Editor’s Column
Due to a match on Saturday, committee meeting Sunday, and the first letter draw on Monday, I’m having to prepare tonight’s programme a little earlier than usual so apologies for that. Welcome to tonight’s visitors Esh Winning, who picked up their first win of the season against Brandon United last Wednesday. We have already met this season on the opening day, with a 4-2 victory for Alnwick the outcome. Since then we’ve been consistently inconsistent! If we can get some sort of regular form going then I can see us having a successful season on the pitch. We’ve strengthened in defence this week with the return of Gary Bailes who has signed from Bedlington Terriers. Gary was here previously in our Alliance years helping the club to regain promotion back to the Northern League. We’ve got a number of injuries and players away which is making things a bit trickier than we would have hoped. With everybody fit and available we have a squad that will challenge pretty much every team in this league. I’m sure once the holiday season is over we’ll see the squad become bigger and more available again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------You may have noticed above I mentioned being successful on the pitch and I’ve said that for a reason. Off the pitch we need more hands to help out. On a personal level (get the violins out) I do the programme, website, social media, most of the I.T side of the club, match reports when the secretary isn’t at a game, letter draw, help out on the bar, etc etc. There are also a handful of others that dedicate a lot of time to the club, but we can’t do everything. If anyone is able, or knows someone that would be available to volunteer their services to work on the bar on a matchday / night then it would be greatly appreciated. If anyone can help with matchday hospitality during a game, help clean the changing rooms after a game, help maintain the pitch/ ground, or any job that they can think of please, please get in touch. Enjoy the game. Come on Alnwick! Cookie 472
Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1901, Alnwick St James’s moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions. The club competed in the North Northumberland League, Coquetdale League and Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. Clive Burn (pictured back row left) is the most successful manager in the clubs’ history, and Eric Hately (back row 2nd left) is one of the most decorated players in the clubs’ history. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 6th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. The club is moving forward, with new floodlights installed, our Junior section is moving ahead with plans for an expansion at Greensfield which could finally see the children of Alnwick have playing facilities fit for purpose. On This Day / Previous Report
Alnwick Town opened their 2016-17 Northern League season with a stirring second half performance to come from 2-0 down to win 4-2 at Esh Winning. The Northumbrians stunned their County Durham opponents with goals from Tony Brown, Liam Brooks, Josh Hay and Brad McClelland to secure the three points. Town manager Steve Mullen included his new signings and most of last season’s squad, while the home side started with a number of changes from last season following the arrival of a new management team. Alnwick made a slow and were second best in the opening period, and although they had equal possession, they were caught out by the pace of the home team, playing with two wide players all the game. Town could have gone in three down at the interval rather than the 2-0 scoreline, but thankfully they were a completely different team after the break, settling into their task to run Esh off the park. Esh applied early pressure and took the lead on eight minutes when a cross landed at the feet of James Huntley five yards out and he calmly side-footed home, with the Alnwick defence left looking at each other. Town’s first real chance fell on the quarter hour when Jamie Dixon squared to Brooks, only to see his shot pushed round the post by Esh keeper Mark Hodgson. But again Alnwick were lethargic and were caught out with a simple move when Brian Harrison scored from close range following a left wing cross, which Town keeper Dominic McMahon made a full length dive to cut out, only to see his effort fall to Brian Harrison, unmarked, to put them two up. By the half hour Alnwick were playing more as a team, and a move involving Hay and Brooks caught the home defence out, but again the shot went wide. Ross Gair went close for Town when he ghosted in between two defenders, but was unable to make the move count. But they nearly went three down when Ryan Burton missed an easy opportunity from only yards out. The second half started at a frantic pace, this time with Alnwick forcing the game. And it took only six minutes to make the breakthrough as a cross from the left found Brown 10 yards out and he sent a bullet header past the keeper. This was quickly followed with an attack down the left, but Brooks saw his bullet shot blocked at close range. It did not take long for a rampant Alnwick to draw level when Brooks scored. There was no let up for the under-pressure home defence, which cracked again two minutes later when a terrific three-man move created an opening for Hay to put Alnwick 3-2 ahead. Esh had no answer to the now fast moving Alnwick attack and dominant defence. Brooks went close when he out-jumped the home defence, but flicked his header inches wide. Despite Alnwick’s dominance, Esh Winning were still a threat, and they nearly capitalised on a slick move by Jonathan Yip and Burton, which Alnwick’s back line did well to block at the last second. That forward foray in the 70th minute proved to be Esh’s last serious attack. There followed a succession of chances for Alnwick, first when Hay set up Brent Aisbitt, whose effort scraped the wrong side of the post, then a Brown effort hitting the upright. Alnwick deservedly added a fourth near the end when a move down the left saw Hay and Gair create the chance for substitute McClelland to turn the defender and round off a superb second half display. Team: D McMahon, R Douglas, C Graham, D Lowes, T McPherson, R Gair, J Dixon (B McClelland), T Brown, J Hay (J Jackson), L Brooks, B Aisbitt Unused Sub: R Hodgson

Sponsorship Opportunities
Here at Alnwick Town, it is the continued support from local businesses that ensures we are able to compete in the Northern League. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses and supporters. Just taking a look around St James’ Park, you will see that we have a lot of advertising boards from both local and national businesses. This form of sponsorship gives your business coverage at every home game, and with local photographers attending our games, you also have the possibility of your business appearing in the local newspapers or on the club website. Match and Ball sponsors are something we’ve really been pushing the last year or so. You may not know, but referee and assistant costs for Northern League games are usually £100 a game. If we can get Match and Ball sponsors for every home game, it goes a long way to covering our costs, and in return we advertise your business on our social media platforms. Player and Pitch sponsorships are our cheapest options of sponsorship for supporting the club, and the players always love it when they know they get a sponsor. The costs received from these go a long way to covering the costs of producing the programme throughout the season for ink toners, paper, staples, labels etc. Every little helps! If you’d be interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities please get in touch with us. You can e-mail us info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk , send a message to our Facebook or Twitter accounts, or speak to a member of the committee who will point you in the right direction.
Pitch Sponsorship
This sponsorship option is more for the supporters of the club, who can show their support by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch for just £2.50. 43 sections are available to sponsor. Filling all of the spaces will raise £107.50 for the club. Pitch sponsors are shown here in the matchday programme, and also on our social media accounts throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being a pitch sponsor, please e-mail info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk or get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.
