August 18th.

A Hot Summer?

Weatherforecasters are predicting a hotter summer than normal with electricity prices going up for the 8.5 million people on the PVPC variable-hour tariff. We comment on the wide swing in the cost of electricity in an article, and advice is that people should change older airconditioning units for modern ones that are more efficient and cost less to run.

‘Infoca’, the organisation that fights forest fires in our province, is warning that there is an extreme risk of fires. Two recent fires affected 2,500 hectares (10 sq. miles). Without enough rain the vegetation is drier than normal. People are advised to be extremely careful as 62% of fires are caused by the general public when something that seems fairly harmless can quickly develop into a large fire. If people do spot a fire, they should immediately ring the 112 emergency number. At 3.40pm on June 6th the temperature at the official ‘Aemet’ weather station at Almería airport peaked at 37.9 degrees, the highest measured temperature in mainland Spain that day.

‘Galasa’, who supply our potable water, are in the news again because they are shutting four offices including the one in Arboleas. 80,000 people will now have to travel to Vera, including from Macael if they want to go to the Galasa offices. There are already frequent complaints that there are large queues. They are putting up their prices with a calculation that the average household bill will go up by 80 euros a year, but 60% of the water they buy from the desalination plant at Carboneras is lost in leaky pipework, which costs 3 million euros.

In our “In the News” section we comment on the continuing high numbers of organ donations in Spain which has been in the forefront for many years. In 2023, families agreed to the donation of 71 organs, 60 corneas and five osteoarticular tissues, coming from the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city in particular. The number of people who sign up for potential bone marrow donations is also very high.

A Spanish booking portal has stated that the most interest in holidays from national and international tourists is in Almería province and in particular Mojácar. Last year, one in five tourists coming to our province came to Mojácar with a total of 218,000 Spanish nationals and 73,000 nonSpanish. Unfortunately, daily major traffic jams occur with people trying to access the beach area, and the beach bypass will not open until next year.

As usual, in our “What’s On” section we list events that may be of interest to our readers. Sir Paul McCartney is coming to Madrid for two nights in December, but the “best” seats cost 950 euros! This time of year is when many activities move to the open air and the Garrucha and Vera open-air cinemas are now up and running. The ‘Dreambeach’ festival, moved to El Toyo near Almería city, takes place from Thursday, August 1st, until Sunday, August 4th. At the end of August, the annual ‘Feria’ takes place in Almería city at its special site, with concerts, activities on the promenade and bullfights.

Tuesday, July 16th, is the fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen, celebrated in many coastal areas. Decorated fishing boats in Garrucha, that will take members of the public, follow her statue being taken out to sea. August 15th is a national religious fiesta in Spain, and Friday, August 28th, is a local fiesta in Mojácar.

Editor’s note: As in other years there will not be a Focus magazine in August but we return in September.

In the

Love or Hate Bottle Tops

Most consumers have not been aware that this was going to happen. Plastic bottles holding up to 3 litres now have to have a cap that is still fixed to the bottle when it is undone, including milk cartons. The EU adopted this in 2018, to come into force this July, and Coco-Cola first started doing this as a means of keeping control of the tops to aid recycling. To avoid having to have two types of tops, manufacturers are using the new ones on bottles sold in the UK even though they are no longer in the EU. There have been many complaints about the caps hitting people in the eye, making pouring more difficult, and resulting in more spillage. There have been complaints that for older people it is more difficult to unscrew them and close them afterwards. Parents report that the top is a problem when young children are given a drink in a bottle. Some consumers are cutting the caps off and using the containers as normal although this does defeat the purpose, unless the caps are still put into plastic recycling bins and not in general waste bins. Also, coloured bottle tops are being replaced with white or clear ones as they are easier to recycle and reduce colour contamination.

Extreme Fire Risk

‘Infoca’ is the organisation in our province tasked with fire prevention measures during the winter and fire fighting particularly in the risk period, normally from June 1st to October 15th. They are warning that there is an extreme risk of fires and two major ones at Níjar and Enix so far this year affected 2,500 hectares (10 sq. miles) and were both difficult to extinguish. This is the worst total in the last ten years. From 2014 to 2024 it was only over 1,000 hectares on four occasions, and in 2023 the total was only 315 hectares. In the spring and summer months they have a total of 455 employees, 15 vehicles, three fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. Vegetation is very dry with no residual moisture from rain, unlike last year, and the Infoca danger warning is 30: 30: 30. This is temperatures over 30 degrees, 30% or less humidity and winds more than 30km/h. Infoca point out that 62% of fires are due to human negligence, 7% accidental (The Níjar fire was caused by lightning and the Enix

fire after overhead power cables broke) and 10% deliberate arson. People are urged to be extremely aware that fires can be caused by an activity that on the face of it does not seem at all dangerous.

Selling Water

A controversial plan to supply water to the Almanzora area for irrigation has been proposed. The Negratin reservoir supplies water to the Jabalcón canal that is 30km in length and is used for irrigation in Baza and nearby Benamaurel serving 3,600 hectares (13.9 sq. miles). At present, there is a surplus of 4 cubic hectometres (h3) that is not needed and will not be used, partly because of rainfall. (As a comparison, when the Cuevas desalination plant is up and running after the repairs it can supply 5m3). The proposal is that they sell this water to the Almanzora region for 1 million euros. This has been approved by the Association of Agriculturalists in the area with 960 votes in favour and only 30 against. The mayor of Benamaurel, Francisco Torregrosa, has said that water is not a resource with which to do business and states that in the case of ceding its use, it should take into account the neighbouring irrigation communities first. José Molina, president of the association, states that it is quite clear. The water is surplus to requirements and cannot be stored and they are perfectly within their rights, according to the statutes of the association, to sell surplus water. The 1 million euros will be used 50% towards the cost of the water from the Negratin reservoir that they buy, and 50% for improvements in irrigation in their area. The sale will have to be approved by the Confederation of Water Users that decides which of their pool of communities is given water, and what amount.

Organ Donation

Wednesday, June 5th, was Spanish Organ Donation Day and there were activities in hospitals and areas in Almería city, where there were a lot of people to provide information relating to organ donation. There was also an information point at the Huércal-Overa hospital. The numbers of donors from deceased persons in Spain have been the highest in the world for nearly 30 years, slightly

In the News

ahead of the US. Strictly speaking, organ donation is compulsory, but in practice, following a death in a hospital, transplant co-ordinators sympathetically approach relatives to ask if they will agree to organ or tissue donations. The percentage of families who agree is always very good. In 2023, at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city, 66 families were approached to ask if they would agree to organ donations and 26 families readily agreed, with another 17 agreeing to tissue and cornea transplants. This resulted in 71 organs, 60 corneas and 5 osteoarticular tissues being donated. The age of the donors was between 2 months and 84 years. In Almería province, up to the end of May this year, there were 21 organ donations with 17 coming from the Torrecárdenas hospital. Throughout Spain last year, a total of 2,346 donors supplied 5,861 transplants, and there were 433 live people who donated a kidney, and two people who donated part of their liver. This total worked out at 48.9 per million inhabitants compared to 25 per million in the UK where people have to opt out of automatically “consenting to donations” since May 2020. Spain has regularly supplied 20% of organ donations in the EU and 6% worldwide, despite being only 9% of the European population. Since records were kept in 1989, some 6,500 people in Spain have made live donations of a kidney or part of a liver. There are proposals in the Spanish Parliament that a living donor should not suffer economically whilst they are in hospital and lost wages can be claimed, the same as applies to a recipient who is receiving the donation and is on sick-leave.

EU Funding for Mojácar

When the PP party (roughly a conservative party) took control of the Junta de Andalucía they strongly criticised the previous PSOE (roughly a labour party) government for not applying for all the EU funding that was available. A Minister was appointed to travel to each of the provinces and explain what funding could be claimed. The Almería diputación (county council) has been asking municipalities to come up with an urban plan that will make use of the funding. Recently, the drawing up of this plan in Mojácar was unanimously approved at a council meeting. The document

includes everything from mobility, environmental and tourism infrastructure projects, social, employment and housing programmes that contribute to sustainable and intelligent and cohesive growth in line with European guidelines.

Saving Energy Costs

In an article we explain how the volatile energy market has meant reduced costs of electricity for people on the variable-hour PVPC tariff in particular. Analysts predict that this July and August prices will rise to about 50-70 euros per MW (1 million watts). IVA (VAT) on electricity has gone back to 21% but if the price stays above 45 euros for more than a short period of time, IVA will go back down to 10%. The expectation is that air-conditioning units will increase demand with less wind and rain, so reduced renewable energy. If a home or business has air-conditioning units that are between 8 and 10 years old, a new one will be far more efficient and use less electricity. Replacing one in a living room or a bedroom is a good idea. Samsung, the South Korean manufacturer, is introducing fridges and washing machines that use AI technology and machine learning. They claim that running one of their new AI fridges, that is quite expensive with older models, is much cheaper and the fridge senses where items are placed inside it and adjusts the temperature accordingly. Their new washing machines with four sensors can not only sense the weight of clothes but also the type and dirt level. Water use is adjusted and rinse time and spin time is reduced when appropriate. They claim up to 30% saving in electricity for both appliances. Other manufacturers are working on the same technology to introduce their own range of appliances.

Very Bad ITV (MOT) Figures

Any vehicle used on the roads in Spain, unless it is vehicle here during a holiday, needs periodic ITV (MOT) tests. For a new car this is from when they are fours years old and then every two years until age ten when it is every year. A roadworthy test on a foreign plated vehicle is available and if it passes it is given a “voluntary certificate”, not the same as a normal ITV test with a sticker for the windscreen. Some insurance policies may ask

In the News

for proof of a current ITV if there has been an accident claim. Partly because of the pandemic when there was a backlog, 60,600 owners of cars in Almería province have not had an ITV test at the appropriate period according to information from the ‘DGT’ (Spanish Traffic Authority). Out of the total, 29,743 are passenger cars, 10,402 are motorcycles and 20,470 belong to other categories, such as vans, trucks and mopeds. The ‘DGT’ point out that apart from the tests having to be done by law, older cars need tests to see if they are roadworthy, particularly when the average age of second-hand cars is just under 15 years. Not having a current test certificate carries a fine of 200 euros (reduced to 100 euros if paid within 21 days) but no loss of points. This is because vehicles owned by companies have no particular driver to fine. A much higher fine has been proposed as 100 euros is not considered any deterrent by many vehicle owners. A 500 euro fine (250 euros for prompt payment) has been proposed. A new proposal is that there should be a loss of two driver points irrespective of whether a failed vehicle is owned by a company as 95% are privately owned. If a vehicle fails a test and is not taken back for a re-test a further loss of two points should apply. The DGT has been suggesting for some time that their traffic cameras should be used to detect vehicles without the ITV sticker and an automatic fine sent to the registered owner, including businesses, the same as notifications of a speeding offence. Another proposal is that the automatic cameras that check whether a vehicle is allowed to enter a low emission zone should also be used to flag the lack of an ITV sticker. A further proposal is that when vehicle insurance is renewed a current ITV certificate has to be produced.

The Prize-Winning Rescue Dog

‘Aria’ was a five-year-old Labrador dog at the Almería city rescue centre that had gone there when the owners separated. A young girl, Naydí Beltrán Parejo, persuaded her parents to adopt him twelve months ago and he is her constant companion. Every day, she trained the dog to search for objects and she demonstrated this in the gardens in front of the Almería City town hall

where the performance was evaluated. She and her dog were awarded the Spanish Championship Award for Dog Search and Location, and they both received a medal. At the Municipal Zoo Centre there are currently 260 animals. Half are dogs and the other half cats, who are waiting for that second chance that Aria had a year ago, regardless of age. At a press conference Naydí pleaded with dog owners not to abandon their pets. Last August the city council approved the expenditure of 1.4 million euros to increase the staff and help to pay for the CER system (Capture Sterilisation and Release) for wild cats carried out by vets.

The Mojácar Parador

The headquarters of the Paradores group of hotels have announced a 28 million euros grant for Parador hotels in Andalucía including 1.4 million euros for Mojácar. It will be spent on improving energy efficiency with new air-conditioning and lighting and replacing some carpentry items. The hotel officially opened on January 17th, 1966, two days before the proposed date. This was because Manuel Fraga, Spanish Minister for Tourism at the time, came here with Angier Biddle Duke, the American Ambassador to Spain. This was immediately after the Palomares disaster and the two men waded into the sea at Palomares so Manuel Fraga could demonstrate that there was no danger from plutonium radiation! He also persuaded several American reporters at the scene to join him. Some of the photos may have been taken in the sea opposite the Mojácar Parador

In the News

but Manuel Fraga was immediately labelled “a prize idiot”. He never overcame this title for the rest of his life and the photos are still widely available on the internet. One of the four unarmed missiles had landed in the sea and after a huge search it was retrieved with the help of a fisherman from Águilas who had seen where it came down. When it was recovered, the nose cone containing plutonium dust was intact, fortunately, unlike two of them that hit the ground and split open.

More Operations and Consultations

The Andalucía Health Service have stated that 185,000 people have had operations this year up to the end of May which is 10% more than the same period in 2023. This includes 45,000 that had gone over the official waiting time. The current waiting time has gone down to 141days from 150. Also, the number of outpatients that should have had appointments within 60 days had gone down on June 10th to 443,000 throughout the community compared to 486,000 last December. All the operations have been carried out in the normal hospitals, but from the start of July some urgent ones will be carried out at private hospitals. The two in Almería city have agreed a standard charge, so each hospital will charge the Andalucía Health Department the same amount of money, and decide which hospital takes which patients. The Union of Health Workers are complaining that insufficient staff to cover for those on holiday during the summer have been given contracts.

The 400-Year-Old Ship in Cádiz

By chance, 12 years ago, a wreck was found in the sea very close to Cádiz harbour. It was christened ‘Delta I’ and contains Swedish canons and silver ingots. How it came to be there 400 years ago, where it had come from, or where the destination was is a complete mystery, along with the name of the ship. Because the container port is being extended the ship is being lifted up to enable it to be studied in detail by the Andalucía Centre for Underwater Archaeology. Previous work at the wreck includes the recovery of 27 iron cannons, 22 ingots of silver manufactured in Bolivia dated 1651, and a bell inscribed “Jesús, María y José”

that is a typical inscription but not considered to be the name of the ship. Eventually it will be returned to the sea in a different location. The 2.6 million euros cost of lifting the ship and the study is being paid for by the port authority.

July Vehicle Safety Aids

Pere Navarro, the head of the ‘DGT’ traffic authority, has pointed out that from July, new cars have to have various safety features. These include a drowsiness detector, an intelligent speed assist, a cross-traffic alert, a black box that stores data in relation to possible accidents, a lane departure warning, an emergency braking system, the use of seat belts in all occupied seats, and a breathalyzer ignition inhibitor. At present the breathalyzer device is not required but there has to be the means of connecting one when it is required by law.

1.13 Billion Euros Aid for Ukraine

After cancelling a previous visit to Spain because of the Russian offensive, President Zelinski came here at the end of May. Very unusually, King Felipe VI went to the Madrid airport when he arrived and took him to the palace. He had a long meeting with Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister, lunch at the royal palace and appeared in the Spanish parliament. All this was in celebration and thanks for a 1.13 billion euros military aid package, and this amount of money is unprecedented. Pedro Sánchez stressed that the military equipment was not being taken from arms intended for the Spanish military but it would be specifically manufactured, or in the case of 10 redundant Leopard battle tanks, these were in storage and would be refurbished. Last year another 10 were sent to Ukraine. The aid package includes Patriot missiles, a large consignment of 155-millimetre artillery shells, anti-drone systems, tactical vehicles, optronic surveillance and reconnaissance equipment, remote-controlled weapon towers and portable rocket launchers. In addition, Spain will extend the combat training programme for Ukrainian military personnel to another 400 recruits, of which 4,000 have already been trained under the direction of the Toledo Training Coordination Centre of the Spanish Military. At the military hospital in Zaragoza some

In the News

badly injured Ukrainian soldiers are being treated. It is intended that some of the money will come from EU funds and will be part of a bridge package until Ukraine eventually joins NATO and the EU.

Tobacco Smuggler Caught

Following a painstaking investigation a car was stopped by police and customs officials on the A-7 motorway near Adra. Crammed inside were 19 boxes containing 95,000 packets of cigarettes from different manufacturers with a retail value of 52,000 euros. The driver had a warehouse in Córdoba and distributed cigarettes in Seville, Málaga, Granada and Almería provinces. His car had a curtain between the driver and the rest of his car that had heavily tinted windows. Having more than 15,000 illegal packets of tobacco merits a prison term of one to five years and a fine from 1,000 euros up to 350% of the duty that has been avoided. The man had previous convictions for the same offence. The average profit from smuggling cigarettes is between 1 & 2 euros per packet that has been bought for 3 to 4 euros, compared to the officially licensed ‘estancos’ who pay 6 to 7 euros. The total loss to tobacconists in Spain through smuggling is put at 30 million euros.

Good Employment Figures

The period between Easter and the start of the summer tourist season is one when there is often a lull in employment. Figures for May this year show the complete opposite. An extra 220,300 people started paying Social Security that took the total number of employed persons up to 21.32 million, which is a record. Also, for the first time ever, 10 million of these are women. The percentage of non-Spanish workers paying in is now 13.5% and the total number of self-employed persons is 3.38 million. 58,600 people came off the unemployment register taking the total down to a 2.6 million, the lowest since 2008. This is still a high number, but it is improving. Figures for June normally show an increase in employment so this will probably be another good month.

ITV Tests in ZBE Zones

ZBE (Low emission zones) are in place in many

parts of Spain and vehicles that do not have the corresponding emissions sticker can be fined if they go into these areas. The DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) have issued guidelines relating to ITV (MOT) stations within ZBE zones. They consider that vehicles without an appropriate sticker should be allowed to go to the ITV stations for the test and return if necessary for a second test. The head of the DGT is therefore advising city and town halls that they should make this exception, without any fines being levied. In many cases automatic cameras detect vehicles without the necessary sticker and a fine is generated and posted to the address of the owner. People going to an ITV station with an appointment should be able to avoid the fine.

The Agriculture Balance Sheet

Agriculture is the main motor of the economy in our province and the high season runs from September to the end of April. In this 2023-2024 period up to the end of March, growers sold 1.79 billion tonnes, up 3%, and 75% of the exports from Andalucía come from our province. Output rose in January with the good weather when tomato production went up 11%. The highest sales are peppers with an increase of 3% and aubergines went up by 16% with 101,000 tonnes. The high temperatures have led to an increase in pests but biological control can deal with this. Some large companies supply insects that will prey on the unwanted ones. Total income was 3.97 billion euros, 2.9% down on the 2022-2023 period, with aubergines selling for 10% less. Despite this, sales are above the average over the last five years. Good figures for watermelons and melons are predicted as the weather for these is good. In June, watermelons were selling for 66 céntimos per kilo and melons at 95 céntimos per kilo but these prices will drop as production increases.

Far Less Marriages

A new survey has shown that 50% of couples in a relationship in Spain aren’t married, and when couples do, they are much older. In 1976, out of every 1,000 head of population 7.2% were married, down to 3.7% in 2023. Although there were 273,000 marriages in 2022, this is not a representative year as people were not able to

In the News

get married during the pandemic, and there were 87,000 in 2020. In Almería province in 1975 there were 2,800 marriages, and the number did not go below 2,500 until 2009, the start of the financial crises. Since then, the numbers are above or below 2,000 every year. The average age of a man who gets married in Spain has gone from 26.7 in 1976 to 36.8 last year, and for women up from 21.4 to 39.1. Money worries, insecure employment and the high cost of a traditional wedding are considered to be the main factors. In 1996, church marriages were 77% of all marriages and that has fallen to 19%.

Albox Landfill to Close

The landfill site at Albox has resulted in many complaints for a number of years. The appropriate department of the Junta de Andalucía has announced that it will close shortly and the area will be sealed in four layers at a tender price of 3.9 million euros “in order to avoid environmental damage and reduce health risks”. Subsequently, regeneration with native plants and trees will take place and suitable drainage ensured. A Surveillance and Control body will be appointed for a period of 30 years. The site will be fenced to stop livestock entering.

Mojacár Tourist Explosion

Beatriz Oficialdegui is the Marketing Director of the travel portal Destinia that charts numbers of tourists intending to come to Spain in the summer period. Their latest figures are that Almería province is the leader in the number of tourist bookings, and Mojácar is the most popular destination. Total numbers nationwide are put at 54% more than last year. 77% of these people are Spanish Nationals and 23% foreign tourists. Mojácar has 10,000 hotel beds (744 per 1,000 inhabitants), 7,500 places in other types of accommodation including hostals, 6,338 beds in registered tourist accommodation, and an indeterminate number of second homes. Last year, one in five tourists coming to our province came to Mojácar with a listed total of 218,000 Spanish nationals and 73,000 non-Spanish. More tourists are good news for businesses but in the case of Mojácar there are frequent grid-locks of traffic that affects both residents and tourists. The beach road bypass will not help until next summer. Predictions

for all of Spain are that tourist numbers will well exceed the previous highest number of 85 million.

A Triumph for Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz, the 21-year-old tennis player from Murcia, defeated his German rival in the final of the Paris Roland Garros championship. It went to five sets, with some heart-stopping moments, but he kept his nerve. A crucial line call in thee third set went against Alexander Zverev who was adamant that Carlos’ ball was out. The umpire came down and pointed out where the ball had landed that Zverev disputed. There was no “hawkeye” overhead camera image available but looking at a recording of the televised coverage afterwards, it was determined that the shot was out by 2mm! Carlos is considered to be a young Rafa Nadal, and he made history by being the youngest player to have won major championships on all of the three types of courts, hard (The US open), grass (Wimbledon) and clay (Rolan Garros). Rafa Nadal did this, but he was a year older. Meanwhile, Rafa Nadal has announced that he will not compete at Wimbledon and will concentrate of being able to take part in the Paris Olympics. It has been revealed that Carlos and Rafa will play in the doubles matches at the Olympics, although they have never played together in a competition. It is widely expected that Rafa will retire from tennis afterwards.

Tyre Problems

The Spanish ‘El Motor’ publication has commented on tyre wear that takes place much sooner with tyres on all electric vehicles. In a survey, a very large number of motorists complained that excessive tyre wear had not been revealed when they purchased an electric car. Tests on tyres show that they wear out 25% sooner than tyres on petrol and diesel cars. This was after 29,000km and 551days of average driving. Hybrid car tyres lasted 39,700km with 585 days of use, whereas petrol and diesel cars lasted for 39,100km over 670 days. One motorist complained to ‘El Motor’ that rear tyres on his electric car, with quite a high mileage, only lasted 8,500km. When he bought new ones, he was told that this was a feature of electric cars and in his case, the heavy battery was right at the rear of his car. ‘El Motor’ considers that tyre manufacturers and electric car manufacturers must work together to develop better tyres. They have pointed out that a product called ‘Slime’ is invaluable when there is a puncture, and a very good solution instead of a motorist changing a punctured tyre that for some drivers can be difficult, impossible or dangerous, or waiting for a breakdown vehicle to arrive. The ‘slime 50129’ repair kit costs slightly less than 50 euros from amazon and has sealant and an air compressor that plugs into a cigarette lighter. The sealant used is sufficient to fix the puncture with no waste and the pressure needed (found on the door panel of most cars) can be monitored by a pressure test gauge supplied with the kit. The total time needed to fix the puncture will typically be 10 minutes. It is recommended that having used this kit a driver should take the tyre to a tyre supplier for inspection within three days or 100km.

Going to France by Bus

From June 27th the FlixBus company has a coach from Almería to Paris at fares from 43,99 euros with a journey time of 26 hours. There is a slight problem that the company say is a quirk of Spanish regulations, and at stops at coach stations in Spain passengers cannot disembark as their tickets are inter-countries and cannot be used between Spanish cities. In France, the coach stops at Biarritz, Burdeos and Tours for passengers that

do not want to go to Paris. Passengers have free Wi-Fi, charging points for phones, laptops and iPads, extended legroom and good toilet facilities.

Popular Live Concerts

We have previously pointed out that live concerts are very popular in Spain this year, partly put down to people not being able to go to them during the pandemic. High ticket prices are not reducing the numbers. On May 29th and 30th Taylor Swift performed in Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu football stadium to a total of 130,000 fans and on May 29th AC/DC put on the first of their two concerts in Spain at Seville as part of their “Power Up” tour followed by a second concert on June 1st. A total of 120,000 fans turned up. AC/DC have not been on tour since 2016 and many fans think this tour will be the last one. Bruce Springsteen “The Boss” performed the first of three concerts in Madrid on June 12th, with two more in Barcelona. The organisers claimed that the three Madrid concerts with a capacity of 42,000 each night were sold out, but a video of the first concert showed unoccupied seats. His “E Street band” is now an “E Street Orchestra” with 18 musicians. It is eight years since he last came to Spain.

Insurance for Electric Scooters

The Spanish government, after recommendation from the ‘DGT’ (Spanish Traffic Authority), have decreed that owners of electric scooters (and bicycles) have to have minimum insurance against accidents. When the law has been passed in parliament there is a period of six months from this date when insurance has to be obtained. At the moment, insurance is recommended but is not compulsory. If a minor riding an electric scooter has an accident that damages property or results in injury or death to a third party, the parents or guardians are responsible for any monetary claims which can be substantial. As with any vehicle insurance there is a range of options with different types of cover. Some town halls require that the owners of electric scooters have to register them, and this will be compulsory from January 2nd, 2026. Wearing helmets would seem to be a prime requirement to minimise injury but it is up to individual town

In the News

halls. Mojácar is one of the municipalities where, unfortunately, it is not mandatory.

Almería City Hottest in Spain

On Thursday, June 6th, as predicted, temperatures in Almería city and parts of the province were very high. ‘Aemet’ is the state meteorological body and they record temperatures, rainfall and wind speeds. They issue yellow, orange and red warnings for excessive wind, high seas and high temperatures. ‘Ametse’ is a collection of meteorological stations in Southern Spain and they publish their own statistics. ‘Aemet’ do not say they are wrong, but they only accept official readings from their own weather stations. In more than a dozen municipalities in our province, recorded temperatures were above 35 degrees and Ametse recorded 39.2 degrees in Peciña and 39.1 degrees at Rioja. Aemet issued a yellow warning for the Poniente area and Almería city on June 6th from midday to 9pm. In Almería city at 11am information panels stated it was 33 degrees but at 1pm at Almería airport it was 36 degrees. At 3.40pm they recorded 37.9, the highest of any Aemet weather station in Spain. The previous maximum in the afternoon so far this year was 32.1 on April 6th at the airport. The highest June temperature was on June 29th, 2015, when it was measured at 40.8 degrees. June 6th also had a yellow warning for wind speed with 49.4km/h at the airport (the third highest in Spain) and 72km/h in Carboneras (the second highest). During the early hours of June 6th several fires took place in the Níjar region started by lightning during the electrical storm, and firemen from Turre went to help. 200 operatives and 12 assorted aircraft were used to contain and extinguish the fire but this took several days.

Inflation and VAT on Food

At the end of May core inflation in Spain was up slightly to 3.6%, ignoring food and non-alcoholic drinks. The rise was put down to IVA (VAT) on electricity going back to 21% and higher costs from tourism by Spanish nationals. Post pandemic tourist expenditure has gone up by 17.7% compared to last year, and hotel and accommodation charges are up 9.4%. Cruise ship prices have also gone up by 22%.

Inflation from food products has come down to 4.4% with a drop in the high price of olive oil, put down to a better yield after recent rain. Milk, flour, pasta and butter has gone down in price as well as prices of fruit and meat. Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, has put forward a proposal that the reduction from 10% to 5% or 4% on many items, put in place in January 2023, should continue. It is reviewed every six months. This will cost a further 800 million euros in lost IVA for the ‘Hacienda’ (tax department). The initial calculation for 2024 was a loss in revenue of 2.5 billion euros, but this will now go up to 3.3 billion. Some market analysts think that the extension of the reduced IVA is not justified and prices will come down on their own in the second quarter of this year with better harvests. Also, Spain has promised the EU that it will tackle fiscal imbalance to reduce the deficit to below 3% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product). The increase in IVA for electricity from 5% and then 10% back up to the norm of 21% has also been criticised. It is very likely that it will go back to 10% for extended periods of time this summer as a wholesale MW price of over 45 euros triggers this reduction. Analysts think there should be a progressive reduction from 21% down to 10% on a sliding scale.

Reduced Interest, Better Predictions

As expected, on June 6th, the Central European Bank reduced the 4.5% interest rate down to 4.25%, the first drop since 2016 with 10 consecutive hikes from July 2022 to September 2023. It is anticipated that it will drop again in the September and December reviews, but Christine Lagarde, the CEB President, has warned that inflation is coming down but not as quickly as was hoped. She stated that any predictions as to further cuts were too optimistic at present. The ‘Euribor’ inter-bank lending percentage is used by banks to set their mortgage rate after adding on their own percentage. It now stands at 3.69% so this will reduce the cost of mortgages. In Almería province last December only 544 mortgages were registered, the worst month in 2023. This January the total was 721 and with the reduced rate numbers should increase. Christine Lagarde picked out Spain as being good at reducing inflation and

In the News

agreed with a target of 2% in 2025 which is the EU benchmark. The International Monetary Fund has raised the growth rate for Spain in 2024 from 1.9% to 2.4% and at the end of June Spain raised their forecast to 2.5%. The 2025 prediction of 2.1% will hopefully improve nearer the time. There was a warning that the proposal to reduce the working week to 38.5 hours and then 37.5 had to be very carefully considered to avoid a slowdown in growth that might affect overall employment as well.

Chinese Import Taxes

After a study over several months, the EU is proposing raising the import tax on Chinese electric cars as it is considered that their low prices are having a negative effect on European manufactured cars. The initial proposal is an additional tax of between 25% to 38% and this would also apply to imported batteries. There is already an EU import tax of 10%. It is proposed that member states agree on the amount of duty by November that would be in place for five years. The downside is that there would be a “tit for tat” tax in China on goods coming from the EU, so this has to be taken into account. China immediately announced that they were reviewing import taxes on pork coming into China, and the total amount imported in 2023 from the EU was 5.6 billion euros. Spain supplies the largest amount which is 1.4 billion euros more than three times the amount from Holland and Denmark. The proposed duty would apply to fresh, chilled or frozen meat and edible pork offal; pork fat in its different forms – fresh, refrigerated, frozen, dried, smoked, salted or pickled – as well as intestines, bladders and stomachs. Another proposal is an import tax on brandy that would hit France as 99.8% of imports come from France.

Major Police Raids

In a large police investigation in Spain a judge oversees it and issues arrest and search warrants. The Guardia Civil police have various different specialist divisions and 200 police, with ones brought in from Seville, mounted a concerted operation, code-named ‘Operation Indalo’ in June. They had been granted search and arrest warrants for 35 premises at Adra and Berja in western

Almería province and initially arrested 24 persons. Those arrested were charged with belonging to a criminal organisation, taking part in drug and people smuggling, running the logistics for criminal activities, money laundering, and offences against the rights of foreign nationals. Some of them were charged with the illegal obtaining, storage and transport of large amounts of fuel for drug and people-smuggling launches. Documentation seized during the raids resulted in bank accounts being frozen, and cash and luxury vehicle were seized. The Central Government delegate in Andalucía, Pedro Fernández, announced that the raids were part of the major plan in Andalucía to break up criminal gangs operating in the Campo de Gibraltar area. A Guardia Civil police spokesperson stated that the investigation was on-going with more arrests and seizures of items anticipated.

Almería UD

The Almería UD football club played their last home game against Cádiz on May 25th. They went out from the first division, relegated down to the second division with a bang and won 6-1. It has been announced that the Catalan coach, Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, popularly known as ‘Rubi’, will become their manager for the next three seasons. He was their coach from 20212023 and has pledged that he will work very hard to get them back in the first division. How this will affect Turki Al-Sheikh and his patronage after he bought the club in 2019 is not known, and there are still fears that he will pull out. He didn’t appear at either of the last three home games and has previously tweeted “patience has its limits”.

So Now You Know...

Arthur Ashe

Tennis player Arthur Ashe was born in Richmond, Virginia, on July 10th, 1943. He won a total of 33 titles including the U.S. men’s singles championship and U.S. Open in 1968 and the men’s singles at Wimbledon in 1975. As a pioneering African American athlete, he fought against racism and stereotyping and was arrested numerous times while protesting. In 1992, he announced he had likely contracted HIV through a transfusion during heart surgery. He formed the Arthur Ashe Foundation for the Defeat of AIDS and campaigned for public awareness regarding the disease. He died from pneumonia in New York, on February 6, 1993.

Joshua Reynolds

British portrait painter Joshua Reynolds was born on July 16th, 1723, in Plympton, Devon. He became the leading portrait artist of the 18th century, raising the status of portraits to those of religious and historical works. He created fashionable, large-scale images of British high society as well as early celebrities including actors and courtesans. His images often included theatrical elements including colourful props and costumes, imagined pastoral landscapes, and classical symbolism. He played a central role in founding the Royal Academy of Arts, which gave artists an opportunity to display their work publicly for the first time.

Apollo 11

On July 20th, 1969, a global audience watched television when the Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong took his first step onto the moon. As he stepped down onto the moon’s surface from the lunar module he proclaimed, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. He inadvertently omitting an “a” before “man” which he intended to say, so slightly changing the meaning. He was joined by Buzz Aldrin and they spent about two and a quarter hours exploring the site they had named “Tranquillity Base” and collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth on the ‘Columbia’ mother ship.

The Atomic Bomb “Fat Boy”

On July 16th, 1945, the experimental atomic bomb “Fat Boy” was set off at 5.30am in the New Mexico desert, creating a mushroom cloud that rose to 41,000 ft. It emitted heat three times the temperature of the interior of the sun and wiped out all plant and animal life within a radius of one mile. The “Manhattan Project” was led by physicist Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie R. Groves, and had the assistance of several of the best scientists in the field at the time. “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” were the names of the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki with an approximate death toll of 280,000.

July Birth Symbols

The fourth astrological zodiac sign, Cancer, originating from the constellation Cancer, ends on July 21st when Leo is the zodiac sign for the rest of the month. The associated Cancer animal is the crab depicted as a creature with a hard shell and soft underbelly. This reflects the duality of Cancer’s personality; they are tough and protective on the outside but nurturing and emotional on the inside. The associated precious stone is a bright red ruby and the Cancer colour is silver. Before July 7th the Oak tree is the tree sign and after July 7th the Holly tree. The people who are considered the most compatible are those from Taurus and Pisces.

Henry Ford

Henry Ford the automotive pioneer was born on a farm in Dearborn Township, Michigan on July 30th 1863. He reputably built a steam engine when he was fifteen and a petrol engine age thirty. In 1903 he established the Ford Motor Company with an assembly-line production system that revolutionised car manufacture and he introduced a 5 dollars-a-day wage for five working days a week. His “Model T” car came out in 1908. The Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers stopped his company’s production because Henry was not a licensed manufacturer. He went to court in 1909 and lost, but won on appeal in 1911.

Who Pays For Free or Negative Priced Electricity?

The short answer is, the suppliers. Recently, for the 8.5 million people who pay for their electricity on the variable hourly PVPC tariff, there have been times when electricity has been free, or in theory, we should have received a refund.

Red Eléctrica de España (REE) is the Spanish National Grid organisation. In winter months the supply has to be stepped up to meet the demand. In Spring and Summer, with a major contribution from renewable energy sources, photovoltaic solar panels, wind farms and hydro-electric plants, the available supply has quite often satisfied the demand. The demand is reduced on holidays, weekends, days when air-conditioning is not needed, and with more people having their own photo-voltaic panels. A key date was Tuesday, May 19th, 2023, a normal weekday, when renewable energy supplied 100% of the demand in mainland Spain for nine hours. Electricity from nuclear power stations and co-generation power station was still needed, as Spain supplies electricity to the Balearic Islands and exports it to Portugal, France and Andorra. Co-generation power stations burn gas to drive gas turbines, and the steam generated drives steam turbines. Their electricity is expensive and it takes two hours to shut one down or start it up again.

The ’OMIE’ organisation is the Spanish Market Operator for electricity and they gauge the likely demand for electricity for each of the 24 hours of the next day. Suppliers of electricity put in wholesale bids to sell their electricity for each hour based on the very volatile Euro price per MW (a MW is one million watts). It was 39 euros on October 7th 2020, 288 euros on October 7th 2021, and a maximum of 13 euros last May. If the supply exceeds the demand for some hours of the day electricity may be free. Also, in the past few months there have been some hours when nuclear and co-generation plants kept producing electricity rather than shutting down the supply, so they sold it at a loss. This happened for the first time on April 1st at 3pm-4pm when the best bid price was minus 1.5 euros, the worst price ever.

Since then, there have been 300 hours with zero profit and 180 hours when they sold it at a loss.

We have commented previously that two very large solar farms will be built at Tabernas in addition to the ones already there. A new feature is batteries that charge up during the day and supply electricity at night when the panels don’t. A typical installation has rows of them, each one larger than a shipping container. For a long time, when hydro-electric dams are in use, the water can be pumped back up overnight to be reused the next day.

The demand for electricity in Spain is decreasing, and at present has gone down by 0.8% compared to 2023 which was the lowest since 2005. Industry is using less, and a prime example is Cosentino who have installed the largest industrial photovoltaic array in Spain. The output is up to 20MW that should amount to 34,000MW over one year and provide 25% of the electricity they need. The Michelin company have installed an initial 25,000m2 array of panels, and there are 8,300 private or public “home” photovoltaic installations in Almería province providing 89MW. Market analysts think that this July and August, with less wind and rain and air-conditioning in use, prices will go back up. This will please the supply companies but we will have to pay more.

Some Leading Features of Almería Province

Alist of 10 features where Almería province leads the way has been published.

The first one is cutting-edge agriculture in 31,000 hectares (120 sq. miles) of greenhouses producing three million tonnes per year, 50% of the total output of Spain. The growing techniques are a model of agricultural efficiency and productivity.

The Almería Solar Platform at Tabernas is one of the most important research centres for solar energy worldwide with continuing testing and development of new technology, fundamental to European projects to improve solar energy production.

Filming in the Tabernas area continues to take place with over 300 films and commercials so far, and regular visits from international film makers. Important events are the Almería Western Film Festival and the Almería International Film Festival.

The Cabo de Gata-Níjar National Park is an outstanding example of sustainable tourism, one of the most protected areas of Spain, spread over 38,000 hectares (147 sq. miles) of land and 12,000 hectares in the sea. The Ecotourism and outdoor activities attract 1 million visitors each year.

Almería province has pioneers in the production of water from desalination plants. Total capacity of potable water is 135,000m3/day, sufficient for 3 million inhabitants. The Carboneras plant is one of the largest in Europe providing 120,000 m3 / day of potable and agricultural water.

Almería University and other research centres are leaders in biotechnology, agri-food and environmental science, with 700 researchers who collaborate with important centres worldwide with a major impact on crop improvement and higher yield techniques.

Apart from Cabo de Gata, Almería province has other areas of environmental protection such as the Karst in Yesos gypsum mines at Sorbas spread over 2,200 hectares (8 sq. miles). The mines are very good examples of sustainable management and biodiversity that attract scientists and tourists interested in nature.

Almería province is a specially privileged location with the highest amount of sunshine in Spain with more than 3,000 hours. This is because of the southeast-facing coast with mountains behind that act as a barrier against cloud and rain. Warm and dry air provide our popular summer climate.

The Calar Alto observatory at an altitude of 2,168m in the Sierra de Los Filabres is the largest astronomical observatory in Continental Europe. It is equipped with state-of-the-art telescopes, including the largest one that is 3.5m. Many important discoveries have been made and it is vital in collaboration with investigations linked to other international astronomy centres.

Whether it is a good thing or not, Almería province has the most arid land in Europe. There is a drastic change from 307 km2 at the start of the 20th century and the area is now 3,330 km2. It occupies one third of all the land in the province.

Preparing for a Tsunami

Seismologists use a variety of data to prepare predictions as to when an earthquake may occur. Predicting one with certainty is almost impossible, but charting where there are likely to be ones in the future is more accurate. A tsunami is a wave or waves caused by earthquakes or volcanos under the sea, and as they approach the coast they increase in height to as much as 30m. In 2004 a tsunami in the Indian Ocean at Sumatra killed 300,000 people.

The Alboran sea is off the coast of Murcia, Almería, Granada, Málaga, Algeciras, Ceuta and Morocco. It is a constant “hot spot” for undersea earthquakes caused by two tectonic plates grinding together until one of them gives. A tsunami in the centre of the Alboran sea would reach Morocco in about 15 minutes, 30 minutes to the Granada and Málaga coast, and 30-40 minutes to the Almería coast. The Junta de Andalucía has published a draft proposal for an Emergency Plan and along our coastline it applies to Adra, Balanegra, Carboneras, Cuevas del Almanzora, El Ejido, Enix, Garrucha, Mojácar, Níjar, Pulpí, Roquetas de Mar and Vera. All these municipalities have to have an emergency plan in place, and within the next few months several types of internationally accepted signs have to be put up.

One sign has a yellow triangle showing a wave with the warning “Zona de Peligro, TSUNAMI, Tsunami Hazard Zone” in all areas where a tsunami might reach. The other signs are green with left or right arrows showing a person escaping from the wave with the words “Ruta de Evacuación, TSUNAMI, Evacuation Route”. These are the designated routes that people should use to leave the danger areas for a higher area or a high building that is out of danger. Another green sign shows a person on higher land above the wave with the words “Zona Segura, TSUNAMI, Safety Zone” where people should stay. After a safety assessment, blocks of apartment can be used as another safety zone with the words “Evacuación Vertical, TSUNAMI, Vertical Evacuation”. All this sounds very frightening but the signs are considered necessary. Town halls have their own map of the coast showing areas with businesses and property that the tsunami might

reach so people are forewarned. There are many other plans that will be put in place to evacuate people who need help, and first aid and civil defence measures to deal with a displaced population.

On September 22nd, 1522, an earthquake devastated Almería city with an intensity of 8 to 9 on a scale of 10 that was used at the time. The likely cause was a tsunami in the Alboran sea that caused 1,000 deaths. Excavations inland at Cabo de Gata show sediment considered to have come from 1522. In 1790 an earthquake and tsunami that started off Algeria reached Almería and Cartagena on a 9 to 10 level with a wave stated to be 2 to 3m high and 3,000 people died. On January 13th, 1804, there was an earthquake off Motril in the Alboran sea with more than 1,400 deaths in Berja, Canjáyar, Roquetas de Mar and Dalías, leaving Almeria city in ruins again.

The worst and largest tsunami in Spanish history took place on November 1st, 1755. It was southwest of the Iberian Peninsular affecting the coasts of Portugal and Morocco as well as Spain. The 8.5 magnitude caused a 10m tsunami in the Gulf of Cádiz and 1,000 Spanish people died.

More Shelter...at the Shelter!

PAWS-PATAS animal shelter could not exist without the help of local volunteers and definitely oversea volunteers. There is a constant flow of people from all over Europe who offer to come and help for at least 3 weeks or sometimes 3 months. The problem is supplying enough on-site accommodation.

I put a plea out on the local forums and thankfully The Universe was switched on to our needs that day. A local couple knew of a Danish woman who had returned to her home country due to ill health and she wanted to dispose of her caravan. However, there is always a “but” and in this case, the caravan was actually registered in the name of the lady’s late husband and he hadn’t left a will. With the help and determination of Chris Stokes and Sue Freakes they continually liaised with the woman’s lawyers in order to find a solution.

When the day finally arrived for the caravan to be moved out of LG camp site, another local person Allison Kissane offered to pay for a grua to move the caravan to the animal shelter...just in time for 2 new oversea volunteers. Allison said “I don’t help at the shelter and I wanted to give something”.

PAWS-PATAS are forever grateful for all the local people who kindly donate to the outlets and raise money by making chutney, jewellery, organising

quiz and musical events...and much, much more! The animal shelter needs help in many different areas. It’s not just cleaning and feeding the cats and dogs, there are so many other lighter tasks like, driving the volunteers to the supermarket, assisting with laundry, helping in the outlets or just socialising with the animals. Los Bandidos take on the Almeria Triathlon

Six Los Bandidos took on the XVII Almeria Sprint Triathlon at Playa del Zapillo in Almeria, two for their first ever triathlon and one for his first ever sea swim.

The race consisted of a 750m sea swim, a 3-lap 20k cycle and a 2-lap 5k run. The men entered the sea first and the ladies 10 minutes later. Sea conditions were near perfect, but there was some swell after the first buoy and an undertow at the exit point on to the beach. The wind was a bit gusty on the bike leg, with one unfortunate triathlete getting blown off her bike on a roundabout, but was still fast and flat. It was hot for the run along the Paseo but the encouragement of fellow Bandido supporters kept everyone going to the finish line.

The first man crossed the finish line in 59:09 and the first lady in 1:10:25. 127 men finished the race and 29 ladies. All finishers received a commemorative bag, drinks bottle, water and a banana!

Left to Right: Chrissie Cremore, Chris Stokes, Sue Freakes, Vanessa Maipauw (Shelter Manager), oversea volunteers and Allison Kissane

Los Bandidos was set up in June 2018 with a small group running the 5k Mojácar Paseo, and now has road cycling, sea swimming and triathlon groups. All ages, nationalities and speeds are welcome, whether permanent residents or holiday makers. Los Bandidos are keen to integrate and support the local community. We are currently collecting non-perishable food and toiletries for the Red Cross Food Bank.

We are very sociable and most sessions are followed by a post-activity coffee, cake or breakfast, depending on the time of day. Follow us on Facebook to keep up-to-date with our latest activities (https://www.facebook.com/ groups/490933409244200). We look forward to seeing you soon.

The Interactive Linguistic Atlas of Andalucia Includes the Mojácar Accent

Press release by Mojácar Townhall

The University of Granada, under the direction of Professor Alfredo Herrero de Haro, is developing an innovative project: the Interactive Linguistic Atlas of Andalusian Accents. This ambitious project aims to document and analyse the diversity of accents in the autonomous community of Andalusia, despite the increasing linguistic homogenization.

The project includes the accent of Mojácar, which will be studied through samples from

four participants who met the requirement of never having resided outside the municipality. This initiative has the support of Mojácar Town Council which, through its Department of Culture, helped in the finding of the candidates.

This week, the Councillor for Culture, Noemí Linares welcomed Alfredo Herrero de Haro, the director of the project, to the municipality, who stressed the importance of this work, not only to preserve Andalusian accents, but also to plan their impact on the future of the Spanish language.

The Interactive Linguistic Atlas of Andalusia, funded by the department of University, Research and Innovation of the Andalusian Regional Government is proposed to be completed by December 2026.

The project involves the collection of voice recordings of speakers from 500 Andalusian localities, the analysis of which will be presented through 292 interactive maps. These maps will not only show the variation of accents but will also include audio recordings for a more intuitive understanding, facilitating their understanding by both experts and the general public.

Jokes of the Month

The Dinosaur

While looking at a dinosaur fossil at a museum, a man asks the curator, “How old are these?”

The curator replied, “60 million, 2 years, and 33 days.” Impressed, the man asks how he can be so precise. “Well, they told me they were 60 million years old when I started working here, and I have been here for 2 years and 33 days.”

The Hitch Hiker

A woman comes home and catches her husband in bed with a young woman and gets really angry. He hurriedly explains, claiming he was just helping the girl. He says: “The girl was hitch-hiking but didn’t know her relatives’ address, so I brought her home to check in the phone book. When we got here, I saw her shirt was worn out, so I gave her a nice t-shirt you hadn’t worn in years. Her shoes were falling apart too, so I gave her one of your pairs that had been sitting unused for three years.” She thanked me profusely and then jokingly asked, “Is there anything else in this house your wife never uses?” I told her there was one thing!

The Blind Date

“How was your blind date?” a college student asked her room mate. “Terrible!” the room mate answered. “He showed up in his 1932 Rolls Royce.” “Wow! That’s a very expensive classic car. What’s so bad about that?” “He was the original owner.”

WWII

Elderly Man: “Father, during the war I allowed a Jewish refugee to live in my attic.” Priest: “I do not see anything wrong with that. You helped a poor soul survive the war.”

Elderly Man: “I collected rent from him every month because he had a lot of money.” Priest: “That’s not a good thing you did, but it was for a good cause. You helped him survive.”

Elderly Man: “Should I tell him the war is over?”

Fathers and Children

A teenage boy tells his dad that he has some great news: he’s fallen in love and is going to ask a girl out. “Who is it?” the dad asks. His son replies, “Kate, the girl who lives next door.” The father explains that he had an affair with the neighbour a long time ago, and he can’t date Kate because she is his sister…The boy is crushed and won’t leave his room for days. His mother gets worried and goes to ask what is wrong. “I can’t date the girl I love because Dad says she’s my sister,” he says. Happy she can solve the problem the mom says: “Oh don’t worry darling! You can date who you want. He isn’t your father!”

The Four Legs

A wife comes home late one night and quietly opens the door to her bedroom. From under the blanket, she sees four legs instead of just her husband’s two. She reaches for a baseball bat and starts hitting the blanket as hard as she can. Once she’s done, she goes down to the kitchen to have a drink and a cry. As she enters, she sees her husband there, reading a magazine. He says, “Hi darling, your parents have come to visit us unexpectedly, so I let them stay in our bedroom. Did you say hello?”

A 3-Day Pass

An Israeli soldier who had just enlisted asked the Commanding Officer for a 3-day pass. The CO says “Are you crazy? You’ve only just joined the Israeli army that is at war, and you already want a 3-day pass? You must do something really spectacular for that!” The soldier comes back a day later in an Arab tank. The CO was very impressed and asked, “How did you do it?” “Well, I jumped in a tank, and went toward the border with the Arabs. I approached the border, and saw an Arab tank. I put my white flag up and the Arab tank put his white flag up. I said to the Arab soldier, “Do you want to get a three-day pass? He said he did, so we swapped tanks!”

The Notes

Annoyed at her mom, a teenage girl decides to play a joke on her to get some attention. The girl wrote a note saying, “I have run away – don’t bother trying to find me”, put it on her desk, and hid under her bed to catch her mom’s reaction. The mother comes home, sees the note on the desk, and immediately pulls out her iPhone to call her husband. “Good news honey, we don’t have to send her off to college and spend all that money, she left on her own!” The daughter waits for her mom to leave the room and then bursts into tears. She climbs out from under the bed and sees a note taped to the door. The note reads “I can see the light of your phone under the bed. I’m making dinner, it’ll be ready in 30 minutes.”

Watching TV

My wife walked in on me while I was watching a bit of adult porn on TV. In a total panic, I quickly switched the channel to something random that turned out to be the fishing channel, of all things. As she leaves the room, she looks back and says, “You should keep watching porn… you already know how to fish.”

The Parrot

A lady went to a pet shop and immediately spotted a large, beautiful parrot. There was a sign on the cage that said $50. “Why so little?” she asked the pet store owner. The owner replied, “Look, I should tell you first that this bird used to live in a house of ill repute, and sometimes it says some pretty vulgar stuff.” The woman thought about this, but decided she had to have the bird. She took it home and hung the bird’s cage up in her living room and waited for it to say something. The bird looked around the room, then at her, and said, “New house, new madam.” The woman was a bit shocked at the implication, but then thought “that’s not so bad.” When her two teenage daughters returned from school, the bird saw them and said, “New house, new madam, new girls.” The girls and the woman were a bit offended but then began to laugh about the situation. Moments later, the woman’s husband came home from work. The bird looked at him and said, “Hi, Keith!”
