A Quieter Autumn
Aftera hectic August, tourists coming here in September reputedly spend more money as they don’t come here with children. With EU funding and money from the Junta de Andalucía, Mojácar now has a “Punto Limpia” (Clean Point) for various discarded items to be recycled. Ones that can be taken there include metal objects, wood, furniture, clothes textiles and shoes, electrical and electronic equipment and garden waste. It is behind the Platino Gym on the playa and is open from Monday to Friday from 9am2pm. Residents are asked to make use of this facility and not put these items in the normal grey waste containers.
The DGT (Spanish Traffic Department) and the government have published proposals that next year the drink and drive regulations will be considerable tightened. We explain the ramifications in an article, and all drivers in Spain including tourists have to observe national laws that include traffic laws of course. The Guardia Civil Police numbers are being substantially increased before the end of this year and also next January. Some of them will be tasked with the continuing work to catch the mafia bosses who carry drugs and people, and break up their infrastructure. Recently, several combined operations by various branches of the police have been extremely successful.
In an article we explain how Spain is working with other countries to try to stop illegal immigrants and encourage legal ones. It is considered vital that Spain attracts legal immigrants, particularly in the agricultural and textile sectors, and this is a good way to encourage them to come here. Employers pay into the Social Security system, productivity goes up and so does the GDP (Gross national Product) so this is a good outcome.
Figures have been published that give the number of people of all ages on the padrón (the official list of residents in each municipality) and how this relates to Mojácar. At the end of
2023 there were 101 more non-Spanish people living here compared to Spanish nationals and we expand on the figures in our ‘In the News’ section.
Town halls and concert and theatre companies have started to expand their activities and we feature ones that may be of interest to our readers in our ‘What’s On’ section. The ‘Almería Western Film Festival’ in Tabernas starts on October 10th and is considered a prestigious event reinforcing Almería as being the “Land of Film”. There is a steady stream of directors who choose our province to make films, documentaries and commercials. We have details of the Western Film Festival in our ‘In the News’ section.
Saturday, October 12th is a national fiesta day in Spain now called ‘Día de la Hispanidád’ (Hispanic Day). It used to be called ‘Christopher Columbus Day’ but whether he was actually Spanish, Italian or Portuguese is still not completely decided. He was accused of being very cruel to prisoners, so naming this day in his honour was dropped. October 12th is also the religious fiesta of ‘Nuestra Señora del Pilar’ (Virgin Mary of the Pillar) who is the patron saint of the Guardia Civil police. Turre have a fiesta from Friday, October 4th until Monday October 7th and in Mojácar, Monday, October 7th is the day of their patron saint ‘Virgen de Rosario’ . Wednesday, October 31st is Halloween and November 1st is ‘All Saint’s Day’ a national fiesta to remember family and friends who have died, and cemeteries are decked out with flowers and candles. November 2nd is ‘All Souls Day’ to remember all the dead. Clocks go back one hour at 3am on Sunday, October 27th.
In the News
Mojácar Medical Centre
The new Mojácar medical centre near the petrol station on the way up to the pueblo is now up and running. The new centre has several new facilities such as x-rays, physiotherapy rooms and a children’s department, an accident and emergency area and the ability to carry out minor surgery. Appointments can be made in the normal way: in person, ringing Salud Responde on 955 545 060, on their app ‘Salud Responde’, or via ClicSalud+ on the Junta de Andalucía website.
The ‘Moves’ Schemes
The Spanish schemes for subsidies in the purchase of all-electric and hybrid cars are known as ‘Moves’. The Moves III scheme in Andalucía was supposed to have finished last July, but was extended until December 31st as there was still money in the pot. A buyer of an all-electric car costing less than 45,000 euros can apply for a 7,000 euro grant if they scrap a car that is over seven years old, or 4,500 euros if they don’t. There are pro-rata amounts with a maximum of 4.500 euros for hybrid ones, larger grants for vans, and a 70% grant towards the cost of installing a charging point. You have to pay the full price of the vehicle and then claim the grant money, and if you are scrapping a car you have to have been the owner for more than 12 months. Motor manufacturers and dealers criticise the scheme because they consider that a person buying a new vehicle will not have one that is seven years old or older, so they can’t claim the maximum grant. Also, after buying the new vehicle the purchaser has to make a claim which in some cases can take between 12-24 months. Dealers want the discount to be given at the point of sale and taken off the purchase price then, so they claim it back with a much quicker time period. Since June 2023, if a person buys an all-electric vehicle costing no more than 54,450 euros (45,000 + IVA) they can include up to 3,000 euros when they do their annual ‘Renta’ (income tax return). The 3,000
euros comes off the total income so the bottom line of tax owed should be reduced, depending on individual circumstances. However, the grants, according to the ‘Hacienda’ (Spanish Tax Authority), count as being hidden capital gains income so they have to be included and will be taxed! ‘Sumauto’ (an automobile portal) state that four out of ten purchasers of electric vehicles have an income over 3,000 euros per month, so they don’t need a grant, and shouldn’t qualify for one! They propose that a Moves IV scheme focuses on people who have an older car because the average age of vehicles in Spain is more than 15. They consider that the grants should be more money for a person who has a car that is more than 10 years old. They also suggest that the 21% IVA (VAT) should be scrapped for a vehicle costing less than 25,000 euros. They stress that reducing the average age of cars in Spain is a vital necessity and the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) are also very concerned about the average age. Another idea is a grant for cars that have the emission ‘B’ or ‘C’ stickers towards converting them to all-electric ones that costs on average about 15,000 euros.
More ‘AVE’ Doom and Gloom
Last month in an article, we commented on the progress of the AVE High Speed train from Murcia to Almería and its likely finish date. Whilst the government have been reassuring people that passengers will be able to board the trains during 2026, Adif (the Spanish rail authority) had not given their own completion date. At Lorca, after a very long period of wrangling, it was finally agreed that in the city centre, where the station will be built, there will be a 3km double track width tunnel. Adif finally approved a contract for this work last February, but the initial completion of the tunnel and station, that will cost 400 million euros, has now been given as taking 32 months with a finish date of May 2027. There are many technical challenges and the tunnel needs to go under a small river
In the
that will be diverted until it is finished. The Almería pressure group ‘Mesa del Tren’ have been forecasting the earliest arrival of trains to be 2028 for some time, which may turn out to be too optimistic! As we mentioned last month, when all the work has been completed there will be an extended period of testing over the 200km line. The ‘PP’ political party in Almería city are asking questions in the Spanish Parliament regarding the exact progress of the work on the AVE including the stations at Almería, Vera and Lorca. They want technical certifications from ‘Adif’ of all the sections under construction. They point out that the Minister of Public Works visited Almería a few weeks ago and his promised completion date was obviously a lie! In mid-September, The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, dismissed the president of Adif, Ángel Contreras, with the aim of “Promoting the management of the company”. Ángel Contreras has been the President for less than 12 months and apart from conflicts in policy there have been major disruptions of many of the trains during the summer months with frequent delays and cancellations.
More Guardia Civil Police
Pedro Fernández, the government delegate in Andalucía, has announced that in October, the Guardia Civil police numbers in the whole of the community is to be increased by 840, with 118 in our province. These are police officers going through their final training and will be drafted in for an initial period of 40 weeks. Next January, 640 extra police will join the existing numbers with 400 more on general duties, and an additional 240 for special duty such as catching the Mafia drug and people smuggling. 17.5 million euros has been given to police and customs agents in the Campo de Gibraltar region this year and up to the end of June 3, 126 people have been arrested, 340 tonnes of drugs seized, and 120 semi-rigid
craft captured. The ‘AUGC’ union has expressed their satisfaction with the additional numbers and pointed out that this time of the year it is easier to find accommodation. However, they complain that there is a forced retirement at age 58, not voluntary, that is the case in many other organisations. They point out that with voluntary retirement, the ones that stay on would help keep overall numbers up.
Museum Admission Charges
Due to come into force in August and then October, admission charges for museums in Andalucía have been put off sine die “to do it correctly” at a future date. The Ministry of Culture led by Patricia de Pozo who has just taken over this role has stated that “Two basic issues must be guaranteed”. Namely “that the economic situation of Andalusians is not an impediment to access any cultural space” and that “everything that is collected reverts to the maintenance of equipment, cultural infrastructures and our culture”. Admission charges of two, four and six euros were announced with an anticipated income of 8 million euros per annum. The agreement proposed maintaining free access for all visitors four days a month, free of charge for users under 18 years of age, those over 65, people who are legally unemployed, and those who are affected by a degree of disability of at least 33% and needs a person to accompany them. There was a fierce reaction to the news of the charges as being a “tourist tax” and in general, museums should not charge anything, as they are a cultural heritage.
Organ Transplants
Spain has led the list of countries that provide organ donations and transplants for the 32nd year running. Up to the end of June, in hospitals in Andalucía, there were 600 transplants, with 154 liver, 359 kidney, 58 lungs, 22 heart and 7 pancreas transplants, 6.4% more than last
In the
year from 246 donors, and 360 cornea and tissue transplants. In the three hospitals in Almería province, in the same period, there were 23 donated organs. In the UK people have to opt out of organ donations and in theory this applies to Spain as well. The reality is that following a death in a hospital, with two doctors certifying the death, transplant doctors talk sympathetically to the relatives to see if they will agree to organ donation. Over 50% do, and see it as a way of helping other people. It is possible to obtain a donor card from a doctor’s surgery but people need to discuss with their relatives if on their death they want to donate organs. The age group goes from young babies up to people over the age of 80. The transplant co-ordination centre is in Madrid, manned 24/7, and they have a “zero” list of people who are very likely to die within a few days without a rapid transplant.
Greenpeace Off the Hook
10 years ago, on May 11th, 2014, Greenpeace activists painted a huge black circle on the face of the El Algarrobico hotel in Carboneras leaving the unpainted slogan “Hotel Ilegal”. Azata del Sol, the owners of the nearly completed hotel, started legal action against Greenpeace for damage to the façade, windows and doors, but a judge ruled that as the building was supposed to be demolished there could not be any claim for damages. Azata del Sol had asked for a prison terms of 12 months, fines of six euros per day for 24 months and 186,700 euros in compensation. The decision to take no action was appealed and this court ruled that damage had been done and imminent demolition was not agreed. This September, in a court in Almería, 28 people, allegedly Greenpeace activists, had to appear but for various reasons they were all acquitted. The court ruled that many of the people from Greenpeace maintained they were there for a demonstration on the beach and did not enter the hotel, and the ones who were inside and did the painting could not be reliably
identified. When the Guardia Civil police asked everyone to leave and for identification for a possible criminal offence, this included some journalists who were in no way involved in the painting, and the number of people the police recorded as being there was not the same according to various officers. There were a large number of activists and Carboneras residents outside the hotel at the time. One of the people in court stated that he was a journalist and named the media outlet that he worked for at the time, with a letter stating that this was true. The court ruled that any convictions would be unsafe in law. On May 12th, 2014, disgruntled residents of Carboneras went to the hotel and painted out the letter ‘I’ so the slogan then read “Hotel Legal”! This was the second time they had done the same thing, when Greenpeace “discovered” the hotel interviews were being held for staff. Azata del Sol can appeal the latest court ruling if they decide to do this and they probably will do. A Greenpeace spokesperson stated, “Greenpeace considers closed ‘one more chapter in the organization’s fight for the demolition of the illegal hotel El Algarrobico’”.
Major Purchases by Lidl
The German supermarket chain Lidl bought produce from Almería province worth
In the News
900 million euros up to the beginning of September. 90% of this is distributed to Lidl supermarkets in other countries. The vast majority of the purchases are fruit and veg, including tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and red and citrus fruit, from over 100 suppliers. Purchases from all of Andalucía amount to 1.6 billion euros including fruit and veg, olive oil, milk products, cheese, wine and meat. Lidl came to Andalucía in 1994 and they now have 3,400 employees, 130 supermarkets and logistical centres in Granada, Seville and Málaga.
EU Immigrants
In an article we comment on how Spain is dealing with legal and illegal immigrants with funding from the EU. Although it is not yet in force, member states have agreed to a scheme whereby each of them takes an average quota of 30,000 refugees that have been accepted as being genuine asylum seekers. This takes the pressure off states such as Spain, Italy and Greece where immigrants are a huge problem. If member states do not agree with this, they have to pay 20,000 euros for each person on their quota which goes into a central EU refugee fund and this will be an annual amount of money. Some of the money would be given to countries where migrants setting off is a big problem such as Tunisia, to help combat this. Poland is not at all happy and want to be excluded, because they already have one million Ukrainian refugees. We have commented previously how Spain has set on more staff to process applications quickly, and Ursula von Leyden, the EU President, wants this time reduced to a maximum of 12 weeks in all the countries where there is a backlog. People who are not accepted would then be deported to their country of origin.
Unemployment and Work
People in work who are laid off by their employer are entitled to claim unemployment benefit if their employer has paid into the
Social Security system for one year, but you are supposed to be looking for work or retraining. Over the first six months the amount paid is 70% of your salary in the last six months of work and then 50% for another six months, but there is a maximum amount if you have had high earnings. Social Security payments are taken off the gross money you receive, which means you are still entitled to health care. An unemployed person receiving benefit can obtain part time work, but the hours you work affect your benefit. As an example, if you work for 50% of the normal working week your benefit is reduced by 50%. Some benefit is available to people who have not clocked up any social security payments and do not qualify for the normal unemployment rates. The Spanish government and unions have agreed a new scheme for 2025 whereby these people can be paid a salary for a normal working week at the same time. Earnings cannot exceed 1,350 euros gross per month with a progressive reduction in the unemployment benefit. The aim is that unemployed people are paid more money and they are encouraged to get back into the labour market.
ECB Interest Rates
From September 18th, the Central European Bank interest rate has been reduced to 3.5% that will help people with, or trying to obtain, a mortgage. The ECB stated that it remains “determined” to return inflation to the 2% target in the medium term and rates will remain at “sufficiently restrictive” levels for as long as necessary. Among the EU states, the largest increase in the cost of living in August corresponded to Belgium (4.5%), Estonia (3.4%) and the Netherlands (3.3%). On the other hand, the smallest increases were observed in Lithuania (0.7%), Latvia (0.9%) and Slovenia, Finland and Ireland (1.1%). In the case of Spain, the year-on-year rate moderated by half a point, to 2.4%, which reduced the
In the News
unfavourable price differential for our country with respect to the euro zone to two tenths.
Inflation in Andalucía
Andalucía is about to meet the inflation target set by the European Central Bank, set at 2%. The annual rate of increase in prices stood at 2.1% in August in the autonomous community, a single tenth above this target and two tenths below the year-on-year CPI National Institute of Statistics figures for the month of August of 2.3% in Spain as a whole. In the case of Andalucía, the retail items that fell the most were clothing and footwear, with a decline of 0.09% closely followed by transport, which fell by 0.08% compared to July. Food and non-alcoholic beverages have contributed the most to the increase in inflation in recent years, but fell by 0.06% in August compared to July. A tentative expectation is that inflation will fall again in September.
An Almería “Greek Island”
Greece is known for the white houses and the deep blue of the Aegean Sea, particularly in the Mykonos area. La Isleta de Moro in Cabo de Gata, a small fishing village in our province, has been singled out as being as being extremely similar and cheaper to go there! With less than 200 inhabitants it has retained its charm with crystal clear Mediterranean Sea. The name comes from
Berber pirates and their leader Mohamed Arráez. The main beach is Peñón Blanco, known for its soft sand and calm waters and a few minutes away is the Cala de los Toros, smaller and more secluded. There are various notable restaurants.
Lower Alcohol Limit
In an article we explain that the Spanish Government has announced that they intend to decrease the alcohol limit of 0.5gr/l down to 0.2gr/l for all drivers. 241 drivers lost their lives in Spain this summer and 50% were over the alcohol or drug limit. Guardia Civil Police carried out spot checks from August 19th-25th and found each day that more than 500 drivers were over the limit. The Centre for Toxicology has reported that postmortems on drivers killed in traffic accidents in 2023 revealed that 33% were over the limit. The DGT stress that drivers should not drink any alcohol at all.
The UK Tourist Travel Authorisation
The media in Spain (but it applies to all EU states eventually and many other countries) are pointing out that on April 2nd, 2025, Spanish nationals going to the UK have to have an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). They cost £10 or the euro equivalent of 12 euros, are valid for two years (unless their passport expires), with stays of no more than six months, and it applies to all visitors including babies and children. These authorisations can be obtained starting in March from the UK ETA app and tourists are advised to apply at least three days before they travel. In 2023, some 38 million tourists went to the UK with 2.2 million from Spain. The ETA requirement is already in force for some of the 83 countries that will be affected in due course. Spaniards in transit through the UK will also have to have an ETA.
Fishing Boat Sunk
On September 17th at 10.30am the skipper of the ‘Manuel and Gero’ fishing boat from
In the
Carboneras informed the Almería maritime coordination centre that their boat had sunk off the island of San Andres. They were returning to port when they collided with a very large object that they could not identify and the boat quickly sank. The three crew were rescued by another fishing boat and a private one. The Maritime Rescue centre in Almeria has issued warnings to sailors in the area that there is possibly a large object in the vicinity and a sunken fishing boat.
Repairing Electric Cars
The car portal ‘Autodata’ has surveyed garages that make general repairs and found that only about 20% are prepared to repair electric vehicles. This is partly because they do not have sufficiently qualified mechanics or the specialised tools, and some garages are very worried that if not properly handled the battery might explode. The conclusion of the survey is that general repair garages think that the main dealers of the manufacturer should repair the vast percentage of electric vehicles, not them. Also, as existing petrol or diesel cars (new or second-hand) can still be used on the road after the 2035 ban on new ones comes in, they are never going to run out of work.
Using Batteries
The use of batteries to store electrical energy is nothing new, but with increasing use of renewable energy and cutting down on CO2 emissions, modern batteries are in the forefront. The cost of large batteries has come down almost 50% in the last two years and is 90% less than ten years ago. In China, but not yet in Europe, electric cars are down in price to almost the same cost as a petrol engine car, because producing batteries is cheaper there. The use of batteries for renewable energy sources will mean less reliance on other types of fuels and stop another energy crisis such as the one in 2021-2023. A professor at Eindhoven University points out that photovoltaic solar
panels and wind farms will soon be able to supply 70% of energy requirements, and with batteries this will go up to 90%. In Spain, estimates are that before 2030 the electricity from renewable energy will be the equivalent of the output of five nuclear power stations which are due to shut. If energy from solar panels is stored in batteries for a few hours, from two to six, the energy can be supplied when the sun is not shining which will stabilise energy cost peaks and troughs. Households are already finding this out when their home solar panels are connected to a battery, which has been expensive to buy, but is becoming cheaper. The expensive lithium used in battery cells is being replaced with sodium at a fraction of the cost. Manufacturers are already making strides in increasing the storage capacity, reducing weight and voltage losses. At present, China has the two largest manufacturers of batteries for electric cars, but other countries are catching up. Analysts compare the boom in efficient battery manufacture to that of the computer chip. In the US in California, in the Mojave Desert, there is an installation of 1.9 million solar panels with 120,000 batteries that store energy for four hours to give cheaper electricity in the late afternoon or evening. With improved batteries they will be able to store the electricity for eight to ten hours. They can store 3,300 megawatts at present and one megawatt is one billion watts. The eventual aim is that 100% of energy needed in California will come from renewable sources by 2040. Investors are very keen to jump on this bandwagon by buying shares in the technology companies and experience good profits.
Almería Western Film Festival
In previous years information regarding the Almería Western Film Festival in Tabernas has been limited to a few days before it starts. This year the line-up has been announced in good time and the festival is from October, Thursday
In the
10th to Sunday 13th, inclusive. The Italian actor Fabio Testi will be given the ‘Tabernas de Ciné’ award 50 years after the filming of ‘The Four of the Apocalypse’. The ‘Spirit of the West’ award will go to Argentine director Lisandro Alonso and the legendary Italian director Sergio Leone (1929-1989) will receive the ‘In Memoriam’ award, for his creation of the spaghetti western. The Italian editor Eugenio Alabiso will be awarded the ‘Desierto de Tabernas’ prize for his work in the editing of western classics, and the Almeria writer and film historian José Enrique Martínez will receive the award for the ‘Dissemination of the Western Genre’. The festival’s Official Feature Film Section presents a selection of films that will compete for the jury and audience awards. The opening film will be Paradise, directed by Max Isaacson (USA) followed by Escanyapobres by Ibai Abad (Spain), Eureka by Lisandro Alonso (Argentina), and Hasta el fin del mundo by Viggo Mortensen (USA-Mexico-Canada). Other films include Nina by Andrea Jaurrieta (Spain), and Los de abajo by Alejandro Quiroga (Bolivia) and Ride by Jake Allyn (USA). There is a selection of 30 short films in this category
A Diverse Mojácar Population
Residents of any age in a municipality should go on the ‘Padrón’ which is the official list of inhabitants. Numbers determine services such as teachers, the police and health facilities and a padrón certificate is needed for various reasons. At the end of each year town halls have to send their current data to the Institute of Statistics who analyse them. As regards Mojácar, 50.67% are non-Spanish compared to 49.3% and the difference is 101 people. 18.92% (1,424) of the registered inhabitants were born in the municipality. 27.39% (2,061) have emigrated to Mojácar from different parts of Spain, 11.51% (866) from other municipalities in the province of Almeria, 4.89% (368) from other provinces of the community of Andalucía, 11.00% (828)
from other autonomous communities and 4,041 have emigrated to Mojácar from other countries. Of these people, there are 576 inhabitants, 250 men and 326 women born in America; 127 inhabitants, 72 men and 55 women born in Africa. 107 inhabitants, 58 men and 49 women born in Asia and 7 inhabitants, 2 men and 5 women born in Oceania. The rest come from the EU and six countries stand out among some thirty destinations featuring Romania (179); France (176); Germany (160); Argentina (148) and Italy (129). People on the padrón from the UK amount to 2,147.
More Talks in Gibraltar
The final post-Brexit agreement between Spain and Gibraltar has still not been signed. Pedro Sánchez recently met Sir Keir Starmer with the aim of solving the outstanding issues. The European Frontex border police will supervise Gibraltar residents having free movement into Spain and the EU by recognising that Gibraltar is a ‘Schengen area’. A sticking point is that Spanish police will be able to move freely in Gibraltar, in uniform and carrying arms. Spain wants flights from Gibraltar to Madrid and Barcelona that were in place from 2009-2011. Spanish politicians claim forcefully that the airport is on Spanish land! It has been agreed that the 15,000
In the
workers who come from Spain every day for work will not have to pass through any type of border control and their pension rights and pensions will slowly be increased to the same level as Gibraltarians. Spanish companies who falsely claim that their fiscal headquarters are in Gibraltar, not Spain, and pay less corporation tax as a result will no longer be able to do this.
IMIE Numbers
Every mobile phone has a unique identification IMIE (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number that can be accessed by putting *#06# into your phone. This gives you a very long 15-digit number, unique to your phone, that you should write down or photograph with another device. If the phone is stolen the IMEI number can be used by your service provider to block the phone from working, even if a different SIM card has been put in it, or the service provider has been changed. When you buy a new mobile phone the number is printed on the box and can be found in the Settings.
Causes of Death
An organisation in Andalucía collects information on the number of births, marriages and deaths. Their published figures from the last quarter of 2023 reveal that the total deaths in Almería province were 1,398, a slight fall in numbers compared to 2022. 758 males died and 640 females and 373 died from cancer, 344 from heart attacks or circulatory problems and 124 from respiratory problems. 15 men and 9 women died from Covid or post-Covid health problems. 35 women and 13 men died from Alzheimer’s disease and 12 people died after experiencing a fall. On the International Suicide Prevention Day, it was revealed that 73 people had committed suicide in our province in 2023 (53 men and 20 women), compared to 62 cases in 2022. Suicide attempts attended to in the three hospital emergency departments were 335 compared to 304 in 2022. In May
2022 a national dedicated mental health “Call for Life” 24/7 phone number, 024, was introduced for persons contemplating suicide, families worried about a family member, or a concerned partner. The free of charge number is available in several languages including English, and qualified people trained to respond to these calls from the Red Cross will try to help anyone by listening carefully for as long as is necessary (the average time was 11 minutes and the longest was 3hrs 30mins). They give advice and suggest alternatives including contacting health professionals, or as a last resort a call to the 112-emergency number if they consider a suicide is imminent and they have the location of the person. The calls are totally confidential and in 2023 a total of 203 people made use of this service in our province. Throughout Spain 4.6% of people who dialled 024 lived in Andalucía, the highest percentage of any autonomous community. The authorities in Almería announced that they would beef up the publicity for the 024 number and liaise with mental health professionals so that they could advise people to use the helpline if necessary.
Maui Founder Dies
The Mojácar Maui Beach website announced on September 7th that Kiko Rubia who founded the beach bar with his brother Luis over 20 years ago had died very suddenly, aged 52. Together they turned the initial beach bar into one of the most emblematic and fashionable establishments in Mojácar which attracts visitors from all over Spain and from many countries. The website stated, “Maui assures everybody that they will continue to move forward in honour of his memory and everything he built with so much love. Every day, when we open the doors, we will remember your smile and your legacy. ‘Kiko, all of us who know you agree on one thing, meeting you has been a gift in life. Thank you for everything, friend. You will always be in our hearts’’’.

The Mojácar Boat People Tragedy
On February 1st last year at midnight, a Guardia Civil patrol boat ‘Rio Jiloca’ intercepted a 5-metre inflatable boat overloaded with people, one nautical mile off the coast at Macenas in Mojácar. Orders for the boat to stop were ignored and attempts to avoid this resulted in it capsizing. In the ensuing chaos the police threw life jackets and lifebuoys into the sea for people to hold onto and several policemen went into the water. 11 people were rescued but two men aged 26 and 27 drowned because they didn’t know how to swim and attempts to revive them failed. Each of the 13 men on board from Senegal had paid 7,000 euros to set off from Algeria. Two men who had organised the journey were arrested, one of them steered the boat whilst the other one navigated and topped the engine up with petrol from containers. The men in the boat were told to put their mobile phones in Airplane mode and forbidden to take photos or videos. Appearing before a court in Almería at the start of September both men accepted prison terms of six years for offences of human trafficking for financial gain and involuntary manslaughter. They were ordered to pay 120,000 euros to the families of the men who died.
DGT Speeding Infractions
The DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) has reissued a table of excess speed fines and loss of points. Examples are that firstly, there is a fine of 100 euros but no loss of points if you are up to 20km/h over the speed limits, so up to 50km/h in a 30 km/h zone and up to 70km/h in a 50km/h zone. Above these speeds the limit with just a fine is up to 30km/h over the speed limit, so up to 120km/h in a 90km/h zone and up to 150km/h on a motorway with a speed limit of 120km/h. The next bands with a 200 euro fine and a loss of 2 points is 10km/h over the previous excess speed for speed limits of up to 50km/h and 20km higher than the previous excess speed for speed limits of 60km/h up
to 120km/h, so 151km/h to 170km/h on a motorway. Fines and a loss of points then go up to 4 and then 6 with a 600 euro fine when you are 50km/h over the speed limits of 20km/h to 50km/h that then increases up to more than 191km/h on a motorway. It is a criminal offence to drive at over 60km/h more than the urban limits and 80km/h over the inter-urban limit of 90km/h and 100km/h over a 120km/h limit. The penalties can be 3-6 months in prison or a fine from 6-12 months (worked out per day), or community service from 31 to 90 days, and driving licences will be taken away for between 1 to 4 years. In early September in Bacares above Albox, a motorbike rider was determined to be travelling at 153km/h in a 60km/h zone. He will appear in court in Purchena and will certainly be subject to these penalties. A few days later, in Seron, a car was being driven at 160km/h in another 60km/h limit. Fines are notified by post to the address of the registered owner and if paid within 20 days from the date you receive it there is a 50% reduction. The DGT stress that they never send out emails with a notification of a fine, and if you receive one that then takes you to a website, even if it looks like their own one, this is a complete scam aimed at getting details of your bank account. There is a small allowance in measuring excess speed by fixed or mobile radar cameras, but a motorist should observe the exact speed limits and not rely on this margin of error.
Amazon Scrap Home Working
The CEO of Amazon, Andy Jassy, has sparked a fierce backlash among employees after announcing they’ll now be required to spend five days a week in the office and can no longer work two days at home. It applies to all workers including 5,000 in Spain out of the total workforce of 25,000. Jassy sent a memo to staff on September 16th informing them of “a couple changes we’re making to further strengthen our culture and teams.” Part of
In the News
doing that he said, is returning to working in the office full time as was the norm before the Covid-19 pandemic. Explaining the move, he said: “When we look back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant.” The full time working in the office comes into force next January to allow staff to make necessary changes in their lifestyle. Jassy did note that if employees are “reasonably” unable to make their way into work, such as having children at home who are unwell, working from home remains as a backup option for a short period of time.
Combating Illegal Taxis
Police in Almería city go to the airport, the intermodal train and bus station and the port in Almería city periodically, to try and apprehend illegal taxis which have been a problem for many years. Juan Francisco Rojas, the spokesperson of the Vox political party in Almería city, has put forward a motion asking for a permanent police presence. He states that, “The permanent and continuous surveillance of the Local Police in the vicinity of the intermodal station, in front of the maritime station, and in the most touristic areas is needed to combat this illegal practice and dissuade the organised mafias that control this fraudulent business”. In addition, they urge the airport management to increase the presence of security agents. He concluded, “It is essential that these controls are permanent and not discontinuous, since the deterrence only works during the hours in which the police are present.” Drivers who are operating illegal taxis receive large fines and their vehicle is confiscated when police catch them. Legal taxi drivers point out that their taxis have to have periodic safety checks and passengers are covered by third party insurance in the event of an accident. Apart from illegal taxis not being subject to safety checks, passengers have no third-party insurance as the insurance policy (if they have one) prohibits their use as taxis.
Banco Santander Sponsors Formula One
Ana Botín, the Executive Chairperson and President of Banco Santander in Spain, has announced that they will become Retail Banking Associate Sponsors of Formula 1 next year, in a multi-year agreement. They have previously sponsored individual teams and the latest one is Ferrari that ends in December. The usual fee for this type of sponsorship is 20 million euros. The publicity and trackside advertising for Banco Santander is intended to help them in the US, as next year their linked internet banking company ‘Openbank’ is being launched there. In June 2017, Ana Botín was woken up by a phone call in the early hours of the morning from the President of the Central European Bank stating that Banco Popular would be declared bankrupt in a few hours and she agreed to buy it for one euro and bail them out! Currently, Santander exceeds 1.7 trillion euros in assets, 66 billion euros in stock market value, earned 11 billion in 2023 (its historical record) and has established itself as the leading Spanish bank with 168 million customers. It is one of the most important banks in the euro zone.
Madrid Bans e-Scooter Hire
In 2023, in an attempt to control the hire of e-scooters, Madrid gave permission for three online companies to each rent out 2,000 electric scooters. It has been announced that the contracts are not being renewed in October and no other licenses will be awarded. The authorities claim that the three companies Lime, Dott and Tier have breached their licence conditions, particularly regarding the safety of pedestrians, parking in non-designated areas, and insufficient insurance cover. Last year there were 300 e-scooter accidents in the Madrid community, with 187 injuries from minor to serious and 11 deaths. The ban follows on from similar bans in Paris and Melbourne. On September 5th in Almería city, a young lady on an e-scooter on a pedestrian
In the
crossing was hit by a car that then collided with another car. Unfortunately, she later died in the Torrecárdenas hospital. Last year, local police in Almería city talked to, or fined, 560 e-scooter drivers. The majority of the fines were for using them on pavements, along with wearing headphones and using mobile phones. In a small number of cases the owners had illegally modified the scooters so that they travelled over the legal limit of 25km/h.
No ‘ITV’ Sticker For Vintage Cars
Vehicles passing the periodic ITV (MOT) tests have to display a sticker that gives the year it is next due, and a punched-out indication of the month. The colours change each year and if police are watching vehicles at a road junction, they can immediately see which sticker is being displayed. The DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) have announced changes for vintage cars considered to be ones that date before 1964, and they don’t have to have the sticker on display. The periods between tests have also been changed. The frequency with which vehicles aged 30 to 40 will have to pass the ITV will be biennial (every two years), while for those aged 40 to 45 it will be triennial (every three years). Finally, vehicles that are more than 45 years old will need to be tested every four years. According to experts, 91% of historic vehicles circulate a maximum of 60 days a year,
which does not represent any large-scale risk. Regarding pollution and road safety, they rarely travel long distances or consume large amounts of fuel. Another reason given is a saving in the cost of the stickers, but this must be minimal!
Good Airport Numbers
So far this year, Almería airport has seen a significant increase in passengers and whilst September numbers are still being added up, during the first eight months of 2024, a total of 556,681 travellers passed through, an increase of 4.3% compared to the same period last year. This increase reflects a daily average of 2,281 people. The vast majority (553,918) travelled on commercial flights, and 309,851 did so to or from Spanish cities, while 244,130 opted for international flights. This distribution shows the balance between the domestic and international markets, with a preference for domestic destinations within Spain or the Islands that has gone up by 24.3%. In terms of operations, Almeria airport managed a total of 8,377 movements in the first eight months of 2024, of which 5,618 were commercial flights, 9.7% more than 2023. This figure highlights the airport’s increased activity and capacity to able to handle a growing volume of commercial flights. During August there were 94,604 passengers and 1,070 flights with 34,163 on domestic flights, while 59,752 travelled internationally. In terms of international destinations, the UK remains the preferred destination, with 31,234 passengers. Other prominent European destinations include Belgium (9,397 passengers), Czech Republic (5,331), Netherlands (3,425), Luxembourg (2,732), France (2,619), Portugal (1,703), Slovakia (1,493) and Poland (1,481). Ryanair are still claiming that unless Spain reduces airport taxes there are “other countries” that would like them to go there with cheaper taxes. However, they are not going to cut flights to Spain as it is such a large market from the UK in particular.
In
Too Many Tourists
2023 a total of 85,056,528 tourists were officially recorded as coming to Spain, the first time more than 85 million came here. This was 19% more than in 2022 and 2% more than in 2019, the pre-pandemic year that was a record number. The population of Spain at the end of 2023 was calculated to be 48.7 million, so there were 1.75 tourists for every resident.
‘Turespaña’, the official tourist body, predict that 2024 numbers may “well exceed” the 2023 total with an estimated total of 93-95 million. The projected income will be about 31.5 billion euros.
Income from tourists is obviously a very large motor of the economy but there is friction in various parts of Spain with claims that residents suffer in the high season and house prices go up because rented property prices for tourists force them up. It is claimed that young people trying to get on the property ladder find it very difficult, if not impossible, in many areas.
We have previously commented that at the end of April, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis MartínezAlmeida, announced that with “immediate effect” there would be no more authorisations for properties to be licenced for tourist accommodation. This ban will continue until a General Urban Plan for Madrid is agreed in the first quarter of 2025, and additional inspectors will compare rented properties advertised on websites with the list of legal ones and take action against the unlicenced ones. The government of Mallorca is freezing the numbers in hotel and rental accommodation at the present numbers of 412,000 legal beds with 308,000 in hotels and 104,000 in registered rented accommodation. The president, Llorenç Galmés, has ruled that the proposed increase of 4% to 430,000 in the next few years has been scrapped.
In Barcelona they have proposed sweeping regulations with the aim of closing all registered tourist accommodation by 2028. A team of 30 website crawlers, 27 inspectors and six lawyers has managed to reduce the number of unlicensed
apartments to “a very low figure”, according to the City Council. There have been 9,679 “cease and desist” orders and 10,500 fines. A company that let a large number of unlicensed apartments in the same block was fined 420,000 euros.
The new proposals are that owners of registered tourist properties can keep the income until 2028 (as a form of compensation) and in 2028 the licences will all lapse. The properties can then be let to people who need a home. ‘Apartur’, the Tourist Property Owners’ Association, claim that there are about 10,000 licenced properties but this is less than 1% of the housing stock, and the total of 50,000 tourists greatly contribute to the economy, spending a considerable amount of money at restaurants, shops, taxis and tourist attraction entry fees.
Politicians opposed to the new plan state that the mayor of Barcelona, Juame Collboni is being very clever. He is not proposing to shut the accommodation as such, but when the licences expire in 2028, they will not be renewed. Because of this, going to court will be difficult as there is no regulation that has been passed that can be subject to an appeal. The President of ‘Apartur’, Enrique Alcántara, states that they will consider taking the licence suspension proposal to the European High Court which will be a slow process, but they may have a good case. He points out that a previous ban on new registered tourist accommodation has not resulted in house prices coming down, as it is “market forces” that determine this.
So Now You Know...
The White House
The cornerstone of the “White House” was laid by George Washington on October 13th 1792 and was built mostly with slave labour. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, it was three stories tall with over 100 rooms designed by James Hoban. In November 1800 President John Adams and his family moved in. The building was first known as the “Presidential Palace”, then the “President’s House” and also the “Executive Mansion” but acquired the name “White House” about 10 years later. It was burned by British troops in 1814, reconstructed and reopened in 1817. It now has 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms and is on six levels.
Teddy Bears
In November of 1902, President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt was on a hunting trip in Mississippi while trying to settle a boundary dispute. His staff, trying to accommodate him, captured a Louisiana black bear cub for the President to shoot but Roosevelt set the cub free. A famous political cartoonist drew a cartoon depicting this and Morris Michtom, a toy store owner in Brooklyn, made a stuffed bear cub and exhibited it alongside the cartoon. He was besieged by customers wanting one so he and his wife started making hand sewn bears. Roosevelt gave his permission to call the bears “Teddy Bears”.
Vladimir Horowitz
Virtuoso pianist Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989) was born on October 2nd in Kiev, Ukraine, that was then part of Russia. He had lessons with his mother who was also a noted pianist. In December 1925 he went to Germany, ostensibly to study with Artur Schnabel, but he had no intension of returning to Russia. Horowitz gave his first US concert on January 12th 1928 in Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic orchestra playing Tchaikovsky’s Piano concerto no.1 with the British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham. In 1986, after a self-imposed absence of 60 years, he performed a concert in his native Russia.
The Swiss Army Knife
The Swiss Army Knife was officially registered in 1897 by Carl Elsener who called it the “Officers and Sports Knife”. Elsener was trying to create employment in the town of Schwyz in central Switzerland and manufactured a soldier’s knife that every army recruit was given. He then developed the lightweight pocket knife with six tools. Today the company he founded employs 950 people who produce 34,000 Swiss Army knives a day, with a variety of models. It was selected as standard equipment for NASA Space Shuttle Crew and has saved countless lives on exploration trips round the world, from the North Pole to Everest.
Yo-Yos
The yo-yo has enjoyed many periods of popularity throughout world history and is thought to be the second oldest toy in the world (after dolls). There are ancient Greek yo-yos made of terra cotta in museums in Athens and yo-yos are pictured on the walls of Egyptian temples. It was first patented in 1866 by James L. Haven and Charles Hettrich. A bellhop, Pedro Flores, from Santa Monica in the US started a company during the 1920s making wooden yo-yos and Donald F.Duncan bought this company in 1929 and later produced the first plastic versions. Flambeau Products Inc acquired this company in the late 1960s and own it today.
Toilet Paper
Seth Wheeler from Albany patented rolled and perforated wrapping paper in 1871. In 1877, Wheeler started the ‘Albany Perforated Wrapping Paper Company’ and began selling perforated toilet paper called “The Standard” on a roll and sold it in plain brown wrappers. In 1885, Oliver Hewlett Hicks patented his toilet paper and the manufacturing process, but in 1894 the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated Hicks patents in favor of Seth Wheeler’s 1871 patent. In 1935, the company ‘Northern Tissue’ advertised its toilet paper as “splinter-free”. By 1942, the first two-ply toilet paper was manufactured at St. Andrew’s Paper Mill in England, along with softer paper.
Spain’s Illegal Immigrants
Atthe end of August, Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, visited Mauritius, the second time in six months and also went to Gambia and Senegal. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, travelled to Senegal and to the Gambia at the end of June, and within a few days the Second Vice-President and Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz went there as well.
The aim of all these meetings is to cement a policy that applies to legal migrants and illegal ones. Since the end of 2023, Mauritius is the main departure point for 50% of illegal immigrants who come to the Canary Islands in wooden fishing boats that resemble large canoes. The mafia organisers buy them and each boat can carry up to 150 people. In one 24-hour period 1,500 people arrived, with another 500 the next day. Up to the end of August 21,500 people came to the Canary Islands from Mauritius and the other 50% came from southern Morocco, Senegal, Gambia and Western Sahara. From Senegal it is a perilous journey of 1,600km that takes 10-15 days. None of these people pass through border controls or other countries, unlike people who come into France from various countries to cross the English Channel.
12% of people who are employed and pay into the Spanish Social Security are foreigners, and in the age group of 18 to 23 years the number is higher than young employed Spaniards. 300,000 have regularised their situation by becoming legal since 2021.
In his meetings with the African heads of government Pedro Sánchez is signing agreements, with 50% of EU funding, so that would-be legal immigrants can be trained to have some skills where they live, and welcomed into Spain on a “circular system”. After a period of time working in seasonal work, particularly in agriculture or the textile industry, they will then go back to their country of origin. Pedro Sánchez stated that “The contribution of migrant workers to our economy is fundamental, bolsters Social Security income and for Spain, migration is wealth, development and
prosperity” and numbers suggested are 250,000 people. Spain already has circular migration agreements with Morocco, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina and Uruguay.
When Pedro Sánchez went to Mauritius last February he was accompanied by Ursula von Leydon, the President of the European Commission, who promised 500 million euros for aid and development schemes, and 200 million has already been allocated. This will be used to finance projects and investments in the renewable energy, green hydrogen, water and sanitation sectors. There will be a high-level meeting between Spain and the Mauritanian authorities in 2025 to review the situation and progress.
Another measure from September 1st is the requirement that Mauritanian citizens be in possession of an airport transit visa so they can transit through the international areas of Spanish airports. It will prevent citizens who need this transit visa from being able to apply for asylum.
The other side of the coin is that the EU pay for Spanish police and immigration employees to combat illegal migrants and there are 43 in Mauritius with four patrol boats, 14 all-terrain vehicles, a helicopter they can call in if needed, and an ocean-going ship. The aim is that the authorities from Mauritius are alerted and collect and return the people setting off, or break up the Mafia bosses who usually operate near the coast. There are almost an identical number with the same resources in Senegal with a permanent helicopter and a surveillance aircraft if needed, and a smaller number of specialists in Gambia.
“White Gold”
There are 1,600 lorry journeys a day taking ‘yeso’ (gypsum) to Garrucha port and then returning to Sorbas for another lorry load, officially between 7am and 8pm. The open cast mine at Sorbas is the fourth largest in the world after mines in the US, China and Iran, and by far the largest in Europe, with expectations that there is gypsum for at least 80 years. Altogether, with yeso from two smaller mines taken to the Almería port, the total annual tonnage is 9.2 million tonnes, 70% of the total tonnage mined in Spain, with 7.6 million tonnes from Sorbas. The profitability of the gypsum exports that are stated to bring in 80 million euros per annum is described as being “Oro Blanco” (White gold). As a comparison, the major exports of fruit and veg from producers in Almería province only amount to 3.8 million tonnes per annum.
The gypsum was first mined in 1973 when the company Vilovigips determined from test excavations that it was high grade and very pure with large crystals, and at present the Saint Gobain French company and the Torralba company from Murcia own the mines. Because the lorry journeys to Garrucha, Almería and Carboneras ports are relatively quick this increases the profitability. The extraction, lorry transport and loading of the ships gives employment to 700 people. The Torralba company has been authorised to build a 316m jetty at the Carboneras port with a delivery and loading area of 55,000m2, a dredged sea area of 15,000m2, and an anticipated 300 ships each year.
Ships take the gypsum to France, the UK, the US (it is better quality than the gypsum mined there), Holland, Belgium, Venezuela and Germany which are the principal destinations. The main use is in the construction industry after it has been turned into plaster, an additive used in the production of cement at Carboneras, in agriculture, dental moulds, and toothpaste!
At the beginning of September there were 9 ships moored off the Garrucha port waiting to be loaded as delays were caused by storms and high seas.
The lorry journeys cause delays with other traffic, particularly when large numbers of tourists arrive in the summer months. A long time ago a dedicated 8km stretch of new road was proposed to take the traffic off the Los Gallardos to Garrucha road, and this is still on the cards with a completion date of 2028 and a budget of 8.1 million euros.
Residents of the Las Marinas Vera-Garrucha residential areas are not happy and complain that balconies and cars often have a coating of gypsum, and the lorries arrive outside the official hours of 7am to 8pm. At Almería port large screens have been installed to stop dust spreading and they want them to be installed in Garrucha. Devices at the port measure the gypsum dust suspended in the air and the residents claim that it is “usually” higher than the permitted level of 300 microgrammes per m3. The ‘Defensor del PuebloAndaluz’ is a body that adjudicate complaints from organisations or members of the public and can issue legal requirements following investigations. The residents have written to this body stating that infractions of environmental regulations are a danger to health. They also complain that to shorten the journey time the lorries ignore the 20km/h speed limit creating excessive noise.
Visiting the Los Yesares centre in the Sorbas Natural Park is very popular, with information about the geology of the area and guided tours of amazing caves. There is a website: https://www. cuevasdesorbas.com/es or tel: 950 364 563, open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-2pm.
Down to 0.2 gr/litre of Blood?
Thereis no dispute that driving under the influence of alcohol can result in injury or death for the driver, passengers, pedestrians and other vehicle occupants. In 2023 there were 1,800 fatalities on roads in Spain, 35% attributed to drink-driving and 57,100 convictions for driving over the limit. There are differences in how alcohol affects driving that include gender, age (worse for people below 18 or over 65), drinks with a meal, metabolism (the rate your body uses energy), stress levels, the time of day (night time is worse), driver skill, road types and surfaces, and alcohol types.
Countries cannot take all these factors into consideration so they use a mathematical amount, the Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). In Spain, at present, the limit for normal drivers is 0.5 grammes of alcohol per litre of blood (gr/l), equivalent to 0.25 milligrams per litre (mg/l) of exhaled air from a breathalyser test. For novice drivers in the first 24 months and for professional drivers, the limit is 0.3gr/l so 0.15mg/l in air. These are well below the 0.8gr/l in the UK and US, but in some European countries the limit is 0.0gr/l and 0.2gr/l in Norway, Sweden, Poland and Estonia.
The DGT (Spanish Road/Traffic Department) have proposed that Spain comes down to 0.2gr/l for all drivers in 2025. Studies show that a deterioration occurs even at very low blood alcohol levels less than 0.2gr/l, with impaired processing, a reduced reaction time from feet and hands, the time the brain reacts to a danger seen by the eye, and undue increased self-confidence. Some drivers under the influence exhibit euphoria, aggressiveness and reckless behaviour including road-rage. Many people think that regular drinking gives them an increased tolerance, but research has shown that this may be true for simple skills, but not complex driving.
The DGT has issued guidelines relating to the average weight of a person and their gender. They consider a beer of 330ml, gives a reading of between 0.21gr/l and 0.28gr/l for a man weighing
70 to 90 kilos, so over the new limit. One glass of wine results in a level of between 0.16gr/l and 0.2gr/l, similar to drinking a ‘Martini’ type drink served in smaller glasses. A shot of spirits is within the limit, normally between 0.13gr/l and 0.17gr/l but one “mixer” drink with 50ml of spirits is 0.25 gr/l to 0.32 gr/l. For a woman weighing between 50 to 70 kilos they cannot drink a 330ml beer which is 0.34gr/l to 0.48gr/l, and a glass of wine or a Martini type drink is 0.25gr/l to 0.34gr/l. A shot is around 0.2gr/l but one generous “mixer type” drink can go from 0.39gr/l to 0.55gr/l.
The Spanish RACE (RAC) organisation welcomes this new limit, and health professionals as well. They state that in Spain 20,000 deaths per annum are from alcohol related causes such as cancers, strokes and liver failure.
The proposed new limit is 33% less for new and professional drivers, a whopping 60% less for normal drivers and 75% less for UK tourists behind the wheel. Although not yet confirmed, this will probably mean a fine of 500 euros and a loss of four points from 0.1mg/l to 2mg/l, and a 1,000 euro fine and a loss of six points above 0.2mg/l to 2.4mg/l from breathalyser tests. Over this limit a person will be arrested and have to appear in court. Bars restaurants and drink manufacturers are not impressed and forecast a drop in the sales of alcoholic drinks and profit. The DGT stress, “Don’t drink and drive!”

Mojácar Celebrates the 10th Anniversary of its QR Audio Guides
Press release from Mojácar Town Hall Mojácar Council is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the implementation of its QR audio guides, an innovative initiative that has transformed the way visitors discover the rich history and cultural heritage of the municipality. Since its launch in March 2014, this tool has proven to be a resounding success, reaching more than 5,200 visits in 2024 so far this year, with a notable increase from May to July.
Among the most popular audio guides, the one on the Mojácar origin of Walt Disney stands out, its QR code having been scanned more than 1,222 times, making it the most requested content by tourists. In total, this resource has generated 3,773 events between views, audio and photo downloads, reflecting the widespread interest in this curious local legend.
Other points of interest, such as the old City Gate and the Santa María Church, have received 990 visits, closely followed by the legend of “Mariquita la Posá”, with around 900 views. The Public Fountain, Plaza Nueva Viewpoint and the Castle Viewpoint audio guides are also among the most explored places by tourists.
The Mayor of Mojácar, Fran García, underlines the importance of this project for the tourist promotion of the municipality: “Ten years ago we backed new technologies as a way of enhancing the value of our heritage, and the results have
exceeded our expectations. The audio guides have not only allowed visitors to learn about our history in a more accessible and attractive way, but they have also provided us with valuable data to continue improving the tourist experience of Mojácar.”
The QR audio guide system, available in four languages, allows visitors to easily access detailed information about the main monuments and local legends while going around the old town. In addition, the Mojácar Council Tourism Department has a platform that provides real-time data on the use of these audio guides, including statistics on visits, events and downloads.
Mojácar Council has also taken a further step towards tourism digitalisation, by incorporating augmented reality technologies and 360-degree images in 2022, offering an even more immersive experience. This progress has been possible thanks to the support of the Junta de Andalucía Regional Tourism Ministry as part of the plan to implement new technologies in tourist resources.
With this 10th anniversary, Mojácar reaffirms its position as a pioneer destination in tourism digitalisation, offering its visitors a unique informative and technological experience.

Jokes of the Month
The Eye
This guy is dining alone in a fancy restaurant and there’s a beautiful redhead sitting at the next table. He’s been sneakily checking her out ever since he arrived, but doesn’t have the courage to start talking to her. Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket toward the man. His reflexes kick in and he reaches out, plucks it out of the air, and hands it back to her. The redhead is mortified. “Oh my, I am so sorry,” she says as she pops her eye back into place. “Let me buy you dinner to make it up to you.” He joins her table and they enjoy a wonderful meal together. Afterwards they go to the theatre followed by drinks at a bar. They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he shares his. After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap. He says yes and they return to her place. He ends up staying the night. The next morning, she cooks him an enormous breakfast with everything he could have asked for. The guy is amazed at how everything has been so perfect, and how incredible this woman is. He can’t believe his luck. “You know,” he said, “You are the perfect woman, are you this nice to every guy you meet?” “No,” she replies, “You just happened to catch my eye.”
Too Much Tallking
Eight-year-old Nina brought her report card home from school.
Her marks were good…mostly A’s and a couple of B’s.
However, her teacher had written across the bottom: “Nina is a smart little girl, but she has one fault. She talks too much in school. I have an idea I am going to try, which I think may break her of the habit.”
Nina’s dad signed her report card, putting a note on the back: “Please let me know if your idea works on Nina because I would like to try it out on her mother.”
The Jigsaw Puzzle:
Joe lives next door to a slightly dotty old lady in her 90s named Mabel. One day Joe gets a phone call from Mabel and she says to him, “Joe, can you please come over and help me? I’ve got a complicated jigsaw puzzle and I can’t figure out how to get started.”
So Joe thinks for a second and then he asks Mabel, “What’s the picture meant to be when it’s finished, Mabel?”
“The picture on the box is a rooster,” Mabel responds. He’s busy but Mabel’s a dear old lady, so he decides to go over to help her. Mabel welcomes Joe and escorts him into her dining room where the box and its contents are all over her dining table.
Joe surveys the situation in front of him and then he turns to Mabel and says, “Mabel, I have to tell you, there’s no way we’ll be assembling these pieces into anything resembling a rooster.”
“Why’s that Joe?” Mable asks.
Joe smiles benevolently and then says, “Mabel, why don’t you make me a nice cup of tea.”
“OK Joe,” says Mabel with a smile. And then Joe sighs deeply and says, “While you’re making the tea, I’ll put all the Corn Flakes back in the box.”
Baseball
Two men were arguing about who was a bigger fan of baseball. One said, “I’ve been to every game this season!” The other retorted, “I named all my children after famous players!”
A third man, overhearing, interjected, “That’s nothing! I named my cat Umpire so every time he causes trouble, I can say, ‘You’re out!’”
Advice Needed
A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before. “You’ll get your chance in court.” said the Desk Sergeant. “No, no no!” said the man. “I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I’ve been trying to do that for years!”
Selling Coca-Cola
A salesman returns from his assignment in Saudi Arabia, where he went to sell them a new brand of Coca-Cola. Seeing his crestfallen face, a friend asks him, “Why the long face?” The salesman replied, “I failed in Saudi Arabia. The campaign was a total failure.” “Why is that?” asked the friend. “I thought you had a good campaign running.” “Well, when I got there, I was very confident that I would make a great sales pitch to the Saudis. But I had a problem—I didn’t speak Arabic. So I planned to convey the benefits of Coca-Cola with pictures on three posters side by side. First poster: A man lying in the hot desert sand in utter exhaustion; he has fainted. Second poster: The man is drinking the new Coca-Cola brand. Third poster: Our man is now totally refreshed, feeling great and jumping for joy. I had these posters pasted all over the place. You couldn’t go anywhere without seeing them.” “Terrific! That should have worked!” said the friend. “It should have,” sighed the salesman. “Only no one told me they read from right to left…”
The Husband
A husband and wife were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, and the husband asked his wife, “What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in our marriage?” She replied, “Never trust a man who promises to do the dishes.”
The Nudist Beach
Three men were at a nudist beach and it wasn’t long before they were engaged in conversation. Two of the men looked very happy to be there whilst the other man looked a little glum. Naturally, their conversation quickly gravitated to a discussion about their respective jobs. “I work on Wall Street” said the first man smiling. “It’s well-paid work but the dress code is very formal and I have to wear a suit with a collar and tie every daily. This is the perfect vacation for me. I have the freedom to relax, feeling completely unrestrained.” The second man smiled and said, “I’m with you buddy! I’m a deep-sea diver and I’m usually weighed down with a diver’s suit, lead boots and a brass helmet. Being here on this beach is real freedom for me.” The two men then looked at their unhappy companion and asked what he did for a living. “I’m a pickpocket,” said the man.
A Dinner Party
A family was having some people to dinner. At the table, the mother turned to her sixyear-old daughter and said, “Dear, would you like to say the blessing?”
“I wouldn’t know what to say,” replied the little girl, shyly.
“Just say what you hear Mommy say, sweetie,” the woman said. Her daughter took a deep breath, bowed her head, and solemnly said, “Dear Lord, why did I invite all these people to dinner!?!”
The Door
At a magic academy, students are always curious about the mysterious door at the end of the hallway. Legends say that only the most extraordinary wizards could open it. One day, a young boy enters the academy, and without hesitation, walks straight to that door and opens it. Everyone is stunned. They ask, “How did you do it? Are you a prodigy?” The boy chuckled, “No, it was just a pull not a push door!”
