A Sour End to November

he demolition of the last two properties in Cantoria on November 18th, owned by UK expats, has been greeted with dismay. This was another very bad day for Almería, Andalucía and Spain. The first two of the total of four “illegal” houses had been demolished last October. Built in 2003-4, on “rustic” land, they were completely illegal under building regulations, and the mayor of Cantoria, Pedro Llamas, turned a blind eye to their construction. In 2006 the owners were told that their houses were illegal. All the owners eventually returned to the UK, having lost their life savings, abandoning their dream homes. Pedro Llamas was convicted of forging and falsifying official documents authorising the supply of water and electricity, and then denying in an official document that he had done this. He was given a suspended prison sentence of two years and forced to resign as mayor, but this is not much consolation to the owners. He is embroiled in other similar scandals.

The UK press had a field day, partly from information supplied from this area. Unfortunately they seized on the figure of 4,000 Brits “battling to save their homes”, and “300,000 illegal built houses in Southern Spain”. The recent Junta de Andalucía promise to “recognize” many of these illegal homes, specifically designed for “good faith” buyers, was not mentioned. The new regulations are not retrospective, unfortunately, for old demolition orders given by a court some years ago, as in this case. The minuscule “letter of the law” was satisfied, but nothing else!

New Year's Eve (Noche Vieja) is celebrated in Spain as in any other country, but with 12 grapes to eat, on every stroke of the famous clock in the Puerta del Sol square in Madrid, along with a glass of cava, the excellent Spanish champagne equivalent. January 5th is the evening before “El Dia de Los Reyes Magos” (Three Kings). Children may have had a small present at Christmas, but the main ones on January 6th. The traditional greeting for the festivities is “Felices Fiestas”. We wish this to all our readers and advertisers. As in other years there is no January 'Focus' magazine, but we are back in February!

Christmas lights and decorations are now being put up in cities, towns and villages. The plan to save electricity by turning off alternate street lights is being extended to these lights as well. For those of our readers not familiar with the Spanish Christmas and New Year traditions, Christmas Eve (“Noche Buena”), is really more important than Christmas day. The evening meal (not turkey!), is when families get together, and those working or living away return home. Only a few Spanish restaurants will be open on Christmas Eve, for this reason. Christmas Day is an important religious day, but not otherwise. There will have been many celebrations from December 22nd, when the “El Gordo” (the fat one) lottery is drawn. There is a follow up lottery on January 6th, also with big prizes.

Bearing this in mind, it underlines the importance of municipal residents, of any nationality, exercising their right to vote in the municipal elections next May. This is a simple thing to arrange, once a person is on the “padrón” (official list of residents). We explain how to do this at the top of our “Local News” items. Tourist numbers for 2014 still continue to make records, and the percentage of non-Spanish property purchasers is likely to be up again in 2014. From a shaky 4% in 2009, last year they climbed

Focus on Local News Have You Registered To Vote? Last month we stressed the importance of registering to vote in the May 2015 local council elections. Residents of any nationality (even if you do not have a “residencia” residence permit) are allowed to vote, not just Spanish people. Municipalities with a large number of non-Spanish citizens, can have a major influence on the councillors elected in their municipality from 2015-2019 if they vote. You can't vote if you are not on the voters list. To get on, and it has to be before December 30th, you have to be on the “padrón” as the first step. This is a confidential list of residents in all municipalities. Going on the “padrón” helps your town hall have better services, and as individuals it is necessary for many purposes. Your town hall will happily put any inhabitants, of any age, on this list. Once you are on the “padrón” you can apply to go on the voters list, and you can do it at the same time. If you are already on the “padrón”, but not on the voters list, go and apply. The main article where we explained all this was in our November magazine on page 28. New Fiesta Dates in 2015 Some of the long awaited change in fiesta (holiday) dates will come into force in 2015. Part of the problem has been the “puentes” (bridge holidays), when extra days are added by people for a holiday before or after the official one. Some eight fiesta days will be common to all autonomous regions (In our case Andalucía), and only three will be mid week. Common fiesta dates throughout Spain will comprise January 1st; Good Friday, April 3rd; Day of the worker, May 1st; Assumption of the Virgin Mary, August 15th; Hispanic day, October 12th; the Immaculate Conception, December 8th; and Christmas Day. January 6th (Epiphany) can be changed from the Tuesday, to the day before, taking out the MondayTuesday “puente” if the autonomous communities so wish. A regional fiesta date in Andalucía will be Andalucía Day, February 28th. In the future, fiesta dates that fall on a Sunday (then slide to the Monday) will be re-worked. December 6th, Day of the Spanish

Constitution, officially ceases to be a fiesta day in Spain, as in 2015 it is a Sunday anyway. Autonomous communities can still slide this fiesta to the Monday, if they wish! All Saints’ Day on Sunday, November 1st in 2015 (when whole swathes of the population go to cemeteries to remember dead relatives) will not be slid to the Monday. These changes make the whole holiday calendar a bit messy, but the emphasis is to lose less working days to holidays. There is of course, opposition from the Catholic Church to alter religious fiesta dates. Local fiestas will still be held on two days of the year, to be determined locally.

The Duchess of Alba has died

The “Super Aristocrat” The world famous Spanish Duchess of Alba died on November 20th, aged 88. She had more nobility titles than anyone else in the world, and was officially known as “Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart and Siva, Duchess of Alba”. She was the daughter of the 17th Duke of Alba. She partly traced her heritage back to the English monarchy. She owned a number of palaces, huge amounts of land, and normally resided in Seville. Her personal fortune has been estimated at 3.5 billion euros, and her art and book collection is outstanding, including a first edition of “El Quijote”, and a map used by Columbus. All her life she was a very colourful figure who lived life to the full, and then some! She married a “commoner”, her third husband just three years ago, described as her “toy boy”, a former Social Security employee. She was a devotee of bull fighting, loved dancing, and was a skilled painter. “The Times” newspaper described her as “The super-aristocrat” and in “The Guardian”, “The most admired person of the nobility in the world”.

Large numbers of the press started camping out there from the Friday, with police erecting crash barriers. A very large concert in Madrid on November 28th had been cancelled.

Car Letters The Spanish 'DGT' traffic authorities nationwide, are sending out five million letters to registered keepers of vehicles that are 7-10 years old. In Almería province, this applies to 10,600 cars and 4x4's. They want to know whether their records are up to date, with some vehicles showing no 'ITV' (MOT) test, or insurance. They expect that some vehicles may have been privately scrapped, or just abandoned on private land, without the “baja” (official notice of scrapping or a change of use), being made. In other cases they expect to find that a proper transfer to a new owner has not been made, so the vehicle is still registered in the name of the seller. Anyone receiving these

Diagonal Ear Lobe Lines Spanish cardiologists presented a scientific study in November dealing with ears. They studied the top of the ear lobes in patients who had suffered a stroke or a heart attack. They found that in 30% of these patients there was a 45% well defined straight line just above the ear lobes. In other patients not having cardiology problems, the “line” in these people was less pronounced, more rounded, and merged into the ear cavity. 50% of people who had suffered a brain haemorrhage also exhibited this marked line as well. The ear is one of the human appendages that continually change during a life, and now seems to give evidence of health problems. The cardiologists suggest that the ears should be looked at in front of a mirror, or by an observer, and if this line is evident, ask for a check-up. Diabetics, high blood pressure, and very high cholesterol if not treated or controlled, can give an increased risk of heart related problems. The study is to be extended, as only 300 people were examined in this first check.

Focus on Local News A Foreign Pension Amnesty There are many Spaniards who have returned to Spain with a pension from another country. There are also a very large number of ex-pats who receive a pension from their former country of residence, a grand total of 1.8 million people. Both these groups of people should declare this pension income in June every year on a tax return. The Spanish government is giving a tax amnesty to the people who have not declared this income, from January 1st until the end of June next year. People who in the last four years were fined for not declaring their pensions, or paid back tax, will get a rebate. There are a large number of these people drawing such pensions, who need pay no tax at all, as their income is below the tax thresholds. Pensioners receive a personal allowance of just over 6,000 euros, and another 2,600 euros off as the pension counts as an income, just like a normal worker. There is then a tax-free amount. A married person can get an additional age allowance from their partner. If there is already some tax being taken off in the pension-providing country, this will be taken into account. The Spanish tax authority accepts that many pensioners will not pay any tax, but consider their pension income must be declared.

Both ex-pat and Spanish properties have been demolished in various locations, but the ex-pat ones hit the headlines, here and in the UK. Since 2006, some 16 properties in Almería province have been demolished, 11 of them Spanish owned. The Almería tourist board go to trade fairs in the UK, to attract tourists, who may well be potential buyers, so these demolitions make no sense at all. The percentage of non-Spanish house buyers has been rising steadily. In 2010 it had sunk to 4%, but in 2013 went from 8% to 13%. 2014 figures, not all out yet of course, are expected to show another increase. We comment on the Cantoria demolitions in a following article.

Not True! One of the local Spanish newspapers recently published a short report regarding the flights to or from Almería airport in the winter. Amongst other flights, it stated that for some of the winter period the flights from Birmingham, Nottingham (East Midlands), Manchester and Dublin would continue. Wherever they got this information from, it is not true! One of our local English newspapers repeated this information, having obviously copied it from the Spanish press, so they got it wrong as well. The only UK flights at present are Gatwick to Almería and back on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The Demolition Disaster On November 18th, the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) came to Cantoria again, and demolished the remaining two of the four houses built on “rustic” land in 2003. Michelin Stars At a recent ceremony in Marbella, the gastronomy “Michelin Guide for Spain and Portugal 2015” was presented. The 8 restaurants in Spain who have 3* are unchanged, and 18 are rated 2*. 19 new ones have been given a 1* category, but some 9 from last year have lost theirs. In Almería province, 'La Costa' restaurant in El Ejido, and 'Alejandro' in Roquetas keep their star. 'La Costa' has retained their rating longer than any other restaurant in Andalucía.

More Beds Now Health authorities announced on November 20th that the 21 beds taken out of service at the HuércalOvera hospital were being re-opened. The present demand for beds has resulted in this step being taken. The regional health authority were heavily

Despite some alarmist information in the local press, the hospital have always said that their surgical procedures were at a 100% level, operations needed were all being carried out in the day hospital or the main hospital, and the beds would be opened again.

New Mojácar Political Party Headed by Jessica Simpson, the English councillor in opposition at Mojácar, a new political party has been formed. This has been done in preparation for the municipal elections, held countrywide in Spain next May 22nd. The new party is named “Ganemos Mojácar” (“Lets win Mojácar”). This is a union of the “Mojácar Se Mueve” party that Jessica represents, the “Mojácar Positiva” party, and the “Izquierda Unida” party. The legal framework and statutes for the new party are being put in place. The Izquierda Union councillor, Carlos Rodríguez, will be number two on the list of council members to be presented at the next elections. One of the jobs of the new party will be to ensure that all eligible voters register to vote, along with other long term objectives. We feature this need to vote in the first topic of our “Local News” this month, as being of paramount importance, not just for Mojácar but in every municipality.

A New Video Mojácar town hall has unveiled a new promotional tourist video, underlining the charm of the village and playa, and the wealth of different activities available. Entitled “The Mojácar brand”, the video stresses that whilst the night life is an attraction, the historic village, sign posted walks, and cultural and gastronomy experiences, are all important. It points out there are 17 kms of coast and the range of activities are portrayed through the eyes of a family with a mother, father and two children, and their “unforgettable memories”. At the presentation, the mayoress, Rosa María Cano, was asked why there were almost no young people in the video. She agreed that Mojácar had something for everybody, but stated she wished to stress the attractions for normal families. The statue of Christ at Vera

November 9th 1518 During the summer of 1518 there were major earth tremors in this region, starting in the summer. Huércal-Overa, Lubrin, and the Almanzora valley all experienced these tremors. After a quiet period until November, a major earthquake hit Vera on November 9th, and reduced the whole town to rubble, including the Muslim castle. No-one knows how high this would have been on the modern day Richter scale, of course, but it was a very large one. On this November 9th, some 496 years afterwards, a solemn procession was made to the former “ermita” (chapel), where the very large statue of Christ now stands, erected some 65 years ago to give a blessing to Vera. A book recording the earthquake by three local authors was presented to the public the same day, at a ceremony in the Convento de la Victoria de Vera, the former church now a concert and exhibition building.

Fat Policemen The “sleeping policemen” traffic calming bumps in Spain were mostly laid down before the Ministry of Transport issued regulations as to the height and permissible slope. Huércal-Overa town hall have announced that they are reviewing the situation in their municipality. They may add to the ones already in place, but they intend to modify existing ones

Carboneras is another town where their speed bumps are particularly prominent and now illegal, following the regulations put in place after they were made. The Guardia Civil police investigated and told the website to delete this entry, which they did, and also interviewed the alleged person responsible. María José has a good reputation as a councillor in Zurgena, and has a young daughter.

Antonio Carmona Statue Vera now has a statue in the town of probably their most famous inhabitant, Antonio Carmona. He was responsible for building up the Terraza Carmona hotel and restaurant, with international gourmet chefs coming to special show cooking events, and also promoted bull fighting in Vera. The hotel and restaurant has been given many prestigious awards. Antonio Carmona died last year, but his family continue to offer similar events that are considered a major tourist attraction and have made Vera famous, not just in Spain.

The Roquetas aquarium has been hovering on the edge of bankruptcy for many years. A new loan from the 'Cajamar' banking group, and extension of the payment period for another previous loan has helped make it viable. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in Andalucía has made a grant of 519,000 euros to open an education and exhibition facility explaining the types of fish, and the past and present fishing industry and sea life. A section will deal with the protected sea plant “Posidonia”, present off the sea in many areas of Almería coastline, particularly off Roquetas. It is cheaper, does not involve paying for a niche, or any subsequent maintenance. The ability to scatter the ashes in a favourite location, or put them in a specialised area located at cemeteries is gaining in popularity. There are five crematoriums in Almería province and the one at Níjar handles 60 cremations a month. Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist at CERN (The European Organization for Nuclear Research), invented the World Wide Web and made the first test around Christmas 1990. The web was originally conceived to meet the demand for informationsharing between scientists in universities and institutes around the world. The first website was dedicated to the World Wide Web project itself and was hosted on Berners-Lee's NeXT computer. The website described the basic features of the web. This original web server is still at CERN. In 2013 CERN reinstated the world's first website to its original address. On 30 April 1993 CERN put the World Wide Web software in the public domain. The London toy emporium Hamleys is predicting that their most popular toy at Christmas 2014 will be a doll. “My Friend Cayla” retails in the UK at 75 pounds sterling, and incorporates speech-to-text Google “Safe search” technology. It needs to be synced with a smartphone or tablet. She will respond to questions ranging from her likes and dislikes, along with general knowledge, sports information, and other subjects on-line. The “Safe search” technology means that there can be no experimenting with bad language, or unsuitable content for children. TV pictures revealed scenes of total devastation and chaos when the tidal wave hit land after a 9.0 magnitude quake under the Indian Ocean, off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Geology and earthquake experts were rushed to TV studios to try and explain what this very new word “tsunami” meant, that hardly anyone could spell. Final fatalities were over 250,000. 550,000 were injured, and 5 million people lost homes, or were without food or drinking water. The earthquake was compared to 23,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs. The farthest recorded death was at Rooi Els in South Africa, 8,000 kms away from the epicentre.

No Christmas Celebrations!

In 1647, after the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell banned any festivities at Christmas. Cromwell was a successful military leader, turned politician, and titled himself “Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland”. He was a fierce defender of the protestant religion, and believed that it was immoral to celebrate pagan rituals like conventional Christmas activities on the day he considered the most holy day of the year. Celebrating Christmas, other than in church, became a criminal offence and could result in a large fine or a prison term. He died in 1658 and the ban was lifted in 1660. He carried out “ethnic cleansing” in Ireland where he killed large numbers of Irish Roman Catholics. The Tallest Christmas Tree

The Rockefeller Centre in Manhattan is credited with having the highest natural Christmas tree in the US every year. The chosen 2014 tree is an 85 foot high Norwegian Spruce found growing in Danville, Pennsylvania, three hrs away from Manhattan. Its owners, Dan Sigafoos and Rachel Drosdick-Sigafoos, agreed to let the tree be cut down, and this was done on Nov. 5th. A large crane then manoeuvred the tree onto a flat-bed lorry. Having your tree chosen to be on display at the Rockefeller centre is considered a real honour. This tree is the 82nd since 1933, and is being lit up on Dec. 3rd. Thousands of visitors from all over the world will admire it until January 7th, when the lights will be turned off. Charlie Chaplin Died on Christmas Day

Charlie Chaplin was an English actor, comedian, and filmmaker who rose to fame in the silent era. He died in his sleep at the age of 88, on Christmas Day, 1977, in Switzerland. Chaplin's childhood in London was defined by poverty and hardship. As his father was absent and his mother struggled financially, he was sent to a workhouse twice before the age of nine. When he was fourteen, his mother was committed to a mental asylum. Chaplin began performing at an early age, touring music halls and later working as a stage actor and comedian. He was awarded a “KBE” for his services to film-making becoming Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin KBE. He composed the music for many of his films himself.

A New Car for Christmas?

The rise in confidence from purchasers of new cars in Spain is reflected in a sales boom. The discount incentive schemes, known as the “P.I.V.E.” (Programa de Incentivos al Vehiculo Eficiente) have been extremely successful. Purchasers can obtain discounts by buying a low CO2 emissions vehicle, with their old one being scrapped. These incentive schemes last for a fixed period of time, or until the grant money for each one runs out. The sixth such scheme used up all the money at the start of November, and it is almost certain that the “P.I.V.E. 7” scheme, planned for the start of 2015, will be brought forward. The Spanish department of Trade & Industry gives a subsidy of 1,000 euros, matched by the manufacturer, so 2,000 euros total. Private owners of vehicles over 10 years old, or 7 in the case of a van, are eligible to take advantage of the scheme, along with a small company with less than 10 employees. There are similar schemes for large families to buy a “people carrier” with a subsidy of 3,000 euros. The dealer selling the new vehicle has to scrap the old one and provide a certificate showing this has been done, and buyers have to have owned their old vehicle for a minimum of six months. The current top price limit for a “normal” vehicle is 25,000 euros, giving a wide choice. Many car dealerships offer a free extra “package” of goodies, to get the sale. Recently, the second annual four day motor fair “Toyomotor” took place at El Toyo near Almería city. The company “Image marketing and promotions” organized the event and 29 different dealerships displayed their cars, with “road shows” from major manufacturers. Each dealer was given 3,000 square metres of floor space, and there was a large café. An estimated 25,000 people turned up, and 130 sales contracts were signed up on the spot. Dealers were delighted with the response, and say more sales have been agreed once the new “P.I.V.E.” plan is in force. A total of 76,000 cars or 4x4 vehicles were sold

throughout Spain in October, taking the total this year to 716,000. Sales of new vehicles have risen steadily since the schemes first came into place, and it is hoped that by the end of December, total sales will amount to 850,000 vehicles, a real shot in the arm for the motor trade dealers and manufacturers. 70% of sales are made to the general public.

The top three new cars sold in Spain are the Seat Ibiza, Citröen C4, and Seat León. Seat is delighted with this, because all Seat cars are manufactured in Spain. This is not always true of cars we associate with the UK, France, Germany, and Sweden. The top selling Ford Fiesta in the UK is manufactured in Germany, although many components are shipped there from Dagenham. Other Ford Fiestas are made in China, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa. The majority of the most popular car in France, the Renault Clio, are made in Turkey. A Spanish factory in Pamplona manufacture Volkswagen Polos, and many cars from the Golf range come from Mexico. The Swedish company Volvo is one where we may imagine serious blonde men and women, quietly working to strains of “ABBA”. The vast majority of cars are made in China and Malaysia, with some coming from Belgium. A Chinese company bought Volvo cars from Ford in 2010. Volvo sales executives are very much aware that purchasers do associate their vehicles with Sweden, the country that first produced them.

Childhood Addiction

here are serious concerns and worries from child psychiatrists, teachers, and social workers, relating to a special type of addiction in children. The problems can occur in children aged thirteen or younger, and certainly in older children. You may be thinking this is about pills and party drugs, young girls taking very large doses of slimming tablets (freely available over the counter), or alcohol abuse. In reality, these concerns relate to addictions to the Internet, mobile 'phone use, social networking, computer games and consoles. “Indalajer Almería” is an association in Almería city set up in 1990, to help persons addicted to fruit machines, lottery tickets, or on-line gambling. These addicts are usually mature adults, and they spend money that should be destined for other use, to satisfy their cravings. Now, young children are brought to the association by parents, teachers, or even the police. It is increasingly common for many children to have their own mobile 'phones around the age of ten. Presents nowadays, when children attend their first communion in church, are often games consoles. One of the initial problems is when parents give very young children their smart 'phones to play games to keep them quiet. Young children also often see their parents sending constant text messages, playing games on their own smart 'phones, or surfing “facebook”. Children see this as being a normal behaviour for their parents and copy them.

The experts at “Indalajer” say that homework is often neglected, or poorly carried out, and these children are often inattentive in school. Other children do not take advantage of organized out of school activities, sports, or spend time with their friends. Excessive time spent on the Internet or other related activities can result in children lacking conversational skills, reading skills, or sharing in the family life. They also have less self confidence to interact socially with other children and adults. “Indalajer” say that the addiction may extend to complicated games, with a large number of “lives” that children play to excess, late in the evening or in their rooms when they should be asleep. A conference recently organized by the Junta de Andalucía in Seville with health and education experts, looked at various surveys. They concluded that many children between the ages of twelve and fourteen, spent as much as three hours a day on Internet or related activities. 40% of older children had continual contact with friends via facebook or text messages, more than at school. The paediatrician, Pilar Codoñer, expressed concern about obesity becoming a problem for these children. Experts from a specialized unit of the Guardia Civil police, voiced their concerns that unless parents monitored their children’s Internet access, the danger of sexual grooming was still a concern. They also reported that in many cases, children became abusive, evasive, and lied about the time they spent on these activities. In severe cases, some of these older children, if their time was cut down, became violent towards their parents. If such cases were reported to the Guardia Civil, they referred these young adults to specialist counselling. María Sanchez is a child psychologist, and said that parents should try to keep mobile 'phones, tablets, laptops, and games consoles in a downstairs area, when children went to bed. She also stressed that parents who were not computer literate, or fully aware of social networking sites, faced the biggest problem in supervising their children. Child addicts, like any other addicts, have to be weaned off their habits, not suddenly banned. They need real help to interact normally with friends and family. Food for thought!

The Cantoria Houses

n November 18th , two houses in Las Terreras de Cantoria were demolished. This followed the previous demolition of one completed house and the structure of another. The four houses had been built on “rustic” land not zoned for urban development in 2003. The mayor of Cantoria, Pedro Llamas, was subsequently given a 24 month prison sentence (suspended) and a ban on holding public office for 23 months. In 2004 he falsified documents, and later officially denied in writing that he had authorized the supply of water and electricity himself, knowing the houses were illegal. On November 6th, the lawyer Alejandro Navarro, representing all four UK owners, asked for a postponement of the latest demolition on “humanitarian grounds”, as they had lost all their money, and bought in good faith. He stressed that the 789,000 euros compensation court order in 2012 against the builder had never been paid, and he was now in bankruptcy. This builder, Francisco Pedrosa, had been given the light sentence of 11 months in prison (suspended) and a ban on carrying out any activity as a builder for 6 months. So what have these demolitions achieved, apart from very bad publicity for Almería province and Spain in general? The Junta de Andalucía, responsible for carrying out the demolition, described it as “lamentable” but said a firm court order had to be obeyed. So the order for the demolition has been complied with, and planning laws enforced, but at what cost?

Just before the demolition started, a speech was made on site by Rámon Salas, the President of the “Mancomunidad del Almanzora”, the association of municipalities in this Levante area. The business association of Albox were represented, a Málaga association of owners, and AUAN who fight for the owners of “illegal” houses in this area. Other expats displayed bill boards, and one was very apt. It proclaimed (in Spanish), “Demolition= Recession= Unemployment”. This time, the date and time of the demolition had been advised well beforehand, unlike the case of Helen & Len Prior, the owners of the first house demolished in Vera. Maura Hillen, the president of AUAN, knew nothing about these houses until after the first two were demolished. This time she became the spokesperson for newspaper reporters in the UK, and the BBC. Margaret and Peter Hegarty, now aged 71 and 64, owners of one of the two houses demolished were tracked down. They told reporters their sad story, and how they had put their life savings into buying in Spain. When they were first told their house was illegal in 2006, the builder said it was a “mistake”. Their house no longer had any windows or doors, and had been abandoned for years. The UK press contacted their former neighbours Frank and Janet Dole, with a similar story. John Brooks, aged 73 and one of the other owners, told the 'Daily Telegraph', “It is unbelievable that at a time when Spain is suffering such a deep economic crisis and high unemployment; needing tourism and foreign investment, the authorities would do this”. He added, “It sends a message - do not buy in Spain!”.

Regarding financial compensation, a Junta spokesperson observed that the “illegal” buildings were started without a building licence. Because of this, there was no licence to be declared void, and no compensation proceedings were possible against Cantoria councillors at the time, as is likely in a Zurgena case. Pedro Llamas is involved in other “illegal houses” cases, now going through the courts. A new prison sentence would mean he actually goes to prison, to applause, of course!

Exhibitions “Las Señales del Tiempo” (Signs of the Time) is a travelling exhibition that will go to various municipalities in Almería province. Out of a total of 89 photos submitted from 30 photographers, the winner of the competition was Zuleika García. Her 20 photographs depict parts of the body relating to elderly people, such as hands, eyes, or lips, showing the signs of old age. The identity of the photographers who sent in examples of their work was kept anonymous. 'Los Articultores' is an exhibition of painters, sculptures, photographers and other artists. There are paintings by Thomas

Neukirch and Ivan Kral, photographs by Rod Westwood, Marine Pacault, Marc Dolci, and collages by Clara Mata. The exhibition is in the Centro de Arte, Mojácar fuente, below the village. Opening hours are Tuesdays to Fr i d ays , 10 . 3 0 a m - 4 . 3 0 p m , Saturdays & Sundays 10.30am2pm. The exhibition can be visited until December 11th.
