18th.
March
20th this year was the Spring Equinox and astronomically speaking it is the first day of Spring. The same day, ‘Aemet’, the Spanish Meteorological Department, issued another of their “yellow” weather warnings for fifteen communities including Andalucia. They forecast heavy rain, high winds and high seas, caused by the storm ‘Martinho’.
Unusually, during March, there have been frequent showers and various very heavy downfalls that are not typical for this time of the year. In March last year the restrictions on using potable water were put in place designed to save water! Apart from the inconvenience to residents and businesses from heavy rain, gardens love it and reservoirs have gone up substantially. This means there will be more renewable energy electricity generated from hydro-electric dams. Forecasts for summer are that it will be very dry and hot with prolonged periods of drought!
President Donald Trump and his tariff wars are bad news, and on April 2nd he planned to announce individual tariffs for a large number of countries including Spain, other EU countries and the UK. The EU have suspended their retaliatory tariffs until mid-April giving them time to consider their approach, and we comment on this in our “In the News” section.
Suspended on January 22nd and backdated to January 1st, there is still no MOVES III scheme that gives subsidies for buying an electric or plug-in hybrid car and an income tax allowance. An extension or a new plan is promised, and the EU want a “shock plan” to boost sales that will apply to all member states. We comment on the other reasons for stagnant sales in an article. April 2nd is the date when people in Spain can submit their income tax declaration, known as ‘La Renta’ for the calendar year 2024, but the closing date is Monday, June 30th. It defines what tax is due, and what refunds can be claimed. It is possible to obtain an appointment to visit the
tax office for our area in Huércal-Overa, obtain information on-line and submit the declaration, or use accountants and ‘gestors’ who deal with Spanish paperwork and will do this nearer the deadline. We list people and companies that you can ask to do the return for you in our directory section. A tax return done by a professional may totally offset their cost when all the ins and outs are taken into account. They will advise you as to whether a joint declaration for a married couple or for a legal ‘pareja de hecho’ partnership is a good idea or not. For 2024, some maternity and nursery costs can be included and the tax relief for buying an electric car and installing charging points. Also the income tax threshold before tax was due was increased in 2024.
As we move towards Easter, the week leading up to Easter Sunday, “Domingo de Resurrección”, is known as “Semana Santa” (Holy week), and “Jueves Santo” is the Spanish name for Maundy Thursday in the UK. This year, it is April 17th, a fiesta day in Andalucía but not in the rest of Spain as “Día de San José” (Spanish Father’s Day) on March 19th, was swapped with Jueves Santo in Andalucía. “Viernes Santo” is Good Friday and is a fiesta date in all of Spain. During Semana Santo there are lavish processions when statues of Jesus or the Virgin Mary are carried through the streets from inside churches, and there is a strict timetable in Almería city. Thursday, May 1st is a national fiesta, “El Día del Trabajador”, the Day of the Worker.
Spain, along with France, is very worried about the threat from President Trump of a 200% tax on alcohol coming from the EU and the uncertainty of what he might announce in April. Andalucía includes Almería province and Juanma Morena, the President of Andalucía, is very concerned that tariffs will affect the economy. At a meeting with various heads of industry he referred to overcoming the pandemic, dealing with inflation when prices went up, the negative effects of the war in Ukraine and now the very serious price wars, not yet not fully detailed. He is concerned that these will mean growth estimates for 2025 may have to be downgraded. Fortunately, only 5% of all exports from Spain go to the US and 74% go to the EU but out of the 5%, all exports from Andalucía to the US last year totalled 40 billion euros including wine, olive oil, agrifood products and aircraft components, with Andalucía and Catalonia exporting the highest amounts. Spain exported 67 million litres of wine to the value of 360 million euros last year and olive oil exports from Andalucía, including from our province, amounted to 476 million euros. Trump put an import tax on olive oil in 2018 that cut exports substantially. Juanma Moreno stated that it was vital to find new markets in Asia or expand them. Last year a delegation to China came back with an agreement to send more goods there, and a visit to Japan is planned as they have a very good purchasing power.
The Junta de Andalucía have allocated 1.68 million euros this year to continue the scientific research at the Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, the main observational astronomy infrastructure in continental Europe, located in the Sierra de Filabres at Gérgal. The Junta is a 50% co-owner together with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Improvements will be made to the 3.5 metre telescope that is several times larger than ones usually found at other observatories. New regulations have just been approved to limit light interference at night, principally from street
lights, sports centres, beaches and illuminated signs, as these are a big problem. Non-essential lights will have to be turned off and timers put on other lights. This affects 72 municipalities in our province and there is a two-year period when improvements and modifications have to be in place.
The association with the same name now has 122 villages in Spain that have received their awards and puts them on a publicity footing. In Almería province this applies to Mojácar, Níjar and Lucainena de las Torres. There are 19 in Andalucía that between them attracted 7.8 million tourists and 2.3 million of them, 30%, were non-Spanish. Níjar had just over 2 million tourists, followed by Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz), with 1.5 million and Mojácar with 1.13 million. Mojácar and Níjar have the most visitors during July and August but other ones inland see the highest numbers in October and May. The aim of the association is to promote small municipalities, preferably rural ones, chosen as achieving a high quality attraction combined with cultural events and activities.
It is compulsory from Wednesday, April 2nd for non-UK nationals to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK. It has been a requirement since last year for visitors from countries including the USA, Canada and Australia and almost 1.1 million visitors have been issued with ETAs so far. GOV.UK state that “applying for an ETA is quick and simple through the UK ETA app and as the vast majority of applicants currently receive a decision automatically in minutes, spontaneous trips to the UK should still be possible. Prospective visitors can also apply on GOV.UK if they do not have access to a smartphone. Applicants have to provide their biographic and biometric details and answer questions on suitability and criminality. Once an applicant has successfully applied, their ETA is digitally linked to their passport. While most applications are approved quickly, it is still recommended to allow up to 3 working days
to account for the small number of cases that require an additional review”. An ETA currently costs 12 euros via Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, or Google Pay and allows multiple visits to the UK of up to 6 months over a 2-year period, or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever is sooner. The UK Border Control have indicated that the cost may go up to 19 euros “in a few months”. The authorities stress that the ETA authorisation is not a visa, it is a digital permission to travel. If nonBritish people are in transit at an airport and stay in the airport, they do not need the ETA.
The ‘Macarfi Guide’ is not quite as prestigious as the Michelin Guide, but they publish lists of restaurants in Spain that they consider are the best ones. In their 2025 guide, in Almería, two local ones are in the list of the 10 they have chosen. In second place is the Juan Moreno restaurant in Vera, that gets a score of 7.7 for food, 7.2 for décor and 8.0 for service. It is also number 95 on their list of the best 100 in Andalucía. The Terraza Carmona in Vera is in fourth place with a comment that they have been open for 75 years, with three generations of the family who run it. Their score is 7.7 for food, 6.8 for décor and 7.5 for service. Number one is La Costa restaurant in El Ejido along with one in Agua Amargo (La Villa), four in Almeria city, one in San José, one in Rodalquilar, and one in Adra.
There are 17 autonomous communities in Spain and ours is Andalucía. Between 2009-2013, the hardest years of the financial crisis, they ran up combined debts of 109 billion euros. This was made worse by the pandemic with added debts of 29 billion euros. Central government has proposed that 83 billion euros is written off and each community would receive a payment based on their population, geographical and demographical characteries. Andalucía would be the largest beneficiary in absolute terms (18.8 billion), followed by Catalonia (17.1 billion), the Valencian Community (11.2 billion) and Madrid (8.6 billion). The PP party (roughly a conservative party) have mixed views
regarding the proposal by the PSOE party (roughly a labour party) in government and think that the whole system of financing needs major changes. However, when the bill is presented in parliament it is extremely unlikely that any of the communities run by the PP, which includes Andalucía, will vote against it.
Some people may decide only to accept phone calls from immediate family or friends, or ones on their contacts list. Other people may not answer phone calls from a number not in their contact list, fearful that these are “cold calling” unsolicited calls by companies who are trying to sell you goods or services. Article 6.1 of the Regulation (EU) 2016 / 679 prohibits these unsolicited phone calls to mobile phones or landlines from any country including the home country. This came into force in Spain from June 29th, 2023. The only exceptions are if you have contacted a company and asked them to call you back, or the call is an emergency one from bodies such as the Guardia Civil police or the ES “alert” system warning of some crisis, sent to all mobile phones in a particular area. The Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEDP) will mount an investigation if cold calling phone calls are being made and reported to them. They can take legal proceedings against these companies or individuals and will issue fines if is considered appropriate.
The Department of Traffic (DGT) are issuing warnings relating to scams where a text message is received claiming a traffic fine has to be paid immediately to avoid a sanction. This is called “smishing” and the latest ones are that a 50 euro fine has to be paid very soon for exceeding the speed limit in a 30km urban zone and stop an increase in the fine if it is not paid. This message asks you to make a phone call to a number that is a premium number with a high tariff, so very costly, or to access a link on a fake website. The scam is purely trying to obtain money through fraud. The DGT stress that these cybercriminal fraud SMSs
should be ignored, recipients should not ring the phone number or click on the link. The DGT remind people that they never contact a person who has been caught speeding by a text message or an email. A certified letter is sent to the registered address of the vehicle owner or, if the driver is registered with the Electronic Road Address (DEV), they will receive a notification via text message or email that there is the existence of a fine in the electronic DGT mailbox. If there appears to be an unpaid fine, this can be checked on the Traffic Penalty Bulletin Board (TESTRA) where all fines are registered and this is free. Alternatively, there is an app ‘mi DGT’ that gives access to all details regarding the vehicle that can be obtained by registering. If you are stopped by police and asked for driver information, this app lists all the details of the vehicle and owner and will be accepted. Fines sent through the post or issued on the spot have a 50% discount if paid within 20 days. If not, the fine has to be paid in full within 45 days and if not, there is a surcharge of 20%. Fines can be paid 24/7 by ringing 060 which is an automated service allowing you to pay by a credit card, by using the app, or at post offices, Caixabank branches or their ATMs, and in person at the ‘tráfico’ office in cities (but not by cash). If you are stopped by Guardia Civil police and they issue a fine on the spot, you can obtain the 50% discount immediately and pay the other 50% with a credit or debit card.
The President of the Junta de Andalucía, dignitaries, the mayor and other councillors, officially opened the new medical centre in Mojácar on March 4th. He pointed out that it had cost 5 million euros and along with the new bus station alongside this highlighted the willingness of the Junta to invest in Mojacár. He pointed out that it has 30 professionals, an emergency service, three family doctor consulting rooms, three nurses, paediatrics, dentistry and minor surgery facilities and a large parking area. He stated that it allows rapid evacuation of patients to the hospital in Huércal-Overa (after a new roundabout had to be built!). Originally, when the location was announced
it was stated that it was midway between the playa and the village. To date, the village health centre with one doctor and a nurse during some surgery hours is still in operation.
In our December magazine we commented on all the twists and turns relating to the 421 bed El Algarrobico hotel in Carboneras where building started in 2003 but was suspended in 2006. The final aim is the demolition. In February, Central Government announced that they were expropriating the land that has 40% of the building on it and infringes on the maritime boundary of 100 metres, and they have started to put this in motion. They asked the Junta de Andalucía who own the land of the other 60%, to start their own expropriation so demolition can be undertaken “in a few months”. The Junta don’t want to do this as they say it was discounted in 2009 and they consider it will result in more legal proceedings for years. They are also concerned about compensation that they might have to pay to the promoter Azata del Sol who are asking for 70 million euros, from an independent valuation of the 95% completed hotel. The Junta consider that the only way forward is for Carboneras town hall to annul the 2003 building licence, that could then be followed by a demolition order. A court judgement in 2022 was that the hotel was “plainly legal” until the licence was revoked. Despite repeated requests, a lot of pressure, and the threat of weekly fines (that Greenpeace are asking for) Carboneras town hall do not want to be sued by the promotor
for revoking the licence that they consider was completely legal in 2003. They are afraid that the 70 million “or more” in compensation may have to be paid by them. The mayor, Salvador Hernández, points out that their 2025 budget is only 15 million euros, they only have 8,200 inhabitants and they could never pay the compensation. Azata del Sol have asked the Andalucía High Court to rule that if the building licence is revoked, they are entitled to receive the compensation from someone!
March 8th was the third anniversary of the ‘Campo de Gibraltar’ initiative, a major beefing up of the operations to catch drug and people smugglers. Until December this year there is also a sum of 36.9 million euros allocated to provide more land, sea and aerial surveillance by helicopters and more modern technology. In our province, but not just ours, Guardia Civil Police and Customs agents have boats that cannot go as fast as the narco-launches. New boats made of aluminium with a much faster speed are on order but trying to stop the smugglers at high speed on the high seas is described as “suicidal”. Narco-launches are frequently seen in coves off the Gabo de Gata coast where they wait out bad weather, collect fuel and disembark immigrants. The 2022 amended operations were to break up the gangs, seize various forms of transport, freeze bank accounts, and find and stop people providing fuel. It has been very successful and in our province since March 2022 a total of 2,304 operations have been carried out by the State Security Forces. This figure is even higher because the Ministry of the Interior’s balance sheet ignores operations by 50 landbased Customs Surveillance officers. 43 tonnes of drugs have been seized, mostly cannabis resin and hashish from North Africa, marijuana plantations in Almeria province, and cocaine shipments from other parts of Spain and from Latin America. 309 means of transport have been captured and confiscated including high performance cars and SUVs, 40 narco-boats, recreational boats including jet skis, trucks, vans, one tractor, and computer equipment. 80,000 litres of fuel (44,000 in 2024)
have been withdrawn from the ‘auxiliary industry’ of fuelling the launches, and 1,814 people have been arrested.
The government regulates the price of a 12kg bottle of butane gas every two odd numbered months, mostly based on the market price of liquified gas. In January 2022 it was the highest price ever costing 17,50 euros but in June 2022 it peaked at 19,55 euros and the government put a cap on the price of 20 euros. This January it was 16,64 euros and as all reviews are done on the Tuesday of the 3rd week of the month, the next one was March 18th. It went up to 17,67 euros, a rise of 6.19% until it is reviewed again in May. Previously, the rise in price was capped at 5% but on March 4th it was raised above 5% “temporarily”. People with butane gas appliances are required to have them inspected every five years which involves looking at the regulator, the expiry date of the tubing, and the performance of the appliance. This has to be done by an authorised technician. There are sometimes complaints that a company with several workers have come to a particular area, where they are not normally based, and may charge extortionate amounts of money for changing a regulator and the tubing but they don’t normally check the appliance. The best advice is to use a local technician to carry out the checks rather than people who are going to every property door by door, even though they say an inspection is necessary and that you have to have it done by them.
February is not normally a month in Spain when employment rises and unemployment falls, as it is between Christmas and Easter. Figures for this February however, showed that 100,340 more people started paying into the Social Security system, so legally in work, taking the total to 21.2 million well above the 20.7 million in February 2024. This is the highest number in February since 2007. Unemployment went down by 6,000 to 2.6 million, the lowest for 17 years, and in February 2021 it
Fatigue, a hidden danger on the road, is responsible for 20% to 30% of all accidents, according to Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT). It reduces your ability to concentrate, increasing the risk of collisions or veering off the road. At Generali Expatriates, we want to ensure you stay safe by explaining how fatigue affects your driving and the factors that contribute to tiredness behind the wheel.
Fatigue slows your reactions, impairs vision, and leads to slower, less precise movements, putting you at greater risk. It can also cause headaches and discomfort, making driving more difficult. When you’re tired, you’re more likely to make risky decisions and misjudge other drivers’ actions.
Lack of rest
Take a break every two hours or 150 kilometres to combat tiredness.
Weather and lighting
Fog, rain, or driving at night or during dawn/ sunset requires more concentration and leads to faster exhaustion.
Traffic and road conditions
Heavy traffic, poor roads, or mechanical issues in your car increase stress and fatigue.
High stress levels
Rushing or stressful driving situations lead to poor judgment and greater fatigue.
Fatigue is just one risk you face on the road. At Generali Expatriates, we offer car insurance solutions tailored to your lifestyle. And now, take advantage of our cashback offer! We are offering a 10% cashback on your premium every time you take out a new car or home insurance policy with us—valid until May 26, 2025!

was 4 million. The service industry including hotels and catering, construction and industry showed a rise in employment and in absolute numbers, the Valencian Community had 6,074 less unemployed, Catalonia 2,318 and Andalucía 2,268. Madrid community employees went down by 4,172, the Canary Islands 1,328 and Castilla-La Mancha 801. In total, unemployment decreased in nine regions of Spain but it grew in eight. Figures for March usually show a rise in employment because of Easter.
Obesity amongst school children and people in further education is put at 36%. To get this down there are proposals that vending machines, cafeterias and canteens in schools cannot sell sugary products, such as industrial pastries or soft drinks, as well as energy drinks. The fine print has a ban on the content of five grammes of sugars per packaged portion, or those that have high fat or salt content. It also affects energy drinks, and health experts say that young people should never drink these. As regards cafeterias and school meals there has to be less fatty foods, the use of virgin olive oil, and more fruit and vegetables in the menus. Every two years, the Ministry for Social Rights and Consumer Affairs carry out a study to measure overweight in Spanish children aged six to nine. Spain has been maintaining worrying rates of excess weight, that includes overweight and obesity, and since 2011 it has often exceeded 40%. In the latest study from 2023 and 12,000 schoolchildren, the figure has dropped to 36%, although this is still very high.
This is the time when processionary caterpillars leave their nests in pine tree, come down to the ground and set off one behind the other, hence their name. If they fear an attack, they release their hairs that can cause hives or allergic reactions in humans and can be fatal for pets. Advise is not to remove nests on your own, with gasoline, insecticides, shooting with a shotgun to break them, or cutting the branches where they are located, as this can affect people’s safety or
health. The best thing to do is to contact your town hall as many of them use experts to kill them. In Catalonia, the caterpillar is controlled every year over about 20,000 hectares (77 square miles) of forest areas between October and November, when the larvae are in their first stages, using a biological spray from light aircraft or helicopters.
Catalonia is going to double the nightly tourist tax this year and at least 25% of the revenue will be used for housing initiatives. The modification raises the rate to 2 euros (campsites and basic establishments) and 7 euros (five-star hotels) per day in Barcelona and between 1.20 euros and 6 euros in the rest of the community, but there is no tax for day-trippers. This collected in 85 million euros in 2023 and more than 90 million last year. They anticipate that this year with the projected very large rise in tourists it may be close to 200 million euros.
The electricity supply company Endesa made a profit of 1.9 billion euros last year, up 154% on 2023. The steep rise was after they had to pay the Qatar Energy company 530 million euros in 2023 for a gas contract that was in dispute. A spokesperson commented, “We have delivered outstanding results for the year, providing us with strong cash flow and supporting sound financial metrics. As a result of all this, we have raised the dividend we plan to distribute this year to 1.32 euros, which is 32% more than in 2023 and 10% more than the target we had set ourselves. They pointed out that 86% of the electricity produced in Spain last year came from “non-emitting CO2 sources, mostly from renewables and nuclear sources”, which is 6% more than in 2023. Renewable generation grew by 25%, thanks to a rainy year that increased river flows and electricity from dams. The total capacity generated last year increased by 200 MW (1 MW is 1 million watts) to 17,200 MW.
A court in Valencia is hearing evidence at to
what happened on October 29th, the day of the devastating Dana flooding. The President, Carlos Mazón, has consistently refused to resign, but he attracts boos and claims that he is a liar whenever he appears in public which is now very infrequent, even in Alicante. Effectively, he stays in his office as there have been a considerable number of large demonstrations calling for his resignation. At a Vocational Training Congress recently, he was booed and could not start a speech for nearly 10 minutes, and the same thing happened when he left. Journalists crowded round him and demanded to know the truth about the afternoon and evening. He had already admitted, after initial denies, that he was having a long three-hour lunch ending at 6pm, with a journalist regarding offering her a job. He has stated that he was in frequent contact with emergency personnel during this time, but the journalist says this was not frequent and he showed no concern or inclination to cut short the meal. He then went to his office for reasons that are not entirely clear and he made at least a couple of unrelated phone calls, but he is refusing to reveal where his official car was during the afternoon and early evening and the log of the journeys he made. The judge wants to know why the 29 member ‘Cecopi’ emergency committee did not meet until 4.45pm. Carlos Mazón initially maintained that he arrived at the crisis meeting at 7.10pm, but it has transpired that he did not arrive until 8.28pm as video cameras show him entering the building and briefly chatting with a security guard. He claimed that the delay was “because there was a lot of traffic” on the way to the meeting, but this was 13 hours after the first AEMET (Weather authority) severe “red” warning at 7.31am. The “ES Alert” warning to mobile phones was not made until 8.11pm and the person responsible for issuing the alert has told the court that she didn’t know exactly how it worked. After homes and businesses were devasted and many people had already died, the alert was only that people should not travel in the area, and the proposed message that everybody should go to the first floor of buildings and certainly not go down to basements and underground garages,
was not sent “to prevent panic”. The judge has observed that the time the alert was sent was “remarkably late”. The head of the 112-emergency service told the court that they received 19,800 calls during the day and 76% were before the alert message was sent and 50% during the morning. In all, 225 people drowned or were killed and three people have still not yet been found. Carlos Mazón is trying to claim that the experts who should have reported the danger to him did this too late and they are responsible for the disaster, not him. Logs of emails, phone calls and the exact times from various bodies contradict this. He is a PP party President and the central PP party has not openly called for his resignation but as more details emerge, this support is wavering. Politicians have prepared a list of the people who might be appointed in his place if he does finally resign!
The World Olive Oil Exhibition (WOOE) is the largest fair in the world dedicated exclusively to olive oil and the 12th annual event was held in Madrid in midMarch. Andalucía had the largest exhibition space of all the participating autonomous communities, with a total of 387m2 out of the 633m2. One of the aims was to penetrate new markets, in case Donald Trump reintroduced a hefty import tax. Andalucía is a world leader in olive oil production with more than 1.6 million hectares of olive groves, 62% of the national total and 15% of the world area. In 2023, the production and marketing of oil
and olives generated 3.9 billion euros and in 2024 exports reached a record value of 4.6 billion euros, 39% more than in 2023. The olive sector generates around 20 million daily workers which represents 40% of agricultural employment in the community. Its processing industry has 850 oil mills, 17 refineries, 225 pressing machines, 772 bottling plants and 116 olive oil packaging plants. Almería province produces a very large percentage of the olive oil.
In our province, exports to Germany were about 1.5 billion euros last year, followed by France with about 600 million euros and the United Kingdom was in third place with exports worth 522 million euros. This was 25% of all exports from Andalucía and up 1.6% over 2023. The vast majority referred to agri-food products and 74.5% were vegetables, plants, roots and food tubers worth 411 million euros. 30 million euros came from edible fruits or melons and 1.5 million from prepared vegetables, prepared fruit and fruit juice. The second large group were from manufactures of stone, plaster, cement and asbestos totalling 56 million euros, and meat products worth 19.1 million euros, both up on 2023. Luxeapers is a large company in Almería that export a wide range of pickles and olives to 115 countries. With a turnover of 500,000 euros five years ago, this has now gone up to 1,7 million. Sergio Viñolo, their CEO, says that Brexit has had no effect on their exports and they have gone up each year. He states, “When you have a consolidated market and there is no special tariff pressure to aggravate it, and you have good relationships with your customers, they will continue to place orders and increase turnover volume, as has happened to us with regard to the UK and other countries.”
In 2024 Almería airport recorded 786,205 passengers using the airport as an arrival or departure point, but in 2019 it was 979,406 and the highest number was in 2017 with 1,007,446. From March 31st until October 27th there were 15 international routes and 8 within Spain. The air
authority AENA have published a league table for this period and the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez airport handled 206,398 passengers, which is 19.4% of the total. Barcelona-El Prat followed on with 100,164 passengers at 8.4%. Manchester International was the busiest foreign airport, with 77,038 passengers, followed by Gatwick with 48,460 passengers, Melilla with 47,773, Seville with 32,998, Stansted with 32,372 and Birmingham with 24,558. Not all routes increased their passenger numbers and Gatwick flights saw a sharp drop of 43.8% and Birmingham ones went down by 33.4%. The occupancy on flights went from 71% to 88% that applied to Madrid flights.
January 31st was the fifth anniversary of Brexit coming into force. YouGov have published an extensive survey in which 55% of Britons said they regretted leaving the EU. The very prominent discontent is that 75% of young people, who were not old enough to vote in the 2016 referendum, blame the decision as having made major problems that affect their future. In 2011, according to data from the United Kingdom’s Office for National Statistics, almost 400,000 Britons between the ages of 15 and 49 had lived for more than a year in a country in the Schengen territory, where the freedom of movement of EU people was no problem. From 2021 it is no longer possible to travel to Schengen countries for more than 90 days, and only as a tourist, without the possibility of studying or working. Faced with the coming to power of Keir Starmer’s Labour Party, after 14 years of bitter battles with previous Conservative governments, the EU thought it was time to give young people a chance. They proposed a “Youth Mobility Scheme” that is a similar plan to the one the UK already has with other countries, such as Australia. It would allow those under 30 to live, study and work on both sides of the English Channel for a period of four years. To date, believed to be because he is fearful of the possible reaction of the populist right Reform Party led by Nigel Farage, Keir Starmer has categorically rejected that proposal, despite his expressed willingness to
promote a restart of relations with the EU. Sadiq Khan, the London Mayor, is very much in favour of adopting the new plan. He says, “When someone comes to London and stays here to work or study for two, three or four years before returning to their home country, they develop a love for London. And when they end up becoming a senior executive or an investor, they remember their love for this city. They are also young, they don’t abuse public services, are normally healthy, and we benefit from their contribution to the growth of the city thanks to their work.” The survey reveals that many young people wishing to study abroad are going to the US because it is much simpler, when they can’t come to Europe. A spokesperson from the Association of Universities consider that if a person with a degree then wants to study for a Ph.D degree and they choose to go to the US, it is unlikely that they will come back, so this is another very unfortunate “brain drain” of talented people.
A report ‘InfluenceMap’ compiled in the UK looking at 2024, has calculated the level of emissions since 2014. The latest report shows that 20 companies are responsible for 40% of all CO2 emissions worldwide, and 16 of them are state owned. The study tracked the climate footprint of oil, gas, coal and cement producers. The company with the most emissions was Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia’s stateowned company with 4.4%. It is followed by Coal India 3.7%, the Chinese CHN Energy company 3.7%, National Iranian Oil Co 2.9%, Jinneng Group 2.8% and Gazprom 2.3%. As regards cement producers, the China Cement company was responsible for 2.8%. All these are controlled by governments, which accumulate almost 20% of the carbon dioxide emitted from the fossil fuel sector. The worst private equity company ExxonMobil is in 14th place, followed by Chevron, Shell, TotalEnergies and BP. These five oil companies in total, produced 4.9%. Spain’s Repsol company emitted 0.2% of CO2 and is 89th in the list. Emmett Connaire, an analyst at InfluenceMap and co-author of the study, said in a statement that this analysis reveals that “despite global climate commitments, a small group of
the world’s largest fossil fuel producers are significantly increasing production and emissions.” It also highlights “the disproportionate impact that these companies have on the climate crisis”. But he also warns that some of them are beginning to face “legal action in the United States.” So far, ‘Climate responsibility’ laws have been approved in New York and Vermont.
On March 5th a draft of a “shock plan” European Automobile Industrial Action was unveiled by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. It covers the pooling of the different incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles that member states have launched in recent years, the creation of a European alliance for autonomous vehicles and promoting the development of driverless vehicles. A key feature to encourage sales of electric cars is purchase aid with a European aid plan common to the entire EU. In this regard, Ursula von der Leyen explained that the Commission will begin “without delay” to work with member states to share the best incentives and lessons learned in the last few years, so that aid is equal throughout the EU. To give an example, in Germany, while the subsidies were in force (they are currently suspended), the buyer took the subsidy at the dealership, whilst in Spain with the expired Moves III scheme, the purchaser has to wait an average of between 12 and 24 months to obtain the grant. She announced that “This work will identify a toolkit with options for incentive schemes that are designed to be economically efficient and fiscally sustainable and adapted to the maturity of the markets concerned, and explore pathways for potential incentive schemes at EU level. These discussions will be incorporated into a Commission Recommendation, which will also identify sources of EU funding with which Member States can support such incentives.” In addition, the Commission has indicated that one of the priorities is to allow European manufacturers to reduce their dependence on external countries, especially China, that completely dominate the production of batteries and their key components,
as well as the extraction of key minerals. The EU’s goal is to ensure that by 2030 more than 50% of the vehicles value is European. The draft states that in addition, Brussels will study the possibility of financing the start-up of European production lines, with direct financial support. “As for electric car charging points, one of the common complaints in the sector is the difficulty in setting up public charging points”. (This is a process that in Spain can take up to three years due to the lack of homogeneity between what each distributor requires to energize the charging points and the administrative obstacles). She announced that “The Commission will send recommendations to Member States on reducing these waiting times to connect to the electricity grid and will publish by the summer, guiding principles identifying the conditions under which advance investments in grid projects should be granted”. The Commission also proposes the implementation of “affordable loans” so that people with low resources can access zero-emission vehicles. “The EU’s objective is to democratise electric mobility and at the same time boost the sale of this type of car. In addition, the Commission continues to work on a law to electrify
business fleets, without imposing an unnecessary financial burden.”
Advice to motorists in winter is to start your car and wait a few seconds for the oil to lubricate the engine. This is because in winter the oil is thicker and more time is needed for it to circulate and reduce wear. Also, in the first few seconds the battery stabilises and starts to recharge slightly. Setting off too soon can result in a voltage spike. Also, waiting a few seconds allows the engine to start to reach a temperature that is more suitable, improving combustion efficiency and reducing the emission of pollutants. Antifreeze liquid added to the radiator water lowers the boiling point and is a good idea, even in Spain.
BCC is the parent company of Grupo Cooperativo Cajamar bank and they have announced that they are moving their registered office from Madrid to Almería to the Cajamar financial centre at the Almería Scientific-Technological Park (PITA), where there are 1,500 professionals from Grupo
Cajamar and subsidiary companies that provide technological and other services. The Financial Centre occupies an area of 76,800m2 and has more than 30,000m2 of landscaped areas. There are common spaces and collaborative work areas, a wide variety of meeting rooms, a visitor centre, an auditorium, a cafeteria, corporate restaurant, a nursery, gym and outdoor sports facilities.
We have previously explained that the automobile industry in the EU has to come up with some very strict reductions of CO2 emissions as part of the ‘CAFE’ “Clean Air for Europe” project down from 115.1 grammes of CO2 to 93.3 grammes, with heavy fines if they don’t. They can balance the emissions on conventional fuelled vehicles with the zero emissions of electric and plug-in cars, but most manufacturers complain that sales of zero emission vehicles are almost stagnant and to do this they will need to reduce the number of sales of conventional fuelled ones. The EU President, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on March 3rd that “Companies will have three years to meet the standards instead of being required to comply annually, to provide the industry with more breathing space and clarity, without altering the agreed targets,” but she asked the manufacturers to do all they could to reduce emissions as soon as possible. She explained that the European supply chains for cars, particularly batteries, must become more robust and resilient. The EU Commission will explore direct support for EU battery producers and gradually introduce European standards for battery cells and components. “Of course, we will continue to reduce bureaucracy,” von der Leyen added. The automobile industry, including manufacturers in Spain, has breathed a huge sigh of relief!
The Spanish stock exchange, like many others, is an indication of the state of the country commercially and financially. In 2023 there were fears that the economy would not improve much during 2024 owing to the uncertainties of inflation, interest rates and the geopolitical situation, but this was far from the truth. Companies had to submit their
balance sheets for 2024 by February 28th and the results show that profits were 73.1 billion euros up, 20.9%, on 2023. The Ibex 35 was 13,300 points on March 1st, a high number not seen since 2008. We have previously commented on banks recording large profits of 31.8 billion euros, but all the large companies together achieved profits of 62.9 billion euros, up 23.6%. Smaller companies reported profits of 10.2 billion euros up by 6.3%. The 102 companies on the stock exchange generated sales worth 847.3 billion euros up 4.2% and international sales improved by 7.3% to 373.6 billion euros. The two electricity supply companies Endesa and Iberdrola made profits of 1.9 million and 5.6 billion euros respectively but they have not announced that energy bills will come down! Good profits allow companies on the stock exchange, or in general, to hire more staff and the total number at the end of 2024 came to 1.1 million, up 3.28% on 2023. Banco Santander employ nearly 201,000 people and the fashion group Inditex employs 153,000. The Bank of Spain have stated that the 2024 results are “very encouraging”. A percentage of profits are used to pay dividends to shareholders, so this increases the amount of money in circulation. Hopefully, similar results will be a feature of 2025.
Almeria welcomed the MS Hamburg at the beginning of March, the first cruise ship of the season, with more than 400 passengers and 150 crew. During their stopover in Almeria, cruise passengers were able to enjoy various organised excursions to Mojácar, Almería, and the Alpujarras, and explore the cultural heritage and tourist offers in the province, although the weather was not very kind. The “Almería Cruise Friendly” is an organisation that has been reactivated from February. The objective is to offer cruise passengers a range of shops and restaurants that open on the days that cruise ships arrive, serve them with multilingual staff, particularly English speakers and a tax-free service. With the arrival of the MS Hamburg, the port of Almeria kicks off a cruise season that has experienced significant growth in 2025 with 40 scheduled stopovers, twice as many as in the previous season.
Estimates are that wind turbines, particularly at sea, kill between at least 10,000 and up to 100,000 birds each year in various countries. This is not good, but far more birds die from being attacked by cats or flying into building and power lines. When wind turbine farms are proposed there has to be an environmental survey that includes establishing if they are in the path of migrating birds, and if so, they have to be sited elsewhere. It was discovered that painting one of the blades of a wind turbine black can reduce bird deaths by 70% as this improves visibility for the birds, but modern wind turbines have bird sensors that shut them down.
Colour psychology is a field of study that examines how colours can influence human behaviour and emotions. Football teams wearing red kits play better and one of the reasons is that the colour of clothes can affect not only how you feel, but also how you are perceived by others. Red is often associated with power, dominance and aggression, so football teams wearing red kits can be perceived as more threatening or formidable by opposing teams. Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal who all play in red, are the three teams that have won more Premier League and First Division titles than any other team with a different colour.
Most ginger cats are male and there are roughly three ginger male cats to one ginger female cat. This is because the ginger gene is found on the X chromosome, meaning female cats would require two copies of the gene to become ginger, whilst males only need one. Ginger cats are known for their distinct coloration which comes in varying shades of orange, red, and gold. They are also “tabby” cats that refers to a specific coat pattern that involves a colour combination of stripes, swirls, and spots. With their tiger-like appearance and their friendly personalities, ginger cats are some of the most popular cats around.
Because of their shape, LEGO bricks withstand compression better than concrete. An ordinary plastic LEGO brick is able to support the weight of 375,000 other bricks before it breaks. This, theoretically, would let you build a tower nearing 3.5km in height, and a column of approximately 40 billion LEGO bricks would reach the moon. The Lego Group began manufacturing the interlocking toy bricks in 1949 and annual production averages approximately 36 billion, or about 1140 bricks per second. It is estimated that there are over 4 hundred billion Lego bricks in the world which is 62 bricks for every human being.
Dogs tilt their heads when you speak to them to better pinpoint familiar words. Your dog is tilting its head when you speak to it to establish where noises are coming from quicker. This is done to listen out for familiar words such as “walkies” and also helps them to understand the tone of your voice better. If a dog doesn’t tilt its head this is often because breeds with shorter muzzles have to rely less on sound and more on sight. Barking is a common form of communication for dogs, and it can have various meanings depending on the situation. They alert owners to potential threats or they express excitement or playfulness.
Dreaming is part of a healthy sleep and is a normal activity of our brain. Research suggests that if you sleep badly and wake up multiple times throughout the night you will be more likely to recall the content of your dreams. If people wake up whilst they are dreaming, they can remember much more of the dream. Many people who lost sight later in life can still see images in their dreams and dream visually like those with perfect vision. Those who were born with blindness may not see in pictures but they can still experience sounds, touch and emotions. Your brain will remember strange images and facts because they stand out.
In our ‘In the News’ section we comment on the record number of people paying into the Spanish Social Security System during February, which was 21.2 million, and the lowest unemployment figures for 17 years of 2.6 million.
Many international economic analysts are pointing out that Spain is unique in the EU, and is the best EU state in terms of growth. In 2024 it was 3.2%, four times the EU average, and although growth forecasts this year are very slightly down at 2.6%, this may go up as the year progresses, as it did last year. Previous images of Spain being badly affected by the real estate bubble, the economic crisis and lack of growth during the COVID-19 pandemic are now things of the past.
“Spain is now teaching all its critics a lesson” was a recent headline in an editorial from Le Figaro, France’s most widely circulated newspaper. A month earlier, this was stated in a report in The Economist, a publication that is highly respected. Their headline was “What a booming economy can teach the rest of Europe” that pointed out that Spain had the most advanced economy in the EU with the best performance of 2024. Jason Furman is a professor of economics at Harvard University, the other side of the Atlantic. He agrees that “Spain has become the engine of growth in the European Union.”
Taking GDP (Gross Domestic Product) as being a figure equating to 100 in 2019, last year France was at 117, the Eurozone was 121, Spain was 123 and although the UK was slightly higher at 126 it is stagnant at present. Growth estimates for 2026 are that Italy will grow by 0.9%, Germany by 1%, France by 1.1%, the Eurozone by 1.4%, the UK by only 0.75% and Spain by 1.8%. In 2020 the Spanish debt was 119% of GDP which has dropped steadily to 104% last year. The EU are telling Spain that there is still room for improvement and the money obtained by putting diesel fuel up by 11 céntimos per litre should be used to reduce the debt.
Previously, northern states were considered to be industrious and southern states lagged behind, portrayed as being “the frugal north and the wasteful south.” Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain were referred to as the ‘PIGS’ countries lagging behind. Now, Germany and France are experiencing growth problems whilst apart from Spain leading the way, figures in Italy and Greece are improving. One of the keys to Spain’s recovery is the high number of tourists, 94 million last year up from 85 million in 2023. The injection of EU funding has helped as the postpandemic recovery grant for Spain was 79 billion euros, with the last stage payment in 2026. In 2024 the trade surplus with EU states reached 30.3 billion. The next largest surplus was France with only 20.8 billion.
Spain’s big push for renewable energy is one of the elements that analysts underline to explain the resilience of the economy and the best way out of the energy crisis. Covid, an unspeakable tragedy in terms of human lives, has not caused permanent damage to the activity as was once feared. Innovative migration policies are another factor that stands out. Strong immigrations compensate for the ageing of the population and preventing the labour market from suffocating.
One big worry is the tariff war between the USA and EU states. This will affect the geo-political situation and trade. In 2024 a total of 20% of exports from the EU went to the USA.
Obtaining a mortgage is a large factor in the lives of ordinary people. As we have mentioned previously, a large number of property purchases were for cash last year, either the full property purchase price or a mortgage deposit. There were 199,000 donations recorded at notaries, an alltime high. 23,000 were for the complete purchase price and mostly parents and grandparents were the ones who provided the money.
Obtaining a mortgage depends on various factors such as the ‘Euribor’ (an interbank lending rate) that also affects fixed term ones, and the willingness of banks to lend money. When interest rates from the Central European Bank come down this reduces the Euribor, so mortgages are cheaper. On March 5th the interest was reduced down to 2.5%, the lowest since February 2023, with further cuts during the year not ruled out. In October 2023 the Euribor was 4.16% but estimates for later this year are that it could fall to 2% or less. We commented in our March magazine that 2024 saw record profits for all of the banks in Spain. Consequently, banks have funds available for people wanting a mortgage.
At present for fixed-rate mortgages, Banco Santander offers 3.07%, the lowest percentage. Normally, borrowers have to sign up for a package with their wage or wages paid into a current account, with some banks home and life insurance and a minimum use of a credit card. Fixed-rate mortgages have the attraction that payments are the same every month for the whole mortgage term. Banks have now introduced mortgages with a fixed-rate for 5 to 10 years and the Euribor plus a percentage for the remainder. With the obligatory package, Banco Santander charge 2.75% for 10 years and then Euribor plus 0.84%.
One analyst says that published interest rates are not the full picture. Banks do a “solvency test” taking into account various factors. They like mortgages with 80% financing, monthly incomes of more than 2,500 euros and spending of around
30% of the salary for mortgage payments with low financial commitments for other things. These parameters will result in a personalised quote. The higher the loan, the more the interest rate can be negotiated, as banks seek long-term profitability.
To understand the impact of the fall in interest rates, an example is a mortgage of 150,000 euros at a fixed 3%, to be paid over 30 years, so a monthly payment of 629 euros. With 2% interest on the same terms, payments are reduced to 553 euros, that is an annual saving of 912 euros. In addition, this drop in the interest rate allows access to higher-priced homes. With a salary of 1,700 euros per month, the 30% of income is 510 euros and finance of 80% at 3% would allow for a property purchase price of 150,000 euros. With a 2% rate, the maximum purchase price would increase to 172,500 euros.
Some experts advise against delaying too long in applying for a mortgage because house prices in Spain continue to rise and this will almost certainly continue this year. This is the “Catch 22” that we have referred to before. Alternatively, waiting for the Euribor to drop may be worthwhile, even though the property you finally purchase is not quite as good. With banks starting to be more aggressive to get mortgage customers to sign up with them, this is a good time to obtain competitive interest rates from various banks. Advice from financial analysts is that recent borrowers should go back to their bank and negotiate a reduction, or the other option is to change banks.
TheSpanish government, manufacturers and dealers hope that in 2025 there will be a big boost in the purchase of electric vehicles. In 2024, sales of plug-in hybrid and purely electric cars stayed at 12%, well below the European average of 22%. Similar countries, such as France and Germany, have 25% and 24% market penetration respectively. It is not just a question of income, Greece had sales of 14% and Portugal with a lower income per person achieved 32%. Italy is worst with sales of 9.2%. Álvaro Sauras, from the Spanish Association of Electric Vehicle Users, states that looking at the total cost of owning an electric vehicle over a number of years, with charging costs and repairs, electric cars win hands down.
There are a variety of reasons for poor sales and one of them is that with prices of around 25,000 euros there can be a substantial difference of up to 7,000 euros between electric and conventionally fuelled models. It is less at the 30,000 euros price range but European manufacturers are struggling to close the gap. Now, cars manufactured in China, including the Dacia ‘Spring’ and the Cupra ‘Tavascan’, have very hefty EU import taxes designed to protect European manufacturers.
Another problem is “fake news” on the internet and from some influencers. Typical incorrect statements are that batteries only last for five years, electric cars catch fire, and they are only a passing fad and will eventually die out. Batteries don’t stop working after five years and fires of electric vehicles are very rare, but it is a very damaging myth. Partly because of these untrue statements, sales of non-plug-in hybrid cars continue to rise, although they are among the least efficient. However, in the last six months of 2024, sales of plug-in cars slightly exceeded diesel cars for the first time.
Geography comes into the equation as Spain is a large country. Holiday journeys of 600-700kms
are often made, and buyers think that they have to buy models with a range of at least 500kms that will often cost about 40,000 euros. There are large unpopulated areas without sufficient charging points and although France and Germany are large countries there are more populated areas and more charging points. In total, there are 38,700 public charging points in Spain which goes up slightly every month but only 3,250 are ultra-fast ones. One problem is about 20 different apps, although people can pay with a card at petrol stations. In Portugal there is a universal payment system at all charging points.
Another problem in Spain is that almost 65% of the population live in apartments, a very high percentage. In many cases, particularly with older apartment blocks, there is no underground garage so no easily accessible charging points and not enough ones on the street.
The MOVES III scheme in Spain gives a maximum of 7,000 euros off the price if a car older than seven years is scrapped. Last November it was announced that it was being extended until June 30th but is currently not available whilst the government decide to extend it or introduce a new scheme. Also, it can take 12-24 months for the purchaser to obtain the grant depending on the autonomous community. Dealers want the discount to be available immediately, at the point of sale. There is a reduction in income tax in Spain of 15% of the price, but in Portugal there is no IVA (VAT) on the sale of zero-emission vehicles and subsidised road tax from 0% upwards as emissions increase.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Mojácar Town Hall organized a run, jog or walk event on the Mojácar Paseo on Saturday, 15th March.
The sun made a welcome appearance for those completing the 5k to raise funds for the Red Cross and everyone enjoyed the giant paella afterwards. Trophies were awarded to the top three in the male and female categories. All three male podium places were taken by Los Bandidos. 1st Steve Murton, 2nd Paul Darcy and 3rd Andrew Hyde.
On Sunday, 16th March a large contingent of around 40 Los Bandidos took part in the Miguel Sin Limites event in Antas, either walking or running. The event raised money for a new prosthetic leg for Miguel and for La Asociación ANDA de Almería, who support people with functional diversity. With over 800 participants, it was a very well organized and friendly event, followed by a paella party afterwards with music, dancing and raffle prizes.
Los Bandidos was set up in June 2018 with a small group running the 5k Mojácar Paseo, and now has road cycling, sea swimming and triathlon groups. All ages, nationalities and speeds are welcome, whether permanent residents or holiday makers. Los Bandidos are keen to integrate and support the local community and continue to support the Red Cross Food Bank. We are very sociable and most sessions are followed by a post-activity coffee, cake or
breakfast. Follow us on Facebook to keep upto-date with our latest activities (https://www. facebook.com/groups/490933409244200). We look forward to seeing you soon.
PAWS PATAS have created a team of volunteers, organising events throughout the year, helping to raise funds for the many animals that are in our care. This year alone, we have already been inundated with new dogs and cats arriving to us (84 dogs plus many cats) and we are only 11 weeks in to 2025! So at the time of writing we have 219 dogs in our care, not forgetting the cats!
We have lots of exciting things taking place throughout the year. The first is our Bingo & Brunch event, taking place at The Snug, Plaza Estrella del Cantal, Paseo del Mediterraneo 261, Mojácar Playa. Join us on Thursday, 3rd April, thereafter on the first Thursday of each month. Arrival time 12pm, eyes down for the first 6 card game at 12.30pm, brunch at 1pm and the second 6 card game at 1.30pm. Just 10 euros for the bingo and brunch from the following selection:-

1 bacon, 1 sausage, 1 egg, toast and beans 2 crumpets or toast with 1 of the followingjam, chocolate spread, cheese, beans or plum tomatoes

She left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 45 greatgrandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren, and a 40-foot hole where the crematorium used to be.
A lost dog strays into a jungle. A lion sees the dog from a distance and thinks, well, this guy looks edible. Never seen his kind before.” The lion starts rushing toward the dog menacingly. The dog notices and begins to panic, but just as he’s about to run, he spots some bones nearby. Thinking quickly, the dog loudly exclaims, “Mmm… that was some good lion meat!” Hearing this, the lion abruptly stops in his tracks and thinks, “Whoa! This guy seems tougher than he looks. I better leave while I still can.” Up in the treetops, a monkey witnesses the entire scene. Realising he could gain favour with the lion the monkey decides to spill the beans. He swings down and tells the lion what really happened. Furious, the lion growls, “Get on my back! We’ll deal with him together!” The lion and monkey rush back toward the dog. Spotting them, the dog panics again but quickly comes up with another idea. He shouts loudly, “Where the hell is that monkey? I told him to bring me another lion an hour ago!”

A man is walking in New York City when he sees a little girl being chased by a very fierce dog. He fights off the dog by hitting its head with a stick and it limps away, so he is sure he has saved the life of the little girl. The girl’s mother rushed over to him and says, “Thank you so much for saving my little girl, you are a true hero. I will tell all the newspapers and there will be headlines like, ‘Brave New Yorker Saves the Life of Young Girl’”. The man replies, “But I’m not a New Yorker”. The mother says, “Instead then, they will read ‘Brave American Saves the Life of a Young Girl’”. The man tells her, “But I’m not an American either”. The mother asks, “What nationality are you?” “I’m from Iran, I’m an Iranian” the man tells her. The next day he looks at the front page of his newspaper and the headline is, “Islamic Extremist Kills American Dog”.
A lawyer was driving along the highway when an armadillo suddenly ran in front of his car. He hit the brakes, picked up the armadillo, and tossed it in the trunk before continuing on his way. A short while later, he got pulled over at a police checkpoint. The officer asked for his licence and registration, then told him to step out of the car and open the trunk. When the trunk popped open, the officer spotted the armadillo and said, “Are you out of your mind? This is a wild animal! If I call the wildlife authorities, you’re in big trouble and you may have to go to prison.” The lawyer responded calmly, “Oh, no, officer, that armadillo is my pet. I’ve raised him since he was just a baby. He’s trained, too. If you let him go, I can whistle twice, and he’ll come right back to me.” The officer, doubtful, said, “Yeah, right. I don’t buy it.” “Go ahead and let him go, and you’ll see,” the lawyer replied. So, the officer picked up the armadillo and released it into the woods. The armadillo bolted, disappearing into the trees. The officer turned back to the lawyer and said, “Alright, call the armadillo back.” The lawyer then asked, “What armadillo?”

Tim decided to tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend. One evening, after the honeymoon, he was organising his golfing equipment. His wife was standing nearby watching him. After a long period of silence, she finally speaks: “Tim, I’ve been thinking, now that we’re married maybe it’s time you quit golfing. You spend so much time on the course. You could probably get a good price for your clubs.” Tim gets this horrified look on his face. She says, “Darling, what’s wrong?” “For a minute there you were beginning to sound like my ex-wife.” “Ex-wife!” she screams, “I didn’t know you were married before!” “I wasn’t,” he replied.
One day, a man came home and was greeted by his wife dressed in stunningly sexy lingerie. “Tie me up,” she purred, “And you can do anything you want.” So he tied her up and went golfing.
My girlfriend and I are trying this whole “long distance relationship” thing. I have to stay 100m away from her at all times. Also, the police say I should stop referring to her as my girlfriend.
The huge college freshman decided to try out for the football team. “Can you tackle?” asked the coach. “Watch this,” said the freshman, who proceeded to run smack into a telephone pole, shattering it to splinters. “Wow,” said the coach. “I’m impressed. Can you run?” “Of course I can run,” said the freshman. He was off like a shot, and, in just over nine seconds, he had run a hundred yard dash. “Great!” enthused the coach. “But can you pass a football?” The freshman hesitated for a few seconds. “Well, sir,” he said, “if I can swallow it, I can probably pass it.”
“Am I the first man you’ve ever loved?” he asked. “Of course you are”, she replied. “Why do men always ask the same question and expect the same answer?”
Two elderly sisters donated $5 to a charity and, to their surprise, won tickets to a football game. Since they had never seen a live football game before, Madge thought the free tickets would provide an excellent opportunity for doing so. “I think so, too,” said Mabel. “Let’s go!” They soon found themselves high in a noisy stadium overlooking a large, grassy expanse. They watched the kickoff and the seemingly endless back-and-forth struggles that comprised the scoreless first half. They enjoyed the band music and cheerleader performance that followed. Then came the second half. When the teams lined up for the second-half kickoff, Madge nudged her sister. “I guess we can go home now, Mabel,” she said. “This is where we came in.”
