In the News Rapid EU Help for Ukrainian Refugees In early March the EU announced that they would reintroduce a 2001 “Temporary Protection Directive” that gives people the right to live in an EU country for up to three years, and this was agreed on March 10th. The Spanish Minister for the Interior, Isabel Rodríguez,announced that refugees would be able to go to central police stations and dedicated centres in Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante and Málaga (where the majority of Ukrainians live), where there would be interpreters and overnight accommodation if needed. In Almería province applicants need to obtain an appointment at the National Police station in Almería city and the department is open from 4pm to 10pm, with a daytime phone number for advice or queries. The aim is that within 24hrs the paperwork will be completed by the Ministry for Asylum and Refugees that will grant residency (irrespective of family ties), and an N.I.E number will be allocated, as long as a refugee does not have a criminal record or arrest warrant in place. On March 20th a spokesperson from the Junta de Andalucía announced that the applications for 775 people were being processed and another 800 had made appointments. Once completed, the refugees immediately become legal residents, can obtain work and are covered for health care and education. By March 19th, 237 Ukrainian children were in schools in Andalucía. Residency lasts for an initial 12 months that can be extended for three years and financial help is available that member states can claim back from the EU. It is being pointed out that the application for residency does not need to be done if a person is intending to go back to Ukraine as soon as possible. As with Brits coming to Spain, they can stay here for 90 days. It was then announced, that is not part of the EU initiative, that Ukrainians already living and registered in Spain but had not applied for residency would be invited to do so. There are calculated to be between 12,000 to 15,000 people in this category.

Local Help for Ukrainians There are 112,000 Ukrainians who live in Spain, and centres have been set up in many cities and towns including Almería, to receive humanitarian items for onward travel to Ukraine. Several Ukrainians and other nationalities made the 36 hour, 3,900km

journey to take donated items with them and rescue relatives and other refugees. Special mention has to be made of María Moreno, the owner of the Cabo Norte restaurant in Mojácar, who decided to go there with her Ukrainian friend and employee Natalia. Very quickly, other people announced that they wanted to go there as well. Finally, there was a convoy of five vehicles to take supplies, and 30 mothers and children were brought back. Mojácar town hall agreed to defray some of the expenses. In Albox a coach operator provided two coaches that were loaded up with supplies and brought back refugees.

COVID-19 in Almería Province The numbers of cases in Almería province are fairly static with about 200 new cases every day, but it has been hoped that by now daily cases would be around 100. A feature is that the majority of people who become infected are in the age group 12-19, and then over the age of 80. The total numbers are about 300 cases per 100,000 that is slightly higher than the average in Andalucía of 282. 1,150 people in Almería province have died since the pandemic started, but towards the end of March there were only 24 people in hospital, of which three were in intensive care. During March, the ‘EMA’, the European Medical Agency stated that “at present” they saw no necessity for a fourth COVID-19 vaccination for the general public. They stated that the efficacy of the existing vaccines is still not fully understood, and it is necessary to see how the Omicron variant plays out. The fourth dose has been approved for 62,500 people in Almería province over the age of 40, who are particularly vulnerable. This includes people who have had transplants, are receiving chemotherapy, suffer from Down’s syndrome or have an immune deficiency from contracting AIDS.

New Torrecárdenas Centre Owners A South African real estate company, Lighthouse Properties PLC, has bought the Torrecárdenas shopping centre for 172 million euros from the company ‘Bogaris Retail’ that built and opened it in 2018. Mercadona, Leroy Merlin, Media Markt, Yelmo, Primark and Zara, among many others, make up the 100 commercial and leisure companies, spread over 60,000m2, and it has had more than 7 million visitors since it opened. Bogaris Retail announced that they were intending to sell the centre a few months ago, with a suggested purchase price of 200 million euros.

Wearing Masks Jesús Aguirre, the Andalucía Councillor for Health, has stated that it is too early to stop wearing masks inside premises until the overall infection figures show a further reduction. Just after midnight on Sunday, March 13th the emergency services were alerted that the IES secondary school in Garrucha was on fire. Firemen managed to control it after one hour in various parts of the school, and the fire was classified as arson. The Guardia Civil police stated that investigations were under way, including studying images from CCTV. The cost of repairs was put at 100,000 euros but the school opened normally the following Tuesday, except for some pupils who were told to have virtual learning at home temporarily. Pupils entered the school by an alternative access as the main entrance had been affected by the fire.

The UK journalist Tom Chesshyre is a train fanatic and is publishing a book in April with lists of his favourite journeys in Spain. Of the top three, the train from Almería to Granada is described as one of the most beautiful, and in March he published some advance information from his book in the Guardian newspaper. He narrates that after passing through hectares of greenhouses, it then passes through desert scenery where famous films were made at Tabernas, stops at Guadix that has cave houses, has views of the Sierra Nevada and then fertile agriculture and mountains as a landscape before arriving in Granada. Normal travellers who use the train from Almería to Granada may probably agree that it is scenic, but it takes a minimum of 2hrs 30mins for the 109km journey. There are usually three trains a day and a pre-booked ticket is between 16 and 20 euros.

English monarchs have lived at Buckingham Palace since 1837, but it is going through a very major renovation project that includes complete rewiring, due to be finished in 2027. At the time of the Platinum Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth will move back to Buckingham Palace as there are a multitude of special events in the palace, mall and gardens. It seems quite likely that Buckingham Palace will not be the home of the English monarch until Prince Charles becomes King.

High Speed Drivers On March 1st Guardia Civil police clocked a driver doing 184km/h on a single carriageway road with a speed limit of 90km/h from Huércal-Overa to Pulpí. The Attractiveness of Masks Pamela Parada is a member of the Spanish College of Psychologists and has been investigating why many people think a person wearing a mask is more attractive. She states that a person wearing a mask only shows symmetrical features such as eyes and eyebrows, and not variations of noses that are distinctive, or lips and teeth that may not be considered ideal by the onlooker. She also considers that eyes are neutral and do not show facial characteristics that may show displeasure or antagonistic emotions. In her opinion, with only the eyes visible an onlooker imagines that all the facial features are attractive and this inspires confidence and positive feelings. Her results have been published in the ‘Journal of Personality and Individual Differences’.

‘Dia’ Owner Sanctioned One Russian multi-billionaire with links to Spain who cannot travel in the EU and the UK has had his assets frozen in various countries, and his personal jet impounded. Mijaíl Fridman, aged 57, is the owner of the Spanish supermarket chain Dia. With branches in Portugal, Argentina and Brazil there are a total of 6,000 stores. He took over Dia in Spain in 2019 with a 77.7% stake through his holding company ‘LetterOne’ based in Luxemburg. He is also the owner of the supermarket chain X5, the mobile phone company Veon, and was a shareholder in Holland and Barrett until he resigned from the board when the sanctions were put in place. He is one of the founders of the Russian Alfa Bank that is subject to sanctions, and the financial entity ‘Forbes’ put his worth at 12 billion US dollars in 2021. He lives mostly in London, and the Sunday Times has listed him as the 11th wealthiest Russian in the UK. He is considered to be in the close circle of President Putin’s advisors in the Kremlin, but on March 1st he published a letter to all the employees and associates of ‘LetterOne’ criticising the conflict with Ukraine and asking for an immediate withdrawal. Airbus Drones from Seville and Cádiz The military version of the Airbus, the A400M, is assembled in Seville and there is another Airbus company who supply components in Cádiz. It has been announced that the Seville company will be responsible for making the fuselage of the ‘Eurodrone’, a joint project between Spain, Germany, Italy and France, and stabilising fins will be made in Cádiz. The multi-purpose drones are 16m long, have a wingspan of 30m and a height of 6m. They will fly at a maximum of 500km/h with flights of 1840 hours. There are 20 ‘packages’ that include a drone and two base stations and Spain will buy four. It is intended that construction starts in 2023 with test flights taking place in 2025 and the first deliveries due in 2028. Spain will contribute 23% of the cost with 1.4 billion euros from the Department of Industry from 2023-2028, and 1.8 billion euros from the Ministry of Defence from 2029-2035.

Continuing Reductions in Crime In 2021, in Almería province, criminal infractions including all crimes whether minor or serious, went down to 35.7 per 1,000 inhabitants which is six points less than the national average. There was a lower number of 32.5 per 1,000 in 2020 but this is explained by the COVID-19 restrictions with a very large reduction in mobility from individuals and vehicles. The 2021 figures were also less than Andalucía as a whole, where it was 37.2 per 1,000. Numbers of reported crimes have fallen in Almería province for the last 12 years from 44.2 infractions per 1,000. Pedro Fernández, the government delegate in Andalucía, states that Almería province is a very safe area. He thanked all the police forces for continuing their war against crime, and promised an increase in police numbers to further reduce the crime rate.

Petrol and Diesel Prices With the very steep rise in the cost of petrol and diesel in Spain, many garages are offering “low-cost” fuel. Typically, if the average cost of buying 55 litres of fuel is 99 euros, low-cost fuel may only cost 92 euros. There have been questions as to why the cheaper prices are possible, such as a belief that the number of litres shown at the pump is not the same as the amount put into the tank. The Ministry of Transport have stated that all petrol stations are regularly inspected by the Spanish equivalent of Trading Standards and there are stickers on all the pumps that show the dates when this has been done. The slight allowance of up to 0.5% variation in the amount shown at the pumps is the same at all garages. Another question is whether the cheaper fuel is bad for vehicles, and the answer is that the fuels are perfectly safe. The difference in price is that the major suppliers of fuel put in some additives that improve fuel consumption slightly, but only noticeable over a large mileage. Another reason for low-cost fuel is that quite often the petrol stations are self-service with no shop, vehicle washing arches or sales of gas bottles. The lack of these keeps staff overheads down. On March 29th, proposals to reduce the cost of petrol and diesel fuel were to be announced in Spain, and a saving of 15% is not difficult. IVA (VAT) on electricity has been reduced from 21% to 10% and the same thing can be done with fuel. Fixed duties or taxes in Spain are 47 céntimos per litre for petrol and 38 céntimos for diesel. The EU specified minimum duty is only 36 céntimos and 33 céntimos respectively, so duty in Spain can be brought down to the lower rates.

In the News Museum Expansion The Ibáñez museum in Olula del Rio has been dramatically expanded which allows all the paintings, sculptures and photographs to go on display. Up to now, 40% of the complete collection has remained in storage. The collection was started by the painter Andrés García Ibáñez (born in Olula del Rio in 1971) from 1996-2004, and includes painting and photographs from diverse artists. Paintings include a Goya, Spanish artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, and several by the famous Spanish painter, Federico de Madrazo, 1815-1894. All the works on display have information in Spanish and English, and the museum is normally open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 11am to 2pm.

Very Reduced Flu Cases A somewhat unexpected result of the pandemic in 2020 / 2021 was that cases of flu and bronchitis were greatly reduced. The same thing happened in the flu season December 2021 to February this year with a further reduction in numbers. This is put down to the vast population being vaccinated against COVID-19 which is a type of respiratory illness, and the third booster dose given to the elderly. Mask wearing in external and internal areas has also slowed down getting the flu, with less air-born transmission. In our province ,133,000 people had the annual jab, and 80,600 were over the age of 65. Less children got the flu, although they normally shrug it off, but the traditional problem has been that they pass this on to other family members, particularly grandparents. This has been greatly reduced as well.

New Social Security Payments Proposals are being put through the Spanish parliament which alter the amount of Social Security payments for self-employed people. At present, the monthly amount payable goes from 294 euros to 991 euros, depending on net income. The selfemployed whose net earnings are less than 700 euros per month will pay the reduced amount of 204 euros, so a saving of 1,080 euros per annum, which will apply to an estimated 1.3 million people. On net earnings of 700-900 euros per month, the reduced payment will be 244 euros which is 50 euros less than at present, so an annual saving of 600

euros. On a net monthly income of 900-1,125 euros there will be a saving of 360 euros and from 1,1251,300 euros an annual saving of 312 euros. From 1,300-1,500 euros net monthly, Social Security payments will be reduced annually by 382 euros, but the existing rates are still in place for net monthly income from 1,500-3,620 euros. For monthly income more than 3,620 euros, the Social Security monthly payment will be a new amount of 1,123 euros. Selfemployed persons pay tax on their income after the deductions for outgoings, and they have been able to add on another 5% for expenses that are difficult to quantify. This additional deduction will be increased to 7%.

A Tough Time for Cinemas Numbers of people going to cinemas fell during the pandemic when they had to shut or have reduced audience numbers, and filmgoers were asked to book online to stop queues at the box office. With less restrictions in 2021, total audience number went up to 488,000 in Almería city, but this was a loss of 61% of audience figures from 2019. Income in 2021 in all of Andalucía was 2.7 billion euros, but in 2019 it was 6.7 billion. Another problem has been filmmakers putting their films online to try and get in some additional income, and this has meant less “blockbusters” that can only be seen in cinemas. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ drew the biggest audiences throughout Spain that brought in 18 billion euros, but the next best was ‘Fast and Furious 9’ with 9.5 billion in ticket sales. To try and get in more money ticket prices have been on the rise, and the average price of 5 euros in 2019 has gone up to 5 euros 70 céntimos at the Yelmo complex in the Torrecárdenas centre. In contrast, for the films shown at the municipal Teatro Apolo theatre in Almería city, the entrance fee has been kept at 4 euros. In Roquetas de Mar at the Gran Plaza, the entrance fee has gone up to 6 euros 20 céntimos.

The penalties for doing this are a prison term from six months to four years, and the loss of a licence from one to four years. As we have previously mentioned in an article about comprehensive insurance, leaving the scene of an accident, as it is a criminal offence, may mean that the insurance company will not pay out for any claim. If there are injuries a driver will normally be covered, but if not, they are personally liable for any costs that can be substantial. The couple on the motorbike were taken to hospital, but fortunately they were not seriously injured.

Illegal Squatters in Vera Vera town hall are setting up an anonymous contact procedure to encourage people to report the existence of squatters. Another recommendation is to have some furniture in an empty property that gives the impression that it is a home. This gives an owner more protection. Illegally squatting in a “home” will be regarded as more serious than squatting in an empty property.

New ‘ERTE’ Scheme for Travel Agents The ‘ERTE’ scheme was put in place in 2020 and paid 70% of a worker’s pay if there was no work, providing the employer kept them on their books for a period of six months after the scheme finished. At the peak of the scheme there were 3.4 million workers who were being subsidised. It was consistently extended and from April 1st it will still apply to any employees in the travel agency sector who are still struggling. At the end of February, it was stated that there were 11,800 travel sector employees who had no work, and this was 30% of the total number without work in Spain. Employers have to set up a “requalification” procedure that will allow their employees to take up another position in the company, or with a different company. In return, an employer is given a 40% discount on the Social Security payments they have to make. If no retraining scheme is in place, the discount on Social Security payments is reduced.

New Help with Electricity Bills At the end of March, the EU planned to introduce regulations in member states to help reduce and cap the price of electricity. Spain asked that they did this last October, but the reply was that it was a matter for individual states. Because of the war in Ukraine, and the intention that eventually the amount of gas and oil coming to the EU from Russia can be substantially reduced, the EU have decided to act. One of the proposals is that stocks of gas should be increased to the maximum to help with the need next winter. Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish prime Minister, has announced that the reduction on the rate of IVA (VAT) on electricity bills (from 21% to 10%) will continue until June. The normal 5.1% duty on electricity will remain at 0.5%, and the 7% tax that supply companies pay to the state will continue to be scrapped. The governments of Spain and Portugal, who share the same energy supply and costs procedure, are asking Brussels that the cost of electricity is capped at 180 euro per megawatt hour (MWh). On March 8th the average hourly price was 545 euros per MWh with an evening peak of 700 euros. The proposal is that energy costs above the 180 euros cost would be paid from an EU fund. We comment on the problems in the EU regarding gas and oil in an article.

It is designed to be able to supply seeds in the aftermath of a nuclear war, other catastrophe, or major problems from climate change, which could be used to grow plants to feed 7.8 billion people. There are one million frozen seed variations from 5,000 different species from 200 countries, but not from Spain. A Unesco World Heritage Site? Los Millares in Almería province is considered to be of exception cultural and historic significance and the most important site in Europe from the Copper Age, between 3,500 and 2,200 BC, and the oldest city in the Iberian Peninsula. It has fortified walls, dwellings, workshops and public buildings along with a necropolis. It was discovered in 1891 when the Almería-Linares railway line was being built and was excavated by the famous Belgian archaeologist, Luis Siret, and the Spaniard, Pedro Flores. It covers 150 hectares and was built on a hill alongside the river Andarax and the Huéchar rambla. At the peak occupation period it is thought to have had 1,000 inhabitants who discovered how to dig open mines and smelt copper ore to produce weapons, tools and jewellery. A request has been made that it is awarded a Unesco World Heritage Site category, and this has the full approval of the Spanish Department Continued ....

One Wrong Word! It may almost seem like a joke, but a Roman Catholic priest in a church in Phoenix Arizona has been severely criticised with tremendous ramifications. Between 2005 and February 2021 he conducted thousands of baptisms, including for Catholic converts, but he said a wrong word. Instead of saying, “I baptise you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost” he said, “We baptise you….” The Vatican, through their Holy See Delegate in the US, have strongly pointed out that using the word “I” relates to Jesus Christ who atoned for all our sins through his sacrifice, and

“We” is a collective term for the congregation that has no significance. People he baptised are being asked to go for a second baptism and application forms and a FAQ section have been published on the church website! The Roman Catholic church teachings are that everybody is born with “original sin” handed down from Adam’s choice to go against the word of God and eat the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, which was a sin. Gas & Oil Supplies from Russia

here are real fears in parts of Europe that the crisis in Ukraine could have enormous ramifications as regards imports of Russian gas and liquid natural gas (LNG). In Spain, only 5.8% of liquid natural gas comes from Russia. There are seven de-gasification conversion terminals in Spain where the liquid gas arrives in special tanker ships that store it at 160 degrees below zero, and it is then converted back to normal gas. Of the seven terminals, there is one at Cartagena and another at Huelva in Andalucía. 35% of liquid natural gas coming to Spain is from the US and is discharged in Barcelona, 13% comes from Nigeria, and 25% of imports are natural gas, partly from the undersea pipeline from Algeria to Almeria. Liquid gas is much more expensive than normal gas because of the transport and conversion processes at both ends.

The shutting down of the SWIFT transfer system does not currently affect the Russian banks that deal with payments for gas and oil, to keep the supplies flowing.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station On April 26th, 1986, an explosion caused a “meltdown” in the number four reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Northern Ukraine, which was part of the USSR. It sent a radioactive cloud into the atmosphere that was carried to nearby countries including Sweden, and a 300 square mile area around the plant was evacuated. The authorities admitted that there had been an explosion on April 28th caused after a cooling test by the engineers that went terribly wrong. 28 people were killed, with another 100 injured, and it was initially stated that at least 4,000 people exposed to a high level of radiation would die of radiation related cancers.

On the sand dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in December 1903, they made the first flight of the “Wright Flyer”, a motor driven aircraft that left the ground for 12 seconds and travelled 120 feet. Going to Work in the UK

This applies to all nationalities since January 1st 021, as a result of Brexit. The days of non-UK citizens including EU nationals going to the UK to look for work are over.

The cost of the visa is £610 for up to three years and £1,220 for up to five years, but the sponsor company may pay this for suitable applicants. For the “shortage” occupations the amounts are £464 and £928. In addition, there is a fee of £624 per year for access to the NHS, and the same amount for family members. For 28 of the 30 days prior to obtaining a visa, a person has to have £1,270 in a UK bank account.

As of this January, official figures from the Ministry of Labour gave the number of job vacancies in the UK as 1.3 million, and the numbers of unemployed as 1.8 million, although this was a slight drop from December 2021. Current UK requirements for foreign workers are that they have to have a visa, equivalent to a work permit and score 70 points out of a total of 100, and visas are only available to “skilled workers” (with the exception of some vacancies in the NHS). To apply for a skilled worker vacancy, a person has to consult the list of companies that have been officially approved as “sponsor companies” and obtain a job offer, hiring promise, or a precontract. The applicant obtains 20 points for being a skilled worker and 20 points from the approved company job. Another 10 points is awarded if they can prove that they have passed a “Secure English Language Test” from an approved provider, or come from a country where English is the national language. If they can’t comply with the English language requirement, they are not able to apply for a visa. The level of education has to be the equivalent of A-levels which gives another 10 points. The jobs they apply for must have a starting salary of £26,500 or the “going rate” if this is higher. There is a long list of scarce ‘STEM’ occupations where there is a distinct shortage of workers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and the salary in these cases can be 80% of the minimum or going rate. Complying with the salary requirement gives another 20 points.

For a wide range of jobs in the NHS where there is a shortage of workers, the level of English requirement is less demanding. The visa fee is £232 and £464 and the salary has to be same as the national rate for each type of job, but paying for annual NHS treatment does not apply. Applications to work in the non-NHS healthcare sector can be made and there are UK agencies that will recruit workers and guide them through the system. Despite the shortage of workers for occupations such as lorry drivers, agricultural or meat processing industry workers, there has only been a very limited allowance, or temporary time periods, for workers to come to the UK. The “skilled worker” categories exclude many areas where people are needed, such as being an au pair which is no longer authorised. Some UK companies are prepared to set on nonUK employees who work from home, in the country where they live. This avoids all the normal requirements!

Community News Funding for Mojácar Maribel Sánchez Torregrosa, the Andalucía delegate in Almería, recently met up with Rosa María Cano, the mayoress of Mojácar at the Parador hotel. A number of people attended the meeting where investment and funding in Mojácar was promised. Maribel Sánchez stated that there were a number of historical requests that were going to be addressed including a new sewage treatment centre, further restoration of the Río Aguas, and the provision of the new health centre. She stated that the health centre construction contract for 3.4 million euros, paid by the Junta, would be put out for tender during March on the site provided by Mojácar town hall. As regards the new 23.7 million euros sewage treatment plant it will serve Bédar, Los Gallardos, Garrucha, Turre and Mojácar. Additional work to clean and restore the 21.4km of the Río Aguas will cost 3 million euros out of the total project cost of 6 million euros.Another project that was discussed was the provision of a bus station with a budget cost of 686,000 euros. Other work that will be carried out is improvements to the beach facilities.

Help Us...to Help Them...and You! by Chrissie Cremore Trapping...Neutering...Returning. These three words are constantly on the agenda for the PAWSPATAS animal shelter. Two feral adult cats can can have 3/4 litters per year; averaging 4/8 kittens. The astonishing fact is that in just 7 years a single pair of cats and their offspring can produce a staggering total of 420,000 kittens! Many people do not realise that a feral female should be neutered before it is regularly fed. Surviving on scraps does not produce kittens but once a female is on a steady diet this will encourage breeding. One of the saddest stories known to the cattery was when someone had been feeding a colony in Mojácar which rapidly grew to at least 50 cats. The person who had fed them had not thought about neutering at all and then realised she needed help. PAWS-PATAS were able to neuter 20 but in the meantime someone had put poison down and wiped out the whole colony, including the ones who had been neutered. So

Levante Almeriense Firefighters Donate to the Mojácar Red Cross For Ukraine Mojácar Red Cross held a successful open day attended by residents and mayor s and representatives of the municipalities of Mojácar, Turre, Garrucha and Carboneras, as well as the President of the Almería Red Cross, Antonio Alastrué Latorre. Thanks to the stalls set up by the association, visitors were able to see the work they carry out in the different areas in which they work.

Community News The most moving moment of the day was when their local president, Concepción Rivero, spoke to offer her thanks, in the form of a plaque, to the Levante Almeriense Firefighting Consortium for their constant selfless and invaluable assistance. Francisco Flores, the Consortium of Firefighters Chief, collected the Mojácar Red Cross recognition on their behalf. Throughout the year, the firefighters help various charities, as well as the Mojácar Red Cross and children admitted to Huércal-Overa hospital to make their hospitalisation a happier experience. The Levante Almeriense Firefighters Chief announced the plans for this year, which include buying toys to make the hospital stays more pleasant and a special donation to the “Argar” charity, which works with children affected by cancer. The surprise for the Mojácar Red Cross members came when the Chief of the Levante Almeriense Firefighters, Francisco Flores, handed over a cheque for 2,500 euros, which they hope can be used for the extra work they are carrying out due to the war in Ukraine.

Lisauskaite was the first female to cross the finish line and 3rd overall. Age group prizes went to Jan Murton, Kirsty Ratcliffe, Kerry Davis, Corinne Cherel and Patricia Mulcahy. The winner finished in a very fast 16:34 and in total 177 runners and walkers crossed the finish line, many wearing the pink and white t-shirts they received when they collected their race numbers. Trophies galore for Los Bandidos in Carboneras An impressive 22 runners represented Los Bandidos at the II Carrera / Marcha Solidaria de la Mujer in Carboneras on Sunday 13 March. The semifinal and final of the competition for the best group will start the carnival and will take place on April 22nd and 25th at Teatro Apolo and the Maestro Padilla Auditorium respectively. The official opening ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 1st and the various carnival processions, including the ones for children, will take place May 5th-15th. The major procession will be on Saturday, May 7th from 12 noon and the final event, the “Burying of the Sardine”, will close the carnival on May 15th.

The New CEO

A man rushes his limp dog to the veterinarian. The doctor pronounces the dog dead. The agitated man demands a second opinion. The vet goes into the back room and comes out with a cat. "Well," the vet replies, "I would only have charged you 50 dollars for my initial diagnosis. The additional 600 dollars is for the cat scan and lab test."

Morris had just been hired as the new CEO of a large high-tech corporation. The CEO who was stepping down met with him privately and presented him with three envelopes numbered 1, 2 and 3. "Open these if you run up against a problem you don't think you can solve," the departing CEO said. Things went along pretty smoothly, but six months later, sales took a downturn and Morris was really catching a lot of heat. About at his wit's end, he remembered the envelopes. He went to his drawer and took out the first envelope. The message read, "Blame your predecessor." Morris called a press conference and tactfully laid the blame at the feet of the previous CEO. Satisfied with his comments, the press and Wall Street responded positively, sales began to pick up and the problem was soon behind him. About a year later, the company was again experiencing a slight dip in sales, combined with serious production problems. Having learned from his previous experience, the CEO quickly opened the second envelope. The message read, "Reorganise." This he did, and the company quickly rebounded. After consecutive profitable quarters, the company once again fell on difficult times with a substantial financial loss in the last quarter. Morris went to his office, closed the door and opened the third envelope. The message said, "Prepare three envelopes, numbered 1, 2, and 3 with the messages."

Shirley A woman named Shirley was from Beverly Hills. One day, she had a heart attack and was taken to hospital. While on the operating table, she had a near death experience. She saw God and asked, “Is this it?” God said, “No, you have another 30 to 40 years to live.” After she recovered, she decided to stay in the hospital and pay for collagen shots, cheek implants, a face lift, liposuction, and breast augmentation. She even had someone dye her hair. She figured since she had another 30 to 40 years, she might as well make the most of it. Eventually, she walked out of the hospital entrance and was killed by a speeding ambulance. She arrived in front of the pearly gates and complained to God, “I thought you said I had another 30 to 40 years?” God replied, “Are you Shirley? I’m sorry but I didn’t recognise you!”

Minding Your Business How I learned to mind my own business: I was walking past the mental hospital the other day, and I could hear all the patients shouting, "13! 13! 13!" The fence was too high to see over, but I saw a little gap in the planks, so I looked through to see what was going on. Someone poked me in the eye with a stick! The Hammer A man is in court on trial. The judge says, "On the 3rd August, you are accused of killing your wife by beating her to death with a hammer, how do you plead?" "Guilty", said the man in the dock. Another man at the back of the courtroom stands up and shouts, "You dirty rat!" The judge asks the man to sit down and to refrain from making any noise. The judge then continues, "...and also on the 17th September you are accused of killing your son by beating him to death with a hammer, how do you plead?" "Guilty," says the man in the dock. Again, the same man at the back stands up and shouts even louder, "You dirty rotten stinking rat!" At this point the Judge calls the loud man to the bench and says, "I have already asked you to be quiet. If you continue with these outbursts, I will have to charge you with contempt of court. I can understand your feelings, but what relationship do you have with this man?" He replies, "He is my next-door neighbour." The judge replies, "I can understand your feelings then, but you must refrain from any comments." The man replied "No, your honour, you don't understand. Twice I have asked if I could borrow a hammer, and BOTH TIMES he said he didn't have one!"

Two bored male casino dealers are waiting at the craps table. An extremely attractive, Southern, blonde woman arrives, and bets 20,000 dollars on a single roll of the dice. She says, "I hope you don’t mind, but I feel much luckier when I play topless." With that, she strips to the waist, rolls the dice, and yells, "Come on, Southern girl needs new clothes!" As the dice bounce and come to a stop, she jumps up and down and squeals, "Yes! Yes! I won! I won!" She hugs each of the dealers, picks up her winnings, and her clothes, and walks away. The Prostitute Two men visit a prostitute and the first man goes into her bedroom. He comes out ten minutes later and says, "Heck. My wife is better than that." The second man goes in. He comes out ten minutes later and says, "You’re right! Your wife IS better."

The Performing Duck A circus owner walked into a bar to see everyone crowded around a table watching a little show. On the table was an upside-down pot and a duck tap dancing on it. The circus owner was so impressed that he offered to buy the duck from its owner. After some wheeling and dealing, they settled for 10,000 dollars for the duck and the pot. Three days later the circus owner runs back to the bar in anger, "Your duck is a rip-off! I put him on the pot before a whole audience and he didn't dance a single step!" "Is that so?" replies the duck's former owner, "Did you forget to light the candle under the pot?"
