Cooler Days Ahead
In our “In the News” section we detail the dates and categories for the anti-flu vaccine. The different dates are to stop everybody arriving at the same time, but if you have missed the dates that apply to your age group or health situation you can, and should, make an appointment to receive the vaccination. The whole aim is to vaccinate as many people as possible. There are different categories of people who can ask for the vaccine after November 13th and we list what they are. After three years of discussions, the Spanish Health Ministry has approved the use of cannabis oils, inhaled or oral drugs in special cases. It has been accepted that in certain situations where conventual treatment does not work, using cannabis is a viable alternative. We have more details in our “In the News” section.
At a major meeting in Seville where the drought situation was discussed, it was agreed that the 12 municipalities in our general ‘Cuevas de Almanzora’ region have to keep observing the restrictions on the use of water until the end of the year, when it will be reviewed. Additionally, in the ‘Sierra de Los Filabres’ zone new municipalities have been added to the list with some of them in our area. The two reservoirs in our province are very short of water, considerably worse than this time last year. We give more details in our “In the News” section.
The proposal that children under the age of 12 can have free glasses or contact lenses has been passed in the Andalucía Parliament. After the next stage it will become law and we will comment on this when it happens.
In a tragic fire in Seville four members of a family died in a fire caused when a mobile phone that was on charge exploded. The Fire service has issued instructions that apply to everyone on how to avoid a fire from a mobile phone or deal with one. There are more details in our “In the News” section.
The ‘Hacienda’, the Spanish Tax department have published the gross income per inhabitant in our province that has been collated from the ‘Renta’ income tax returns made in 2023. There is a wide divide going from 26,993 euros in Almería city coming down to Sorbas, Zurgena, Chirivel and Arboleas where the gross income was between 18,000 and 18,500 euros. The poorest municipality was La Mojonera (between Tíjola and Bacarés) with a gross income of only 15,749 euros. The ones with the highest gross incomes come from industries such as fishing, agriculture, marble and stone or a combination of these. Mojácar in third place, is the odd one out as income comes almost exclusively from tourism. We have more information in our “In the News” section but municipalities with less than 1,000 inhabitants are not included in the league table.
Almería city, Roquetas de Mar, Águilas and other municipalities are now publishing information relating to concerts, ballets and other cultural activities in the run up to Christmas. We have all the details in our “What’s On” section.
Apart from November 1st there are no national fiesta events where official offices and town halls shut. As we move into December, Friday, December 6th is a major national fiesta that commemorates the 92% vote in favour of a written constitution in a referendum that took place on December 6th, 1978. Sunday, December 8th is a religious national fiesta honouring the 1854 Papal edict that the Virgin Mary had an ‘Immaculate Conception’ born free of original sin. As normal, the holiday slides to the Monday.

It’s Flu Jab Time
From October 9th various sectors of the population and those in particular health categories were able to receive the anti-flu (gripe) vaccination, and people over the age of 60 are being offered the anti-Covid jab as well. From November 13th it is recommended for people living with a family member over the age of 60, along with chronically ill persons, women over 6 months pregnant and mothers of babies older than 6 months. These people can also be given the anti-Covid vaccination, and smokers can ask for the anti-flu vaccination. If you have missed your relevant slot, you should still make an appointment at your health centre to receive it and you will not be turned away. The aim of the campaign is to stop people getting the flu, passing it on to others, and cut down on hospital admissions and deaths. It is hoped that 75% of elderly people, pregnant women and health care workers will be vaccinated, and 60% of children and chronically ill people. The Junta de Andalucía Health Department have purchased more than 2 million doses of the anti-flu vaccine at a cost of 20 million euros. On October 9th, the Spanish Ministry of Health announced that if getting the flu becomes a major health problem, they would consider mandating the use of masks as they did with Covid 19. There was a considerable drop in people getting the flu when people were wearing masks because of Covid. The Andalucía Health Department have a chart that shows all the recommended vaccinations from birth upwards that can be seen online or on a poster at medical centres. From May this year, the anti-shingles vaccine, ‘La Vacuna contra herpes Zóster’ called ‘Shingrix’, which is two doses two months apart, has been available for those who are 65 and then progressively for older people. Your health centre will have more information.
New Drink-Driving Levels
The PSOE ruling party (roughly a labour party) in the Spanish Parliament hold a majority with the backing of several small political parties in Catalonia. They voted with the PSOE to approve and pass the new drink-driving regulations, taking the legal alcohol limit for all drivers down to 0.2gr/l in blood from the present 0.5gr/l. The PP (roughly
a conservative party) voted against it as they consider that there are alternative methods such as a driver education campaign, harsher driving bans for those who have to appear in court, and the introduction of ‘alcolocks’ that stop a vehicle being started if the driver blows into the device whilst over the limit. The VOX (right wing party) voted against as well, stating that the regulations would damage the motor industry claiming that it would affect car sales. The regulations will now go to the Spanish Senate to be approved and if this is agreed, a date for the introduction of the new levels will follow in due course.
Potable Water Restrictions
On Thursday, October 10th there was a major meeting in Málaga of the ‘Comisión de Gestión de la Sequía de la demarcación hidrográfica de las Cuencas Mediterráneas Andaluzas’, the body that deals with the drought crisis in Andalucía. Representatives from the Andalucía Parliament, syndicates, agriculturalists and ecologists discussed the present restrictions on the use of potable water and the introduction of further ones. Various zones were picked out for discussion including the Cuevas del Almanzora one that applies to most of our area. It was agreed that the restrictions introduced last February of a limit of 200 litres per person per day will continue until the end of the year when it will be reviewed. The present list of municipalities was stated to be Carboneras, Los Gallardos, Garrucha, Mojácar, Albox, Antas, Arboleas, Cuevas del Almanzora, Huércal-Overa, Taberno, Vera and Zurgena. Additionally, other municipalities now have to observe the restrictions that are in the Sierra de Los Filabres zone that apply to Lucainéna de las Torres, Turre, Cantoria, Fines, Lubrín, Macael, Olula del Río, Oria, Partaloa, Purchena and Serón, amongst others. Limits were also set for agriculturalists. It was confirmed that potable water cannot be used for garden irrigation, car washing at home (allowed at petrol stations), the use in fountains unless they completely recycle the same water, municipal gardens with some exceptions, municipal street cleaning using water, public showers, and irrigating golf courses. Topping up pools following evaporation to a level that allows

the skimmers to operate is allowed, as otherwise pools will become a health hazard. It is recommended that “grey” water in the home from baths, showers and washing up is used for garden irrigation. Not running washing machines or dishwashers unless absolutely necessary is another recommendation. The consumption of water in most parts of our province is given as being only 130 litres per person per day so the 200-litre limit is far higher! In matters like these, town halls issue a ‘bando’ which is an official notification of a regulation applying to all residents. This has not been the case in Mojácar.
Torrecárdenas Car Park
Tenders for the construction of the new multistorey car park at the Torrecárdenas hospital are stated to be announced shortly and a contract awarded before the end of the year. It will have six floors, 2,000 parking spaces and a restaurant / café on the top floor. The budget price is 19.5 million euros with a construction phase of 24 months. Unfortunately, this will mean that the area where there are 450 parking spaces at present will no longer be available. Almería city council and the hospital are looking for ways to overcome this problem for visitors and staff to park elsewhere, with quick access to the hospital, which has been described as “mission impossible”. Suggestions are alternative parking on adjoining land owned by the city, beefed up public transport, and reactivating the free shuttle service from the Torrecárdenas shopping centre where hospital parking is available.
On Remand Without Bail
On Sunday, October 13th, coastguards in Almería were alerted by the cargo ship ‘Nsted Maersk’ that there was a boat heading towards Almería with would be immigrants. The boat was located 52 nautical miles off the coast opposite Garrucha, and the patrol boat rescued 29 people. In the boat were three bodies of people who had died. All of them were taken to Almería port and it became apparent that the three dead people showed clear signs of violence that is considered to have resulted in their deaths. Two people who were in charge of the boat were arrested and charged with murder and offences against human rights relating to all
the people on board. A judge ordered that the two men were sent to prison on remand without bail. A spokesperson from the National Police stated that the 29 people rescued had given statements as to what had happened to the three people who died.
Christopher Columbus - Jewish Origin
Forensic investigators from the University of Granada led by the professor of Forensic Medicine, José Antonio Lorente, originating from Olula del Río, have confirmed “definitively” that the bones allegedly those of Christopher Columbus who died in Spain in 1506 and finished up in Seville Cathedral in 1898, belong to him. A documentary feature film ‘Columbus’s DNA: The True Ancestry’ was broadcast on the Spanish television channel RTVE on October 12th, formerly ‘Christopher Columbus Day’ after more than twenty years of research. José Lorente had already discussed the findings at an event held at the Royal National Academy of Medicine in Madrid, described by their President, Eduardo Díaz-Rubio, as “A historic day for science”. Lorente explained that in the first studies of 2003, 2004 and 2005 there was talk of a “possible compatibility” that these bones were from Christopher Columbus, although it was a low probability because there was not enough DNA. “Today it has been possible to verify it with new technologies that the previous theory that the remains of Christopher Columbus are buried in Seville cathedral is definitively correct”. He explained that the DNA results were exact and totally conclusive and had been confirmed by different laboratories using DNA from the skeletal remains of Christopher Columbus, his son Hernando, and his “brother” Diego (who is in fact a second cousin). They are all buried in the cathedral so locating their bones was easy. There has always been a claim that Columbus is buried in the Dominican Republic in a lead coffin discovered in 1877 in the Santo Domingo Cathedral, but the bones there and in Seville are only a partial skeleton. According to Lorente, it is quite possible that both sets of bones belong to Christopher Columbus but the ones in the Dominican Republic have not been subject to the detailed analysis that has taken place in Granada. The research led by Lorente sheds light on the origin of the navigator,
In the
and there have been several theories, although the most widespread and internationally accepted one is that he was from Genoa (Italy), which Lorente totally discounts. There are numerous others, suggesting that he could be Portuguese, from Catalonia or Galicia, from Guadalajara, from Ibiza or Mallorca, and that he was Norwegian! Lorente concludes from DNA analysis that Columbus was almost certainly of Sephardic Jewish ancestry who converted to Christianity to avoid persecution and obtain funding from Catholic monarchs. His most likely birthplace is the Mediterranean arc (a belt running up the East of Spain) or the Balearic Islands, then ruled by the Aragon royal family. One Spanish researcher has steadfastly maintained for years that Columbus was born in Valencia to a family of Jewish silk weavers. Lorente cannot prove or disprove this claim but he considers that it fits in with his findings of where Columbus was born and could well be correct. The research has conclusively proved that Columbus was Spanish, not Italian!
Better Interest Rates
Christine Lagarde, the President of the Central European Bank, has lowered the interest rate again, this time down to 3.25%. The bank considers that this is possible as inflation has come down slightly and there are signs of increasing economic recovery in the Eurozone. When this interest comes down this is followed by a reduction in the Euribor rate that affects mortgages. It was 3% at the end of September, 2.8% towards the end of October and is expected to fall to 2.5% (hopefully) by the end of the year. The other side of the coin is that banks will reduce the interest they pay on savings accounts.
Mojácar Clean-Up Proposals
At the instigation of the ‘PSOE’ opposition party in Mojácar it has been agreed that anglers who fish from beaches are obliged to clear up all fishing items when they leave the beach including fish hooks that are dangerous for children and pets. The town hall has also reminded residents that very large items that are left alongside rubbish containers to be taken away, should only be left there on the 1st and 16th of the month when they will be collected the next day. They cannot
be left so that they restrict road access, nor stop pedestrians walking by. Green bottle containers are provided by the company ‘Ecovidrio’ and Mojácar will be given more of these, at strategic places. The town hall will take part in the “Ecovidrio Green Flags Campaign” that rewards municipalities that collect the largest amounts of glass items with a ‘Green Flag’. María Gracia Alarcón, Mojácar’s Councillor for Tourism, is enthusiastic about this initiative and is personally committed to the campaign. She has stated, “We are very involved in this action and we want to encourage all residents and visitors of Mojácar to actively participate. Glass recycling not only protects our natural environment, but also makes Mojácar a more sustainable and attractive tourist destination. The collaboration of local businesses is also crucial to the success of this campaign and Mojácar Town Hall invites all bars and restaurants to join this initiative and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.”
Chinese Car Tariffs
12 months ago, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU, announced an investigation into the price of Chinese electric cars sold in the EU and how they were dominating the market. The EU claim that the Chinese government are subsidising the car manufacturers from every part used in the assembly to the whole car. The conclusion was that other car manufacturers could not compete and import tariffs were a good idea. These are already in place in Turkey, Brazil, the United States and India. Last July a tax of 10% was put in place in the EU, but with proposals for major additional import taxes of 17% going up to 38% for Chinese manufacturers who were not sympathetic to the problems their cars were making in the EU. The additional import taxes had to be agreed by member states, but Ursula von der Leyen has accepted a majority approval because many countries are not in favour. The vote was 10 countries in favour, 12 abstained from voting and 5 voted against the tariffs. The top 38% has been reduced to 35% but Tesla has an additional tax of 7.8% on their cars made in China. The tariffs officially came into place on October 30th for a “proposed” period of five years but there is another vote in November. Germany and
In the News
Hungary voted against the tariffs because they sell the most cars in China. Spain abstained from voting because Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister, is in talks with the Chinese government to find an agreed reduction in car retail prices and secure investment in “green energy” for Spain and we expand on this in an article. China has threatened high import taxes as a reprisal on European cars, champagne from France, and pork products from Spain, which are Spain’s largest importer at present. Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao visited Berlin, Rome and Brussels in mid-September, where he met with Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis to try to straighten out the matter through dialogue. Despite the official five-year tariffs, Brussels has left the door open for negotiation with Beijing to find a solution. Following the EU decision to introduce the tariffs, Wang Wentao stated “China firmly opposes the EU’s final draft resolution, but also takes note of the EU’s political will to continue to resolve the issue through negotiations.” The stakes are high for China as they need to have mass exports of electric vehicles because they have set up huge factories that are not operating at full capacity and they have saturated their home market for electric cars.
Free Glasses For Children
Adelante Andalucia is a small political party in the Andalucía Parliament with only two MPs and no MPs at national level. 12 months ago, they put forward a proposal for free glasses and contact lenses for children under the age of 12 and this has been adopted by all the other political parties. Statistics show that the percentage of young children in Andalucía who have glasses or contact lenses is 6% below the national average. This is taken as showing that some children who needed them were not being taken to opticians because of the cost. The proposal was passed unanimously and will now go to the Parliament in Madrid. It is possible that the proposal is adopted in all of Spain, not just Andalucía.
High Deaths of Lynx Cats
In our September magazine we explained the measures taken to increase the numbers of the Iberian lynx cats. We mentioned that a major problem was deaths from traffic accidents.
Very unfortunately, at the start of October, ‘Ecologists in Action’ reported that three Iberian lynxes had been run over and killed on roads in Andalucía in a five-day period, taking the total since February up to 41. The organisation state that black spots have been identified for some time now and the Junta de Andalucía has to review and adapt road signs where the lynx are particularly vulnerable. Reducing speed is a good way of avoiding fatal accidents.
Exploding Batteries
In another news item we explain how a phone left on charge exploded and four people died. The US hurricanes Helene and Milton has highlighted a problem with lithium-ion batteries covered with salt water in the floods. The Florida Fire Service has described the situation as being a “time bomb” with 48 fires involving electric scooters and golf buggies and 11 ones in electric / hybrid cars. The exposure to salt water can result in a fire, and in some cases, a long time after the flooding has stopped. Owners of electric / hybrid cars are being advised to move their vehicles outdoors in the open air, above expected flooding levels if possible. If a battery has been under water there must be no attempt to recharge the battery, which needs disconnecting by a qualified technician.

charges to bring down a 60m high structure at the former power station belonging to Endesa in Carboneras. It took six seconds for the explosives to be detonated in sequence and residents were warned that this was taking place, with roads and other areas closed. Endesa explained in a press release that of the 55,800 tonnes of waste generated so far with the dismantling of the plant, 90.31% has been recycled so it is considered “zero waste”. In addition, more than 1,000 items from the plant have been donated to local entities and organisations of different kinds, such as educational centres where furniture and laboratory equipment have been delivered. The entire dismantling process is being carried out in a calculated 546,000 man-hours project, and of the current 260 people who are working on the dismantling, 200 of them come from Carboneras. After this blasting the next milestones is the blasting of the boilers, the tallest structures, which will take place towards the end of this year and the beginning of next year.
Mojácar Dog Friendly Beach
Mojácar town hall are intending to designate the Playa del Perulejo beach near the Macenas tower as a place where dogs are allowed during the summer season. It is hoped that all the necessary permissions will be forthcoming and the authorisation will be in place until December 2027. The aim is that there will be showers, a supply of bags to collect excrement, and bins to put them in. This beach has been chosen as it is not a nesting area for birds, does not have protected flora, it has minimal vehicle traffic and it is not normally used for bathing. The Cala de la Invencible near Villaricos is the only authorised dog friendly beach at present in our area.
Sales of Second-Hand Cars
The average age of cars in Spain continues to be close to 15, and the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) is continually stressing that if older cars are not regularly serviced, they can break down. Also, older cars lack the safety features of new cars so accidents can be more severe as regards injuries and deaths. This September, the portal ‘Ideauto’ recorded a total of 179,359 used cars sold in Spain. The average price of a used vehicle was 20,647
euros which is a decrease of 0.6% compared to the same month last year, according to the sales portal ‘Coches.net’. The average sale price of diesel-powered used vehicles showed a drop of 5.6% down to 17,328 euros. On the other hand, the year-on-year fall in the price of second-hand petrol cars was more moderate at 0.6%, so the average sale price in September was 20,128 euros. Hybrids and electric vehicles average prices fell by 3.1% to 32,570 euros but the average price is almost twice that of a diesel car. Regarding supply, Coches.net highlights that electric and alternative energy vehicles continue to grow in market share, and in September they represented 13.9% of the supply with a year-on-year growth of 40.5%. This is considered to be partly because many owners of electric cars regret buying them and are getting rid of them! Diesel-powered vehicles account for 45.5% of the share, with a drop of 2.3% compared to the same month in 2023, and petrol fuelled cars amounted to 38.7%, a growth of 10%. The most popular makes were Volkswagen and then Seat, BMW, Mercedes and Audi. By models, the most sales were the Golf, Leon, 3 Series, Class A and A3.
The Tourist Data Row
In Spain, from December 2nd, hotels, travel agents, car rental companies, campsites and holiday accommodation companies or agents have to collect a very comprehensive list of information for each tourist over the age of 14 when a Royal Decree comes into force. These include the complete address, mobile phone number, email address, the relationship between travellers, dates of stay and the means of payment such as credit card details. This information has to be provided to the Ministry of the Interior, as well as to the National Police and the Civil Guard police through a new platform designed by the Ministry. The Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT) is vigorously complaining and state that the start date has been put off twice because the system does not work. On October 2nd, Tomás Komuda, the President of the Association of Travel Agencies of Almeria, met with the territorial delegate in Almeria of the Andalucía Ministry of Tourism to convey the “deep concern of the sector
In the News
in the face of the imminent entry into force of the Royal Decree”. Tomás Komuda asked the Andalucía authorities to put pressure on the Ministry of the Interior to stop the introduction until a complete review could be undertaken. The general view of professionals in the tourist industry is that the way they have to forward the data, which will take a long time to collect manually, is completely flawed.
Tourist Rental Properties in Communities
The Spanish Civil Chamber of the High Court has recently announced their judgement regarding apartments or houses in a community of owners being let to tourists. They accept that there is a conflict between normal owners and those that rent their properties to tourists and that rental prices in general can go up as a result. This can exclude first time renters trying to get on the rental ladder. They conclude that if 60% of owners vote against proposals that properties are let to tourists this is sufficient to prohibit their use. Communities of owners have to observe the “Horizontal Property Regulations” and the 2019 amended regulations allow for a “limit” on tourist rentals. The court ruled that the word “limit” does not exclude a “prohibition”. The court noted that the latest report by the ‘Exceltur’ organisation, corresponding to the first quarter of 2024, revealed that the number of homes let to tourists in the 25 main Spanish cities had soared by 25% in the previous 12 months to almost 287,000 units which was a new all-time high, easily surpassing the previous record set in the first quarter of 2020 with 257,155 units. Last December, the same court ruled that this type of tourist accommodation is considered an economic activity and the statutes of a community of owners can expressly establish the prohibition of businesses such as offices, consultancies, clinics, hair and beauty salons and other commercial uses in homes. The court unanimously agreed that if the statutes ban businesses this also applies to tourist rentals since they are “a business; commercial in nature and generating monetary income”. This particularly applies to companies that set up tourist accommodation in apartments or houses. If the statutes prohibit businesses there can be no vote that allows tourist accommodation. The two judgements from the court will lay out the framework if appeals are made to a lower court in the future.
Tesla Car Sales
If you want to sell more of almost everything, a good way is to reduce the price. Last July, Tesla announced a “Tesla Boost” campaign in Spain with a discount of 3,290 euros off the price of their Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, the two most popular electric cars in their range. The Tesla Model 3, which has 283 hp of power and 554 km of range, is now available for 38,200 euros. In addition, Tesla point out that it is possible to reduce the price to 26,900 euros, thanks to the grant from the Moves III Scheme of up to 7,000 euros (if you scrap a car more than seven years old), another 3,000 euros from the 15% reduction in personal income tax, and Tesla’s contribution of 1,210 euros. We explained how the Move III scheme works last month. In September, Tesla sold 776 cars ordered in July and August, putting them in first place and knocking the Dacia Sandero from the top sales numbers with 200 more cars. In 2023 Tesla were only in seventh place but up to the end of September this year, total sales were 5,470. These sales come at a time when the sale of electric cars in Spain is almost stagnant. Analysts are waiting to see if Tesla can maintain their boost in sales during October or the Dacia Sandero goes back to first place.
A Tragic Fire
A couple and their two children aged 16 and 20 died in a house fire in Seville on Sunday, October 6th. Fire investigation experts concluded that the fire started in a mobile phone that was on charge
In the
on a sofa on the ground floor and the battery had exploded which caused the fire. Unfortunately, all the windows on the first floor had rejas (ornamental bars), which is very common in Seville, so the family could not escape. They needed a key to unlock a door to an outside terrace that they could not get because it was downstairs. 2,500 people attended a funeral mass led by the Bishop of Seville and large numbers went to the cemetery. The fire service stated that mobile phones left on charge should not be put on soft furniture, near curtains or other inflammable items and they should not be left on charge when they are fully charged. They recommend charging when the battery has fallen to 20% and stopping charging when the battery is at 80% as this allows a safety margin if for some reason the phone gets hot if (for instance) it is left in the sun. They stress that phones should not be left on charge overnight when people are sleeping. If a phone has caught fire, water has no effect and their advice is to try to get it outside using an implement such as a metal dustpan. If this is impossible, the door to the room should be shut to try to contain the fire and the fire services called out by ringing 112.
Desalinated Water
The third Vice-President and Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, has promised that work in Almería province for the increase in desalinated water is well underway. The Almeria senator of the PP, Miguel Ángel Castellón, complained that “after six years she has not been able to undertake the repair of the Bajo Almanzora desalination plant at Cuevas, in the province of Almeria”. Teresa Ribera has defended the Government’s ability to support the Junta de Andalucía, which “is the one who is competent in water matters”. She pointed out that from 2012 to 2018 when the government was run by the PP political party no work was done to repair it during this six-year period. In February of this year, the agricultural transformation company ‘Tragsa’ was authorised to finish the work for the protection of the plant against flooding and this, and the major repair work being undertaken by ‘Sacyr’, is costing 17.6 billion euros. Work nearby involves the extension of the channelling of
the Canalejas watercourse by an approximate 1km and the modification of the AL-8106 road from Villaricos to La Mulería, with the construction of a viaduct. The plant, which cost 100 million euros, was opened in 2011 but totally wrecked in the floods in 2012. The repair work scheduled to be completed “urgently” in 2025 has been put back for “additional work not apparent at the time repairs started”. Agriculturalists who need water for irrigation have proposed that they finance another desalination plant nearby and water for this use does not have to be refined to the same level as domestic water. Last year, the Carboneras desalination plant supplied 41.8 billion m3 and Acuamed, who run the plant, invoiced 27.6 billion euros. Acuamed have stated that they propose to take Galasa to court to recover the shortfall of 70 million euros currently outstanding. Galasa is 53% owned by the Almería ‘diputación (county council) and 47% by 23 participating municipalities. They have had serious debts and no profit for a long time and have been bailed out twice. Nearly 40% of the water purchased by Galasa in 2023 was lost in leaking pipework and of the 14 billion m3 purchased, only 6.2 billion m3 was billed to customers.

From a range of information, particularly the annual ‘Renta’ (income tax return) that has to be completed each year by the end of June, the Hacienda (Spanish Tax Authority) publish the average gross income figures in all municipalities. The latest figures relate to 2022 because the ‘Renta’ for this year was not available until mid2023 when the calculations could be started. There will be a slight variation in gross wages for 2024 but the league table is still considered accurate. The published data ignores municipalities with less than 1,000 inhabitants, and workers in Almería city had an average gross income of 26,993 euros, the richest municipality in the province by far, followed by Pulpí and Mojácar. In Pulpí it was 25,796 euros, in Mojácar 25,093 euros, Carboneras 24,589 euros, Huércal de Almería 24,520 euros, Macael 23,869 euros, Olula del Río 23,827 euros, Roquetas de Mar 23,466 euros, Vera 23,306 euros and Tíjola with 23,218 euros. These make up the 10 richest
municipalities. In the poorest municipalities, workers in Sorbas earned an average of 18,447 euros, Zurgena 18,427 euros, Chirivel 18,132 euros and Arboleas had 18,053 euros gross income. The municipality with the lowest income was La Mojonera (between Tíjola and Bacarés) with a gross income of only 15,749 euros. The difference between the gross salary in La Mojonera and Almería city is the large amount of 11,244 euros. The ones with highest incomes have an industry that can be agriculture, fishing, marble and stone, or a collection of several industries. Mojácar is the odd one out with no prevalent industry but a good income from tourism. At the national level, the town of Huesa (Jaén) in Andalucía, is the poorest municipality in Spain, with an average gross income of only 13,658 euros. Nationally, Pozuelo de Alarcón in (Madrid) led the table in 2022, for the fourth consecutive year as the municipality in Spain with the highest average declared gross income of 85,323 euros, which represents an increase of 6.3% compared to the 2021 figures. This municipality is followed by the Balearic Valldemossa village and the Madrid Boadilla del Monte town which occupy the second and third position, with 67,527 and 67,325 euros respectively. The highest average gross income in our province in Almería city is 58,240 less than Pozuelo de Alarcón!
Cannabis Approved by Health Ministry
After three years of proposals and studies, the Spanish Health Ministry has approved the use of cannabis oils, inhaled or oral drugs in special cases. They have announced “Scientific evidence has shown a variable degree of benefit of cannabis and its extracts in some therapeutic indications, and these formulas may constitute a personalised alternative when conventional treatments fail.” Cannabis products will only be able to be obtained through hospital pharmacies for patients in their care, or specialists dealing with the chronic conditions that will include spasticity due to multiple sclerosis (stiffness and muscle spasms associated with this disease); severe forms of refractory epilepsy (certain types of epilepsy that do not respond to conventional treatments); nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy; and chronic refractory pain (persistent pain that is not
relieved by standard treatments). The cannabis compounds will have to be included in a new ‘Register of Standardised Cannabis Preparations’ under the management of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products. An association for the use of cannabis for medical reasons considers that the new proposals do not go far enough and going to see a specialist to obtain the medication often involves a long wait. They consider that family doctors should able to prescribe cannabis as well, in patients that fall into the categories. The Spanish High Court has confirmed the sentences from a court in Almería city following an appeal. In March 2021, a maritime
Almería Residents
The Institute of Statistics have published figures collated from the details provided by municipalities in our province as of January 1st, 2024. The total population (of people on the ‘padrón’, so registered inhabitants) has risen to 753,364 that is 13,823 more people than on January 1st, 2023, an increase of 1.8 percent. 51.2% of the population of Almeria province are men (385,696) and 48.8% are women (367,668). 77.5% are Spanish and 22.5% are of foreign nationality. In other words, just over a fifth of the inhabitants of Almeria province are nonSpanish and this percentage has increased slightly by 0.78%. Almeria capital continues to be the most populated municipality with 200,665 inhabitants, an increase of 2,221. Roquetas de Mar has 105,886 inhabitants, which represents an increase of 3,226 people compared to 2023 figures and its population has grown by 3.14%. It continues to be the second most populated municipality in the province
No Water
In Almería province there are two reservoirs at Cuevas and Benímar in the Alpujarras. Both of them are now very short of water and at the end of September the Cuevas reservoir held 13 cubic hectometres down from almost 25 cubic hectometres on September 20th, 2023. The one at Benímar had only 5.27 cubic hectometres compared to nearly 7 cubic hectometres last year. The total capacity of the dams that supply irrigation water and some for residential areas,
is 161 cubic hectometres at Cuevas and 63 cubic hectometres at Benímar. In percentage terms, the water currently stored in these two reservoirs barely exceeds 8%, compared to 15% in September 2023. The Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Growers, COAG, in Almeria, has demanded the implementation of direct aid and exceptional measures, urgently and immediately, to rescue agricultural farms devastated by extreme drought in the interior of the province. Their spokesperson has stated that “Specifically, the harvests of rainfed crops, especially almonds and cereals, and extensive livestock populations, are in a catastrophic situation”. The Ministry of Agriculture has replied that three more drought decrees and strategies such as ‘Drought Plus’ have been approved. Work on 27 projects have already been completed, 14 are in execution, and the remainder are in the planning and processing phases.
Dog Custody
In July 2023 legislation came into force that related to animals such as domestic pets. Pet shops were given a period after which they could only sell fish, not puppies, kittens, gerbils, hamsters, ferrets or mice, which is now applicable. Breeders have to be registered, comply with regulations and be regularly inspected. Animals in a domestic situation were upgraded from being “things” to being entities that were recognised and protected, and to a lesser extent than children they could be part of a separation or divorce agreement. In the first
case of its kind to come before a court in Madrid, a woman separated from her partner complained through her lawyer that agreed custody had not taken place for 10 months and he was not consulting her on matters of health, food, visits to the vet, and vaccinations. The dog named ‘Heman’ is a Siberian husky that the couple bought in 2020, and when the relationship ended, they decided by mutual verbal and written agreement to have him in their homes for two weeks each, with some flexibility if necessary for work reasons. The woman told the court that her ex-partner decided to break the verbal and written agreement because of a third person, who could not comprehend the common bond. She told the court, “For me, as we don’t have children, my dog is like my son, part of the family, one of the most important things in my life.” The name of her ex-partner is the contact detail on the microchip register, he was listed on the purchase document as the purchaser and is recorded as the owner at a vet’s practice, but the court ruled that this was irrelevant. They stated that between the woman and the dog, “An intense sentimental bond was created, since they lived together since he was a puppy”. The judge also noted that the woman had been seriously ill during the 10-month period and the possibility of never seeing ‘Heman’ again had caused her additional stress. Following oral testimony by both the man and the women, the judge postponed his verdict whilst he considered all the facts and the animal law. His written verdict was that the man was ordered to restore the custody agreement, consult with the woman regarding matters of general concern, and share necessary expenses which was completely agreeable to the woman. He was fined 600 euros for moral damages and ordered to pay the court case costs, and the court judgement is not subject to an appeal. Lawyers fighting for animal rights in Spain have just come together to create the ‘Animal Advocacy Network’, an association made up of lawyers specialising in animal law countrywide. The woman’s lawyer commented that “A family judge doesn’t have to like children, they have to apply the law and it is now the same with animals and pets. Judges and courts have to follow the new law and penalties for non-compliance.”
Electric Ships and Boats
Maritime transport is one of the most efficient ways of moving goods and people, and it transports 90% of all goods, with only 3%-4% emissions of greenhouse gases. Nevertheless, European legislation requires a reduction in emissions, and in Spain, the Ministry of Transport is preparing a National Action Plan for the decarbonisation of the maritime sector. One objective is the use of biofuels of similar chemical properties to fossil fuels.
Elena Seco, director of the Association of Spanish Shipowners, has stated, “We work in one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise,” and according to the International Maritime Organization 99.6% of the fuels used in 2023 by the world’s merchant fleet were of fossil origin. She explains that we can use biofuels and efficiency measures and these are the only real short-term options to significantly reduce emissions, but the supply of these new fuels is limited, and they cost a lot more money.
Another solution is using batteries to power electric motors that drive the propellers. We have commented before that battery technology is improving all the time with batteries that are lighter, smaller and more powerful. China, the world leader in the production of batteries, has built a 100% electric ship christened “Green Water”, that can carry 700 20ft containers weighing 10,000 tonnes and is operating between the ports of Shanghai and Nanjing, which are about 300km apart. The company, Cosco Shipping Lines, claim that travelling at 6.5 knots (about 12km/h) in calm seas, the range goes up to 700km.
The Australian Incat company in Tasmania is building the “Incat Hull 096”, an electric ferry, 130m by 31.5m. The batteries will weigh 287 tonnes with a capacity of 40MW, and the ferry can travel at 25 knots (about 90km/h) for two hours with 2,100 passengers and 225 cars. The Rio de la Plata company Buquebús intends to have it operational next year and link Buenos Aires (Argentina) with Colonia (Uruguay) in a journey time of just over an hour.
In Norway, at the forefront of electric vehicles, they launched their first electric ferry in 2015 and already have 70 in operation. Companies sailing ferries from the UK to France are very interested. One UK ferry owner states that the technology already exists and in a short time we have seen impressive advances. Powerful batteries with a longer range will mean the technology will explode in the coming years.
The first electric ferry in Spain, the Cap de Barbaria, is operational between Ibiza and Formentera by the Baleària company. The ship measures 82m by 15.5m with the capacity to carry 350 passengers and 14 lorries. Javier Cervera, director of Energy Transition at Baleària, says that they still have a problem. At present, there is no spare renewable energy capacity in either of the islands and they have to charge the batteries with diesel engines. Cervera states, “Hopefully, before too long, we will be able to do the entire route and charging in the ports with renewable electricity.” Cervera also chairs the ‘Net-Zero Mar Alliance’ that comprises 55 partners in Spain working on green alternatives for maritime transport.
Elena Seco considers that all-electric ships are perfect for small vessels that make short journeys. According to data from the consulting firm IHS Markit, the global merchant fleet in 2024 is made up of 64,953 ships, and figures from a classification company are that there are 207 purely electric operational vessels and another 47 on the order books, but this is only 0.004%. Strides in battery technology are the key for electric boats, ships (and cars).
So Now You Know...
The Bumblebee Bat
Weighing in at 0.05 to 0.07 ounces, with a head-tobody length of 1.14 to 1.29 inches and a wingspan of 5.1 to 5.7 inches, the bumblebee bat, also known as Kitti’s hog-nosed bat, is the smallest mammal in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. To see this tiny bat for yourself, you’d have to visit one of a select few limestone caves on the Khwae Noi River in Kanchanaburi Province of southwest Thailand. They emerge at dawn for about 18 minutes to feed, and come out again at dusk for about 30 minutes. In between they are immobile in torpor, a metabolically slowed-down state that saves energy.
Anne Frank and Martin Luther King
Anne Frank is an iconic symbol of the Nazi brutality of World War II in the 1940s while Martin Luther King, Jr. was the face and voice of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. The two events seem so far apart in history but both of them were born in 1929; January 15th for Martin Luther King, and June 12th for Anne Frank. Although Germanborn, the Jewish Anne Frank kept a secret diary documenting her life in hiding amid Nazi persecution during the German occupation of the Netherlands. She continued writing regularly until her last entry on 1 August 1944 and died in March 1945 at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
Giraffes and Lightning
Statistically, giraffes are 30 times more likely to get hit by lightning than people. There are only five well-documented fatal lightning strikes on giraffes between 1996 and 2010, but the population of the species is calculated to have been 140,000 during this time period. Mathematically this is 0.003 deaths from lightning per 1,000 giraffes each year that is thirty times the equivalent fatality rate for humans. From 2006 to 2021 there were 444 lightning strike deaths in the United States, and males are four times more likely than females to be struck by lightning. The average age of a person struck by lightning is thirty-seven.
Dogs
From fossil evidence it appears that dogs were domesticated around 23,000 years ago and were the only animals domesticated during the Pleistocene Epoch, also known as the Ice Age. However, in 2021, a research study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) concluded from DNA evidence that domestication began in Siberia up to 26,000 years ago. These dogs evolved from an extinct species of wolf and migrated around the globe along with their humans. Some of the oldest-known breeds are the Arctic Spitz breeds, Middle Eastern Sighthounds and several breeds of Chinese dogs.
Charles Darwin’s Chair
Charles Darwin (1809–1882) was a renowned British naturalist and biologist, very famous for his ideas about biological evolution from observations on a voyage to the Galapagos Islands, which he called “Natural Selection” published in his book ‘On the Origin of Species’, although this was extremely controversial. A lesser-known fact is that he wanted to be able to easily move round his office and laboratory where he kept all his specimens. In the 1840s he fitted wheels to an armchair he had and he called his invention “a wooden armchair on wheels”. Consequently, he is considered to be the inventor of the modern office chair.
Radioactive Bananas
Bananas are slightly radioactive because they are very rich in potassium with the natural isotope potassium-40. However, a human body contains around 16mg of potassium-40, meaning you’re around 280 times more radioactive than a banana. Any excess potassium-40 you gain from a banana is excreted out within a few hours. Many isotopes and radioactive elements occur naturally in the environment, where they get into plants and water. Every time a person eats food or drinks water, they may be imbibing tiny amounts of radioactive isotopes. Apart from potassium-40 in human bodies there are trace amounts of carbon 14.
Spain and China
In our ‘In the News’ section we explain how the EU proposal to put hefty import taxes on Chinese vehicles only had 10 votes in favour. 12 member states abstained and five voted against the sanctions.
Spain was one of the countries that abstained, and Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, is in favour of dialogue to resolve the issue and is firmly encouraging China to invest in Spain. For a long time, China has been setting up factories in various countries particularly in their “Green transition” industries that concentrate on electric vehicles, batteries, electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen and solar panels. Major investment has taken place in Brazil, Germany, Vietnam, Mexico, Turkey and Hungary, and Spain is another important country.
Chinese foreign investment target for 2024 is 73.8 billion dollars (67.5 billion euros) and China considers that they are in the forefront of technology, have highly efficient production techniques making expansion abroad economically attractive. Their home market for electric vehicles has become saturated and they need foreign buyers. In 2025, with the Spanish truck company Ebro, the Chery Chinese car manufacturer will manufacture their electric car ‘Omodo’ in the former Nissan factory in Barcelona. Other Chinese related companies in Spain manufacture batteries, wind turbines and solar panels.
Recently, Sánchez, Marta Blanco, Minister for International Affairs, and Spanish business leaders went to Shanghai for the second time for discussions with Chinese industry leaders, and Sánchez met with Xi Jinping, the powerful Chinese President. Sánchez described Spain as being an “attractive and safe destination for your investments”. He told car manufacturers that he proposed, “A negotiated solution within the framework of the WTO (World Trade Organisation) that avoids a trade escalation with import tariffs from both countries that benefits no one”. He explained that Spain is confident that its proposal for a way out of the crisis generated by the EU’s decision to impose high tariffs on Chinese electric cars will prevail. He told journalists that China
fully understands their electric cars are subsidised by their government and compete unfairly with European cars. Also, in a threatened “tit for tat” tariff war, China has proposed an import tax on Spanish pork products that earn suppliers 1.3 billion euros annually.
Elisa García, Executive Director of the ‘ICEX-Invest in Spain’ organisation, has stated that China is very interested in greater links with Spain because of the quality of life, the size of the market, access to other markets (particularly the EU), infrastructure, the integration of Chinese expatriates, logistics platforms and the availability of highly trained professionals. 2023 was the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Spain being restored. Sánchez came back from Shanghai with a signed proposal from Envision, a leading Chinese company in renewable energies. This will entail an investment of 900 million euros to build a factory in Spain producing electrolysers essential for the production of renewable green hydrogen, and Spanish companies will also be involved in the project. Employment estimates are that there will be jobs for 1,000 direct and indirect workers. The aim of this and other proposals is that goods made in Spain with a Chinese partnership could also be exported to Latin America.
Apart from trade, Sánchez inaugurated the opening of a ‘Cervantes Institute’ in Shanghai that is responsible for teaching people Spanish. There are already 50,000 graduates in Hispanic studies in China from the Beijing Cervantes Institute that opened in 2006, and 60,000 people are studying for a Hispanicbased career. An undetermined number of Chinese study Spanish privately as a way of communicating with Latin America.
Scrapping Abusive Interest Rates
The Spanish Minister for the Economy and his department have to come up with measures that curtail interest rates when they are excessive. This is in accordance with an EU Directive that asks all member states to survey how financial institutions fix their interest rates and the percentage charged, and introduce legislation where necessary. There is a particular concern regarding “fast money” companies who lend money for a short period and if it is not repaid charge exorbitantly high rates of compound interest that can finish up with a 3,000% to 4,000% debt over the initial amount loaned.
The aim is to “Introduce measures to effectively prevent abuse and ensure that excessively high debt rates, high equivalent annual rates, or high total credit costs cannot be imposed on consumers”. Interest charged on a “Buy now pay later” line of credit will be investigated, and “Revolving Credit” cards that lead to numerous complaints. Unlike normal credit cards these have a loan ceiling fixed by the bank with the client, but when a minimum amount is paid off the loan ceiling reverts to the agreed limit, it “revolves”. With further expensive purchases and only minimum payments made, interest (that is often higher than normal) is charged on previous interest amounts. A client can find themselves owing a large amount of money if they are not careful.
Last year, the Spanish Supreme Court looked at a case of a client who was in serious debt from their revolving credit card and established a criterion to determine whether the interest rates were fair or excessive. Their yardstick was based on the average monthly interest rates from the Bank of Spain for a specific year, and adding 6%. They ruled that if the rate is within this range, the loan is valid. If it exceeds it, it is unfair and invalid and considered to be too high and repressive.
The EU directive establishes that all companies that lend money will have to be registered
and have prior authorisation before they can operate. Banks and financial credit institutions already have regulations in place and have to lend money “responsibly”. They have to assess the status of the client with “due diligence” as to how much money they can afford to pay back, taking all their circumstances into account. The aim is that the customer does not default on the loan and the bank does not have a bad debt. This does not apply at all to “fast money” companies. Any company can set themselves up for this purpose, they are not supervised by the Bank of Spain if they are lending relatively low amounts of money, and how many of these companies are operating is completely unknown as there is no registration. One estimate is as many as 475.
In 2015 Spain introduced the “Second Chance Law”. This allows a court to decide if a person who is hopelessly in debt has taken measures to get themselves out of debt, but it hasn’t worked. One case was a businessman who in 2002 took out loans on a business that he subsequently had to close through ill health. To pay off the loans he obtained temporary work in the same sector, but the Covid-19 pandemic meant that he was without any income for over 14 months. He borrowed up to the limit on two credit cards, but he could not pay these off, nor his loans. The court granted him the “Benefit of Exoneration of Unsatisfied Liabilities” and cancelled his debts that had risen to 284,000 euros.
Not Rwanda, Albania
The abandoned UK scheme to send illegal immigrants to Rwanda cost 220 million pounds sterling with estimates of another 120 million when up and running. Unveiled as a “threat” to stop people getting on the boats, apart from a slight drop in numbers that could be put down to bad weather, it didn’t appear to have worked.
In 2023 some 385,445 irregular migrants arrived in EU territory, and 15 EU states, led by Denmark, have written to Ursula von der Leyen, the EU President, asking for an “innovative” scheme. This is different to the proposal where each member state has to take a quota of illegal immigrants and pay into a central fund if they won’t do this. The plan which the EU President is being asked to seriously consider is the ‘Albania Model’.
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has signed an agreement with Albania (considered a “safe” country outside the EU) with a reception centre and a holding centre for up to 3,000 people who have been rescued or picked up at sea before they get to Italy. On land that has been accepted as now belonging to Italy, procedures for identification, control and management of asylum applications and repatriation work where asylum is refused, will be carried out entirely by Italian staff. They will adopt the same entry requirements and Italian courts will be involved via televised hearings. Persons granted asylum, which is supposed to happen within 28 days, will be sent back to Italy. The estimated cost is 800 million euros over five years.
The military vessel ‘Libra’ brings boat people to Albania with accommodation for up to 200 people, healthcare facilities and of the 70 crew 30 of them are border control staff. An initial filter on the journey identifies adult males who have come from countries considered safe ones, and not therefore entitled to seek asylum. They will be held in the main centre until they are deported back to the countries they come
from. However, since October 4th there is a problem. A recent ruling by the EU Court of Justice has significantly reduced that list of countries considered safe from 22 down to seven. Amongst those excluded are all the main countries of origin of migrants arriving in Italy, such as Bangladesh, Egypt, Tunisia or Libya. Syria, the third country in numbers of arrivals to Italy, is already off the list.
In mid-October, the ‘Libra’ arrived with 16 male migrants to be processed as a trial run. Ten of them were from Bangladesh and six from Egypt. Immediately, it was ascertained that two were minors and two were “particularly vulnerable”. These four were taken back to Italy for processing there on the same ship. Critics pointed out that this had cost 18,000 euros per person and was a fiasco. The Italian government stated that this was entirely how the system should work, and with much larger numbers the cost would come down substantially. It is intended that other ‘authorised’ ships will pick up the migrants at sea and take them to Albania. If a boat with migrants arrives in Italy and they make land, they will be totally outside the Albanian scheme.
Ursua von der Leyen has been to Italy to see the reception centre and the main holding centre for herself, to see if this could be a working plan for other EU states. At the end of October Giorgia Meloni attended a summit meeting in Brussels to explain to representatives from various member states how her system was designed, set up and the cost calculations.

For Your Tomorrow We Gave Our Today
By Chrissie Cremore
This year’s two minute silence on Monday 11th November will be led by Chris Hart, former Master Aircrew in the RAF and will take place on the Mojácar Paseo Horseshoe opposite the Levante Restaurant at 11:00. After the event, drinks will be available from Shea’s Kitchen who is also arranging a special Remembrance Day luncheon in honour of the end of WW1. Shea is offering lunch for 15 euros of which 5 euros will be donated to The Royal British Legion. To book a reservation, please telephone Shea on 950 478 186 and order either Pork Loin with all the trimmings or Vegetable Risotto. Desserts are extra and Shea can also cater for those who have special dietary requirements.
To make the day even more memorable,The Indalo Players will be performing songs, poems, sketches, readings and facts to remind us all of not just WW1 but also how such a small word can and has inflicted great loss, pain, suffering and devastation over many, many decades, killing millions of people. The Royal British Legion now enters its 103rd year and was established to provide lifelong financial social and emotional support to members and veterans of the British armed forces and their families. If you wish to contact them, please check their Facebook page...Royal British Legion Mojácar Spain Branch Number 3485.
A Poignant Radio Play
By Chrissie Cremore
Do you remember a time before television when the only entertainment was the wireless? Indalo Players are proud to present their version of Over The River and Through the Woods a “radio play” written by Joe DePietro. This award winning reflective, touching and moving comedy has no background set, therefore allowing the audience to stretch their imagination! Set in the 80’s, this is a story of The Cristano and Gianelli Grandparents of Hoboken, New Jersey. The highlight of their week is the Sunday visit of their Grandson Nicholas for dinner...until he decides to accept a new job in some faraway land called...Seattle! Naturally, they hatch a plan to keep him from moving away... which may or may not work out!
Performance dates are Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th November at Hostal Rural in Turre. Doors open at 18:30 and “curtain up” is at 19:30. Tickets are 10 euros and available from Me & Mrs Jones in Mojácar, Total Entertainment in Turre and Forget-Me-Not in Las Buganvillas or you can email: tonysax1@gmail.com
Dinner can be booked separately. Please reserve your table with Sergio on 642 508 156. For more information about The Indalo Players, visit their website: www.indaloplayers.es

A Busy Week for Los Bandidos
Three Los Bandidos triathletes participated in the 1st Cabo de Gata Triatlon Olimpica in San José on Saturday, 19th October. The race started at 10:00, with the women going off 10 minutes later. The sea was perfectly calm for the 1500m two lap swim. The temperature was starting to rise for the very hilly 36k bike lap but luckily there was hardly any wind. By the time everyone was out on the 9.5k run, which went up through the town and out to Genevoses beach and back, it was very hot, making the hills very challenging. Support from fellow Bandidos and those enjoying the various cafes and bars in the town was fantastic and their encouragement kept everyone going. All competitors received a commemorative sweatshirt. See results below.
On Saturday evening, 13 Los Bandidos runners participated in the 16th race in the Circuito de Carreras Populares Diputación de Almeria 2024 in Pulpí. The 7km course wound through the town, up the very steep hill to the Castillo then back down, with the race finishing on the Paseo. Again, support from Los Bandidos friends and family was amazing. Competitors received a commemorative flask and Patricia Mulcahy won a raffle prize. Los Bandidos came away with eigth trophies and were 6th team overall (Gail, Steve, Nigel and Paul) in a total time 2:06:36. See results below.
On Sunday, 20th October, Mark, Kerry and Donna participated in the inaugural 5k Carrera Solidaria in Los Gallardos. No results available yet.
Earlier in the week, on Thursday, 17th October, Los Bandidos’ Ian Forrester represented Team GB in the World Triathlon Age Group Sprint Triathlon in Torremolinos and came 31st in the 70-74 category. Los Bandidos results (position, name, times and age group prizes)

Jokes of the Month
Living Longer
An elderly couple were killed in a car crash and found themselves being given a tour of heaven by Saint Peter. He told them, “Here is your oceanside large house, and over there are the tennis courts, swimming pools and two golf courses. If you get thirsty or hungry stop by any of the bars and restaurants that you fancy, everything is free”. “Heck, Gloria” the old man hissed to his wife when Saint Peter had gone, “We could have been here ten years ago if you hadn’t insisted that we eat stupid oat bran, wheat germ and low-fat diets!”
The Man of the House
A man had just finished reading a new book entitled “How to be the Man of the House”. He rushed down to the kitchen, found his wife and announced, “From now on, you need to know that I am the man of the house and my word is law. You will prepare me a gourmet meal tonight with a sumptuous dessert after I have finished my steak and two glasses of expensive wine. After dinner you will come upstairs with me and we will have the kind of sex that I like, before you run me a bath so I can relax. After half an hour you have to wash my back, towel me dry and bring me my dressing gown and slippers. Then, you will massage my feet while I enjoy a malt whisky. Then, tomorrow morning, guess who’s going to put all my clothes out, dress me and comb my hair?” His Italian wife replied, “My best guess would be the funeral director!”
The Debt
A man went to his lawyer and told him, ‘My neighbour owes me £500 and he won’t pay up. What should I do?’
‘Do you have any proof he owes you the money?’ asked the lawyer. ‘Nope,’ replied the man. ‘OK, then write him a letter asking him for the £1,000 he owed you,’ said the lawyer.
‘But it’s only £500,’ replied the man. ‘Precisely. That’s what he will reply and then you’ll have your proof!’
The Robber
An armed hooded robber bursts into a bank and forces the tellers to load a sack full of cash. On his way out the door with the loot one brave customer grabbed the man’s hood and pulls it off revealing the robber’s face. The robber shoots the guy without hesitation! He then looks around the bank to see if anyone else has seen him. One of the tellers is looking straight at him and the robber walks over and calmly shoots him as well. Everyone by now is very scared and looking down at the floor. “Did anyone else see my face?” screams the robber. There are a few moments of silence, then one elderly gent, looking down, tentatively raises his hand and says, “I think my wife may have caught a glimpse of you.”
The Blonde
A young ventriloquist is touring the clubs and one night he’s doing a show in a small club in a small town in Arkansas.
With his dummy on his knee, he’s going through his usual dumb blonde jokes when a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting:
“I’ve heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes. What makes you think you can stereotype women that way?
What does the color of a person’s hair have to do with her worth as a human being?
It’s guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community and from reaching our full potential as a person, because you and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against, not only blondes, but women in general...and all in the name of humor!”
The ventriloquist is embarrassed and begins to apologize, when the blonde yells, “You stay out of this, mister! I’m talking to that little idiot on your knee!”
A Bad Day
Saturday morning, I got up early, put on my long johns, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to hook the boat up to my truck to go fishing for the day and used the remote to open the garage door. As I drove out, I discovered there was a torrential downpour, snow mixed in with rain and a 50-mph wind. I reversed back into the garage and listened to the local weather forecast on the radio, that said it would be the same all day. I went back into the house, quietly undressed and slipped into bed. There, I cuddled up to my wife’s back with anticipation and whispered. “The weather out there is terrible.” She replied sleepily, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out there fishing?”
The Missing Man
Two men were employed in a town’s public works department. They went to the main park and one dug holes, and the other man followed behind him filling them in. After a while, one amazed onlooker said: “Why do you dig a hole, only to have your mate follow on behind and fill it up again?” The hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, “Well, I suppose it probably does looks odd, but we’re normally a three-man team. Today however, the lad who plants the trees called in sick.”
The Women
Three women are about to be executed for crimes. One’s a brunette, one’s a redhead, and one’s a blonde. Two guards brings the brunette forward, and the executioner asks if she has any last requests. She says no, and the executioner shouts, “Ready . . . Aim . . .”
Suddenly the brunette yells, “earthquake!!”
Everyone is startled and looks around. She manages to escape.
The angry guards then bring the redhead forward, and the executioner asks if she has any last requests. She says no, and the executioner shouts, “Ready . . . Aim . . .”
The redhead then screams, “tornado!!”
Yet again, everyone is startled and looks around.
She too escapes execution. By this point, the blonde has figured out what the others did. The guards bring her forward, and the executioner asks if she has any last requests. She also says no, and the executioner shouts, Ready . . . Aim....” The blonde shouts, “fire!!”
The Olympics
An Englishman, a Scotsman and an Irishman were without tickets for the opening ceremonies of the summer Olympics but hoped they would be able to talk their way in at the gate. Security was very tight however, and each of their attempts was met with a stern refusal. While wandering around outside the stadium the Englishman came upon a construction site, which gave him an idea. Grabbing a length of scaffolding, he presented himself at the gate and said, “Johnson, a pole vault competitor”, and he got in. The Scotsman, overhearing this, went there to search the site for himself. He found a sledge hammer and took it to the entrance and told the security guard, “McTavish, competing in the hammer event” and he got in as well. The Irishman combed the site for an hour and was nearly ready to give up when he spotted his way of getting in. Seizing a roll of barbed wire, he presented himself at the gate and announced, “O’Sullivan, fencing team.”
