A Series of Anniversaries

O

n October 26th last year the Spanish parliament was dissolved for the General Elections in December that, because of a deadlock, were repeated in June but the situation is unchanged. New elections may be called for this December. The lack of a government in Spain except in function from last October is now getting really serious. 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the last film “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” in the Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western trilogy made here. It was mostly filmed at Tabernas where the film sets are now 'Oasys Mini-Hollywood'. The 6th Western Film Festival takes place in Tabernas from October 6th-9th and we list the activities in our “What's On” section. We also explain why Sergio Leone chose Almería and Clint Eastwood when making the first film, in an article. Another 50th anniversary is the composing of “Strawberry Fields Forever” by John Lennon when he was in Almería for the film “How I Won the War” for six weeks. He also obtained his famous “granny” glasses whilst he was here. La Casa del Cine in Almería city is in the restored cortijo built in 1866, so is 150 years old this year, where John Lennon stayed. It features a reconstruction of the bedroom from 1966 and apart from John Lennon mementos has various rooms celebrating other film actors and filming in the province. The Teatro Cervantes in Almería city has three evenings of music and homage acts relating to The Beatles with performers and groups from all over Spain on October 7th-9th. We have more details of the concert times and prices in our “What's On” section.

banks has still not been done and the extremely expensive desalination plant in Cuevas that was badly damaged has not reopened. When the Spanish Queen Sofia came to the area following the floods she recollected that this was her second visit after disastrous flooding and said she hoped she would never have to come here again. Regrettably there are no cast iron reasons why this would never take place. In September 2014 there was a major panic again when residents were asked to take their vehicles to higher parts of Garrucha but fortunately it was mostly a false alarm.

La Casa del Cine

Wednesday, October 12th is a major national fiesta that used to be partly to celebrate 'Christopher Columbus Day' but then changed to 'Hispanic Day' and it is also the religious fiesta of 'Nuestra Señora del Pilar' (Mary, virgin of the pillar) patron saint of the Guardia Civil police. October 31st is of course “Hallowe'en Night” and for Christians the eve of “All Saint's Day” on November 1st, a Monday this year. Cemeteries are spruced up with an abundance of flowers and candles are lit to remember friends and family members who have died and it is another national fiesta day. November 2nd is “All Souls Day” to remember and pray for all of the dead but is a normal working day.

The other anniversary that no-one wants to celebrate is the 4th anniversary of the horrendous floods particularly in Pueblo Laguna and Puerto Rey on September 28th, 2012. Apart from monumental damage to properties, four people lost their lives. Disgracefully, there are still consequent problems that have never been resolved including the complete lack of any sewage facilities in Antas when British Summer Time (BST) changes to Greenwich their treatment plant was destroyed. Promised Mean Time (GMT) on October 30th when clocks go work to dredge the Rio Antas and reinforce the back one hour but in Spain at 3am.

Focus on Local News No Change in Wages Figures from April to June show that wages have not risen in the last four years and still stand at an average at 1,638 Euros per month. March 2012 was a bad year owing to the recession when the average monthly wage was 1,633 Euros. There is a large difference depending on where a person lives in Spain. In Madrid, the average is 1,900 Euros but in Extremadura on the border with Portugal the average is 1,300 Euros. In Andalucía, which includes Almería province, monthly wages are below the average at 1,480 Euros and in Murcia the amount is slightly reduced at 1,460 Euros. Not Yet Legal Registration for holiday homes that came into force last May in Andalucía (so including Almería province) is not being done in hundreds of cases, although the fine can in theory be up to 150,000 Euros “in very serious cases”. The authorities are trawling through websites offering a stay in a holiday home and say that probably only 2% of properties have submitted the paperwork and received authorization in Almería province. They have identified 850 properties for rent on just one website that do not show the required code. Any property advertised has to include the reference number that starts with “VTF” that signifies it is a property let for financial gain. This is followed by the area reference so “AL” for Almería or “GR” for Granada. There is then a number that is unique to the property and owner, making up a total of 10 letters or numbers. A property in Almería province will be referred to as “VTF/AL/ 00000” (the number). This has to be shown on websites or any advertisement, booking forms, and paperwork confirming the letting. They state that 771 applications for registration in the province have been submitted up to September 1st. 298 have been processed and 250 already have their code number. They are proposing to notify websites that they can only list properties that have registered and have to include the number. Web portals are claiming it is not their responsibility, but the authorities

say it is. Fines of 30,000 Euros have been made to each of two websites by the authorities in Barcelona who have a similar registration system. In Almería province there have not yet been any fines handed out to the owners of holiday homes that have not registered but they are compiling lists from the internet. Ultimately there will be inspectors who will visit the accommodation. Owners who have registered where the property does not currently meet all the requirements have a grace period of up to May 11th , 2017, to comply.

The 6th Western Film Festival This event on October 6th-9th in Tabernas is increasing in popularity and status. Five major Western films and others from eight different countries will be shown that cover traditional Western-type genre and modern equivalents. The festival director for 2016 is Juan Francisco Viruega who is an experienced film maker. There are concourses regarding western films made in Andalucía and internationally where a jury will award prizes. Members of the public can also vote to choose the best film shown. The festival takes place at Tabernas itself, and the film areas of Oasys-Mini-Hollywood, and Fort Bravo. See “What's on” section for details.

Focus on Local News No School Bus Two children aged 16 & 13 cannot start their 2016/17 school year in Albox because the bus route has been changed and no longer comes to outside their house in Los Baltasares. They have been pupils at the Martín García Ramos for a number of years. Ana López, their mother, was astounded to learn that the bus route had been changed and the nearest stop is now two kms away on a poor road without street lights or pavements, and since they were small children there has been no problems. After contacting various authorities a solution was proposed that meant they had to change to another school that was closer but still involved a walk to the nearest pick-up point. Enquiries by the mother resulted in her being told that her sixteen year old son could have a place but not her thirteen year old daughter. Faced with this the students are staying at home and the mother is very concerned. Both children are stated to study hard and always receive excellent reports at the end of term times and want to go back to school. The Wrong Month A 74 year old woman died at the end of August at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería. She had signed up in 2010 that her body was to be donated to medical science, as other family relatives and her mother had done. In this case and regarding other people who die in Almería province with the same wishes this means the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Granada. After the hospital had been shown the paperwork relatives tried to get in touch with the university but nobody answered the phone as the department was on holiday. The hospital was unable to say what should happen next, but after two days suggested a normal burial. As this was quite contrary to the wishes of the dead woman the relatives didn't want to do this. The hospital then got in touch on their behalf with the faculties of medicine at Málaga and Murcia. In Málaga the authorities said that if the body was taken there at the expense of the relatives they would consider taking it, but

if not it would be returned to Torrecárdenas! The family then contacted the appropriate funeral company in Granada who said that transferring a body to the university was not possible in August. Knowing that this problem had to be dealt with very quickly they contacted the Spanish National Association for Donations of Bodies to Science who told the family that the body could be kept in the hospital mortuary for 72 hours without any problem. A local newspaper got involved and eventually were able to contact the person at Granada University who was in charge of arrangements there. He stated that there were conditions that applied to fiesta days and August but they greatly valued people such as the dead woman who were prepared to donate their bodies, and the funeral company in Granada then collected the body. The man at Granada who came in whilst he was on holiday said that the protocol was being changed and whenever a person died in these circumstances there would be someone on standby with a contact number. Donald Trump 375 scientist including Stephen Hawkins, 30 Nobel Prize recipients, and the Spanish biologist Francisco Ayala, have signed an open letter to Donald Trump emphasizing the importance of combating climate change. On various occasions he has said that climate change fears are a fraud and he may well take the US out of the Paris agreement recently ratified by Barack Obama and the Chinese President Xi Jinping to combat climate change if he becomes President. The scientists point out that 190 countries are now working to alleviate the problem that is “real” and cannot be ignored. Plastic Banknotes At present there are no plans to introduce “plastic” bank notes within the Eurozone including Spain. New notes being issued are designed to improve security and thwart forgers, but are still basically a paper composition. The UK has just announced the change to the new notes which are almost indestructible. These have been in use in Canada

Scientists say that the new notes are much more hygienic and existing paper notes often carry bacteria from urine, excrement, and drugs such as cocaine, particularly in France and Spain. A woman in Canada claimed that money belonging to her son had been put in a tin, the tin had been put on top of a log burning stove and the notes had melted! This was aired in the press, but the Canadian authorities said it was not true. They pointed out that tests had proved the notes were almost impossible to destroy and capable of being heated without any problem to a very high temperature.

Boat People Rescued The Spanish sea detection system 'SIVE' can find and keep track of any marine activity involving boats however small. A small inflatable craft was recently detected on September 21st and the authorities alerted the Guardia Civil Marine authority that it was in the area opposite Mojácar. The people were found about two nautical miles from Mojácar and eleven persons including a child were rescued and transported to a reception centre at the Almería port. He thinks that the criticism was distorted and there is no reason why premises of about 60 m2 should not open. He points out that other facilities very similar can be found at other areas in Andalucía where there are protected areas of natural beauty. He also points out that companies who offer tourist attractions in the area have grown from 39 to more than 60 in the last two years. Another contract was for an inventory of palm trees in Roquetas that was done using GPS positioning that opposition councillors complained was completely unnecessary. The national newspaper 'El País' has been regularly reporting on complaints and possible favouritism. Gabriel Amat says that he is being targeted owing to political persecution by opposition parties and he is entirely innocent. 20% Chose September One of the on-line companies dealing with holiday bookings states that an increasingly large number of Spanish Nationals (if they had the option) delayed their holidays until September. In a survey, 61% had postponed their holidays to avoid the large numbers in July and August and 43% said it was cheaper. 39% were young people who were still on holiday from universities and colleges. The web company said that 47% of September holidaymakers were prepared to go to various destinations at the last minute if the offers were good. Most men preferred to book holidays in European capitals rather than other countries outside Europe, but women still wanted a sun and beach holiday or were prepared to travel to nonEuropean countries. The web company have offers entitled “reserve today, travel tomorrow” and this is very popular as well. Albox Paperwork The ex-mayoress of Albox, Sonia Cerdán, who had to stand down is now councillor for urbanization, and Maura Hillen the President of 'AUAN', the “illegal houses” pressure group, is also a councillor. Sonia Cerdán has announced that documents have been signed that make Albox the first town in Andalucía to regularise ten developments where land had been divided into building plots that was not legal. The recent amendments to the law in July by the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) has enabled this to be done and these properties are now legalized for

the supply of water and electricity if there is no connection at present. This is stated to affect 350 families whose properties were classified as illegal in some cases dating back ten years.

“El Algarrobico” The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) was due to have more talks with central government towards the end of September to thrash out who pays for the demolition and following landscaping for the 411 room hotel on 21 levels at Carboneras. Building was suspended in 2003 although it was very close to being finished. The Junta are saying that they have to pay too much of the costs. Another meeting was scheduled for the end of October. Any court cases still to be heard by the Andalucían High Court have been put on hold until the Spanish High Court rule on cases they are hearing. A big question is whether the developers are paid the 70 million Euros they are asking for in compensation. “Ninis” The Spanish nickname “ninis” is the name given to young people who are neither in educational establishments nor in work. The World Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development collate details in a large number of countries. In Spain 23% of young people between the ages of 15-29 are “ninis” and only Turkey, Greece, and Italy, have a higher percentage. In the UK it is 14%, in France 18%, Germany 9%, the US 15%, Luxembourg 8%, and the EU average is 15%. The percentage

Focus on Local News in Spain has come down 3% in the last four years but was only 15% ten years ago. The world organization state that money spent on education including training for work in Spain is only 4% of GDP (Gross National Product) and was 9% in 2008. The other problem is that the number of companies or self-employed persons who say they are looking for workers is very low. 94% of companies state that they do not need more employees and 4% say that if they did they cannot afford it. An amount of 2,600 Euros per month is given as the cost of employing a person including Social Security payments. A Possible Treatment Against Leukaemia? Spanish scientists are working with others in the US and are tentatively hoping that a new treatment for childhood Leukaemia is viable. Immune system cells are taken from a patient and genetically treated before being put back. So far five children in Barcelona have received their treated immune system cells and the disease appears to be in remission. The tests are being undertaken as part of a pilot scheme together with drug company 'Novartis'. No Driver! 109 rail passengers recently travelling on the line Alvia-Santander-Madrid in September arrived at the Osorno station with a delay caused by bad weather and some snow at 21.15hrs. It soon became clear that the train was not starting again and a person with a megaphone announced that there were technical problems. This was not correct as the driver had now reached the maximum hours he was allowed to drive a train so had gone off duty and there was no relief driver! Passengers were advised to stay on the train but then Guardia Civil police arrived and allowed them to get off. The station staff then ran out of official complaint forms. Buses finally arrived so the passengers could continue their journey at 23.00hrs that was the time the train should have reached Madrid. The union of Spanish train drivers stated that on various occasions in the journey the driver had

told the train company 'RENFE' that his maximum hours of driving were approaching quickly and another driver was necessary. The train company said that it was very sorry for the delay, but agreed that the driver was prohibited from continuing and if he had safety regulations would have been breached. Full refunds of the tickets price were made and a promise of an enquiry that would take place to find out exactly what had gone wrong. Passengers said the problem was very simple; there was no driver! Really Good Figures In August, Almería airport handled 117,000 passengers, 33% more than in 2015. This has been partly a result of the 50% rise in passengers from abroad. Numbers from the UK went up by 49% and from Belgium 30%. There was also a significant rise in passengers from Germany, Denmark, Holland, and Poland, and holiday makers coming from Portugal increased by 40%. Up to the end of August this year, total passenger numbers were 651,000 which is 34% more than the same period in 2015. A New Plan Banco Popular is undertaking several ways of reducing costs and debts including shutting branches and reducing staff by 3,000 employees. A possible merger with Banco Sabadell has fallen through as they decided the economic situation did not justify doing it. A big problem for Banco Popular (and other banks as well) is that they have a stock of properties amounting to 11 billion Euros. Their President, Ángel Ron, has suggested that 6 billion Euros worth of these properties could be put into a special company that would trade on the Spanish Stock Exchange. The idea is that investors might buy chunks of these properties as an investment if held long enough. The entity 'Sareb' was created during the financial crisis and all the “toxic” properties that banks held with debts that could never be recovered were transferred over and there has been some success in selling them on to institutions who take a long

Focus on Local News term view. An existing company with a 51% stake by the bank deal with sales of Banco Popular properties and an agreement would have to be reached with them. For the same reason that Banco Sabadell gave for not entering into a merger the present economic situation may not result in these plans being viable. In June, Banco Popular announced that it was increasing their capital by 2.5 billion Euros which caused some alarm and dividends for shareholders have been nil or almost nothing for a number of years. Ángel Ron hopes to be able to pay a decent dividend in 2018. After this announcement shares fell to only 1 Euros 12 céntimos. No Blame Ecologists in Action-Almerí have denounced the Spanish organization responsible for the residues of plutonium at Palomares following the nuclear accident 50 years ago, and also the Spanish Nuclear Organization. They accused them of disinterest and a lack of any activity. The Government Minister, Consuelo Madrigal, has stated that there is no justification on the part of the ecologists and in the last few years both departments have carried out many surveys and made proposals to try and find a solution. She stated that if there had been any lack of proper action years ago, any legal action was now time-barred. It is still hoped that the agreement signed by John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, last year when he came to Madrid will bear fruit and the contaminated soil that remains will be taken back to the US where it will be deposited at a facility in Nevada. It is accepted that at present Spain has no government and in the US there are the Presidential Elections so nothing is liable to happen at present. The EU Negotiator An ex-Prime Minister of Belgium, Guy Verhofstadt, has been nominated as the representative from the EU parliament to oversee the 'Brexit' withdrawal. He will join forces with Michel Barnier from the EU Commission. Theresa May, the UK Prime Minister, has had talks with Donald Trusk,

President of the Commission, that were termed “amicable”. The overall EU position is that ‘Brexit’ should take place earlier than planned in the interest of all parties. Having said this, the EU accept that they cannot impose a timetable.

Terence Hill Award The Italian actor and film-maker Terence Hill whose real name is Mario Girotti is being given a special award at the Tabernas Western film festival in early October. He sent a video to the organizers in 2014 saying how much he enjoyed making his first Western film in Tabernas in 1968 and he is making another film here this October. Each year persons who have had a major involvement in Western films are selected for an award. A Final Payout! The Spanish Ministry of Transport has been told by the High Court in Murcia that they have to pay the compensation for the compulsory purchase of land when the Vera-Cartegena toll road was built that is still outstanding. This comes to a total of about 130,000 Euros. The construction company 'Aucusta' have gone into liquidation but the court said this was not a reason why the compensation should not be paid. The court has also ruled that the landowners are entitled to interest payments from the time the land was taken away from them and the Ministry of Transport have to pay all the court costs.

Focus on Local News Some Improvements From September 12th, the revamped 'Talgo VI' trains that first came into service 20 years ago are available for two of the four daily train journeys between Almería-Madrid-Almería. These partly replace the antique 'Talgo V' ones that are about 40 years old. The trains have been given new upholstery, seat spacing, tables, a power point for each seat, and an improved cafeteria coach at the Talgo works in Toledo. Each train will permanently have space for 220 passengers. The afternoon Talgo train will leave Almería at 16.05 instead of 15.36 and will arrive in Madrid at the Atocha station at 22.19 and Chamartin at 22.33. This new timetabling will cut 23 minutes off the journey. From Madrid the train that arrives in Almería at 21.29 has had 7 minutes shaved off! Cynics are asking if 7 minutes is the best they can do, and how often will it be a reality? The train company say that a speed of 200kms/hr can be achieved but the same cynics ask over what part of the journey, and what about speed limits on the way that are 20km/hr or 30kr/hr? At present, the modified carriages have a wider access to the loo, but will not be fully wheel-chair friendly until next February. Nevertheless, the very long journey time should at least be more comfor table.

From June 15th-September 15th there were a total of 16 lifeguards and two roving teams from the civil protection service. The councillor for tourism, Alexis Pineda from Nijar council says that they are considering putting in place regulations next year that would enable fines to be given to people who ignore red flags, or dive into the water from rocks where it is too shallow, or other behaviour that is obviously not sensible and life-threatening. Cheaper Water for Greenhouses Subject to the granting of various permissions by the Junta de Andalucía, a geothermal plant will be built in Nijar that will be the first one in Spain for agriculturalists. The company involved will drill to a depth of 1,500 metres where there is a continual supply of hot water that has been discovered. This is considered sufficient to supply water to 3,000 hectares (nearly 12 sq miles) of green house growers. Conventional water heating can cost 70,000 Euros per hectare, and for the smaller grower is an expense they cannot cover. An installation using the geothermal water will cost 15,000 Euros and give a production of tomatoes totalling 25kgs per sq metre, instead of only 6-9 kgs without any heating. This will then be reflected in the prices that produce is sold for, increasing competitiveness.

A Bronze Medal Jairo Ruiz, aged 27, from Almería, was awarded the bronze medal in the “para- triathlon” event in Rio. He lacks a left arm below his elbow which was considered a reason why his swimming times would not be good. Mobil Phone Roaming The procedure and regulations regarding scrapping roaming charges between EU countries is set to come into place from June 15th, 2017, but initially it was to come in force in 2015, although many phone companies have already undertaken various changes. The “fine print” is still being worked out! One of the problems has been how long a mobile phone from Spain (for instance) can be used in the UK (for instance). If someone from Spain was working in the UK but still using their Spanish mobile number how long could this continue? The latest EU proposed regulation is that there will be a maximum of 90 days with no more than 30 days of continuous use. There is a built in escape clause that says companies could choose to make this period 100 or 120 days if they wished to do so. There is supposed to be a consultation period by interested parties up to December 15th but consumer organizations are furious and say that lobbying from phone companies is reducing the initial proposals. They claim that by making the date two years later than was planned phone companies have generated 6% of their annual income in the two year period from roaming charges. Another proposal is that if a Spanish person (for instance) who lives in Spain but travels to France or Portugal to work there every day they would not be surcharged. There is also a discussion as to the legality (with these regulations) of a person purchasing a very cheap charged up SIM card in countries with cheap tariffs. Ultimately, an EU council of ministers has to pass all the proposals. Within five days of announcing the 90 day period, Jean-Claude Junker, President of the

A Good Mark Up. The association that represents agricultural growers in Almería province is complaining bitterly about the amount of money growers receive from supermarkets and the selling price to the public. They say that in August the growers were paid 22 céntimos per kilo for melons and the average cost to the public was 1 Euros 43 céntimos, that is a mark up of more than 500%! Sandias were sold by the growers for an average of 15 céntimos per kilo and in supermarkets the price on average was 87 céntimos. Another example they quote is that growers of lettuce received about 19 céntimos and customers paid just under 1 Euro. They say that prices to the client for green or red peppers and salad tomatoes was 200% more than they received and the prices for potatoes are also claimed to be a mark up of 150%. The Old Almería Railway Station Last month we reported that the rail pressure group “Mesa del Tren” in Almería has been pushing for action to repair the old railway station and eventually put it into use for some purpose. It is considered of great importance as a building and part of the cultural heritage. Plans to have it listed as being of cultural importance were submitted on April 1st, 1985! Complaints have been made to the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) repeatedly. Central government have now stated that the listing and any work is their responsibility not the Junta and plans have got bogged down in the Spanish Ministry of Culture. A couple of months ago in response to the Mesa del Tren complaints, 'ADIF' the rail authority, said they would undertake some restoration work but not when! This has been a very long saga.

Focus on Local News Almería Province Road Deaths Figures for July and August are that 4 people died from road accidents, considerably less than the 26 people who died in 2000. There were 124 accidents and apart from the deaths there were 11 people seriously injured and 110 with slight injuries. The 2006 driver points system is considered to have had a large effect in reducing accidents apart from a much greater activity in campaigns by traffic police. In 3,800 alcohol teats only 80 drivers were over the limit in August but drivers showing a level of drugs in August amounted to 65% of those tested. This is considered a very worrying statistic. Tragically, on September 9th a very serious accident took place on the Almanzora motorway at Fines in the direction Baza/Granada. A 26yr old man was involved in a fatal frontal collision with another car with a family. Initial investigations concluded that the young man had possibly misread road signs or was confused. He and a 14 month old baby were thrown completely out of their vehicles and died. The young man lived in Cantoria and the family in Purchena. The 'DGT' traffic department classify this section of road as being one of the most dangerous in Almería province and regular speed checks take place. Last March two men died following another frontal collision in the same section. 'LED' Bulbs On September 1st, regulations from the EU prohibited the sales of halogen bulbs which now have to be replaced with the LED variety. These are a direct swap with the same location method as the halogen ones. Sales outlets are still able to sell halogen bulbs in stock but the authorities want everybody to substitute existing bulbs in the home as soon as possible. The problem with halogen bulbs is that a lot of the energy required is wasted in heat, not light. Using halogen bulbs on a hob to heat food has been a facility for many years. The new LED lights are not cheap and depending on the manufacture will cost from perhaps 6 to10 Euros. The more expensive ones have a life of 40,000 hours and the cheaper ones 25,000 and

reputable manufacturers give a lifetime guarantee. A five watt halogen bulb gives the same amount of light as a normal fifty watt bulb. Various types will be introduced to replace any normal light bulb including neon tubes. It is estimated that there are 34 million halogen bulbs in use in homes in Spain. Not Spain But... A 70yr old man in Kansas went into a small bank and gave an employee a note that he had a gun and wanted all the money amounting to 3,000 dollars that he was given. At this point he calmly waited for the police to arrive and greeted them quite amicably and handed over the money (he didn't have a gun). At the police station he explained that he and his wife had had a row and he was not prepared to put up with the situation any more. He had decided that being put in a prison cell was a better alternative. Whether a man aged 70 is sent to prison in the US depends greatly on the offence. A local newspaper found a picture of him and his wife taken last Christmas where they both looked extremely happy! Good Sales Last month we commented in an article on vehicle sales in Spain and the fact that the Spanish Government subsidies known as the 'PIVE' scheme had now finished as of the end of July. It was considered that the auto mobile industry and car dealers were now able to “go it alone”. This seems to have been the case as in August, without any subsidies, sales went up 15% and total sales were at the same level as sales in August in 2007. 64,000 vehicles were put on the road, and the total in 2016 up to the end of August was 800,000. Guarded predictions are that at the end of 2016 total sales will be 1.2 million. Sales to rental companies that were renewing their stock went up by 48%, and 16% to companies, with private purchases increasing by 13%. Volkswagen has been pushed into second place as regards total numbers following the emission scandals but they became market leaders again in August with 4,900 sales.

More Problems Where the 'AVE' (Spanish high speed train) will go through Cuevas there is a natural habitat where the Spanish species of tortoise, “testudo graeca”, live. The rail company 'ADIF' stated a long time ago that these tortoises that are a protected species would be moved to a new location where a reserve would be created. They proposed two sites where there was housing and active agriculture. The mayor of Cuevas complained and suggested a new site where there would be no problems as the

Focus on Local News agricultural areas were minimal and there were no dwellings. Almería university confirmed that this proposed site was very suitable. 'ADIF' then threw in the sponge and passed the problem to the Environmental Department of the Junta de Andalucía. At one stage, the Minster of Transport said that the delay in starting the work on the 12 kms stretch of railway was because of the tortoises. This is not true as no work can start in any respect until all the expropriations of the land needed has taken place so 'ADIF' then own the land. Right at the end of August, the residents of Los Lobos observed that 'ADIF' personnel were marking out areas with stakes and this was for the tortoise reserve. The area has some houses and active agriculture with 290 different land owners and they were soon up in arms. Serafín García, the mayor, is seeking urgent meetings with the rail authority. The land is still in the ownership of private people, and residents made “denuncias” (official complains) to the Guardia Civil police that this was trespass by the rail company without any permission! 'ADIF' then stated that the area being “suggested” for the tortoises would take into account all considerations regarding the owners of the land. Los Lobos residents then said if this was really the case why were stakes and markers being put in place? A Not Typical August Despite tourism being a large motor of the economy, in August in Almería province unemployment figures usually increase. This is partly due to seasonal variations in some industries and a decline in agricultural workers before the new season. This August, unemployment went down, but not by a large amount. Figures are that 167 people signed off the register with the total number down to 70,400 which is of course a large number of people. This slight decrease has not occurred since 2006 and in the last year there have been 9,400 persons who have found work and therefore made a reduction in unemployed totals. 135 people who came off the register in August were below the age of 25 and this is the

population sector where unemployment has been as high as 50% but there are still 5,900 young people without work although the number has gone down significantly over the last 12 months. During this period, 9,000 persons have started paying Social Security contributions after finding work, and total numbers throughout Spain need to increase dramatically to reduce the negative amount of people paying in and people receiving pensions. Unfortunately, throughout Spain, many people on temporary contracts lost their jobs on August 31st which totalled 282,000. The only good statistic is that on the same day last year, 333,000 became unemployed. Total unemployment in Spain has come down but the total is 3.7 million. There is no quick fix. New Births In the first six months of this year, there have been 3,233 births in the public health service hospitals in Almería province. This has resulted in 3,289 babies, an average of 18 per day. 621 births were by caesarean section and 2,000 mothers made use of epidural or other sedation methods. The Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería is where the majority of the births took place followed by the Poniente hospital in El Ejido. 491 mothers gave birth at the La Inmaculada hospital at HuércalOvera. All the hospitals offer a programme relating to births that can be chosen by the mother. Hospital staff promote a baby being breast fed naturally and a milk bank is in operation at the Torrecárdenas hospital. At Huércal-Overa, the facilities available to mothers are considered to be a reference for any other maternity facility in Spain and pioneers in new methods to provide a trouble free birth with maximum co-operation with the wishes of the mother. Almería city therefore qualify to apply for one of the grants. Boat People Traffickers On September 8th two small craft were spotted off the Almería coast near San José and found to contain forty-one would be immigrants from Algeria including ten minors. After they had been rescued and questioned it was established that they had all paid about 600 Euros for the journey. The five organizers who were on board and aged 18-20 had told the travellers that if they were intercepted or questioned several of them had to say they were in charge rather than the real culprits. The five men once identified were arrested and it was concluded that they were part of an organized gang who dealt in human trafficking. The men have been remanded in custody pending further investigations. Still Missing David Oldman, a 66 year old walker from Leicester, disappeared on June 9th and since then his whereabouts are still a complete mystery. He left Huércal-Overa to go to Albox and his next port of call was Baza but he was not seen in either of these places so is considered not to have reached either destination. This was part of a 1,400 mile walk in stages from Gibraltar House in London finishing in Gibraltar itself. He was going back to the UK for a brief period on June14th but did not take this flight home either. His family say that he was an experienced walker and had planned his walk in great detail. Spanish police mounted a large search using helicopters and dogs but they found nothing. The “Lucy Blackman Trust” is an

organization that helps UK families when a person has disappeared out of the UK or is suffering some crisis and they are working with Spanish police. As is normal in situations like these a number of people claim to have seen him, but these reports have all proved false. The British Embassy is also in contact with the Spanish police. The family have opened a facebook page “David is missing” with full details relating to him. His niece Gemma came to this area on September 10th which was three months since he had last been seen.

Focus on Local News parents who had already decided he would be given the name “Lobo” (Spanish for wolf). When they went to register the birth at the registry in Fuenlabrada (a district in Madrid) they were told that this name was not acceptable as it was offensive and might be prejudicial to the child in later life. They cited a regulation from 1957 that prohibited names that might be “confusing” On a subsequent visit, the parents were told the same thing and that if they didn't back down a court would choose a name as the time limit for registering a birth had passed! The parents said that “Wolf” was a common name in Germany, Brazil, and Scotland, and six children in Catalonia were named “Lobo”. Thousands of children in Spain are called “Paloma” (pigeon), León (lion), and “Delfín” (dolphin) so the parents asked what was wrong with “Lobo”? Apart from thi,s the Spanish Social Security offices had made no objection to this name. When this decision became generally known, 24,000 people on Change.org signed up as saying the court should not be able to decide a name, and 18,000 thought “Lobo” was fine and supported this name as being accepted. A thirteen year old boy in Barcelona called “Lobo” was interviewed by a Spanish TV company and said he liked the name and it caused him no problems. On August 3rd, the head of the Civil Registries in Spain told the parents that the Ministry of Justice had ruled that this name was acceptable and a complaint made against the Fuenlabrada registry by the parents had been upheld. The registration went ahead on August 24th. No “AVE” Progress April 2014 was seen as a decisive day in the saga of the “AVE” (High Speed Train) line which is supposed to link Murcia with Almería to form part of the “Mediterranean corridor” for goods and passengers. This was when workers built high walls at the entrance to the enormously expensive twin tunnels near Sorbas. The rail company stated this was just a safety precaution, but it was seen by local politicians and the Almería Chamber of Trade as a symbolic sign that no more work was in the pipeline. At the end of 2014 it was announced that

42

the project to build a 12km stretch from Pulpí (on the border of Almería province and Murcia) to Cuevas was “almost completed”. On August 28th 2015 it was announced that the work had been awarded to the company 'Sacyr' with a completion time of 24 months. Nothing has happened since! There is still some confusion as to whether it will be a single track with no possibility of twin tracks, or a single track laid on a track width that would allow for another track in the future. At present, no work can start because the expropriation of the land needed has not been completed. The other reason given for the delay is that until this is completed the tortoises that live on some of the land needed where there is a natural habitat cannot be moved to a new location! It has been suggested that things might happen “by the end of this year”. In theory, and no one has actually said it won't happen, there will be a station at Vera, the only one on the Murcia-Almería line apart from the cities. A company was given the job of designing the station and a contract to build it that cost a lot of money over four years ago. The project they came up with was adjudged too expensive, and no other concrete plans have been published since then. There are twenty-one sections of the line from Murcia-Almería and only seven have been built. When the 12km Pulpí-Cuevas section is finally built, there are no other sections either side that have been adjudicated. Another Court Case The ex-mayor of Cantoria, Pedro Llamas, is no stranger to court proceedings where he has been found guilty of various planning offences and barred from holding public office as a result. The four houses demolished in Cantoria all with UK expat owners are a good example. This time he is accused of awarding 925,000 Euros of contracts without any of the correct procedures being done. These took place between 2007 & 2010 and the prosecution allege that he was fully aware that this was illegal and the town hall secretary had pointed this out to him. A ban on holding any public office for ten years is being requested.

igures relating to property sales and prices show that the market is definitely improving. Prices generally in the 2nd quarter of 2016 are up 7.5% in comparison to 2015 and in the 1st quarter they went up 2.2%. These increases take the average amount being paid to the levels of 2004. Nevertheless, this is a reduction of 26% from the boom years before the property crash in 2008 and then the financial crisis. A person with a large mortgage is a long way from wiping out the debt if they sell up, or getting back the money they used from other sources. Between April and June there were 107,000 property sales throughout Spain which is up 24% and the best figures since the 1st quarter of 2011. In the last twelve months, up to the end of August, the properties changing hands amounts to 384,000 with 75,000 of these in AndalucĂa which includes AlmerĂa province. The high amount of sales and purchases in AndalucĂa in the 2nd quarter of this year with a 20,000 total is higher than Catalonia where sales were just over 17,000. Madrid recorded 15,000 sales, the same number as in Valencia, and the Canary Islands where property sales are usually buoyant only achieved a total of 5,000 sales and in Murcia sales were only about 4,000. In the 2nd quarter this year, 82% of the sales apply to second hand properties at a total of 88,000. Sales of new properties are increasing as well, but in terms of an increase in price the money changing hands has gone up by less than 1%. This is partly because banks are trying hard to offload their high stock of properties where the mortgage holder could not keep up payments or construction companies went bust often with discounts. Gurus in the EU are telling banks that they have to reduce their stock of properties that include housing, commercial premises, and land. The authors of the survey point out that these figures are encouraging, particularly relating to second hand properties, but they include a note of caution. This is because there is still no stable government in Spain, so confidence that the

recovery will continue is possibly reducing. The situation in the EU is also not considered totally beneficial to continued rises in prices. Looked at on an international level there is currently no reduction in sales by non-Spaniards, and these types of purchasers increased by 13% in both the 1st and 2nd quarters this year. This sector of market purchasers went up 14% in the last quarter of 2015, so there is not any substantial decline. Even with 'Brexit' on the cards and taking place, 20% of foreign purchasers were from the UK in the 2nd quarter this year, and only a very slight reduction from the 1st quarter.

D L SO Germans, French, Italians, Belgians, and buyers from Sweden all had a share of the market from 6%-7%, so UK purchasers are three times more but non-UK purchasers are similarly rising in numbers. The average amount of mortgages being taken out stands at 110,000 Euros and interest rates have of course fallen with the Euribor still at a negative interest rate. As we mentioned last month, many people taking on a mortgage are opting for the new type where the rate is fixed for the whole term. At present, these people are effectively paying over the odds, but the reassurance that the interest rate is not going to change until the mortgage is paid off is seen as a very worthwhile incentive.

So Now You Know... “Silly Putty” In the 1940s when America entered World War II they needed rubber for military truck tires, soldiers’ boots, and things like gas masks and life rafts. The Japanese had bombed large numbers of rubber producers in Asia and as they needed a substitute scientists were asked to come up with a replacement. James Wright who worked for 'General Electric' tried mixing boric acid with silicone oil and made a very pliable material. It wasn't a good substitute for rubber but an unemployed advertising executive decided it was ideal for children to play with. He bought the manufacturing rights and introduced it at Easter 1950 packed inside a plastic egg. It was then found it was ideal for picking up dirt, lint, and pet hairs.

Smoke Alarms The American company 'BRK Electronics' were the first company to develop battery or mains powered smoke alarms in 1969, initially for industry. Intense development resulted in a compact and reliable smoke alarm for domestic use powered mainly by batteries so they were easy to install. In 1974 the very large 'Sears Roebuck' company put them in their stores and sales boomed in a very short space in time. 'BRK' introduced an improved version trademarked “First alert” and their company became the brand leader. They went on to introduce other home safety products including rechargeable waterproof lights for use in gardens, along with domestic security lighting. They also patented a carbon monoxide detector.

Sports Bras Ancient Greek women who participated in sporting events wore a tight band of cloth to restrict the movement of their breasts. In many cities, women's sports were common, particularly in Sparta, and these bras were called “apodesmos”. Other women wore them under clothing without taking part in sport and this emphasized their breasts the same as a “Wonderbra” as they wore them a bit lower down. Another type of these bras were worn over clothing known as “strophions” and all the varieties were made of wool or linen that were usually tied or pinned at the back. Some statues of the goddess Aphrodite show her wearing a thinner apodesmo that may be because these types were considered erotic.

Croissants Although firmly rooted in people's mind as being a product coming from France, early croissants called “kipferi” were an Austrian invention from the 13th century. It was crescent shaped but denser than modern day ones and was served as a dessert. In 1839, an Austrian man Auguste Zang opened a Viennese bakery in Paris. He started making his own variety that was then a food item mainly associated with breakfast and was much lighter than the Austrian ones. French bakeries started copying the idea and it became customary for them to appear on the menu in hotels. Restaurants or coffee shops that opened early in the morning soon served them up as a standard item. As it was still crescent shape it was called “le croissant”.

Chain Saws The first chain saw was invented as early as 1830 with a very specific use. Bernhard Heine was a German surgeon specializing in orthopaedics. He wanted an easy device for cutting bones whilst carrying out operations. He made a series of sharp metal teeth set at an angle that he then fixed to a toothed chain that was manually operated by turning a handle and his invention was called the “osteotome”. There was a guiding blade to ensure accuracy. It was very successful and became a very popular and extremely useful device as a surgical instrument during the 19th century. In the 1920s it was realized that by adapting it to make it stronger and petrol driven it was ideal for felling trees in forests and was extremely portable.

Bubble Wrap Two America engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes were experimenting with producing textured wallpaper in 1957 and came up with the idea of trapping air inside various materials. This didn't seem to be a viable option that interior designers would choose to put on walls but they realized that a similar idea could be use for packing delicate items that were being shipped. They patented this in 1960 and formed the 'Sealed Air Corporation' with the trademark “Bubble Wrap” along with other variations that soon became a standard in the packaging industry. They never anticipated that their product would be used as a popular stress reliever and people would pop the bubbles to listen to the noise it made.

I

n 2015, some 161,000 visitors went to the Oasys Mini-Hollywood Spaghetti Western film location with three daily Western shows set against the backdrop of the same buildings constructed for the 1965 film entitled in Spanish “La Muerte Tenía un Precio” - “For a Few Dollars More”. This was the sequel to the 1964 film “Por un Puñado de Dólares” - “A Fistful of Dollars”, and was followed by the third film in the trilogy in 1966 “El Bueno, el Feo y el Malo” - “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” filmed here exactly fifty years ago.

much less compared to other places. Tabernas in the 1960s only had a population of 3,600 but it was near to Almería city for accommodation. Coming from Madrid airport involved a journey of almost ten hours on bad roads and in some cases little more than goat tracks, so Manuel Fraga, the Spanish Minister for Tourism, built the Almería airport that was opened in 1968. This was followed by hotels that until then were sparse.

These three films were the most important “Spaghetti Westerns” almost entirely filmed in Almería province by the Italian director Sergio Leone together with his childhood friend, Ennio Morricone, who wrote not only these film scores but the music for over 500 films and TV documentaries. The main actors were Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach, and Gian Maria Volonté, but they will always be remembered as featuring Clint Eastwood. From then on a total of 300 different European and American films, commercials, and videos, have been shot mostly in the same area. So why Almería? The first answer is the Tabernas desert area, the only desert in Europe that extends to 46 sq. miles with spectacular scenery, and the whole area encompassing Tabernas, Gádor, Santa Cruz, Alboloduy, and Gérgal is over 100 sq miles. So primarily it was location, location, location. The only inhabitants were lizards, rabbits, foxes, owls and eagles, and a few plants. With 3,000 hours of sunshine and almost no rain at all in winter and summer this was a big attraction, and the light was considered ideal. Filming if it rains at outside locations has to be abandoned adding more costs, and film sets are often damaged. The other good reason was that labour was very cheap as there was almost no tourist income and no agriculture under plastic. Hiring people in Spain to build sets and other trades and find extras was cheaper than Italy, Germany, and certainly the US, and Almería was one of the poorest areas in Spain. This was reflected in production costs that were

Clint Eastwood in a Fistful of Dollars

Clint Eastwood was an unknown actor who had not taken part in any large films and one of the reasons he was hired was because he was cheap! Sergio Leone only spoke Italian and French so he directed Clint Eastwood through an interpreter. His reputation rocketed within a very short time and his agent demanded and obtained 250,000 dollars for the last film. Clint Eastwood later recalled that when he was first offered the part in “For a Fistful of Dollars” he was unsure whether this was a good or a bad idea. Part of the reason he took the part was that he would be coming to Spain and Italy which he thought would be interesting. In only a short time other actors or actresses such as Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale, Franco Nero, Fernando Sancho, Brigitte Bardot, and Raquel Welch arrived here and Almería became firmly established as the “Land of film”.

Organ Transplants in Spain

A

s we mentioned last month, Spain is top of the list world-wide for the number of transplants that are carried out. This is only possible because the number of donors is very high. For every 1 million people in Spain there are 100 transplants, more than the 92 in the US, and 70 in the UK. Worldwide, the total figures still only make up 10% of the demand but this percentage is slowly improving. Throughout the EU, 56,000 people needed a transplant at the end of last year, but sadly 4,000 people died before this could be done. Figures are collated by the World Health Organization and 120,000 major transplant operations were made last year. 80,000 kidney transplants were carried out, 26,000 liver transplants, 6,500 heart transplants, 5,000 lung transplants, 2,300 pancreas transplants and 215 intestine transplants. This is a slight improvement on 2014 but is 10% more than in 2010. Many other organs or tissue can be transplanted and in Spain there were 4,800 organ removals in 2015. Figures for donors so far this year if they continue to grow at the same rate will be about 11% more than last year.

One of the reasons for increased organ transplant is where there is no electrical activity in the heart known as the asystole phase or “flatline” as shown on cardiac monitors, so no blood is being pumped and cardiac arrest occurs. Survival rates with the 28% of patients in this condition are much less than other causes of cardiac arrest. If the heart cannot be re-started for a period of over 15 minutes the lack of oxygen causes brain death. Following such a death, organs can be removed for transplants and this accounted for 17% of all donated organs in Spain last year. Previously there were less organs removed and consequent transplants in this situation. UK nationals are four times more likely to donate organs in Spain than in the UK because the procedure in Spain is much more efficient.

follows a certification by three medical doctors that they all agree that a brain death has taken place. Apart from heart attacks, patients may have died following a traffic accident, but donors from this category are going down because road deaths are decreasing. A brain haemorrhage is another cause and following the certification of a brain death a transplant co-ordinator will be notified and relatives will be asked for their consent to have organs removed. Kidneys can be kept for 36 hours, heart and lungs for 6 hours (so speed is essential), and corneas for 10 days. An organ removal only takes from 3-6 hours.

If a person decides they want to be a donor all they have to do is tell their relatives so they are aware of their wishes. Spanish donor cards are available by request from a health centre, hospital, or on-line. The only requirement is that a person gives their name and address. There is no central register of card holders and the card has no legal significance but it indicates that you would like to be a donor. A third way is making a “living will” at a health delegation. This is a legal document stating how you would like medical staff and relatives to act in various situations when you cannot make your own decisions. When asked about organ donations only 7% of relatives in 2015 said “no”.

There are no fixed age limits and excluding children under the age of fifteen, the average age in Spain The system for potential transplants in Spain in 2015 was sixty-one.

lectric cars are supposed to be the future of vast majority of sales in Spain are not to the motoring and a great contribution to reducing general public. contamination, apart from not relying on the production of petrol or diesel fuel. In Spain they are practically non-existent. Various cities in Europe are attempting to limit the movements of conventionally fuelled vehicles and in Paris vehicles manufactured before 1997 are already banned. Last month we explained the new system in Spain where all vehicles will be issued with a sticker eventually showing their “green rating” or lack of it. In Norway and Holland it has been decided that the sale of vehicles using conventional fuel and hybrids, where an electric motor is only in use some of the time, will be banned from 2025 and it is probable that other countries will bring in similar legislation. It is fully accepted that petrol and diesel vehicles contribute to contamination and environmental considerations and pressure for a “greener planet” will have a progressively negative effect on sales of conventional vehicles. In Norway they are offering large incentives for the general public to buy electric vehicles including a purchase discount, scrapping the 25% VAT rate, no charge on toll roads or for parking, and free travel on ferries. The state subsidises the total cost of charging the battery in public locations so a driver pays nothing. Because of these measures, sales of electric vehicles in Norway are now up to 17% of all sales that totalled 26,000 vehicles in 2015. Sales so far in 2016 have exceeded this number by 45%. In Spain, there were only 2,342 electric vehicles sold in 2015 although the “Plan Move” (very similar to the “PIVE” schemes for ordinary vehicles) gives a discount of 2,700-5000 Euros and then tax breaks for companies who buy electric vehicles. A self employed person can take advantage of another special scheme. This has helped the number of sales to reach 1,055 in the 1st quarter of 2016. Because of these special subsidies the

If a private motorist in Spain buys an electric vehicle, the supply company Endesa will come and carry out a home survey that in many cases means an upgrade. A charging unit that is not cheap then has to be fitted although it will have an economy charge period usually overnight. The “best seller” electric car in Spain is the 'Nissan Leaf' and Nissan dealers provide a slow or fast charging point but only for Nissan vehicles. In our area of Almería province there is one at Vera and Huércal de Almería and the BMW dealer in the same area has a charging point as do Renault. Apart from this it appears the only other points are at the Carrefour supermarket in Almería city and at the Parador Hotel in Mojácar for guests. So not many! Sellers of electric vehicles know there is a problem with charging, termed “range anxiety”, where drivers worry they may not make it to the nearest place. Dealers say it takes four to five times as long to sell an electric vehicle to a normal motorist as there are so many potential problems. How long it takes for a charge (in normal circumstances about 3 hours), how much it will cost for their charging point, where there are other points, and if they can use air-conditioning. For short journeys such as to work and back of about 50kms each way, an electric car should not be a worry. Using the car for holidays may well be impossible.

Strike Action

F

ocus magazine readers who keep up to date with news from the UK often come across threats of strike action or the real event. Railways and London Underground unions seem to be calling for strikes regularly that often cause chaos. Then there are the ongoing junior doctor's strikes. Political pundits were fairly surprised that after Teresa May took an axe to cabinet ministers Jeremy Hunt was still Health Secretary.

Russian figure. In the UK, children are given on average homework that requires 5 hours a week, the same as the average in all of the countries surveyed, but in Finland it is only 2.8.

Strikes in Spain don't seem to occur very often, or if they do they don't affect people here. Thinking back, one of the main problems is probably when French air traffic controllers have a dispute and planes to and from the UK are cancelled. In November, a strike is being called for in Spain on every weekend from 2pm Friday afternoon until 9am on Monday morning. If everyone observes the strike this means a total of approximately 5.5 million people throughout Spain. As the total population in Spain is given as 46 million in 2016 this is nearly 12%. The good news is that this strike action is being called by the Spanish Confederation of Parents of Pupils in Schools. They are complaining about the amount of homework given to school children in Spain that is rising steadily. They want homework to be cut back drastically or even scrapped and are calling on pupils and parents to refuse to do or allow any homework over the weekends even if pupils are given some on the Friday. The amount of homework that pupils are given and the time it takes varies widely in different countries. A survey by the OECD, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development that investigate social trends throughout the world shows that children in secondary education in Shanghai are given homework that totals 13 hours a week, closely followed by Russia where 10 hours are handed out. In Spain the official figure is 6.5 hours but the Spanish confederation's own surveys made with the co-operation of the Ministry for Education believes that the true figure is much higher and close to the

The Spanish Confederation says that too much homework is bad for family life and even the health of school children and the boycott of any homework at weekends in November is designed to underline the problems. Parents can obtain a form that they or their children take to school that states they are opposed to homework on Fridays during this period but they still want the amount of homework in general to be greatly reduced. A survey of nearly 2,000 parents reveals that 50% think that homework has a negative effect on family life, and 50% of 500 children who were considered a representative group also said that the time they spent with parents after they had done their homework was quite short. Some educational studies seem to prove that the benefits of homework are difficult to justify. In Finland where homework is restricted to maths and the Norwegian language and only 2.8 hours a week, their educational standards are very high. Some parents consider that homework is a good way of improving the academic achievements of their children and is a necessary tool but many parents, not just in Spain, say the amount is too much. So strike action in November? It remains to be seen if it takes place on a large scale.

Charity Reports 250 Euros which can be used to help with badly needed renovation. Volunteers have come over from England and are busy cementing and tiling. New Shop. On Friday, 16th September, PAWSPATAS opened their 6th charity shop, in Turre, situated at the start of the village, on the left hand side next to the Mapfre insurance office. The opening was a roaring success and raised 425 Euros in just 3 hours. As a result the shop is now in dire need of your donations!!

PAWS/PATAS. The large French theme fundraising event on September 3rd at the Polansky residence, rechristened “Chateau Polansky” for the day, raised 1,000 Euros for PAWS /PATAS. The Incognito Singers gave a stunning and emotional performance to a sell-out audience included a rousing medley from Les Miserables and concluded with Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals excerpts that received a standing ovation. The money is being used for renovation to the dog kennels at the shelter where cleaning is difficult or impossible with large holes in the concrete floors. The 2016 Villaricos Wacky Races in May raised sufficient funds to provide a “Baby alive” doll and accessories, sent from America, for Daniela, an 8 year old girl who is undergoing chemotherapy for a bone condition. Her mother works at La Cantina de Flor bar/cafe on the Garrucha paseo which is a regular supporter of the Wacky Races. Money was also given to provide an air-conditioning unit and a flat screen TV for the reception class at the Villaricos school in time for the new school year. A meal is being provided for the over-65s of Villaricos. Next year's Wacky Races in Villaricos will take place on May 13th. The “Ladies Who Care Productions” put on another “JUST JOYCE” show at Miraflores Camp Site on Thurs, Sept 15th in order to raise urgently needed funds for PAWS/PATAS animal charity. They are pleased to announce that they raised

“MACS” (The Mojácar Area Cancer Support charity). Brian and Sheila Rodger have been visiting Vera Playa for the past eleven years and five years ago they moved here permanently. Their dream of a long life together in Spain was cut short by Sheila’s death last March. Brian hit upon a way to pay tribute to his loving wife and also to aid MACS by raising funds in his wife’s name. He drove back to the UK to see friends and relations and asked people to guess how many miles he would travel from Vera Playa through Spain, France, England, Scotland, and back. He asked for one Euro per guess, with no limit on the number of guesses with collection areas at Frankie´s Bar and The Blue Parrot Bar on Vera Playa and the Forget Me Not shop in Las Buganvillas. He left here on August 9th and arrived back on August 31st travelling a total of 3,917 miles or 6,304 kms. The nearest guess was 3,915 miles from Sandy and Irene Crombie. To date Brian has raised 473 Euros for MACS.

Jokes of the Month The Devil in the Church

Face Cream

One Sunday morning, Satan appeared before a small town congregation. Everyone started screaming and running for the front church door, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away. Soon, everyone was gone, except for an elderly gentleman who sat calmly. Satan walked up to the man and said, "Don't you know who I am?" The man replied, "Yep, sure do." Satan asked, "Aren't you going to run?" "Nope, sure ain't," said the man. Perturbed, Satan asked, "Why aren't you afraid of me?" The man calmly replied, "Been married to your sister for over 48 years."

Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother was putting cold cream on her face. “Why are you rubbing that cream on your face, mommy?” he asked. “To stay pretty for daddy,” said his mother. A few minutes later, she began removing the cream around her eyes with a tissue. “What’s the matter?” asked Johnny. “Giving up?”

Going Fishing A man called home to his wife and said, “Honey I have been asked to go fishing up in Canada with my boss & several of his friends. We’ll be gone for a week. This is a good opportunity for me to get that promotion I’ve been wanting, so could you please pack enough clothes for a week and set out my rod and fishing box, we’re leaving from the office & I will swing by the house to pick my things up. Oh! Please pack my new blue silk pyjamas.” The wife thinks this sounds a bit fishy but being the good wife she is, did exactly what her husband asked. The following weekend he came home a little tired but otherwise looking good. The wife welcomed him home and asked if he caught many fish? He said, “Yes, lots of salmon, some bluegill, and a few swordfish. But why didn’t you pack my new blue silk pyjamas like I asked?” “I did,” she replied. “ They’re in your fishing box…..”

Little Johnny Wants to Marry Little Johnny and Little Lisa are only 10 years old, but they know that they are in love. One day they decide that they want to get married, so Johnny goes to Lisa’s father to ask for his blessing. Johnny bravely walks up to him and says “Mr. Jones, me and Lisa are in love and I want to ask you for your blessing.” Thinking that this was the cutest thing, Mr. Jones replies, “Well Johnny, you’re only 10. Where will you two live?” Without even taking a moment to think about it, Johnny replies, “In Lisa’s room. It’s bigger than mine and we can both fit there nicely.” Still thinking this is just cute, Mr. Jones says, “Okay then how will you live? You’re not old enough to get a job. How will you afford food and rent?” Again, Johnny instantly replies, “With our allowance. Lisa gets 5 bucks a week and I get 10 bucks a week. That’s about 60 bucks a month, and that should do us just fine.” By this time Mr. Jones is realizing that Johnny has put much thought into this. So, he thinks for a moment trying to come up with something that Johnny won’t have an answer to. He then says, “Well Johnny, it seems like you’ve got everything all figured out. I just have one more question for you. What will you do if the two of you should have kids of your own?” Johnny shrugs his shoulders and says “We’ve been lucky so far…”

...and next... The Green Green Grass of Home Doc, I can't stop singing the 'Green Green Grass of Home'. He said: 'That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome'. 'Is it common?' I asked. 'It's not unusual' he replied.

A Homeless Man's Funeral - A Touching Bagpipe Story Special Day Over breakfast one morning, a woman said to her husband, "I bet you don't know what day this is." "Of course I do," he irritatingly answered, going out the door to the office. At 11am, the doorbell rang, and when the woman opened the door, she was handed a bouquet of red roses. At 2 pm a two pound box of her favourite chocolates arrived. Later, a boutique delivered a designer dress. The woman couldn't wait for her husband to come home. "First the flowers, then the chocolates, and then the dress!" she exclaimed. "I've never had a more wonderful ‘Independence day' in all my life!"

The Ugly Baby A middle-aged couple had two beautiful daughters but always talked about having a son. They decided to try one last time for the son they always wanted. The wife got pregnant and delivered a healthy baby boy. The joyful father rushed to the nursery to see his new son was horrified at the ugliest child he had ever seen. He told his wife: ‘There’s no way I can be the father of this baby. Look at the two beautiful daughters I fathered! Have you been fooling around behind my back?’ The wife smiled sweetly and replied: ‘No, not this time!’

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the back country. As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I really felt bad about being so late and apologized to the men. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’d never played before, for this homeless man. And as I played ‘Amazing Grace,’ the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I’d finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full. As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothing like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.” Apparently, I was still lost…
