Editor’s Column
Welcome to St James’ Park for a repeat fixture from just under a month ago, where tonight’s visitors eased to an 8-2 away win, and their best result since promotion to the Northern League. From a supporter’s point of view, we’re looking for a reaction, as the last thing anyone wants to see is a team simply roll over and accept defeat. October is also our ‘cup month’, with fixtures in the League Cup, Ernest Armstrong Memorial, and the Senior Cup. I’m hoping that October won’t be the last month we see a cup fixture as this club is long overdue a cup run. The Vase run with 2 byes doesn’t count! On Saturday I wasn’t there to see it, but there is no shame in losing to Billingham Synthonia. A look at the form guide shows 6 wins out of 6, without conceding a goal, and that includes games against teams around the promotion spots. They will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Early prediction for promotion. Team Northumbria, Billingham Synthonia and Stockton Town. From what I saw of Whickham and Easington (no disrespect to either), they didn’t look to me like they’ll be challenging come the end of the season. Back home, thanks to John English and Dez Lamb who have been taking care of the pitch in recent weeks. Considering John had no previous experience in groundsman duties, he’s doing a grand job and the pitch has been looking in canny nick (and long may it continue). The letter draw is doing well, slowly but surely taking off, and we’ve made our first purchase with some of the profits. Grounds equipment has been getting shared recently between St James’ and Greensfield for the juniors, and one of the lawnmowers was beyond repair. Profit from the draw has paid towards a new mower for some of the smaller jobs. Without the letter draw and everyone taking part, this would have just been another headache of where to find the funds for the chairman. Thank you to all taking part, you’re making a difference already. Come on Alnwick! Cheers, Cookie 472
Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1901, Alnwick St James’s moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions. The club competed in the North Northumberland League, Coquetdale League and Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. Clive Burn (pictured back row left) is the most successful manager in the clubs’ history, and Eric Hately (back row 2nd left) is one of the most decorated players in the clubs’ history. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 6th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. The club is moving forward, with new floodlights installed, our Junior section is moving ahead with plans for an expansion at Greensfield which could finally see the children of Alnwick have playing facilities fit for purpose. Opposition Information
Blyth Town Football Club was first established back in 1995 originating as a junior football club with three younger male teams; under 10’s, under 11’s and under 13’s. Continuing with the male team theme it expanded to five teams and as the club progressed, more and more showed an interest in joining. Finally, the club introduced a brand new girls’ team in 1999 which became extremely popular and grew massively throughout the upcoming years. Blyth Town hit its highest point when it introduced adult football. Although the topic of an adult football club was widely discussed, the Club felt it wasn’t a necessity due to the other teams progressing from strength to strength. It only became a reality when the girls’ team became too old and the club struggled to enter them into any league once they reached the age of 14 so they were entered into a Ladies League – resulting in the launch of an adult section in the 2002/03 season for both genders. After 2000, all of Blyth Town’s teams played in multiple leagues and were hugely successful in doing so. In December 2002 the Club received the accolade of ‘Community Club’ for the F.A and was the first club in Northumberland to receive this recognition. Previously, only 180 clubs had achieved this out of 43,000+ nationwide. With its new status, the Club approached the Council with a view to obtaining land and attract funding from the Football Foundation. The site at South Newsham was suggested as the development had around £300K in developer’s money earmarked for sports and recreation. Shortly after, the Club received funds from a development fund and a Football Foundation bid to use for a £1 million refurbishment and development of the South Newsham facilities. Last season saw Blyth Town FC First Team win the Northern Alliance Premier Division for the third time in a row working with some of the best managers and coaches in the area. To enable the First Team to accept its promotion into the EBAC Northern League this season, Blyth Town FC First Team received a £500,000 private investment to help build a new flood-lit training ground, upgrade the pitch and training rooms to Northern League standards as well as the funds providing further improvements to the clubhouse facilities for the local community and visiting teams to enjoy.

On This Day / Previous Report
Alnwick Town 2-8 Blyth Town (2016/2017 Season) - From The Northumberland Gazette Those who support or just watch occasionally, always see plenty of action and goals; well it was so again but Alnwick came out the wrong side of an 2-8 drubbing from a team having its first season in the Northern League. A lot of the goals were the result of poor play and marking by Alnwick rather than the quality of goals. There were, however, a couple from good play. Blyth Town consisted of a number of ex-First Division players they had attracted but that did not excuse the self-inflicted action by Alnwick ably helped by some very poor decisions by the referee. Alnwick started off very positive and were in control for the first 15 minutes and Liam Brooks latched onto a pass to fire home: 1-0 after five minutes but after the quarter hour Gary Day’s shot found the net, the first of his four goals from an acute angle. Blyth gained more possession which resulted in two goals in ten minutes, the first by Connor Graham, chesting in the ball from two yards it was closely followed by Tony Stephenson making it 1-3 to Blyth. There was a serious question with the third being well offside but not given. In between Alnwick did make a couple of good chances, the first from an Alnwick free kick right to the far post for Joshua Hay point blank block was rebounded to Joshua but his following shot just went over then on the half hour a Hay Brooks move laid back to Tony Brown to take a snap shot just over. Sam Bouttell was called upon to make two fine saves but Alnwick kept going forward and Liam Brooks at the far post headed down and beat the Blyth keeper Mathew Crook to make it 3-2 to Blyth. At halftime it was Blyth in the lead but Alnwick had only themselves to blame and Blyth took advantage which any team would have done. Sam Bouttell had to be substituted at halftime due to an injury from a Blyth challenge. Dominic McMahon went between the sticks. The second half started fast and furious and after 65 minutes Blyth were awarded a penalty which was correct and Gary Days stepped up to slot home, his second and Blyth’s fourth. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Town but the two front men, Hay and Brooks, were causing Blyth problems all the time without any reward. Blyth took control limiting Alnwick to a few chances. The problem was with Alnwick being pushed back; players could not get up fast enough to support them. Blyth scored four goals in the remaining 25 minutes through further goals by David Robinson two, and Gary Day two, to complete his four. Alnwick produced a small period of pressure causing panic in the Blyth defence and Hay latched onto the ball at the far post but struck his shot just past the post through a packed area. Alnwick in the last 25 minutes kept on trying but made too many mistakes which Blyth capitalised on. At the end Blyth ran out 2-8 winners but it was a fact but not a true reflection. Afterwards the shock of the defeat the players were determined to put things back on track. Alnwick: S Bouttell, R Douglas, J Giles (L Dundas), G Bails, T McPherson, R Gair (C), M Graham, T Brown, J Hay, L Books, D Riddell (D Schiavetta). Unused Subs: J Morrison, J Jackson. Match Sponsor: Hardington Hogg Solicitors.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Here at Alnwick Town, it is the continued support from local businesses that ensures we are able to compete in the Northern League. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses and supporters. Just taking a look around St James’ Park, you will see that we have a lot of advertising boards from both local and national businesses. This form of sponsorship gives your business coverage at every home game, and with local photographers attending our games, you also have the possibility of your business appearing in the local newspapers or on the club website. Match and Ball sponsors are something we’ve really been pushing the last year or so. You may not know, but referee and assistant costs for Northern League games are usually £100 a game. If we can get Match and Ball sponsors for every home game, it goes a long way to covering our costs, and in return we advertise your business on our social media platforms. Player and Pitch sponsorships are our cheapest options of sponsorship for supporting the club, and the players always love it when they know they get a sponsor. The costs received from these go a long way to covering the costs of producing the programme throughout the season for ink toners, paper, staples, labels etc. Every little helps! If you’d be interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities please get in touch with us. You can e-mail us info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk , send a message to our Facebook or Twitter accounts, or speak to a member of the committee who will point you in the right direction.
Pitch Sponsorship
This sponsorship option is more for the supporters of the club, who can show their support by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch for just £2.50. 43 sections are available to sponsor. Filling all of the spaces will raise £107.50 for the club. Pitch sponsors are shown here in the matchday programme, and also on our social media accounts throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being a pitch sponsor, please e-mail info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk or get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.
