Deaths spark questions over coastal safety Despite the RNLI’s high profile Respect the Water campaign during August there were 12 deaths around the UK’s coast in just one week. At Camber Sands, in East Sussex, five men aged 19 to 27 lost their lives. Three of the men died trying to rescue two friends who had been caught in a ‘vicious’ rip ride. The RNLI said it believed the men had “failed to appreciate how quickly the tide would come in.” However locals did question the absence of lifeguards on what is a popular beach. The families of the victims have also asked why no lifeguards were present. They believe their sons would have had a better chance of surviving had lifeguards been on duty. It has been confirmed that lifeguards had been recommended for the beach by the RNLI three years ago but it was not actioned. In response to the tragedy at Camber Sands, the RNLI worked with Rother District Council to provide reassurance to the public by providing a temporary bank holiday RNLI lifeguard service. That provision was then extended until 4 September. Rip currents are a major cause of accidental drowning on beaches all across the world. In the UK over 60 per cent of RNLI lifeguard incidents involve rip currents as they can drag people and debris away from the shoreline and out to deeper water. Following the deaths at Camber Sands David Walker, RoSPA’s leisure safety manager, said: “We are terribly sorry to hear of the tragedy at Camber Sands, and
our thoughts are with those involved and their families. “The most positive choice you can take is to go to a lifeguarded beach – check out the Marine Conservation Society’s www. goodbeachguide.co.uk. “Be aware of tides, even if you are not intending to be in the water, as a quickturning tide can catch out walkers, climbers and others enjoying the shore. Strong currents are a danger, so make sure you know how to spot rip currents and know how to escape them.” There have been warnings that further deaths will follow due to the cuts to the coastguard service, which has seen nine of the 19 coastguard stations axed. This has resulted in the remaining services becoming dangerously over-stretched according to some rescue officers and lifeboat crew members. The lack of lifeguards on beaches has also been blamed by MP Gordon Marsden on local government cuts. Dennis O’Connor, national co-ordinator for the campaign group Coastguard SOS, said: “We are concerned at reports of staff shortages in coordination centres including the National Maritime Operations Centre. Understaffing is something that we repeatedly highlighted as a concern. “The MCA has failed to address the problem effectively and it is our fear that
more lives will be lost as a result.” The MCA said: “Incidents can be handled by any officer anywhere in our integrated network of operations centres.” Prior to the deaths at Camber Sands there were six deaths over one August weekend. The deaths, in Cornwall, Essex, Dorset, Jersey and Aberdeenshire, were directly linked to stormy conditions. The RNLI described the sea as “dangerously unpredictable”.
was helped to shore by a member of the public. The bad weather may also have been a factor in the death of David Baker, a windsurfer who died at West Mersea in Essex. 50mph winds were battering the coast, although David Murr, chairman of the The Mersea Windsurfers & Kitesurfers club, said: “Dave was one of the original members, he has been windsurfing for 20 years, and was a very experienced sailor.” Near Sandbanks in Dorset Jayarajah Katheeswaran was killed after being caught in ‘dangerous waters’ off a crowded beach. He was rescued by lifeguards after being ‘seen in difficulty’ in a rip current outside the safe-swim area. Although rip tides were a factor in that incident and that at Camber Sands there are other common risk factors. Tidal cut off contributes to a significant number of RNLI rescues every year. While one rescue would give most people a bigger enough scare to make them take extra care in the future, one woman in Looe had to be rescued by the RNLI after being cut off from the tide three times in four days. She was subsequently given a ‘comprehensive safety briefing’. Other risk factors to be aware of include the effect on the body of entering cold water. The shock can be the
Over half of the people who die at the coast each year never planned to enter the water. That suggests people are not taking enough care Rudy Bruynius died after being swept off rocks into the sea at Newquay. His twoyear-old daughter Micayla and wife Cindy were also swept away. Micayla sadly died four days later. In Aberdeen another child died when Julie Walker and her six-year-old son Lucas died after getting into difficulty in the water A female swimmer, Joy Godfray, died after being pulled from the sea in the Channel Islands. She had been swimming when she got into trouble when a high tide and strong winds made sea conditions treacherous. A man swimming with her
precursor to drowning. Another common factor is alcohol, which can seriously impair judgement, reactions and the ability to swim. Alcohol contributes to around one in eight coastal deaths in the UK. Around 190 people die every year in our waters and the RNLI has been working to halve that number by 2024 by highlighting the risks and giving advice to keep those enjoying the water safe. Incredibly half of those who die at the coast never even intended to get wet. They were taking part in activities such as coastal walking, running, climbing or angling. This further highlights the need to be aware of what to do should an emergency situation occur. James Millidge, RNLI Coastal Safety Manager, said: “The fact that over half of the people who die at the coast each year never planned to enter the water suggests people are also not taking enough care along the coastline itself. We are warning people to stay away from cliff edges, particularly where there is slippery, unstable or uneven ground; stick to marked paths and keep an eye on the water – watch out for unexpected waves which can catch you out and sweep you into the water.” While the deaths this summer have made headline news, it should also be remembered that on a good day many thousands of people use the UK’s beaches safely. Jurassic beaches at risk of closure Experts are warning that Jurassic Coast beaches could be closed if visitors fail to use common sense. Rockfalls and landslides are common on the stretch of Dorset coast made a Unesco World Heritage Site in 2001. Sally King, the area’s visitor manager, said: “Visitors who sunbathe too close to the cliff edge do not really understand the risk or danger.” Sally also pointed out the cliffs are very ‘proactive’ at the moment. There are warning signs, but they are being ignored. Visitors are asked to try areas of
the coast not at risk of rock falls. Warnings have been issue by the coastguard in the past reminding the public to follow safety notices. Wardens and patrols have been suggested but it is hoped better awareness will solve the situation. A study earlier this year found the stretch of coast brings an estimated £111m per year to the Dorset and East Devon economy, helping to support 2,000 jobs. Clearly closing the beaches would be an huge blow to the local economy.

ALL ABOARD By Jane Hyde CONGRATULATIONS to the British Sailing Team. Great Britain was the top performing sailing nation again at Rio. While not all the team were happy with their results they should be incredibly proud of their performances. It was great to see, despite the huge distance to Rio, the British fans out in force. Let us hope the Paralympic team achieve a similar success. If you go to the Southampton Boat Show you could meet some of Rio’s sailing stars as many will be at the show. It is an incredible event, with so much to see and do. If you have not been before I recommend you make it a date this month. For a taster of what to expect turn to page 27. Whether you were watching sailing, taking part in events or just enjoying time afloat I hope your summer has been a good one. Sadly for some, time spent by the water ended in tragedy. Despite the RNLI #Respect the Water campaign and plenty of warnings in TV news bulletins and weather forecasts there were a number deaths this summer. Although the stormy weather is believed to have been a contributory factor in some of these deaths, it raises questions about safety around the UK’s coast. This is both in terms of public awareness of the issues and the presence of lifeguards. Safety around the Jurassic coast has also been making news. Falling rocks and dangerous cliffs are not to be taken lightly and yet not all visitors are using common sense and are putting

their lives, and those of others, at risk. Rescue services do a great job, but they cannot patrol the entire coast, and so the public needs to be sensible about which beaches they use and take note of warning signs. I received a letter from Martin Watts who had a dinghy outboard motor stolen while moored in Rothesay Inner Harbour on Bute. Martin, who was on board asleep at the time of the theft, said: “Since the event, we have looked at how many people in Scotland secure their dinghy outboards and are surprised how many do not, even though this is a requirement of most, if not all, insurance companies. My insurance broker tells me they have had instances of thefts from all over the Scotland, even from remote islands and this event just shows how daring some people are.” Martin has passed on tips for others in the hope of preventing further thefts: “We have now painted on the engine number, the yacht name, yacht club initials and some distinctive colour flashes. When we are at home and the yacht is in its marina, then the engine will be in the boat and when we are out cruising, we will have better locks and will not bother with an engine cover, so that people can see the distinctive markings.” Hopefully you have not been the victim of theft, but we would be interested to hear anymore theft prevention tips. HMS DARING JOINS FIGHT AGAINST ‘IS’
FAMILIES bid a tearful farewell to loved ones as the 8,000 ton Royal Navy warship HMS Daring set sail from Portsmouth to join the UK’s campaign against Daesh, also known as Islamic State. On this, her third deployment, the £1 billion Type 45 destroyer and her 190-strong crew will use the ship’s sophisticated radar and missile systems to protect US aircraft carriers as they launch strikes in Iraq and Syria. Taking over from HMS Defender, Daring’s weapons include the Sea Viper Missile with a range of 70 miles. This can provide a shield against fighter planes, drones and anti-ship missiles. HMS Daring’s other task while away will be to protect the Royal Navy’s annual deployment to the Middle East. She will protect the flagship HMS Ocean, which will assume command of the maritime counter-Daesh effort in the Gulf later this year.
As well as providing air defence to Ocean, Daring will mitigate the threat of waterborne attack, carrying Royal Navy and Royal Marine boarding parties to counter pirates, terrorists and smugglers. The ship’s Commanding Officer, Commander Philip Dennis, said: “HMS Daring has been through intense training to be in a position to take on this deployment and I am proud of my ship’s company for all their hard work in getting to this state of readiness. “We will be sailing in support of an important task and we take up the reins of this mission from a host of Royal Navy ships which have gone before us. We look forward to following on from their hard work and success.” Daring first launched in 2006 and in her 10 years of service has undertaken diplomatic missions, helped those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and tackled pirates.
SAILING STARS AT BOAT SHOW FROM PAGE ONE: Fresh from their medal winning performances in Rio, the British Sailing Team will help celebrate the start of this year’s Southampton Boat Show. Actress Michelle Keegan, known for her role on Coronation Street, is also set to appear at this year’s Show on 16 September. An enthusiast of being out on the water, Michelle will help kick off the 10 days of fun and attractions. Michelle, whose role in the BBC drama Our Girl and the forthcoming ITV drama Tina and Bobby, are amongst her current projects said: “I am thrilled to be opening the Southampton Boat Show this year. “As an avid fan of all types of activity on the water, I am really excited to spend some time at the show, soaking up the atmosphere and experiencing some of the brilliant attractions on offer.” Incorporating one of Europe’s largest purpose-built marinas, the Southampton Boat Show offers visitors an exciting selection of new attractions. With hundreds of boats on display, including 330 on the marina itself and over 2km of pontoons, this year’s event is set to be another show stopper. Show attractions include the new Festival Stage featuring a line-up of live
music, fashion shows and expert talks. On the water there will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to try an array of activities from experiencing firsthand what life aboard an ocean racing yacht is really like to trying Stand Up Paddleboarding. Feature boats will include the Norwegian three-masted sailing barque, Team GB’s gold medal winner Giles Scott. Image: Rick Tomlinson

SUNSAIL’S MILESTONE
Sunsail’s Portsmouth-based fleet has taken more than half a million people out on the water since Sunsail was founded in 1974. To celebrate Sunsail invited the 500,000th sailor, Richard Hurley from Deloitte, aboard one of the Sunsail’s Match First 40s during the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. He was presented with a Crewsaver 30th anniversary limited edition lifejacket, a bottle of Chilgrove gin and Tinwood sparkling wine as well as receiving a certificate from Helena Lucas MBE along with Chairman of the British Marine Federation Sarah Dhanda. Work on new lights in Portsmouth harbour to help guide the Queen Elizabeth Class carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, is nearing completion. The final construction stage involves lifting the superstructures onto the pile foundations driven in earlier in the year. The 14 steel structures, which will rise 30m from the seabed, provide a platform for the lights that will be used to precisely position the two new aircraft carriers, the first of which will arrive at the city’s naval base in the spring. The lights are powered by a combination of solar panels and batteries and will only be lit when the carriers are either approaching or leaving their berths at Portsmouth. There should be little impact on recreational boaters apart from the new navigational aids to be aware of and, eventually, the moving of the channel lateral marks. Philip Wise, Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s Principal Project Manager, said: “The navigation lights are essential to ensure the safe passage of the carriers into the naval base at Portsmouth. The work to install them represents a significant step forward in our preparations for the arrival of
the two new ships which will be the largest ever constructed for the Royal Navy.” The QEC Carriers will displace up to 65,000 tonnes of water when they arrive. To accommodate their vast size and bow design over three million cubic metres of clay, sand and gravel has been removed from two miles of Portsmouth Harbour, covering an area the size of more than 200 football pitches. In total around £100 million is being spent by the Ministry of Defence to ready the base for the carriers, the biggest and most powerful ships in the Royal Navy’s history. At 280m, the HMS Queen Elizabeth is longer than the Houses of Parliament (265m). And its length is greater than the height of the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth (170m). Minister for the Armed Forces, Mike Penning MP, said: “These carriers will spearhead Britain’s sea power for the next 50 years, keeping our nation safe at home and protecting our interests abroad.” See http://bit.ly/2c9D39Y for an infographic showing where the lights will be positioned.

BIGGEST RACE WEEK
With an entry of 401 boats, and 625 individual competitors afloat, Chichester Harbour Race Week 2016 was the biggest for a decade - and almost certainly the largest dinghy event in the UK. A GOLDEN PIER
Sheikh Abid Gulzar has been defending his decision to paint parts of the Grade Two listed Eastbourne Pier gold after angering some locals. Mr. Gulzar told The Eastbourne Herald: “I made a pledge when I bought the pier I would make it great again - and that is what I am doing. It is taking a lot of time and costing a lot of money.” According to the Telegraph Historic England has stopped further work until Mr. Gulzar obtains permission by submitting a retrospective planning application to Eastbourne council.

Competitors at this year’s Cowes Week regatta and summer visitors to the harbour will undoubtedly have noticed that the new Outer Harbour Breakwater at Cowes is now complete. Harbour Master Capt. Stuart McIntosh said: “We are very pleased to see the new breakwater in place; it has made a tremendous difference to the harbour and inside the breakwater the water is now calm. “The next phase will be the extension to the existing Shrape breakwater, which is another approximately 58m in length and this will complete the protection to provide a truly sheltered harbour.” In addition to the Shrape extension, the next phases of the Outer Harbour Project will see the dredging of a new
Eastern Channel to provide a secondary deep-water access to the east of the harbour to replace the present Small Craft Channel. Cowes Harbour Commission’s project partner over the past 10 years for the OHP is the government’s Homes and Communities Agency. Capt. McIntosh said: “The HCA currently have Camper & Nicholsons, the well known marina operators, and Westcourt Real Estate as their development partners for the East Cowes regeneration project and they will deliver the marina section, ‘Victoria Quay’. “Works are planned to commence next year although it is still dependent on some final conditions between the HCA and their developers, which we hope will be finalised in the near future.”
Dinghies take over the Thames The annual London Regatta for sailing dinghies will be hosted by Greenwich Yacht Club on 2 October. The Thames Barrier will operate its annual full closure test from 08.25 to 18.25 that day, which means the River Thames will temporarily be a non-tidal waterway and commercial traffic will be unable to sail up and down it. It creates a unique and safe day once a year for dinghy sailors without a
formal ‘tidal water’ qualification to sail and race on this stretch of the Thames in a great festival atmosphere. The dinghy racing will take place on a series of courses marked out on the River Thames between the Thames Barrier and the Emirates Cable Car. Greenwich Yacht Club welcomes interest to compete from all other London sailing centres and clubs with any class of boat. dinghy@greenwichyachtclub.co.uk

News Snaps HULL OF A DAY
A sailor found sitting on his yacht’s upturned hull, 20 miles off the County Wexford coast, Ireland was rescued by Waterford Coast Guard helicopter after triggering his PLB. A Coast Guard spokesman highlighted the importance of observing two important safety rules at sea: a capacity to stay afloat if you do fall in the water and an ability to communicate or raise the alert.
SHIPWRECK FOUND
The wreck of the Darlwyne, which disappeared in heavy seas in 1966 off the Cornish coast with the loss of 23 adults and eight children, is believed to have been found. For the 50th anniversary, BBC Inside Out South West worked with a dive team to uncover what happened. The team believed the original search was not carried out in the right location and they have now found metalwork, which they believe could belong to Darlwyne, at a new site. Changes in maritime safety resulted from the tragedy.
Arson damages classic yacht A recently restored classic yacht has been the victim of an arson attack. Altricia, which was a centrepiece at this year’s London Boat Show, had completed a three year restoration at Mylor Yacht Harbour. Peter said: “It was all very distressing, especially after all the time and work which I and the fantastic Mylor team put into restoring this beautiful boat. “Altricia has been fully surveyed since the fire – and the main thing now is
that the experts at Mylor Yacht Harbour know her so well and they know exactly what needs to be done to bring her back to the perfect state she was in for the boat show.” 50-year-old Altricia is a McGruer 8m Cruiser-Racer and had been in storage near owner Peter Methven’s home. The adjacent hay-barn was set alight in an arson attack and consequently she suffered serious heat damage and blistering to her starboard side.

NEWCOMERS TROPHY FOR COWES WEEK
‘send in the navy’ There are fresh concerns that the UK’s coastal security is under threat from people smugglers. Another group of migrants, the eighth since March, has been caught attempting to reach Britain’s coast using a small boat. The six men were rescued from an inflatable dinghy off the Kent coast by the Border Force cutter HMC Valiant. It is believed smugglers dropped the group within sight of land. The small boat did not have an outboard motor and would therefore have found it difficult to successfully reach the coast. According to the National Crime Agency smugglers are being paid up to £13,500 by migrants hoping to reach the UK.
Although there are five Border Force vessels only three are currently available to patrol the UK’s 7,000 miles of shoreline. One has been deployed to the Mediterranean and another is having maintenance carried out. According to the Home Office, radar and aerial surveillance is being used and a further eight boats have been ordered, but a full deployment is not expected until the end of 2017. In a letter to Home Secretary Amber Rudd, Dover’s Conservative MP Charlie Elphicke has called for further patrols in the Channel. “Security in the English Channel is not strong enough. There is a rising threat from people-trafficking by yachts and
small boats. The New Dover Patrol should be led by the Marines as they have great expertise in countering peopletrafficking and attacks on shipping around the world. “The Marines have the unique set of skills required to do this job and we now need to see their skills deployed at home. “It is hard to protect the UK coastline when you have just three ships. We need urgently to beef up our defences. “We need more ships on patrol in the English Channel. The government should recall Royal Naval Units patrolling the borders of Mediterranean nations who have more border control vessels than we do.”

Insight into Britain’s boating
The British Youth Sailing Team won eight medals and were crowned Nations Cup winners for the first time at the 2016 EUROSAF Youth European Championships, Neusiedl am See, Austria. The EUROSAFs, which take place annually, see Europe’s top youth sailors come together to battle for European honours. The team was represented by two boats in each class, with sailors having been selected from the 2016 RYA Youth National Championships in April.
Jeanne Socrates, 74, is hoping to become the oldest person to sail solo, non-stop around the world. The record for the oldest person is currently held by a 71-year-old Japanese man. However if successful Jeanne will become a double record holder. In 2012/2013, after 259 days at sea, she became the oldest woman to sail solo, non-stop around the world. Leading up to her October departure, Jeanne will be in Victoria, Canada doing maintenance work on her sail boat, the Nereida, and packing the provisions she will need for the seven to eight months at sea. Jeanne will be raising money for the RNLI. svnereida.com Next month All at Sea will be chatting to Jeanne ahead of her departure.

QUAY CHANGES
British Marine has released new research exploring the profile, behaviour and purchasing dynamics of UK boating enthusiasts and boat owners. The Boaters and Boat Owners Survey is an important benchmark to analyse and formulate future developments in the marine industry. A useful area is understanding how to bring more people into boating. The survey showed that whilst the perceived cost of boating is historically considered a barrier for non-boaters, it appears that a lack of access and involvement in a community geared towards boating and not engaging with it as a child, all have an equally detrimental impact on participation. When surveyed, nearly 60 per cent of non-boaters listed not knowing anyone who owns a boat as a reason for not participating, whilst 22.2 per cent said they
Image: OnEdition
would not know where to start and 29.6 per cent put it down to not taking part in boating as a child. This is relative to the 48.2 per cent of non-participants who listed cost as a reason for their inactivity. When it comes to skills, the majority of boaters (55.7 per cent) learn through formal qualifications, many on hire and charter holidays, which are an important avenue to long-term participation. For boaters formal qualifications remain an important aspect of their lifestyle. A significant portion of participants (23.7 per cent) undertake further training for personal development or to benchmark their skill level. Lymington Harbour Commissioners have started an eight week public consultation on proposals to redevelop the Town Quay area to meet changing market requirements for more walk ashore visitor berths. The Commissioners believe that it is essential to reconfigure the visitor moorings in order to provide the type of mooring facilities expected by modern yachtsmen, and to maintain the vibrancy of the Town Quay area as a tourist destination.

16-25 SEPTEMBER 2016
SAIL FOR GOLD ROADSHOWS ALMOST 1,300 people inspired by Rio 2016 tried sailing and windsurfing for the first time as the RYA Sail for Gold Roadshow toured Britain during the Olympic sailing regatta. Eight venues welcomed anyone to ‘have a go’ for free as Britain ended the 2016 Olympics as the top performing sailing nation with two golds and a silver medal. As well as hundreds of volunteers at the host clubs and centres helping to get newcomers to the sport afloat, visitors could also enjoy tuition and be inspired by British Sailing Team members who attended every Roadshow to help celebrate the achievements of their teammates in Rio and encourage people to get into sailing. It is not too late to give sailing a go as there are more Try Sailing events nationwide throughout September as the Olympic glow carries into the excitement of the Paralympics. Turn the page to read All at Sea’s Olympic round-up.
WATCHING THE EXTREME THE Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race’s Official Timekeeper, Elliot Brown, mounted a watch to one of the race yachts. After an 11 months at sea and a 41,000 mile circumnavigation including six ocean crossings, it was still ticking, living up to the company’s motto ‘Built to go the distance’. The watch survived punishing storms, hurricane force-winds (86mph), massive waves (90ft), extreme heat (36C), shocks including a yacht knockdown, vibration, freezing cold temperatures and corrosive saltwater. See the video on the All at Sea Facebook page: www.facebook.com/allatseanewspaper Elliot Brown has produced 1000 special edition Clipper Race crew member watches. elliotbrownwatches.com
ILLUSTRIOUS END
AFTER months of speculation the MoD has announced that the former aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious is to be scrapped in Turkey raising around £2 million for the ministry. It had been hoped that all or part of the ship could be kept here for heritage purposes. The MoD said: “While a number of bids were received, none proved to be viable.” The ship was in service for 32 years before ending its working life in 2014. Her sister ships met the same fate. HMS Ark Royal was scrapped for £2.8m in 2013, while HMS Invincible was sold for about £2m in 2011.
ICE-CREAM AFLOAT A floating ice-cream parlour broke down in the Solent for the second time in as many months. Mark Harker, the Cowes RNLI lifeboat helm, said: “I think he was a little embarrassed to call on the lifeboat again. But at least he turned down potential customers from a passing RIB when we began the tow, although he did previously offer free cornets to our crew!”

toyko here we come... After Great Britain’s was once again the top performing sailing nation at the Olympic Games all eyes are turning to Tokyo 2020 and preparing for the next Olympic regatta in Enoshima Yacht Harbor.
Golds for Giles Scott (Finn) and Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (470 Women) plus Nick Dempsey’s RS:X windsurfing silver ensured Britain topped the sailing nation table again, making it four of the last five Olympics. British Sailing Team Manager Stephen Park said: “It has been a challenging regatta and it has been fantastic one. There have been some great performances and history made in terms of Nick becoming the most successful male windsurfer ever, winning the women’s double handed 470 gold medal for the first time with Hannah and Saskia and Giles keeping that Finn gold medal within Team GB for 20 years.” Now that the Olympics are over a number of the British Sailing Team support staff will be in Rio for the Paralympic sailing regatta, which takes place between 12 - 17 September. Luke and Chris, partners for four years as young 470 sailors, teamed back up just eight months ago after Elliot Willis, who Patience had campaigned with for the Rio Olympic cycle, was diagnosed with cancer. Despite their lack of preparation time, the Brits posted eight results inside the top six from their 11 races. But a race six disqualification, combined with an opening race 21st and another 20th ultimately ended their medal hopes.
n Team GB: Saskia Clark & Hannah Mills n World ranking no.4 n Rio 2016: GOLD Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark upgraded their London 2012 silver to gold. With a 20-point advantage over their nearest challengers, Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie, the pair just had to successfully complete the double points Medal Race without disqualification or retiring. Saskia said: “I cannot stop smiling. It has been amazing winning a medal with one of my best mates and Joe Glanfield, our coach, is an absolute legend. We are going to have some drinks with our friends, our families and the whole British Sailing Team who have been here the whole way. We would not be here without them.”

RS:X – Men
Finn – Men
n Team GB: Giles Scott n World ranking no.1 n Rio 2016: GOLD World number one Giles Scott guaranteed Olympic Finn gold on his Games debut before the Medal Race had even taken place. Scott’s victory means that Britain has now won the Finn men’s heavyweight dinghy class at the last five Olympics – Iain Percy (Sydney 2000), Ben Ainslie (Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012) and Giles Scott (Rio 2016). Giles said: “If you had asked me if I would win the Olympic Games with a race to spare I would have said absolutely not because of Rio as a venue.”
n Team GB: Nick Dempsey n World ranking no.9 n Rio 2016: SILVER n Gold: Dorian van Rijsselberghe (NED) Windsurfer Nick Dempsey won Britain’s first sailing medal, a silver, of Rio 2016 in the men’s RS:X class. Nick is the most decorated male windsurfer in Olympic history. The silver medal is five-time Olympian Dempsey’s second consecutive Olympic silver and his third Games medal in total having first been on the podium at Athens 2004. Nick said: “Being the most decorated male Olympic windsurfer is awesome, something I am incredibly proud of. I have been working for a long time, and it is very hard to stay at the top for that long. I am not sure I can do it again. I would love to if I could.”
Image: British Sailing Team
n Team GB: Luke Patience & Chris Grube n World ranking no.3 n Rio 2016: 5th n Gold: Sime Fantela & Igor Marenic (CRO)
Laser - Men n Team GB: Nick Thompson n World ranking no.3 n Rio 2016: 6th n Gold: Tom Burton (AUS) Nick Thompson admitted Olympic success is something that “still burns inside me” but will not rush into making any decisions about whether he now turns his attention to Tokyo after finishing his Rio 2016 Laser quest in sixth. Thompson went into the double medal points Medal Race still with an outside shot of claiming a podium spot, but after crossing the line in eighth he maintained sixth position.
49er – Men n Team GB: Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign n World ranking no.33 n Rio 2016: 6th n Gold: Peter Burling & Blair Tuke (NZL) Dylan and Alain went into the double points Medal Race still harbouring hopes of finishing their Games debut on the podium before an ill-timed capsize at the fourth mark put paid to their medal ambitions. Dylan said: “We spent a lot of days here, and it has made a massive difference to our campaign. The team did a really good job in preparing our sailors for such a difficult venue. But ultimately it was a really tricky venue and we did not quite manage to get it together.”
49erFX – Women n Team GB: Charlotte Dobson & Sophie Ainsworth n World ranking no.22 n Rio 2016: 8th n Gold: Martine Grael & Kahena Kunze (BRA) Charlotte Dobson and Sophie Ainsworth admitted their first Olympic Games had been a “magical experience” after ending their Rio 2016 49erFX campaign in eighth. The 49erFX was a new class for Rio and it undoubtedly delivered some of the most exciting racing of the Games, no more so than the thrilling downwind sprint to the finish that ultimately saw Brazil’s Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze grab gold ahead of Alex Maloney and Molly Meech by just two seconds.
Laser Radial – Women n Team GB: Alison Young n World ranking no.4 n Rio 2016: 8th n Gold: Marit Bouwmeester (NED) Alison won the Medal Race to end her regatta in eighth overall. After the race Alison revealed she suffered a broken ankle in a training accident eight weeks out from the Games and had undergone an intensive rehab programme to get her onto the Olympic start line. But the 29-year-old was adamant the injury had not hindered her performance in Rio.
Nacra 17 – Mixed n Team GB: Ben Saxton & Nicola Groves n Rio 2016: 9th n Gold: Santiago Lange & Cecilia Carranza Saroli (ARG) Ben Saxton and Nicola Groves were left reflecting on an “awesome Olympic experience” after finishing their Rio Nacra 17 campaign in ninth. This was the first Games the Nacra 17 had been contested at. Ben said: “Nic and I went out with the approach to try and attack the Games, we started off the event really well and then did not manage to close it out. But we have done ourselves proud, plus we have had fun. The Olympics are awesome.”
RS:X – Women
n Team GB: Bryony Shaw n World ranking no.1 n Rio 2016: 9th n Gold: Charline Picon (FRA) Bryony Shaw admitted she felt “unfulfilled” after finishing her Rio 2016 in ninth. The Beijing 2008 bronze medallist sailed a brilliantly consistent second half of the regatta with scores all inside the top five to claw her way back into Medal Race contention, after the opening six races had put her firmly on the back foot. Bryony said: “I felt unfulfilled after London and I feel unfulfilled here. Any time you do not medal or you feel that you underperformed it is tough to take.” www.rya.org.uk/Rio2016 Turn to page 18 to read the All at Sea Paralympic Games guide.

SUN SHINES ON COWES WEEK The Artemis Challenge winner Phaedo 3. Image: Paul Wyeth
HUNDREDS of boats and thousands of competitors and spectators enjoyed another successful Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. This year’s Cowes Week began with bright sun and tight racing in a glorious 14 - 16 knot sea breeze, with occasional stronger gusts. Racing on day one began after a twohour postponement to allow the breeze to build and by the first start of the day, for the J/70 class, it had filled in across the course at a consistent 10-12 knots. The sunshine and good racing conditions featured for much of the week with excellent racing across all the classes. The tenth Artemis Challenge saw two state-of-the-art multihulls, Lloyd Thornburg’s MOD70 Phaedo 3 and the M32 Tranwall, headed off for what they hoped would be a record-breaking blast around the Isle of Wight.
The Women into Sailing careers programme will promote and help young women to work professionally within the marine sector. Dee said: “I am passionate about helping to advance women in the world of sailing and with this campaign, we can give many females the opportunity to join this fantastic industry.” Dee is a past winner of the Slingsby Ladies Day Trophy, presented during Cowes Week. Recognising the outstanding contribution, commitment or achievement of women in sailing, the trophy has been awarded for the past 10 years on Ladies Day. This year’s winner was Hannah Stodel, British Paralympic Phaedo 3 flew sailor. She has around most of represented GB the course but three times in was slowed when the summer she had to tack up Paralympics and, the eastern Solent, this month, will eventually finishing compete once again in a time of 56 with John Robertson Hannah Stodel (right) seconds over three and Steve Thomas at with Libby Greenhalgh. hours. Rio. It is such a confidence booster, and it has certainly made my Cowes Week.“ After strong racing all week, towards the end of the regatta the final results for all the classes flooded in. On the penultimate day of the event the Isle of Wight and Solent were bathed with unbroken sun. Line honours and an impressive sixth race win on corrected time saw Adam Gosling’s new JPK10.80 Yes! achieve the IRC Class 3 win and victory in Black Group overall, for the fourth consecutive year. Adam said: “We always focus our year on this week so to win Black Group is everything we ever want – it is absolutely fantastic. This is a brand-new boat, we
have only done three regattas so far, and are still learning how to make the boat go better, so we really did not expect to win again.” High pressure, brilliant sun and a solid westerly breeze again delivered perfect conditions for the last day of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. The bulk of the White Group dayboat classes completed their series on the final day, but Nigel Grogan’s Rehydrated had already won the Squib class with a day to spare, a performance that also saw him win White Group overall. 2017: 29 July – 5 August For the complete results see: www.aamcowesweek.co.uk Dee Caffari MBE launched UKSA’s Women into Sailing careers initiative. reat Britain will have a team of around 260 athletes competing at the Rio Paralympics across 19 sports, and this will include six sailors. Expectations are high for the entire British team as they have never finished outside the top five in the medal table. At London 2012 they finished a brilliant third behind China and Russia. Sailing was first introduced at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games as a demonstrative sport before becoming a medal sport at the 2000 Sydney Paralympic Games. Athletes around the world compete in three events, which are non-gender specified: single-person keelboats, three-person keelboats and two-person keelboats.

At the last Paralympic Games, in London, 80 athletes competed in the three sailing medal events with the British team bringing home a gold (Helena Lucas, 2.4mR) and bronze (Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, SKUD 18). Helena was the first ever female winner of the male dominated 2.4mR Paralympic class and Britain’s first ever Paralympic sailing gold medallist. She is hoping to repeat her success at Rio. For the Rio Games, alongside Helena, will be 2012 bronze medallists Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell in the SKUD 18 class and the trio of Stephen Thomas, John Robertson and Hannah Stodel in the Sonar, hoping to make up for the disappointment of narrowly missing a podium place in the last Olympics.

SAILING DROPPED
However it could be the last chance for all the sailors to win an Olympic medal after the International Paralympic Committee announced in January 2015 that sailing and seven-a-side football were being dropped from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. The primary reason stated for this decision was that sailing “did not fulfil the IPC Handbook’s minimum criteria for worldwide reach” which specifies sports and disciplines must be widely and regularly practised in a minimum of 32 countries and three IPC regions to be considered for inclusion into the Paralympic Games. Since the decision to drop sailing, a great deal of work has been done to increase the sport’s chances of reselection for the 2024 Paralympics, the decision for which should be taken in 2018. This includes looking at the equipment used and trying to widen its appeal by lowering costs and maintenance, improving logistics, widening the range of sailors that can take part, as well as better showcasing the sport.

Penalties are awarded to boats that are found to have broken a rule, in which they must perform turns before being allowed to continue around the course. At the end of the 11 races, each sailor or team will have their worst individual race score disregarded before

the remaining points are added up to form an overall score. The team with the lowest total points at the end of the racing wins the event. Sailing team leader and RYA Olympic and Paralympic Manager Stephen Park OBE said: “There is no doubt that Rio is an incredibly challenging environment to compete in, and the sailors will be focusing all their energies on learning the intricacies of racing in Guanabara Bay.”

Defending Paralympic champion Helena Lucas was the first athlete to be named for either Rio Games when she was selected in April 2015. John Robertson, Hannah Stodel and Stephen Thomas will be competing in their fourth Games. Alexandra and Niki are already two-time Paralympians, having made their debut together in the SKUD 18 class at Beijing 2008.

NEW KIT ACTION CAMERA
The TG-Tracker camera can record in the harshest environments. It is shockproof to a height of 2.1m, crushproof to a weight of 100kg and waterproof to 30m below sea level. The camera can sense acceleration, altitude or depth and temperature as well as direction of movement – in addition to latitude and longitude. This gives extreme sports enthusiasts a complete picture of where they were, what was happening and how they were performing at the moment any given image was captured. The TG-Tracker has a detachable grip, ultrawide angle lens, five-axis image stabilisation and a flip-out LCD monitor – so you can easily frame and shoot blur-free, by hand, in harsh conditions. BOOMSTRUT
When sailing there is always the danger of the boom moving on board the vessel due to wind or change of direction and this can prove a hazard for all on board, especially those at the helm. The use of a boom has been the cause of many an incident on sailboats, and is the most common cause of sailing injury, highlighting the importance of the Boomstrut. Its main purpose is to support the boom in order to reduce the movement and therefore greatly reduce the risk of injury. Barton Marine’s Boomstrut comes in six sizes to suit yachts up to 12m in size.

LEOPARD DEBUT AVAILABLE FOR CHARTER
MALLORCA CALLING
Sunsail’s base in Palma de Mallorca is developing as a destination for sailors with more experience. It is easily accessible from many UK airports and has an array of boats including Sunsail 41, 47, and 444 and 36i yachts. The coastline of Mallorca has hundreds of beaches, coves and sheltered bays, only accessible by sea. Ashore there are ancient towns and villages, vineyards and orange groves. As a level 3 sailing ground, the Balearic Sea makes rewarding sailing for more experienced sailors due to its strong winds. The Cabrera Archipelago National Park is 10km off the south coast with spectacular underwater meadows. It is one of the best scuba diving areas in the Mediterranean. The islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera are also within an easy sailing distance. Sailing experience at level 3 with at least an ICC or an RYA Day Skipper qualification or above is required. The sailing season runs from April to October. Prices start from £2,552 for a bareboat charter based on a Sunsail 41. Flights and transfers can be booked individually at a supplement. www.sunsail.co.uk
The Leopard 45 will make her world debut at the Annapolis Boat Show in October. The catamaran features a 3 cabin-3 head and a 4 cabin-4 head layout. The 3 cabin layout includes 2 cabins in the port hull, leaving the starboard hull entirely dedicated to the owner’s suite, complete with work station and large private washroom. Franck Bauguil, Leopard’s Vice President of Sales and Product Development, said: “The Leopard 45 is the logical evolution of the Leopard 40. Panoramic views of the ocean have been improved with larger and sharper windows, giving a full view forward from the aft cockpit.” In addition to private ownership through Leopard Catamarans, this yacht will be available for ownership through the Sunsail Yacht Ownership Program, as the Sunsail 454, and the Moorings Yacht Ownership Program, as the Moorings 4500. The Leopard 45 will also be available for charter vacations in select destinations worldwide through Sunsail and The Moorings. www.sunsail.co.uk www.moorings.co.uk

Changes to the layout will see Ocean Hall and Windward Hall merged with an additional 550 square meters of space to create a new look Ocean Hall. In further layout changes Beneteau and Jeanneau move from their historical space on the land to a much bigger display on the marina. Murray Ellis, British Marine Boat Shows’ Managing Director, said: “We are thrilled to announce this fantastic new presence from both Beneteau and Jeanneau at this year’s Southampton
Boat Show together with fantastic new launches and a debut presence from a host of global brands. “We are always looking for ways to better the show each year for both visitors and exhibitors alike and I have no doubt that the boats on show coupled with the new layout and enhanced visitor experience will once again position the show as Europe’s biggest boating festival.”
LUXURY LIVING
Ladies Day will be on 22 September. It is the perfect excuse to get dressed up with the girls for a day full of fun, plus indulge in a glass of champagne whilst overlooking the marina. Ladies can enjoy the day with fine dining and a glass of bubbly or simply sit back and listen to Might Be Bublé and enjoy the fashion shows, and the boats of course. If a day of luxury sounds tempting then the Admiral’s Club could be for you. There is seating throughout the lounge, with access to a range of food, a pay bar plus the lounge’s outdoor balcony. This exclusive ticket also includes afternoon tea with a selection of delicious cakes. Tickets from £70. Turn the page for a huge selection of boats that will be on show at Southampton.

This year’s Southampton Boat Show will have plenty of attractions both on and off the water.

ON LAND
There is plenty for kids – and big kids - at this year’s Southampton Boat Show, now in its 48th year, from Bumper Boats to a huge sandpit. ● In the Arena Bumper Boats (£3) is a new children’s attraction for those aged 3 - 13. Children can hop on board their own Bumper Boat and steer their boat around others on the Bumper Boat Pool. Once they have mastered steering the boat they can also activate the built-in water cannon for added fun. ● A Festival Stage in Solent Park will have live music, talks from industry experts and fashion shows. Music fans can enjoy the likes of Fake Tan, Might Be Buble and HRH Queen. ● As well as the Fashion Show on the Festival Stage visitors will be asked to come and prepare for a Guinness World Record attempt to create a picture of a boat using people. This is a unique opportunity to be part of history. ● The Festival Stage area is home to the Guinness Bar and the Food Village. It is the place to relax in a deck chair, rock out or simply meet with friends for a chat and bite to eat. ● There is also a sandpit in the Festival Stage area. Buckets and spades will be provided as will beach Jenga and Connect 4. Staying on land, visitors will be able to explore the 18ft Sailfish, Marlin, and meet its owner, Dave Selby, fresh from completing his 300-mile charity sail. Over at stand J390 visitors can speak to West System International’s technical experts and get advice about professional applications of epoxy for boat building, repair and maintenance. The team will also be showcasing their epoxy expertise through demonstrations, which will be held at 12:00 and 14:30 each day.
LOOK TO THE SKY
Look up to the sky over 17 – 18 September and you will be able to watch the Raiders, the official parachute display team of the Royal Navy.
● On the Water’s ‘Get Afloat’ is supported by the team at Rockley. Visitors aged 8 - 16 will have the chance to discover dinghy sailing and Stand up Paddleboarding. Get Afloat will either teach them the sailing basics or offer hints and tips to help them improve. ● Try-a-Boat sessions from On the Water will give visitors the opportunity to experience being out on the water on a variety of craft from RIBS and powerboats to yachts and cruisers. Book your free ride at the booking point in the Arena just past the show entrance. ● Wet Wheels is a 9m Cheetah Catamaran that has been specially adapted for wheelchair access. Wetwheels will be running rides for disabled people and wheelchair users ● The Artemis tall ship will take centre stage at the marina. One of the most imposing three-masted sailing barques of her time, visitors will be able to climb aboard and kids can get interactive asking the crew questions and seeing what life on an Ocean going Tall Ship is like. ● The Global Challenge Sailing Experience offers the opportunity to get on board a 72ft round the world ocean race yacht on a unique adventure right in the heart of the Solent. This is a chance to get actively involved in all aspects of sailing this exciting yacht under the guidance of professional crew and is ideal for novice and experienced sailors. From £59. ● The Battle Of The Classes Pursuit Race will see dinghies launch from the nearby Southampton Water Activities Centre and compete on a course laid just off the boat show marina. ● Team Britannia is a multi-million pound British bid to design and build the fastest and most fuel efficient semi wave-slicing powerboat to circumnavigate the globe for the UIM world record (currently held by the New Zealander Pete Bethune at 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes). The boat will be launched at the show and on 23 October Team Britannia will set off on the record attempt. ● The Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, which is made up of 12 regional finals across the UK and Ireland, finishes the season off with a head-to-head national final at the show on 18 September. Talking about the show Greg Munford, British Marine Boat Shows’ Chairman, said: “As Britain’s biggest boating festival, the Southampton Boat Show is much-loved by sail and powerboat enthusiasts alike and one of the leaders in the global boating calendar. Helping plan this year’s event with all its new attractions to entertain the diversity of visitors and more importantly, get more people out on to the water has been a fantastic experience. Being a boater myself, the mix of new international and British brands that will be showcasing the latest boats and marine equipment makes this show even more exciting for me to be a part of.”

September 1578 In September 1578 Sir Francis Drake, in the course of his circumnavigation of the world, discovered Cape Horn. This discovery went unused for some time, as ships continued to use the known passage through the Strait of Magellan. Elizabeth I awarded Drake a knighthood in 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588.

To appear menacing and important, often larger than life. A ship’s lookout will search for the ‘loom’ of the land which can sometimes be projected above the horizon by a refraction of the light, thus making it visible far beyond its normal range. The word can also be used to describe the indistinct vision of something seen through a mist. At night the ‘loom’ of shore lights is reflected in the sky.

diary
Lymington Scows They were first built over 100 years ago, but the Lymington Scow is still much admired on the Solent and beyond.
T
here are many things that define being afloat on the Solent. From the twin tides, to the tricky mix between the commercial vessels, including high speed ferries, and the massed fleets of yachts for which the area is such a centre for both racing and cruising, the waters from Hurst eastwards to Bembridge are almost unique. There is, though, one other facet of Solent life that often surprises visiting sailors to the area, with the inshore waters being the spawning area for an amazing ‘family’ of small dinghies, the Solent Scows. These charming 11ft dinghies, with their distinctive dipping lug sails have, over the years, become almost an iconic part of the harbours of the Solent, with the Lymington River Scows being the forerunner and best examples of this genre.
DAN THE BUILDER The first boats were built in 1912 at Lymington by a boat builder known locally as a striking and bizarre character ‘who drank like a fish’. Dan Bran was also illiterate, but eschewing plans, laid up all his boats by eye. And what an eye it was, as his response to a commission from a Captain Nicholson for a sea-kindly small boat resulted in a nicely proportioned, pretty, sharp bowed pram dinghy that he could build for the princely sum of £20. Afloat the new boats were seen to enjoy a good performance and were soon being ‘much admired’ by the larger yachts on the river. Dan Bran was building the boats in a ramshackle workshop close by the open air, salt water pool that is still such a part of Lymington. By the November of 1913 there were
enough of the boats for the formation of a class to be considered, but even as the fleet grew, leisure sailing was about to be curtailed by the outbreak of war. With a return to peace, Lymington Scows were being built at the Berthon boatyard, but by 1921 the cost of a new boat had increased to £40. The cost did not deter interest in the boat, which was already spreading across the Solent to Yarmouth, where building would soon start on building the ‘West Wight’ version of the scow at Theo Smith’s boatyard. The following decade would see the Lymington Scow colonising the whole of the Solent and beyond, with fleets found as far afield as Christchurch and Chichester Harbour. The Solent, though, remained the powerbase for the Class, with Keyhaven, Beaulieu, Cowes and Bembridge all hosting their own fleets. For such a small and other ‘local’ boat the fame of the Lymington Scow would eventually spread far and wide, to the east coast on the River Crouch at Burnham, northwards to Scotland on the Moray Firth and even across to the USA.
A SCOW FIRST? The Lymington Scow would also enjoy an additional claim to fame when, in the early post war years, a mould was taken of a scow and a hull laid up in GRP, making this possibly the first small boat built in this manner. The popularity of the boat runs parallel to the growth in both size and prestige of the Lymington River Sailing Club, which in 1938 would become the Royal Lymington Yacht Club. Once again the war years would interfere with Solent sailing and by the end of the era of austerity that followed, the Scows would face the challenge of newer, faster and more modern looking dinghies. Yet the Scows could show that they were as equally happy with young sailors learning the finer points of sailing, as they were with some of the best (and oldest) known Solent yachtsmen on the helm. MUCH ADMIRED From the outset with Dan Bran, the Lymington Scow story has been enriched by the presence of some amazing personalities, with the likes
Image: LPB Aerial Imagery
of Roly Stafford ensuring that the Class Association was put on a forward looking footing that helped consolidate the position of the Scows into the new millennium. This has also seen the Scows enjoy all the trappings of the mainstream dinghy scene with a Championship open to both adult and under 16 helms and awards for boats that have travelled to far flung and foreign waters. Today, the boats are built by top Lymington boat builder John Claridge, whilst the sails are also made locally by Pete Saunders, which help keep that distinctive Solent flavour to the Scows. With their often colourful sails they certainly catch the admiring eyes of yachtsmen anywhere in the Solent, though few know the 100 year plus history of this most endearing of small boats.

boating people Q&A WITH NICOLA WALSH, MARINA MANAGER AT SWANWICK MARINA WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST AT SWANWICK MARINA?
The people – it is all about the people, so getting to know and building relationships with our berth holders and tenants is very important to me.
WHAT IS COMING UP AT SWANWICK MARINA?
TELL US ABOUT THE ROLE’S BIGGEST CHALLENGES. My biggest challenge will be overseeing and managing Swanwick Marina through phase two of its redevelopment, which I am certain will position it as Premier’s flagship marina and one of the finest on the South Coast.
YOU WERE THE FIRST WOMAN TO ATTAIN THE CERTIFIED MARINA MANAGER QUALIFICATION IN EUROPE. HOW DID YOU FEEL?
I attended an Advanced Marina Managers course in Belgium in 2000 and then having attained the CMM accreditation in 2002 I was surprised to learn that I was the first female to receive this qualification. I did not know about it until then - I was delighted.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW JOB. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO JOIN SWANWICK MARINA?
WHAT IS YOUR BOATING BACKGROUND?
I grew up in Devon and my family always had small day boats when I was young, so being on and around the water comes as second nature to me. I do not own a boat myself but my dad is currently renovating a small fishing boat as a retirement project. I have no doubt I shall be out in the Plymouth Sound with him next summer.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BOATING AND BEING ON THE WATER? It is simply the lifestyle – appealing to both the lifelong boater and someone who is just thinking about taking the plunge.
Swanwick Marina
The next big event at Swanwick will be our annual Used Boat Show, which runs in parallel with the Southampton Boat Show (16 – 25 September). One of our most popular shows, berth holders and visitors can view a fantastic display of power and sail boats from onsite brokerages and then take advantage of our ‘Park and Ride’ service that will take them directly to the Southampton Boat Show.
WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU?
Pete Goss for his heroic rescue in horrendous conditions of a fellow competitor in the 1996/7 Vendee Globe round the world race. Pete is a true motivator but also such a genuinely nice man. He based his sailing from Queen Anne’s Battery Marina in Plymouth, where I was the manager, and I recall he once borrowed my husband’s wet weather gear for one of his races.
TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU.
I have always enjoyed being part of a team and as a young adult I competed nationally in the South West England Athletics Team, which was an amazing experience.
I am excited to have joined the team at Swanwick and thrilled to join Premier Marinas as they continue to grow and invest in their marina portfolio. The team here at Swanwick is really customer focused - the berth holders love them. I am really hoping that my previous Head of Customer Experience role will complement this ethos.

Experts’ forum
Each month, All at Sea invites a leading marine industry expert to share their opinion together with their top tips to help you get the most from your boating.
autumn sailing in the Mediterranean
Paul Mason, principal and chief instructor, Sunsail Agana, Croatia Marine Division, believes that autumn is the best time to explore the Med As a professional sailor and having worked for several years in the sail training and charter industries, I tend to get asked the same questions by my guests. They are usually something along the lines of ‘’What do you do in the winter?’’ and ‘’When are you going to get a real job?‘’. My favourite questions are the ones that go something like this: “When should we book our next holiday with you?’’ or ‘’When should we come back?”. These let us know we have done things right. We get a lot of these and recently they have got me thinking about the best time to go sailing in the Med.
The numbers literally plummet, largely due to the fact that most UK kids are heading back to school. The inevitable outcome of this is that flight costs and charter fees drop too. There are some excellent deals to be had, especially if you are flexible, but the financial benefits are just the icing on the cake.
GREAT AUTUMN CLIMATE For me the real benefit of sailing in the autumn is that the climate is still great, but you get a lot more freedom. The days are still reasonably long and warm, around 18° 25°C during the day in Croatia. Obviously it is a little cooler at night (12° 18°C), but I usually find a long sleeve T-shirt warm enough to wear during the evening.
IS HIGH SEASON THE BEST? Obviously the high season (June, July and August) is the most popular, but this is probably more to do with tradition and school holidays than anything else. Early and late season (March - April/Sept October) offer some truly great sailing out here in Croatia, and they are the perfect months to enrol on a sailing course. However, I believe that the best time for anyone to go sailing in the Med has to be the autumn (September and October). Come September we see a huge decline in the number of tourists.

Also, because the water has been heated by the sun all summer long it is still warm enough to swim, kayak and paddle board comfortably. Those beautiful, deserted anchorages that you see in all the brochures are beautiful and deserted once again, and even if they are not, they will not be full. Plus there is usually a bit more of a breeze around at this time of the year to carry you off to the next bay, should you wish. In fact the wind is generally excellent out here in the autumn. The prevailing wind

directions do tend to vary a bit more than in the summer but 10 - 20kts and reasonably flat seas are the norm, offering great sailing for all. Fewer tourists mean less charter boats, which in turn means that all the exclusive marinas and harbours that usually accommodate hundreds of yachts during the summer now have plenty of space. This negates the need to arrive early for a berth and allows you to make the most of your sailing days and to see places that are nigh on impossible to visit during the summer. All those fantastic restaurants, cocktail bars and exhibits are all still open as usual, and running on their summer schedule, as are the flights, bus and ferry links. CROATIA CALLING If you are visiting, say Croatia, a little later in October, it is quieter and cooler, plus you get to really wind down and embrace the local culture with the islanders as their interests turn to harvesting the local grapes and olives. You can experience the freshest and finest local produce around. www.sunsail.co.uk

WIN COPIES
Harold William ‘Bill’ Tilman was among the greatest adventurers of his time, a pioneering mountaineer and sailor who held exploration above all else. Tilman bought the pilot cutter Mischief not with the intention of retiring from travelling, but to access remote mountains. For 22 years Tilman sailed Mischief and her successors to Patagonia, where he crossed the vast ice cap, and to Baffin Island to make the first ascent of Mount Raleigh. He made trips to Greenland, Spitsbergen and the South Shetlands, before disappearing in the South Atlantic Ocean in 1977. This fascinating read is an account of his first two West Greenland voyages. ALL AT SEA THIS SUMMER S
David Henshall reflects on some of the summer sporting highlights. ailing was certainly headline news over the summer with Cowes Week, the America’s Cup and a certain regatta in Rio grabbing space on the water and in the headlines. But it is a measure of the strength of the sport here in the UK that over the summer the waters around our coasts have been crammed full of sailors. From the vast number of championships All at Sea has picked out just some of the highlights.
29ER CHAMPIONSHIPS Starting down in the South West, the Royal Torbay YC has been hosting the 29er National Championships. The youth focused 29er is the smaller sister to the

Olympic 49er, so this was surely an event that will be the starting point for the UK’s medal prospects in the future. Certainly the standard of sailing amongst the 76 boats was of the highest calibre, which suggests more medal success looking to the future.
505 CHAMPIONSHIPS Moving eastwards, the Sailing Academy at Weymouth and Portland, home to the 2012 Olympic Regatta, saw a very international high class fleet of more than 140 505 dinghies competing for their World Championships, the first time this event has been held in the UK for a decade. It was something of a badge of honour in recent hostings of this premier event that a UK boat would

town. Club and competitors enjoyed the very best of what the media like to call ‘champagne sailing’ with sun, breeze, waves and a well-run competition.
FIREBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS Another location that is well known for running top class events is Hayling Island Sailing Club, at the eastern entrance to the Solent. The horizon wide spread of spinnakers could only mean one thing; the Fireball Championships were in
HORNET EUROPEANS Finally, around the corner into the Thames Estuary, the seaside town of Herne Bay gave a warm welcome to the Hornet Europeans. Here the weather gods were less favourable, sending either no wind at all, or else unrelenting strong
breezes that waged a war of attrition with the competing sailors. Congratulations to everybody involved, from the organisers ashore and afloat to the many competitors who have had a great sailing experience. All At Sea SEPTEMBER 2016
Preparing your navigation Last year Lizzy Foreman took part in the Mini Transat and hopes to race in the Vendee Globe one day. In this series the experienced racer takes us on a journey through the lives of racing sailors looking at the challenge these men and women face. This month preparing your navigation for racing is under the spotlight.
Picture 1
The first part of the road book clearly defines each mark of the course, including its waypoint position and the way it is to be rounded (picture 1) The road book will then go on to split up each leg of the course into sections, stating what to expect between each mark of the course. To avoid having to do any chart work, skippers also often include close up shots of their charts including the latitude and longitude and GPS position of the marks (usually using a screen shot from software such as Adrena or Navionics). Once laminated, these little charts are very quick and easy to use alongside the GPS and can be written on with a chinograph pencil (picture 2). Alongside this, the boat polars will also be included or displayed on deck (picture 3).
“A road book is basically a succinct document that outlines your route around a race course” It has become the norm for modern sailboats to have chartplotters, PCs and tablets running weather routing software with the classic chart staying tucked away under the table. However, this has made many sailors extremely reliant on technological gadgets and less inclined to really study their navigation before casting off the docks. In the Mini 6.50 class only a GPS and paper charts are permitted on board. This meant I had to really2012 study the race All ATthat SeA AUGUST
course before heading offshore, using a ‘road book’ to navigate my way around the course as often wet and windy conditions make it near impossible to do any chart work.
Picture 2
Finally, a road book will also contain laminated copies of the appropriate tidal atlas, with the time of high water and the coefficient clearly stated.
There are many tools that you can use to put your road book together, for example: ROAD BOOKS A little like a sat nav, a road book is n Weather routing software such as basically a succinct document that Adrena, Max Sea and Expedition outlines your route around a race course, n Grib files (free to view on websites highlighting any dangers, strategic such as predictwind.com) options and the predicted weather n Boat polars (a chart dictating which conditions on route. angle and in which wind speed you should use each sail) n Google Maps to study the local topography n Race instructions n Previous race tracks (e.g. on the Yellow Brick website) and reading up on venue specific notes Once you have collected all the relevant information, the basic process to follow to configure your road book is: n Write a list of your waypoints (for both the turning marks & dangers) n Plot your course, either on to a photocopy of the chart or a programme such as Adrena n Identify areas of danger and strategic zones (rocks, strong currents, wind shifts around headlands, traffic separation schemes, strong currents) n Split up the course into sections n Think about local topography effects: wind accelerations, divergence and convergence and consider the tide on each leg of the course n Write down the predicted wind direction and thus your ideal sail n Laminate your tidal atlases and note down the times of high water and the coefficients Finally, remember to put all of your waypoints into your GPS (make sure these are named sensibly and use the same names throughout your road book), and make a make a note of the best time to sleep and eat during the race - see my previous articles for some hints and tips on sleep deprivation and psychology online at www.allatsea.co.uk. A DREAM REALISED Captain Dave Pickston not only tracked down a beautiful boat he loved as a child but has ensured it is back to the standard its Royal passengers would have approved.

F
almouth Pilot Dave Pickston has realised a childhood dream by acquiring and restoring the sturdy classic launch Soleil d’Or which carried Royalty, politicians and other VIPs around the Isles of Scilly between the late 1950s and 1970s. Captain Dave Pickston, who grew up on the islands, traced ‘Sol’ from her early voyages as a passenger boat owned by the Dorrien Smith family of Tresco, via the River Medway and Liverpool, to Cardiff where he was “lucky enough” to buy her last year.
ROYALS & POLITICANS
In her first two decades this 43ft tender carried the Queen Mother, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prime Minister Harold Wilson (who had his holiday home on the Isles of Scilly), Margaret Thatcher when she was Education Secretary and many other Soleil d’Or, newly restored

famous and influential guests of the Dorrien Smith family – all chronicled in the photographs of the late, great Frank Gibson of Gibsons of Scilly. “I knew the Soleil d’Or when I was growing up in the Isles of Scilly and had always admired her elegant lines,” said Dave, who has been a pilot in Falmouth for 17 years and who has spent a lifetime working in the maritime industries. “In those days she had a full time boatman (whose daughter used to babysit for my parents) and under his steady hand proved herself to be a great sea boat. “Knowing that she was built to a very high standard - Burma Teak on Oak - I felt sure that she would still be around and with the help of the National Historic Ships Register, and a couple of harbourmaster friends, I tracked her down to Penarth Marina, Cardiff.”
RESTORATION WORK
Having worked with Mylor Yacht Harbour on his previous boat and knowing the team has expertise on site, Dave took her to them to complete the restoration work begun by her previous owner. Shipwrights Chris Oliver and Reed Downing took her back to bare wood for a full survey, recaulked and repainted her with seven coats, returning her hull colour to its original black. They stripped her masts and spars to re-coat with four coats of Sikkens stain before Will Parkinson set about a sensitive modernisation of her hydraulic steering, diesel engine and fuel systems. “A wonderful, historic vessel like this uses all our marine team’s skills – ancient and modern,” said Project Manager Henry Goldsmith, “and it was fantastic to see her looking so beautiful as she went back into the water and

“A wonderful, historic vessel like this uses all our marine team’s skills – ancient and modern” seeing her as sturdy and reliable as in her early heyday carrying VIPs in the Isles of Scilly.”
OUT & ABOUT
As for her future, Dave Pickston said: “She was launched into a Force 8 whistling down Mylor Creek and performed perfectly. She is now at her new home on Penryn River where work is continuing to bring the deck-side cosmetic work up to scratch. She will mainly be used for family days out during the summer. Who knows – I might even give the sails a try one day!”
Soleil d’Or was built for the Dorrien Smith family in 1956 by Frank Curtis and Pape Bros of Looe and was such an iconic and famous sight that she is replicated in miniature form by the Solent Radio Controlled Model Boat Club (www. srcmbc.org.uk) and can be seen on the water at http://bit.ly/1UEuLGs. Captain Dave Pickston, meanwhile, is looking forward to some more Cornish sunshine to set the full size Sol up for some genteel cruising around the South West and Isles of Scilly. SELL YOUR CLUB
With 2016 proving to be a fantastic year for sailing – from the return of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series to the glory of the Rio 2016 Games and the adventure of the Swallows and Amazons film remake – there has never been a better time to feel inspired and get out on the water.

THE Masterclass
KEEP IT MAINTAINED
Maintaining a website can take up a lot of time and effort. If you have not got a willing volunteer to keep it updated regularly, this can make it look like you have nothing going on, which is an instant turn-off for website visitors.
RYA START BOATING
IT is therefore vital that your club is in a position to make the most of the increased demand. The first place to start is assessing your club’s shop window. This is the public-facing aspect of your club, including website and social media channels. Research shows that people lose interest if they cannot find the information they want after six seconds. With so much competition for people’s attention and leisure time, you need to
make sure your online presence is as sharp as possible to grab attention. The RYA has six simple tips to attract visitors to get afloat with you.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Keep your website homepage clear, well laid out and easy on the eye. Using loud, brash colours and loads of animation can distract the user. Choose a strong and consistent theme and use a couple of good quality images that make your club look welcoming and friendly.
AVOID THE CARDINAL SINS
People need to be able to contact your club and find it easily. Location and directions including a postcode and a contact email address are the most important pieces of information that should be easily accessible on your website. Use clear titles for each and think about embedding a Google map of your location and including images of the club so people can spot it.
The RYA have numerous resources, including Where’s My Nearest and the RYA Start Boating web pages, to help newcomers easily access the sport. RYA-affiliated clubs and centres are encouraged to look at these and share and embed on their website and social media channels.
AVOID THE HARD SELL
Do not put people off before they even get to your gates by bombarding them with information about courses, membership and racing. Notions of expense and commitment can discourage people, while talking about racing introduces something only likely
to terrify someone who has never even been in a boat before. Get people along first, then introduce these things once they have experienced just how fabulous the sport and your club are.
OPEN TO ALL
Give some thought to practices which can unintentionally make people feel excluded because they do not fit traditional stereotypes. It is also important to ensure that your facilities are fully accessible to disabled people. Think about any physical or psychological barriers to participation – can you remove or change these barriers? Disability may include sight or hearing impairments, physical/mobility impairments, mental health and learning difficulties and can affect people of all ages. The RYA offers practical guidance to help clubs become more welcoming and inclusive. Why not sign up to Club Room, the RYA Affiliated Clubs monthly e-newsletter, for more top tips, news, information and advice.

MARINA CHAT MEETING BOATERS AROUND THE UK’S MARINAS
Quay to success Graham and Susan’s yacht – Epoc
Graham and Susan Cope have struck gold with both their yacht and marina. Our current yacht is a Bavaria 33 named Epoc, which we bought in 2012. It is an upgrade from our first ever yacht, a Beneteau 281 that we had owned since 2007. We have berthed both of our yachts at Southampton’s Shamrock Quay as we love it. We are cruisers at heart and think the Solent offers some of the very best sailing. We chose the marina for many reasons including the easy access from the M3 and M27. We live in Buckinghamshire and can be there within an hour-and-a-half, and in no time at all on our yacht, filling the fridge and enjoying a cup of coffee.
GETTING AWAY
Graham loves sailing in the Solent
We love the escapism that berthing at a marina provides; getting down to the boat, taking it out or just staying in the marina and reading a good book. We are away from home and able to enjoy watching the world go by. We also love short hops to local marinas and with MDL’s array of marinas a short sail away, this marina fits us to a tee. As part of the Freedom Berthing package we can use MDL’s network of marinas as much as we like. We like visiting all the Hamble marinas, as well as day trips to Cobb’s Quay Marina in Poole. We really enjoy sailing to Sparkes and Northney Marinas in Chichester Harbour, where we can watch the gorgeous wildlife.
The staff at Shamrock Quay make you feel part of a big boating family and the friendliness of the team is great. The social scene is also excellent; they hold lots of different events from charity parties to BBQs. Our favourite event of the year is taking part in the two-day cruise to St Malo. On site at the marina you have all the facilities you need: boat lift, laundry
facilities, marine trades and services who look after our rigging and launder and repair our sails. The Yellow Welly café is also great to treat yourself in the morning and for dinner Quay FIFTEEN provides some of the finest fish and seafood dishes in Southampton. Give us a wave when you see us on the Solent. www.mdlmarinas.co.uk Susan relaxing on board Epoc

Penarth, Cardiff Bay Just across the border, Penarth Quays sits behind the impressive barrage, built 17 years ago to create Cardiff Bay - an area of open water ideal for events, recreation and wildlife.

ardiff Bay is now recognised as being one of the UK’s most successful regeneration programmes, creating a 500 acre freshwater lake, fed by the Rivers Taff and Ely, in the former dockland area. The barrage gives vessels 24 hour access, through three locks, opening this whole area up and bringing new life and prosperity to Tiger Bay. For those of us who like to stretch our legs after a long passage at sea the 13km walkway around the Bay is recommended with the Pont y Werin bascule bridge enabling cyclists and walkers to cross the Ely and complete the circuit that takes in Penarth, with its famous pier. It was a very popular resort in Victorian times with wide views over the Bristol Channel and beyond. The 340 berth Penarth Quays is run by Quay Marinas, with manager Stuart Jones keeping a cheerful hand on the tiller here. It is a sheltered haven for yachtsmen with the joys of Cardiff just over the bay. There are boat parking meters at Mermaid Quay, if you want to pop over for shopping and a spot of lunch.
TIME FOR LUNCH
Site facilities are good for a hungry girl who has just driven over the Severn Bridge, so I trot off happily to choose my lunch spot. Diverting temporarily for a peep at the hypnotic barrage, I check out The Custom House, an impressive building looking over the barrage and out to sea, but decide this is not for me this time. So I walk along the quayside, admiring the colourful gardens and bods tweaking their rigs ahead of the weekend. Pier 64 is an iconic wood clad building hanging over the marina. The superb deck area is glazed to keep off the wind and

strengthened to take a crowd of 300 plus. This is more like it. There is a cosmopolitan feel inside, a bit sparkly, cocktails being shaken, but friendly and offering all berth holders and visiting yachts a 10 per cent discount. I go for a quick lunch of chicken satay and it is spot on. The succulent chicken gently spiced on a bed of roast peppers, carrots and sliced beans, the scatter of peanut nibs on top adding the crunch. Washed down with lime and soda I am ready to continue my whistle stop tour of Penarth and hike up the steep hill into town.
SPOILT FOR CHOICE
Penarth is probably best known for its Pier. The planting is lovely here and the views wide and open over the Bristol Channel, north to Cardiff and across the Bristol Channel to Weston Super-Mare and beyond. Along the esplanade is the recently opened James Sommerin, a top rated restaurant with rooms above. Renowned for his fascinating tasting menus, this is a special place for dinner as prices start at £60 for six courses and matching wine for another £40. I am told the food is very good. It was quiet when I visited and, dare I say, a little sterile? When I asked the marina if they had tried it out Stuart said he went there for a special birthday party and the food was exceptional, with service to match. So heading back into town I spot Bar 44, owned by two brothers with three Spanish bars in their chain: one in Cardiff, another in Cowbridge and this one in Penarth, which is a favourite of the marina team. I like the look of the long polished bar, list of tapas, Spanish gin and tonic specials and a flight of sherries. It has a lovely atmosphere and the Iberica ham looks the business at the back of the bar. The little garden is bathed in afternoon sunshine.

I will return later, but there is still time to check out the best butcher, baker and fruit and veg stall in town, before heading back to the marina for afternoon tea at Compass Café, run by Marcus and Craig and open every day for some classic breakfasts, served until 4pm. They are very popular with berth holders, cyclists and walkers, as well as all the workers at Penarth Quays. They use local where they can, bread

ALL AT SEA SEPTEMBER 2016
ROYALIST VISIT FOR WHITEHAVEN MARINA THE newly commissioned TS Royalist visited Whitehaven Marina for the first time in August. This was the first visit of the new TS Royalist since she entered service in 2015. The previous Royalist was a regular visitor to Whitehaven and a favourite stop over because of the excellent rail and road links to all areas of the North of England. With over 400 Sea Cadet units and 50,000 cadets across the UK the TS Royalist plays a vital part in Sail Training to many of the young cadets. The crew of 26 Sea Cadets and eight full time staff took time to walk around the historic sea front town of Whitehaven - which was the third largest sea port in the UK in the 1650’s. www.whitehavenmarina.co.uk
MDL’S MERCURY AND NORTHNEY MARINAS GET FIVE GOLD ANCHORS
MERCURY Yacht Harbour in Southampton and Northney Marina in Hayling Island have both been awarded Five Gold Anchors by The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA). Both marinas received the award, which is similar to the star system used for hotels. Mercury Yacht Harbour achieved 92% overall, and Northney Marina was awarded 89%, both receiving a near-perfect nine points out of a possible ten for the marina’s mystery shop. Mercury Yacht Harbour was praised for its wellmaintained facilities and the benefits and social activities provided for berth holders, with the assessor concluding that the “marina is an active marina, with a range of social activities. Customers also benefit from MDL’s Freedom Berthing, super-fast Wi-FI and 24/7 marina support.” The team were also praised for their “helpfulness and friendliness and breadth of knowledge.” Northney Marina was commended for its wide range of boating services and facilities to a high standard, in a “very pleasant, clean, sheltered and great location and surroundings.” The assessor commented: “there is a strong emphasis on customer service and training, and the marina is very well staffed.” The scheme has been designed by The Yacht Harbour Association to help boat owners make an informed decision on where to berth. www.mdlmarinas.co.uk

YELLOWDRAMA IV ON FILM THE lovely Swan 57, Yellowdrama IV, arrived at Fox’s Marina and Boatyard in October 2015, the third time the yacht has visited Fox’s for refit work, following previous refits in 1994 and 2005. On this occasion she underwent a major refit during the seven months she was in the yard, which included removing and replacing her worn teak decks, repainting topsides and coachroof with Awlgrip, plus various re-rigging and engineering work. Fox’s commissioned professional, local film producer, drone pilot and cameraman, Tim Curtis of Video East, a production company based in Suffolk to record her transformation. Tim is in fact
more familiar with working with the likes of Robert Peston and John Simpson, filming breaking news, world events and feature stories, and has worked for many leading news networks including APTN, Al Jazeera and the BBC as well as covering many major sporting events such as the FIFA World Cups, UEFA Champions League, Wimbledon and the America’s Cup. So Fox’s were delighted to secure his services! Tim’s time-lapse film of Yellowdrama’s refit, which includes aerial footage around Fox’s Marina and the River Orwell, can be viewed on the Fox’s Marina and Boatyard website at www.foxsmarina. com/yellowdrama-iv-on-film

THE BRIGHT GREEN TRIKE ARRIVES AT HASLAR AND PORTLAND STAFF at Haslar and Portland Marinas are the first of the Dean and Reddyhoff venues to peddle out on the bright green trikes, randomly providing a smile and some kindness, this time in the form of ice-creams. Ben Lippiett, manager at Haslar, said: “Our new project is being very well received. I did the first ice-cream run and found people opening their purses and wallets, but what a great feeling to say no, these are on the house. The ice cream in the fabulous August weather has gone down well and put even bigger smiles on our berth holders faces.’ It is random though, so keep your eyes open, and listen for the bell.

much nearer an English Pale Ale. At 4.7 per cent, it is available in bottles or on draft in local bars. My tasting panel of normally English ale enthusiasts declared it a good alternative, refreshing and tangy on the tongue. Too small an operation to export, it is a must-try in Deauville, Honfleur or Le Havre and a must-buy to bring home in neat 33cl bottles at 45 euros per 24 bottle case.
The younger brews have a yellow-gold colour and are distinctly apple flavoured - the French use them for cooking. The best for drinking for a reasonable price are around five years old. Anything which says ‘Pays d’Auge’ will be very acceptable. It is best to buy in or around Deauville where there is plenty of choice. Over here, Père Magloire, 40 per cent, is well distributed and costs around £22.50 for a 50cl bottle. Or you can buy Château du Breuil, 70cl, from www.drinksupermarket.com for £23.69 to £73.19 depending on age. Calvados is a delightful after dinner sipper to accompany French cheese, chocolate desserts, ice cream or French crêpes with an ice cube or a small splash of water. Do not return from a Deauville voyage without at least one bottle, to cheer up the approaching winter.
CALVADOS COUNTRY La Paillette is well known throughout Normandy
O
nce the Southampton Boat Show finishes there is still plenty of time for an end-of-season cruise. There is Deauville, the stylish seaside resort on France’s Baie de la Seine coast. You will find striking belle-époque buildings, a grand casino incorporating four restaurants, two bars and a nightclub, classy wine stores and a long beach boardwalk once graced by many celebrities from an earlier elegant era. Our visit was early June, travelling by car and ferry via Le Havre. The marina was getting ready for yachts arriving for the first leg of the Solitaire Bompard Le Figaro race to Cowes. But the weather was wintery bleak and rainy so we abandoned the waterfront and went to the back of town to visit La Paillette boutique brewery. First brewed in 1596, La Paillette is well known throughout Normandy. It is brewed in the French Pilsner lager style, but the strong malty flavour is
This part of Normandy, the Pays d’Auge, is Calvados territory too, and just a few kilometres south of Deauville is the local Calvados distillery, Château du Breuil. Calvados distilling began in the 1500s and since 1942 it has had its own Appellation Contrôlée AOC ‘Pays d’Auge’ which requires apples produced only in the Pays d’Auge area and a double-distillation process in copper stills. At Château du Breuil the home-grown bitter apples are first made into a five per cent alcohol cider using natural fermentation. This is then double-distilled and matured for at least two years in pre-used oak barrels and bottled at 40 per cent. It takes about 11 kilos of apples or eight litres of the cider to make one litre of Chateau du Breuil. Each Calvados is different; each cellar master has his own jealously guarded secret. A two-year-old gets three stars on the label, a three-year-old is already called ‘vieux’ or Réserve, while VSOP or Vieille Réserve is at least four years old and Napoléan or Age Inconnu can be from six to 25 years old, by which time it is dark brown and over £100 a bottle.
