Editor’s Column
Welcome to today’s visitors from Easington, and to today’s match officials. I hope you had a safe journey up. Please make the most of the refreshments available in the clubhouse and enjoy the game. Tuesday night was disappointing really. The win sent Whickham top, but from the sidelines they didn’t really seem to cause us too many problems. We created half chances, but not enough to trouble to visiting keeper. On a windy night at St James’ Park, sometimes you just need to hit the target and the ball will do the rest, but the target just didn’t get hit. I’m sure I saw a wing mirror pay the price for one effort that went wide, and it didn’t look like a cheap car either! Prior to the Whickham game, we put in what was probably our best performance that I’ve seen against Bedlington Terriers. 3-0 win away from home, and it was thoroughly deserved. So we can do it! We just need to perform on a regular and consistent basis. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------You should notice that the lighting is coming along in the clubhouse and is almost complete. It’s been ongoing for a few months now but we are nearly there. I’ve never seen the place so bright now inside. As one person said, it’ll just show up the dirt, so we’ll need to keep it clean! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Don’t forget about the letter draw, it’s coming along nicely with the pot steadily increasing each month. You can play every week or just as and when you feel like it. Tickets available behind the bar. Profits go to the seniors and juniors of the club, so it’s a worthy cause. We’ve given out almost £400 in prize money so far. Nice little presents for the winners in the run up to Christmas! Enjoy the game. Come on Alnwick! Cheers, Cookie 472
Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1901, Alnwick St James’s moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions. The club competed in the North Northumberland League, Coquetdale League and Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. Clive Burn (pictured back row left) is the most successful manager in the clubs’ history, and Eric Hately (back row 2nd left) is one of the most decorated players in the clubs’ history. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 6th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. The club is moving forward, with new floodlights installed, our Junior section is moving ahead with plans for an expansion at Greensfield which could finally see the children of Alnwick have playing facilities fit for purpose. Opposition Information
Formed in 1913 the club had to wait until the 1930s for their first honours which came with five league championships and five cups. In 1955 the club made it to the First Round proper of the FA Cup for the only time, when they played Tranmere Rovers at the Welfare Ground in front of a crowd of 4,500, going down a credible 2–0, In 1964 the club was disbanded but nine years later were reformed, and quickly won three league championships. A new era in began with a merger with fellow Easington football club Easington Rangers who then were successful playing in the Houghton and District League. The club reached the fourth round of the FA Vase in the 1982–83 season after forcing Percy Main Amateurs into a replay after a 1– 1 draw at home, before going down 2–0 in the replay. The club applied to join the Northern League shortly after but were initially rejected because their main stand was not finished. With the situation rectified the club was elected to that league's Second Division where they won promotion in their first season, scoring more than 100 goals and winning all of their last 9 games to claim the runners–up spot behind Newcastle Blue Star. The most recent FA Cup success came in the 1987–88 season in the third qualifying round where the club defeated Newcastle Blue Star 3–0 to progress to the fourth qualifying round, before being knocked out by now Conference National side Northwich Victoria, with the match ending 3–0. The following season Colliery stayed in the Northern League Division One and made their way to the league cup final where they were beaten by Spennymoor United. In 1988 the club reached the final of the Durham FA Challenge Cup but were beaten by Bishop Auckland at Roker Park.
Opposition Information
In the 2006–07 season the club finished eighth in the Northern Football Alliance Premier Division, with Tom Orchard their leading goalscorer with 16 goals and also with 18 assists. They switched from the Northern Football Alliance to the Wearside Football League before the 2007–08 season. The FA Vase campaign was a disappointing one for Colliery, going out in the second qualifying round to Thackley, beaten 4–1 on 22 September 2007 with a former Middlesbrough youth player scoring the goal for Easington Colliery. Following a second-place finish in 2014-15, Easington Colliery's application for promotion to the Northern League was accepted.

Bedlington Terriers 0 - 3 Alnwick Town (24.09.2016 - Northern League) 3 points and a clean sheet. Yes this is Alnwick Town's match report you are reading! After conceding 16 goals in their previous 2 games, Alnwick held firm against Northumbrian rivals Bedlington Terriers to bring back 3 points up the A1. A number of changes were made again to the starting eleven, foreign trips and injuries paved the way for starting places for Danny Lowes, Lee Dundas, James Jackson and Dom Schiavetta. Alnwick came up against a Bedlington side fielding 2 former players in goalkeeper Dan Mullen, and centre-back Kieran Egen. Both players would have a busy first half, with Alnwick dominating play and creating the better chances. Liam Brooks and Tony Brown both had chances go narrowly wide within the first 10 minutes, and it would take Bedlington 15 minutes to regsiter their first effort on target, a free kick well held by McMahon. Schiavetta headed wide from Brooks' cross in the 26th minute, and then Jackson had a great chance shortly after, but his effort was saved by the feed of Mullen. As the half appeared to be slipping away from Alnwick despite numerous chances, the deadlock was finally broken just before the break. Matty Graham and Darren Riddell combined well down the right wing, with Riddell crossing for Brooks to head down into the bottom corner. Finally Alnwick's efforts paid off. Two early second half subs saw Riddell and Graham replaced by Giles and Aisbitt. Alnwick were still creating, with McMahon having little to do in goal for Alnwick. Efforts from Schiavetta and Brown were deflected wide and over, and Liam Brooks could have sealed it but fired over after good hassling by Jackson. It looked as though those missed chances could come back to haunt Alnwick, and McMahon had to pull off a fine save to preserve Alnwick's lead. Bodies were being chucked on the line to keep this clean sheet, with the players desperate to make amends following the recent heavy defeats. With time ticking, the injured Jackson was replaced by young Jake Morrison. Brooks and Morrison combined, and Brooks' effort was saved through the legs of Mullen. The Bedlington goal led a charmed life, but it wouldn't hold on. In the 90th minutes, Alnwick scored a cracker. Lee Dundas chased a lost ball, winning the tackle and playing inside to Tony Brown, who dinked the ball forward for substitute Brent Aisbitt to lob Mullen in the Bedlington goal to give the away side a 2 goal lead. The win was then sealed in style by Jake Morrison, who stuck low and hard into the bottom corner from 25 yards. A thoroughly deserved win for the away side in front of the travelling fans in the main stand. It could and probably should have been more, but it is 3 points and a clean sheet that Alnwick will gladly take. Team: McMahon, Riddell (Giles), Dundas, Lowes D, Macpherson, Gair, Graham M (Aisbitt), Brown, Brooks, Jackson (Morrison), Schiavetta. Unused Subs: Lowes J, Straughan R

Sponsorship Opportunities
Here at Alnwick Town, it is the continued support from local businesses that ensures we are able to compete in the Northern League. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses and supporters. Just taking a look around St James’ Park, you will see that we have a lot of advertising boards from both local and national businesses. This form of sponsorship gives your business coverage at every home game, and with local photographers attending our games, you also have the possibility of your business appearing in the local newspapers or on the club website. Match and Ball sponsors are something we’ve really been pushing the last year or so. You may not know, but referee and assistant costs for Northern League games are usually £100 a game. If we can get Match and Ball sponsors for every home game, it goes a long way to covering our costs, and in return we advertise your business on our social media platforms. Player and Pitch sponsorships are our cheapest options of sponsorship for supporting the club, and the players always love it when they know they get a sponsor. The costs received from these go a long way to covering the costs of producing the programme throughout the season for ink toners, paper, staples, labels etc. Every little helps! If you’d be interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities please get in touch with us. You can e-mail us info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk , send a message to our Facebook or Twitter accounts, or speak to a member of the committee who will point you in the right direction.
Pitch Sponsorship
This sponsorship option is more for the supporters of the club, who can show their support by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch for just £2.50. 43 sections are available to sponsor. Filling all of the spaces will raise £107.50 for the club. Pitch sponsors are shown here in the matchday programme, and also on our social media accounts throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being a pitch sponsor, please e-mail info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk or get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.
