A Brief History of Alnwick Town AFC Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. Back in the Northern League, the club finished in 16th place, and achieved Grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League, meaning the club would be competing in the F.A Vase and Senior Cup once again. With plans for the future on the horizon, the club can hopefully look forward to a return of the glory years once again.

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents BRANDON UNITED. Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding and Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! Finally, I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Programme Notes - The Editor It’s a difficult time for a programme editor. The weather means that I am producing programmes that will more often than not never be used. There isn’t anything I or anyone else I do about it. All it does mean, is that we will once again have a backlog towards the end of the season. At the moment, we have plenty of midweek spaces available, but as more games fall victim to the rain (we haven’t even had the snow/ frost yet) these spaces will be filled quickly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Today we welcome Brandon United to St James’ Park, who are also at the wrong end of the table and looking to pick up some much needed points. In last season’s encounter here, we were 2-0 down and looking dead and buried, with relegation a very real possibility. Step forward Bryan Murray. One man grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. In fact, the game isn’t doing him justice. He grabbed the club by the scruff of the neck, and somehow rescued a point for us with his only 2 goals of the season. From what I can remember, we came a whisker away from actually taking all 3 points. As it was, the point gained was a big one, and helped to push us over the line and keep us off the bottom spot. Some drunken eejit may have also joined the celebrations on the pitch, but we’ll not get into that! --------------------------------------------------------------------------At the time of writing, tonight is the first of 4 home games on the bounce. Home support is vital as all income through the gate is a big part in the club’s finances. We’re exploring a couple of possible ideas for next season to try and boost numbers. At the minute, Alnwick Town Juniors get in for free, with half price admission for a paying accompanying adult. Initiatives across the country involving local schools have proven successful, so hopefully we can follow suit. As an outsider looking in elsewhere, Celtic Nation have made massive progress both on and off the field. Attendances were previously around 20-30 per game. Now they are in the hundreds, and climbing at a phenomenal rate. We may not get hundreds every week, but to at least hit 3 figures a few times a season would be great. Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season BRIAN BROOKS GOALKEEPER 31 DAN MULLEN

The 472 Player of the Season for 2012/13, Brooka played a massive part in keeping the club in the Northern League. One of the club’s longest serving players and a genuine role model for the younger lads coming through. SPONSORED BY: WESTERHOPE COUNTRY LIVING

Dan has joined the club this summer and has made a promising start, keeping his first clean sheet in the victory against Northallerton Town.

Danny will be hoping for an injury-free season, having had lengthy spells out following games against Esh Winning. He has a different haircut every week, at the moment though he’s looking a bit bald on top. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hillsy has returned to the club following his big money move to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion last season. Still a favourite of the programme editor due to his Sunderland roots, Hillsy adds some much needed experience at the back. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Tom Mac has taken over as captain this season. Loves the banter at the club, especially the away days involving Christmas jumpers and bribing the judges in Brampton. SPONSORED BY: JOHN PROUDLOCK BUILDING CONTRACTOR 01669 621 141 Jake will be hoping for more first team action this year, and following the retirement of the club’s long serving left back this could be his year. Younger brother of Danny, with a lot more hair on top. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hoggy has become a permanent fixture in the first team, switching to a more central role, but is still more than capable on the wing or at full back. A danger when he runs with the ball at defenders. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS

Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season You’ll often find Kiddy on the treatment table due to being made of glass. Cruciate ligament injuries and dislocated shoulders are just part of the game apparently. Follow him on twitter @chriskidd4 SPONSORED BY: TOM MCKIE Muzza. Club Captain. Legend. Hates a booking. Heart and soul of the club. Never stops running. Caused a 1 man pitch invasion last season with 2 late goals against Brandon United. It was worth it. SPONSORED BY: PETER ROPER The first player to score 20 goals in the Northern League for the club since James Swordy. Tony arguably kept the club up last season and scored some crackers in the process. A hat-trick against Birtley rounded off his season. SPONSORED BY: ALLAN TAIT Kev has returned to the club again following stints of kicking and punching lumps out of others in a cage. He’s a canny lad. Will never back out of a tackle, and sure to give Muzza a run for his money this year for the ‘Bad Boy’ award.

Tom is back in first team action following a successful cricket season (again) and also the birth of his first child. Lots of Northern League experience and a nuisance to defenders. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

Described by his former club North Shields as a ‘legend’, Keith has a phenomenal scoring record in the Northern League, and he has finally come home! A big signing for the club, Keith bagged a brace on debut against Esh Winning. SPONSORED BY: ALAN BURN Minnow’s 2nd season with the club and he’ll be hoping to get more action this year from the starting line-up. Scored a couple of vital goals last season, lets hope for a few more again this season. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

TeamDinga Darts and Charity Cycle Team are proud to support Alnwick Town Football Club

For only £2.50 per section, you can help support Alnwick Town AFC financially for the 2013-2014 season by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch.

Each section is roughly the size of a dugout in the illustration above, and you can use it to advertise a business, charity, or if you like simply your own name. You may purchase as many sections as you wish. If we can fill each section of the pitch, we will raise £205.00. Although this may not seem like much in terms or running a football club, every little helps. The money raised would almost cover the photocopying costs for the inserts of the matchday programme for the entire season. Contact us atafc1879@btconnect.com or on Twitter @alnwicktownafc for details. Current Total Raised: £102.50, with 50% of sections taken.

Our Visitors‌ Brandon United Brandon United were originally formed as a Sunday morning side called Rostrons, the name of the waste paper company where most of the founders worked. They began by playing in the Durham & District Sunday League in 1968/69, Joining the Third Division and gradually played their way up to the First Division. They were basically local lads, however the inclusion of Northern League and Wearside League players turned the club into one of the most powerful Sunday football sides in the North East. From 1968/69 until 1976/77 they were First Division champions four times, Durham County FA. Sunday Cup winners three times, then the ultimate, F.A. Sunday Cup winners in 1975/76, defeating Evergreen 2-1. One of Brandon United's highlights came in 1979/80 when entering the F.A. Cup for the first time, they reached the first round proper, on the way taking care of Northern League opponents Spennymoor United, Tow Law Town, South Bank and North Shields. In the first round proper, Brandon were beaten 3-0 by Football League opponents Bradford City, in a game played at Spennymoor. The club joined the Wearside League in 1981/82, winning the Sunderland Shipowners Cup. The following season they reached the quarter finals of the F.A- Vase and repeated the same the following season. On the 6th June 1983, Brandon United's dream came true when they were admitted to the Northern League's Second Division. United won the Second Division title the following season.. In 1988 United once again reached the first round proper of the F.A. Cup playing Doncaster Rovers twice at Belle Vue before losing 1-2. In 1992/93 Brandon played Seaham Red Star in the League Cup final at Bedford Terrace home of Billingham Town, only to lose after a penalty shoot out. At the start of the 1998/1999 season Brandon appointed Ken Lindoe as manager and the clubs fortunes began to change. Ken had won the Wearside League at Annfield Plain and, with the Plain unable to move up to the Northern League, he decided to use his skills at lowly Brandon. He brought a number of players with him to Brandon and started the team rebuilding job. He quickly assembled a team that could compete in the league and also play good attacking football. In season 2000/2001 he led the team into Division One as champions. A season of consolidation then followed, but with further strengthening of the team came Brandon United’s finest moment; the League Championship was attained in 2002/2003 and the club were Champions of the Northern League. The following seasons until the present day have been rather tumultuous for Brandon United both on and off the pitch. The couple of years following the League Championship saw management, players and committee all leave the club as finances stretched the club to breaking point. A few seasons of flirting with relegation finally happened and the club were relegated back to the 2nd division at the end of the 2005/ season. A bit of stability was required and following a further season of consolidation Adam Furness joined the club as assistant to BJ Heijmanns and the club again started to rebuild. Although results on the field were poor this really was the start of the club getting back on its feet football wise. The club finished bottom of the league but, with no relegation taking effect, it survived to play again in the Northern League. Younger players with a seasons experience behind them and the recruitment of some senior and more experienced players meant the club finished a very respectable 6th in 2008/09. Relative success caught the eye of other clubs however, and many players left the following season, most to 1st Division teams. The club has had to re-build its squad again. With a junior and reserve set up the envy of many other clubs, young players have progressed through the ranks to make first team football at Brandon United. Following another uncertain season in 2010/11, manager Vince Kirkup came in and assisted by Wayne Brandon were able to keep the club going. Season 2011/12 was far better with the club securing more wins / points and goals than for many seasons. Off the field, an ageing stadium continues to cause concern but steps are being taken and it is a very different Welfare Ground today from what it was just a few short years ago. A new perimeter fence kept out the scourge of vandalism that had blighted the club for so long. Grants, tirelessly worked on by the chairman and others, came through and the main stand was rebuilt and now seats over 100. A new hard standing now goes all the way round the pitch and there is terracing in front of the main stand. We start the 2013/14 season with fresh optimism but with feet firmly on the ground knowing what is still expected both on and off the pitch. The work on the ground is not complete and funds are being sought to improve it further. On the pitch reserve and junior players make the step up to the first team and they are joined by new comers to the club as we strive to improve on last season.

Previous Encounter Alnwick Town 2-2 Brandon United Report Courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette It could be the defining moment in Alnwick Town’s season; the spark needed to ignite a remarkable escape act. As the clock ticked into the 95th minute, the ball left the boot of captain Bryan Murray and rifled into the far corner. There it was. A last-gasp equaliser which might prove to be the difference between Northern League and Northern Alliance football next term. While it snatched a point – a crucial point no less – for Town, it was more than that. Mentally, it will no doubt feel like a win, and could provide the springboard Town need to finally leap away from the Northern League, Division Two trapdoor. It also showed there’s life in the old dog yet. Enough life to fight to the very end, whether that’s over 90 minutes, or over the course of the season. That it was captain Murray who netted both goals in Tuesday night’s comeback was fitting. He epitomises what this Town team is about – heart, desire and fight. And that will be needed in abundance if Town are to haul themselves away from relegation. Make no mistake, a defeat against Brandon United would have been a big blow. And for 79 minutes, bottom-of-the-table Town were heading for their fifth straight loss in all competitions. A brace from United’s Stephen Moody, with a goal in each half, had put the visitors 2-0 up. If Mark Bell had found the net, instead of crashing his shot against the post shortly after Moody’s second, then it would have been game over. But Town grabbed a lifeline with little over 10 minutes of normal time remaining. A corner found Murray in the box and he fired home a low shot. Then came the equaliser. A deep ball in from Kieran Hogg found Murray at the far post and the skipper volleyed in, prompting wild celebrations. It was no more than Town deserved, on the balance of the final 10 minutes or so at least. Before that, it was a game of very few chances.

In the first half, Alnwick keeper Brian Brooks tipped over a shot from distance while Town’s hard-working Dan Thompson beat his marker and broke into the box, but his shot hit the side netting. Chris Moffet went close for Town in the second period but his dipping effort went just over. And there was that Bell chance for the visitors. But Murray’s first goal set up a frantic finale and Town went close to equalising through Tom Vickers, Dale Kennedy, Tony Brown and Moffet. Just when it looked as though a point had escaped them, Murray struck at the death. How important that could prove to be. Alnwick: B Brooks, A Makin (D Lowes), N Catlow, C Kidd (D Kennedy), T McPherson, B Murray, J Colley (K Hogg), T Brown, D Thompson, T Vickers, C Moffet. Subs: B Keenan, G Patterson.
