A Brief History of Alnwick Town AFC Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. Back in the Northern League, the club finished in 16th place, and achieved Grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League, meaning the club would be competing in the F.A Vase and Senior Cup once again. With plans for the future on the horizon, the club can hopefully look forward to a return of the glory years once again.

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents BIRTLEY TOWN. Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding and Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! Finally, I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie
Programme Notes - The Editor Today I’m hoping that the club will finish the season with a win, for the simple fact that it is the final game of Brian Brooks’ and Bryan Murray’s playing careers. Back in 2007 after the club had been relegated from the Northern League back to the Alliance, Brooka and Muzza were two of only a handful of players that were left when the rebuilding of this club began. From a spectator’s point of view, Muzza has plenty of the attributes that you look for in a player. He’s basically a leader. He’d run through a brick wall for the club and he will be a massive miss both on and off the pitch. Brooka played a massive part in keeping this club in the Northern League last season, and was deservedly awarded the 472 Supporter’s Player of the Year award. I wish I could provide exact stats for their careers but so many things have been misplaced/destroyed/taken from the clubhouse over the years it’s just not possible. I can however tell you their stats since our return to the Northern League. Bryan Murray Appearances = 119 (115 starts + 4 subs) Goals = 8 Yellow Cards = 34 Red Cards = 2
Brian Brooks Appearances = 84 Yellow Cards = 2 Red Cards = 1
The club are now looking forward to winning some of the fair play awards and saving a few grand a year in fines. In all seriousness though, it’s the end of an era and I hope that both might reconsider their decisions in the future. If they don’t, both have been fantastic servants to the club and nobody can have a bad word to say about either of them. Both are a clear example of what happens when this club getting under your skin. Once it gets hold of you, it’s very difficult to let go. Cheers lads! ‘OOMPA LOOMPA’ as the 472 song goes, Alex has become a permanent fixture in the defence at the club. Now that Marc Nixon has left, he has officially been crowned the club’s tallest player. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS Danny will be hoping for an injury-free season, having had lengthy spells out following games against Esh Winning. He has a different haircut every week, at the moment though he’s looking a bit bald on top, with a daft beard. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hillsy has returned to the club following his big money move to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion last season. Still a favourite of the programme editor due to his Sunderland roots, Hillsy adds some much needed experience at the back. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Tom Mac has taken over as captain this season. Loves the banter at the club, especially the away days involving Christmas jumpers and bribing the judges in Brampton. SPONSORED BY: JOHN PROUDLOCK BUILDING CONTRACTOR 01669 621 141 Jake will be hoping for more first team action this year, and following the retirement of the club’s long serving left back this could be his year. Younger brother of Danny, with a lot more hair on top, and a daft beard. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hoggy has become a permanent fixture at left back this season and is continuing to improve. A danger when he runs with the ball at defenders. Overdue a goal or two.

MIDFIELDER
The first player to score 20 goals in the Northern League for the club since James Swordy. Tony arguably kept the club up last season and scored some crackers in the process. A hat-trick against Birtley rounded off his season. SPONSORED BY: ALLAN TAIT Kev has returned to the club again following stints of kicking and punching lumps out of others in a cage. He’s a canny lad. Will never back out of a tackle, and sure to give Muzza a run for his money this year for the ‘Bad Boy’ award.

Tom is back in first team action following a successful cricket season (again) and also the birth of his first child. Lots of Northern League experience and a nuisance to defenders. Probably back playing cricket again now. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Described by his former club North Shields as a ‘legend’, Keith has a phenomenal scoring record in the Northern League, and he has finally come home! A big signing for the club, Keith bagged a brace on debut against Esh Winning. SPONSORED BY: ALAN BURN Minnow’s 2nd season with the club and he’ll be hoping to get more action this year from the starting line-up. Scored a couple of vital goals last season, lets hope for a few more again this season. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

TeamDinga Darts and Charity Cycle Team are proud to support Alnwick Town Football Club
For only £2.50 per section, you can help support Alnwick Town AFC financially for the 2013-2014 season by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch. Each section is roughly the size of a dugout in the illustration above, and you can use it to advertise a business, charity, or if you like simply your own name. You may purchase as many sections as you wish. If we can fill each section of the pitch, we will raise £205.00. Although this may not seem like much in terms or running a football club, every little helps. The money raised would almost cover the photocopying costs for the inserts of the matchday programme for the entire season. Contact us atafc1879@btconnect.com or on Twitter @alnwicktownafc for details. Current Total Raised: £110.00, with 53.66% of sections taken.

Our Visitors… Birtley Town Birtley Town FC reformed in 1993, joining the Wearside League and, at that time, taking their place in the old second division. After just missing out on promotion in their first season for a place in the top flight Birtley’s second season was to prove more successful. The club won promotion as Champions. On becoming established within Division One Birtley lifted their first major trophy in 1998 by overcoming the newly crowned Champions, Annfield Plain in the League Challenge Cup Final. Four years later the club had a magnificent season in all cup competitions, lifting both the League Challenge Cup and the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup, they narrowly lost out on a cup treble due to being on the wrong end of a penalty shoot-out result against Jarrow in the Sunderland Shipowners Charity Cup Final. This was followed by completing 6 consecutive years in reaching the final of the League Cup. In 2002 the club merged with Birtley ST. Joseph’S Juniors to expand the club and develop a clear progression route from under 7’s through to under 18’s, and develop girls and ladies football. This has proven to be very successful and has enabled the club to be awarded the FA Charter Standard Community Club Award. In the following season of 2003-04 Birtley ended 57 years without a League Championship when they were crowned Wearside League Champions Unfortunately the League Title was not accompanied by promotion as Birtley’s ground did not meet the standards required by the Northern League. The recently constructed changing facilities, completed in October 2006, together with the addition of floodlighting has enabled Birtley to gain promotion, to the Northern League. We are now able to compete in the FA Cup as well as the FA Vase. The ladies team are also competing in the FA Cup. As ground improvements continue, this will enable the club to look at the future and to continue to progress through the pyramid system.
Brian Brooks - ‘Brooka’ With today being the final game in the playing career of Brian Brooks, I thought it only right to ask him a couple of questions before the gloves are hung up for good. Q. Any idea how many games you’ve played in total for the club? A. I reckon that I will be around 50 behind Muzza, around 400 total. Q. What has been your best achievement whilst at Alnwick Town? A. Getting promoted back into the Northern League. Q. Who is the best player that you’ve played with? A. Jason Belisle Q. Funniest moment whilst at the club? A. Neil Catlow throwing his boot away defending a corner at Carlisle in the huff with a sore foot. Editor - Please see Muzza’s answer in a couple of pages, must have been a good one! Q. Do you see yourself back at the club in a coaching role? A. Already here as the Goalkeeping Coach Good to hear that Brooka is still going to be involved at the club on the coaching side of things. He’s a role model for the juniors coming though and will no doubt help the goalkeepers breaking through into the first team and reserve team squads.

Bryan Murray With the career of one of Alnwick Town’s longest serving players and club captain coming to an end, I felt it was only right to ask a couple of questions to the man himself. Q. As the clubs archives are limited, do you have any idea of how many games you’ve actually played for the club? A. I’m not sure, but Brooksy (statto) has said around 450500 games. Q. What has been your best achievement whilst at Alnwick Town? A. Winning promotion back to the Northern League. Q. Funniest moment whilst at the club? A. Causing a one-man pitch invasion at home to Brandon United last season (we’ll mention no names Mr Programme Editor!), or Neil Catlow taking the huff at Carlisle by throwing his boot away and playing in his socks all over a little blister! Q. Best manager worked under? A. Current boss Derek Atwell (I want to start today!) Q. Best player played with? A. Jason Belisle, James Lang and Matty the pole (Mati Halembiec).
‘Muzza’ Q. You liked a yellow card or twelve. Any favourites?! A. No favourites, I don’t condone them! Although sometimes you have to take one for the team. Q. What future do you see for the club? A. I expect a very good, strong future for the club with Derek as manager. The playing side of the club is changing, away from the ‘nearly / unlucky club’ to a team with a winning mentality. We’ve started to show this in the last couple of months where we’ve been hard to beat, but also played some good football in the process (at times!). There’s a very good core of players at the club, and with the addition of two or three new faces I believe we will be pushing high up the table. Q. Do you see yourself back at the club one day on the coaching side? A. Possibly! Cheers for the mention Muzza. Won’t be allowed to forget that game will I! Thanks to Steve Miller for the photographs.
