18th.
Last year Easter Sunday was March 31st but this year it is on April 20th so all the associated dates and events have moved as well. The Águilas carnival main parades start on Sunday, March 2nd with the last parade on Saturday, March 8th and we have more details in our ‘What’s On’ section.
This year, the UK’s Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, is on April 17th and it is a fiesta day in Andalucía but not in the rest of Spain. This is because the “Día de San José” (Spanish Father’s Day), always on March 19th, was swapped with Maundy Thursday in Andalucía. Monday, March 17th is St Patrick’s Day and Spaniards have got used to people walking round in funny hats! UK Mothering Sunday, the 4th Sunday in Lent (that starts on Ash Wednesday) is on March 30th this year, but Spanish Mother’s Day is always the first Sunday in May.
Locally, in the Mojácar and Cuevas del Almanzora areas, there is a very strange event that takes place three Thursdays earlier than Maundy Thursday, and is thought to have started in the 17th century. This is “Día de la Vieja” (“Old Lady Day”) on March 27th this year. Effigies are made of brightly coloured tissue paper wrapped round a wooden cross with the large head filled with sweets. These are taken into the countryside, or in some places near beaches, and children throw stones at the head to get at the sweets. The origin of this is not completely clear, but one explanation is that grannies took their grandchildren into the countryside as a moment of light relief during the solemn period of Lent with no festivities. It also takes place in some municipalities in Málaga, Catalonia and in France. Local businesses will be shut during the afternoon and evening and the time in the countryside is often the scene of barbecues, drinks and a family chin wag. As we do every month, we list events in our area that may be of interest to our readers in our ‘What’s On’ section. Many people will have found that some of the restaurants they like to go to have been shut
during February, when the owners and workers have a holiday, but in March they will be open again and thinking about the run up to Easter.
Import tariffs in the EU and countries that export goods to the US are very much in the news. We explain in our ‘In the News’ section that Spain imports far more than they export, but olive oil is a major export. The largest amount comes from Andalucía, including producers in our province, and a hefty import tax into the US if it happens, will be very bad news.
The “omnibus” bill in parliament that included a large number of smaller bills, has now been passed on the second attempt with some left out. State pensions have the 2.8% increase reinstated, paid in February, and the rise in the minimum wage from January 1st has been approved.
A major EU “Pact for a Clean Industry” has been published including the proposal that IVA(VAT) on electricity bills in EU states will come down to 5%, from the present 21% in Spain, and also the removal of some indirect taxes. This will be very good news when it is approved and comes into force.
The clocks “Spring forward” an hour on the last Sunday in March which is March 30th. There are no national fiesta days in April but Monday, May 1st, is a national “Day of the Worker” fiesta date.
The minimum wage in Spain has now gone up by 4.4% to 1,184 euros, an increase of 50 euros per month, paid 14 times a year for some people or 14/12 each month. This applies to 1.8 million workers and was backdated to January 1st. As we mentioned last month, traditionally, the income tax threshold has been put up at the time of any increase so that people on the minimum wage do not have to pay anything. This time, there is a major disagreement between the Minister for Labour, Yolanda Díaz, and the Minister for Finance, María Jesús Montero, who wants the increase to be taxable. She argues that 1,184 euros times 14 is a decent amount of money, no longer a “subsistence amount”, it is more than a living wage and has gone up by 61% with the PSOE government since 2018. She claims that only 20% of people will have to pay tax, such as a single person without a partner or children or a mortgage that reduces income tax, and they will only pay about 300 euros out of the 700 euros increase. She calculates that from all of the 1.8 million workers on the new wage, they will pay about two billion euros in tax that the exchequer could do with and is entitled to collect. How political parties in parliament will vote is unclear, as there are some that agree and some that disagree. A coalition of parties who are against paying tax could defeat the government so that it has to be scrapped.
“The menu of the day” continues to be a spectacular formula for success, according to Emilio Gallego, secretary general of the Spanish Hotel and Catering Industry, which brings together 52 associations throughout mainland Spain. They conclude that Spanish restaurants serve an average of 4 million menus of the day each day. “Anyone who is a regular user of the menu of the day in Spain realises that the value for money is unparalleled”. He explains that the key lies in a perfect organisation of what is going to be produced and an adequate volume and states, “Establishments need constant turnover and a sufficient number of customers for the model
to be profitable, as well as efficient planning that allows them to optimise purchases, preserve food better, and organise production at times of less activity”. In their latest study that measured the average price of the menu of the day they concluded that it is 14 euros, 19.5% more than in 2016. This increase is well below the general Consumer Price Index that has gone up 23.4% and the rise in food and beverage costs that have gone up 39.2%. One restaurant in Madrid has provided a menu of the day since it opened in 2005 when it cost the equivalent of 8,90 euros and it now costs 18,50 euros. The owner states that they have always had a good menu that includes eight starters and eight main courses. To keep competitive, he is making simple recipes, “I’ve eliminated unnecessary ingredients but the food is better than ever”. He states that for a restaurant the size of his, he needs to serve 40-50 meals, otherwise he is only covering his costs as his profit margin is not a lot. If he can attract 40-50 people every day, it is successful and making some money. “It is essential to buy local and seasonal produce, not only for quality, but also for the cost factor”. Also, he says that lunchtime customers often come back for a drink and a tapa which is good additional income. There is no current legal obligation for all restaurants to have a menu of the day. A 1965 law made it mandatory to offer a complete menu with a first course, second course, bread, wine and dessert, but today, the rules are more flexible. However, establishments with a capacity for more than 30 people must offer this option according to Spanish law, unless this is not a requirement in the appropriate autonomous community. Menus of the day should be available every weekday, but a restaurant can provide them every day of the week if they wish to. Apart from being available at lunchtime, they may be available for diners in the evening. Many restaurants nowadays only have one menu with multiple choices for a set price.
President Trump wants to introduce ‘Reciprocal Tariffs’ to balance tax on US exports by raising
import taxes into the US. They will apply to each country and are supposed to be worked out by April 1st , but this is a monumental task. Spain has a trade deficit with the US as we import more items than we export. In 2024, Spanish sales to the US totalled almost 17 billion euros, compared to imports of 26 billion but in a list of the top 28 countries that export to the US, Spain is in 25th place with only 2.5% of GPD. This is good news, hopefully, but the 25% import tax on steel and aluminium applies to all countries and comes into effect on March 12th. Spain is the tenth largest exporter but this only amounts to 255 million euros. The agri-food sector is the only area in which Spain maintains a trade surplus with the US thanks to products such as olive oil and wine. The largest exports of olive oil into the US come from Andalucía and with wine amounts to 476 million euros. A high import tax on olive oil that Trump introduced in 2018 but President Biden cancelled, is bad news. Many economists consider that the reciprocal tariffs are a negotiation tool and may well be amended. The European Commission believes that it has room to negotiate and avoid a major trade war. On February 18th Trump announced an import tax of 25% on all cars (there is already a 25% import tax on pick-up trucks), semiconductors and pharmaceutical products to come into force in April. He hinted that the tax on the last two sectors might rise even more in the future. Spain exports cars, spare parts and car accessories into the US every year worth about 1.5 billion euros and pharmaceutical products worth 589 million euros.
In an article we comment on the success of the EU Green Deal. At a recent meeting in Brussels, Ursula von der Leyen announced new incentives entitled ‘Pact for a Clean Industry’. She reminded member states that they must bear in mind the commitment to a 90% reduction in carbon emissions by 2040. She stated that member states should have more incentives to promote renewable energy and be more competitive and suggested that governments should partly subsidise business investments in environmental
technology. As regards tax on electricity bills, she proposed a reduction in IVA (VAT) “to the minimum threshold of 5% and the elimination of the taxes on electricity bills that finance non-energy policies.” She stated that there is a need to decouple the price of gas from electricity prices when they skyrocket “based on models tested in emergency situations.” This refers to the ‘Iberian Exception’ granted to Spain and Portugal to contain the price of gas during the worst period of the energy crisis. In June 2021, IVA on electricity bills in Spain was dropped to 10% and in July 2022 down to 5%. In January 2024 it went back up to 10% and from this January it is 21% again. Ursula von der Leyen stressed that this is important because gas, which has become more expensive again in recent months, will remain at high prices for the next few years. It appears that there will be funding from the current Budgetary Framework that expires in 2027. Reducing IVA and other taxes on electricity bills will make electricity much cheaper.
Whilst US and Russian delegations were meeting in Saudi Arabia to discuss the end of the war in Ukraine, the EU announced their 16th range of sanctions against Russia. The most important one is a ban on importing raw aluminium products in the form of ingots, slabs and billets. At present, these only amount to 6% of total raw aluminium imports into the EU as many member states have already stopped buying from Russia. Another sanction is because Russia has been circumventing the ban on oil coming into the EU by using a “shadow fleet” of old ships. Sometimes these ships transfer oil on the high seas into other ships that then come to the EU. The ban is on 73 named ships that now cannot enter EU ports, and this sanction includes owners and captains. The ships, often uninsured, are alleged to hide their identity by turning off their transponders and sending false information as to who they are. Apart from this the EU believe there is a real danger of one of these old ships spilling oil which could cause an environmental disaster. Thirteen Russian banks have been denied access to the SWIFT electronic transfer system,
and there is also an export ban on sending some chemicals, chrome and precision tools to Russia. A ban on importing Russian liquified natural gas (LNG) was proposed, but it was decided to wait for discussions with the US regarding importing more LNG that may be part of the tariff war solutions.
At the end of 2024 in our province, people paying into the Social Security system, so in work, included 85,000 non-Spanish workers. This is 25% and is the highest percentage in all of Spain and up from 80,000 at the end of 2023. Total people in work were 338,000 that is also a record number out of a population of 762,000. In Spain overall, at the end of 2024 only 13% were non-Spanish workers. We had 17,400 from EU states and 67,600 from nonEU countries. Agriculture is the big motor of our economy and Almería province exports the highest amounts of fruit and vegetables of any other province in Spain. 42,500 people were employed in this sector and 8,000 people were self-employed running their own businesses in agriculture. At the year-end, 46,067 people were registered as being unemployed in our province, the lowest figure for the month of December prior to the construction crisis, but only 9,000 were non-Spanish. The “foreigners office” in Almería city employs more people than any other public department and in 2024 processed 43,000 applications of various types. The National Institute of Statistics forecasts the percentage of non-Spanish workers in our province in 2039 reaching 35%.
The Almeria Diputación (County council) is currently installing renewable energy solar panels in municipalities in our province, including Pechina, Rioja, Velefique, Arboleas, Chercos, Serón, Purchena and Turre, thanks to the solar energy ‘DUS 5000 Plan’. All these installations have been awarded to contractors, are underway or completed and there are installations in 50 of the 104 municipalities with 350 panels. Total investment comes to more than 6 million euros and 57% is from EU grants and the other 43%
from the Diputación. The energy needs of each municipality are calculated and solar panels are installed to cover 80%. If less power is being used, as is the case at weekends, the surplus electricity generated is sold back to the supply companies which is additional income for the municipality.
A few weeks ago Mercadona announced that they were making changes to their fishmonger counters and creating parking spaces for electric scooters. Another change is the increase by 99 céntimos for the delivery of goods ordered online. The charge has now gone up to 8,20 euros due to the rising costs and inflation. As regards their balance sheet, the online service generated sales worth 650 million euros in 2024 with four million orders, but it is only 2% of Mercadona’s total turnover. A few years ago, at one of his rare appearances before journalists, Juan Roig, the Mercadona owner and chairman, was very rude about his existing online service. He stated that one of his daughters would be put in charge of making it more successful, efficient and customer friendly.
Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has announced legislation that will result in mortgages being available for the purchase of modular prefabricated houses. The proposal, already registered in Congress, seeks to follow the successful model adopted by countries such as the UK, the US, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark
and Norway. These countries have shown that modular housing is a viable solution, an effective response to the growing demand for housing, and with ecological benefits as they are well insulated. Modular homes have several advantages as the components are pre-fabricated in a factory and then assembled at the construction site. This takes advantage of economies of scale by standardising production, reducing labour and material costs and significantly accelerating construction times, ready in a matter of weeks and erected in days. It is claimed that the construction industry will not lose out, as there needs to be land clearance and a reinforced concrete base with all the services connected. The number of workers in the construction industry in Spain are not enough, and along with plumbers and electricians come under the category of “jobs difficult to fill”. Qualified immigrants have a fast-track process to fill these vacancies. Some houses are manufactured in wood but ones made with composite wall and roof panels are a more permanent solution. Alternatively, modular houses can consist of prefabricated cubes or be shipping container size that slot together. Specialist companies produce “industrialised bathroom” modules that come completely tiled with all the sanitaryware and accessories in place that greatly reduces the traditional cost. All that is needed are simple water and sewage connections. One of the pioneering developers is Aedas Homes, which since 2018 has built 6,730 fully or partially industrialised homes in 105 developments that includes 1,200 industrialised bathrooms. Some homes have been manufactured entirely offsite in a factory and others integrate prefabricated components such as bathrooms, facades and stairs. Prefabricated homes are a way of quickly building houses and Pedro Sánchez wants to build 200,000 homes per year, to overcome the housing crisis. Aedas Homes state that much larger factories could produce high numbers of modular houses by 2026.
Figures published recently for 2024 show that the GDP (Gross National Product which is the
‘PIB’ in Spain) grew by 0.8% in the second, third and final quarter. This raised the total to 3.2% which is exactly four times the average in the Eurozone and above the 2.5% in 2023. This is in stark contrast to the almost nil growth in the UK. One of the driving forces was tourism that contributed 208 million euros, up 6.5% on 2023 and was 26% of the GDP rise. Most of the rise in tourism was international visitors that totalled 94 million, 10% more than in 2023, who spent 216 million euros up 16%. Optimistic projections for 2025 are that the number of international tourists may reach 100 million with a growth of 9% up to the end of April. The population grew in 2024 to 48.9 million, an extra 500,000, partly as a result of more immigrants. The time taken for them being allowed to work and obtain residency was considerably speeded up and this was the main aim of immigration policies in 2024. The working population went up to the record number of 21.8 million with an additional 470,000 during the year and unemployment dropped to 10.6%, the lowest level since 2008. A negative figure was inflation that went up slightly to 3% in January. This was put down to the cost of electricity, gas, rises of 4.7% for diesel, and 3.7% for petrol, since before Christmas. “Core inflation” went down to 2.4%, a decline of 0.2% and this is the general figure not including the most volatile elements such as fresh food and energy. The IMF (International Monitory Fund) expects the average inflation in 2025 to fall to 1.9%; the European Commission estimates 2.2% and the Bank of Spain 2.1%. At the end of January, the rise in the minimum wage for 2025 went up by 4.4% to 1,184 euros, an increase of 50 euros per month, paid 14 times during the year for some people or 14/12 each month. This applies to 1.8 million workers and it was backdated to January 1st.
Residents of Almería province always come forward when there is a request for blood donors. In 2024, more than 1,500 people registered as bone marrow donors which is 26% of the total number of new registrations throughout Andalucía which totals 5,925. A bone marrow procedure is a blood
7 smart ways to save fuel on your daily drive from Generali Expatriates
Did you know that burning just 1 litre of petrol produces roughly 2.3 kg of CO2? The more fuel you consume, the more CO2 is released into the atmosphere. Reducing fuel consumption not only saves money but also helps lower your environmental impact. Here are seven simple ways to help you save fuel on your daily journeys.
1. Plan your route
Before you set off, make sure you have a clear route planned and monitor traffic updates. Adding just 10 minutes to an hour-long drive can boost fuel consumption by up to 14%, not counting the time spent sitting in traffic. A little planning can go a long way towards saving fuel.
2. Check your tyre pressure
Underinflated tyres can cost you more at the pump. Just 0.5 bar below the recommended pressure can increase fuel consumption by 2% in urban areas and 4% on motorways. Underinflation also increases the risk of a blowout by up to 60% and reduces tyre life by around 15%. Keeping them properly inflated not only saves fuel but also increases your safety.
3. Carry only what you need
Every extra kilogram increases your fuel consumption. In fact, every additional 50 kg can raise your fuel consumption by almost 3%. By removing unnecessary items from your vehicle, you can improve fuel efficiency.
4. Maintain a consistent speed
Driving at a steady speed is one of the best ways to use less fuel. Try to accelerate gradually and ease off the accelerator early when you’re slowing down. It can be tricky in city traffic, but it’s a simple way to save fuel.
5. Use higher gears to avoid over-revving
To get the most out of your engine, keep the rpm low by using higher gears. Petrol cars perform best at 2,000 to 2,500 rpm, while diesel vehicles perform best at 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. This strategy relaxes the engine and reduces unnecessary fuel consumption.
6. Turn off the engine during long stops
If you plan to be stationary for more than a minute, turn off the engine. Idling can waste 0.5–0.7 litres of fuel each hour. Many cars now automatically shut off the engine when you are not driving, saving fuel and lowering emissions even further.
7. Use your air conditioning wisely
Air conditioning can increase fuel consumption by 5% to 20%. However, driving with the windows down is not ideal either. For the most efficient driving, keep your windows closed and set the air conditioning to a comfortable 21–23°C.
Of course, the most effective way to save fuel is to switch to an electric vehicle. Electric vehicles lower CO2 emissions significantly and offer longterm benefits. While they do not yet dominate the roads, choosing one means not just saving money on fuel, but also contributing to a better, healthier future!
Generali Expatriates, one of the top insurance companies in Spain, also provides specific cover for electric vehicles that includes, for example: travel assistance (emergency recharging/ towing from km 0), adapted pricing with permanent discounts, protection for charging cables and adapters up, battery coverage (for damage, fire, and theft—even for third-party owned batteries), and civil liability (up to 300,000 euros per claim).

transfusion of stem cells, which can be done in two ways. Firstly, by extracting them from the peripheral blood, as if it were a blood donation and this is the way in which the extraction is carried out in 90% of cases. The second method is by a puncture in the hip bone under general anaesthetic. The only side effect is a feeling of weakness for a few days. Stem cells quickly regenerate 100% naturally in a healthy body.
The harshest sentence in the Spanish legal system is now 10 years old. The ‘Revisable Permanent Prison Sentence’ came into force in March 2015 as a result of a modification of the Penal Code for “the most atrocious and serious crimes”. 52 people, 40 men and 12 women have been given this prison term with 10 in Andalucía, five in Almería, two in Seville, one in Huelva, one in Jerez and one in Jaén. Of these 10, three of them are women. In Almería province, most people know about Ana Julia Quezada, the woman who killed 8-yearold Gabriel Cruz in February 2018 in Rodalquilar. In 2019 the Almería Provincial Court convicted her of murder with malice, with the aggravating circumstance of cruel kinship, since she was the partner of the victim’s father, and she was given a sentence of 30 years. She took part in searches when 2,000 police and 3,000 volunteers were looking for him and spoke to the press, but she had murdered Gabriel very shortly after taking him to a Cortijo where she was doing some conversion work. She became the prime suspect after she claimed to have found Gabriel’s tee shirt some distance away, put police had already searched this area twice. When police stopped her in her car, they found that she had transferred Gabriel’s body from where she had hidden it into the car boot. Revisable permanent prison sentences vary between 25 to 35 years, depending on the nature and seriousness of the crime committed. After serving the complete sentence the person can ask for a review taking into account factors such as personality, background, crime, social and family circumstances and reports from specialists. They must demonstrate a positive evolution,
facilitating their possible social reintegration, and different parties present arguments and evidence for or against the prisoner’s release. If denied, the convicted person has to wait for another review after a specified time period, so the sentence is extended until this new application. There is no maximum sentence. Ana Julia Quezada was the first woman in Spain to be given this type of prison term and it was confirmed on an appeal to the Supreme Court.
At the end of 2024, vehicle production in Spanish factories fell by 3% compared to 2023 with a grand total of 2.4 million, as only 139,000 were sold last December. The Association of Vehicle Manufacturers blames this on the low demand for electrified vehicles, both in the domestic and European markets, as well as time spent when assembly plants in Spain were being converted to allow the production of electrified vehicles. Passenger cars, with an increase of 0.6% during 2024 were the highest number with 1.9 million. Europe is Spain’s leading export destination, amounting to 93%. As for electrified vehicles, production was 8.5% of the total for 2024, with a decrease of 2.9% compared to 2023. The continuing low demand for electric vehicles is a big problem for manufacturers who have to meet the 2025 reduction in emissions, apart from the 2030 all-electric vehicle target.
Last month we explained that Spain is nowhere near the 2% of GDP for 2024 that is supposed to be spent on defence by NATO countries and in 2025 the target for Spain is only 1.32%. The current plan is that it will be increased every year until the 2% is reached in 2029. This will more than double the 17.5 billion euros allocated to defence in 2024, with the target of reaching 36.5 billion euros in just five years. Spain’s Ministry of Defence claims that at the NATO summit in Wales in 2014, the 2% was only a recommendation, but at the Madrid meeting in 2022, just four months after Vladimir Putin’s troops invaded Ukraine, the 2%
became a commitment. At a NATO meeting in the Hague in June when President Trump will meet his European allies, it is expected that the percentage is put up to 3%. Recently, in his meeting with the defence ministers in Brussels, Pete Hegseth, the new head of the Pentagon, proposed raising military spending to 5% of GDP, a threshold not even reached by the US, which spent 3.38% last year. This is clearly impossible. Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, is hoping that if Spain has to increase spending more than planned, the EU will advance some funds. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is proposing that defence investment in NATO countries should not count towards meeting the debt and deficit limits set in the EU’s stability pact, so this will help Spain somewhat.
Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, is keen to attract Chinese companies to come to Spain. China considers that Spain is a strategic location in Europe with a good labour market and the Chinese population are very integrated. Chinese car manufacturer Chery and Catalonia’s Ebro EVMotors have signed a deal to build electric cars in Barcelona in a former Nissan factory. The EU sees renewable energy projects as a necessity and is keen to expand them, and China is the world leader in the production of solar panels and batteries for electric cars. In Catalonia in mid-January, the mining company Iberpotash, a subsidiary of the Israeli company ICL, announced an alliance with the Chinese company Shenzhen Dynanonic. They will create a lithium iron phosphate cathode factory and reopen the Sallent potash mine that closed in 2020. The new project does not yet have a start date or an estimate of how many workers will be able to find employment, but it is seen as great news for the area, both by the company and by the unions. In Catalonia at Mont-roig del Campo, the Stellantis automobile group (Opel, Peugeot, Citroën and Fiat) and the world’s leading battery producer, China’s CATL, have formed a partnership. They will invest 4.1 billion euros to build the largest battery plant in Spain. In Extremadura the Chinese
group Envision plans to instal a lithium battery gigafactory beside a mine to extract substantial amounts of the lithium raw material. Without Chinese involvement, the Volkswagen group are going to build a gigafactory manufacturing cells for batteries in Valencia, with an investment of 10 billion euros. The production of the cells in 2026 will be enough for 500,000 vehicles and these will be used in their various factories in Europe. Subsidies from the autonomous community amount to 152 million euros.
In our “In the News” items last month we commented on an “omnibus bill” in the Spanish Parliament that was not approved on January 22nd. It was re-introduced and was successful, with a few proposals taken out. Some of these were supposed to follow on from December 31st, including the continuation of the ‘MOVES III’ scheme of subsidies for the purchase of zero emission vehicles, plug-in hybrids and charging points. There is also a deduction of 15% of the cost off income tax up to 3,000 euros. The continuation until June 30th was agreed in parliament in November but it was taken out of the re-introduction of the omnibus bill. It has to be put through parliament as a separate issue now and at the beginning of February, Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister, stated that it would be introduced in “a matter of weeks”. A big problem is that the grants for vehicles purchased from January 1st-22nd are null and void. If a buyer scraps a car that is over
seven years old, to buy a zero-emission vehicle the discount is 7,000 or 5,000 euros for a plugin model. The unfortunate buyers who scrapped cars of this age before January 22nd can’t apply for the discount. From January 23rd dealers have had to tell potential purchasers to put off buying one until the discount is re-introduced. When it is in force again it remains to be seen if it is backdated. Manufactures and dealers want the discount to be taken off the purchase price at the point of sale as a purchaser has to apply for the discount from their autonomous community, in our case Andalucía, and this can take from 12-24 months. Hopefully, this problem may be addressed when the scheme comes back to be debated and approved. Dealers are not impressed and are asking for a new and improved one quickly, as this will greatly affect sales.
The DGT (Spain’s Traffic Department) plans to introduce their major drink-driving regulations sometime this year after it was approved in the Spanish Parliament by a simple majority. The limits have been drastically reduced and Pere Navarro, the head of the DGT, described the new regulations as being “equivalent in practice to a total ban on alcohol consumption whilst driving”. Until now, drivers in general can drive with up to 0.25 milligrams per litre (mg/l) of exhaled air when breathalysed and 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre of blood (g/l) taken at a police station. The new limits are 0.10 mg/l in exhaled air and 0.20 g/l in blood. Fines (50% for prompt payment) and penalties are as follows: Between 0.1mg/l and 0.25mg/ in air or between 0.1g/l and 0.4g/l in blood results in a fine of 200 euros and a loss of 2 licence points. Between 0.26 mg/l and 0.5 mg/l in air or between 0.5g/l and 1g/l in blood, the penalty is 500 euros and a loss of 4 points. From 0.51mg/l to 0.6mg/l in air or 1.01g/l to 1.2gl/l in blood will result in a fine of 1,000 euros and a loss of 6 points. More than 0.6mg/l in air or 1.2g/l in blood is considered a crime and is punishable by 3 to 6 months in prison, 6 to 12 months of fines, or work for the benefit of the community from 30 to 90 days, with the
loss of a licence from 1 to 4 years. The DGT has published a table of g/l limits stating that for a man between 70 and 90 kg it would give a reading of between 0.21 and 0.28 if he drinks one 330 ml beer, between 0.43 and 0.55 with two beers and between 0.64 and 0.83 with three. In the case of a woman between 50 and 70 kg, one beer would give a reading between 0.34 and 0.48, two beers would amount to between 0.68 and 0.95 and three would be between 1.02 and 1.43. A man between 70 and 90 kg would have a reading of between 0.16 and 0.20 if he drinks one glass of wine. With two glasses he would be between 0.31 and 0.40 and with three glasses between 0.47 and 0.60. At present, a man who drinks two glasses of wine will not normally be over the limit. With the new limits, two glasses of wine would be enough to exceed 0.2g/l in blood and there are corresponding lower limits for women. Pere Navarro states that the reform puts Spain in line with other European countries that have already reduced their blood alcohol levels. In the EU, Sweden, Poland and Estonia have set the limit at 0.2 g/l in blood, while countries such as Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania have opted for a 0.0 g/l limit. The limit in the UK is 0.8g/l in blood or 0.35mg/l in exhaled air, so considerably higher than the existing limits in Spain and extremely higher than the new limits. For international tourists, including ones from the UK, driving a car in Spain will make them similarly liable for exceeding the new limits. The DGT says that when the new regulations come into place there will be a campaign to educate drivers and probably an interim period before the new fines and penalties apply. We will come back to this in the ‘Focus magazine’ when the new regulations have a start date.
The most popular electric cars sold in January were the Kia EV3 with 417 purchases, the Chinese BYD Dolphin with 393, Dacia Spring (manufactured in China) with 374, the Citroën C3 with 250 and the BYD Atto 3 with 234. These figures were 48% up, but the share of the market was only 7%. Tesla sales plummeted to only 268 after the 2024 discounts
were discontinued. The dominant type of car in Spain is the non-plug-in hybrid that accounted for 45.2% of the market and Toyota had three models out of the top five. Their Corolla was first with 1,736 sales, the Yaris Cross was third with 1,484 and the Yaris was fourth with 1,126 sales. The Nissan Qashqai had sales of 1,546 and the Hyundai Tucson 992 sales tied with the Dacia Duster at 992 and the Toyota RAV 4 at 990. The best-selling car in Spain continues to be the Dacia Sandero with 2,706 sold, then a perfect tie between the Hyundai Tucson and the Chinese MG ZS, both with 2,103. They were followed by the Toyota Corolla and C-HR, while the Nissan Qashqai took 6th place. The Toyota Yaris Cross, the Renault Captur, the Seat Ibiza and the Kia Sportage completed the top ten in January. Of all of them, only the Captur and the Ibiza are made in Spain. As we explained last month, the big problem in 2025 is the CAFE drop in CO2 emissions from 115 grammes down to 93.6. Some manufacturers with poor predictions for 2025 are suggesting that they form a partnership with a low emission manufacturer and Toyota are in talks with Tesla. Another manufacturer could become a partner with Volvo. This is seen as a good way to get the average emissions from this partnership down to the new amount. All manufacturers are still hoping that the reduced EU emission figures will be postponed until 2027.
The adjunct to the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city received permission to name it “El Hospital Materno Infantil Princesa Leonor” (The Princess Leonor Maternity Hospital). Princess Leonor is the elder daughter of King Felipe VI and in direct line to the Spanish throne. In 2024 there were 2,829 registered births from women of 52 different nationalities. Of the 2,829 births, 2,214 (78.3%) were vaginal, with 615 caesarean sections (21.7%), divided into 308 scheduled and 307 urgent ones, along with 45 multiple births. In terms of cultural diversity, most of the mothers were from Spain (1,828 births), but a significant number of births were also recorded by women from Morocco (476) and then other countries,
to complete the 52 different nationalities. The Director of the hospital stated, “This fact highlights the inclusiveness and adaptability of the health team to serve a diverse population.”
Expenditure in 2025 for the 123 Mojácar town hall employees has been increased from 5.8 million euros last year to 6.3 million which is 43% of the 14.5 million euros budget. Categories of employees are Operational Services with 33 cleaning operators and 29 Citizen Security Employees. (Local police are employed by their municipality and the money comes from town hall funding). Education accounts for 14 employees, Secretarial Services and Administration each have 9 employees, Urban Planning has 8, Culture 7, Tourism 5, Sports 4, Treasury 3 and General Services and Technological Innovation have one each. Projects for this year include 500,539 euros for the construction of a footbridge over the River Aguas and 433,768 euros for the regeneration of spaces on the beach. The project of the creation of the “Smart Green Mojácar Playa Corridor” consists of a large cycling route that will connect the entire coastal area. The budget is 1,057,821 euros this year and 528,910 next year. The rehabilitation of the Macenas Castle also known as Torre Macenas, considered to be one of the landmarks of the municipality’s heritage complex, is among the 1.48 million that the Mojácar Town Council has allocated in general, with a cost of 42,472 euros. This military structure, from the second half of the eighteenth century, is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Measures for adaptation and prevention for climate change has 264,617 euros, traffic moderation 245,102 euros, tourist signage 127,050 euros, rural road plans 80,000 euros and development of the Tourism Intelligence Platform 58,200 euros. Mojácar town hall will finance these investments with its own resources of 1,271,266 euros and the remaining 210,063 will come from subsidies and capital transfers. A total of 996,277 euros will be dedicated to the replacement of infrastructures and goods, while 311,617 euros will be for new investments in these categories.
The Almería City Sports Complex
Turki Al-Sheikh is the millionaire owner of the Almería UD football company who plans to build a huge sports centre at El Toyo to be known as the ‘Almería Sports City’. The ‘Dreambeach’ music festival rented part of the land last year and will again this year, but so far not in 2026. Outline proposals submitted to the Almería council are for a total of 132,084m2 where there will be three different areas and will involve an investment of 12.9 million euros. Two buildings will be for the Almería UD first team (players and technical staff) and the second one for the academy (youth football players). Eight football fields will be built on a plot of more than 50,000m2 and one of them will have a stand for 3,500 spectators along with all the associated services. Six 11-a-side football and two 8-a-side football pitches will be built. A careful design of green spaces is also included in the project.
Andalucía intends to sanction Ryanair for the surcharge of hand luggage after complaints made to FACUA which is a consumer organisation of members who pay an annual fee. In a press release, the Consumer Service of the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Junta de Andalucía in Seville points out that the practices of Ryanair charging a surcharge for travelling with hand luggage is abusive. This followed official complaints to FACUA by five air travellers from Seville. There are already disciplinary proceedings proposed against Vueling for committing the same irregularities. The claim in a written document is that these charges are an abusive practice that violates the Air Navigation Law, which establishes that “the carrier will be obliged to transport free of charge in the cabin, as hand luggage, the objects and packages that the
traveller carries with him” and the only exception is for “reasons of safety, linked to the weight or size of the object, in relation to the characteristics of the aircraft”. The proposed sanction for the five passengers who complained is 46,250 euros, classifying the infringements as being “serious”. FACUA Sevilla had asked that the infringement was increased to “very serious”, which would raise the amount of the fine to between 60,001 euros and one million euros. FACUA points out that it is not a local company, but “a commercial company that operates nationally and internationally that operates in 37 countries with more than 3,600 daily flights”. They maintain that the fine must have a deterrent effect, so that the commission of the offence is not more beneficial to the airline than compliance with the infringed regulations. FACUA’s complaints for charging extra for hand luggage have already resulted in fines of 179 million euros against five airlines. In addition to more than 107 million to Ryanair, the Consumer Ministry in Madrid has fined Vueling 39.2 million, EasyJet 29.1 million, Norwegian Air 1.6 million and Volotea 1.2 million euros for these surcharges.
Figures for 2024 are not yet available but in 2023, the vehicle fleet in Almeria province reached 587,096. Of this total, 66.1% are more than 10yrs old. Whilst 33.9% are below 10yrs, 36.4% are from 11 to 20yrs and a significant 29.7% are over 20yrs old with an average age of 14.58. Older cars have implications in terms of energy efficiency, emissions and of course maintenance costs. The DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) considers that the age of vehicles in Spain gives great cause for concern. They state that older cars are more unsafe and owners may skip regular servicing, with only pre-ITV (MOT) checks at the specified intervals. In the first half of 2024 a total of 8,597 second-hand electric vehicles were sold in Spain, of which more than 50% are less than three years old. Some dealers state that this is because many owners regret buying them! The general opinion from dealers regarding the purchase of new electric cars is that turning zero-emission vehicles into an affordable option involves a major review of the current incentive schemes and their problems and support for at least 36 months to
make owners more inclined to buy them. A major scrapyard owner states that drivers are putting off buying a new or second-hand car for much longer. They have recorded the highest kilometres of cars that came to them in 2024 and a Citroén Berlingo had done 717,983kms, a Skoda Octavia 719,391kms, an Audi 6 741,590kms, a Renault Master 767,070kms, an Audi A4 Avant 772,454kms, a Volkswagen Passat 775,073kms, and a 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 783,230kms. Two more Mercedes-Benz E-Class had clocked up 812,185kms and 813,067kms. The vehicle with the highest km reading was a Volkswagen 2005 Transporter van with 846,804kms. The common feature was that all of these were diesel fuelled, as may be expected.
Spain’s main listed banks – Santander, BBVA, Caixa Bank, Sabadell, Bankinter and Unicaja achieved an all-time record profit in 2024, with a total of 31.7 billion euros, an increase of 20.5% compared to the previous year. Banco Santander smashed its profit record, with 12.5 billion euros, 14% more than their record profits of 11 billion euros in 2023. Investors have responded very positively to the news and shares soared more than 8% to the highest level since 2018. They were followed by BBVA, which exceeded 10 billion euros, with an increase of 25%. CaixaBank was in third place with a growth of 20.2%, reaching 5.78 billion, surpassing the record set after its merger with Bankia. Other banks that also stood out were Sabadell, with record results of 1,8 billion, and Bankinter, which increased its profit by 13%, reaching 953 million. Unicaja was the bank that increased its profit the most, with an increase of 115%, reaching 573 million euros. Analysts state that at the beginning of the year, with 4% interest rates, clients were having to pay an increased amount for mortgages and loans. When the rate halved towards the end of the year this was offset by more people taking on a mortgage or loan. Also, the interest rate on deposit accounts continued to be low. The special government tax on banks generated 1.5 billion euros in 2024 but it has been redesigned for 2025 and will be applied progressively, with rates varying between 1% and 6%, depending on net interest income and commissions.
Last month we explained how some countries in the EU had not met the target of increasing defence spending up to 2% of GDP in the ten-year period from 2014 to 2024. Only 23 of the 32 states are achieving the 2% or more. Spain is an example of this and has one of the lowest percentages of only 1.28% with a prediction of not reaching 2% until 2029. A new target that may be agreed by NATO later this year is 3%. At the start of February, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that she considered that fiscal rules could be relaxed. This would free up more money because the investments in defence needed to be increased in view of the fact that Europe is experiencing “extraordinary moments” due to the urgency posed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A relaxing of fiscal rules in EU states took place when the COVID-19 pandemic became such a problem. As a temporary measure, the deficit limit of 3% was relaxed and the 60% debt limit that member states must comply with to avoid sanctions. President Trump maintains that defence spending in other NATO countries has to be 5%, but spending in the US is only 3.4% so 5% is an impossible and totally unrealistic target.
The availability of charging points for electric vehicles is a big factor that affects the sales. As with the MOVES III purchase scheme, the bureaucracy is a major stumbling block. Various different permissions have to be obtained and then the charging points have to be connected to electricity supplies. Delays go from 10 months in the best autonomous communities to 36 months in the worst ones. In all of Spain at the end of January, there were 38,700 public charging points in operation with 11,500 waiting to be put in operation. Of the 38,700 only 3,250 were the ultra-rapid type. In all of Andalucía there are 4,680 in use but 1,340 are not yet in use. Iberdrola have 20% of the total, Endesa 13% and Repsol 6%. Some electric car manufacturers have their own charging points such as Tesla that has 783. For electric car owners paying for the charge involves having an app with many different types. Normally, customers at petrol stations can pay with a credit card or cash.
While repairing a model Newcomen steam engine in 1764, James Watt was very critical of its waste of steam. In May 1765, after wrestling with the problem of improving it, he added a condenser that turned the steam back into liquid water. This condenser was separate from the cylinder that moved the piston, which meant that the engine was much more efficient. He entered into partnership with Matthew Bolton, an avid entrepreneur, who agreed to fund the development with a test of the new steam engine at Soho near Birmingham in 1768. The steam engine became one of the most important inventions of the Industrial Revolution.
Aluminium is made by refining bauxite ore into alumina (aluminium oxide) and extracting pure aluminium by electrolysis. Aluminium helped pioneer modern flight as it is strong but lightweight, weighing about one third of the weight of steel or copper. The Wright brothers made key parts of their biplane’s engine out of aluminium because no manufacturer could provide an engine light enough with the necessary horsepower. Recycling aluminium requires only 5% of the energy needed for extracting it from ore. Recycling a single drink can made from aluminium saves the energy needed to run a television for three hours.
Hourglass and water clocks had been around for centuries, but the first mechanical clocks began to appear in Europe toward the end of the 13th century. Initially, they were used in cathedrals, large churches, and monasteries to mark the time when services began. Clocks were very unusual and so expensive that only wealthy institutions and affluent people could afford them. As a time-telling instrument, they played increasingly important roles in the organisation of urban daily life and in coordinating activity. Clocks spread a new way of marking time based on equinoctial hours, easily measured by a mechanical clock.
Parrots in captivity can live up to 60 - 80 years, quite often outliving their owners. African greys are some of the most sought-after parrots for their very high intelligence and ability to speak. Considering most parrot owners seek out a parrot that has high capabilities of speech, it’s no surprise that African greys are as popular as they are. As a result, they tend to be reasonably priced when it comes to deciding to buy one. As for their personality, African greys are high maintenance parrots and quite messy, meaning they demand a lot from their owners. They are about 13 inches in length and have a weight of around 14 ounces.
On February 14th, 1876, at 9.30am Eliza Gray applied for an outline patent for his invention of a telephone at the Washington Patent Office. About 11.30am Alexander Graham Bell’s lawyer brought a full patent application for his telephone to the same patent office. On March 7th, 1876, Bell’s US patent for the invention of the telephone was granted as Eliza Gray was advised that his application was not detailed enough. Alexander Bell made the first telephone call on March 10th, 1876. His assistant, Tom Watson, was in another room and Bell spoke into his device and said, “Mr Watson, come here, I want to see you.”
The Earth is not a perfect sphere, but rather a “geoid”, which means it bulges at the equator. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), as the Earth spins, gravity pushes towards the centre of our planet (assuming for explanation’s sake that the Earth is a perfect sphere), and a centrifugal force pushes outward. However, since this gravity-opposing force acts perpendicular to the axis of the Earth, and the Earth’s axis is tilted, centrifugal force at the equator is not exactly opposed to gravity, so the forces do not cancel each other which creates the bulge.
President Trump has confirmed his opposition to renewable energy, in favour of producing more oil and gas. It is true that US crude oil production in 2024 reached an all-time high, and they dominate the world market in producing Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). He has overturned the Biden policy of promoting renewable off-shore wind energy and the plan for 50% electric vehicles by 2030. As was expected, he also withdrew from the 2015 Paris Climate Change agreement.
In contrast, a report on the ramifications of the EU adopting the 2019 ‘Green Deal’ policy introduced by Ursula von der Leyen concludes that it has been an overwhelming success. The ‘Ember’ report compiled by a group of independent energy experts states that “the EU is reaping the benefits of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and has saved 59 billion euros since 2019. This amount corresponds to the value of gas and coal that the EU would have had to import since 2019 if wind and, above all, solar generation capacity had not been expanded in this period.”
Before the ‘Green Deal’, in 2018, fossil fuels generated 39% of the EU’s electricity, but in 2024 this fell to 29%. In the same period, renewable energy sources have gone from 34% to 47% so almost half of the EU’s electricity is already generated by solar, wind and hydro technologies. Nuclear energy also contributes to the avoidance of using fossil fuel, about 25% in Spain, although the five nuclear power stations are currently planned to be shut by 2035.
The most spectacular increase in 2024 has been solar energy which for the first time provided 11% of the EU demand, surpassing the 10% from coal. The report highlighted the 21% of energy generated from solar last year in Spain, almost double the EU average, with the highest growth in the EU for the second year running. Also, in Spain last year, only 1.1% of energy came from coal that will fall to nil this year. The 17% from wind power in 2023 and 2024 in the EU generated more electricity than the 16% from natural gas.
The report stressed that “Trump’s return also strengthens the case for Europe to continue its campaign to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. In its efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy, the EU increased dependence on US LNG gas.” The conclusion is that “the only structural solution to improve both energy access and energy security in the EU is to continue with the transition for clean and cheap EU generated renewable energy”.
At the Davos Forum in January, António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, repeated the objective that there will be no turning back from the energy transition. In his opinion, the end of the fossil fuel era is “inevitable, no matter how much vested interests including Trump, try to stop it.” Referring to the pressure of the oil and coal sector against solar and wind technologies he stated that “the cheap and abundant energy provided by renewables represents an extraordinary economic opportunity, something that will benefit people in all countries.” In addition, the UN Secretary General was convinced that all the oil and gas reserves that exist in the world will never be needed, because fuel from their combustion will eventually be replaced by renewables.
The Ember report is optimistic and considers that Ursula von der Leyen and the European Commission have “a clear mandate to continue implementing the ‘Green Deal’ that makes energy more affordable for all Europeans, providing a secure supply that is resilient to foreign influences.”
In January 2003, Carboneras town hall gave a building licence to the promotor Azata del Sol to build a 21 stepped-storey hotel with 422 rooms, and work started. The hotel became known as ‘El Algarrobico’ which was the land name. The promotor intended to build more hotels there and a large urbanisation.
In 2006, after Greenpeace “discovered” the 95% complete hotel and interviews were being held for staff, a judge in Almería paralysed the construction. Part of the reason was that it invades the maritime boundary which is the distance from the sea where building is not allowed. The architect considered the boundary line was 20m and the building does not encroach on the 50m boundary. He states there was no indication that the boundary, on a different map, was 100m.
Since then, nothing has happened to the hotel except Greenpeace have twice painted ‘HOTEL ILEGAL’ on the façade. Carboneras residents painted out the letter ‘I’ both times so the slogan read ‘HOTEL LEGAL’. Over the years there has been as many as 40 court cases, some of them contradictory. In 2011 central government announced that they would demolish it and clear the site, at the current cost of 7 million euros, and the Junta de Andalucía would restore the land to the original state. The necessary work is stated to provide 400 jobs.
In 2022 a court ruled that the hotel was “plainly legal” until the building licence was revoked. Continual pressure has been put on Carboneras town hall to nullify the licence which they have never done for a variety of reasons. At one stage, they stated that this was because there was no municipal architect. The current mayor states that their legal position is very complex and they are still studying this. Last December, the Andalucía High Court issued an “ultimate instruction” that the licence was cancelled. For some time, Greenpeace have been asking the Andalucía High Court to fine the town hall 700
euros for every 20 days that the licence is still in force, but so far this has not been done.
On Monday, February 10th, María Jésus Montero, the Spanish Minister of Finance, flew into Almería and was taken to the hotel. She announced that central government was expropriating 40% of the land, the area of the 100 metres maritime boundary infraction. She asked that the Junta de Andalucía, which are responsible for the other 60%, should issue their own expropriation proceedings so that demolition could begin quickly, unless there were more legal delays. The Junta replied that they would side with central government, but they thought this was the wrong way of doing it and fraught with difficulties. They consider that Carboneras town hall has to revoke the building licence and this is the best way forward. The mayor of Carboneras complained that he had not been told that María Jésus Montero was coming to the hotel and this was disrespectful!
10 years ago, the Junta tried to buy the land for the original purchase price of 2.3 million euros but Azata del Sol refused to accept the money. They have an independent assessment of the value of the hotel as it stands and are asking for 70 million euros including some for “damage to their reputation”. This January, they asked the Andalucía High Court to award them the money if the building licence is annulled. Carboneras town hall are extremely worried that if they do this, they may be liable for some compensation. What will happen next is still completely unclear after 22 years!
Lastmonth, we explained how Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, has published a range of regulations to make renting a property easier and cheaper. One of these was a 100% increase in tax for some non-EU / non-resident buyers. He quoted figures from 2023 that claim that non-EU / non-resident buyers bought 27,000 properties to rent out or as an investment, as opposed to ones purchased to live in or for use as a second home.
How this tax would work, on what basis, and how it could be levied are entirely unspecified at present. There are two types of taxes, and one of them varies in each autonomous community which can set their own rates on the purchase of a second-hand property.
With a new property purchase, the buyer has to pay 10% IVA (VAT) and this is a fixed rate. Tax experts state that the IVA rate applied nationally cannot be modified, so the changes can only apply to second-hand properties. In Andalucía, a property transfer tax has to be paid that used to vary between 8 and 10% but is now fixed at 7%. In addition, stamp duty has to be paid that used to be 1.5% but has come down to 1.2%. The transfer tax varies in Spain from 6% in Madrid to 13% in the Balearic Islands. Current opinion is that as this is an autonomous community tax, communities could decide to do nothing and not put them up by 100%. Some of them, including Andalucía, are run by the PP political party not the PSOE party who have proposed the changes, so these autonomous communities could veto the increases for political reasons.
Analysts have been looking at the figures for property purchases, and notaries know the number of square metres and the cost of properties that are detailed on the ‘escritura’ (title deed) when a sale takes place. Figures from notaries that include the third quarter of last year are that 8,476 properties were bought by non-EU / non-resident buyers, only 1.7%. Pedro
Sánchez cites 27,000 purchases in 2023 but figures from notaries are that only 17,200 sales were recorded.
Up to the end of September last year, domestic buyers, so residents in Spain, paid an average of 1,659 euros per square metre but non-resident Brits paid an average of 2,500 partly because of purchases in coastal areas. A real estate analyst considers that the price and type of properties that apply to non-EU / non-resident purchasers are not ones that the average renter in Spain could afford, so are not relevant.
Brits would be the ones that could be affected the most, by sheer numbers. In 2023 they bought 7,400 homes and by the third quarter of 2024 the total was 3,480. All the purchases by other non-EU / non-residents only came to 9,800 in 2023.
One very large real estate company in Spain states, “It remains to be seen whether Pedro Sánchez will really try to push through such a complex change in law, considering the difficulties that this would entail. In fact, it could be challenged in the Spanish or EU High Courts as being an illegal discrimination.” The property department of Ibercaja are of the same opinion, “The challenges of trying to introduce this regulation is as complex as the problem to be solved. The technical and legal viability of the proposal raises serious doubts.” The general opinion of many experts is that it will be quietly dropped before the main changes are put before parliament for approval.

Following on from the resounding success of their recent production, Agatha Crusty and the Village Hall Murders, The Indalo Players are now arranging auditions for the awarding winning The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which featured Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy. This is a story set in Bangalore and is about some British retirees who decide to outsource their retirement to exotic and less expensive India. Lured by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and imagining a life of leisure in lush surroundings, they arrive and find that the Marigold is actually a shell of its former self! Though their new home is not quite what they had imagined, the retirees find that life and love can begin again when they let go of their pasts.
Auditions will be held on Saturday, 15th March at the Espacio Cultural Theatre in Los Gallardos, 13:3017:00. Rehearsals start end of May for 5 weeks, then a summer break, resuming at the end of August. There will be 5 performances mid-October. The Indalo Players especially need some younger folk to audition for the “call centre” scenes but welcome anyone to come along and audition for what we think will be an amazing production. For further details please email the Directors, Janet Franklin or Jane Jordan Read on happidog13@gmail.com or Jane.mojacar@gmail.com for a digital script. Visit their website at www.indaloplayers.es
Press release from Mojácar Town Hall
Mojácar Council has announced the imminent opening of the municipality’s first dog beach on Perulejo beach, a project that will be completed in 2025 in response to the growing demand for public spaces adapted to pets. This initiative reinforces Mojácar’s commitment to family and sustainable tourism, consolidating its position as a pet-friendly destination in Almería province.
Mojácar, with its picturesque old town, its beaches with crystal clear waters and its privileged climate, has become one of the main tourist destinations in the Levante region of Almería. In 2024, the municipality received close to 800,000 visitors, with a notable increase in the arrival of national and international tourists. British tourism in particular has shown a special interest in the locality, representing approximately 20% of the total number of visitors, according to data from the Andalucía Institute of Statistics and Cartography.
The designation of Perulejo Beach as a dogfriendly area makes Mojácar the second municipality in the Levante region of Almería to offer a beach specifically for dogs, following the example of Cuevas del Almanzora. This new space will have specific facilities to guarantee a comfortable and safe experience for both animals and their owners, including showers adapted for dogs, rubbish bins with bag dispensers and shaded areas.
The Mayor of Mojácar, Francisco García Cerdá, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “This dog beach not only responds to a need of our residents, but also broadens our tourist offer, attracting a growing segment of visitors who travel with their pets.”
The opening of the dog beach will not only benefit residents, but is expected to boost the local economy. Mojácar has a wide range of accommodation, from luxury hotels to holiday apartments, many of which are already petfriendly. The inclusion of a dog beach could increase hotel occupancy in low seasons, attracting tourists looking for pet-friendly destinations.
The Costa de Almeria has stood out in recent years for its versatility and for offering tourist alternatives for all types of people. Mojácar, with its Mediterranean charm and its commitment to quality tourism, continues to add attractions to consolidate itself as a benchmark destination.
Perulejo beach, with its new configuration, will not only become a gathering point for animal lovers, but also an example of how tourism development can go hand in hand with inclusion and sustainability.
The Vithas Group has hospitals in Alicante, Almeria (Virgen del Mar), Barcelona, Castellón, Granada, Gran Canaria, Lleida, Madrid, Malaga, Seville, Tenerife, Valencia, Pontevedra and Álava where its 12,500 professionals attend to 5.5 million patients. They have suggested to Vera town hall that a hospital could be built on Vera Playa. Pedro Rico, their General Director, has told the council, “We can make a significant difference in the health and well-being of the citizens of Vera, and our experience and resources could be of great value for the development of this project.” He has also floated the idea of “possible forms of public-private collaboration”.
Vera Council is carrying out a comprehensive plan for reforestation, with the planting of more than 700 different tree and shrub species in parks, avenues and urban areas. The mayor, Alfonso García, explained, “This initiative aims to improve the image of the town and optimise the conditions of our gardens and green areas, ensuring a friendlier and more sustainable environment”. He pointed out that the benefits of trees, included improving air quality, absorbing CO2, generating shade and helping to regulate temperatures.

In a hospital waiting room relatives were waiting for a doctor to come and see them as their family member was gravely ill. Eventually, a surgeon came in looking extremely tired and sombre. “I’m afraid I am the bearer of bad news, the only help for your loved one at this moment is a brain transplant. I’ve done one before, but it’s risky and somewhat experimental and you have to pay for the brain yourselves”. The relatives were stunned as they absorbed the news, but eventually one asked, “Well, how much does a brain cost?”. The surgeon replied, “5,000 dollars for a male brain and 500 dollars for a female brain”. The men in the room looked sideways at each other and tried not to grin. One of them, unable to stay silent any more asked the question everybody was thinking, “Why is a male brain so much more expensive?” The surgeon replied, “It’s just hospital standard pricing procedure. We can’t ask 5,000 dollars for a female brain because it has been used a lot.”
I was visiting a friend who could not find her cordless phone. After several minutes of searching everywhere, her young daughter spoke up. “You know what they should invent? A phone that sits on a base so it never gets lost.”
A man walking down the street noticed a small boy trying to reach the doorbell of a house. Even when he jumped up, he couldn’t quite reach it. The man decided to help the boy, walked up to the porch and pushed the doorbell. He looked down at the boy, smiled and asked, “Do you want me to wait until they open the door?” The boy answered, “No, now we run like crazy!”
A golfer is standing over his tee shot for ages, continually looking at the distance and figuring out the wind direction. He is driving his partner nuts. Finally, he said to him, “What on earth is taking you so long? Just take the goddam shot!”
The first golfer looked up and replied, “My wife is sitting outside the clubhouse watching me. This needs to be the perfect shot!”. His partner replied, “Forget it man, you’ll never hit her from here!”
A guy sees an advertisement in a pet-shop window: “Talking Centipede 100 dollars.” The guy goes in and buys it. He gets home, opens the box and asks the centipede if he wants to go for a beer, so he can show it to all his friends. The centipede doesn’t answer, so the guy closes the lid, convinced he’s been swindled. Thirty minutes later he decides to try again. He raises his voice and shouts, “Do you want to go for a beer?” The centipede pokes his head out of the box and says, “Pipe down! I heard you the first time. I’m putting my shoes on!”
A man went into his church one evening and asked the priest to hear his confession. The priest asked what he had to confess and the man said he had committed adultery three times with a married woman. However, he didn’t thing he was the only one as her husband was away a lot. The priest told him that adultery was a serious sin and he had to know the woman’s identity and whether she was one of his parishioners. The man didn’t want to do this but eventually he said, “It was Mary Jones.” The priest said that he knew who she was and the man had to say three Hail Mary’s and the Lord’s Prayer to get absolution. Just before the man left the confessional the priest asked, “Is she normally home all day?”
Two bored casino dealers were waiting at the craps tables for players to arrive when a gorgeous blonde lady wearing a huge fur coat walked in and asked if she could bet twenty thousand dollars on a single roll of the dice. The dealers said, “Yes, she certainly could, no problem!” She then said, “I hope you don’t mind, but I’ll feel much luckier if I take off my coat.” With that, she took off her coat and she was wearing a very skimpy see-through blouse with no bra. The men looked at her intently as she leaned over the table, rolled the dice, and yelled, “Come on baby, come on!” She then jumped up and down, hugging each of the casino dealers while yelling “YES, I WIN! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT, I WIN!!” With that, she scooped up the bundles of 100-dollar bills, grabbed her coat and quickly left. The dealers stood there staring at each other dumbfounded, until one finally asked the other one, “What the heck, did you see her roll two sixes?” The other one answered, “I didn’t. I thought you were paying attention!”
Two blondes were in a supermarket parking lot trying to unlock the door of their Mercedes, because they had locked the key inside. It’s starting to rain and the top is down”.
A Kung Fu student asks his teacher, “Master, why does my ability not improve? I’m always defeated.” And the master, pensive and forever patient, answers, “My dear pupil, have you seen the gulls flying by the setting sun and their wings seeming like flames?”
“Yes, my master, I have.”
“And a waterfall, spilling mightly over the stones without taking anything out of its proper place?”
“Yes, my master, I have witnessed it.”
“And the moon, when it touches the calm water to reflect all its enormous beauty?”
“Yes, my master, I have also seen this marvellous phenomenon.”
“That is the problem. You are watching all this instead of training.”
A guy spots a sign outside a house that reads “Talking Dog for Sale.” Intrigued, he walks in. “So what have you done with your life?” he asks the dog. “I’ve led a very full life,” says the dog.
“I lived in the Alps rescuing avalanche victims. Then I served my country in Iraq. And now I spend my days reading to the residents of a retirement home.” The guy is flabbergasted. He asks the dog’s owner, “Why on earth would you want to get rid of an incredible dog like that?” The owner says, “Because he’s a liar! He never did any of that!”
