Editor’s Column
Well the Wembley dream is over for another year. Newcastle Benfield proved too much for us last weekend, quicker and fitter all over the pitch, and pretty deadly in front of goal. We had a couple of chances to at least get on the scoresheet more than once, but it wasn’t to be. Hopefully the lads saw the level of opposition that they will face in future years, and possibly in future cup competitions. Before the FA Vase defeat, we came out on top against Esh Winning, quite comfortably in the end 5-1. 5 different scorers, Bailesy given one of the goals as no one likes an own goal. It’s been an on and off start to the season. Win followed by defeat followed by win etc etc. If we can just get a bit of consistency going then I’m sure we’ll have a good season. With the squad we have, once everyone is available for selection we’ll be spoilt for choice. As long as everyone knows they’ll get their chance as some won’t be available every week. It’s better to have 20 players to choose from rather than scraping by every week with 12 or 13. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------We’ve had our first winner of the letter draw on Monday. G F S was the winning selection, prize of £190. If you’d like to take part, tickets are available at the bar. Play every week in the book or just take part as a one off. As a club we’d just appreciate it if you take part. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------And a big thanks to John English and Des Lamb who have been looking after the ground following the departure of Ian Hogg as Groundsman and Vice Chairman. Ian is vice captain at the gold club this year, to become captain next year. Thanks to Ian for all of his work at the ground over the last few years, and also for the tea hut which has now closed. Refreshments are now available in the clubhouse on a matchday. Enjoy the game. Come on Alnwick! Cheers, Cook
Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1901, Alnwick St James’s moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions. The club competed in the North Northumberland League, Coquetdale League and Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. Clive Burn (pictured back row left) is the most successful manager in the clubs’ history, and Eric Hately (back row 2nd left) is one of the most decorated players in the clubs’ history. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 6th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. The club is moving forward, with new floodlights installed, our Junior section is moving ahead with plans for an expansion at Greensfield which could finally see the children of Alnwick have playing facilities fit for purpose. Opposition Information
Blyth Town Football Club was first established back in 1995 originating as a junior football club with three younger male teams; under 10’s, under 11’s and under 13’s. Continuing with the male team theme it expanded to five teams and as the club progressed, more and more showed an interest in joining. Finally, the club introduced a brand new girls’ team in 1999 which became extremely popular and grew massively throughout the upcoming years. Blyth Town hit its highest point when it introduced adult football. Although the topic of an adult football club was widely discussed, the Club felt it wasn’t a necessity due to the other teams progressing from strength to strength. It only became a reality when the girls’ team became too old and the club struggled to enter them into any league once they reached the age of 14 so they were entered into a Ladies League – resulting in the launch of an adult section in the 2002/03 season for both genders. After 2000, all of Blyth Town’s teams played in multiple leagues and were hugely successful in doing so. In December 2002 the Club received the accolade of ‘Community Club’ for the F.A and was the first club in Northumberland to receive this recognition. Previously, only 180 clubs had achieved this out of 43,000+ nationwide. With its new status, the Club approached the Council with a view to obtaining land and attract funding from the Football Foundation. The site at South Newsham was suggested as the development had around £300K in developer’s money earmarked for sports and recreation. Shortly after, the Club received funds from a development fund and a Football Foundation bid to use for a £1 million refurbishment and development of the South Newsham facilities. Last season saw Blyth Town FC First Team win the Northern Alliance Premier Division for the third time in a row working with some of the best managers and coaches in the area. To enable the First Team to accept its promotion into the EBAC Northern League this season, Blyth Town FC First Team received a £500,000 private investment to help build a new flood-lit training ground, upgrade the pitch and training rooms to Northern League standards as well as the funds providing further improvements to the clubhouse facilities for the local community and visiting teams to enjoy.

Alnwick Town 3-3 Blyth Town (Courtesy of Northumberland Gazette) Re/Max Northern Alliance, Premier Division (Wednesday, August 27 2008). A dramatic last-gasp Tony Brown strike capped off a stunning fight back from Alnwick Town last night. The St James' Park side battled back from 3-0 down to level the scores in the 88th minute. Brown fired in from the edge of the box to grab a point for the black 'n' whites. Bryan Murray began the fight back before substitute Ben Keenan scored from the spot to give Alnwick a vital lifeline. And with two minutes left on the clock Brown struck. And it was nothing short of what Alnwick deserved. The hosts bombarded Blyth Town's goal throughout the 90 minutes and were unlucky not to snatch all three points. But things started badly for the home side with Blyth's Christopher Taylor putting the visitor's oneup after eight minutes. Alnwick could have levelled, but for two last ditch tackles from Blyth's Michael Robinson. And the hosts were denied what looked to be a clear penalty when Brown was chopped in the box. Moments later Ben Webster thought he had equalised for the hosts but his goal was disallowed for a foul. Blyth capitalised, striking twice within five minutes. Hitman Patrick Allen scored the first of two goals after 39 minutes, lifting the ball superbly over Alnwick keeper Brian Brooks. The pacey number 11 then broke clear of the defence and slotted the ball neatly past Brooks for his second, putting Blyth three-up before the break. Cue Alnwick's fight back. Murray grabbed Alnwick's first after 66 minutes. Blyth keeper Scott Earle's punch fell into the path of Murray who cooly lifted the ball over the stranded keeper. Alnwick could have made it two but Webster saw his fizzing volley crash against the post. The hosts did double their tally in the 82nd minute. Substitute Ian Common was failed in the box by Nathan Lajevard and Keenan slotted home from the spot. And with just two minutes remaining Brown riffled an effort from the edge of the box to grab a welldeserved point for Alnwick. Alnwick Town: Brian Brooks, Bryan Murray, Neil Catlow, Gary Bailes, Ross Young, Tony Brown, Scott McMullen, Ben Webster, James Swordy, Richard Brown, Paul Yeadon. Subs: Ben Keenan, Craig Henderson, Ian Common, James Lang, Andrew Tate.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Here at Alnwick Town, it is the continued support from local businesses that ensures we are able to compete in the Northern League. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses and supporters. Just taking a look around St James’ Park, you will see that we have a lot of advertising boards from both local and national businesses. This form of sponsorship gives your business coverage at every home game, and with local photographers attending our games, you also have the possibility of your business appearing in the local newspapers or on the club website. Match and Ball sponsors are something we’ve really been pushing the last year or so. You may not know, but referee and assistant costs for Northern League games are usually £100 a game. If we can get Match and Ball sponsors for every home game, it goes a long way to covering our costs, and in return we advertise your business on our social media platforms. Player and Pitch sponsorships are our cheapest options of sponsorship for supporting the club, and the players always love it when they know they get a sponsor. The costs received from these go a long way to covering the costs of producing the programme throughout the season for ink toners, paper, staples, labels etc. Every little helps! If you’d be interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities please get in touch with us. You can e-mail us info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk , send a message to our Facebook or Twitter accounts, or speak to a member of the committee who will point you in the right direction.
Pitch Sponsorship
This sponsorship option is more for the supporters of the club, who can show their support by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch for just £2.50. 43 sections are available to sponsor. Filling all of the spaces will raise £107.50 for the club. Pitch sponsors are shown here in the matchday programme, and also on our social media accounts throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being a pitch sponsor, please e-mail info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk or get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.
