Editor’s Column
Right, may as well get it out of the way now for those that haven’t somehow heard last weeks result. Northallerton Town 11-1 Alnwick Town. It’s our heaviest defeat in the Northern League, and from the records I have back to the 60’s our heaviest. We’ll probably never know if it’s our heaviest ever, but it’ll be close if not. I wasn’t there, I was enjoying a relaxing weekend away until I got some signal in the Lakes, and wished I hadn’t. The lads need to forget about it. It has happened, but instead of dwelling on in, learn from it. Why did it happen, and what can we do to fix it? The Billingham defeat in the cup is just that. Today is the day we need to put things right back in the league. Darlington RA have had a tough start picking up 10 points, but from playing them previously they are usually a big physical sides so we need to be up for the fight. No points come easy in this league, and teams will punish you if you show weakness. Get back on track today, sort ourselves out and lets please try to stop conceding preventable goals. We can all hold our hands up if someone smacks one into the top corner from 30 yards, but not tap-ins by not stopping crosses. And just to prove the Northern League is ruthless, we weren’t even the only team to lose 11-1 this week (Newcastle Benfield v Ryhope CW on Wednesday night). We’re also back in cup action again on Tuesday night against Heaton Stannington in the Senior Cup. It’s our last chance at a cup run this season, and a chance to draw one of the big-boys if we progress. Whatever happens, I just hope that we can start to restore some pride. There are people behind the scenes putting in a lot of hours at the club, and it’s a mixture of emotions when you see a team you care about get beat, and get beat heavily. Keep the faith. Cheers, Cookie 472.
Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1901, Alnwick St James’s moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions. The club competed in the North Northumberland League, Coquetdale League and Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. Clive Burn (pictured back row left) is the most successful manager in the clubs’ history, and Eric Hately (back row 2nd left) is one of the most decorated players in the clubs’ history. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 6th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. The club is moving forward, with new floodlights installed, our Junior section is moving ahead with plans for an expansion at Greensfield which could finally see the children of Alnwick have playing facilities fit for purpose. Opposition Information
The club was formed shortly after the First World War and started out in the Darlington & District League. Little is known of the club in the early seasons but in the 1919-20 season the club joined the Northern League. They found the going tough and after finishing second bottom in the 1924-25 season they returned to the Darlington & District League. The club went through possibly its most rewarding period in the 60’s & 70’s accumulating a number of honours. In 1964 they won the Darlington & District League and the League and League Cup double in 1968. Two years later they were North Riding Cup winners and runners-up in 1973. Then came the clubs greatest success, their triumph in the 1975 Durham Amateur Cup. In 1981 they almost repeated the feat, narrowly going down in the final. Darlington RA then joined the Teesside League and in the late 80’s were accepted into the Vaux Wearside League. In the 1990-91 season the club gained promotion from Division Two. The following season they narrowly escaped an immediate return to Division Two with a 4-1 win at Marske in the last game of the season. The club then hit financial trouble and in 1992 folded. The Club ceased to exist until the beginning of the third era. Martyn Jackson, while playing for CAS in the Darlington & District League decided to reform Darlington RA FC for the 1993-94 season using the players of CAS. David Woodcock joined Martyn as Manager for the season of 1998-99, and were rewarded for their hard work by winning the Darlington & District League. They were accepted into the Auckland District League for the season 1999-2000 and finished third in their first season, and won the R A Medals Trophy, not a bad feat for a team reformed only a few years before. The following season 2000-2001 saw probably the clubs greatest season. With a lot of new players and financial support the club was able to win the Auckland and District League on the last game of the season and pick up three other trophies, the club also reached the Semi-Final of the Durham Trophy only to be beaten narrowly 2-1. The club joined the Wearside League in 2001 finishing third and runners-up in the Durham Trophy, losing 1-0. At the start of the 2004-05 the decision was taken that all efforts would be put into gaining promotion into the Northern League. Work started on the ground with a band of very willing volunteers and very helpful local businesses. The lights went up first shortly followed by the new stand and slowly the ground started to take shape. The ground was completed in time and the work on the pitch was completed with a few games to spare and the eagerly awaited return to the Northern League was set.
Opposition Information
The Wearside league was won with 4 games to spare and a magnificent season was rounded off by winning the Sunderland Shipowners Cup against Stokesley at Brinkburn Road. 2005 marks a huge milestone for the club from humble beginnings. The first season back started badly with two defeats but the team slowly picked up momentum, after a victory away to Pontefract in the F.A. Vase they were rewarded with a home tie against Dunston where they were beaten after a replay but had the honour of having the biggest attendance in the country at Brinkburn Road in the second round. After a great unbeaten run in the League going back to November found themselves in a promotion place. More seats were put in the stand and another entrance to take the ground up to 1st Division standard and on the last day of the season a victory at Alnwick secured promotion. Unfortunately, the Club was unable to hold its own in the first division and was relegated back to the second division where they have remained since. Nick Harrison, joined forces with Mark Scott and Jamie Smith succeeding Jackson and Woodcock finishing 15th in 2010/11. This new management team pushed the team to finish 5th in 2011/12 with 73 points and they continued the excellent work into the 2012/13 season, again finishing 5th with an additional 5 points taking the season’s tally to 78. 2013/14 was more difficult and despite a respectable 12th place finish Nick Harrison stood down at the end of the campaign. The new management team of Warren Moncur and Paul Bowman took over at the start of the 2014/15 campaign and they guided the Club to a 15th place finish having been among the front runners until the turn of the year.

On This Day / Previous Report
Alnwick Town 6-4 Darlington Railway Athletic - 2015/16 Season On what was a cracking night for football, Alnwick were forced to make a couple of changes due to injuries. Dale Kennedy and Darren Riddell both failing late fitness tests, but they should be fine for the weekend tie away to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion. The home side were never behind, and got their first goal in the 10 th minute. A corner was tucked away at the far post by striker Jordan Miller, who was to have an eventful night. He got his 2nd of the game just 5 minutes later. A Kieran Hogg cross was headed goal wards by Miller, and despite the efforts of the Darlington defender on the line, he could only header the ball into the roof of the net. Alnwick were dominating, and almost made it 3 when Lewis Robson met the ball on the volley, but Gustard made a fine save. Robson almost got on the scoresheet in the 21st minute. Dominic Schiavetta was brought down right on the edge of the box, but the freekick went inches over. Darlington rarely threatened the home goal in the opening stages, and when Alnwick made it 3-0 it was no surprise. Schiavetta turned his man 20 yards out, moved the ball into space and put his shot right into the bottom corner. With half time looming, and Alnwick looking very comfortable, the away side got back into the game right on half time. Danny Lowes appeared to be pulled back by forward Jim Wilson, but with nothing given he carried on his run to slot the ball past Glasper. 3-1 at half time. 2nd half Alnwick regained the 3 goal advantage in the 53rd minute. Jordan Miller getting his hat-trick from a tap in. It was almost 4 straight after, but Schiavetta’s effort went into the side netting. What followed was sustained pressure from the away side as Alnwick seemed to lose concentration and shape with their lead. Hogg pulled back an attacker in the box, and Moncur scored from the penalty spot, with Glasper almost keeping it out. The yo-yo tie just kept on going though, with Miller getting his 4th of the game almost immediately after tapping home from the far post. 5-2 and end to end. Moncur got his 2nd of the game for Darlington to make it 5-3 in the 64th minute, flicking in at the near post. 3 substitutions were made in a couple of minutes after the goal to try and freshen some legs, with Hogg, Robson and Miller making way for Colley, Dixon and Jackson. Sub Jamie Dixon almost had an immediate impact, but his effort went across the face of goal. The game began to calm down (slightly), but Ryan Douglas cleared 2 efforts off the line as Alnwick were being pinned back in their own half. With the counter-attack looking likely for Alnwick on many occasions, but the final ball proving a stumbling block, the game looked like it had been put the bed in the 90th minute. Jon Colley burst into the box, his cross was deflected back into his path to slot home for his 1 st goal of the season. 6-3 and game over? Not quite, in the 7th minute of stoppage time, Jake Wood smashed home another for Darlington to make it 6-4. The referee’s whistle blew on what was quite frankly a mad game of football. Value for money without a doubt for the fans. Team: Glasper, Douglas, Hogg, Lowes, Macpherson, Gair, Robson, Brown, Schiavetta, Miller, Baker Subs: Colley (for Hogg), Dixon (for Robson), Jackson (for Miller). Sponsorship Opportunities
Here at Alnwick Town, it is the continued support from local businesses that ensures we are able to compete in the Northern League. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses and supporters. Just taking a look around St James’ Park, you will see that we have a lot of advertising boards from both local and national businesses. This form of sponsorship gives your business coverage at every home game, and with local photographers attending our games, you also have the possibility of your business appearing in the local newspapers or on the club website. Match and Ball sponsors are something we’ve really been pushing the last year or so. You may not know, but referee and assistant costs for Northern League games are usually £100 a game. If we can get Match and Ball sponsors for every home game, it goes a long way to covering our costs, and in return we advertise your business on our social media platforms. Player and Pitch sponsorships are our cheapest options of sponsorship for supporting the club, and the players always love it when they know they get a sponsor. The costs received from these go a long way to covering the costs of producing the programme throughout the season for ink toners, paper, staples, labels etc. Every little helps! If you’d be interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities please get in touch with us. You can e-mail us info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk , send a message to our Facebook or Twitter accounts, or speak to a member of the committee who will point you in the right direction.
Pitch Sponsorship
This sponsorship option is more for the supporters of the club, who can show their support by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch for just £2.50. 43 sections are available to sponsor. Filling all of the spaces will raise £107.50 for the club. Pitch sponsors are shown here in the matchday programme, and also on our social media accounts throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being a pitch sponsor, please e-mail info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk or get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.
