British Marine has issued the latest Boating and Boat Ownership survey, which focuses on a number of key areas including watersports participation trends, attitudes to and resources used for training and boat purchasing and ownership trends. The report, covering 2020 - 2021, also investigates the impact of Covid-19 and found that it had a profound effect on the UK’s relationship with the outdoors with visits to ‘blue spaces’ (canals, rivers, lakes and the coast) increasing in popularity, from 18 per cent pre-pandemic to 49 per cent in 2021. We know watersports have seen a rise in popularity and this was supported with nearly a quarter of participants who took part in 2020 doing so for the first time. This trend was particularly pronounced in ‘gateway’ boating activities like paddleboarding and kayaking. The influx of new boaters also had a knock-on effect on boat sales, with sales estimated to have increased by 9 per cent in 2020 and then a further 2 per cent in 2021, with first-time buyers favouring paddleboards, canoes or kayaks and narrowboats. This trend continued in 2021, with an increase in the share of first-time owners across almost every type of boat and watersports craft. With a positive outlook for the industry, almost a quarter of respondents indicated that they were likely to purchase a new boat or watersports craft within the next 12 months, with most interested in sailing yachts (32 per cent), motor cruisers (25 per cent) or trailerable powerboats (19 per Accordingcent). to respondents, attending industry exhibitions like Southampton International Boat Show has the greatest influence on their purchasingInterestingly, decision.British brands dominated the style of boats that consumers were interested in purchasing, especially in the UK’s traditional boatbuilding niches, such as dinghy sailboats. In the sailing yacht and speedboat markets, however, demand is dominated by European and American brands. Lesley Robinson, CEO British Marine, said: “The results of the survey go to show there is a real appetite for people to get on the water in the UK. As an industry our job now is to look at ways we can continue to encourage people to take to the water in the UK and build on the momentum of the previous two years.”

World Yacht Race 39 per cent were female. Around the same time as the Clipper yachts were finishing their final leg, Hannah Mills and Sir Ben Ainslie were announcing the Athena Pathway Programme. As well as youth sailors, this initiative is for female sailors and aims to level the playing field in high-performance foiling sailing and bring diversity into the professional sport. It will be interesting to see the percentage of female sailors in the next Clipper race… However, before that there are still lots of events to come this month and beyond. In this issue’s news pages we have an America’s Cup update, news about February’s Boatlife plus, this month, the Golden Globe Race kicked off, there is a Classic Boat Festival at St. Katharine Docks and, of course, it is the Southampton International Boat Show. British Marine has show news on page 24, and then on page 25 you will find the start of All at Sea’s 10 page Southampton International Boat Show preview. From boat launches and show zones to new kit and amazing demonstrations, we have got it covered leaving you to enjoy a fabulous day (or days) out. Don’t forget to enter this month’s competition to win a brilliant Mustang Ocean Racing Jacket! Enjoy the paper.

This month the eyes of the boating world are firmly set on Southampton with the arrival of the fantastic Southampton International Boat Show, which kicks off on 16 ButSeptember.firstweare heading west to Plymouth and then across the Irish Sea to Cork, Ireland. There has been a great deal of talk about the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park, and so we decided to dig a little deeper to find out more about the UK’s first – but hopefully not last – Park in the Sea. With our (land) national parks bringing in billions to the economy every year, surely there are huge potential benefits, and not just economically, to making more use of the wonderful coastal asset this country has. Read more about PSNMP on page 44, and let us know what you think about introducing similar parks around the UK. If you are thinking of a slightly longer cruise than normal this autumn then David Henshall suggests Cork could be the ideal destination. Not only does it enjoy the claim of hosting the world’s oldest yacht club but there is wonderful cruising to be had here too. Whether you choose Cork, Plymouth or your usual local cruising ground, there is no doubt that you will be enjoying ‘blue space’ benefits. This is not a new concept, but interestingly it is also the sounds of water that can have a major positive impact on our health and well-being. So, next time you are on board your boat be sure to take in, say, the sound of the sails, the wind or wildlife. There is a fascinating article about the added benefits of blue spaces over green spaces on page 40. Not that we need an excuse to get afloat… Perhaps you have heard people talking about the what3words app and wondered what on earth it is and why you might need it. Well, after providing her what3words location to the emergency services, a paddleboarder who got into difficulty was rescued by Mundesley Lifeboat. Turn to page 16 to find out how you can use the app in an emergency too. It has been a wonderfully busy summer, which is reflected in this month’s news page where we have been looking back at some of the events which have taken place including the Solent’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, Great Britain SailGP, Uffa Fox celebrations and the Clipper Race finish in London. It was fantastic to learn that of those who signed up to complete all eight legs of the Clipper Round the | www.allatsea.co.uk |

The late Robert Furniss Riding, classic car collector and yachtsman, has left 16 cars to benefit the RNLI and other charities. Including a selection of Rolls-Royce and Bentley models, the cars are being offered for sale without reserve by H&H Classics at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford on 19 PaulOctober.Cheetham who consigned the collection for H&H Classics, said: “This fabulous selection is evidence of Bob Riding’s wide-ranging taste in classic cars with a bias towards Rolls-Royce and Bentley, spanning nine decades of the 20th century. They are a marvellous cross section of some of the best of the last century’s most sought after cars. And their sale will benefit one of Britain’s most beloved institutions, the RNLI.” Robert’s cars were regularly campaigned at rallies for the appropriate marque and were often winners of various trophies.

The droughts across Europe this summer have led to some incredible revelations. The Danube, flowing through much of Central and Southeastern Europe, is at one of its lowest levels in almost a century, and as a result the wrecks of more than 20 explosives-laden German warships sunk during World War Two near Serbia’s port town of Prahovo have been exposed. By Prahovo the navigable section is down to just 100m from 180m. It is thought the cost for the salvage of the craft and removal of ammunition and explosives would be around $30 million.

Scott said: “I know that taking on the Vendée Globe will be the biggest challenge of my life. I have joined forces with one of the best in the business, Alex Thomson, and like him, I have always been competitive and driven. With the launch of Canada Ocean Racing, we have three clear objectives: to become the first Canadian to complete the Vendée Globe, to develop the sport of offshore sailing within Canada and to build a successful business in the sport. We are a proud and adventurous nation and it is time for Canada to compete on the world stage in singlehanded offshore sailing.” Alex said: “When I met Scott, I knew that together we could continue my goal of taking this incredible sport to a wider international audience. The Vendée Globe and solo offshore sailing has been such an important part of my life and is so much more than a sport. It inspires and engages so many people, and I think to bring the sport to a relatively new market like Canada will help to continue the growth and internationalisation of the sport. Scott has all the raw ingredients required to sail solo around the world, and together with his business experience, drive and commitment, we are going to create a long term and meaningful campaign, and hopefully have some fun on the way.”

You might recall the story, earlier in the year, in which it was reported that an historic bridge in Rotterdam would potentially be temporarily dismantled to allow a superyacht built for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to pass through. Not surprisingly the plan was not universally well received. Now, though, the boat has been seen in the middle of the night making speedy progress on an alternative route.

WINNING READERS

Scott and the Canada Ocean Racing team have begun training as they prepare to compete in the IMOCA Globe Series, a series of offshore races including solo and double handed transatlantic crossings, leading to the Vendée Globe in 2028.

OCEAN CLEANUP UNDERWAY

Pip said: “It is not often I go into a race wanting to take line honours, but that really was a goal, so we are very happy. I am really stoked to get line honours in a race around Britain and Ireland. “In the Vendée Globe it is a big deal to race around Cape Horn, but the Shetland Islands is way further north than Cape Horn is south. I am very, very proud to have my name against line honours in this edition of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. I have full admiration for everyone out there; this is a tough race for all of us, but the first cold beer when you cross the line makes it all worthwhile!”

The Ocean Cleanup has now officially removed more than 100,000kg of plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Since deployment in August 2021, System 002 has collected 101,353kg of plastic over 45 extractions, sweeping an area of the ocean covering more than 3,000km2 – comparable to the size of Luxembourg. Added to the 7,173kg of plastic captured by their previous prototype systems, The Ocean Cleanup has now collected 108,526kg of plastic from the GPGP –more than the combined weight of two-and-a-half BoeingAccording737-800s.totheir 2018 study, in which they mapped the patch, the total amount of accumulated plastic is 79,000,000kg, or 100,000,000kg including the Outer GPGP. Pip Hare was awarded the Cowes Week Women’s Day Trophy, which recognises the outstanding contribution, commitment and achievements of women in sailing. Pip rose to fame in the 2020/21 Vendee Globe. Having started as an underdog in one of the oldest boats in the fleet, she out-performed many newer boats. At the same time, her excellent reports from the race course endeared her to a rapidly growing fan base in the UK and around the world. The Women’s Day Trophy was introduced in 2006 to champion the role of women in sailing and the sheer number of female competitors racing at Cowes Week, where more than one-third of competitors were female. Congratulations to Pip Hare who, with Paul Larsen, Nick Bubb, Kevin George and Ben Schwartz, took line honours on board Medallia in the Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race in an elapsed time of 10 days 13 hours 23 minutes and 22 seconds. High pressure dominated the early part of the race, so the Medallia team took over seven days to reach Muckle Flugga. On 4 September the third edition of the Golden Globe Race started from Les Sables d’Olonne, France. The sailors face eight months of isolation sailing 30,000 miles across five oceans, solo non-stop and unassisted. In 1968, while man was preparing to take his first steps on the moon, a mild mannered and modest young man was setting out on his own record breaking voyage of discovery. He had entered the original Golden Globe Race.Nine men started that first solo non-stop sailing race around the world. Only one finished. He was 29-year-old Sir Robin Knox Johnston. Navigating only with a sextant, paper charts and an accurate and reliable timepiece, Sir Robin navigated around the world. In 2018, to celebrate 50 years since that first record breaking achievement, the Golden Globe Race was resurrected. 18 started and five finished. The original race was back. Once again they used only sextants, paper charts, wind up clocks and cassette tapes forTheremusic.were 17 sailors due to start the latest edition, but Aleix Selles was still testing his jury rig test and so was hoping to leave a week after the rest of the fleet. For the start, thousands lined the wall along the mythical channel of Sables d'Olonne where classic and historic yachts, competitors of the Golden Globe Race, traditional Olonnois yachts and local yachts paraded towards the startline. It was Britain's Simon Curwen who crossed the line first, followed shortly by France's Damien Guillou on PRB, later joined by Kirsten Neuschäfer.

The Great Britain Sail Grand Prix was ultimately won by the New Zealand SailGP Team who performed consistently well throughout the weekend. The Great Britain Sail Grand Prix was followed, just a few weeks later, by the ROCKWOOL Denmark Sail Grand Prix. However, having arrived in Denmark in second place overall, the Great Britain SailGP Team suffered a major setback when, during practice in Copenhagen, they sustained damage to their F50 race boat after hitting an uncharted rock just outside the racecourseDamageboundary.includedsnapping the head of the starboard rudder clean off and damage to the starboard daggerboard and board casing. Unfortunately the foil board casing was beyond an onsite repair and the team had no choice but to retire. Ben Ainslie said: “We reviewed the damage ashore and unfortunately it has put us out of this event, which is a difficult call for the team. Incidents like this are tough but that is sport, you are going to have these moments and the teams that keep their heads up are the ones that come back stronger and that is what we are going to do. We appreciate all the support from the SailGP Tech Team to retrieve the boat and help repair the damage ready for racing in Saint-Tropez.” Also whilst training ahead of the start, the Spanish team’s rudder was damaged in an underwater collision, but they were able to make the necessary repairs in time to race. However, they were only able to take eighth place with New Zealand taking another win, putting them just four points behind Australia in the championship standings. The British team will race in the France Sail Grand Prix Saint-Tropez over 11 - 12 September having slipper from second place ahead of the Denmark SailGP to fifth.

Swiss America's Cup challenger Alinghi Red Bull Racing has launched BoatZero – a training AC75 bought in New Zealand – becoming the first team to take up residence in Barcelona, home of the 37th America’s Cup. It comes just four months after Barcelona was announced as the venue for the next regatta, which is due to take place in September and October 2024. The re-christened Alinghi Red Bull Racing emerged from its temporary base shed with a fresh new livery and looking ready for high octane action. Head coach Nils Frei said: “This first-generation boat will allow us to gain valuable training hours before we have our race boat. We are a new team sailing a boat that we are only just discovering, but to America’s Cup base allocation is coming together with the confirmed sites now selected in strict order of entry, as set out in the Protocol. Emirates Team New Zealand, as holder of the America’s Cup picked their base area first and selected the World Trade Centre site at the western end of the official America’s Cup race village. Speaking about the selection, Kevin Shoebridge, COO of ETNZ, said: “It is very nice to have first option but to be perfectly honest any of the base sites would have worked perfectly for us. The Port Authority has been first-class in helping us get to this point in such a tight timescale and their commitment to the America’s Cup is unparalleled.”

Grant Dalton, CEO of ETNZ, has been equally impressed with how the process has been conducted: “I cannot speak highly enough of the work and commitment that has gone into getting us to this point with the Port de Barcelona. All of the bases are located in the Barcelona Port Vell area along with the dedicated America’s Cup race village, hospitality and fan zone areas which will create an amazing atmosphere in the lead up to and during the event in 2024.”According to the Protocol for the 37th America’s Cup, the allocation of bases is Defender first, then Challenger of Record, followed by the remaining Challengers in the order that their challenges were accepted.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and American Magic have opted for bases further around the port on its southern flank where viewing galleries and hospitality facilities are planned to watch the racing just yards off the beachfront. The Italians will be housed to the western end of the port entrance just down from the Barcelona Nautic Center that is being used as the temporary base for Alinghi Red Bull Racing, in an area that is currently disused and something of a blank canvas.

America’s Cup veteran Sir Michael Fay has quit his 46 year membership of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in protest at the America’s Cup defence being moved to Barcelona. A $99 million bid from the New Zealand Government and Auckland Council to host the 37th edition of the America’s Cup was rejected before Barcelona was chosen as host. Michael Fay, along with fellow Cup luminaries Alan Sefton and Andrew Johns, wrote an open letter to Commodore Aaron Young describing the club’s “regretful approach to its obligations as Trustee of the America’s Cup”. The letter highlighted the Deed of Gift passage: “It is distinctly understood that the Cup is to be the property of the Club subject to the provisions of this deed, and not the property of the owner or owners of any vessel winning a match.” The Barcelona regional government’s initial estimates suggested holding the America’s Cup in the Mediterranean city would have an economic impact of around $900 million to $1 billion based on the previous event in Auckland. be able to train already this year is highly beneficial. If there is one thing that all Cup campaigns have in common, it is that you can never make up for lost time. And you never have enough of it.”

Having purchased the boat early in the cycle from Emirates Team New Zealand, the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team has been working flat-out to prepare the AC75 for its first sail. And adding experience to the Swiss team are two legends of the America’s Cup in the form of Dean Barker from New Zealand, part of the winning New Zealand team in 2000 and recently helmsman of American Magic in 2021, plus Pietro Sibello, a finalist with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the 2021TimMatch.Hacket, shore manager for Alinghi Red Bull Racing, said: “We had to find our feet in a new city with new colleagues and buying a boat that we had not worked on previously required a lot of hours to get used to. All these hours are learning experiences that will be useful towardsSkipperBoatZero.”ofAlinghi Red Bull Racing, Arnaud Psarofaghis, will be helming the boat throughout the permissible training period and crew will be rotated in and out as the schedule progresses. Analysis of performance in all areas will be key and the eyes of the Cup world will be watching intently to see how this new team develops. “BoatZero will allow us to gain the necessary experience on the AC75. Despite the satisfaction of today’s festivities, we are aware that there is still a lot of work to do to catch up with the level of the teams that raced the 36th America’s Cup. But today has given us the energy to focus on the next step: sailing,” said Silvio Arrivabene, co-general manager and head of technical operations. The entry period ran until 31 July 2022, although late entries for the 37th America’s Cup may be accepted until 31 May 2023. Red Bull

So, following support from The National Lottery, the boat was salvaged and now plays a key role in helping people with addiction problems in their recovery process. Sadly, they were not able to restore the boat to its former glory. Instead, they decided to build a new recovery centre for skills-building, health and wellbeing, and put the boat on display there ‘in all her broken beauty’. Crucially, Claire said, the boat’s past told a story about the “recovery of people”, a component the project was keen to retain. She said: “We have got this little banner, Recovery Through Recovery, which is really important for us. It is about using the boat, and her story of heroism and recovery of people’s lives from the beaches of Dunkirk, and inspiring people who are suffering from addictions today in their recovery journey.” Claire said: “We will show her wounds, and show this is a boat that has lived. And that is so important, because it is about saying you do not need to bePodcastperfect.”host Amber Rose-Gill said: “The Skylark IX is a symbol of recovery and resilience, inspiring people to make positive changes in their lives. She has helped people make authentic connections, realise their potential and give them opportunities for a better tomorrow.”

Lesley Robinson, CEO British Marine, added: “We are delighted to once again be able to offer an exclusive ticket offer to members of the RYA. We have a fantastic line-up of boats, exhibitors, talks and attractions; we are sure the RYA’s members will thoroughly enjoy it and we look forward to welcoming them to the show.”

for the first few years of its life, the boatplayed a role in many people’s visits to the seaside, but it was not until the Second World War broke out that it truly made its mark on history. In Operation Dynamo, the boat rescued more than 600 allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk, helping larger vessels that could not venture into shallow waters. After its role in the rescue mission, Skylark IX was used as a pleasure boat once again until 2010 when it became unsafe. It sank shortlyClaireafter.McDade, project manager of the Skylark Recovery Trust, said this triggered an ‘SOS’ among local boat clubs and veterans, who began a campaign to save the historic vessel. She said: “The trust raised all this money, over £400,000, from The National Lottery, to whom we are eternally grateful, to help us rebuild the boat and then refloat her.”

The UK Hydrographic Office has announced its intention to withdraw from global paper chart production by late 2026 to increase focus on its digital navigation products and services. UKHO withdrew its Small Craft Folios in late 2021, while offering the option to use ‘print-on-demand’ facilities. By 2026 it plans to cease production of all paper charts including standard Admiralty nautical charts and thematic charts, and print on demand will also end. Other paper publications will continue. For leisure users, UKHO plans digital charts which, with the encouragement of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, will drop the ‘not to be used for navigation’ disclaimer. These charts will be kept up-todate over the internet in near real time. The proposal is supported by the MCA on the grounds of safety at sea. Much detail remains to be disclosed. The Cruising Association’s RATS group is cautiously supportive of UKHO’s entry into the digital leisure market and, particularly, the dropping of the ‘not to be used’ disclaimer. However, the cessation of UKHO paper charts has wide and far-reaching implications for many cruisers. Navigators may prefer to have access to paper charts. Training issues need to be considered too. The RYA has already indicated that it will continue to teach both traditional and electronic navigational techniques through its range of courses. For cruising sailors, a number of factors will be critical to success: delivery, hardware compatibility, commercial availability, pricing and the sequencing and timing of changes. Through RATS, the CA will be involved in discussions with UKHO and the MCA and will report as matters progress. Paper charts will continue to be available from Imray*. Lucy Wilson, Imray’s managing director, told the CA: “Imray have no plans to withdraw paper charts. Our focus is the leisure and small craft sector. There is still strong demand from leisure customers and we remain the only private chart publisher to be recognised by the MCA for our chart range. We have been expanding our range of chart packs in response to the UKHO’s earlier decision to withdraw those. Our plan is to continue to develop our offering both paper and digital.”

Just about 100 years ago, much of what we see today as the sport of dinghy racing was starting out along the line of development, with an incredible individual firmly at the helm. Not only did Isle of Wight ‘born and bred’ sailor Uffa Fox build boats, but he also led the early days of improving dinghy design and then stood out as a very clever publicist. His exploits as a young man and his ability to win races on the Solent and elsewhere were more than matched by all his other activities, for Fox was first and foremost a huge personality whose life story alone could fill this paper. Now, 50 years after Fox’s death, the yacht clubs at Cowes came together with a host of other organisations to create a weekend dedicated to celebrating the memory of this incredible individual. A fleet of dinghies designed by Uffa were on display, parked in the Parade at Cowes, which would also be the starting point for an informative trail that would take visitors on a Fox themed walk around the town. Although the Cowes Classic Boat Museum was one of the centre points, it was great to see the dinghies, many of which had long qualified for bus pass status, launching into the Medina River to take part in a series of races where the level of competition belied the age of so many of the Thankfully, boats. the weather played its part, with the first day of racing notable for strong sunshine, stronger tides but not a lot of breeze early on. After one race was lost to the conditions a pleasant sea breeze arrived to help the boats around the course with the spectators being gifted the sight of the beautifully varnished hulls, with the Cowes shoreline as a backdrop. It was not just the old dinghies that were the stars, as Fox’s designs crossed many boundaries; there was a bumper fleet of his Flying Fifteen racing keelboats arriving ahead of their European Championships, whilst the Fairey Atalanta 26ft cruisers also came to Cowes from locations around our coasts to help with the celebrations for their designer. The second day of competition would be very different, with breeze from the outset and plenty more forecast for later in the day. The Race Team worked hard to get the racing completed, so that the boats could return to shore before things got too brisk for many of the older craft, but before they finished this really did give these amazing boats an opportunity to show that Fox magic to its best, out on the racecourse. The organisers, supporters, Cowes itself and the many sponsors all worked hard together to create a wonderful weekend of activities both ashore and afloat, and in doing so can be congratulated for ‘doing Fox proud’. The real stars, though, were the boats themselves, for as they raced on what was Fox’s home waters, they provided the perfect testament to his enduring legacy. The Solent’s boating community came together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at Cowes last month, attended by HRH The Princess Royal. The spectacular showcase of more than 400 boats in The Solent gave a big welcome to the Princess and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, in recognition of the support the Royal Family has given to the Solent’s sailing community over the last 70 years. The event featured a motorpast review of all the boats by the Princess, who led the way in the first of five Wetwheels’ powerboats carrying VIP guests. The Princess is Patron of the Wetwheels charity, which provides barrier-free boating opportunities to disabled people. The Princess then performed a Fleet Review from the deck of the Royal Navy’s HMS SEVERN Offshore Patrol Vessel. Among the fleet was an impressive line-up of historic ships, including four Dunkirk Little Ships - Tahilla, Papillon, Maimonide and Naiad Errant and two historic yachts – Sir Francis Chichester’s Gipsy Moth IV and Suhaili – with owner Sir Robin Knox-Johnston on board. In addition, there were two sail training vessels - Scaramouche and Challenger 72 - and Bluebottle, a wedding gift to HM The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh from the Island Sailing Club. This review was accompanied by an air display by a ‘City of Exeter’ Spitfire, courtesy of the Spitfire Academy at Goodwood. Music and entertainment followed at a free concert held at Cowes Yacht Haven. Chair of the organising committee, Jonathan NainbyLuxmoore, said: “The Solent was ablaze with bunting and flags and the weather was perfect. We could not have asked for a better day for our tribute to HM The Queen for her Platinum Jubilee. Thank you to everyone who took part, ashore and afloat, and the army of people who made it all happen. A true coming together of all the clubs and classes whose sailing home is the Solent.” Hampshire yachtsman Geoff Holt MBE, founder of the Wetwheels charity and a member of the organising committee, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the Solent Platinum Jubilee Celebration was such a success. Every boat we passed greeted us with three cheers and enthusiastic waving. It was a once in a lifetime moment and sailors across the region did The Solent proud. “At one point, there was a line of boats, three abreast, stretching from Cowes back to Osborne Bay; it was a fantastic spectacle and I was thrilled that Wetwheels was at the heart of the day. Your thoughts This topic was discussed in some detail in the July’s Cruising Association column, but there is still some confusion regarding UK boats entering and leaving French ports in what is a changing situation. An All at Sea reader, Alan Carrick, got in touch to let us know he had spoken to someone in Ramsgate Harbour who had been refused entry at Boulogne and had been told to go to Calais to have his passport stamped. They included Ineke van der Weijden and Angela Brandsma from The Netherlands, and Maisie Bristow, Hannah Brewis and Mary Vaughan-Jones from the UK. Hannah Brewis, who raced on board theSeattleteam, had a message for women who might like to get into sailing: “There is not just one skill you need in sailing - not just strength, or just intelligence – there are so many things that make a good sailor. It is about using your own strengths.” Over the past 11 editions of the Clipper Race, thousands of women from all over the world have been introduced to sailing and trained to be ocean racers. Applications for the 2023-24 race are open now via the Clipper Race www.clipperroundtheworld.comwebsite.

athletes into high-performance foiling sailing, including both SailGP and the America’s Cup. The team has recently purchased a 26ft ‘Easy to Fly’ foiling catamaran with the training base primarily based out of the 2012 Olympic Venue, WPNSA, Weymouth. Initial recruits to the team include Hattie Rogers, the SailGP Inspire x WASZP champion, and Sophie Heritage, who joins the team on the shoreside. Beyond the sport the Athena Pathway will aim to equip individuals with life skills for success whichever direction their career may take. To date, the opportunity gap in professional sailing has not solely been on the water. Over the past years competing in America’s Cup and SailGP, it has been clear to Ben Ainslie, who will be advising the Athena Pathway, that there is a significant amount of work to be done on the shore side too.

The multinational crew came from all walks of life - this edition saw women teachers race alongside chiropractors, students and interior designers. Amongst those breaking records during the race was Elena Lee, who became the first Korean woman to race across the North Atlantic Ocean when she took part in Leg 8 on board Imagine your Korea. Elena had no previous sailing experience before signing up.

Ben said:“When we first launched our charity, the 1851 Trust, in 2014 one of our key ambitions was to bring more diversity into the marine industry. We are still doing that at the grassroots level in schools across the UK, but now, through the Athena Pathway, we hope to be able to offer significant experience and opportunities, at the highest level of our sport, to further achieve that ambition.” Applications are open to be a part of the programme, with opportunities on and off the water.

The immediate objective of the Athena Pathway Programme will be to fast-track development of female

A summer of success for women in sport continued when 65 non-professional female sailors returned to London after the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. After racing more than 40,000nm around the world, the Clipper Race fleet of 11 identical 70ft racing yachts, carrying more than 150 race crew sailing on the final leg of the Clipper Race, arrived back in London, completing the epic circumnavigation and enjoying a huge celebration event at London’s RoyalTheDocks.Clipper 2019-20 Race Winner was Qingdao. Skippered by Chris Brooks, they had been the team to beat from early on in the circumnavigation. Qingdao was also on the podium eight times, scooping a top three position in over half of the 14 races.

The Clipper Race’s global route is divided into eight legs and people from all walks of life can choose to sign up for any combination of legs. Of those who signed up to complete all eight legs, racing all the way around the world, 39 per cent were female, with ages ranging from 19 - 75.

Hannah said: “Sailing has made great strides forward in gender equality in recent decades, led by the Olympic side of the sport where gender equality has now been reached on the water, but the professional side, particularly in high-performance foiling sailing, is far behind where it needs to be. High-performance sailing has no major barriers to physical entry and through the Athena Pathway we will create a gender equal pathway for all, with sustainability at its heart. “I am incredibly excited to be teaming up with Ben to change the landscape of professional sailing in the UK. Young girls are already coming up to me excited by the potential opportunities within the America’s Cup, SailGP and beyond, which is amazing to see. Equally, however, the knock-on effect this could have in terms of growth within our sport as more females see career opportunities within the marine industry could be huge.”

HANNAH AND BEN'S PATHWAY

Image: Clipper Race ROUND LUNDY YACHT RACE

Hannah Mills OBE and Sir Ben Ainslie, the most successful female and male Olympic sailors of all time, have announced the Athena Pathway Programme, a new pathway for female and youth sailors which aims to level the playing field in high-performance foiling sailing and bring diversity into the professional sport, with sustainability at its core.

This summer saw Ilfracombe Yacht Club holding the 16th annual Round Lundy Yacht Race. Since the inaugural race in 2005 this has become one of the classic sailing events in the Bristol Channel with the winner receiving the Trafalgar Cup in recognition of a little-known connection between Ilfracombe and the sea battle off Cape Trafalgar. When HMS Pickle sailed into Falmouth with the terrible news of Nelson’s death, it was an Ilfracombe lad, Lt Lapenotire, the Captain of the HMS Pickle, who conveyed the news onwards by road to the Admiralty in London. The Round Lundy Race is not for the faint hearted. If all goes well it is a race of between eight and 12 hours. Starting on the morning ebb tide outside Ilfracombe Harbour, a good race is dependent on catching the tidal gate at Lundy. Miss it, and your race is effectively over. Catch it right, and the steep rugged cliffs of the granite island can be circumnavigated before you begin the homeward run back to Ilfracombe to capitalise on the evening floodSkipperstide. and crews need to be prepared to face a variety of challenging conditions on this open water event with a sailing distance in excess of 55 miles. The 25 yachts taking part were faced with very light winds and calm seas, making for a slow and difficult start. Once underway, an exciting race was enjoyed by all, with the first boat back across the line being HAVOC in a time of 08:52:40. However, five boats failed to make the 20:00hrs cut off time. You can find the full results in the news pages at www.allatsea.co.uk.

Congratulating the winning team on their result, Clipper Race founder Sir Robin-Knox Johnston said: “Qingdao has won through a consistently good performance from the start. The yacht has always been leading or close to the lead on every leg of the race since the start in 2019. It is an excellent performance and one for which the Skipper, First Mate and crew can be justifiably proud.”

BRP is packaging its new Rotax outboard engine, with Stealth technology, to a range of fully redesigned boats - namely the Manitou, Alumacraft and Quintrex ranges. The engines are partially submerged and are said to be efficient, smooth and quiet at any speed. The new engine is available in 115 and 150hp configurations.

Suzuki Motor Corporation has started the rollout of its innovative micro-plastic collecting device as a standard part in four of its mid-range outboard motors. By installing this device to outboard motors, micro-plastics near the water surface can be collected simply by running the engine. The DF115B, DF115BG, DF140B and DF140BG will all now feature the micro-plastic collecting device. Mark Beeley, head of marine and ATV for Suzuki GB said, “The roll-out of the new micro-plastic collecting device is another great step forward for Suzuki. We have been talking to boaters about this unique innovation at shows and events since it was announced as a concept and it has been incredibly well received. We cannot wait to see the first outboards with it fitted as standard to be sold to customers in the UK.”

In July 2022, Vision Marine Technologies entered into a partnership with Groupe Beneteau, which will integrate the Disruptive E-Motion™ onto various models across the brand’s portfolio.

Vision Marine has smashed the World Record for the world’s fastest electric boat, achieving a top speed of 109mph at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout competition in the US.

Yamaha Marine UK is making it easier for customers to purchase its portable and electric drive outboards with a new ‘Click & Collect’ service. The ecommerce option enables customers to purchase their outboard from the comfort of their own home via the Yamaha UK website. Within a week the outboard will then be ready for collection from a chosen dealer. “We want to make buying an outboard as convenient and flexible as possible, as well as offering people more choice as to how they buy,” said Jonny Twelvetrees, manager of marine sales at Yamaha.

Vision Marine, in partnership with Hellkat Powerboats, produced the V32, a 32ft catamaran hull designed to hold the necessary battery banks to power a pair of Vision Marine’s flagship E-Motion™ electric outboards, with the sole intention of breaking new ground.

“Our portable and electric drive engines are ideal for online purchase. They are lightweight, compact and it is easy for someone to work out which engine is appropriate for their boat or tender.” “We have refreshed our stocks centrally of all our portable and electric drive models to support the launch of our new ‘Click & Collect’ service. Our approved outboard engine Yamaha dealers also have stock should a customer prefer to visit and buy directly – it is all about offering as much choice as we can, ensuring our customers have the best experience www.yamaha-motor.eu/gb/enpossible.”

The installation of this device is one of the three activities that form the ‘Suzuki Clean Ocean Project’, which is Suzuki’s commitment to addressing the marine plastics issue. Clean-Up the World Campaign: This is a volunteer waterside clean-up campaign run by Suzuki Group employees and partners and has been in operation since 2011. Reduce plastic packaging: Suzuki aims to reduce the plastic packaging for outboard motors and genuine parts. Since October 2020, Suzuki has avoided using more than 11 tons in plastic packaging and the aim is to further reduce plastics by increasing the number of applicable products and genuine parts. Collect marine-plastic waste: Suzuki aims to facilitate the further improvement of the marine environment and the realisation of a sustainable society by continuing the roll-out of the microplastic collecting device and promoting the Suzuki Clean Ocean Project. marine.suzuki.co.uk

They will swim 1.25km in the iconic Southampton docks, past tall ships and superyachts. Chloe Atkins, head of fundraising at the charity, said: “Participation in outdoor swimming in the UK is reported to have increased by between 1.5 and three times since 2019, so we felt now was the time to launch this event. So many people describe being in open water as a liberating experience and we liken this to the freedom hydrotherapy gives to the children and young people we support at Rose Road. The event will raise vital funds for activities such as hydrotherapy, overnight respite care and school holiday clubs for disabled people.” Swimmers will gain entry to the show before it opens to the public and will be able to enjoy all it offers after their swim too.

5. The difference between ‘stock’ and ‘order’ Most shipyards will have a waiting list of buyers who have committed to boats for delivery in 2023/24. In amongst those slots, dealers will often have a number of ‘pre-secured” slots available, which they will be looking to fill during the show. A dealer may have a boat that matches your spec ‘in stock’. Finding the perfect boat in stock is certainly more likely as boatsizes get smaller, so ask the dealer what he has in stock, and what slots he has available for delivery next season. Specifications may vary considerably, but there will be price differences either way which may well help lead you towards the right decision.

Top tips for buying a boat

This four-step boat ownership cost calculator allows you to examine the annual running costs of any boat you are considering purchasing.

8. Be prepared to buy If you there with the intention of making a purchase decision at the show, tell them. The dealers are there to sell, so they will be much more willing to get you the answers you need if they think there will be a deal at the end of it.

3. Plan your day Plan your day and make sure that you know the stand numbers of theboats you want to see, and when you want to see them. Pre-booking some appointments may help keep you on schedule. Perhaps book a hotel in Southampton and take two days at the show – it is very common.

See the luxurious bluewater Oyster 595 on the waterat Southampton. This British luxury 60ft bluewater sailing yacht has become one of the most popular in theOyster range with its unique design, new technology and build features distilled from Oyster’s larger yachts. Such is its popularity and worldwide appeal, that 16 yachts were sold off plan before the Oyster 595 was officially launched. The recently launched Oyster 595 will be on berth M371.

11. Enjoythe process Buying a boat does not happen every day for most. It can be a big decision, so enjoy the process. The show has lots of bars and restaurants where you cansit back and chat through your thoughts with your loved ones, often with a rather nice view in front of you.

6. Know who you are talking to Most dealers who work on a boat show stand have specific regions of the UK/ Med that they are responsible for. Some stands will have many dealers ‘on hand’ frommultiple locations. Do not just chat to the first person on the stand who is available; take some time to find the right contact as you may need them later in your ownership for all sorts of things.

Yamaha In the show’s marina on berth M038, Yamaha will present the Premium version of its flagship Yamarin 88 Day Cruiser. With the option to be specified with the Yamaha XTO 425hp, the Yamarin Premium 88 DC has a maximum speed of 45 knots and comes with a comprehensive equipment package as standard. Joining the 88 DC are the Yamarin 67 DC and 63 DC on berths M039 and M040 respectively. Making its UK and show debut on berth M041 is the new Buster Magnum Cabin. Powered by either a hydraulically controlled Yamaha 225hp or 300hp outboard or the latest Yamaha 300hp V6 outboard this is a 7.5m aluminium boat. In addition to all these products, Yamaha will have its JetBlaster® and FX Cruiser WaveRunner models, as well as a selection of YAM inflatable boats.

7. Negotiate sensibly Do not turn up on the first day and make silly offers. Equally, do not turn up on the last day and expect to get a bargain – there might not be a lot left to choose from. So, you could visit twice – once early in the week and then again, a couple of days later to ‘close’ the deal.

10. Sea trial it There are few shows in the world where you can test a yacht during the event. If you feel that you need to ‘try beforeyou buy’, discuss that with the dealer. Many of them will have Open House Weekends in the days/weeks right after the show for exactly that purpose. Others may have similarmodels nearby that you can sea trial during the show, if you do not mind a short car journey.

2. Watch the videos Video walk-throughs and boat tests are everywhere these days. Grab a coffee, open YouTube and learn as much as you can.

igh e d oats A new RIB from aluminium RIB supplier Highfield Boats will be on display. The Highfield Sport 760 is designed to be the perfect family all-rounder for days out on the water. 9. Allow yourself to be distracted You will find offers, and discounts, and things you had not thought of. Some of them might well work for you and be better in the long run than the thing you thought you were going there for.

4. Make yourself known beforehand If you tell a boat dealer when you are planning to attend, there are a number of things they can do to make your day a bit easier including private viewings and introductions to other services you are going to need. They will also be able to do some research on the potentialvalue of your part-exchange, if you have one.

ithout a doubt, a boat show represents a unique opportunity to see, touch and feel a huge number of boats in their natural environment. Make sure you use the show to its best advantageby following these helpful tips: 1. Time spent reconnaissancein is rarely time wasted Spend some time researching which boats will be at the event, which ones will be there for the first time and what similarboats will be on display that you can compare your favourite with.

Being a city close to the sea, tragedy is never far away and just a couple of hours further west along the coast is Kinsale Head, which is crowned by the Old Signal Tower, now a museum dedicated to those lost in the sinking of theThisLusitania.isfarmore than simply a memorial to the 1,198 passengers and crew who drowned when the ship was torpedoed in 1915, as the 360° panoramic views of the Atlantic coast and headland have to be experienced.

DOUGAL IT’S A CORKER!

Indeed, one of the towns within the harbour, Cobh, would be the last time the ill-fated ship made landfall. Today, Cobh hosts the Titanic experience, located in the old White Star ticket office, which is yet another worthy experience for visitors to the harbour.

During the Cromwellian years, Charles II had been exiled across the North Sea and it is during this period that he is understood to have taken an active interest in being afloat. When he returned to the UK in the 1660s, and with the Crown restored, the activity would soon build here and we have details of how Charles escaped the attentions of court life in London by heading down to Itchenor, where he kept his yacht the Mary (a present from the Dutch) whilst his mistress Nell Gwynn maintained a house just along the road from the present Itchenor Sailing Club. One of the King’s closest courtiers was Murrough O’Brien, who Charles would later ennoble as the Earl of Inchiquin. Leisure sailing in the harbour at Cork would grow and, in 1720, a descendant of Murrough invited some friends to formalise their activities under the umbrella of the ‘Water Club of the Harbour of Cork’ and the foundations were laid for a structure that leads directly to the wonderful premises of the Royal Cork Yacht Club today. Cork was, though, far more than just a centre for the landed gentry to play with their boats, as possession of the harbour provided a perfect base from which the Navy could exercise control of the Western Approaches and access to the English Channel. Various conflicts saw the construction of increasingly heavily armed fortifications that ensured that Cork and everything within the harbour would remain safe.

The more adventurous of us might opt for a longer sail westwards, yet this is a route that can be done in day long sections, never losing sight of land out on the beam. The exception would be the exciting lure of leaving the mainland behind and travelling out to the Scilly Isles (an area that the Diary will be featuring soon), but with just a little more planning, it is possible to tick all of the boxes and indulge in just a taste of true ‘blue water’ cruising.

A wonderful cruising ground, Cork retains many memories of its past, such as the old wartime heavy calibre gun standing sentinel up on the hill

IRISH EYES ARE SMILING

The gun smoke from Trafalgar had hardly cleared when a new source of smoke would be seen out afloat, as steam rapidly started to replace sail, and Cork took on a new role being a prime sheltered location for the coaling of ships ahead of the transAtlantic crossing.

F or some time now these diary pages have been looking at the trend across leisure yachting that has seen the sport embrace better and more capable boats. As we have reported over the last few years, boats today are getting bigger with the drift upwards in size showing little sign of being capped by the wider financial malaise. Meanwhile, everything from bow thrusters to furling sails make boat handling easier, whilst ‘rolling charts’ on a plotter have revolutionised navigation, making more extensive use of our boats not only easier, but more fun. But for the vast majority of sailors and powerboaters, we actually only use a small percentage of our boats’ capabilities, for even a cross channel sail is hardly ‘blue water’ sailing, as on a good day no sooner has the coastline sunk away astern than the destination is rising up above the horizon ahead.

without doubt, enjoy the claim of hosting the world’s oldest yacht club. Nestling up in a beautiful arm of the harbour at Crosshaven, the Royal Cork Yacht Club has been looking after the needs of sailors since 1720, a role that it continues to fill today as visiting yacht people will readily attest to.

The history of Cork takes us right back to the earliest beginning of leisure sailing, which as a pastime has even older roots over in the Netherlands.

At the same time Cork was an ideal stop off point for the steamers heading across to the US and, following the Great Famines in Ireland, there was a steady flow of displaced people heading out across the sea to find a better life in the ‘new world’. The Titanic took on passengers at Cork, with many of those who were lost being passengers from 3rd class – and with Irish origins.

Happily, Cork is now a bustling and vibrant city that visiting sailors can spend days exploring, whilst the sights of Cobh, Crosshaven, Blackrock and Spike Island (to name just a few) offer the perfect antidote to those fed up with the same old congested locations.

Solent based dinghy sailor David Henshall is a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of leisure boating. When looking for a longer cruise, beyond the UK, what could be better than a true Irish welcome at Cork.

COMING AND GOING

CORK CALLING Having left the crowded marinas of the South Coast behind to head westwards, the next step would be to round Land’s End, before heading across the Irish Sea to Southern Ireland, where the delights of the superb and unspoilt cruising grounds are waiting to be explored.

There are still plenty of lovely locations to wake up in which are away from the bustle of the marinas

It is, though, a blue water, foreign destination but one that is just twoday sail away and has that wonderful tradition of an Irish welcome on arrival. No wonder they say that the Irish eyes are smiling!

Top of the list of destinations would have to be the huge and magical harbour at Cork, which is not just a superb sailing area but is rich in a sailing heritage that is easily the match for the South Coast of England. Just how big the harbour is at Cork can be seen in the contested claims for it to be the world’s second largest natural harbour after Sydney Harbour. The bragging rights as to who actually gets the best of the rest award has long been hotly contested between Poole and Cork. The parochial home Cobh - a point of departure for so many, the town is now a wonderful location for cruising sailors to visit.

All images: David Henshall support might love to focus on the wonderful waters inside of Studland and Sandbanks, yet much of this is too shallow for the majority of yachts. Cork, on the other hand, is not just larger but is usable over far more of its expanse. Moreover, whilst us Solent sailors might think that Cowes is very much the source of the mother lode of leisure sailing, it is Cork which can,

“Layered with the sight and sounds, the impact of the smells of nature and being close to water on our mental and physical well-being is tangible. Here, in particular, there appears to be benefits of ocean air (ozone) from being close to sea, with negative ions being given off by large bodies of water (e.g. at the beach).”

calm - by getting out on the water to enjoy their boat. Matt Anzardo, Global Yacht Segment Manager at AkzoNobel Yacht Coatings, said: “We all know ‘that feeling’the one that sums up the exhilaration and satisfaction you get from spending time on the water. The AkzoNobel team share that love for boating; it is the foundation of our research, technologies and innovations. “As well as those sights, sounds and smells that all promote health, we know boat owners want their vessels looking and performing at their best. That is where we come in, with innovative, sustainable and beautifully aesthetic products for all kinds of www.yachtcoatings.com/en/gb/blue-gymvessels.”

ith the average person spending 90 per cent of their life indoors, the need to fuel up on the social, cognitive, emotional and physical health benefits of the great outdoors has never been greater. Combating work burnout and SAD (seasonal affective disorder), both of which can cause anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, is increasingly important. In our post-pandemic, hybrid workfrom-home lifestyles, going for a walk or run in the countryside, a hike or even a stroll in your local park are simple ways to get outdoors. However, Professor Charles Spence (pictured), from Oxford University’s Crossmodal Research Laboratory, believes there is an even greater prize. The professor, commissioned by coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel, collated his findings from 20 separate research papers on health and wellbeing, covering stress reduction, anxiety reduction, aggression reduction, ADHD symptom reduction, blood pressure reduction, reduced obesity, The emotional and physical benefits of being out in nature have been long documented, but a new academic study claims that the shimmering sights and sounds of a body of water are far better for us than any green space.

ON THE WATER The difference between passively going to the sea or to a lake, versus being out on the water, was another area explored by Professor Spence as he sought to understand the best well-being workout. With boat sales on the rise over the last few years and recreational boating an increasingly popular activity, those lucky enough to get out on boats are the biggestProfessorbeneficiaries.Spencesaid: “The difference between being literally on the water rather than simply being close to it links to increasingly popular notions of ‘embodied cognition’: the basic idea that we think with, and through, our bodies and not just with our “Beingbrains.onthe water promotes bodily awareness, given that we presumably need to pay attention to maintain our balance. It encourages a kind of mindful presence in the activity involved. There is also a very real pleasure associated with our attention being drawn to the bodily senses, such as touch and proprioception. Navigating on the water requires more attention to one’s surroundings than simply walking, an activity we can do on autopilot.” AkzoNobel’s yacht coatings division, which commissioned the study, seeks to empower and support boat owners to tap into ‘That Feeling’ - of joy, adrenaline or asthma and allergy reduction, better sleep, better mental health, increased prosocial behaviours and social connectedness, improved post-operative recovery, improved birth outcomes, improved child development, improved heart health, improved pain control, better eyesight and improvedFurther, mortality.Professor Spence assessed peer written studies on the overall health benefits of living near green space all over the world, the benefits of exercise that involve water and the effects of using less technology while on the water.

SOUND EFFECTS Professor Spence, in his paper entitled Multisensory Well-being and Boating states: “So-called blue space has even greater health and well-being benefits than green space. While the effect is often considered in terms of vision - perhaps unsurprising given that we are so visually dominant - there is a growing awareness of just how important the sounds of water and wildlife are to the beneficial effects of nature.“Theresults of research conducted in national parks across North America revealed that the sounds of water had the biggest positive effect on health and positive affect outcomes. Water sounds have also been shown to provide an effective foil to the stress-inducing anthropogenic noise of urban, typically transport,Associatedactivities.”sounds of the coast and boating also have strong positive connections. The sound of a spinnaker rattling in the breeze, the wind in the sails and the buzz of a powerboat

“Being by the beach has restorative and sleep-enhancing functions, as was well understood by some Victorian doctors who would often send their patients off to the coast to recuperate. The human immune system likely also benefits from increased exposure to biodiversity, to microorganisms in bacteria, protozoa and helminths, when out in nature.”

Ease of check-in, no queues at security, no baggage charges, no car hire costs, the advantage of being able to put your full allowance of Duty Free in your car and drive from door-to-door, all make taking a ‘car-cation’ by ferry an attractive option for travellers.” The company operates five passenger routes between Britain and Ireland and The Netherlands. With prices for a car and driver to Ireland starting at £119, and to the Netherlands starting at £61.50.

For many boating holidays we must, of course, travel to the charter base, which often requires a flight. However, there are increasingly popular alternatives. Stena Line, the world’s largest ferry company, has seen their travel business bounce back in Britain and Ireland in 2022. Figures for the first half of the year show that passenger numbers are back to pre-pandemic levels, while car numbers, in particular, are far higher than in 2019.

Windstar Cruises operates a fleet of six boutique sailing yachts carrying 148 -342 guests. The small ship cruise line announced the debut in Greece of its all-suite Star Plus Class Star Pride yacht, which is the third and final of Windstar’s Star Plus Class yachts to emerge from Italy’s Fincantieri shipyard following a lengthening transformation project. The three yachts, together with Windstar’s three classic sailing yachts, remain small enough to continue to visit special small ports and waterways around the world. Showing that cruising is well and truly back, in the spring the company reported the highest grossing week of cruise sales since the start of the pandemic and one of the biggest in its history. Windstar Cruises president Christopher Prelog said: “People are discovering the advantage of small, yacht-like, sailing and allsuite cruising to aspirational destinations.” Although the cruise company has cancelled its scheduled cruises in Asia this autumn, citing the continued uncertainty regarding ports reopening in the region, there will be other sailings. During October, Windstar will celebrate its 35th anniversary of operating cruises in Tahiti. All sailings aboard Wind Spirit and Star Breeze in Tahiti will join in the celebration with special events planned during the cruise. The cruise line has also drawn up a new beach bum’s delight of an itinerary beginning this winter. Beach Fun & Sun: A Remote Caribbean Getaway has seven days on some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean including stops in St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Barts, Anguilla, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda and Tortola. It can also be combined with Windstar’s Classic Caribbean for a two-week Windstarcruises.comcruise.

Plymouth Sound is a unique place where Western Europe’s largest naval base and fragile seagrass beds co-exist. It is a place where some of the world’s greatest voyages began and fishermen today still leave for the daily catch. At a time of enormous global challenges and climate change this unique environment and the golden thread between people and place is threatened. PSNMP provides an opportunity to nurture the innovation needed to completely reimagine how a landscape and its people can work together. Our historic marine landscape cannot be separated from the people who live and work in our coastal community, whether commercial fishing, shopping, naval defence, coastal leisure and tourism, marine research or blue technology. Now, at a critical time in our planet’s history, Plymouth is making a major statement about how collaboration can deliver transformation. The impact of the project is already being felt across the city. To date, more than 6,000 Plymouth residents have engaged at National Marine Park events, including an open weekend in April, Mini Splash events and July’s Big Blue Splash. Councillor Pat Patel, cabinet member for customer services, culture, leisure & sport, at Plymouth City Council, said: “We were thrilled to see so many of our community here in Plymouth engaging with the National Marine Park at the Big Blue Splash weekend. It was the perfect way to celebrate our first anniversary since our Heritage Horizon Award, but also a great opportunity to allow everyone to have a chance to shape what our future will look like. We want our future to be guided by the people of Plymouth – to create the people’s ‘Park in the Sea’.”

What’s happening?

n NMP Horizons Creative: A range of events and engagement activities to enable the park to be co-designed with local residents, communities and stakeholders. n NMP Horizons Innovate: Future tangible activities will include ‘give it a go’ activities for people across Plymouth for sailing/ paddleboarding and so on.

A survey commissioned by the Blue Marine Foundation and the National Trust for Jersey to gauge the public’s opinion on protecting Jersey’s waters found 85 per cent of people who responded wanted a Marine Park to be set up in Jersey within the next decade. However, earlier this year plans to create a National Marine Park were rejected by Jersey’s politicians. It will be interesting to see how well PSNMP achieves its aims and whether other areas around the UK decide to follow in Plymouth’s plymouthsoundnationalmarinepark.comfootsteps.

Last year it was reported that the Blue Marine Foundation had identified 10 areas around the coast that could be designated national parks within the next 10 years. England’s national parks (land) contribute billions annually to the economy, and national parks at sea could bring similarCharlesbenefits.Clover, executive director of the charity, said: “It is remarkable that we have no parks in the sea, after 70 years of national parks on land. Our natural heritage is right there, just off the beach, but paradoxically the public is hardly involved in the enjoyment or the stewardship of this island nation’s greatest asset.”

The Marine Park aims to improve the physical and social infrastructure surrounding the Sound, and use technology to engage people with it. The funding builds on this and includes five ‘gateways’ to the park, each with a particular focus to try to inspire more people to explore, connect with and enjoy the sea.

lymouth Sound is one of the world’s most important and visually stunning natural harbours and is home to protected marine life and seascapes. The city’s relationship with the water is integral to its identity and sense of place as Britain’s Ocean City; it is home to the largest naval base in Western Europe, is a global hub for marine leisure industries and is a historic tourist destination where pioneering voyagers set sail. It was only right, then, that this was the setting for the UK’s first MarineMorePark.than a park, this ‘Park in the Sea’ aims to transform lives, employment, education, volunteering and environment; re-establishing the bond between people and place that has defined Plymouth. The £9.5 million received from The National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2021 helped to make this vision a reality with the aim of changing lives of people in the community of Plymouth through engagement with the maritime heritage, landscape and nature and in turn protect and conserve our marine environment.

n NMP Horizons Involved: To become the ‘People’s Park in the Sea’ communities across Plymouth need to be part of the design team. There are lots of ways to get involved and shape the park’s future including the Give it a Go programme, STEM events and SailGP Inspire.

lymouth ound ational arine ar is the s first ar in the ea and is a 21st century park enabling a new collaboration between ocean, heritage and city.

One of the main aims of the project is to encourage greater community engagement with the marine environment and help everyone reconnect with theAwater.number of events and initiatives have been taking place, and many are ongoing, such as the Green Tourism Scheme. Led by Destination Plymouth this promotes sustainable tourism and encourages accreditation with the national Green Tourism scheme to strengthen Plymouth’s blue and green offer for visitors andThereresidents.hasalso been seagrass replanting to ‘rewild’ the seabeds in Plymouth Sound. Working with Ocean Conservation Trust new seagrass meadows are being established to tackle climate change and protect and improve biodiversity. Back in March 5G Smart Sound Connect was also launched, and is the world’s first ocean focussed 5G test bed - think marine autonomy, research, clean propulsion, smart shipping and environmental monitoring. A number of developments have resulted from increased funding to the area. Two new swimming pontoons, for example, have been installed in PSNMP. The pontoons have been made possible thanks to a grant worth £625,000 from the Getting Building Fund for a range of National Marine Park related projects. There are also several NMP Horizons initiatives: n NMP Horizons Inspired: Through a programme of school engagement and They are: n Tinside – for health and wellbeing activities n National Marine Aquarium – a hub for nature and the environment n Mount Batten – active recreation n Mount Edgcumbe – learning about the Sound’s history including over 600 wrecks that lie beneath the waves n Smart Sound – harnessing the power of the latest digital technology The park has been co-designed with the communities to ensure people can engage and have a lifelong connection, fostering positive behaviours for individuals and heritage. Through engaging communities with the heritage and natural landscape it is hoped there will be a positive change through more active and healthier communities, awareness of environmental and climate challenges and positive ocean health behaviours. This must be the ‘People’sCouncilPark’.leader Nick Kelly said: “The park aims to improve access to Plymouth’s natural and maritime heritage to ensure that all our citizens can enjoy the significant benefits that being on, in, under and next to the water provides. By increasing community connection with the natural environment, we aim to improve engagement with sustainability and ocean protection, improve the health, wellbeing and resilience of our community and boost the blue economy.”

CA SERVICECREWING

In July’s All At Sea the CA shared information about the CA and Groupo Trabajo Orca Atlantica collaboration and launch of a new online orca reporting form, which aims to gather data and investigate orcas interacting with vessels primarily along the Iberian Peninsula. The phenomenon, which began in 2020, sees orcas often damaging small yachts and other vessels along the south and west coasts of Spain and Portugal. It is linked with the migration of tuna exiting the Mediterranean from the Strait of Gibraltar and heading west and north around the Iberian Peninsula, primarily between June and October.

Membership Offers - the CA is offering membership discounts throughout the show, with 10 per cent off* the first year of full membership and no joining fee. If you are a member of a partner boat owner association/club/ organisation or are referred by an existing member, the discount increases to 25 per cent*. New members will also receive a complimentary CA Burgee and an invitation to a welcome seminar at the CA clubhouse in London. (*paying by Direct Debit) Get Social - as always, members and non-members are invited to the on-stand hospitality from 1600 on 22 September. Meet the team, catch up with cruising friends, talk all things boating and enjoy a few drinks.

Once sufficient reports have been received, the CA will compare and present a statistical summary of data received against the same data set reported by boats on passage through the affected area without an interaction. ORCA PROJECT UPDATE

The Solent served up a sensational week of conditions at Cowes Week, with a light breeze through to 25+ knots providing plenty of thrills and spills, along with some epic starts off the iconic Royal Yacht Squadron line. This marked the second year of the Cruising Association as presenting sponsor of the Club Cruiser Class at Cowes Week. The CA’s motivation is to encourage and celebrate the many sailors who enjoy competitive racing alongside exploring cruising waters around the world. The growing popularity of cruising boat divisions in multi-class race weeks was evident in the 25-boat fleet, up on entries from last year. The boats were split into white and blue fleets for seven days of racing, with the level of competitiveness demonstrated by nine different boats claiming finishes inside the top three. The final day was a tense affair, as three boats – Scandal, Aqua and Panda of Hamble - were in the running for podium places. An impressive run of form saw Scandal, a Sun Odyssey 349, earn a sufficient points margin to discard their final day’s second place finish in the blue fleet and claim overall victory. In the white fleet, the fight for second and third overall was a matter of who finished ahead, with the race 7 win going to Aqua with Panda of Hamble finishing in third place, to end the series on equal points. The tiebreak advantage was awarded on countback to Aqua. CowesWyeth/Week

In welcoming visitors to the stand, Lucy Hyslop, CA general manager, said: “Whether you are just starting out and cruising in local waters, are planning to journey under power along the inland waterways of Europe or are a seasoned boat owner heading for more distant shores and blue water sailing, the benefits of CA membership are many and varied. We look forward to welcoming you.”

SCANDAL WINS CLUB CRUISER CLASS

The CA reporting platform is intended to assist with and build upon the work already undertaken by the GTOA study by improving communication with the boating community and enhancing research to learn lessons that will assist crews to avoid interactions with orcas or reduce the impact on their boats if an interaction occurs, as well as to identify patterns of orca behaviour. Skippers are invited to report ‘interactions’ and ‘uneventful’ passages along the Iberian Peninsula. Since early June more than 160 reports have been submitted. In a change to behaviour over the past two years, orca ‘interactions’ have been reported as far north as off the coast of Brest, France.

The anonymised reports are published online on an interactive map, so users can see where the ‘interactions’ and ‘uneventful passages’ are occurring, read the nature of what happened and what the skippers did to shorten or end theTheinteraction.CAhasalso published the comparative data, which enables users to see if there are any noticeable differences in the factors being reported. These factors include sea state/ wind speed, boat speed, day/night, cloud cover, distance off land and sea depth.

YOU ARE INVITED: The CA runs a comprehensive autumn/winter lecture and event programme from October to April. Watchet town has a wide range of good pubs, restaurants and cafes, all within walking distance of the marina. Here are just a few, which are worth a visit: Pubs: Esplanade Club, The Star, The Bell, Pebbles. Cafes: Sam’s Deli, Corner Café, Marina Café, Watchet Fish and Chips. There is also a Co-op supermarket 100m from the marina.

ACCESS By land: Accessed off the A39 which runs along the north coast of Somerset off the M5 by Bridgewater. By rail: Watchet Marina Office is located by Watchet town’s train station, so visiting by rail provides easy access to the marina. By sea: Watchet Marina is located within the Bristol Channel and can be accessed up to 2.5 hours either side of high tide. When approaching the marina use VHF channel 80 or contact the marina office on 01984 322 230. Watchet is fronted by a rocky foreshore which dries out for half a mile. The harbour is tidal and the outer harbour dries completely. During the marina access period the flow across the harbour entrance is predominantly westbound and attention must be given to this flow when approaching the harbour entrance. The entrance to the harbour lies between two breakwaters and is 28m wide. The breakwaters are marked with a lighthouse and beacon. Vessel movements through the marina lock gate are controlled by automatic traffic light signals. up to the present day as a man-made harbour supporting a modern marina. Watchet really came to prominence in the Saxon period and was important enough to have its own mint. Coins minted in Watchet have been found in Scandinavia, suggesting that they were used to buy off Viking raiders. Watchet harbour was the inspiration for the poem The Ancient Marina by the romantic poet Samuel Coleridge. In 1797 he walked over the Quantock Hills from his home in Nether Stowey, with his friends William and Dorothy Wordsworth, and came upon Watchet. It has been said that looking down at the town from St Decuman’s Church gave him the inspiration for his poem. A statue was commissioned to commemorate this important link. Dunster Castle and Watermill, run by the National Trust, is close to Watchet and boasts dramatic views and subtropical gardens. Located dramatically on a wooded hill, a castle has existed here since at least Norman times. It has an impressive medieval gatehouse and ruined tower giving a reminder of its turbulent history.

CRUISING Lundy Island is a lovely cruising location from Watchet Marina. The island is a bird watcher’s paradise with its own character and sheltered bay in which to moor. A weekend’s sail to Ilfracombe natural harbour, located at the southern entrance of the Bristol Channel, is another pleasant cruising destination. Other possible locations across the Bristol Channel include Bristol, Cardiff and Portishead.

THINGS TO DO The harbour has been of enormous importance to Watchet town since the earliest times, from its formation as a natural harbour after the last ice age

Since its launch in September 2020, MDL Marinas’ customers have earned over 1.3 million pounds with MDL’s Otium Rewards loyalty programme. Designed to give a more personalised marina experience, it is a unique pointsbased loyalty programme which offers MDL’s customers, whether visitors, monthly or annual berth holders, the chance to generate points from purchasing MDL services. 545,521 points have been ‘spent’ on MDL products, including fuel, boatyard services or berthing, creating over half a million pounds in savings for boaters. Further adding great value to its customers through its Otium loyalty programme, MDL recently increased the number and variety of rewards available to members through exclusive partnerships with its on-site tenants. Points can now be redeemed against 5* accommodation, meals out, boat charter experiences and essential boat maintenance work, with more opportunities to make savings being added all the time. It seems it was a successful introduction. I managed to get two 10 packs of 330ml cans, 4.8 per cent abv, for £20 from Amazon. Also online, Beer Hawk has six litre kegs for £33.99 and 10-beer packs for £15, plus delivery (beerhawk.co.uk).Itisaninteresting beer and worth trying if you spot any. Here is hoping new supplies arrive and that by the time you read this ‘Che’ is back in town.

C

hernigivske is, or was, the number one beer brand in Ukraine. Known locally as ‘Che’, it is a crisp and refreshing lager with fruity aromas and light hoppy notes. First brewed in 1988, it is a traditional Ukrainian lager loved and shared across theAftercountry.theRussian invasion, like many Ukrainian businesses, it could not continue to operate and the brewery in Kharkiv closed its doors at the end of February. AB InBev, the owner of a raft of international beer brands, has been able to set up three breweries in western Europe to continue to produce Chernigivske. In May its UK arm, Budweiser Brewing Group, announced the introduction of Chernigivske into UK retailers, with profits from all sales going to humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine and the intention to grow distribution across the UK . Co-op and Aldi were announced as the first to join the promotion and most supermarkets now list the beer on their websites with many now listing it as out of stock. Aldi told me that it launched in store on 1 May and was only available “while stocks last”.

The demand for non-alcoholic drinks aimed at adults continues to grow as a serious category in its own right since lifestyle choices changed over the Covid lockdown period and fuelled the switch to home drinking. Alcohol-free brews also now deserve a legitimate place within the ship’s drinks locker. It is the drinks that start out as alco-free from inception production and branding rather than non-alcoholic versions of established drinks brands like Budweiser, Peroni and Doom Bar that are driving theIngrowth.July, there was a two-day festival in Brighton dubbed the Mindful Drinking Festival. It was organised by Club Soda whose aim is to help people live well by being more mindful about drinking alcohol. The event included 19 masterclass sessions on subjects such as cocktails and how to manage your mental health, and some 42 original branded alcohol-free products were on show. One that caught my eye is Lucky Saint Lager, a co-sponsor of the festival, which is brewed in a traditional way according to German Reinheitsgebot lager regulations. First it is brewed to five per cent alcohol, unfiltered, and then the alcohol is removed by a vacuum distillation process leaving it at 0.5 per cent which classifies it as ‘alcohol free’. But it is a little pricey, costing £1.80 for 330ml at Sainsbury’s compared with Doom Bar Zero at the special price of £1 for 500ml. The Brighton Festival is not the only event organised through the Club Soda. For more information go to joinclubsoda. com and/or mindfuldrinkingfestival.com
