A Much Better Situation

his time last year there was still a curfew and a travel ban, and hundreds of workers applied for help from the ‘ERTE’ scheme that paid 70% of a person’s wages, provided the employer kept them on the books. There were special restrictions in December and Christmas. Fortunately, the vaccination push that did not start for the general public in Spain until February has been extremely successful. In our “In the News” sections and an article we comment on the present situation and proposals that now include COVID-19 booster shots for people over the age of 60. Wearing face masks in indoor locations is still mandatory, in schools and close contact areas outdoors, such as markets. Face masks are still considered to inhibit infections by 50%, and they will also cut down on the numbers of people who get the flu, which was the case last year.

and likewise, Wednesday, December 8th is a national religious fiesta, which is “The Feast of the Immaculate Conception”. Town halls, official offices, banks and professional undertakings will be closed, and in some cases on the Tuesday as well. Taking addition holidays before, during or after fiesta days is known as a “puente”, a “bridge”. Wednesday, December 22nd is a big day in Spain when the ‘El Gordo’ (The fat one) lottery is drawn. There are enormous prizes to be won, as well as millions of smaller ones, and we explain how this works in our “In the News” section. This state-run lottery brings in a lot of money from ticket sales, but the Spanish taxman takes 20% of all winnings over 2,500 euros, taxed at source.

Health authorities in Spain still have their fingers crossed that there will be no major spike over Christmas with more people meeting indoors and colder weather. In the News The Major Vaccination Progress In an article we comment on the fact that apart from Portugal, with only 10 million inhabitants, Spain is by far the best country in Europe for people vaccinated against COVID-19. From a slow start last February, the vaccination programme has been very speedy, and this is true in our province. In mid-November, 1.14 million vaccinations had been given which is 81% of the population. Mass vaccination sites started up on February 22nd and by May 11th 25% of the population had received at least one dose which rose to 50% on June 24th. On November 11th 592,000 people had been given at least one dose, which is the 81% figure, and 580,000 were fully vaccinated which is 79.7%. Some people who had the first dose had not turned up for the second dose and this applied to 4% of people aged 20-29, and 3% aged 12-19. Health authorities urged the people in these age groups who had the necessary gap between the first and second doses to have the second one. It is thought that some of this age group mistakenly think that the first dose gives sufficient protection, and this is apparently a problem on a larger scale in the UK. Spain’s Minister for Health has announced that the booster jab will be extended to people over the age of 60 and health and care workers, a total of 16 million people. The booster jab will be available to this group once all the people over the age of 70, and then over the age of 65 have had theirs, after the minimum period of six months since the last of the two-dose vaccinations, so it will not happen quickly. In Almería province it will apply to 73,000 persons aged 60-69. The Janssen Vaccine The 34,000 people in Almería province who received the single dose of the Janssen vaccine are being given a booster jab of either the Pfizer or Moderna ones that started in November. These are being given after a period of three months since the vaccination, not six months as for the other vaccines. It has been determined that the Janssen vaccine is not as effective over a period of time as the other types. This single dose was

given to certain categories of vulnerable people with specific medical problems, transitory workers such as those working in agriculture that total 4,500 in the Níjar area, mariners who were going to be at sea and not able to have a second dose, and inmates of the El Acebuche prison to head off a high infection rate. Following studies, the effectiveness of the Moderna vaccine is shown to be from 87-89%, the Pfizer vaccine from 77%78% and the AstraZenica vaccine 68%. The Anti-flu and COVID Booster Jabs When the 2021 anti-flu vaccination campaign started, it was stated that for people over the age of 70 who had received their second COVID19 jab six months ago, they would be given the booster jab at the same time as the one for the flu. This is true in some regions but not everywhere. There may be a gap between the flu and the booster jabs because of logistics problems. Where there are limited low temperature freezers, people having the booster jabs are lumped together on certain days. This means that the number of vaccines needed for each of these days is fully calculated in advance. Hospitalisations Are the Key Figures The head of the infectious disease unit at the largest hospital in Barcelona has stated that the key numbers regarding the COVID-19 pandemic are the hospitalisations. He agrees that any rises in the numbers per 100,000 are a cause for concern, but on November 16th when there was a rise in cases, there were 2,180 patients in hospitals in Spain which was only 1.77% of all beds. Last January there were 31,000 people in hospitals and 5,000 in intensive care wards, but the current number was 427. In Andalucía on the same day, beds occupied in intensive care wards was less than 1%. He stated that non-vaccinated people were 4.5 times more likely to be admitted to hospital and on November 16th this worked out as being 77% of patients aged 30-39, and 78% aged 20-29. A project that will be connected to the existing substation is the installation of 20 offshore wind turbines between Carboneras and Níjar, opposite La Isleta de Moro. At peak capacity they will supply 300MW of power that is 28% of the electricity needed in Almería province. There will be 20 wind turbines that will be 261 metres tall above sea level, and a special feature is that they will be floating. This is a technique that was first used in 2017 where fixing the wind turbines to the sea bed is not feasible. From manufacture to installation there will be employment for 4,000 people and 55% will be professionals from Andalucía. When operational, the running and maintenance will give work to 120 direct and indirect employees. The company 'Mar de Ágata', made up of 'BlueFloat Energy' and 'Sener' will provide and install the wind turbines that have a life of 30 years and will eliminate 12 million tons of CO2 from other 'dirtier' power producers. The “Friends of Cabo de Gata” are getting signatures protesting against the location. Another project for Carboneras is the provision of 20 tonnes per day of green hydrogen, and this plant will use electricity from the wind farm. At Tabernas near to the large investigative solar platform, the company 'Aguila Capital' have inaugurated a solar farm called 'La Cabrita' that can supply 50MW of

power which is sufficient to supply 22,000 properties and will eliminate 25,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum. This solar farm is the first one in Spain installed by 'Aguila Capital' that is a venture capital company based in Madrid with German owners, and has installed wind farms in other countries.

Domestic Violence Alerts Unfortunately, domestic violence towards women has increased during the pandemic in many countries, when couples with problems have more contact with each other. For women who wish to report domestic violence in Spain there is a special phone number which is 061. The phone operator can speak Spanish, English and French and the call will not show on a call log. Alternatively, the Guardia Civil police can be contacted on 062 or the national police in cities via 091. Police responding to a call for help will interview the woman in the home and always take the male partner to a police station for questioning. During the pandemic lockdown, the Junta de Andalucía and ‘farmacias’ (chemists) introduced a code word so a domestic abuse victim could go to a chemist without raising suspicion. The code work was to ask for a “Mascarilla 19” or “Facemask 19” and the staff at the chemist would then phone the police. An international “signal for help”, that originated in Canada and the US, involves showing a person an open palm, putting the thumb into the palm and closing the four fingers over the thumb. In the UK in some regions, bar staff will intervene or call the police if a woman requires help if she is in a situation that she is not happy with and asks to speak to “Angela”. This started in Lincolnshire with posters put up in bars, but is being rolled out in London by the Metropolitan Police. Proposals to Reduce Electricity Prices In September, Teresa Ribera, Spain’s Minister for the Ecological Transition, announced that the electricity supply companies were making an excessive profit from the high cost of electricity to the tune of 2.6 billion euros. She announced that this would have to be paid back, which put her on a collision course with the supply companies who claimed that the 2.6 billion euros was not purely profit, and part of the money was earmarked for investment in renewable energy sources to reduce prices. Teresa Ribera claimed that the electricity generated from the cheap renewable ways of producing electricity was being sold at the same price as the expensive gas sources. Another claim was that supply companies were receiving subsidies for the purchase of CO2 emission rights, but they were claiming these for electricity produced from renewable energy sources that do not have any CO2 emissions. Eventually there was a compromise, with a reduced claw-back, conditional on the supply companies offering long term sensible prices to industry. For the majority of domestic consumers there are not at present any proposals to reduce the high costs which are expected to continue until early 2022. What has been announced is an injection of 100 million euros to cover the increased cost of the “bono social”, the discount on the cost of electricity that people on low incomes, or are vulnerable, can claim. We explain in another “In the News” item how this works.

A Police Search Engine The National Police in Madrid have unveiled a very large search engine called “Orión” that brings together all the information from many other sites via a single “click”. It immediately flags up people who are “persons of interest”, criminal convictions, names of persons who have been investigated, custody of children and those considered at risk along with offences relating to paedophiles. It covers information regarding frontier controls, flights, ports and hotel bookings along with any offences, vehicle details, driving licence information, insurance and motoring offences. Fingerprints, DNA testing and other samples collected from crime scenes can also be accessed. There is also a phonetic search that will tie in with information regarding countries that do not use the Latin alphabet. The search engine has been entirely set up by their own experts and it is stated that there are no problems with dataprotection, as all the information already exists on other sites. More ‘AVE’ News In our September magazine we explained that work on two sections of the ‘AVE’ (The high-speed train from Murcia to Almería) had stopped. These were the 26km Pulpí to Vera section and the 26km penultimate section from Níjar to Río Andarax. Both construction consortiums wanted a 20% increase in their agreed contract price. The disputes have been settled with an increase for “prime materials” such as fuel, concrete and the price of steel. The Chairman of the Almería Chamber of Trade has set up a team of experts that are civil engineers, rail transport engineers, surveyors and assessors from Almería, Murcia and Valencia. They intend to monitor the work being done and make official complaints if they consider the necessary progress is not taking place. The AVE cannot reach Pulpí, on the border of Murcia and Almería, until the Lorca-Pulpí section is finished. Whilst a budget price has been agreed, and tenders submitted, the work has not currently been adjudicated, although this is promised “soon”. The

In the News team have visited the two sections in our province where work has started again, but complain that progress is still too slow. There have been claims that the constructors have reduced the number of workers to increase their profit margins. The experts say that at the present rate, meeting completion dates on both the sections are “impossible”. They are also monitoring the work on the “dry port” at Níjar that is a logistics hub with a link from the AVE beside the A-7 motorway, and not too far from Carboneras port. Horticulturalists and other industries want a dry port at Pulpí and are prepared to pay for it themselves. There are no current proposals from ‘Adif’, the rail authority, that this will be included. The experts also point out that goods transported on the AVE line will greatly cut CO2 emissions by reducing lorry traffic. 5 Million Euros Fine For ‘Glovo’ The Spanish High Court ruled last year that “riders” who mostly delivered food were not selfemployed, they were employees of the company. As such, their Social Security payments had to be made by the company, and they were entitled to normal labour rights, and the companies involved had to have converted their riders to the new system by August. In Seville, the Department of Employment have fined the Spanish company ‘Glovo’ 8.5 million euros for non-compliance relating to their 1,300 riders. The fine is made up of 6.5 million euros for not obeying the law, and two million for the difference in Social Security payments between self-employed and employed persons. The UK based company ‘Deliveroo’ have only a small share of the Spanish market and they announced that they were pulling out of Spain at the end of November. They have come to an agreement with their 4,000 riders that they will receive a redundancy payment of 45 days per year worked. ‘Uber Eats’ have introduced a new system that they claim makes their riders selfemployed sub-contractors who will be called upon to make deliveries according to the demand, not permanently, and without contracts. It seems

quite likely that they will not get away with this interpretation, and the CCOO workers union state that this is just a “ruse” to get round the law. The 'Turrón' Court Case The ex-mayoress of Turre, María Isabel López, who is still a councillor, has been in court in Almería city regarding her refusal in 2018, when she was the mayoress, to give a licence to allow a trader to sell 'Turrón' (A traditional type of almond fudge) during the San Francisco fiesta weekend. The 'fiscalía' (Spanish Crown Prosecution Service) asked for a ban on holding public office for 12 years, and the payment of the amount of profit that the trader lost. The persons selling the turron had been doing so for three generations from 1949 on the same pitch, and in court they stated that the Policía Local (local police) told them that the mayoress had given a licence to other people which was “favouritism”. The mayoress is claiming that it was the Policía who advised her not to issue a licence after there was an “incident” in her office when the trader came to complain. The fiscalía contend that there was a correct procedure if the town hall wished to suspend a licence for a valid reason, and the refusal was her sole decision that was arbitrary and unjust and an infraction of article 103 of the Spanish Constitution. . Unwanted or Expired Medication Farmacias (chemists) in Spain have a system called “Sigre” that consists of collecting medical drugs and tablets that are no longer required, or are past their expiry date. Large farmacias have collection bins, and smaller one will take them over the counter. In Almería province there are 330 bins or collection points and 3,850 throughout Andalucía. From the records when medication has been prescribed it is stated that 90% of families in Almería province return unwanted or out of date items. They are collected and sorted, and a small percentage is put back into the normal system. The vast majority are disposed of in a way that is ecologically friendly, and any plastic

Other sums of money include 17 million euros for the new hospital at Roquetas de Mar that has a total cost of 30 million euros, and 21 million for the completion of the Almanzora motorway. 4.5 million is for improvements in sewage treatment, and 4.9 million for repairs and expansion at Almería port. King Felipe VI and Cosentino The Spanish King Felipe VI came to the Maestro Padilla Auditorio in Almería city at the end of October to present Francisco Mártinez Cosentino, the CEO and owner of 'Cosentino', with one of the “Queen's Awards” for outstanding achievements in industry and innovation. Including the large factory in Cantoria, the company have 5,300 employees and export, with design showrooms and logistic centres, to 116 countries. In 2020 they sold products to the value of just over 1 billion euros. The King was accompanied by Yolanda Díaz, the Minister of Work and Economy, and the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno. On November 9th there was a “Design day” at the Spanish stand that is part of the ‘Expo Dubai’ event. The Cosentino products were on display, and architects and designers were invited to inspect the worktop materials if they were not already familiar with the products. Personalities that help promote their products were present at the event, including Lena Marcuccilli, director of “Love that Design”. The

‘El Gordo’ 2021 Every year there is a very major lottery drawn on December 22nd known as ‘El Gordo’ (The fat one). The price of a ‘decimo’ (one from a sheet of ten tickets with the same number) costs 20 euros from a lottery office, or 23 euros for tickets sold by an association, who fund-raise from the additional 3 euros. Each ticket has five numbers, and the first prize, that is the same as last year, is 4 million euros if a person or persons have clubbed together to buy a sheet of ten tickets, or 400,000 for each single decimo ticket. The Spanish tax man collects 20% of all winnings from lotteries after the first 2,500 euros which is tax free. Because of this, the 400,000 euros prizes are reduced to 318,000 euros! There are 172 different series with 100,000 numbers that brings in 3.4 billion euros if all of them are sold, and 70% of this total is distributed in prizes that works out as 2.4 billion euros. At the ‘Teatro Real’ theatre in Madrid, children from a nearby school sing out the numbers as they are drawn, and the corresponding prize amount, if there is one. The first ‘El Gordo’ lottery took place in 1870.

In the News Big Improvements in Employment Figures October was a month when it was very clear that the Spanish economy was improving. 159,500 people joined the 19.6 million people in work, which is a record number. 734 people were no longer unemployed, that does not seem a large number but it is historic because unemployment always increases in October. This October is a record month since 1975, some 46 years ago! The total number of unemployed persons subsequently dropped to 3.3 million with a steady fall of 80,000 since March. 102,000 persons found work and started paying into the Social Security system, and this was double the number for October in 2019 and 2020. People who had been in the ‘ERTE’ scheme because they had no work or only parttime work, and had 70% of their wages paid by the government, also fell by 48,000 down to 190,000, but in April 2020 3.5 million people were claiming this benefit. It was anticipated that in November more people would come off the scheme because they were once again fully employed. The success of the COVID-19 vaccination push in Spain is seen as partly responsible for the good figures, with the general population and businesses considering that Spain has turned the corner.

becomes compulsory, of a type approved for cyclists. Where the devices can be used will be stipulated by each municipality, but it is intended that they are only allowed in urban areas. If there are designated cycleways they have to be used, and in Seville the maximum speed where there are cyclists is 15km/h. They are not allowed to be used on pavements, nor roads, except where a town hall has approved their use on roads because there are no cycleways. Riders have to observe traffic signs, such as stopping at red traffic lights, not use headphones or mobile phones and are subject to the same limits for alcohol and drugs. If crossing a zebra crossing the user has to dismount or face a 200 euros fine. It is not at present a compulsory requirement throughout Spain that a user has to have third-party insurance for damage or injury although this is recommended, and is compulsory in Madrid. General advice is that a person should ask the provider of home insurance if they are covered under their policy. Riders can be fined 100 euros for an infraction that is considered minor, 200 euros for a more serious offence, and 500 euros for a very serious offence. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs has the same penalties that apply to all drivers.

Electric Scooters or Similar Devices Last month we explained how the latest regulations from the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) were in the process of being put into law by the Spanish Senate. Some further information has been published with regard to electric scooters and other personal battery-powered transport devices that can only be used by one person (but not mobility scooters), who is over the age of 15 or 16 according to local regulations. The definition of these devices is that they travel at a speed of between 6-25km/h and town halls are entitled to see the certificate that the manufacturer supplies showing that they comply with the maximum speed. Town halls can also stipulate that a user has to be registered with them, if they decide to do this. From January 2nd, the use of helmets

For Spain, this means it will be short of about 4 billion m3 even after the increased amount coming to Almería. The alternative to having natural gas coming from a pipeline is to turn the gas into liquid form and put it on special tanker ships that unload at a refinery where the liquid gas is converted back to normal gas. This is expensive both for conversion costs and shipping costs that have gone up dramatically. Algeria is prepared to supply the liquid gas but an alternative solution is to increase the 10% of liquid gas that Spain imports from both the US and Russia. The Spanish gas company Enagás states that they are increasing their reserves of gas and in early November had sufficient gas for 40 days, although the prices they are paying (passed on to consumers) are high. They state that from November to March they have 160 “slots” when tankers will discharge their liquid gas at Spanish refineries, compared to 86 in all of 2020 when the pandemic reduced the demand. There is a refinery at Cartagena that converts the liquid gas to normal gas. 4% of natural gas comes in a pipeline from France and the authorities in Spain are asking France if this percentage can be increased. It has been stressed that there is no danger of Spain running out of electricity or gas in the foreseeable future although prices are likely to remain high until 2022. The OCU state that an alternative to these special policies is to keep money in a bank for this purpose, or take out life insurance that will cover expenses following a death. The figures show that in Andalucía, 78% of the population in Cádiz have funeral insurance, 65% in Huelva and 63% in Seville. Numbers for Almería province were not given but in Melilla the percentage is the lowest at only 16%.

Since June 2020 the company have shipped 63 blades, mostly to Germany, but with some for the UK, Austria and Rhode Island in the US. In 2022, they anticipate that they may ship up to 121 blades of the maximum length of 61m, but in March 2023 they will begin production of blades from 75-83m, that will be produced in a special extension to their factory. To improve problems of transport, the company want to modify the access to the A-92 motorway from their factory, and also from the A-7 motorway to Almería port. The port authority has announced that they will pay for a feasibility study and the projected cost. This company is the third largest producer of turbine blades world-wide. After University Going to university and obtaining a degree hopefully means that these people obtain a job that is related to their degree, along with a good salary. Unfortunately, in the current economic crisis this is no longer true. A survey of recent graduates in Andalucia, what jobs they do and their salary, has revealed that 24% of these people are paid less than 1,000 euros a month. This is a high percentage compared to Madrid where only 12% receive such a low wage. 32% receive a salary of less than 1,500 euros a month, and this is about the same in many parts of Spain. 27% are paid up to 1,999 euros and 17% over 2,000 euros. This is also a low percentage compared to other parts of Spain, but not one of the worst. In Andalucía 18% have part time jobs and 34% have temporary contracts. Andalucía is third in the list of universities with the highest number of students who are not native Spaniards and this totals 10%,

with 7% coming from other EU countries. Almería University specialises in engineering and science courses, followed by architecture and health science. Increased Electricity Subsidies for the Needy For consumers of electricity in Spain, the rate of IVA (VAT) has been dropped from 21% to 10%, the “duty” on electricity has been cut from 5% to 0.5% and the 7% generation tax that supply companies pay to the government has been suspended. All these moves are designed to reduce the cost of electricity and for the 11 million clients who pay on the variable rate system (PVPC) there has been a dramatic rise in cost. For the 1.2 million people or households that have a low income and pay via the PVPC variable rate there has been a “bono social” subsidy of 25% off the bills that is being increased to 60%, and from 40% to 70% for the very low income or very vulnerable sector. There has also been a one-off 35 euros winter allowance for heating, and this winter it will be increased to 90 euros. Additionally, supply companies are prohibited from cutting off the supply to this sector of the population until next March. In Spain there is an annual amount of income (IPREM) that is considered to be the threshold for financial help and subsidies. In 2021 it is 7,900 euros, and the “bono social” is based on the IPREM amount of income. For a single person they are entitled to qualify for the subsidies if their income is less than 1.5 times the IPREM amount, less than 2 times for a family with one child and less than 2.5 times for a family with 2 children. An additional 5% of allowable income applies to a single parent with a minimum of at least one dependent child, pensioners on a low income, persons with a 33% or more disability, or a victim of violence or terrorism. A condition of the subsidies is that an annual income from another source cannot be more than 500 euros. Persons who qualify for these subsidies can apply to their electricity supplier who will send them an application form, and details are on the reverse side of an electricity bill.

An Unfair Tax Drastically Amended

n October 26th the Spanish High Court ruled that the way a town hall tax was calculated when an urban property changed hands was divorced from reality, and void. It was ruled that there had to be a new fairer basis for calculations. This tax that an urban property seller, recipient of a gift of the property, or an inheritor has to pay, is known as the ‘Plusvalía’ (literally added value) from the date of purchase and the date of acquisition by the new owner. There is a unique ‘catastral’ reference number for every plot of land that is shown on an ‘escritura’ (title deed), and shown on the annual town hall rates demand known as ‘IBI’. The rates demand has a monetary value, ‘valor catastral’, that is part construction and part land (suelo) and every year town halls increase it. The problem has been the way the town halls work out the tax due on the increase in the land value, which has nothing to do with the purchase and sale price. In 2019, the total amount of plusvalía tax in Spain was 2.5 billion euros, a very large source of income for the 8,000 town halls. On the old unfair system, town halls calculated the plusvalía amount based on the percentage increase in the catastral value of the land that they arbitrarily increase by 3% or more every year, so up to 60% after 20 years. As an example, if a property had a catastral land value of 150,000 euros when purchased in 2010 and it was then sold in 2021, a town hall may calculate that the increase in the value of the land over the 11 years is 35%, so an extra 52,800 euros. A town hall cannot charge a seller more than 30% of this figure, so the plusvalía is 15.840 euros, but not related to the selling price. With the amended system, the increase in the land value is dramatically less but there is a premium if a property owner buys and sells a property quickly, and might be a speculator. It is 10% if a property is bought and sold between 813 years, 12% if sold 15 years after a purchase,

17% after 20 years, and a maximum of 45% for more than 20 years. Additionally, a seller can now choose between two ways of calculating the tax due. They can pay the tax on the new sliding scale, or a person can pay the tax based on the difference between the actual purchase price and the selling price. As town halls cannot charge more than 30% plusvalía, it may well be cheaper to pay the 30%.

In 2017, the High Court ruled that the plusvalía could not be charged if a property was sold at a loss, as frequently happened from properties purchased from 2008-2011 and later sold for less money. In 2019 it was ruled that the plusvalía could not be more than any profit made on the sale, as this was entirely unfair. In the present property market, cancelling the entire system is very sensible. At present, it does not appear that sellers can claim a rebate from their town hall, which would have to be for a sale in the last four years. What did happen was that the old system was scrapped on October 26th and the new system came into force on November 10th. Between these dates sellers were exempt from paying anything, and some sellers tried really hard to bring their sale date forward!

Charlie Chaplin Charlie Chaplin died after a stroke on Christmas Day in 1977, aged 88, at his home in Corsier-sur-Vevey in Switzerland. Born in London into extreme poverty his mother was a struggling actress, but aged fourteen, Charlie was given his first acting role in the music halls. In 1910 he sailed to America as part of the Fred Karno troupe along with another performer, Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy fame). In 1913 he was involved in making silent movies at the Keystone Studios, but he wasn't convinced that there was any future in the film industry. In 1915, for his film “The Tramp”, he first wore his signature large baggy trousers, a tight jacket, a bowler hat and cane and had a small moustache to make himself look older.

Sir Isaac Newton On Christmas Day in 1642 Isaac Newton was born and became the very famous physicist and mathematician. In 1660 he invented calculus and made discoveries in the field of optical white light. There is no proof that an apple actually fell onto his head, but he became intensely interested as to why apples fell straight down, rather than falling sideways. This problem became the key to him developing his findings on universal gravity and the laws of motion, and explain why this applied to all sizes of objects. He expanded his laws of motion to explain the relationship of the earth, the moon and the sun, linked through gravity. His very important contributions to understanding the world as it was, cannot be overstated.

Founding the Internet In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee came up with the idea of the World Wide Web which became the internetbased system for sharing information globally. He was working in Switzerland at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, as a software consultant. On Christmas Day 1990 he tested his new invention for linking computers and sent the equivalent of the first webpage, on the first web server using the first web browser, available to CERN employees. He wanted there to be a “web” of information that anyone could access, not just a message system. In 1993 he invented the first version of HTTP and HTML, the publishing language. HTML 4.01 became the official standard in 1999 that was used from 2000 onwards.

The Soviet Union The Soviet Union was formed in 1922 and became the most important country along with the US for the majority of the 20th century. At times, war seemed inevitable, particularly during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 when President Kennedy eventually forced Nikita Khrushchev to back down and dismantle the missiles, while everybody held their breath. The ill-fated “Bay of Pigs” invasion of Cuba by US forces had led Khrushchev to persuade Fidel Castro to let Russia set up a missile base there. Eventually, with the alliance between the very different parts of Russia falling apart, the last USSR President, Mikhail Gorbachev, resigned on Christmas Day 1991. The Soviet Union was officially dissolved on Boxing Day.

In the Trenches WWI was a bloody and miserable war. Modern weaponry with heavy shelling and shambolic leadership seemed certain to result in death amongst the mud in the trenches. On Christmas Day 1914 there was a tentative waving of white flags, and British, French and German troops abandoned their trenches and met in no-man's land. Some of them exchanged rations as gifts, there was the singing of Christmas carols, and although historians aren't convinced it was true, there were stories of a football match. There are worries that people meeting up over the Christmas period may cause a spike in numbers, and if a new variant emerges this could cause problems. In other parts of Europe, restrictions are in force, in some cases comprehensive ones. In midNovember in Germany, numbers of new infections per day went over 65,000, more than the 3540,000 in the UK. In the Low Countries social distancing was reintroduced, and bars and restaurants had to close by 8pm, with a 6pm closing time for non-essential shops. In Austria, people not vaccinated were confined to their homes and with 800km of borders, people entering had to quarantine. In Rumania with only 35% of the population fully vaccinated, there was a curfew from 8pm-5pm for non-vaccinated people and they could not enter non-essential establishments such as shops, bars and restaurants. Thankfully, all these types of restrictions are lifted in Spain. Unfortunately, as in other European countries, inflation in Spain at the end of October was 5.4%, the highest for 29 years. At the end of October, compared to October 2020, electricity had gone up by 62%, diesel 30.5% and petrol 26.5 %. There has been a reduction in taxes on the price of electricity, and if these had not been put in place, the overall inflation would have been 6.2%. At present there are no concrete proposals for the

Last September, Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, promised that by the end of 2021 the cost of electricity would be down to the level in 2018, plus inflation. He will need a very large hat, to pull out a very large rabbit, to keep this promise. The cost of butane and propane gas has gone up by 33%, and natural gas for dwellings has gone up by 11%. The rise in fuel and electricity prices has led to a 7% increase in a reference “basket of products” that we all buy, and Spanish lorry drivers are planning a three-day strike immediately before Christmas. It is not much consolation, but the average inflation throughout Europe is 4.1% and 6.2% in the US. Some prices have fallen in Spain such as wine and liquor by 2.2%, frozen vegetables by 2.3% and nuts and dried fruit by 2.4%. International flight costs have fallen by an average of 2.2% and internal flights within Spain by 3.5%. These price reductions help the inflation figures, but do not help the majority of consumers. Hopefully, as we move into 2022, inflation will come down. The COVID19 pandemic will not disappear, but ideally it will be fully controlled in Spain, with life almost back to normal.

Swapped at Birth

19 year old Spanish woman, who prefers to remain anonymous, is claiming 3 million euros in damages from the health authorities in the La Rioja region of Spain, regarding a former hospital in Logroño, the capital city. In 2017, when she was aged 15, DNA tests revealed that she had no biological link to her supposed father or mother, and she had apparently been given to this couple after an error in the hospital maternity ward in 2002.

Almeriense Firefighting and Rescue Consortium have been decorated with the Andalucía Local Thanks to the Almería Provincial Council and the Police Order of Merit Cross with Green Emblem 13 municipalities which make up the Levante category, the only representatives of the fire- Almeriense Region, the Levante Almeriense fighting department in the whole of Andalucía, Firefighting and Rescue Consortium was in a ceremony held on November 15th in Almería constituted in April 2007. From the seven firemen that started out in 2007, today there is a team city. of 49 firefighters and three fire stations: one in The three decorated firefighters are Federico Turre, one in Huércal-Overa and another in Albox. These three firefighters, in risky manoeuvres, did not stop until she was rescued. Soon the train stopped and the mother heard her son say, "All passengers who are disembarking from the train, please remember to take all of your belongings with you. We thank you for riding with us today and hope your trip was a pleasant one. We hope you will ride with us again soon." She hears the little boy continue, "For those of you just boarding, we ask you to stow all of your hand luggage under your seat. Remember, there is no smoking on the train. We hope you will have a pleasant and relaxing journey with us today." As the mother began to smile, the child added, "For those of you who are pissed off about the TWO-HOUR delay, please moan at the nasty old bitch in the kitchen."

Recently I had a little too much "fun" at the office Christmas party. Knowing the police were on special alert, I did what they say you should do - I took a taxi home. This proved to be a wise decision, because after only a few blocks there was a police roadblock. They were checking all the drivers with a breathalyser. But the taxi, being a taxi, was waved on through. It was obviously a good decision to take a taxi. Plus, it was easier than I thought, and good fun driving it. It’s really just like any other car. But now, I have this taxi in my garage and I don’t know what to do with it.

The Origin of Christmas A mother was Christmas shopping at the mall with her three toddlers in tow. All day long they had been pestering her to buy everything in the store. They’d been running around like maniacs, touching everything, even knocking over displays. Then they wanted to go see Santa again.Finally, she was at her wits end. She crammed herself, all her shopping bags, and the toddlers into a crowded lift to get back to her car. As the doors closed, she said out loud, “Whoever started this whole Christmas thing should be strung up.” From somewhere behind her she heard, “I do believe they already crucified him.”

Room at the Inn The Sunday school kids had been rehearsing their Christmas play for weeks. Finally, they were ready for the big Christmas Eve show. The church was filled, and the play was going perfectly, right up to the scene where the innkeeper tells Joseph and Mary there is no room. Mary turned to Joseph and said, “I TOLD you to make reservations!”

...and next... The Newly-weds Confessions A couple that had only just met decide to get married on Christmas Eve. In their hotel room later that evening, the groom says, "Honey, I have a confession to make! I'm a golf nut. You'll never see me on weekends during the golf season." "Well, dear," she murmured. The Performing Fly A man is in jail for a year, so to pass the time he catches a fly and teaches it tricks. He gets it to lie on its back and play dead, jump into a matchbox and walk a little thread like a tightrope. He spends all his time doing this. He was released on Christmas Eve, so on Christmas Day he goes to the pub. When he has his beer, he opens the matchbox and lets the fly out. As the fly patiently sits there he sets up the tightrope and calls the bartender over. He says, “Hey bartender! Look at this!” The bartender says, “Sorry mate, just a minute” and goes to the bar, comes back with his fly squat and squishes the fly.

The Aliens Two aliens in a UFO are zooming through earth’s atmosphere to see what they could discover with a view to taking over the earth. Suddenly, they’re surprised by a flying sleigh carrying a large human in a red suit. The sleigh is moving at near hyper-speed and it’s powered by eight hoofed animals with large antennae coming out of their heads. One alien exclaims to the other, “No way we can invade this planet. Their technology’s too advanced.”

The Locket Sally shows her friend Meg a really nice locket that her husband had bought her for Christmas. Meg asks what she is thinking of putting inside it, and Sally replied, “I’ve already put a lock of my husband’s hair inside it.” Meg was surprised and said to Sally, “But Larry is still alive!” Sally said, “I know, but he has hasn’t got much hair left!”

The Ideal Christmas A nice meal for the family. Everybody sharing the dinner duties. Carol singers and a family trip to church for the evening service. Excited kids opening one present at midnight. Stockings hung by the chimney with care. Decorations glowing indoors and out. Snow softly falling all night..... And me on a beach in the Bahamas with a Corona.
