pain and Andalucía are experiencing a rise in that there was no social distancing in the cheaper the number of people with COVID-19 and in seats. Almería province there has been a rise as well. Total deaths towards the end of September had risen to 110 with 35 of these being elderly people from two residential homes. Stopping the spread and containment in homes like these is not easy and the problem is that many elderly people in these homes are very old and suffering from existing chronic medical conditions. We have more details in an item in our “In the News” section. With children now back at school there is a health monitor in every school who liaises with the local health authority when any case is reported. This protocol was activated when a teacher of a class of primary education in Mojácar reported that they had tested positive, and the same thing happened a day later in an infant class in Garrucha. All pupils were very quickly given swab tests at a drive-thru area in the car park at La Inmaculada hospital in Huércal-Overa with very quick test results that showed no positive infections. Despite this, the pupils had to be in quarantine at home for 14 days with internet lessons, which may mean that parents have to stay off work. There are still very few cultural events, particularly in the municipal auditoriums in Almería city, Roquetas de Mar and Águilas. Performances by large orchestras, opera and ballet companies have been postponed until 2021 as the stages are not large enough to allow social distancing for the performers. Instead, the numbers of Spanish plays has increased as social distancing for a small number of performers is possible. It is still intended that the 10th Almería Western Film Festival takes place from October 8th-11th at Tabernas with an assurance that all the necessary health precautions will be observed. Where events do take place inside there is still a maximum capacity of 65%. In our “In the News” section we comment on the staging of an opera at a famous opera house in Madrid. Angry spectators forced a cancellation of the opera after just a few minutes, with complaints
A welcome announcement from a delegate from the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) was made on a visit to Vera when she met the mayor. Maribél Sánchez told him that major work on the Rio Antas riverbed was almost at a stage when it could be put out to tender. This September 28th marked eight years from the disastrous floods in 2012 causing major damage to Pueblo Laguna, Vera Playa and Puerto Rey with four deaths. If this proves to be the case it is very good news for residents and visitors. Maribél Sánchez stated that the money would come from two EU budgets. The Andalucía Tourist Board has announced that up to May 31st next year people on the padrón (the official list of residents in a municipality) in Andalucía can have a 25% discount on holidays within Andalucía. The discount has a ceiling of 300 euros and entails a stay of three nights, but three holidays can be taken within the time limit. The Almería Association of Travel Agents states that this scheme will hopefully lead to an increase in bookings and help the hard hit tourist industry. October 12th is Día de la Hispanidad, a national fiesta day in Spain, along with Monday, November 2nd. Local fiestas take place in Mojácar on the 7th and in Turre over the first weekend. The clocks go back one hour on the final Sunday of October, so this year on the 25th.

In the News was stated that there was a link between the positive tests of a teacher in Mojácar and in Garrucha. There will continue to be problems in schools but their management should be a lot easier now that all schools have a health monitor and established protocol, and in the two cases we mention above, the tests and results were very quick. On September 21st Fernando Simón, the Spanish pandemic expert, suggested that the anti-body test should be the one used where there were pupils in a class who needed testing. It is almost as reliable as the PCR tests and the result is available in 15 minutes. One problem is that parents, or a single parent of a young child in quarantine, cannot leave them at home on their own so if they normally work they can’t.
soon as a matter of urgency and the money will come from two EU funds. She stated that this September was the last year in which it could happen again. In the 2012 floods with rainfall of 200 litres per m2, the dry riverbed suddenly became deluged and vegetation caused a bottleneck that resulted in a tremendous amount of water being released. There was extensive damage to houses, cars and the deaths of four people. Every year since then, residents and holidaymakers fear that the same thing might happen again and on two occasions there have been warnings, partial flooding and an instruction that cars were moved to higher ground in Garrucha. In 2012, Queen Sofia came to Vera to see the damage and remarked that it was the third time she had come to our area after severe floods and she fervently hoped that it would be the last COVID-19 in Almería Province time. Last month we commented on an 8 million Unfortunately, as in the rest of Spain and in Andalucía euro project to make sure that in any other flooding there has been a rise in numbers of infections and the Cuevas desalination plant that was wrecked in deaths in our province. On Monday, September 21st, 2012, would not suffer the same fate. total deaths were 110 but 30% of these were elderly people from two residential homes in Almeria city and Vicar. Precautions to stop and contain the spread of the virus in these homes (and in Spain in general), is not working very well. In the three hospitals, on September 21st, there were 46 patients in general COVID-19 wards with 14 in intensive care, and numbers had reduced from the previous week. Since the epidemic began there have been 686 hospital admissions with 97 in intensive care. In 23 of the 103 municipalities in the province there has been no COVID-19 infected person, and the total of 7,500 people infected since the pandemic began is less Hugh Elliot, the UK Ambassador than 1% of the total population. It is some consolation that in our immediate area there are not a large The Diputación and Hugh Elliot number of cases and the main “hot spots” are In mid-September, the President and Tourist Almería city, El Ejido and Vicar. An Opera Per formance Abandoned The Teatro Real in Madrid is a famous opera house, and on the weekend of September 19th-20th they opened up for the first time since the start of the pandemic with a performance of “The masked ball” by Giuseppe Verdi. It quickly came to a halt after the overture when spectators in the top balcony area stood up and shouted because there were many rows of people sitting together without any social distancing. In the more expensive seats on the balcony below and on the floor of the opera house there were a lot of empty seats. A member of the management announced through a megaphone that the performance was cancelled and refunds of the ticket cost would be given. A spokesperson for the organisers stated that legally they could have 75% of the seats occupied, but owing to the layout of their seats this was not possible, so their own limit was 65%, and they had only sold 52% of the available tickets. A woman who claimed that there were 15 occupied seats in her row of the balcony area without any social distancing, complained that the percentage of seats occupied had no bearing on the case and the distinct lack of people in the more expensive seats couldn’t mean that they sold too many seats in the cheapest balcony area. After the performance was cancelled many people went to the ticket office to ask for an “Hoja de reclamación” (official complaint sheet) that ensures a complaint is investigated. This caused further problems as they soon ran out, and alternative forms had to be quickly printed off!
The Cost of Masks The Spanish Organisation of Consumers (OCU) has published information relating to the purchase of masks that was primarily aimed at pupils going back to school, but applies to everyone. Their conclusion was that re-useable masks were the most economical
and they should comply with UNE 0065 2020, and masks without this certification should be avoided. The correct masks give 90% protection and they recommended that a pupil used one in the morning and one in the afternoon if the end of school or college was followed by a bus journey. The cost is related to the number of times they can be washed and they stated that masks stocked by Consum that could be washed five times only cost one euro. Masks from Decathlon cost 5 euros 99 céntimos but they can be washed 70 times. In farmacias (chemists) there is a wider variation in cost and some are washable five times and cost 3 euros 50 céntimos, but ones that can be washed 135 times cost around 14 euros 50 céntimos. Masks that are not re-useable can work out more expensive considering that the recommendation is that they are discarded every four hours. The ones that should comply with UNE 0064 2020 can be purchased for about 45 céntimos at supermarkets or 50 céntimos at chemists. The long term cost over one month for the economic washable ones can be as little as three euros, but cost 27 euros for ones discarded every four hours. The OCU consider that masks should be available for pupils free of charge, at least for families with several children or in economic hardship. Their advice is that masks should be purchased in the appropriate size for the age and are available for children aged 3-5, 6-9 and 9-12. Children under the age of three should not be equipped with masks as there is a danger of choking. Their final warning is that it is not illegal to sell masks that do not comply with the certifications but their efficiency may be very low, so these ones should be avoided.
UME Contact Tracing We have previously commented on the unique ‘UME’ arm of the Spanish Military who are on standby for emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Soldiers from the base at Seville have been posted to two hospitals in Seville and Granada where they are carrying out telephone contact tracing to identify persons who may be infected following positive tests. Contact tracing only works if it done quickly and the aim is to reduce the contact trace time to a minimum. The tracing in two shifts is being done

Vodafone pioneered the 5G service in Spain in June 2019 and it is operational in 21 cities, and Orange will launch their network in five large Spanish cities in October. A snag at present is that 5G will be available only on the 3.7GHz band which has a low penetration in buildings, and is not a “stand alone” 5G system. This will not be improved until the government has an auction for the 700MHz band that is expected in early 2021. All 5G compatible mobiles at present cost about 1,000 euros but the network offers greater bandwidth and much faster speeds. Apple has yet to introduce their 5G model.
IP address on November 10th after the Spanish court investigators had given them this date, but no-one had realised that the date in the information from the US was 10 / 11 so October 11th. IP addresses are dynamic so they can change each time a computer is used and the relevant IP address had been used by the family on November 10th but not on October 11th. Luckily, a lawyer acting for the family eventually obtained the original information sent from the US and spotted the date error. It had taken a month to get the son’s computer released which had affected the making of the film.
US Date Confusion The US has a unique system of writing down the date / month / year that can be very confusing. They put a date in the order of month / day / year so when the attacks on the World Trade Centre took place on September 11th they refer to this date as being 9/11. In other countries it would be 11/9. Spain refers to important dates using the day and the initial letter of the month, so September 11th is referred to as 11 S and Christmas day is 25 D. Recently, it was revealed that a family of four in Madrid are suing the Department of Justice for 27,000 euros after a terrible period of seven months. It all started when police and a court official turned up with a search warrant, took away computers, USB sticks and mobile phones and conducted an exhaustive search. This extended to their oldest son who lived elsewhere and was involved in the production of a film. They took away his computer (that was the only one with some of the completed filming) and his phone and searched his car. It emerged that the search was related to child pornography but the investigation was “under seal” by the court so no exact details were revealed. It turned out eventually that the US body the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, via the US embassy in Madrid, had alerted the Spanish Cybercrime police that when a particular IP address was being used in Spain three videos of child porn had been uploaded to Facebook. Telefónica and Microsoft pinpointed this family as having used this
Flu Jabs in October The Spanish Ministry of Health have announced that throughout Spain vaccinations against the flu will be available in the first fortnight of October, but at the time of going to press there was no more information. Usually there are about 90,000 doses available in the province but in other years the vaccination program has not started until midNovember. Bringing forward the date whilst the pandemic is still in force is seen as a good way of combating the flu earlier than normal and it is considered that health centres will have the capacity in October to carry out the vaccinations. There are common symptoms between having the flu and the COVID-19 virus, but having a severe cold and a throat inflammation are not regularly symptoms of the pandemic. In normal years, where the aim in particular is to stop elderly people getting the flu, only about 60% of pensioners have the vaccination. The Health Department state that they want a much larger number to have the flu vaccine this year as the danger is that hospital beds may be in short supply, depending on the evolution of the pandemic. In the News other sectors of the population who should have the flu jabs are the chronically sick, people in care homes, pregnant mothers and people looking after vulnerable people, so care home staff, nurses and doctors. A major worry is that COVID-19 infections may flare up in November and December when people will be indoors far more than at present and may not have adequate ventilation to prevent the spread. In Australia the number of people with the flu dropped dramatically during March which is their high season for the flu. Health officials think that wearing masks to combat COVID-19 meant that the flu virus that is also airborne stopped the spread.
Andalucía scrapped their premium and normal cost number for contacting them and substituted a low cost number instead. The scrapping of these numbers will mean a change in consumer law, and FACUA the official consumer organisation has been campaigning for this to happen for a long time.
Scrapping 902 & 901 Numbers
Arms Sales in Spain
The Spanish Ministry for Consumer Affairs has announced that they plan to scrap the use of 902 and 901 prefix telephone numbers. The cost of ringing these numbers carries a premium charge that is considered to be abusive, and the EU declared numbers like these illegal in 2017. The 902 numbers are usually consumer department contact number and are used by many large companies. These companies have to have a normal rate contact number as well, but these standard tariff numbers are extremely difficult, or impossible to find. The government department CNMC that deals with mergers and unfair competition has previously fined Vodafone, Orange and Másmovil who they accused of promoting the use of these numbers with a rakeoff for themselves. An expected cost for ringing one of the 902 numbers from a Movistar landline for five minutes is 58 céntimos, and from a mobile 2 euros 80 céntimos. With 901 numbers the cost is less because they are normally numbers used for government or autonomous community public services, and the cost of a call is shared. Ringing from a Movistar landline for five minutes in this case will cost 28 céntimos and from a mobile 1 euro 80 céntimos. When these premium numbers are abolished, the cost for a consumer will be the same as the normal inter-province (or out of province) call that within a province may be free. Some large companies do not use these premium numbers, and ringing Telefónica on their consumer department 900 number is free. Not too long ago, the ‘Salud Responde’ health department of the Junta de
Spain has thriving sales of arms and military items, and in 2019 this amounted to 4 billion euros. Sales have gone up steadily since 2010 when sales were only 1.1 billion, and since 2013 they have never been less than 3 billion euros. 55% of sales are to EU and NATO countries, and some are a result of shared defence programs. Germany accounted for 1 billion euros in 2019 that was mostly for the purchase of six A400M military Airbus planes that are assembled in Seville. France accounted for 463 million euros and this included two A400Ms. Turkey is not an EU member but is part of the Atlantic Alliance and they bought items that totalled 307 million. 27% of all sales were to Asia with exports to South Korea of 588 million, and 342 million to Singapore. Australia spent 264 million and the UEA 179 million. 70% of total sales were aeronautics, 9% was electronic and computer equipment and 8% was for navy vessels. 7% of sales were of land vehicles, mortars, explosives, armaments and ammunition. ‘Tedae’ is an umbrella defence organisation that comprises the companies Airbus, Indri, Navantia, Iveco and Santa Bárbara which accounted for just less than 90% of total sales. Expectations for sales in 2020 are that there will be some reduction in numbers, and there are no deliveries of the A400M planes in 2020 although there are still orders in progress. The company Navantia has orders for five corvettes for Saudi Arabia that total 1.8 billion euros with deliveries starting in late 2021, and an order for two large troop-carrying amphibious boats is expected to be awarded before the end of this year.
Discount Train Tickets The Spanish rail company RENFE has discounts on the cost of train journeys of up to 57% until December 12th with 380,000 tickets on offer. Information is available from www.renfe.com/es/es or www.trenes.com/ renfe.

Worries of a Strong Euro
The euro currency is currently showing a strong growth against the dollar, and in mid-September the exchange rate was 1 euro / 1.2 dollars. The creation of the EU Restructure Fund has boosted the euro and the dollar is not currently seen as a good deposit for funds, along with an anticipated inflation rate in the US of 2%. The Central European Bank is watching the situation carefully and notes that this means that imports are cheaper and inflation in Spain is lower, but the cost of crude oil goes up with a weak dollar. Analysts think that it will almost certainly go up from 45 dollars a barrel to as much as 55 dollars, or perhaps a peak of 60 dollars, and this is a worry. On the other hand, a strong euro is good for European stock markets that will attract investors. In mid-September the euro to sterling rate was 1 euro / 0.926 pounds which has risen sharply since August 30th, and this May it was only 0.895. Less Crime in Spain Figures for violent crime in Spain continue to fall and the statistics for murder or homicide show a distinct downward trend. The category of murder for statistical analysis is where a person intentionally

In the News takes the life of another person, not involuntary or reckless homicide that is a charge that may be levied after a driver kills another person or safety precautions in industry are inadequate and an avoidable death occurs. Figures for intentional murder in Spain are 0.7 per 100,000 head of population, and in the last decade it has never been more than 1. The average in Europe is 1.2 per 100,000 with 1.3 in Belgium and 1.5 in London. The highest numbers as might be expected, apart from South American countries, are in the US with a world population of 13% but 37% of murders worldwide at 21per 100,000. In Venezuela their murder rate is 56.8 per 100,000 and in El Salvador it is 62.5. Criminologists cite various reasons for the decline in Spain and one of them is that violent crime between criminals is coming down although there are still cases of “scores being settled” in the Costa del Sol. A few years ago, criminal feuds and murders during the commission of a crime were 20% of all murders. Another category is impersonal murders such as the tragedy in La Rambla of Barcelona where a terrorist set out to deliberately kill as many people as he could. Between 2000 and 2018, including the Madrid train bombing in 2004 with 193 deaths, there were 268 people killed by terrorists in Spain. In general, with better intelligence and potential terrorists on a watch-list, there are less of these attacks and more preventative arrests. Reasons for a decline also include advances in security technology where CCTV has a discouraging effect and the diminishing of people carrying round large amounts of cash so fewer robberies with murder. One expert thinks that the “baby boom” that is now over has also led to a decline in murders by young people between the ages of 15-30, as this sector of the population has reduced in numbers. There are also far less gangs of young people in Spain compared to other countries who indulge in gang warfare. Another reason is that the legal obtaining of arms in Spain, that are not for sporting or hunting use, is much more difficult than in other countries. Apart from the police, the security services and security guards, the only other sector of the population who are licensed to be armed are people such as commercial travellers who regularly have high value goods such as precious stones that they are taking
to customers. The number of people in this category is not more than 300 in all of Spain. About 60% of all murders in Spain are family related, and in another news item we comment on the number of women (and sadly children) killed in domestic violence.
An Unusual Cargo Enormous lorries have been transporting wind turbine blades from the manufacturer Eblades Technology S.L. in Granada province to the port in Almería. They are being shipped to Germany for a wind farm and each blade is 65 metres long. The lorries were escorted by police vehicles who temporarily closed some sections of the roads along the way to enable the lorries to manoeuvre round obstacles. The second delivery of six blades took place at the end of August.
The Guitar Made in 1684 The Almería ‘Antonio de Torres’ guitar museum put on display last December a Spanish guitar made in 1684 by the guitar maker Thomas Durán from Seville. It was loaned to them by a private collector for the exhibition “Five centuries of the Spanish guitar”. This is the oldest guitar in Spain and the exhibition closed in mid-September. The private collector has decided to give it to the museum on permanent loan to be seen by guitar experts and the general public for the foreseeable future. The museum curator has explained that there are references to a Spanish guitar in Lisbon in the 16th century, and in Paris and Venice in the 17th century, and this guitar has been restored and authenticated by guitar experts in Paris. Very little is known regarding the guitar maker.
Four Frenchmen Charged with Rape In early September, two Spanish girls aged 15 and 16 went to a hospital and complained that they had been sexually assaulted by four young Frenchmen, who turned out to be aged from 20-25 years. The girls stated that they had been plied with drinks in a bar in the centre of Seville and were then invited to go to an apartment building where they were told there was a rooftop pool they could use. In the apartment they allege that they were given more drinks until they became inebriated and then sexually assaulted multiple times. An immediate investigation

In Spain, a girl under the age of 16 is not considered to be legally able to consent to sexual activity and people who have intercourse with an underage girl (in this case by force) are usually charged with statutory rape. One of the men had taken a video of the assaults showing resistance by the two girls, so charges of sexual assault and rape were made relating to the 16 year old. A judge ordered them to be detained on remand.

In the News so far this year came to 30. The man fled the scene in his car but was located by police, and the body of the woman was found by her two sons aged 10 and 14. The man had previous criminal convictions and had been released from prison three months before the murder. This was the second murder of a woman in Murcia province this year following the murder in June of a woman in Cartagena, and this couple were going through a process of separation. This number is sadly more than normal and the state of alarm and restrictions are given as a reason why relationships can be strained and result in violence. In Spain, women subjected to domestic violence can ring the dedicated number 016 for reports of violence or advice. The lines are manned 24/7 and in the case of a report of violence there will be an immediate response from the police. A translation facility enables the calls to be made in 54 languages and calling the 016 number is not shown on a list of dialled numbers with smartphones purchased from the second half of 2017. There is also an email address which is 016-online@iguadad.gob.es. In Andalucía, in the first half of this year, there were 1,360 calls made to 016 which is 48% more than in the same period last year. Men convicted of domestic violence who are not sent to prison are invariably banned from being within a certain radius of where their partners live, and women may be given an emergency bracelet to summon help. Men can also ring the number for advice on separation, divorce and the custody of children, and their calls in work hours will be transferred to another department. The use of this number by men has been criticised as not being appropriate as the whole point of the 016 system is to prevent domestic violence towards women. Supporters state that if advice to men results in less domestic violence this is a good thing.
25% Holiday Discount The Junta de Andalucía Tourist Department have announced that residents of Andalucía who are on a padrón (the official register of inhabitants in municipalities) can go on holiday within Andalucía and claim a discount of 25% off the cost. The holidays can be taken from October 1st to May 31st up to a maximum of three holidays, and a top limit on the 25% discount for each holiday is 300 euros. This
means that for a family of four who book a holiday that costs 1,200 euros they will get the full 300 euros discount. A condition is that the holiday has to be for three nights or more and booked through licenced travel agents who have been given the ‘Andalucía Seguro’ category, who will administer the scheme. The President of the Almería Association of Travel Agents (Asaval) stated that this was very good news for the tourist sector, and the ‘Andalucía Seguro’ category applied currently to almost all of their travel agents, and more were in the process of applying. This category also means that all the health requirements had been complied with where people could stay. This appears to apply at present to 101 apartments, 67 rural establishments and 270 hotels, with applications in the pipeline from other establishments. Nine million euros in discounts is being made available and more money may be provided depending how the scheme works out.
San Juan de los Terreros Castle Work to restore the castle at San Juan de los Terreros has been authorised by Pulpí council. The castle is on the catalogue of monuments of great cultural heritage and was constructed in 1764 as a lookout tower for coastal defence, part of a comprehensive plan by King Carlos III. In 2015, guided visits took place to see the virtual representation of the Pulpí geode, which was not then open to the general public. Continued ....

Police enquiries revealed that the cannabis had originated in Granada and the man posing as a painter had made 40 trips between September 2019 and February in rented vans. In MĂĄlaga, police arrested persons who were responsible for acquiring the cannabis and allocating it to various people in Granada for onward distribution. A total of 13 people were arrested along with 40kg of cannabis, scales, packaging materials, a hydraulic press, three pistols, ammunition and 100,000 euros. A police spokesperson stated that the gang was perfectly organised and a painstaking investigation, involving co-ordinated actions by police from the three provinces, had revealed who the various people were and resulted in the arrests.
The average age of people becoming infected with COVID-19 continues to fall. In AlmerĂa province at the beginning of September, when there were 1.700 people infected in the previous 14 days, 1,020 (60%) were under the age of 44. 390 were aged 15-29, and 455 were aged between 30-40 with hardly any difference between men and women. Prior to the return to school, the worrying statistic was that 207 young people were infected below the age of 14 which was 50% of all cases in this age group since the pandemic started. There were 300 persons aged 15-19 who tested positive, and during September and October some of this age group will be in schools and colleges. 152 people who tested positive were aged 20-24. In the age group 70-74, there were 142 infected people that clearly shows that younger persons are the most affected at present. The problem with young people being infected, often Bankia & CaixaBank without serious symptoms, is that they may infect Last month we reported on the Central European Bank making regular checks to see if any bank in the friends and family members. In the News been abandoned because of the pandemic. Two years ago they fused with the BMN bank and new proposals are that they fuse with CaixaBank and become the largest bank in Spain. This will have to be approved by the Spanish Bank Restruction entity and the CEB, but the fusion is seen as a very good idea. The state ownership of the new bank will go down to 16% and this stake should be much easier to sell. CaixaBank have 4,500 branches and 36,000 employees whist Bankia have 2,200 branches and 16,000 employees. In the first quarter this year, prior to the pandemic, CaixaBank declared a profit of 205 million euros, well down on 2019 figures, and Bankia declared a net profit of 142 million, similarly down from 2019. The value in shares of Caixabnk has gone down by 37% this year but those of Bankia have gone down by 42%. As we pointed out last month, a fusion of two banks greatly reduces operating costs but there will almost certainly be a closure of some branches and a reduction in staff. An initial estimate is that the two banks will shut 1,500 branches and may lay off 3,000 workers, except in other cases long term employees have been offered early retirement. A figure of 200 surplus staff has been given for Almería province. On September 17th it was announced that the merger was taking place, the two directors of the banks would be joint CEOs, the headquarters would be in Valencia and the ownership would be 75% CaixaBank and 25% Bankia. The saving on operating costs is put at 770 million euros in 2023. The number of bank employees at the end of 2019 in the UK was 344,000 spread between 7,600 branches. This is a far greater number per branch than in many other countries, and the number in Spain was only 173,500 in 24,000 branches. In 2021 it is anticipated that 4,000 branches from various banks will shut.
Lionel Messi to Stay At Barcelona Following the 8-2 defeat of Barcelona by Bayern Munich in Portugal on August 14th their star player, Lionel Messi, officially announced that he wanted to leave the club and exercise a clause in his contract that said he was entitled to leave whenever he wanted to, without any severance payment. Protracted negotiations took place and it then became clear that this option had expired on June 10th which was
when the current season should have finished. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the season had not finished and the last phase had not started, and Messi considers that he has been a victim of unfair circumstances. He dismissed the idea of any court action which was recommended by his legal advisors who said that his leaving date without any penalisation should have automatically been extended to the actual ending of the season and not June 10th. He said he would never resort to this in fairness to the club as, "It is the club of my life, I have made my life here."His only option if he left before his contract expires on June 30th next year was to pay a severance fee of 700 million euros (624 million pounds sterling). He stated that no football club that would like to have him as a player could come up with this sort of money so he would have to stay. From January next year he is free to start negotiations for a transfer to another club. He is viciously critical of the club President, Josep Maria Bartomeu, who is president until next March, and accuses him amongst other things of “covering up the holes as they go along”. It has been suggested that he will have to resign shortly to avoid any more confrontation now that Messi is staying with Barca. If he does not resign, elections for the President take place on March 20th21st. On September 15th Barcelona were playing Real Madrid and they lost 6 nil.
Discounts for Electric Vehicles The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition unveiled the Plan Moves II on June 17th this year. With a budget of 100 million euros it gave purchasers of electric vehicles, up to a ceiling of 45,000 euros, a discount of 6,500 euros. Autonomous communities (in our case Andalucía) had until September 16th to implement the scheme, and the amount of money available depended on the population. Only 11 of the 17 communities had done this in early September, so 20% of the funds were not yet allocated. In Andalucía there was 18 million euros available and they only put the plan into place at the last minute, whilst in Murcia they had put it in place in June with 3.16 million available. ‘Faconauto’, the Spanish Association of Motor Dealers, complained that not introducing the scheme until the last minute denied potential purchasers the ability to take advantage of the

Historic Exports During the pandemic, the Junta de Andalucía Ministry of Agriculture has been organising many virtual meetings with agricultural growers and importers in other countries involving 1,700 companies. From January 1st to June 30th sales of agricultural products amounted to the historic figure of 6.53 billion euros. The blanket term of agricultural products includes frozen meat, veg, fruit, olive oil, flowers, plants and cereals. The provinces of Almería, Málaga and Granada had the most sales, and Almería was at the top of the list with 30% of all sales which came to just under two billion euros, up 6.6% on 2019. Countries with the most imported goods were Germany, France and the UK, followed by Italy and the Low Countries, but China accounted for 142 million sales along with Tunisia, Australia and Morocco, with the US accounting for 6% of imports to the value of 363 million euros. A spokesperson from the Junta de Andalucía stated that there was an enormous market in Africa and Asia that needed to be exploited, but current exports are double the national average in the rest of Spain.
Found After 25 Years In 1995, an Argentinian woman called Blanca Mabel Otera, aged 43, went missing from her house in León and there was never any trace of her or contact with family or friends. A body of a woman who had drowned was washed up on a beach in Santander in 2001 and was thought to be her, but DNA tests proved that it was not. In late August, at Siero in Asturias, police were contacted by neighbours who reported that an elderly woman called Eva had not been seen for several days. Police found that a key was in the lock from inside the apartment so they forced a window to get in. They found the woman lying on the floor unable to move and suffering from severe dehydration and disorientation. She was unable to tell the police who she was, although she mentioned

Costa de Almería and Eurosport The tourist department of Almería city started making short spot videos during August promoting Almería in the ‘Costa de Almería’ campaign to be shown on Eurosport at the time of the Roland Garros tennis tournament in France from September 27th to October 11th. It is calculated that 153 million homes in 54 countries watch the tennis matches, and the former tennis champion Henri Leconte, who won the Roland Garros championship in 1988 and the Davis Cup in 1994, featured in all the videos. Henri was filmed at the Calar Alto observatory, the Tabernas desert, Cabo de Gata, the Pulpí geode, the Civil War tunnels in Almería city, and eating at restaurants serving typical food from this region, as well as taking part in snorkelling, kayaking, 4 x 4 tours and a tennis match at the Club de Tenis in Almería. He spent a week making all the videos and stated that he was extremely impressed with everything he had seen. Opposition councillors in Almería criticised the cost of the spot videos that amounted to 400,000 euros when people from many European countries could not come here, or didn’t want to. The Councillor for Tourism stated that because of the pandemic very large numbers of people, particularly in France, would watch the tournament on television this year, as no spectators could go there, and it was money well spent.

World Chocolate Day
S
eptember 13th was World Chocolate Day so chocoholics could indulge with a clear conscience, and 2020 is given as the 500th anniversary of cocoa beans being introduced into Spain. World Chocolate Day came into being in the 1990s in France in commemoration of the date of birth of the multi-talented Roald Dahl who, amongst other popular books, wrote ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ in 1964, turned into the famous film in 1971 starring Gene Wilder and another in 2005 starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.
your appetite and reducing cravings by inhibiting insulin resistance. The production of endorphins after consuming dark chocolate also reduces the urge to indulge in comfort foods. Studies have shown that regular consumption of dark chocolate can help reduce the risk of diabetes through the preventing of insulin resistance, because the flavonoids help with lower blood sugar. People with Type 2 diabetes can even take small amounts of dark chocolate to help regulate blood sugar levels.
Chocoholics don’t need many excuses to eat chocolate but dark chocolate, ideally 70% solids, has very distinct health benefits. This percentage has a low fat content and is rich in antioxidants. As regards combatting heart disease, dark chocolate contains high levels of flavonoids, which are paramount in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, consequently reducing the risk. Eating chocolate also improves the functioning of the coronary artery and prevents blood clotting and the clogging up of arteries as a result of reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL), often referred to as “bad cholesterol”. The flavonoids stop LDL from oxidizing and they have high levels of stearic acid, which further increases the level of good cholesterol and lowers LDL.
If you need any more reasons to eat dark chocolate, the presence of tryptophan, a natural amino acid in chocolate is essential in the production of serotonin, which greatly improves your mood. Another chemical found in chocolate is phenethylamine, present in relatively smaller amounts. It is also naturally occurring and acts by producing endorphins, the feel-good molecules. So Now You Know... The First Search Engine In 1990 the first search engine was invented by Alan Emtage, a post graduate computer scientist from Barbados, and fellow graduate Bill Heelan, at McGill University. They called it ‘Archie’, an abbreviation of archive without the letter ‘V’. It was designed to provide an index of public ‘FTP’ (file transfer protocol) sites, the internet information repositories before the Web and home pages, for people at the university. By 1992 it was hailed as an enormous success as it had catalogued over 200 public sites, which was a revolutionary new concept. At its peak in 1995 a total of 30 Archie-type search engines had catalogued several million pages. The Printing Press The German Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press about 1440. His previous invention was a moulding technique that enabled him to produce large quantities of metal letters and symbols. His mechanised printing press transferred the ink made from linseed oils and soot directly from the typeface to paper extremely quickly. This led to the widespread dissemination of knowledge for the first time. By 1550 it is estimated that 20 million books had been printed in Western Europe. Printing copies of the bible enabled far more people to read it, and Martin Luther published his “95 Theses”, a document that sparked the Protestant Reformation. A Great White Shark Story In 2019, Japanese fisherman reported that a Great White Shark had been caught in a fishing net with a sea turtle blocking his throat, which had caused the shark to die. This followed a story going round the day before that a shark had been spotted that looked near death, with a turtle clamped in its jaws. If sea turtles sense danger they try to turn sideways which makes it difficult for a sea predator to grasp them. A marine scientist explained that sharks must swim to breathe with their mouths open so as to allow oxygen rich seawater into their gills, and anything that obstructed this one-way flow could lead to suffocation and death.

The Largest Diamond On January 25th 1905 at the Premier Mine in Pretoria in South Africa, a 3,106-carat clear diamond that weighed 1.33lbs was discovered 18ft below the surface by Frederick Wells, the mine superintendent. He gave it to Sir Thomas Cullinan, the mine owner, and it became known as the “Cullinan” diamond. He sold it to the Transvaal government who presented it to King Edward VII as a birthday present, and Joseph Asscher, head of the Asscher Diamond Company in Amsterdam, was given the diamond to cut. He studied it for six months and on his second attempt it split exactly as planned, when he is reported to have promptly fainted! The Compass Ancient mariners navigated by the stars, but this method didn’t work during the day or on cloudy nights, so it was unsafe to voyage long distances from land. The Chinese invented the first compasses sometime between the 9th and 11th centuries and they used lodestone, a naturally-magnetised iron ore. They didn’t indicate all the points of the compass but showed the direction of south. With contact amongst mariners this technology was imported into Europe and then Arabian countries. Ships could now travel long distances from land which led to an increase in sea trade and greatly contributing to the age of discover y. Nails Before nails, wooden structures had to be fixed together with interlocking joints that took a long time to achieve rigidity. In the Ancient Roman period their craftsmen developed the ability to cast and shape metal with a blacksmith heating a thin iron rod and hammering it to provide a point and a head. Until the 1790s these hand-wrought nails were the norm until nail making machines replaced the hand process. After Henry Bessemer developed his process of mass-producing steel from iron, 10% of nails became made of a soft steel wire by 1886. This method of producing nails from steel catered for 90% of all nails by 1913.

Spain’s Most Expensive Houses
D
uring the COVID-19 pandemic there has been some downwards adjustment in the price of property and an 18% reduction in applications for mortgages. This doesn’t apply to the top end of the luxury market and the Spanish company Idealista has published details on their website showing where the most expensive areas in Spain are located. They list luxury addresses in various provinces.
cinema and a gym, on sale for 32 million euros. Another luxury house not too far away from Villa Cullinan has 3,200m2 of living space on a plot of 7,800m2 with 10 rooms, 13 bathrooms, an impressive main staircase, a panoramic lift, an indoor golf simulator, home cinema, disco and two apartments. There is a spa area with an indoor salt water pool, a sauna, hydro massage area and Turkish and Roman baths, for only 29 million euros.

Traffic Light Food Labelling
P
eople buying food and drink products often have no idea how to interpret the long list on the packaging to decide if a product is healthy or not. Looking at the calorie content is not too difficult but all the other designations are almost impossible to compare from one to another.
Products that are all untreated are exempt and these include fresh products such as meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, bread, coffee, tea, infusions, milk, eggs, and items with a solo untreated ingredient such as vinegar, honey, wine, beers, spirits, dried fruits, grains, pulses and oatmeal.
Because of this, a new scheme will come into force in Spain in April next year, known as the “traffic lights” designation called “Nutri-score”. This has been in existence since 2014 when it was first proposed by nutritionists from Sorbonne and Oxford Universities and was accepted as being valid by the UK Food Standards Agency. It has been used in France since 2017. A horizontal bar has the colours dark green, light green, orange, light red and dark red, with the corresponding letters A,B,C,D and E that gives an indication of the healthiness of the product. There is a white outline that is a race-track shape that is placed over the corresponding letter. The labels have to be placed on the front of the product known in English as FOPL (front of pack label). The use of these bars is voluntary for manufacturers or those companies that package products, but Alberto Garzón, the Spanish Minister for Consumer Affairs, states that in consultation with suppliers there has been a good acceptance that the scheme is viable and that consumers may not buy products that lack the coding. Legislation will be passed in the Spanish parliament to provide a legal framework, and the existing system of listing ingredients, additives and energy content will continue in force.
In processed items that include some of the above they will count as part of the positive score along with protein and fibre content. Ingredients such as saturated fat, calories, sugar, salt and sodium will be included in the negative score. Category A will include packed bread, gazpacho, tomato puree and some jams. Category B will include non-alcoholic drinks without added sugar and treated meats along with chicken, turkey, and some breakfast cereals without sugar. Category C applies to dark chocolate, tomates fritos, and breakfast cereals with sugar. Category D includes sauces such as ketchup, some types of biscuits, and canned tea containing sugar. Category E will include all pastries, sugared drinks, pizzas and Algorithms received a very bad press in the debacle some pre-cooked items. over the recent exam results in the UK, but algorithms will be used that are applied to 100 gr Nutritionists consider that when choosing items of the product, with ingredients considered positive in a supermarket the labels will give the consumer and negative. The scores are then added up and an immediate indication of whether one item is will go from minus 15 to 40 with minus 15 being healthier than another one, and they will go for the healthiest and 40 the unhealthiest. For solid products in the highest and medium categories food the top dark green category is from minus and not buy products with the worst rating. It is 15 to minus one, the lighter green 0 to 2, orange also considered that the system will help to 3 to 10, light red 11 to 18 and dark red 19 to 40. prevent child obesity which is a problem in Spain.

Buying Dogs and Puppies
F
igures from December 2019 for dogs or puppies that have been micro chipped, so they are on a register, showed that there were 12 million in Spain, more than the number of children under the age of fifteen. Spain is a nation of animal lovers and whilst some dogs come from rescue homes, there are a great number that are purchased from breeders or dealers via the internet, particularly puppies. There are reputable breeders that are properly licensed, but there are many people who lack any of the necessary paperwork. Buying online is fraught with difficulties ranging from fraud where no dogs or puppies that are advertised actually exist, or puppies that have been taken from their mother far too early, or those that have illnesses that require immediate attention from a vet and in some cases only live a few days. There are a host of advertisements on the internet with claims that puppies have not been taken from their mother too soon, they have been given a health check by a vet, have been micro-chipped and in the case of a claimed pedigree there is documentation. Unfortunately, sometimes, none of these claims are true and in some cases the puppies have been shipped from countries such as Rumania where they have been bred in terrible conditions with multiple litters. 55% of purchasers of puppies in Spain opt for a pure breed so there should be proper pedigree documentation, 19% go for a stated mixed breed and 16% buy mongrels. Prices greatly vary with pure breed puppies from 400-600 euros but from some breeders the price “starts” at 800-900 euros (the price depends on their pedigree). These high prices will usually be breeds such as Maltese Bichóns, French Bulldogs, Bull Terriers and West Highland White Terriers. The Spanish Consumer Organisation stresses that internet purchasers should ask to be sent a scan of all the paperwork prior to purchase, including a health certificate from an approved vet in Spain who has to have an official licence number, and if
it is a pure breed, the pedigree documentation. This is very good advice unless the documentation has been forged! When a puppy is delivered it will invariably come via a courier and the advice is that a check by a local vet is essential in case there are problems. The presence of a microchip and the number can also be established. In theory, if there are severe health problems, the breeder should take the puppy back and make a refund.
Recently, after a painstaking investigation, police arrested five people following a deluge of complaints. This started in Caceres when a woman made an official complaint that she had bought a Maltese Bichón puppy and had made the required purchase price via a bank transfer. No puppy had been received, the mobile number of the seller was blocked, and there were no replies to emails. The criminal gang was made up of people in Castellón, Alicante, Ciudad Real and in Almería province from Olula del Río. This person is an alleged fugitive from justice for other offences with a criminal record, and a judge ordered his immediate transfer to prison on remand. All the people were charged with fraud, misappropriation of money, using false identities and belonging to a criminal gang. Obtaining dogs from a local rescue centre ensures that they have had the necessary vaccinations and health checks and may have been micro-chipped. They may not be pedigree puppies, but there are dogs of all types and sizes that absolutely need “a forever home”.

Community News Mojácar Civil Protection Mojácar Council approved the update of rules for their Local Civil Protection Volunteers Association in a recent extraordinary plenary meeting, bringing them in line with the General Regulations for the Autonomous Community of Andalucía. The changes will bring uniformity to the scope of their functions and their corporate image, as well as to the general criteria laid out for equipment and training. Mojácar’s Civil Protection members, as those in other towns, dedicate their time to the welfare of others, functioning as a team. These groups of voluntary citizens perform protective tasks, collaborating with others to carry out functions involving risk prevention, assistance, and rehabilitation. Participation for members is free of charge and, any adult with the ability to carry out the required duties can join on applying to Mojácar Council and passing the basic training course. The training focuses on the highest efficiency levels, safety, and risk avoidance, followed by an on-going series of compulsory training. The full approval of these new Regulations overrules the previous ones, published in the July 2016 Almería Official Provincial Report, which the Andalucía municipalities, including Mojácar, have been working with until now.
PAWS / PATAS 2020 is proving to be one of the toughest years for the PAWS-PATAS animal shelter, and now a record number of abandoned animals are making it even tougher. The charity’s PR and fundraising coordinator Chrissie Cremore reported that adult dogs, puppies, cats and kittens have been left at the shelter gates in numbers that the volunteers haven’t seen the like of before. This comes at a time when the outbreak of Covid-19 and the closure of the PAWS-PATAS outlets havemeant a loss of some 20,000 euros in takings. The pandemic has also prevented the charity from organising events which has added more major loss financially and in terms of profile.
they behave as if they have lived within a family environment. Therefore, the virus appears to have also caused financial problems with keeping a pet. There have certainly been some sad stories, like the four puppies left in a bucket in the searing heat in a field 100 metres away from the shelter gates but which were luckily found and survived. On the positive side there have been a large number of adoptions among locals and the charity had recently been able to re-home and transport to Holland and the UK. However, Chrissie underlines the point “there is absolutely no room at the inn” and what the charity desperately requires are more animal foster homes. PAWS-PATAS will provide bedding, food and so on for anyone able to care for a cat or dog for a period of time until the charity can arrange “Forever Homes”, locally or overseas. The charity needs people who know how to look after a cat or dog and are willing to take on this responsibility seriously. But Chrissie makes it very clear that PAWS-PATAS greatly values “fosterers” and does not want to put them off helping, so they ensure that they take back the animal as soon as space permits or someone wishes to adopt. Anyone interested in helping should email dogs@paws-patas.org or cats@paws-patas.org. For further information regarding donating, or volunteering in our outlets in Mojácar, Turre or Las Buganvillas, ground work, DIY, collecting overseas volunteers from the airport or Vera coach station, fundraising, etc...please see their website: www.pawspatas.org. PAWS-PATAS would like to send a huge “thank you” to all their supporters because they cannot exist without YOU!
It’s possible that the health crisis could be a key factor behind the increase in animal dumping because some of the cats and dogs being abandoned are very friendly, and although they are not “chipped”

Jokes of the Month The Adoption
Basic Needs
A father says to his teenage son, “Sit down James, and stop tormenting the poor cat. I have something to tell you; you’re adopted”. James replies, “I knew it, this is why you are always telling me off! I insist on meeting my biological parents”. The father replies, “No, we are your biological parents but the people who are adopting you will be here in an hour!”
A man walks into a police station and tells the desk sergeant that he wants to report that his wife is missing. The desk sergeant asks for her name and when she went missing. The man replies, “She’s called Jean, and she went missing about a month ago”. The desk sergeant looks up and asks him why he has not reported her missing before, as the first 48 hours are critical for locating a missing person. The man replies, “People at work are beginning to notice that I keep turning up in the same clothes and I’m fed up with eating junk food.”
Getting Into Heaven A man died and got to the pearly gates. St. Peter said, “We’ve looked over your life and, to be quite honest, you haven’t ever done anything that is particularly good or bad. In all, what you have done is quite boring. So we need more information before we decide where to put you. Can you tell us anything really good to help us decide?” The man replied, “Well, I was driving along and I saw a poor tramp who was being harassed by a group of hairy bikers. I pulled over, opened the boot, and took out my baseball bat. I went up to the leader who was a really big guy with a ring on his lip. I tore the ring off and told him that if they didn’t leave the tramp alone they would have me to deal with!” St. Peter replied, “Well, this is really impressive, but we should have seen this in your records. When did it happen?” The man replied, “About five minutes ago!”
The Actor An actor had been out of work for years because he often forgot his lines. Then one day, he got a call from a director who said they wanted someone his size to take part in a play. He only had to say one line that was, “Hark! I hear the cannon roar”. The actor was quite worried but he kept repeating the line to himself. On the opening night he was waiting in the wings repeating his line. As he walked onto the stage he heard a very large ‘boom’. He turned round and said, “What the hell was that?”
Wives Three guys were in a pub and two of them started taking about how much control they had over their wives, but the third man said nothing. One of them turned to him and asked, “Well, what about you, you haven’t said anything. What control do you have over your wife?” The third guy replied, “I’ll tell you. Just the other night my wife came to me on her hands and knees.” “Wow”, said one of the other two, “Why was that?” The third man replied, “She was shouting, ‘Get out from under the bed and fight like a man!”
The Clothes My very attractive stepmother came into my room when my father was out and said, “Johnny, I want you to take all my clothes off, so start with my blouse”. When I did this she said, “Now take off my skirt”, so I did. She asked me to take off her tights, and then her bra and panties, so I did this as well. She then said, “I have told you before about wearing my clothes. Don’t do it again and get dressed!”

...and next... Surgery A patient goes to see his doctor and tells him, “Doc.c.c.tor. My s.s.s. stuttering is a r.r.real p.p.problem. C.c.c.can you h.h.h.help me”. The doctor gave him a complete examination and tells him he knows what is wrong. “You’re pecker is extremely big and long so it is taking a lot of blood that is not getting to your brain, and the only answer is surgery to reduce the length by about 50%. The man consents to this, so the doctor gets out his scalpel and afterwards the man is sent home. About a month later he comes back to his doctor and says, “My speech is now fine, I don’t stutter at all, but my wife is not happy. Can the bit you amputated be sewn back on?” The doctor replied, “N.n.n.no, s.s.s.sorry”.
The Blondes
Homework
Three blondes walk into a police station and sy they’re looking for jobs as detectives. They meet with the police chief who says, "I'm going to show you a side mugshot of a man and you need to tell me something interesting about him.” He shows the picture to the first blonde and she says, "He's only got one eye". The police chief responds, "No, this is a side mug shot, so you will only see one eye." He shows the picture to the second blonde and she says, "He's only got one ear." The police chief again responds, "No, this is a side mug shot, so you will only see one ear." He shows the picture to the last blonde and she says "He wears contact lenses." Perplexed, the police chief looks through the file and sure enough, the man wore contact lenses. He says "That's oddly correct. How did you know that?"
Dad, can you help me with my maths homework? What can I help you with? I have to find the common denominator…What the heck, has noone found it yet? We were looking for that when I was in school!
The Lawyer A man is called down to the police station for questioning. “I’m not saying a word without my lawyer present,” he says. “You _are_ the lawyer,” the cop replies. “Yeah, so where’s my present?”
The blonde responds, "Well with one eye and one ear, he can't be wearing glasses."

Vodka When I was a kid, I found a bottle of vodka someone had left at the treehouse at the playground. So I took it to the police station. The police told me not to worry. They would get to the bottom of it.
