMMA SLATER

Staying on Trx

Additional features for 2106 The latest version of RYA SafeTrx has a number of additional enhancements to make it simpler to use: ■ Manage your profile, vessel, checklist and emergency contact information within the app ■ Access key features quickly using the redesigned app navigation menu ■ Keep a clean record of trips in Trip History with the option to delete individual trips on the app

RYA SafeTrx, the tried and trusted mobile vessel tracking solution, is about to get even better with a host of new features this summer.

Activate an emergency call at any time even without an active trip

Planning ■ Find popular nearby ports and contact details ■ Access VHF channel information for your planned route ■ Get familiar with lifeboat station locations for your planned route ■ Check UK Met Office sea area forecasts for your waypoints and destination ■ Check daily tidal information through the UKHO Admiralty EasyTide service Preparation and safety checks Whether you are on or offline the Safety Information section provides information on:

USING iPhone and Android smartphone technology the RYA SafeTrx tracking and alert system is easily accessible and simple to use. Whilst components of the GMDSS system remain the preferred means for communication and distress alerting, RYA SafeTrx is a useful backup and particularly helpful for those on the many small craft, such as RIBs and dinghies, that do not have the ability to fit or carry standard GMDSS equipment. From your smartphone you can enter your journey details and set off knowing that should you not return by the time given, a nominated emergency contact will be alerted and advised to initiate appropriate action. When an emergency contact calls HM Coastguard about an overdue trip they have access to your location and SafeTrx trip data through a secure SafeTrx server. Since the app periodically sends your location data back to the RYA’s servers the Coastguard’s response team can get help directly to you, and quickly. During a search and rescue incident the UK coastguard collects vital information about the people and vessels involved. When did they set off? Where were they going? When were they due back? What was their last known location? These are all vital pieces of the puzzle and the RYA SafeTrx app helps to provide this information, meaning that valuable time is not lost.

■ Levels of Buoyancy for Personal Flotation Devices ■ Recommended and mandatory equipment for UK Pleasure Vessels ■ Life Saving Signals ■ SOLAS Regulations for Pleasure Craft ■ New targeted equipment and safety checklists for all types of water craft help you prepare for going on the water. Set up your own checklists directly from the app ■ Familiarise yourself with IALA Region A buoyage

The RYA SafeTrx homepage

Communications ■ Find the nearest VHF channels while out on the water based on your current location ■ Check the International Maritime Signal flags used to communicate with other vessels ■ Receive safety messages and important information through the RYA SafeTrx app and SMS messages ■ Activate an emergency call at any time even without an active trip. When in UK waters, the app will automatically determine your location and direct the call to the UK emergency services RYA members and registered users who download the app also benefit from a unique feature – performance analytics. Track Only mode enables boaters to analyse their speed and performance on the water when fine-tuning while racing or cruising. The 2016 RYA SafeTrx promotes enjoyable boating - a safe mindset and good practice. Not just a mobile vessel tracking application, it is a practical tool that equips you with the knowledge to be safer at sea. RYA SafeTrx is a widely accessible tool that any boater can use when going out on the water. While it is not intended to replace GMDSS, EPIRB, PLB, AIS or the Coastguard administered CG66, it is especially useful for those who use smaller boats and those who do not have tracking and alerting devices on their boats. RYA SafeTrx is free to download from Apple’s App Store and the Google Play store. Once downloaded boaters can run unlimited free trips. RYA SafeTrx app is available now: www.rya.org.uk/go/safetrx Image: Plumpton Photos

DEVELOPMENT TEAM

The establishment of a European SafeTrx User Group has allowed the development team to work directly with those that are providing life-saving services at sea. The RYA works closely with members of the User Group to directly influence the features and design of SafeTrx, with feedback facilitated through onsite workshops, conference calls and via a dedicated project management portal. The 2016 application marks a departure from previous versions and RYA SafeTrx 2016 is a significant upgrade offering functional enhancements to the existing platform.

Keeping in touch ■ RYA SafeTrx still offers the ability to file a Sail Plan with the Maritime Coastguard Agency. Sail Plan records a starting point, a destination and an estimated time of arrival. It sends SMS messages to your emergency contact(s) if you exceed your ETA

■ Quickly start recording using the Track Only mode to begin tracking at a touch of a button. Change the recording interval to save on battery consumption when your tracking is in progress. Choose from continuous, 10 minute or 30 recording intervals. Review performance analytics after recording your track

His revelatory private musings illuminate the world of Edwardian high society and the hardships of the naval conflict. This new edition, compiled by Alexander’s descendant Richard Hallam and screenwriter and editor Mark Benyon, includes much previously unseen material.

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH DEE CAFFARI MBE WHO BECAME THE FIRST WOMAN TO SAIL SINGLE-HANDEDLY AND NON-STOP AROUND THE WORLD AGAINST THE PREVAILING WINDS AND CURRENTS IN 2006. an amazing experience. But getting a squad of 14 women to come together as a high performance team in the Volvo Ocean Race was a challenge. Although this was not my challenge I feel I learnt a great deal by being part of it.

THIS MONTH YOU ARE TAKING ON THE THREE PEAKS YACHT RACE FOR SAIL 4 CANCER. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THIS EVENT?

This multi-discipline event has been on my to do list for a while and this year I get the opportunity to do it whilst supporting Sail 4 Cancer, a charity I am an Ambassador for. The event itself is tough and I am joined by meteorologist and Volvo Ocean Race navigator Libby Greenhalgh to help me sail the course competitively. When we arrive in each location two members of the team must run up one of the highest peaks in the UK. We will sail along some amazing coastline, with hazardous tidal gates to negotiate, and our runners will be able to take in the breathtaking scenery of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis. I am looking forward to it and hope we have some good weather to enjoy the sailing.

WHAT ARE YOUR PREPARATIONS FOR THE THREE PEAKS YACHT RACE?

Image: Mark Lloyd

WHEN DID YOU START SAILING?

I came to the sport late. I tried sailing when I was at University and loved it. I trained and became a dinghy instructor and did my Yachtmaster theory at night school. It was only after teaching for five years that I made a career change, completed all my qualifications at UKSA and I really started sailing.

YOU HAVE COMPLETED SEVERAL SINGLE-HANDED RACES. WHAT IS THE ATTRACTION OF GOING SOLO?

The attraction is that it is all up to you. There is nowhere to hide. Any mistakes are yours as well as all the right things you choose to do. You have to be able to master a number of different skills, not just one aspect of sailing, and I like that all round ability and testing myself.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE PART OF THE ALL WOMEN TEAM SCA IN THE 2014-15 VOLVO OCEAN RACE?

It was an amazing opportunity. We had to bridge a gap of 12 years where women had not been involved in the race. We fulfilled our goal of improving throughout the race and winning the leg into Lorient along with a couple of wins in the in port series. Finishing third overall in the in port races was brilliant. I hope it is the start of more female sailors taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race; that would be an amazing legacy.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST SAILING CHALLENGE SO FAR?

The Vendee Globe will always remain the highlight of my sailing career. By completing the race you join a very special group of people who have had

Much of the preparation for Libby and I is to understand the complex navigation of the route and the hazards along the way. In the meantime our runners are trying to prepare themselves for running close to three marathons up and down steep hills over just a few days. I guess the faster we sail the shorter their recovery and the faster they run the shorter our sleep will be.

WHICH SAILING RACE/RECORD IS TOP OF YOUR ‘TO DO’ LIST?

My to do list is still quite long, but I am lucky to have some big events ticked off. I would still love to take part in the RORC Caribbean 600 and the RORC Middle Sea Race. I must wait another year to do the RORC Caribbean 600 as I am away racing in the Sailing Arabia The Tour this year.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE COMING UP THIS YEAR?

Earlier this year I joined the Oman Sail Women’s team for Sailing Arabia The Tour. We started racing in Dubai and went on to Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Khasab, Sohar and finished in Muscat. I am also doing more sailing closer to home that I hope I can tell you

In 2014, as part of Team SCA taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014/15, Dee secured the Round Britain and Ireland Speed Record for an all-female crewed monohull of 4 days 21 hrs 39 secs. Image: Corinna Halloran about later in the year, and I will be crossing over to the dark side, the world of powerboats, and joining Shelly Jory-Leigh for a very special race later in the year.

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU (PAST OR PRESENT)?

Sir Peter Blake has always been my inspiration. He achieved so much in so many disciplines of the sport as well as having an environmental concern for the rivers and oceans. He managed to inspire a whole country to give him and Team New Zealand support in the America’s Cup. It takes a very special person to be able to do that and we have not seen it since.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH ALL AT SEA’S READERS?

Thank you for reading and I hope I can catch up with everyone again later in the year to share my activities as there is lots coming up. Dee joined the Sailing Arabia The Tour this year. Image: Lloyd

FINAl FOUR teAM GB SAIlORS ANNOUNCeD

The British Olympic Association has announced the final four sailors who will take to the water for Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

All At SeA JUNE 2016

London to Rio is a whopping 5,767 miles

It was the London 1908 Olympic Games that saw sailing begin its unbroken run as an Olympic sport

Team GB has won more Olympic sailing gold medals than any other nation

TEAM GB SAILORS The final four sailors selected are: n Luke Patience, 29 (Men’s 470) n Chris Grube, 31 (Men’s 470) n Dylan Fletcher, 28 (49er) n Alain Sign, 30 (49er) Those previously selected are: n Giles Scott (Finn) n Nick Thompson (Laser) n Alison Young (Laser Radial) n Bryony Shaw (Women’s RS:X) n Nick Dempsey (Men’s RS:X) n Hannah Mills (Women’s 470) n Saskia Clark (Women’s 470) n Charlotte Dobson (49erFX) n Sophie Ainsworth (49erFX) n Ben Saxton (Nacra 17) n Nicola Groves (Nacra 17)

Image: Ocean Images/British Sailing Team

The first group of sailors heading to Rio was announced back in September with further names being added in March. The latest announcement completes the 15-strong sailing line-up that will head to Rio in August. When the statement was made Stephen Park, Team GB Sailing Team Leader and RYA Olympic Manager, said: “We are delighted and proud to complete our Olympic Games line-up for Rio, and congratulate Luke and Chris, Dylan and Alain on their selections for Team GB. “Finalising the Games team is always an exciting moment and allows us to now really focus on the final run-in and what it takes to win medals in the extremely challenging environment that Rio presents.”

2016 CLASSES

Since the 2012 Games the following class changes have taken place: n Women’s (Elliott 6m) and men’s (Star) keelboat events have been eliminated. n Multi-hulls return, represented by the Nacra 17. n Women’s skiff has been added, represented by the 49erFX. These new classes, along with the others already featuring, have already been confirmed for Tokyo 2020. Paralympic sailing classes will not feature in the 2020 Olympic Games. n With the two changes to sailing classes there will be a total of 10 events at Rio 2016.

a challenging time for Luke having been selected back in September and then having to refocus following elliot’s diagnosis. “Chris and Luke can now forge a strong partnership and we wish elliot all the best and hope to see him on the water again soon.”

FINAL FOUR

Luke Patience and Chris Grube will compete in the men’s 470, while Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign complete the Rio squad in the 49er after what turned out to be a close selection battle. For Fletcher, Sign and Grube, Rio 2016 will be their first Olympic outing, with Grube having teamed up with Patience following elliot Willis’s cancer diagnosis at the end of 2015. Luke Patience already has an Olympic medal to his name – a 470 silver he picked up with Stuart Bithell at London 2012. On hearing the news Luke said: “It is still a special day but mixed feelings I suppose because I am combining two campaigns to try and still achieve the same goal. It was wonderful to do this today with Chris and it was wonderful

to do that day with elliot as well. Mixed emotions, but overall I am happy and I cannot wait to hopefully do Queen and country proud. “I hope I can draw on the London experience, and with Chris being a first time Olympian, between us it will keep things grounded. Four years ago I was probably the most excited man with Stuart in front of the camera, but business will be business, the excitement will be the excitement, they will be two separate things. We will do the damage we can do on the water and hopefully with a smile on our face.” The thoughts of Mark england, Team GB’s Chef de Mission for Rio 2016, were also with elliot Willis: “It is great to announce the final four athletes and complete the squad that will sail for Team GB in Rio de Janeiro. It has been

It might only be a few months until the Olympic Games, but it is so important that the selectors get it right and in some classes it has been a very close call as Stephen Park explains: “Dylan and Alain have come through a particularly close selection battle with teammates John Pink and Stuart Bithell and the fast progressing pairing of James Peters and Fynn Sterritt in the 49er class, but will go into their first Games full of passion and enthusiasm,

and with the confidence of being World Championship medallists in the Olympic year.” All the team members will be battling hard to bring home a medal, especially with the team’s past Olympic successes to live up to. Team GB lead the way in sailing at the Olympic Games and sit atop the overall standings with 55 medals accrued since 1986 – including 26 golds.

BRITISH SAILING TEAM FOLLOWING THE BRITISH TEAM ON THE ROAD TO RIO

“What is also great about the Olympics is how much it means to other people – to our friends and families who have supported us for so long, but also to fans of sailing and sport in general” Image: OnEdition

Panning for 49er gold in Rio In this month’s British Sailing Team column, Dylan Fletcher looks forward to his Olympic Games debut as he and Alain Sign earn the nod in the 49er class. can get the best out of that combination IT is a dream come true to be able to say that we will be on the plane to Rio, having been officially selected for Team GB! After a long drive home from the Sailing World Cup Hyeres, Alain and I got the call from our team manager to say that the selectors had made their decision, and we would be going to our first Olympic Games this summer. It took a while to sink in, but it feels absolutely amazing, and we are super excited and so proud to be representing Team GB.

CLOSE TRIALS The 49er trials were incredibly close this time and we did not make the selectors’ lives easy. It was super tight, especially with Pinky [John Pink] and Stu [Bithell]. We are really good mates with them, and we both pushed each other to the end and we are just really happy that we came out on top. Alain and I have been sailing together for nearly 10 years now, we are best mates, so to be going to the Olympic Games with him is really special. We have worked so hard for this and he is the best crew in the world. When we are on our day we are untouchable. We have not had an easy time of it during the trials, but we know we can turn out a podium performance when the chips are down, so hopefully we can bring that to the Games, enjoy it and have a good week.

AGAINST THE KIWIS In the 49er fleet we obviously have a very dominant Kiwi team, who are unbeaten since the previous Games so that will be a difficult hurdle to overcome, but for sure we are aiming for gold and we will see how we get on. We have spent quite a lot of time in Rio. We have quite a good track record over there and we have always just tried to keep our heads down, keep the routines, stick to the processes. It is definitely a tricky venue; you can quite easily have bad days there and not do much wrong. I think the Olympic regatta is going to be a real test of mental toughness during the week. We will put everything into practice and hopefully pull off a great result in August. THE SUPPORTERS What is also great about the Olympics is how much it means to other people – to our friends and families who have supported us for so long, but also to fans of sailing and sport in general who become hooked on and inspired by the Games. That was me, and now I am going to be a part of it. It is quite surreal! We have shipped our Games boat out to Rio so that is pretty exciting. Our main job now is a bit of kit testing and really just trying to tweak everything, maximising the boat and ourselves so we

in August. Before the final run in to Rio, though, we have our home Sailing World Cup regatta in Weymouth and Portland this month, which will be a great opportunity for some of our British supporters to come and experience what Olympic classes racing is all about, and come and see the team who will be representing them this summer. It should be a great event. The National Lottery-funded British Sailing Team is proudly supported by official partners Volvo Car UK, Zhik and Peters & May. ROUND THE ISLAND RACE

The 85th edition of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race takes place on 2 July, and Cowes is looking to welcoming thousands of sailors for another exciting day of racing. Entry checklist Here are the top tips from the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race:

the J.P. Morgan Asset Management round the Island race is one of the largest yacht races in the world attracting competitors from near and far. the boats will line up on the royal Yacht Squadron line in cowes to take on the 50nm course, which will see them head west around the island passing numerous well-known landmarks on the way. organised by the Island Sailing club, it is a huge event to put together with more than 1,700 boats and their crew taking part, plus friends and family waiting at the many vantage points to cheer them on. For some it will be their first competitive race while others have been taking part for many years. In fact alongside novices will be some Image: Paul Wyeth

familiar names from the world of racing. this mix of amateur and professional is one of the exciting aspects of this race. over 60 prizes will be up for grabs during the day and every boat taking part will receive a tankard in recognition of their achievement.

CYRIL’S BIG IDEA

the first round the Island race took place 85 years ago when the Island Sailing club’s Major cyril Windeler put forward the idea of a handicap race around the Isle of Wight that could cater for smaller boats - those in the category five to 25 tons. A 22ft cornish fishing boat ‘Merry conceit’ skippered by Peter Brett went on to win that first race and the gold roman Bowl trophy.

1. read the notice of race – check your boat’s eligibility, ratings, conditions of entry and appropriate sail number. 2. gather your entry details – make sure you have all the relevant information for the entry form and check if you are eligible for a special trophy. 3. Make your entry online – use the online form and do not miss the deadline. 4. complete the crew list - supply a full list of crew members that will be on board during the race by 29 June. 5. read the Sailing Instructions – you will receive these about a week before the race. Also review the general rules by reading the racing rules of Sailing 2013-2016. 6. get your boat ready – as well as checking your boat over thoroughly and even giving it a good clean, check that the letters and number printed on your sails are the same on each sail and match the information you gave on your entry form. 7. check tides and weather - make sure you know what to expect from the tidal streams and check the expected weather conditions. 8. read your safety book – it is very important to read it when it arrives with your Sailing Instructions and again before you go racing. Make sure the crew read it too. 9. have a great race!

Major Windeler had only a few years to wait before he too won the trophy. his winning boat was a seven ton auxiliary cutter ‘Kalliste’ designed by Jack giles. that was in 1939 and was followed by a ban on private, leisure sailing during the war. however, the round the Island race resumed in 1946 under Major Sir Philip hunloke as commodore. the race’s reputation and numbers have grown immensely since those early days. that first race in 1931 had just 25 entrants. now, of course, there are around 16,000 sailors and it is the fourth largest participation sporting event in the uK after the london Marathon and the great north and South runs.

FAMOUS FACES

Amongst the thousands of entrants will be professional sailors and celebrities. Sir Ben Ainslie holds the record for a multihull boat but many other well known names from outside the world of boating have also taken part – and won – over the years. one of the most memorable in the 1970s was Prime Minister edward heath who won the round the Island race four times; three of them in consecutive years in the early 1970s on ‘Morning cloud II’ and Morning cloud III”. As well as famous names there are other stand out competitors from the history of the event. Wendy Ballantine

“I was lucky enough to be on the helm when we rounded the Needles and concentrated on making sure we were on the safe transit to avoid the Varvassi wreck. It is a fabulous feeling and every sailor should helm around this iconic landmark.” Paul Blacknell, Nomad 1

sailed in the 25th, 50th and 75th editions of the event, and 90-year-old Ray Moxley raced his newly built 40’ revolutionary catamaran in 2013. Back on the start line this year is Alex Thomson, currently the only British entry for the next edition of the Vendée Globe, skippering the 2015 IMOCA 60 Hugo Boss. When Alex competed in 2008 he was joined on board by F1 driver Lewis Hamilton (2008, 2014 and current World Champion) and Sir Ben Ainslie.

One of British sailing’s golden girls and part of Team Volvo, Helena Lucas MBE, is returning to the race to skipper a chartered Elan 450 Squire Patton Boggs. Helena made history winning the 2.4mR Paralympic Gold medal at London 2012, becoming the first ever female winner of the male dominated Paralympic class and Britain’s first ever Paralympic sailing gold medallist. She is now continuing on the road to Rio 2016 on a quest for her second gold medal.

WATCHING THE RACE

If you are not taking part this year but would like to show your support or cheer on family and friends there are many viewing points around the island. Check the race website for details of the vantage points and the best times to be at them. They include a number of familiar Isle of Wight locations such as The Needles, St. Catherine’s Point and Ventnor.

THE COURSE

Helena Lucas and her fellow competitors will be taking on the straightforward course covering a total distance of 50.1nm. The boats start at Cowes and, in groups, head westward towards Yarmouth before passing the Needles Lighthouse. They then follow the south-west coast of the Isle of Wight to the southern most tip – St Catherine’s Point – and then move up the coast across Sandown Bay to round Bembridge Ledge Buoy. The fleet then makes its way either side of No Man’s Land Fort and across Osborne Bay to the finish line back at Cowes. This year race organisers have decided to alter the finish time of the race to help alleviate any concerns competitors may have about being able to finish within the usual time limit of 2200hrs. So, with the later than usual first start at 0830 they have extended the finish deadline by 30 minutes to 2230. For most of those taking part it will take many hours to complete the race. Much depends on the conditions on the day, but the course records stand at 3h 43m 50s for a monohull boat, set by Mike Slade on ICAP Leopard in 2013, and 2h 52m 15s for a multihull boat, set by Sir Ben Ainslie on J.P. Morgan BAR also in 2013.

RAISING MONEY

The official race charity is The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Image: Patrick Eden

For many of those taking part charity fundraising has always been a fun and exciting part of the Race. From individual fundraising to businesses, hundreds of thousands of pounds have been raised over the years. During the time that J.P. Morgan Asset Management has sponsored the Round the Island Race more than £600,000 has been raised for charity. The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust remains the official Race Charity and has raised almost £200,000 so far through its involvement. They are awarding teams and individuals who have raised over £50 for the Trust a flag to wave on race day. Founded by round-the-world yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur, the Trust takes young people sailing to help them regain their confidence on their way to recovery from cancer. If you want to make a one off donation to the EMCT Round the Island Race fundraising, an easy way is to TEXT your donation. Text RTIR16,

a space and then the amount in pounds to 70070. If you are planning to raise money this year the easiest way to start is setting up a Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/ roundtheisland. As if you needed an added incentive to raise a huge amount, J.P. Morgan Asset Management will award a Charity Cup to the boat that achieves the best fundraising result. This year the Race Management team has been hosting a series of online Q&A sessions. A team of experts, including one or two wellknown names who are especially familiar with the race, have been answering questions on specific topics. Two sessions, which can be replayed at the race website, have already taken place. They are: Entering & Planning your race and Charity fundraising, Race communications & Media. The final session takes place on 22 June and will cover Preparing for the race, tracking and start tactics.

“This race is about the most fun you can have in a sailboat. Actually, it is not just the race, as last year’s event proved extremely frustrating at times, but it’s the whole feeling of ‘family’, of feeling part of a great movement of people from all walks of life in all manner of sailing boats, all enjoying and feeling part of an event in a sport we love.” David Lewin, Red Magic Let us know on the All at Sea Facebook page if you can recommend a great viewpoint (www.facebook. com/allatseanewspaper). The Royal Southern Yacht Club has been granted the exclusive right by the Island Sailing Club to be the mainland HUB Club for this year’s Round the Island Race. As well as showing the Race EventTV feed throughout the weekend the club will also host race-related social functions during the weekend.

In addition to watching the RaceEventTV at the Royal Southern and Island Sailing Club the programme will be broadcast on the official race website for fans around the world to watch.

VLOGGER OF THE YEAR This year younger entrants are being asked to share their videos of the day. Young Vlogger of the Year award has

been launched to encourage some of the younger race competitors to share their experiences using live footage filmed on their smartphones or tablets. The award is open to anyone competing aged 17 or under on 2 July. Vloggers will need to submit up to three minutes of footage with a description of their experiences of preparing, competing, their result and a comment on what they thought of the race. WhErE TO SAIL In CrOATIA?

There are over 1000 islands off the coast of Croatia, so there are lots of anchorages, marinas and harbours to visit. Explore the stunning Dalmatian islands, by bareboat or flotilla, to the south of Split such as Hvar, Brac, Korcula and Viz or the Kornati National Park to the north. In the Kvarner Gulf, south of Pula, discover the unspoilt islands of Mali Losinj, Rab, Krk and Pag. The most popular choice is to start in the middle at Trogir or Split and sail south to the Dalmatian islands. If you have a second week, head north to the Kornati. Nautilus Yachting also have yachts based in the north at Pula and Rovinj for easy access to Kvarner Gulf. If you like a choice of restaurants and bars in the evening there are busy marinas and stunning medieval towns offering a lively night out. There are, however, marina fees - expect to pay up to £1.50/foot/night depending on location. LEArn TO SAIL

What better place to learn to sail than under the glorious Mediterranean sun or even further afield. There are many sailing holidays that combine with a RYA course such as Competent Crew, while others choose to learn to sail on a flotilla holiday with the instructor on board. However, this option is not just for beginners. RYA Day Skipper is another popular course to complete abroad too. It is a great way to get the whole family or group of friends learning together and having fun at the same time. Here is a taster of where you could be headed in 2016: n In Europe: Turkey, Sardinia, Corfu, Greece & Croatia n The Caribbean: St Martin, Antigua, St Lucia & Grenadines n In the Far East: Thailand

WATERSPORTS HOLIDAY

Nikiana Bay from a sea view room

GReeK BeACH ClUB HOlIDAY

Taking an RYA course or simply looking for fun on the water, beach clubs offer a fantastic holiday for all the family. Sue Baggaley reports from Greece’s Nikiana Beach Club. Just a winding 30-minute drive from the airport brings you across a causeway onto the island of Lefkada (aka Lefkas) and on to Nikiana, a small Greek town, which is the home of seafarer’s Nikiana Beach Club. the company’s well-rehearsed transfer saw us arrive at our beach resort home for a week of watersports. Being the first week of the season it was very quiet and company was unusually scarce but tuition was in abundance. the seafarer team gave us our briefing and showed us round the facilities, which attracts families and groups of friends who are drawn to this beautiful bay nestling in an unspoiled coastline. there are three apartment blocks on site, which can accommodate up to 75 guests during the peak season. the rooms are typically Greek in their simplicity and can sleep between three and five to a room. A two-second trip down to the beach and taverna means there is no reason to leave the site and, being situated well back from the main road, the complex is safe for kids. Freshly laundered sheets and towels are changed twice weekly and the rooms left immaculate by the daily maid service. For a small supplement you can book a sea view room and in my opinion is a must. there is good Wi-Fi in the taverna area and tV in the rooms although we struggled to find anything other than news channels in English.

2 and 3 adults and there are daily activity sessions to keep the kids amused, on and off the water. the RYA sailing, Windsurfing and Powerboat courses cater for complete novices or seasoned dinghy sailors and windsurfers. If your dinghy or windsurfing skills are a bit rusty there is a free one-hour session to refresh the memory. In addition one-hour sessions can be booked at just £15 per person; if you do not want to do the full courses they offer advice on any aspect of dinghy sailing and windsurfing. under the supervision of the club’s manager, Ben (scoop) Gerry, the team prepared the kit fast and efficiently and

all the equipment is available to use free of charge. During our stay we kayaked, sailed and stand-up paddled boarded around the large bay each day. Cai Henke, the safety boat driver, was skilled at keeping a watchful eye over events while keeping enough distance

so as to not be overbearing. He was certainly quick to my rescue on the two occasions when I capsized my dinghy. safety boat supervision is on hand as long as the beachfront is open.

BACK AT BASE

But forget the serious stuff. the familyrun taverna serves a good breakfast (included in the holiday price) of local yogurt and honey, cereals, bread, cheese, ham and eggs. Greek salad with tzatziki made a perfect lunch and after a full afternoon’s sailing a sundowner overlooking the spectacular bay is a must. Evening meals are fresh and simple with most costing less than 10 euros. some evenings a group of us took a 13 euro taxi ride into Lefkada where

we found an excellent little restaurant taverna La Vinaria serving very reasonably priced fresh tuna souvlaki and cool retsina. If you are looking for a inexpensive beach holiday with lots of aquatic adventures and where the sea changes from azure to cerulean blue according to the depth and the weather, then this could be for you. there are even plenty of sunset walks in the nearby marinas for those who feel the need to work off the holiday beers. www.seafarersailing.co.uk/beach-club/ nikiana @seafarerholiday – check out the video of Nikiana Beach Club on seafarer’s twitter page.

The phrase first appears in print in 1531 where it describes a vessel which had safely cleared the coast, then later Shakespeare used it in Henry VI as a reference to visibility. Neither of these references touch on its true insinuation; it is a reference to smuggling surely? Or some nefarious operation.

Lizzy Foreman

Last year Lizzy Foreman took part in the Mini Transat and hopes to race in the Vendee Globe one day. In this series Lizzy looks at all aspects of racing from technology to psychology.

There Is More To racInG Than MeeTs The eye

CRAvING thE CAbIN In this series experienced racer Lizzy Foreman takes us on a journey through the lives of racing sailors looking at the often forgotten challenges these men and women face. She begins with sleep which, although essential, has to be incredibly carefully managed at sea.

StudieS of offshore sailors during long-distance events such as the Vendee Globe, Solitaire du Figaro and Mini transat have led researchers (notably dr. Stampi, Neil Weston and Remy Hurdiel) to believe that people can function and perform on only two to six hours of sleep in any given 24 hour period; a technique known as ‘polyphasic sleeping’. Normal sleep patterns consist of five stages, which are summarised as ‘light sleep’, ‘deep sleep’ and ‘ReM sleep’. these stages are repeated every 90 - 110 minutes until an average of seven hours sleep is achieved. in comparison, polyphasic sleeping consists of numerous 15 – 45 minute naps, resulting in large chunks of stage five ReM (the only stage of sleep that is actually required to survive and function normally). Stage two sleep is ditched. 95 per cent of slow-wave sleep (stages three and four) is retained. it is during slow-wave sleep that neocortical

neurons are able to rest, allowing the brain to recover. Contrary to belief these short sleepwake cycles are actually quite natural. 85 per cent of mammals are polyphasic sleepers (as were we up to 10,000 years ago), allowing them to stay alert and aware of their environment. SLEEPING SAILORS So, how can sailors utilize polyphasic sleeping during offshore racing? First and foremost, skippers must plan when they will sleep - taking into consideration the racecourse and weather – to best make use of the time when they are naturally feeling sleepy. Circadian rhythms within the body control our natural tendency for sleep, which is between 1am to 5 am (when it is darkest and coldest) and between 2pm to 4pm (when we typically would have snoozed in the afternoon sun). Generally, alertness peaks again from 6pm to 8pm as this is the

‘forbidden zone’. this is the time when our ancestors would have found it necessary to seek shelter and make their surroundings safe before dusk. SLEEPING MODELS there are five models of polyphasic sleep that sailors can use, but the most practical are the uberman for solo racing and the everyman for doublehanded racing. For a race up to 300nm two to three hours sleep is recommended. Any longer than this and you should be dozing for a minimum of five hours a day. However, it takes time to become effective at managing sleep and even professional skippers struggle. For example, in 2013, R. Hurdiel and his team studied 12 sailors on the Figaro circuit. during a 300nm race they only managed 60 – 124 minutes sleep, incurring severe sleep loss and demonstrating marked performance impairment.

Similarly, during the 2007 Mini transat skippers’ sleeping times varied between 3.5 – 4.6 hours during leg one and 4.2 – 5.2 hours during the longer second leg. All participants in the study reported functional impairments resulting in spinnaker wraps, broaching out, auditory hallucinations, feelings of sadness and difficulty waking up. SLEEP DIARY Logging my sleep in a diary, i averaged five hours kip during both legs of the 2015 Mini transat, taking naps of 20 – 30 minutes between the early hours of the morning and during the afternoon. despite this i still lost a spinnaker during a 35 knot squall. i had been asleep when i should have been dropping the

kite and reefing my mainsail. i also took a few strategic decisions that i would not have made otherwise. Like most people i thought i would be a good judge of my own tiredness, but cognitive slowness, errors in judgement and impaired decision making often occur before the feeling of fatigue even becomes apparent. this is why top skippers such as 2012 Vendee Globe winner Francois Gabart attend sleep training camps (such as those held at Port-la-Foret in France) to really tune in to their natural rhythms and tendencies. i better make my appointment… Want to find out more about sleep deprivation? t s e b s Bembridge bite

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2016

Lifelong food and drink enthusiast, Penny Hopkins, blends a background in hospitality with keen journalistic skills, travelling far and wide in search of a tasty bite - by boat, foot and bike.

lage with il v r la u p o p y r A ve ternmost s a e e h t n o s r sailo Wight. f o le Is e h t f o point

FOR this trip to the Isle of Wight we decided to leave the boat behind, jump on the Red Funnel to East Cowes and pick up one of Red Squirrel’s e-bikes. We could actually enjoy the scenery whilst gliding up those famous Isle of Wight hills. Aaron Orman from Visit Wight met us and we were off, whipping along to Wooton in no time at all, to the first stop at Briddlesford Farm. Breakfast being a distant memory, I was keen to meet the team that own one of the few A2 dairy herds in the country. A2 milk contains a different protein base which Guernseys have in their DNA. French milk is completely A2, but the rest of Europe transferred over to big Friesian herds some years ago. A2 milk is easier to digest and makes better, creamier cheeses and yoghurts, though contains no more fat. The farm shop and café are busy, with people enjoying lunch and cream teas. I go for the latter and my companion has the peppered steak sandwich. The raspberry and loganberry jam is exceptionally good with the home produced clotted cream. The steak sandwich is a meal in itself.

A RYDE AWAY

Nothing is too far away on the Island, which makes cycling a joy. We drop down into Ryde before heading to Bembridge, via Seaview and St Helens. The sea breeze picks up and I am glad of a power burst to get me to the pretty village green at St Helens where we rather like the look of both Ganders on the north side and Dan’s Kitchen on t’other side. A quick brush up and we are back for dinner. Dan’s Kitchen is now full to the rafters with a convivial crowd enjoying the warm ambience. So, we make for Ganders, where there is a little more room, and are treated to some quality cooking that is exceptional value for money; two courses for £17.95. This family business knows what it is doing. Dad (Ian Cowcher) is the owner chef, mum is front of house and their younger son brings the food and guidance. We share the Tandoori mackerel fillet skewers - subtle smokey flavours - with a mango mayo. Whole plaice with savoury butter and their superb steak & ale pie followed this. The pie was made with Goddard’s ale, a good mix of crunchy vegetables, tasty, slow cooked beef while the plaice had fresh, firm white flesh with a pleasantly charred, crisp skin. I could have happily eaten everything on the pudding menu (this is not always

the case) but went for the plum & amaretto Tarte Tatin, made with brioche rather than puff pastry. It had very good flavours and was the perfect finish to a meal that was balanced and beautifully cooked and presented.

BREAKFAST DECISIONS

After a decent sleep – did you know many of the boathouses do B&B? - we were ready for breakfast. A bit of a map struggle here as I really wanted to try out Cantina over in Ventnor, but we were having lunch at the Beach Hut in Bembridge, but as I said earlier, nothing is that far away on the island, just a bit of a steep hairpin bend entry to Ventnor. Cantina is worth the effort; my sort of place with excellent coffee and bread. I had the porridge with butter roast apples and cinnamon and Mike the full English and a couple of flat whites to wash it down. Then back along the seafront at Shanklin we notice an interesting glass building, perched atop what I assume was the old Bandstand, gaining great views out to sea and back over the golf course. It was a good café stop, with the cool glazing opening wide so we could see the racing from Bembridge ahead. We find a picture book English country village, with a frisson of Saturday spring time weddings in the air. We dodged the queues outside the Farm Shop and Bembridge Bakery and wistfully read the menu at Lockslane that we had hoped to visit but will have to come back to as they were closed for annual staff holidays. Another good reason to return was the Shed, just along from the wonderful Farm Shop with baskets of keenly priced local asparagus and glowing Isle of Wight tomatoes. Shed serves tapas, mezze and so on and has a Tuesday night special of £10 for two courses. Happy hour looked generous too, running from 3-6pm every day.

We still had a bit of time before heading to the Beach Hut so whizzed down the hill to the harbour to check that the ladies in the Tollgate were still serving up their usual magic of quick, well priced café food. they sell up to a quarter tonne of crab a day. The airy café sits on the pontoon and enjoys wonderful views over the harbour and is a popular stop for crustacean lovers everywhere. Time for lunch and so we search out the Beach Hut on Forelands Beach. We settle in the sun, bare feet on the grass and notice we could have brought our own drinks with no corkage charge. I order the crab ramekin, a sort of crab coquille St Jacques affair. The only disappointment is the boring old roll, whilst Mike has a very good BLT with fresh granary roll, tasty crisp bacon. A bottle of Luscombe’s Damascene Rose Bubbly completes the scene and we enjoy watching a team from Haslar Marina order the lobster platter and pop their corks.

in first place, and receiving a £500 prize, was York University Sailing and windsurfing Club and in second place with a £250 prize was The University of Strathclyde Sailing Club. in third place, after battling off a number of other clubs, was the University of Plymouth Sailing and Powerboating Club which won the £100 prize. THE CHALLENGE Supported by British University Sailing Association, the challenge involves USCs competing to undertake as many sustainable actions as they can throughout the academic year. Through these actions they will have the opportunity to demonstrate to the rest of the boating community how achievable and rewarding sustainable boating can be. Sustainable actions include ensuring their sailing venue has a Spill Kit available to clean up any accidental oil and fuel spills, ensuring members use re-usable sports bottles during training sessions and events and making sure boats, trailers and equipment follow the Check Clean Dry approach to minimise the risk of spreading invasive non-native species around UK waters.

Participating clubs have to complete and evidence as many of the 14 sustainable actions as they can to achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award level by 20 February 2017. The top three universities that evidence the most sustainable actions will be invited to attend the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace in March 2017 to receive prizes and certificates on the main stage.

MARINA CHAT

MEETING BOATERS AROUND THE UK’S MARINAS

VENTURING UP THE THAMES Colin and Jacky Pattenden love cruising the Thames in their Falcon 27. WE currently cruise a Falcon 27 Joybringer, which is a new boat for us after having our last motorboat Venturer for almost 10 years. We moved Venturer to Penton Hook Marina after I moved my company, CP Sound Ltd, to the offices at the marina. We have been there for about five years now. Out on the water Jacky and I enjoy cruising up and down the Thames, sometimes as far as Benson, near Oxford. Although Joybringer can go up to 35 knots, we rarely go above eight knots when cruising the Thames. We have both embraced the laid back approach to boating and enjoy a slow, relaxing meander up the river. THE EASY LIFE It is nice and simple at Penton Hook. It is so easy to walk out on to the pontoon and to the boat. The marina also has fantastic facilities available; I am a regular customer to the

Once a month the MDL office hosts a party for all the berth holders, which is a great way for us to catch up and to get to know each other better. Usually we will cruise up to Windsor or Bray marinas over the weekend, which is very convenient as we can berth at any of MDL’s marinas at no extra cost. It fits in with our easy-going lifestyle, which suits us just fine! See All at Sea February 2016 for our Penton Hook Marina focus. www.mdlmarinas.co.uk/mdl-pentonhook-marina

DOUGAL’S DIARY

ALL AT SEA JUNE 2016

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ST. BONIFACE DOWN BY DAVID HENSHALL

The Island’s eye in the sky

As the highest point on the Isle of Wight, St. Boniface Down has a special place in the island’s history.

From its vantage point atop St. Boniface Down, RAF Ventnor enjoyed panoramic views out over the south side of the Isle of Wight and the English Channel. Painting courtesy of John and Carolyn Finch

As the competing boats in the Round the Island Race romp around the course (or drift around if it is another flat calm) the skippers will be ticking off the ‘conspic’ landmarks as they pass. The Needles, st. Catherine’s Point, then Bembridge Ledge before the final blast up the Eastern solent to the Finishing Line. But there is one other major Island landmark; indeed, it is the only one that is pretty much visible all the way around. At 241m high, the top of st. Boniface Down in not just the highest point of the Island, but the highest point along the central south Coast. Jutting out into the Channel, it must have been a natural vantage point since the earliest days of man’s occupation of the Island. But its true strategic importance would only become apparent in the late 1930s, when the emerging technology of radar was being perfected. RADAR STATION Although the detection of aircraft using radio waves had been explored simultaneously in a number of countries, in the UK the team led by Robert WatsonWatt conducted most of the work. After a successful practical demonstration in 1935, one new convert to the development of a practical radar defence network would later become Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding. Dowding was a firm supporter of the initiative to build a linked series of radar sites, the Chain Home service that would play such a part in the Battle of Britain. In 1938, with war looming, a Chain Home radar station was built on the summit of st Boniface Down, with the site then becoming known as RAF Ventnor. Below ground were the operational and equipment bunkers.

Above ground the site was made even more conspicuous with the erection of four 110m high steel pylon towers. CRITICAL ROLE Once the work was completed, the site, the most westerly of the early Chain Home stations, provided radar coverage not only south towards the coast of France but westwards towards Portland and Weymouth.

At first life was quiet for the staff at RAF Ventnor but with the fall of France the prime targets for bombing of Portsmouth Naval Base and southampton, with its docks and spitfire factory, were now in easy reach for the Luftwaffe formations. Taking off from air bases in Northern France, their route to these prime targets would pass almost straight over the Isle of Wight. With the ability to plot the attackers

almost from the moment that they took to the air, RAF Ventnor was now playing a crucial role in what would become the ‘Battle of Britain’. At first the German High Command seemed happy to ignore the role played by radar but this would all change on 12 August 1940 when a large force of enemy bombers pulverised the whole of the hilltop, putting the station out of commission. Four days later the bombers were back again to make doubly sure that the site at RAF Ventnor was well and truly wrecked. so much damage was caused that service could not restart until the end of september of that year, though a temporary station was brought on line to plug the gap in the air defences. Ultimately, wrecking RAF Ventnor would become counter productive for the Germans. The station would come back on line with new and more powerful radar that would play its part in monitoring the airspace to the south of the UK. For the rest of the war RAF Ventnor would play a major role in the defence of Central southern England that would culminate in the detection and tracking of the V1 flying bombs. With the end of the war, the RAF prepared to stand down the hill top

ABOVE: 75 years on, the upper reaches of Ventnor Down are still pock marked with bomb craters, a testament to the ferocity of the aerial assault on the site. Image: David Henshall

site but at first the towers remained. Their continued presence then caused a tragedy when the Royal Mail plane carrying the post for the Channel Islands hit one of the towers in poor visibility. A NEW LIFE In the late 1950s the tall radar masts were removed but this was far from the end for the site as the new concerns stemming from the cold war with the soviet bloc countries saw new equipment installed. The height and central location that made the st Boniface hilltop so important in war today serves more peaceful purposes just as easily. The National Air Traffic Control and Civil Aviation Authority now maintain radar and ground to air communications from the site. Once again, as the Round the Island yachts sail past Ventnor towards sandown Bay, the eyes of the sailors will be drawn upwards to the hilltop and the masts there, the location that was truly the Island’s ‘Eye in the sky’. The site of RAF Ventnor is now heavily overgrown, though the massive concrete bases for the radar masts can still clearly be seen. Image: David Henshall

70th ANNIVERSARY

ROCKETING AHEAD MERLIN ROCKET’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY bY MROA

When the two separate classes, the Thames designed Merlin and Nottingham designed Rocket, had the foresight to merge few would have predicted the longevity and success that the Merlin Rocket Owners Association has enjoyed. Still at the forefront of development and design the class has endured while others have struggled to compete with the ever increasing expectations of the modern dinghy racer and club sailor. Whether competing on the sea or open water in the latest new builds or racing in the equally competitive 1960s designs on the river or inland there is something for everyone and the class is flourishing. OLYMPIC WINNERS the quality of racing is testament to the success of the class. the 2015 Championships were won by Ben Saxton (team GB - Nacra 17) who had to compete against the likes of Stuart Bithell (2012 Silver medallist in the 470s), Nick Craig

and Roger Gilbert (multiple Endeavour Champions), Andy Davis, David Hayes, Sam Pascoe and tim Fells to name but a few. 2016 EVENTS the 2016 Selden sponsored Championships are being hosted by Penzance SC from 13 – 19 August. 50 per cent discounts are available for youth sailors, classic Merlins over 15 years old (3600) and also first time competitors for helms who have never before competed at the Nationals. Merlin Rocket Week, 10 – 15 July, is another key event in the Merlin calendar. last year it broke all records by selling out in three days; 120 entrants all signed and paid for. if ever there was proof needed of the

event’s popularity and significance within the UK sailing scene then this was it. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Over the weekend of 10 - 11 September the class are officially celebrating their 70th Birthday with a party at Upper thames SC. A ‘race of champions’ Saturday afternoon will be great for spectators being able to watch the likes of Alan Warren, Phil King, Patrick Blake, as well as Stuart Bithell, Andy Davis and William Warren battle it out. With food, gin and entertainment running in to the small hours of the morning this will be a party not to miss. Silver tiller racing is scheduled for Sunday making the most of the weekend. www.merlinrocket.co.uk

MARINA FOCUS SPOTLIGHT ON UK MARINAS & HARBOURS

SHEPARDS WHARF MARINA Shepards Wharf Marina Medina Road, Cowes PO31 7HT 01983 297821 / VHF Channel 80 shepards.chc@cowes.co.uk www.shepardswharfmarina.co.uk www.cowesharbourcommission.co.uk

Shepards Wharf Marina is a popular place to berth for cruising and day racing yachtsmen on the Isle of Wight. SHEPARDS Wharf Marina is a family-friendly marina conveniently located just two minutes from Cowes High Street and near the Cowes Chain Ferry. Owned and operated by Cowes Harbour Commission, Shepards Wharf is perfect for yachts and motor cruisers alike, offering affordable marina berthing in a welcoming atmosphere. The knowledgeable marina team are always on hand to offer advice on the best cruising grounds, show you the facilities and services on offer and generally help out wherever they can. Shepards Wharf Marina is popular with organised rallies and regattas and these can be booked in advance along with the use of their new Sugar Store Events Centre. There is also space on the pier for barbecues and picnics.

Shepards Wharf is home to Cowes Harbour Commission’s moorings and berthing team who manage over 2,200m of pontoons, 39 pile berths and 400 swinging moorings in the harbour. Competitively priced fuel can be obtained from Cowes Harbour Fuels located 200m south of the Chain Ferry. Renowned as the world’s premier yachting centre, Cowes is steeped in tradition with a wealth of maritime history to explore. When your day on the water is over, Cowes offers a vast array of eating and drinking options including an ample number of pubs. The Pier View was recently jointly crowned the world’s Favourite Yachting Bar in an international vote.

HISTORY

SHEPARDS Wharf gets its name from a local fishing family who progressed to commercial mariners during the 18th century. By 1848 Shepards Brothers Limited owned five sailing craft and two steamers engaged daily in the coasting trade between the island and the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth. After World War II nationalisation led to Shepards Brothers Limited being acquired by Pickfords. In 1949 Pickfords had a fleet of 15 cargo vessels and owned two wharves at Cowes: Shepards and Thetis. At this time Shepards was the only legal quay on the island for the landing of foreign goods.

INVESTMENT

COWES Harbour Commission purchased Shepards Wharf in early 2001 and since then has continued an ongoing investment programme into what is now Shepards Wharf Marina. Recent developments include the installation of a state-of-the-art hydraulic crane in 2014 to benefit the marina’s dry sailing community and the refurbishment of the old Sugar Store warehouse last year into a waterfront Events Centre.

ACCESS

COWES Harbour is the main commercial port for the Isle of Wight and can be approached safely from the north, east and west. When approaching from the north, care should be taken not to infringe large vessels in the Southampton Precautionary Area. The main entrance to the Inner Harbour is marked by No. 1 and 2 buoys, with the Royal Yacht Squadron prominent to the west and the new Cowes Breakwater on the eastern edge of the fairway. All vessels are advised to maintain a listening watch on VHF Ch69, the port working frequency. Call ‘Shepards Wharf Marina’ on VHF Ch80 to advise them of your arrival. Shepards Wharf Marina is situated on the starboard side of the River Medina in the Inner Fairway. Pass the Red Jet terminal and the entrance to the Small Craft Channel. The entrance to Shepards Wharf Marina is opposite No. 6 buoy and the giant Union Flag doors of Venture Quays. DRY SAILING

FACILITIES

SHEPARDS Wharf has over 10 years’ experience providing dry sail packages to island and mainland boat owners Dry sailing is the focal point of shoreside operations at the marina, home to a variety of day class yachts and RIBs including the Royal Yacht Squadron and Royal Thames Yacht Club J/70 fleet. The marina’s new dry sailing crane has a launch capacity of six tonnes, a telescopic outreach of 14m with a 360° turn. The system is equipped for man-riding operations up to 500kg with a reach of up to 20m above the water, making the stepping of a mast a very simple procedure. The new dry sailing crane is one of the largest of its type in the UK and will

■ Marina VHF: Ch80 ■ Visitor berths: 130 ■ Resident berths: 40 ■ Max. draught: 3 metres ■ Tides: Cowes, Isle of Wight Facilities: Water and electricity on all berths, free Wi-Fi, inclusive showers, modern toilets, disabled facilities, hard standing, parking, site-wide CCTV security, parking, dry sailing crane to six tonnes, Calor gas, The Sugar Store waterfront Events Centre, marina pier and barbecue area, onsite restaurant and sail loft, free pump out, garbage disposal, recycling facilities, first aid, fuel berth nearby. LOCAL AREA HIGHLIGHTS COWES offers great visitor appeal with world-famous tourist attractions such as Queen Victoria’s Osborne House nearby in East Cowes. The Classic Boat Museum Gallery is also located in East Cowes at what was the Columbine Building and houses a wide and fascinating mix of exhibits including sections dedicated to Sir Francis Chichester, Dame Ellen MacArthur and Uffa Fox. There is more maritime history at the Sir Max Aitken Museum, a treasure trove of artefacts and memorabilia in the 18th century former sail loft ‘The Prospect’ on Cowes High Street. The town of Cowes is a perfect place to potter and enjoy a gentle day’s browsing, while during major regattas it bustles with activity as racing crews throng the streets. The town is home to many unique galleries, independent shops, delicatessens and clothing stores, as well as marine suppliers. Cowes and East Cowes face each other over the River Medina and are linked by a Chain Ferry affectionately known as the ‘floating bridge’, one of only a handful still operating in the UK. The beautiful and tranquil Medina Estuary is a protected coastal habitat and the wide, shallow valley, bordered

by mudflats and areas of saltmarsh, is an important ecosystem that teems with wildlife. A great way of getting another view of the estuary is to walk or cycle. The popular Medina Estuary circular walk now includes accessible sections for cycling, including part of the Red Squirrel Trail, and the Greenway between Island Harbour and Newport. It can take as little as 20 minutes to motor up to the Folly Reach from the harbour entrance. The Folly visitor pontoons lie directly opposite the Folly Inn, one of the must-visit places for many thirsty yachtsmen who venture up the River Medina. Located at the head of the River Medina, Newport Harbour is a journey back in time. Newport, the county town of the Isle of Wight, is full of historical interest and has a broad range of facilities. The harbour is fully tidal, so if you plan to stay you will dry out against the harbour wall or one of the pontoons.

EXPLORING FURTHER

THE sheltered waters of the Solent make ideal cruising grounds and the area is home to many inviting anchorages and well-equipped marinas encouraging you to explore further afield. The Isle of Wight has many characterful small harbours, mainly along the northern and eastern shores, whilst across the Solent there is a wide range of berthing options, from picturesque yachting towns like Lymington to the convenience of major cities such as Southampton and Portsmouth, and the extensive facilities of the River Hamble.

ON-SITE BUSINESSES

CONVENIENTLY located on-site at Shepards Wharf are the Amabi Basque Restaurant, Solent Sails, Island Divers and Girls for Sail. Amabi is a restaurant and tapas bar that infuses Basque Country cooking with the best fresh Isle of Wight produce. Solent Sails is the marina’s resident sail maker and repairer, delivering a wide range of goods and services, including new sails, cover work and yacht fenders. Island Divers is the only PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre and Tec Rec Centre on the Isle of Wight. Girls for Sail has been encouraging women to sail since 1999 and is the UK’s only sailing school for ladies, offering RYA sailing courses, holidays and racing events in the Caribbean, UK and everywhere in between.

future-proof dry sailing operations at Shepards Wharf. Choosing to dry sail from Shepards Wharf also means easy access to the world-class sailing waters of the Solent, and with the marina’s central island location plus convenient transport links to the mainland and beyond, it is ideally placed for local boat owners as well as those based further afield.

“When we were looking for a home for our brand new fleet of J70s, Shepards Wharf Marina provided us with excellent launching and marina facilities. Their care for the boats has been exemplary and we look forward to continuing our long-term partnership.” Chris Mason (Bosun), Royal Yacht Squadron

THE SUGAR STORE EVENTS CENTRE NEWLY refurbished and upgraded into an Events Centre last year, The Sugar Store combines an industrial chic vibe with a nautical feel and takes advantage of a prime waterside location with outside decking, marina pier and stunning views over Cowes Harbour. facilities at Shepards Wharf, is perfectly placed for hosting rallies, regattas and championships in Cowes. It is envisaged that The Sugar Store will be utilised predominantly for marine-related events, although the building is also expected to be a multi-use facility for the benefit of local residents and visitors alike.

The Yacht Harbour Association launches 2017 Marina of the Year Awards THE Yacht Harbour Association (THYA) has announced the launch of its Marina of the Year Awards for 2017. Now in its fourth year, the Awards are open to all Gold Anchor accredited marinas both in the UK and overseas. Lymington Yacht Haven, winner of the Coastal Marina of the Year 2016 Award (over 250 berths), was the fitting venue for the official launch of the Awards. The official cutting of the Marina of the Year Awards celebration cake was conducted by Sarah Hanna, Chair of TYHA, and representatives of Lymington Yacht Haven and Poole Quay Boat Haven. The competition is aimed directly at boat owners and boat crew, asking them to vote for their favourite Gold Anchor marina online at www. marinaoftheyearawards.com. Over 4500 votes were cast for the 2016 Awards, a 48% increase from 2015. Last year an impressive 88 marinas received votes demonstrating just how

highly marina customers value the high levels of customer service provided in Gold Anchor accredited marinas. Voting closes on 30th November 2016 and the Awards will be presented during the London Boat Show at ExCeL London on Thursday 12 January 2017.

OCEAN Village Marina in Southampton has a new Italian restaurant, Bacaro, specialising in Italian tapas with an extensive wine and cocktail menu. The menu, which features sharing dishes, boasts delights including arancini, risotto, and a number of fresh seafood dishes. Owner Lucy Watts brings with her a passion for food and wine which is evident in the restaurant’s menu, commenting: “The restaurant’s philosophy echoes that of the Italian Bacari – the simple pleasures are the most important for our health and wellbeing. We wanted to create somewhere where customers can

relax with us and enjoy a few cicchetti (small plates), a glass of wine and take pleasure in the moment, free from worry. Good wine, delicious food and the company of friends are the recipe for a life well lived.” Bacaro follows the Italian tradition of offering small plates of food to accompany drinks in the evening, and every Friday Lucy is offering little tasters for free between 5.30 - 6pm when customers buy a drink. She is also offering two-for-one on a selection of cocktails between 5-7pm. www.bacarosouthampton.com Tel: 023 8033 3221.

MINI MASTER CLASS

THE Masterclass

PHIL WALKER, BRITISH YOUTH SAILING 29ER COACH

SUMMER OF RACING

For many sailors there are racing events coming up over the next few months. Now is the time to prepare so that you can concentrate on achieving a great result on the big day.

For anything you do change make a note of its length, diameter and type of rope and keep this list in the top of your toolbox. If the replaced item is in good enough condition keep it in your toolbox/rig bag as a spare. Keeping a list may sound a bit keen but it will become a useful resource and prove really helpful when you need to send a non-sailing parent/spouse running to the chandlery 10 minutes before you launch to get a specific bit of string.

PERSONAL PREPARATION

BOAT PREPARATION

The last thing you want to do on the morning of your key regatta is change everything so it is brand new for the big event. Ropes will be slippery, likely the wrong length, and you could create leaks where you replace blocks.

Take some time after work or school to make a list of items that are likely to break over the course of a tough week of racing. Check these on your boat and decide if they need changing or whether they are perfectly ‘bedded in’ for the season ahead.

A tough week of racing will take its toll on you mentally and physically. Your preparation for this will really help. You could turn to meditation and convince yourself that pain is only in your head and it is simply a function of mind over matter. On the other hand, eating healthily, keeping up a base level of fitness and staying hydrated is a good place to start. Think what type of physical exertion you will face over the week. If you are a helm who needs to constantly hike, working on your core muscles will be a priority, while a 29er crew needs a high level of aerobic fitness along with bursts of energy.

On top of your basic fitness routine, perhaps tailor some extra sessions to fit with your role.

FINAL TRAINING

Be very diligent with your final bit of on the water practice. It is all too easy to go for a blast up and down the harbour, which is unlikely to help you at the main event.

I see it time and time again; very fast sailors with excellent boat handling unable to execute because they have had a shocking start. So make sure you focus on the area that will make the biggest impact to your regatta: do plenty of practice triggers, lots of prestart boat handling and get your eyes calibrated on those transits. A couple of changes could really make a difference to your racing this summer. Before you arrive at the venue take some time to set some goals for the week, make a final plan and watch the top results come flooding in. Good luck! Skinny Prosecco, something genuinely new in the fizzy white wine market.

MUCH has been written about Prosecco and its relatively bargain price. The demand in the UK continues to grow strongly, but it should not be seen as a cheap alternative to Champagne. Prosecco is a fine wine in its own right and the Italian Amanda Thomson producers have worked hard launched Thomson to build up and police their & Scott Skinny own DOCG (Denominazione Prosecco at Easter di Origine Controllata e Garantita) in a market crowded with other French, Spanish and English sparkling wine offers. The grapes are mainly Glera and production must be in the Veneto region of Italy, midway between Venice and the Alps, and centred around the village of Prosecco. SKINNY PROSECCO Now an English entrepreneur, Amanda Thomson, has come up with something really different with a simple-to-understand product claim: Thomson & Scott Skinny Prosecco. It was officially launched at Easter. ‘Skinny’ is both the descriptor and the brand name. The wine is just 67 calories per 100ml glass and made with only seven grams of sugar per litre, half the amount in a traditional Prosecco.

“Skinny is the first to have the calorie content on the bottle label,” said Amanda, squaring up to the current war on sugar in many foods and drinks. Some sugar is necessary to complete the fermentation and reducing the sugar can only work with the very best wine to start with. This is not cheap plonk and will cost around £18 per bottle (11 per cent abv). Current distribution is limited to a few big stores and top hotels and restaurants, but Skinny is catching on fast and soon there will be a stockist near you. Meanwhile you can source it at www.thomsonandscott. It is only available by the six-bottle case at £108. The Prosecco comes after the company had successfully created the no sugar Thomson & Scott Skinny Champagne Grand Cru in collaboration with top Champagne producer Alexandre Penet. It is the first to obtain approval from the French Champagne Association (CIVC) to call itself ‘skinny’. Also a premium product, the online price is £300 for a six-bottle case or £50 per bottle. There is a Rosé Champagne, too. The company reports Skinny Prosecco and Champagne are both growing fast in volume and distribution. If the low/no sugar idea has so much traction it will not be long before other wines or beers get on the bandwagon. They just will not be able to call them ‘Skinny’ - clever move by T & S.

CAMRA DEBATE Mission achieved, says the Campaign for Real Ale. Where to now? CAMRA was founded in 1971 to ‘save’ real ale. After a tough start, recently the expansion of new boutique breweries has been relentless, as has the explosion of ‘craft’ ales from small independent companies and sub-brands from corporate brewers. And there are plenty of customers to buy them. This is seen by CAMRA as job done. So CAMRA is now carrying out a Revitalisation Project. Led by Michael Hardman, one of the founders, it is a wide-ranging survey among CAMRA members or anyone else interested in real ale and good pubs. Should they continue as now or shift their campaigning skills to, say, campaigning for good pubs as an important part of community life? Or become a consumer organisation for all beer drinkers or all pub-goers, regardless of what they drink. To join the debate visit camra.org.uk/revitalisation and register to attend a local CAMRA meeting. Or just search for ‘CAMRA’ online and a lively and exciting website will come up.
