Editor’s Column
Welcome to what is basically our league derby for the season against Heaton Stannington. I hope those that have travelled have a safe journey back down the A1. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------It’s been an entertaining start to the season. Loads of goals, at both ends, with no other team being involved in as many goals per games so far. Manager Steve Mullen is probably tearing his hair out at conceding so many goals, but it’s definitely been good for the neutral. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------We have some fixtures confirmed in the cups. Blyth Town at home in the League Cup (11.10.16) and today’s opponents Heaton Stannington in the Senior Cup at home (25.10.16). We’re hoping for a cup run this season, and the winners of the League Cup game will travel to South Shields. A potential money spinner for both teams, and a chance to play against some players who really should be at a higher level. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thank you to today’s Match Sponsor, Hardington Hogg, who have sponsored 3 matches this season with Alnwick Town. It’s great to see another local business supporting the club, and it’s the first time I’ve had anyone sponsor 3 games in a season. All match and ball sponsors contribute massively to the cost of match official fees throughout the season. Did you know that it usually costs over £100 per game for the match officials? It’s easy to see how money seems to vanish no sooner than we raise it! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------You may have noticed on social media that a look through the late Clive Burns’ collection has unearthed a forgotten trophy for the club. The 1958/59 Northumberland Aged Miners Cup has been added to our honours list. Without Clive’s collection, I doubt I or anyone else would have found out about it. Thanks one again to Clive’s family for allowing us the time to look through his scrapbooks and get some photographs. Keep an eye on the club website in the future as there will be a page set up in memory of Clive’s achievements with the club. Anyways, I hope we aren’t too hungover today and get our first 3 home points of the season. Come on Alnwick! Cook 472
Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1901, Alnwick St James’s moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions. The club competed in the North Northumberland League, Coquetdale League and Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. Clive Burn (pictured back row left) is the most successful manager in the clubs’ history, and Eric Hately (back row 2nd left) is one of the most decorated players in the clubs’ history. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 6th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. The club is moving forward, with new floodlights installed, our Junior section is moving ahead with plans for an expansion at Greensfield which could finally see the children of Alnwick have playing facilities fit for purpose. Opposition Information
Although officially founded in 1910, Heaton Stannington were actually in existence by the 1903-04 season when they finished fifth in division 2 of the Newcastle and District Amateur League. In December 1904 they resigned from the league and there is no further record of the team until 1910 which suggests that they might have folded. The club name originates from its links with the Stannington Avenue area of Heaton. The next match played by the Stan appears to have been on 24th September 1910 when they were beaten 4-1 by Sandyford. The club joined the Tyneside Minor League in 1913 and Northern Amateur League (NAL) Division 2 in 1914. After WW1, the club spent next 19 years in NAL Division 1 and gained their first trophies in 1934 and 1936 when they won the Tynemouth Infirmary Minor Cup and NAL Challenge Cup respectively. The first glory season came in 1936-37 when the club won NAL Division 1, were Northumberland Amateur Cup winners and NAL Challenge Cup runners up. The reserves were also NAL Division 2 runners up. For one season, 1938-39, the Stan participated in the Tyneside League and were runners up. The Stan were elected to the Northern League in 1939. They only managed one season in the league before it was suspended for the duration of WW2. The league restarted in 1945 but the club were elected, until 1946, as a non-playing member as their ground was being used by the military. After 5 consecutive bottom three finishes, the club resigned at the end of the 1951-52 season and joined the Northern Alliance until 1956. The next 16 seasons included involvement in the NAL, North Eastern League and the Northern Combination. In 1972 the club stepped up to the Wearside League and remained there for ten seasons. They were forced to resign from the league in 1982 for financial reasons due to the club trustees, who had formed a limited company in 1968, putting the annual rent up from £400 to £1500. The company then tried to build a supermarket on the ground but the planning application was defeated. In 1983 the High Court ruled that the ground belonged to the football club and the company had to relinquish ownership. The team joined the Tyneside Amateur League (TAL) for the 1982-83 season and achieved only their second league title when they won the league in 1983-84. The next 2 seasons were spent back in the NAL where they were champions in 1985-86 as well as wining the Northumberland Minor Cup. For the next 27 years the club were in the Northern Alliance, which became a 3 tier league in 1988 and saw the Stan placed in the Premier Division. After two relegations to Division One, the Stan achieved stability by spending 9 seasons in the Premier Division. The club won their highest level league trophy when they became Champions in 2012. In 2012-13, they achieved the treble by not only retaining the title but by winning the Northern Alliance League Cup and the Northumberland Senior Benevolent Bowl.
Opposition Information
For season 2013-14, after a gap of 61 years, the Stan returned to the Northern League. They were in the promotion race throughout the season and finished fifth. In their second season back, they finished ninth and qualified for the FA Cup for the first time in 39 years. Last season, 2015-16, saw the Stan again finish ninth and they also reached the semi-final of the Northumberland Senior Cup against Blyth Spartans. As well as the successful over 40’s team, this season sees the Stan fielding four additional teams as a result of Newcastle Chemfica linking up with the club. In October 1935, the Stan started playing at Newton Park in High Heaton on the site of a recently filled-in quarry. In 2007, the ground was renamed Grounsell Park in honour of the service given, both on and off the pitch, by Bob Grounsell. One of the most memorable matches played there took place in July 2012 when Heaton Stannington were beaten 4-0 by the Gabon national side. This warm-up match for the Olympics included an appearance by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The ground now boasts floodlights and a stand to complement the other facilities including a bar serving real ale. Much of the recent success is a result of the commitment and work of manager Derek Thompson and, until the end of last season, assistant manager Geoff Walker.

Alnwick Town 3-0 Heaton Stannington (2008) (From Northumberland Gazette) A brace from Tom Vickers and a cool finish from Gavin Keen guided Alnwick to their second successive league victory. The St James' Park triumph also enabled Town's long-serving chief, Mac Belisle, to celebrate his last ever home game in style. Alnwick opened the scoring in the 10th minute thanks to Keen. Polish ace Mati Halambiec pushed a through ball in to the path of Keen and the right midfielder kept his head to slot past Shaun Blackhouse in the Heaton goal. Town doubled their lead after 30 minutes in stunning style. A long ball was flicked on by Halambiec and Vickers, taking the ball under control with his knee, riffled in a volley from 25 yards. The hosts led 2-0 at the break but they added to their tally in the 67th minute. Hitman Vickers made it four goals in two games, tapping in from close range. The win takes Town to 24 points and sees the north Northumberland side avenge a 5-0 defeat against Heaton earlier in the season. Speaking after the game, Mac Belisle beamed: "It's nice to finish off with a win and it's great to see all the lads smiling again. "There's a great side here and I think next season there should be some silverware here. I wish the lads all the best." Team: B Brooks, C Henderson, P Yeddon, A Tate, B Murray, N Catlow, G Keen, G Patterson, M Halambiec, T Vickers, R Rakocinski. Subs D McCann, W Scott, A Turvey, M Openshaw, R Penamn. Match sponsor: Joshua Robinson Brown. FJT Cladding man-of-the-match: Tom Vickers.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Here at Alnwick Town, it is the continued support from local businesses that ensures we are able to compete in the Northern League. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses and supporters. Just taking a look around St James’ Park, you will see that we have a lot of advertising boards from both local and national businesses. This form of sponsorship gives your business coverage at every home game, and with local photographers attending our games, you also have the possibility of your business appearing in the local newspapers or on the club website. Match and Ball sponsors are something we’ve really been pushing the last year or so. You may not know, but referee and assistant costs for Northern League games are usually £100 a game. If we can get Match and Ball sponsors for every home game, it goes a long way to covering our costs, and in return we advertise your business on our social media platforms. Player and Pitch sponsorships are our cheapest options of sponsorship for supporting the club, and the players always love it when they know they get a sponsor. The costs received from these go a long way to covering the costs of producing the programme throughout the season for ink toners, paper, staples, labels etc. Every little helps! If you’d be interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities please get in touch with us. You can e-mail us info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk , send a message to our Facebook or Twitter accounts, or speak to a member of the committee who will point you in the right direction.
Pitch Sponsorship
This sponsorship option is more for the supporters of the club, who can show their support by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch for just £2.50. 43 sections are available to sponsor. Filling all of the spaces will raise £107.50 for the club. Pitch sponsors are shown here in the matchday programme, and also on our social media accounts throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being a pitch sponsor, please e-mail info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk or get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.
