Nearly Christmas!
Unfortunately, November has been the time for devastating floods in many parts of Spain. In Valencia it has been described as a 1 in 500 years event, but the Mediterranean coast is literally a hot spot. The temperature of the sea is critical, and we are experiencing air temperatures that are close to those normally recorded in the Spring. Nearly four weeks later, in some municipalities, the antiquated sewers are still blocked with mud and debris, and we explain what happened in an article. Andalucía also suffered from these storms, and we comment on this in our “In the News” section.
The Junta de Andalucía intends to make a major investment in beefing up and streamlining the emergency response. Growth predictions in Spain have been upgraded for 2025, but the EU is pointing out that the recovery necessary because of the devastating storms may have a negative effect.
A campaign explaining the importance of the correct disposal of domestic batteries throughout Andalucia in 160 municipalities has a road show entitled in English “A pile of Reasons” which is a play on the Spanish word for these batteries which is “una pila”. It recently came to Mojácar, and information panels were set up in the town hall square. The importance of the recycling of batteries was stressed, with information on where they can be put in the special collection bins.
A new law designed to drastically cut down the time when squatters can be evicted from homes that they have taken over has been passed in the lower Congress parliament (the equivalent of the House of Commons) and it has gone to the Senate for approval. We explain the ramifications in an article.
December is a month when there are various entertainment events for all ages relating to Christmas, and we highlight some of these in our “What’s On” section.
Friday, December 6th is a national fiesta to celebrate the signing of the written Spanish
Constitution in 1978 and town halls, banks and other entities will be shut. Sunday, December 8th is a religious national fiesta, “The Feast of the Immaculate Conception” of the Virgin Mary. As is normal, a fiesta on a Sunday slides over to the Monday.
Sunday, December 22nd is the date every December when the winners of the ‘El Gordo’ (the fat one) lottery are revealed. 70% of the ticket sales of about 2.5 billion euros are returned as prizes. The first prize is 400,000 euros for a single winning ticket that costs 20 euros.
Tuesday, December 24th , ‘Christmas Eve’, is the day when Spanish people living away from their family try to come back for a meal in the evening. Because of this, some restaurants will be shut in the evening but reopen on Christmas Day. A week later, on Tuesday, December 31st a famous clock in Madrid marks midnight with one grape eaten at every stroke with a glass of Cava, Spanish ‘champagne’. Wednesday, January 1st is a national fiesta and so is Monday, January 6th as this is the day of “Los Reyes Magos” (the Three Kings Day) when children in Spain receive their presents. The night before, in many municipalities, and Garrucha is a prime example, the Three Kings tour the streets on decorated floats throwing sweets into the crowd.
As in other years there will be no ‘Focus’ magazine in January, but we return in February. We wish all our readers and advertisers a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. The Spanish greeting at Christmas and the New Year is “¡Felices Fiestas!” Happy Holidays!
In the News
The DANA in Andalucía
In an article we deal with the DANA (extreme storm) in Valencia but there was severe damage throughout Andalucía as well, from two storms on October 29th to November 3rd, and from November 11th to November 15th. The Junta de Andalucía stated that a total of 445 municipalities were affected. The Junta quickly provided aid of more than 80 million euros for the first DANA to help the countryside recover, with 12 million euros for 284 municipalities, the repair of roads, hydraulic infrastructures and educational centres. After the second DANA, 282 municipalities were affected with the total damage still being quantified. The province of Malaga with 1,542 emergency calls to the 112 number has been the most affected province followed by Cádiz with 571 calls, Granada with 372, Seville with 249, Almeria with 217, Huelva with 154, Jaén with 62 and Córdoba with 47. A total of 4,687 people were evacuated with 50% moved to shelters or hotels. Various injuries were reported, and one death indirectly linked to the DANA. A 71-year-old Brit with existing health and mobility problems was rescued from a farm in the Alhaurín de la Torre area of Málaga with hypothermia, but he later had a heart attack and died in hospital. A spokesperson stated that the “ES Alert” system that sends mass messages to the population’s mobile phones, was activated three times during the DANA in Cádiz, Huelva and Málaga and was very effective. (There was one alert in our area that in the main did not apply to our situation). It had been tested in Andalucía, the first time on October 22nd, 2022. Because of the need to strengthen the emergency services, the Junta intends to create ASEMA, the Agency for Security and Emergencies in Andalucía. The 2025 budget will have 270 million euros for the creation of this Agency, which will have around 5,000 personnel, the largest in Spain. Similarly, the PIGEA project (The Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan of Andalucía) has a budget of 17 million euros to modernise emergency management through the use of artificial intelligence, the intensive use of new technologies, as well as the digitisation of all warning systems to the population.
Help in Valencia
In the municipality of Adsuara, badly affected by the floods in Valencia, Mercadona was one of the few commercial premises not affected. They advised the mayor on October 31st that they were in a position to open. He replied that in the next few days they were to keep details of all their sales that would be paid for by the municipality as it was totally unfair that residents had to pay when many of them had nothing. After some discussion, this was agreed. The La Fila public school in nearby Alfafar, which was not badly flooded, suddenly became the logistical heart. The primary classes on the upper floor were converted into dormitories and the school kitchen was transformed into a field kitchen capable of serving 3,000 plates of food a day to residents and rescue workers. One teachers’ room became a drugstore and medical supply dispenser until a farmacia was able to open on November 13th. The corridors and the courtyard became a warehouse full of material of all kinds including water and clothes brought there by various organisations. The school’s principal, Luisa Oliver, became the full-time manager of the makeshift supply centre and temporary shelter but there was no electricity until November 4th. Juan Roig, the owner of Mercadona, announced that they were setting aside 40 million euros to help employees who had lost homes or cars, or both. Withing a few days, 50,000 euros was paid into the bank accounts of employees whose homes were totally wrecked. A spokesperson for the company stated, “We want to help our employees who in some cases have lost everything and have to start all over again.” The city authorities have a solidarity bank account to receive donations from individuals, companies, and entities. Money received will be used to help the victims and towards repairing the damage. The account number is: ES94 0081 0693 61 0002423445.
Damage in El Ejido
In general, Almería province was not badly affected by the recent storms, but on the night of October 28th, a violent storm with very large hail stones, rain and strong wind hit the municipality of El
In the
Ejido, causing catastrophic damage. In figures, the mayor states that “More than 7,000 calls have been received, with damage to some 2,000 homes and more than 5,000 vehicles for an estimated amount of more than 26 million euros, to which we add almost 7 million euros for damage to public spaces and facilities, such as pavilions, schools, solar panels, traffic lights, road signs and roads.” The hail stones, which were the size golf balls, damaged car bodywork and punched holes in windscreens and rear windows. Local windscreen replacement companies soon ran out of windscreens and asked companies in Almería city and Roquetas de Mar to send their stocks to El Ejido along with mobile windscreen replacement vehicles. The greatest damage occurred in the agricultural sector with more than 5,000 hectares (19 square miles) of crops affected. The financial implication is put at more than 158 million euros in both crop losses and direct damage that flattened huge areas of plastic and polycarbonate greenhouses. These figures place the municipality as one of the most seriously affected in Andalucía. On November 5th , a Royal Decree was published that gives government aid to named catastrophic zones severely damaged by the storms. El Ejido was not included and the mayor, Francisco Góngora, demanded that the exclusion of El Ejido was reconsidered, as well as aid and money from any other measures agreed by the Council of Ministers. Within a few days it was announced that places where they had been “gravely affected” would have the cost of the damage paid by central government and El Ejido was on this list. The mayor of Serón has also appealed for government aid as he considers that the municipality cannot cover the cost of the storm damage.
Trump and Imports from Andalucía
Donald Trump is threatening a trade war in which he proposes taxes of 10%-60% on all imported products. His victory potentially puts at risk 3.2 billion euros a year in exports from Andalucía of refined oil, table olive oil, olives, construction and aeronautical goods, and Jaén is the main producer of olive oil in Spain. The regional secretary of the
Union of Small Farmers in Andalucía, Cristóbal Cano, defines this situation as a “real threat” because, “We have surpassed Italy and we have the largest market share in the US that is the largest importer after the EU.” According to data from Andalucía Trade, sales of olive oil to the US from Andalucía reached 329 million with a growth of 48% during the first half of 2024. Manuel Parras is the President of the PGI ‘Aceite de Jaén’ association and Professor of Marketing and Market Research at the University of Jaén. He stresses that the future “is not very promising” and stresses that “protectionism is, fundamentally, a detriment to consumers who are going to have to pay more for the products they want.” He also asserts that this type of measure makes “much less sense” in countries such as the US since “it produces very little olive oil itself, but was a consumer in 2023 of 400 million litres.” The agri-food industry still has the recent memory of the additional tariffs that the Trump Administration began to apply in 2018 of nearly 7 billion euros on 113 Spanish products including a 30% tax on olive oil and olives. This was a dispute with the EU over subsidies to the aeronautical giant Airbus, assembled in Seville, to protect Boeing. Apart from Airbus itself, other aeronautical companies supply components to the US. Although the tariffs were suspended in 2021 for five years, their definitive elimination is still pending. Another export to the US is refined crude oil that comes from Cepsa in Andalucía. At the national level, and with less repercussion in Andalucía, Trump’s victory opens a stage of uncertainty in the trade relationship between Europe and the US for the wine sector. The US is in fourth place of countries that spend the most money to buy wine, with 3.4 billion euros in 2023, according to the Spanish Wine Market Organisation.
At Risk of Flooding
The Mediterranean Ecology Organisation has cross referenced areas in Almería province officially declared to be at risk of flooding with details from the property registry. They conclude that 25,000 are in the flood areas, and another 15,000 are not on the property register because they
In the News
are officially illegal, such as properties in rural areas where buildings are not allowed. This is apart from very large agricultural areas that are at risk of flooding. They point out that flooding is not at all unusual, such as the major floods in Puerto Rey and Pueblo Laguna in 2012 (the third time), and the heaviest rainfall recorded in the province of 800 litres per m2 in 24hrs at Zurgena in 1973. They point out that the list of flood zones established by the National System of Flood Zones for Almeria province is very extensive and covers many areas, both inland and coastal, including Pulpí, San Juan de Los Terreros, Palomares, Vera, Valle del Este, Puerto Rey, Pueblo Laguna and Mojácar. The ecologists state that in Vera and Vera play there are 3,600 properties in the official flood areas at danger from the Río Antas.
Self Employed Numbers
Out of a total of 298,826 workers in the province, 60,264 identify themselves as selfemployed, representing approximately 20.2% of the active population. Among the municipalities that stand out for their entrepreneurial activity, Mojácar is in a privileged position. With an active population of 2,111 workers, 791 of them are self-employed, which represents a notable 37.4%. The tourism industry, which attracts numerous visitors during the summer, has allowed many residents to start their own businesses, especially in hospitality and related services.
80 Years of Endesa
Since its foundation in 1944, Endesa, the electricity supply company, has followed a path of transformation and growth that positions it today as one of the leading energy companies in Spain. Andalucía has been a fundamental pillar in their growth and plays a leading role in the energy transition and decarbonisation sectors. At a press meeting, José Bogas their CEO, announced, “Endesa has been and continues to be a company aimed at serving our society. Since our origin in Ponferrada eight decades ago, we have built a company that has the trust of more than 12 million customers with 9,000
employees.” He continued, “The integration of the Sevillana de Electricidad company into Endesa at the end of the 90s consolidated the company’s presence in Andalucía. The Carboneras ‘Litoral’ power station was opened in 1985 in the middle of the oil crisis, with the aim of using imported coal to produce energy, and it has only recently been taken out of service.” The company’s major shareholder since 2009 is the Italian Enel group.
El Algarrobico Hotel
Finally, Carboneras council have issued an amended PGOU (town planning document) stating that the area of El Algarrobico, on which the 21-storey Azata del Sol hotel is located, is non-developable non-urban land with special protection, along with the El Canillar sector. One of the most recent reasons as to why they could not do this (or didn’t want to) was because they had no municipal secretary. The Andalucía High Court in Seville wrote to the council on July 23rd and October 4th stating that the lack of a municipal secretary was not an obstacle to passing legislation of a technical planning nature. Greenpeace have consistently been asking that the council and mayor are given a daily fine for “non-compliance” with legal requests. The next step in the saga that started in 2003 when Carboneras council approved the building of the hotel and issued a licence, is a demolition order. Once this is done, there is some prospect that the hotel will be demolished. The Junta de Andalucía still do not own the land where the hotel has been built which is a prior pre-condition. The council have always been worried that the

developer, who has had the almost-finished hotel valued at 70 million euros, will take them to court now the original building licence is no longer valid.
Cosentino News
The Executive Vice-president of Cosentino, Álvaro de la Haza, has ruled out the company’s IPO (stock exchange listing) “in the short and medium term”, so the company will remain 100% owned by the family members. He stated that they have too much workload to focus on other things. As regards Donald Trump and his threatened tariff hike, Álvaro de la Haza considers that, “We are a very Spanish company and we are also a very American company and it will be the second time we have lived with the Trump administration, so we have a ‘certain confidence’. The US manufacturing plant should not be affected and the US is one of our main customers.” As regards the company in general he explained, “We are not going to have great growth in 2024, it will be a year very similar to 2023, but we still managed to contain the turnover thanks to diversification.” He stressed that the company has “great accumulated growth in recent years following the Covid-19 pandemic”. He explained that their latest advances and milestones in terms of innovation and R&D was the “Circular Technological Quarry” (CT Quarry), a project that is “the biggest leap for the sector globally in more than a decade”. With an estimated total investment of 90 million euros, “Cantera Tecnológica” has been one of the 16 medium-scale projects, and the only one in Spain, selected in the latest announcement for funding from the European Commission’s Innovation Fund. The Innovation Fund is one of the largest financing programmes in the world for the implementation of innovative net-zero and lowcarbon emission technologies, being one of the key tools of the European Green Deal Industrial Plan. Their 2024-2026 Investment Plan is currently being executed, which amounts to a total of about 400 million euros. Cosentino has an extensive intellectual property portfolio that includes 30 families of patents in force that protect different inventions in the various countries where it operates, in addition to 88 different registered designs.
Trump and Palomares
With Donald Trump back in the White House, there are fears that this may scupper the removal of the Palomares radioactive soil that affects 40 hectares. There was nil interest nor progress during his first term. The Palomares problem, caused by the accident between a B-52 bomber and a tanker plane that released four nuclear bombs in 1966, has been a pending issue in diplomatic relations between Spain and the United States. Under Biden, a 2015 agreement signed between John Kerry and the then- Spanish Foreign, Minister José GarcíaMargallo, to move contaminated soil to the US was revived. In May 2023, Biden and Pedro Sánchez made “technical progress”, giving new hope to residents affected by the plutonium that it would be removed. The 600 million dollar estimated cost in removing the soil and transporting it to the US, combined with bureaucratic and technical requirements, represents an obstacle that the Trump administration may not be willing to take on.
Squatters in Spain
At present, it is quite difficult and slow to get squatters (Los Okupas) out of a property, and a period of 6 months or longer for 80% of them, is not uncommon. A new law passed in the lower Congress of Deputies parliament makes “usurpation of a dwelling” illegal under article 245 of the Penal Code, and “trespassing” under article 202. The aim is that in a maximum of 15 days after a complaint to a court, squatters can be tried, and if convicted this is followed by eviction. The law now goes to the upper house Senate for approval that can be “rubber stamped”, approved by a majority or sent back for amendments. Once approved in the Senate, within 15 days it receives royal assent, is published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) and becomes law. If there are minors in the property, the Social Services get involved if they are deemed to be at risk and the eviction may be postponed until alternative housing is found. Spain is behind other countries in Europe, and in France, the landlord can notify the police that their home has been usurped by squatters, and they are authorised to evict the usurpers immediately,

without the need for a judge’s permission. The process lasts around 48 hours and is punishable by a maximum of three years in prison and a fine of up to 45,000 euros. In Germany, eviction takes place within 24 hours and occupation has penalties of up to one year in prison or two if violence is used. In the United Kingdom, the police can enter the home if they have suspicions or a complaint that it has been occupied by squatters and do not require judicial authorisation. It is punishable by maximum sentences of 51 weeks in prison and fines of up to the equivalent of 5,700 euros. If the squatters leave the house within 24 hours of them moving in, they are not punished.
New Flights to Almería
EasyJet have announced that from June to October next year they will have flights from Luton to Almería on Wednesdays and Sundays with a total of 14,000 seats. These are in addition to their flights from Gatwick and Southend.
“Adios” For Rafa
In Málaga, when the Davis Cup Spanish doubles match resulted in a defeat on Tuesday, November 19th, Rafa Nadal said goodbye to competitive tennis. He, his coaches, and his family were very emotional when the Spanish National Anthem was played as a tribute to his 20-year career. Rafa stated that injury had plagued him in recent years and he was not at his best. He was partnered by the rising tennis player Carlos Alcaraz from Murcia who is considered to be “a young Rafa” and is currently number three in the world rankings. Rafa will continue to work with his tennis Foundation and Academy schemes to promote young players.
The Richest Men and Women In Spain
The ‘Forbes’ magazine in the US regularly calculates and publishes details of the richest men and women. Amancio Ortega, founder of Inditex, the multinational clothes company, heads the Spanish list in 2024 for the tenth consecutive year, with a net worth of more than 120.2 billion euros. Sandra Orega, his daughter, is the richest woman in Spain thanks to her worth of 10.4 billion euros.
Manuel Lao, founder of Cirsa, a multinational dedicated to the gaming and leisure sector, leads the list as the richest man in Andalucía among the 100 Spaniards with the most wealth. Lao is not the only man from Almería who appears on this list as Eduardo and Francisco Cosentino, from the world-famous company Cosentino, based in Cantoria, are on the list as well. Juan Roig, the main owner of Mercadona, is in fourth place with almost 6 billion euros of assets. María del Pino Calvo-Sotelo is the second richest woman in the country with an approximate wealth of 3.2 billion euros. She is the daughter Rafael del Pino, founder of the enormous construction company Ferrovial.
A Roquetas de Mar Home Zoo
After a man went to the Poniente hospital in El Ejido because he had been bitten by a snake, specialist police officers from the Seprona branch, who are responsible for flora and fauna amongst other tasks, went to the man’s apartment where he lived with another man. They found various animals including a water monitor lizard, a pink tarantula, and a California king snake. Two specimens that are protected species were also found; an albino python and a boa constrictor that lacked microchips or documentations and are banned from being kept, bought or sold. Three potentially dangerous dogs were found that had no water or food and were in an environment with serious hygienic-sanitary deficiencies, in addition to lacking mandatory vaccinations. The man was treated and sent home without any antidote being needed, but the two men were charged with crimes against flora and fauna, a lack of any security for the animals, animal abuse, lack of documentation and no required vaccinations for the dogs. All the exotic species were confiscated and will be transferred to specialist centres.
Water For Pulpí
One cubic hectometre (1hm3) of desalinated water will be sent to Pulpí from the desalination plant in Aguilas. This has been announced by the Almería diputación (county council) at a cost of 2 million euros. A spokesperson has stated,
In the News
“The importance of this action is that we are going to free up water resources from the Carboneras desalination plant that has previously been used in Pulpí, so that they can be used for other municipalities and the development of the province”. A connecting pipeline will be constructed with a total length of 6,885m, buried in a trench.
Electric Scooter Accidents in Almería City
The Local Police in Almería city have revealed that in the 12 months up to this November, there have been 72 accidents with electric scooters, and 60 of them were collisions with other vehicles. The remainder were collisions with pedestrians or buildings. The DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) have published new regulations that will be in force shortly, including the compulsory use of approved helmets, insurance, reflective jackets and reflective panels on the scooters. The Local Police in Almería city go to schools to explain the regulations and also the highway code, that many younger people are not familiar with.
Crypto Currency Fraud
In conjunction with fraud police in Holland, Spanish National Police recently arrested a Dutchman aged 24 in Marbella. He and his family had set up a site where he invited people to transfer crypto currency to an account of his, that he then changed into dollars or euros. He started with small amount of money to gain their confidence that he was genuine. Amongst his “clients” were crime bosses who were trying to launder money. He pocketed large amounts of crypto currency transferred to him and moved frequently between luxury villas in Marbella that he rented for just a few weeks to avoid detection. Police in Holland had told the Spanish police that they thought the main fraudster was in Marbella and they set up an investigation. Along with family members he had amassed 20 million dollars. The fraudster owned an apartment, and a police raid found high value watches, jewellery, luxury items, 16,000 euros in cash, mobile phones, and computer hard drives. In a similar raid in Holland police found 238,000 euros in a safe, watches
worth 600,000 euros, jewellery, and high value clothes from leading luxury manufacturers. The value of these items was put at 500,000 euros. Large amounts of money in a variety of accounts throughout Europe were frozen and will be seized. The Dutchman was deported to Holland where there were “find and capture” and extradition warrants in place. The investigations in both countries and the help of Europol were funded by EU money from an Internal Security Fund that helps European police stop major fraud in complicated and expensive investigations.
‘Infoca’ Fire Fighting
The organisation ‘Infoca’ are responsible for work to minimise forest fires and other fires and dealing with them when they occur. The 2024 “high season” went from June 15th to October 15th and they extinguished fires that covered 2,795 hectares (just under 11 square miles) in the province. They dealt with 12 major fires and 48 small ones. The two most serious ones that consumed over 500 hectares were the 639 hectares in Enix and 1,132 hectares in Níjar, which was the largest fire in Andalucía, caused by lightning during an electrical storm. These two major fires meant that the total area was eight times that of 2023. Infoca use as a danger yardstick the 30 30 30 rule; winds more than 30km/h, temperatures of 30 degrees or over, and humidity less than 30%. The Níjar fire took place with winds of 50km/h, 30 degrees and a humidity of 28%. Fire crews using 200 vehicles and 12 aircraft managed to extinguish the fire eventually. Their report reveals that 62% of all fires were caused by negligence, 7.8% were accidental, the origin of 13% could not be
In the News
established, and 10% were arson. Infoca operate out of a main control centre and three forest centres that are in Alhama de Almería, Serón and Vélez Blanco, with an aircraft runway at Gergal, and they have 10 monitoring stations throughout the province. At the height of the summer alert period, they employed 445 people with a budget of 3 million euros. Many operatives work in the winter and spring to clear vegetation and clean firebreaks apart from working during the summer. The Andalucía delegate in Almería for Security and Emergencies, Martín Moya, is suggesting that they should operate over the entire year for those workers that want to do this. He considers that in addition, they could help with other emergencies such as flooding, earthquakes and searching for people who go missing in the countryside. A number of employees have already had their contracts extended to the end of the year. In the June to October period 721 calls were made to the 112-emergency number, compared to 973 in 2023. Martín Moya saw this reduction as a sign that people were being more careful. In early 2025 Andalucía has a commitment to purchase new land vehicles, particularly helicopters, at a cost of 62 million euros. New radios have allowed Infoca and all the emergency services to be in contact on one shared frequency that has cost 27 million euros, described as one of the most modern and comprehensive facilities for emergency services in Europe. On November 20th Infoca were called out to deal with a fire at the Legionnaire base in Viator. An army spokesperson stated that the fire had been caused by a mortar shell fired in a live drill. High winds of 25-40kms/h slowed down the extinguishing of the fire that was dealt with on the ground and by two Infoca airplanes.
Non-Spanish Residents
An analysis of the Land Registry details in our province reveals that between the months of July and September 2024, 19.97% of the homes that were sold were acquired by foreigners led by British, German, and Scandinavian nationals. This is higher than the national average that is 14.45%, but five autonomous communities have a high percentage
of foreign buyers: the Balearic Islands (32.50%), the Valencian Community (28.45%), the Canary Islands (27.25%), Murcia (24.68%), and Catalonia (16.79%). The five nationalities that accumulated the most sales in Spain in the third quarter were British (8.52%), Germans (6.43%), Moroccans (5.46%), Poles (5.32%) and Italians (5.25%). Above 5% of the market were the French (5.23%), Romanians (5.13%) and the Dutch (5.03%). Converted to numbers, the highest quarterly figures are British citizens (2,077), Germans (1,568), Moroccans (1,331), Poles (1,296), Italians (1,279), French (1,274), Romanians (1,250) and Dutch (1,226).
The 13 tonnes of Cocaine
Last month we commented on the largest cocaine seizure in Spain when 13 tonnes of cocaine were discovered in a container at Algeciras port on October 14th. It was the largest amount discovered in Spain and the second largest in Europe, in a single container with a street value of 780 million euros. Police became suspicious when they noted that the company that had sent it from Ecuador was linked to the illicit supply of drugs, and the fruit merchant where it was being sent in Alicante had been suspected of drug smuggling before. An x-ray of the container revealed hidden compartments amongst the load of bananas. In November, specialist police raided the home of the head of the Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit who is in charge of crimes related to money laundering. There had been a covert operation since last January investigating whether this police chief was linked to drug smuggling, and the cocaine seizure accelerated his arrest. Police sources confirmed that he had 15 million euros in notes hidden in different locations, with most of the money hidden behind a wall of his house in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. They also discovered one million euros hidden in his official office. He was charged with crimes of drug trafficking, bribery, money laundering, belonging to a criminal organisation, and omission of the duty to prosecute crimes. His wife was also arrested. During the operation, another senior policeman in the same anti-money laundering unit
In the News
was arrested and two members of the National Police. A police spokesperson stated, “This type of operation aims to preserve the integrity of the police and demonstrates that illegal actions, regardless of the rank or position of the official, will be investigated and punished according to the law.” In all, 15 people were arrested and remanded in custody by a special court, and apart from the police involved, they were all charged with drug trafficking and money laundering.
Living on Boats
In Las Palmas, the price of housing has pushed large numbers of people to live on boats moored in the marina despite the fact that local regulations don’t allow this. Las Palmas Marina, known in the city as simply “the marina”, is the largest recreational dock in the Canary Islands, with nearly 1,400 berths. It has also become very popular with nightclubs and restaurants. One pensioner, a retired freelance journalist, explained to the ‘El País’ newspaper that for nine years he lived in an apartment belonging to one of his daughters, but when she wanted to sell it, his pension of 500 euros per month made it impossible for him to rent a property. He made an agreement with his daughter that if he managed to sell the apartment for more than her asking price, he would keep the difference. This ended up as being 20,0000 euros that he spent buying a 9-metre boat moored in the marina. The population of the Canary Islands is now 2.2 million and immigration, mostly from other parts of Spain or countries such as Italy (the largest expat population, with 49,987 people) or the United Kingdom (29,631) is the main cause of population growth. Between January and September 2024, rental prices have risen by almost 9% in the Canary Islands, the fourth most expensive region of Spain, after the Balearic Islands, Madrid, and Catalonia. In San Bartolomé de Tirajana, the main tourist town in the Canary Islands, the average holiday rental price for an apartment is 2,250 euros per month. The pensioner explained that with mooring fees (the cheapest in Spain), electricity and water it costs less than 150 euros per month. Boat owners can also use the facilities on the dock,
which include a shower with hot water, toilets and wash basins. The authorities, that strictly speaking ban living on a boat, can’t evict you if you’ve been there for more than six months and are considered to have your registered home base in the port. There were 259 people registered as living in the marina prior to 2019, when the Port Authority published the ordinance that prohibited living on a boat. It is considered that this number has gone down somewhat, but the exact current numbers are not known. Some people working in the hotel or restaurant industry during the high season are renting caravans because they cannot afford to rent a property, and this is a feature of Ibiza as well. Companies such as Airbnb are prohibited from renting boats to tourists in the marina, which was outlawed in 2020.
Less CO2 Emissions
The United Nations have published a report dealing with the reductions in CO2 emissions and Europe is the only area where there has been a substantial reduction. They went down 7.3% during 2022 and 2023, and the drop in the US was only 1.2%. Emissions in India, China and Russia went up by 6.1%, 5% and 2% respectively. The UN are calling for far more action and less claims that reductions are taking place and requesting “No more Hot Air!” Experts calculate that emissions have to go down by 7% every year up to 2035 to achieve the 1.5% limit agreed in Paris in 2015.
Pensions in 2025
For people in Spain receiving full or partial retirement pensions the key date is December 13th. This is when the INE (Institute of Statistics) publish the inflation figure from November based on the Consumer Price Index. This is the benchmark and pensions from January 1st next year will go up by this amount. Apart from pensioners, the November inflation rate will determine how much the Social Security Department has to allow for pensions next year. The number of people paying into Social Security through legal employment has been going up steadily, and in the third quarter this year had risen to 21.82 million people, 376,000

more over the last 12 months and a record number. Unemployed persons dropped by 222,000 to the lowest number since 2008, and although this is 11.27% it was 13.4% in the first quarter of 2023. A rise in employment and a drop in the unemployed gives the Social Security Department more money.
Dreambeach 2025
The 11th Dreambeach 2025 music festival is on the same site in El Toyo at Retamar and takes place on August 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. At the end of October, it was announced that their headline performer from the US will be Will Smith. Their website advertised that the lineup of artists of the 11th edition would present many surprises of international stature, betting on both big names in the electronic circuit who have passed through Dreambeach throughout this decade, as well as new reference or urban artists, and will also give a relevant space to the national and local scene. Tickets went on sale from November 3rd at www.dreambeach.es.
Almería Airport Charges
‘AENA’ the Spanish airport authority have announced incentive schemes that apply to Almería airport in a bid to get passenger numbers up to over the 2019 ones. On winter and summer flights in 2025 and 2026, airlines who bring more passengers than in 2023 on a particular route will not have to pay additional passenger fees.
This means that for each additional person the airline might save five euros. The reductions apply to all airports who have less than 3 million passengers. Additionally, the amount charged for airport security will also be scrapped when there are more passengers than in 2023 along with the ‘passengers with reduced mobility’ charge.
Electric Car Public Charging
The electricity company Endesa intend to instal double the number of public charging points for all-electric vehicles in Andalucía within the next 12 months, going up to 2,000 in 460 locations. The fleet of electric vehicles in Spain exceeded 466,000 at the end of 2023 when there were 125,000 new registrations, more than 25% of the total. Despite this acceleration in 2023, the current take-off of electric mobility in Spain is considerably slower than expected and is far from the target of the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), which aims to reach 3.5 million vehicles by 2030. The 13% penetration in Spain is much lower than the 22% in Portugal. Manuel Muñoz, head of marketing and commercialisation of Electric Mobility at Endesa presented these figures at a conference in Jérez. He explained that Endesa and other companies need decisive support from the public administrations (central, regional, provincial and municipal), which are slowing down progress with too much red tape. A common complaint from car owners is charging points that are not in use. According to Muñoz, the problem lies in the fact that many of the charging points installed are not connected to the grid due to delays in processing. This causes not only frustration among users, but also losses for investors and operators, who must cover the costs without generating revenue. He criticised the Moves III subsidy scheme for electric and hybrid cars as being over complicated for buyers as the subsidies take a very long time to arrive, and when they do, are subject to income tax. He states that this does not happen in other countries, where in addition to being more accessible, they are applied directly at the time of a purchase, taken off the purchase price, and fully tax deductible.
Ryanair
Thelow-cost airline Ryanair complained bitterly on October 28th when flights into Palma de Mallorca were prevented from landing due to weather conditions. Ryanair stated that passengers could board aircraft and fly out, and in their opinion, there were no weather issues. Ryanair’s Chief Ops Officer, Neal McMahon said, “This is the latest example of terrible Air Traffic Control performance this summer, which has caused repeated and unnecessary disruption to passengers. Ryanair once again calls on Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to reform the shambolic ATC services.”
Spanish authorities hit back calling the criticism “unacceptable” and defended the decision as being based purely on “public safety reasons.” They explained that high gusty winds could severely affect planes landing and in the worstcase scenario, blow them off the runway. Outgoing flights were not affected because they took off at full power. Easyjet issued a statement, “The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is our highest priority. We are sorry for any difficulty or inconvenience caused to our passengers.”
Ryanair are often involved in controversy, but they are streets in front of other low-cost airlines. Fixed costs are under the control of any airline, but the major variable is the cost of fuel. The stock market valuation of Ryanair has risen by 138% since 2014 compared to losses of 17% by AIG (that includes Iberia), 23% by Lufthansa, 60% by EasyJet and a whopping 72% by Air France-KLM. Ryanair also benefit from having no debt.
One of the keys to Ryanair’s success is their sheer volume and they fly to 37 countries with 95 bases. In early November they had achieved 3,402 average daily flights compared to 1,749 from EasyJet, 1,250 from Lufthansa, 1,042 from Air France and 623 from Vueling. In 2012 they carried 76 million passengers which has now gone up to 184 million, and with a projected growth of 9% next year they will nearly surpass 200 million. They had 294 planes in 2012 that has now risen to
584, and their 10-year plan is to buy Boeing Max10 aircraft and have 800 aircraft by 2034. The new aircraft will have a capacity to carry 20% more passengers with fuel cost savings of 20%.
Cost figures per passenger are stated to be 34 euros excluding fuel, compared to 45 euros for Wizz Air, 79 euros for EasyJet, 164 euros for Lufthansa, 222 euros for Air France-KLM and 159 euros for Iberia. They slash costs with staff wages that they keep very low, despite strikes, and an aggressive policy to cut or abolish airport fees. They recently told Spain that if airport taxes were not reduced there were other countries that would welcome them, but they are not going to ignore the very lucrative Spanish market.
Analysts state that in the last few years, excluding the years of pandemic losses in fiscal years 2021 and 2022, Ryanair has earned an average of nine euros for each passenger it has taken on its flights. For the next few years, the figure of 10 euros is very much within reach as long as there are no major problems with the high cost of fuel. If not, in 2034 with 300 million passengers the company could earn more than three billion euros in net profit, compared to the 1.5 billion estimated for this year.
Positive net cash, a competitive cost structure, capturing niche markets in various countries, and a good management team, are the keys to the exceptional stock market performance of a company that operates in a business that can be very tough.
So Now You Know...
Father Christmas
Santa hasn’t always been dressed in red. Pre 1930s there were many different variations of Santa, sporting a variety of different coloured garments. The idea that the modern-day image of Santa Claus was created by Coca-Cola is not strictly true. The original red-suited Santa became popular in the US and Canada in the 19th century due to the influence of the cartoonist Thomas Nast. In the ‘Harpers Weekly’ magazine in 1863 he depicted a red Santa giving presents to Union soldiers engaged in the war with the message “Happy Christmas”. In 1931 Coca-Cola commissioned their own trademarked depiction of Santa from Thomas Nash.
The Royal Christmas Broadcast
The Queen Elizabeth II 1957 Christmas Day Broadcast was a historic event, as it was the first to be televised. The broadcast was made live from the Long Library at Sandringham, Norfolk and altogether the Queen made 64 Christmas speeches. It was also the 25th anniversary of the first Christmas Broadcast on the radio by King George V in 1932. The chosen time of 3pm was so that people in the British Empire could hear it, and it attracted over 20 million listeners. King Charles III’s speech, made from St George’s Chapel in Windsor, attracted an audience of 10.6 million, making it the most viewed TV programme of the day.
The Christmas Cracker
The Christmas cracker was invented by a London sweet shop owner called Tom Smith. In 1847 he came across French sweets that were wrapped in colourful paper with a twist at each end to undo them. He sold similar sweets with a “love motto” inside. Thinking about Christmas in 1885, he introduced tubes with a twisted end, the same as the Christmas cracker we have now. He included a little trinket and the strip that made a bang if you held it properly. He progressed to marketing Christmas “Bangs of Expectation” included gifts such as a small item of jewellery and miniature dolls. By 1900, he was selling 13 million a year.
Christmas Jumpers
According to Matalan, 62% of customers surveyed own a Christmas jumper, with people aged 25-34 the most likely to buy one. Over 75% buy their jumpers to wear for work parties and 50% on Christmas Day. The festive jumper became popular in the UK, worn by crooners Val Doonican and Andy Williams on their Christmas TV specials. It rose in popularity again during the 1980s, and then in North America in the early 2000s when the ‘uglyChristmas-sweater party’ took off, with guests competing to wear the most hideous garment. In the UK in 2001, Mark Darcy in ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ wore a very colourful Christmas jumper.
Mince Pies
In 1390 in an English cookbook ‘A Forme of Cury’ cooks were instructed to grind up pork, hard-boiled eggs, and cheese, before mixing them with spices, saffron, and sugar. By the mid-17th Century, there appears to have been some connection made to Christmas, although people certainly ate mince pies at other times as well – Samuel Pepys had mince pies at a friend’s anniversary party in 1661. Perhaps a more important change in mince pies has been the transition to a sweeter one, which it appears was already underway by the time Hannah Glasse wrote her ‘Art of Cookery’ in 1747. She described a sweet tart with no meat.
A White Christmas
For a Christmas to be officially classified as “white” a single snowflake needed to be observed falling in the 24 hours of December 25th on the rooftop of the Met Office Headquarters in London. However, with the increase in betting on where will be a white Christmas, the number of locations has increased to sites such as Buckingham Palace, Belfast (Aldergrove Airport), Aberdeen (Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen FC), Edinburgh (Castle), Coronation Street in Manchester and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Technically, 2022 was the last white Christmas in the UK with 9% of stations recording snow falling, but none lying on the ground.
The Devastating Floods
Severe storms in Spain are often attributed to a DANA, “Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos,” an isolated depression at high altitudes, a feature of the Mediterranean coastal areas and in Spain during October. When cold air descends over the warm waters of the sea this results in atmospheric instability, causing hotter, moist air on the surface of the sea to rise quickly, leading to the formation of dense, towering cumulous clouds in a matter of hours that then dump heavy rain. Off the coast of Valencia, sea temperatures were two degrees higher than normal and air temperatures were high as well.
Aemet is the National Meteorological Department and they have three levels of danger; yellow (caution), orange (alert) and red (emergency) where there is an extreme danger to life, possessions and infrastructure. They started giving storm warning in the Valencia region on October 24th and their first red alert was sent out at 7.30am on Tuesday, October 29th. Autonomous communities, in this case Valencia, have to decide what action to take through their Integrated Operational Coordination Centre (Cecopi), but their response was very slow. There was not a full meeting until 5pm and the President of Valencia, Carles Mazón, did not arrive until 7.10pm after a threehour lunch with a journalist from 3pm to 6pm.
The ES-Alert system to mobile phones is put out by the 112-emergency department in Spanish and English warning of situations that the public need to take into account, authorised and worded by the Coordination Centre. This was not sent out until 8.11pm and an instruction that people should go to the first floors of buildings was watered down “to prevent panic”. It only specified that people should not travel in the area. This was a bad mistake as by then thousands of people had their homes wrecked, and many had died.
The National Authority that deals with rivers and dams have an Automated Hydrological Information System that measures rainfall and has sensors in rivers and dams. They started to
get extremely worried during the afternoon and at 5.25pm, the water flow sensor in the Rambla del Poyo normally dry riverbed, detected a breach of the safety threshold set at 150 cubic meters per second (m³/s), and a warning email was sent to the authorities. At 6.40pm the flow was 1,686 m³/s, and a second email warned “the flood is very fast”. 20 minutes later, the measuring station was destroyed by the water after a reading of 2,282 m³/s. At the large Forata reservoir the capacity was 17% at 1pm but 65% at 4pm. The technicians feared that there could be a catastrophic break in the dam if it continued to fill up at that speed so they notified the authorities, particularly the Civil Defence Headquarters, that they were releasing water from the reservoir to halt the 78% rising level, affecting people living downstream. Later, an expert concluded that if the dam had given way Valencia city would have been severely flooded.
The UME is a unique branch of the Spanish military trained to respond to all emergencies with equipment, vehicles and helicopters, and the Valencia unit is very close to the city. Monitoring the situation, they informed the authorities at 2pm that troops were ready to be dispatched. At 3.40pm their Commanding Officer, having received no instructions, authorised 100 troops to start rescue work on his own initiative. When the severity of the situation was reported back, he sent another 200 soldiers. In all, the UME, Guardia Civil police and the fire service rescued 36,600 people.
Over an area of 530 km2 (204 square miles), 78 municipalities were affected with a population of 400,000. Aemet weather stations recorded between 150 and 200 litres per square metre (150200 l/m2, 15-20cms deep) in several areas over a two-hour period. At the Turís weather station the rainfall went from zero to 42 l/m2 in 15 minutes, 102.8 l/m2 after thirty minutes and 184.6 l/m2 after 60 minutes, the highest recorded rainfall in Spain. Over 24hrs the total was 771.8 l/m2. In a few areas there was no rainfall but the flood water reached levels of up to 3m.
The Ministry of Defence told Carles Mazón that troops and equipment would be drafted in, but he only asked for 500. Criticised the following day, the number requested went up to 1,000 then 2,000 the next day. Finally, after one week there were 6,700 military there and this was then stepped up to 7,800. The Legionnaire base at Viator sent three teams and equipment to the area over a period of a few days. 1,700 Firemen were sent there from 42 locations, with 6,000 Guardia Civil police. Heavy equipment was badly needed and these came from all over Spain. On Saturday, November 2nd , 15,600 mostly young people, with brooms and shovels, met at the Science Museum to help with the clean-up. 9,000 were taken to the most effected area in a fleet of 50 coaches, and others set off on foot.
The Copernicus satellite system uses very highresolution imagery to calculate the damage caused by disasters such as this one, and it can be tasked to concentrate on a very small area. This revealed the destruction of 1,500 kms of roads, 99 kms of railways, and the two AVE (high speed trains) to Barcelona and Madrid were out of action with severe track damage.
When a person in Spain takes out an insurance policy, a small amount of money goes to the Insurance Compensation Consortium that cover the situation when normal insurance companies decline to pay out for “Acts of God”. At the start of 2024 they had a reserve of 10.3 billion
euros available. 99,000 vehicles (19% of all vehicles registered) were damaged and 80% were considered to be write-offs with an estimated cost of 1.9 billion euros. Over 50,000 houses or apartments were severely damaged, 4,500 businesses and 1,800 retail premises. 34,000 commercial premises will probably be able to open again and the total workforce affected in the service industry is 217,000. The consortium uses insurance assessors from other insurance companies and 400 were sent there. This was still not enough and the consortium accepted photos of wrecked vehicles as proof of damage. After 8 days, 43,608 claims corresponded to homes, 83,437 to vehicles and 8,137 to shops and warehouses. Insurance companies processed claims from their own clients that they normally don’t handle to speed things up, and the total bill for these alone probably amounts to 3.5 billion euros. This is apart from losses in income for businesses and agricultural land destroyed. The severely flooded huge Riba-Roja industrial estate had 20,000 workers spread over 1,400 companies. The consortium started paying out money from claims on November 6th.
Unfortunately, 222 people in the Valencia region died (229 throughout Spain) and bodies were identified from fingerprints, DNA, medical records and photographs provided by relatives. 70% of deaths occurred in homes, basements and underground garages, 26 were recovered in streets, 26 in the countryside and 18 in cars and other vehicles. 7 people were still missing as of Friday, November 22nd.
The cost of the DANA in Valencia alone, is estimated to be 31 billion euros. Central government have come up with 13 billion euros so far, and the EU will contribute.
The DANA in Valencia and other areas, including Andalucía, is by far the worst natural disaster in Spain, with climate change playing a large part. There are many questions as to how the emergency was so badly managed.
Squatters in Spain
Spanish law provides for an immediate eviction procedure of squatters (Los Okupas) that can be enacted within 48 hours of illegal occupation provided that the property owner can promptly demonstrate proof of ownership and swiftly report the occupation to the police.
When squatters can prove that they have been in a home for more than 48 hours, (and often the owner is not aware that this has happened), getting them out will often need a favourable verdict in a standard civil trial. A written request to leave voluntarily, has to be given to the illegal occupants which may be difficult to do. If this is not successful, a civil complaint has to be started in court. When it comes to trial, the judge issues a sentence. If the judgment is favourable to the owner, an eviction is ordered that will normally be supervised by the police. These procedures usually last for several months, particularly with a backlog in cases at court, leaving the owners in a situation over which they have no control. A period of six months or longer, for 80% of them, is not uncommon.
A new law passed in the lower Congress of Deputies makes “usurpation of a dwelling” illegal under article 245 of the Penal Code, and “trespassing” under article 202. In a maximum of 15 days after a complaint is made to a court squatters can be tried and if convicted, evicted. The law now goes to the upper house Senate for approval that can be “rubber stamped”, approved by a majority, or sent back for amendments. Once approved, within 15 days it receives royal assent, is published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), and becomes law.
There are potential problems with the new housing law approved earlier this year. It seeks to guarantee access to housing for the most vulnerable groups and the anti-squatting law could conflict with some of its principles. If there are minors in the property the Social Services get involved if the children are deemed to be
at risk and the eviction may be postponed until alternative housing is found.
As regards vulnerable people, the housing law prioritises avoiding the eviction of people at risk of social exclusion. The new reform streamlines the processes without making clear exceptions for these cases. Social organisations have warned that this law could increase the criminalisation of people in poverty who occupy homes peacefully out of necessity, and will pay some rent. Housing experts consider that although the anti-squatting law favours owners, its application could unleash controversies if measures are not spelt out that balance the rights of both parties.
Spain is behind other countries in Europe. In France, the landlord can notify the police that their home has been usurped by squatters, and they are authorised to evict the usurpers immediately, without the need for a judge’s permission.
Second-Hand or Refurbished
Coming up to Christmas, there will be a surge in people buying second-hand or refurbished items and the most popular categories are household appliances such as robot vacuum cleaners, coffee makers and fryers These are followed by computer and electronic equipment including routers, memory sticks or headphones, and personal care devices such as hair straighteners or electric razors. Additionally, mobile phones, computers and TVs are for sale. It is estimated that 30% of purchases in these categories will be second hand or refurbished. Savings can be considerable and in certain cases the discount can amount to 50% - 60%.
There is a major difference in buying second-hand goods, usually owned by a private person where the condition can vary according to the prior use, and refurbished ones. Refurbished items, “reacondicionados”, are only sold by major stores, the manufacturer, or some online companies, and they may have been repaired, but if so, they are guaranteed to be fully working and to the same specification as a new one. Where applicable, software will be updated. The Spanish company Anovo refurbish five million devices per annum from more than 350 different manufacturers sent to them from main retailers nationwide, that are then available for sale on the retailers’ websites.
Amazon, Apple, El Corte Inglés, Fnac, MediaMarkt, PcComponentes and Worten all offer refurbished items, and the most popular second-hand companies are Back Market or Manzanas Usadas. Products for sale are often assigned a category that in the case of Amazon is new, very good, good or acceptable. PcComponentes have three: perfect, pre-owned or in working condition, or refurbished or recertified that have come directly from the manufacturer with a 3-year guarantee.
El Corte Inglés sell items solely on their website and describe them as follows: “Refurbished products are those products from the electronics category (Image and Sound, Photography, Telephony, Computing), Video Games and Toys that come from displays in our stores, returns from our customers,
sometimes in perfect condition and only with an opened box, or products that have suffered cosmetic damage in our warehouse and are brand new or almost brand new.” Discounts are up to 60%. There are also used items in categories that go from 1-4 that are scarce use, scarce use with minor marks, moderate use and considerable use, but all of them are refurbished with a three-year warranty with a 15 day return period.
Back Market only sell refurbished electro-domestic items and mobile phones, and claim 15 million buyers world-wide. They advertise that they are contributing to “saving the planet” by selling refurbished items. Manzanas Usadas only sell used Apple products from private sellers on their website, with a commission charge. They have a five-day “escrow” period after the item is delivered and the buyer can notify them and reject the purchase in this period and then return it. If not, the money is then released to the seller.
Advice to consumers purchasing refurbished products is that they should carefully read the advertised condition of the item they are buying. They must also be aware of the guarantee period that has to be 12 months, but as is the case with El Corte Inglés it can be up to three years. It should also be specified that if the item is returned, is there a shipping charge that some companies ask for, and how much will this cost? Nevertheless, there are some bargains to be had.

Los Bandidos Success at Gador
14 Los Bandidos runners participated in the 17th and last race in the Circuito de Carreras Populares Diputación de Almeria 2024 on Saturday 9 November. Before the race a minute’s silence was observed for the victims of the recent floods. The 8.9km course went through the town, past orange groves, along a campo trail, up a seemingly endless hill, ending with a steep downhill to the finish line in front of the Ayuntamiento.
The winner finished in 30:28, with the first lady in 35:14. 176 runners crossed the finish line. Trophies were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each age group as well as to the overall winners. Los Bandidos took home six trophies. The overall winners won their own weight in fresh oranges! Los Bandidos results (position, name, times and age group prizes)

On Sunday, 10th November, three Bandidos; Sarah Briggs, Sharon Howlett and Kristy Barclay, participated in the Bajo Almanzora Media Maratón (which was actually 19.5km). Sarah and Sharon completed this after racing at Gador the previous night! The event started from Hotel Overa and finished in Cuevas de Almanzora. There were lots of ups and downs, mostly along a track above the Embalse de Cuevas de Almanzora, with great views, plenty of water, finishing with post-race beer and snacks
Los Bandidos are keen to integrate and support the local community. We are currently collecting donations, toys, books and games for the Red Cross Christmas Toy Appeal. Follow us on Facebook (https:// www.facebook.com/groups/490933409244200). We look forward to seeing you soon

Jokes of the Month
The Post Office
One Christmas, George in the post office sorting department found a letter addressed to ‘God’. He opened it and read, “I am a 93-year-old widow. Yesterday someone stole my purse with £100 in it, which was all the money I had. Next week is Christmas and I have invited four of my friends over for Christmas lunch but I can’t buy any food. I have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Please God; can you help me?” George put the letter on the staff notice board and between them, they raised £95. They posted the cash to the old lady, and for the rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of the nice thing they had done. Christmas came and went, but a few days later another letter addressed to ‘God’ landed in the Sorting Office. The postmen gathered around while George opened it. It read, “How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me? Because of your generosity, I was able to provide a lovely lunch for my friends. We had a great day and I told my friends about your wonderful gift. Even Father John, our parish priest, is beside himself with joy. One thing however, there was £5 missing. I think it must have been those thieving people at the Post Office”.
The Grandchildren’s Cheques
Grandpa decided that shopping for Christmas presents had become too difficult. All his grandchildren had everything they needed, so he decided to send them each a cheque. On each card, he wrote: ‘Happy Christmas, Grandpa. P.S. Buy your own present!’ While Grandpa enjoyed the family festivities, he thought that his grandchildren were slow to come and see him, or ring him, and it preyed on his mind into the New Year. Then, on January 2nd he was sorting out his study and under a pile of papers he found the cheques for his grandchildren. He had completely forgotten to put them in with the Christmas cards.
The Turkey
Sarah, a new young bride, calls her mother in tears. She sobs, ‘Richard doesn’t appreciate what I do for him.’ ‘Now, now,’ her mother comforted, ‘I am sure it was all just a misunderstanding.’ ‘No, mother, you don’t understand. I bought a frozen turkey roll and he yelled and screamed at me about the price.’ ‘Well, the nerve of that lousy cheapskate,’ says her mum. ‘Those turkey rolls are only a few dollars.’ ‘No, Mother it wasn’t the price of the turkey. It was the airplane ticket.’ “Aeroplane ticket….” What did you need an airplane ticket for?’ ‘Well Mother, I looked at the directions on the package and it said, “Prepare from a frozen state,” so I flew to Alaska.’
The Weather Forecast
One day in early September the chief of a Native American tribe was asked by his tribal elders if the forth coming winter was going to be cold or mild. The chief asked his medicine man, but he too had lost touch with reading signs from the natural world around the Great Lakes. Neither of them had any idea about how to predict the coming winter. However, the chief decided to take a modern approach, and he rang the National Weather Service. ‘Yes, it is going to be a cold winter,’ the meteorological officer told the chief. Consequently, he went back to his tribe and told the men to collect plenty of firewood. A fortnight later, the chief called the Weather Service and asked for an update. ‘Are you still forecasting a cold winter?’ he asked. ‘Yes, very cold’, the weather officer told him. As a result of this brief conversation, the chief went back to the tribe and told his people to collect every bit of wood they could find. In December, just before Christmas, the chief called the National Weather Service once more and asked about the coming winter. ‘Yes,’ he was told, ‘it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever.’ ‘How can you be so sure?’ the chief asked. The weatherman replied, ‘We know that the Native Americans around the Great Lakes are collecting wood like crazy.’
Getting Into Heaven
Three men died on Christmas Eve in a car crash after a Christmas party and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. ‘In honour of this holy season,’ Saint Peter said, ‘You must each possess something that symbolises Christmas to get into heaven.’ The Englishman fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. ‘It’s to light all the church candles’, he said. ‘You may pass through the pearly gates,’ Saint Peter said. The Scotsman reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them so they all rattled and said, ‘These are to remind me to ring the church bells on Christmas Day.’ Saint Peter said, ‘You may pass through the pearly gates’. The Irishman started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of lacy red women’s knickers. St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and said, ‘Well, they are red, but what do those symbolise?’ The Irishman replied, ‘They’re Carol’s’.
Two Week Holiday
For Christmas, I bought my wife a world map and gave her a dart. I told her to throw it and wherever it lands, we will go on vacation after this pandemic is over. Turns out we are spending two weeks behind the fridge.
The Red Wagon
It was the day after Christmas at St Peter and St Paul’s church and Father John, the vicar, was looking at the nativity scene in the porch outside when he noticed the baby Jesus was missing. Immediately, Father John’s thoughts turned to calling in the police but as he was about to do so, he saw little Nathan with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus. Father John approached Nathan and asked him, ‘Well, Nathan, where did you get the little infant Jesus?’ Nathan looked up, smiled, and replied, ‘I took him from the church.’ ‘And why did you take him?’ With a big grin, Nathan said, ‘Well, Father John, about a week before Christmas I prayed to Lord Jesus. I told him if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas, I would give him a ride around the block in it.’
The Christmas Wish
The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when Emily, a young lady aged about 20 walked up and sat on his lap. Now, we all know that Santa doesn’t usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him, so he asked her, ‘What do you want for Christmas?’ ‘Something for my mother, please,’ replied Emily sweetly. ‘Something for your mother? Well, that’s very loving and thoughtful of you,’ smiled Santa. ‘What would you like me to bring her?’ Emily answered, ‘A handsome and rich son-in-law.’
The Presents
Alex was seven; all his Christmas presents were always signed, ‘From Father Christmas.’ A little while after Alex had opened all his presents on Christmas morning, he was looking quite down in the mouth for no obvious reason. ‘What’s the matter, Alex?’ I asked. He replied slowly, ‘I really hoped that you and Mummy would give me something for Christmas. My friend Jane has a lot of presents from her parents.’
