A Brief History of Alnwick Town AFC Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. Back in the Northern League, the club finished in 16th place, and achieved Grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League, meaning the club would be competing in the F.A Vase and Senior Cup once again. With plans for the future on the horizon, the club can hopefully look forward to a return of the glory years once again.

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents CHESTER-LE-STREET TOWN. Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding and Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! Finally, I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Programme Notes - The Editor You can’t say you don’t get your monies worth at St James’ Park mind. In our last game against Willington there were 4 goals (2-2), 3 red cards, off the pitch incidents and a last minute equaliser. We had started the game very well. Some of the football being played was the best I had seen this season. It’s just a shame we didn’t capitalise on the early dominance, having to go into the break at 1-1. With 3 red cards early in the 2nd half, it was always going to turn into an open game, and with the man advantage you’d have expected Alnwick to get the 3 points. Football isn’t that simple though, and we were caught on the break. Luckily we managed to equalise pretty much straight away. 2 points dropped? Probably. It’s another point on the board though edging us towards safety. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Congratulations to Alnwick Town Reserves (ATR) on reaching the Bluefin Group Bill Gardner Trophy Final, following a 2-1 victory against Blyth Isabella. Ryan Taylor put ATR ahead, and Isabella equalised late on. With extra time looking likely, Peter Murray curled a peach into the top corner to send the home side into their first cup final since the North Northumberland league days. I’ve not seen as much of the Reserves this season as I normally do, but they were deserved winners. It was good to see a few of the lads on the fringes of the 1st team put in a good performance. Strength in depth is never a bad thing. Best of luck in the final lads, I’ll hopefully be there to see it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Our programme shop will soon be up and running in the clubhouse. I’ve managed to sell quite a few programme online over the past year, but in all honesty I simply don’t have the time or space at home for the amount of programmes that we now have. Donations are still gratefully accepted, and every penny made goes towards the running of the club. Programmes in the clubhouse will be sold at either 50p or £1 (boxes priced). Any programmes worth more I’ll sell online to try and generate as much income as possible for the club. Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season BRIAN BROOKS GOALKEEPER

DAN MULLEN

The 472 Player of the Season for 2012/13, Brooka played a massive part in keeping the club in the Northern League. One of the club’s longest serving players and a genuine role model for the younger lads coming through. SPONSORED BY: WESTERHOPE COUNTRY LIVING Dan has joined the club this summer and has made a promising start, keeping his first clean sheet in the victory against Northallerton Town. Not for sale.

‘OOMPA LOOMPA’ as the 472 song goes, Alex has become a permanent fixture in the defence at the club. Now that Marc Nixon has left, he has officially been crowned the club’s tallest player. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS Danny will be hoping for an injury-free season, having had lengthy spells out following games against Esh Winning. He has a different haircut every week, at the moment though he’s looking a bit bald on top. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hillsy has returned to the club following his big money move to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion last season. Still a favourite of the programme editor due to his Sunderland roots, Hillsy adds some much needed experience at the back. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Tom Mac has taken over as captain this season. Loves the banter at the club, especially the away days involving Christmas jumpers and bribing the judges in Brampton. SPONSORED BY: JOHN PROUDLOCK BUILDING CONTRACTOR 01669 621 141 Jake will be hoping for more first team action this year, and following the retirement of the club’s long serving left back this could be his year. Younger brother of Danny, with a lot more hair on top. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hoggy has become a permanent fixture in the first team, switching to a more central role, but is still more than capable on the wing or at full back. A danger when he runs with the ball at defenders. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS

Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season You’ll often find Kiddy on the treatment table due to being made of glass. Cruciate ligament injuries and dislocated shoulders are just part of the game apparently. Follow him on twitter @chriskidd4 SPONSORED BY: TOM MCKIE Muzza. Club Captain. Legend. Hates a booking. Heart and soul of the club. Never stops running. Caused a 1 man pitch invasion last season with 2 late goals against Brandon United. It was worth it. SPONSORED BY: PETER ROPER The first player to score 20 goals in the Northern League for the club since James Swordy. Tony arguably kept the club up last season and scored some crackers in the process. A hat-trick against Birtley rounded off his season. SPONSORED BY: ALLAN TAIT Kev has returned to the club again following stints of kicking and punching lumps out of others in a cage. He’s a canny lad. Will never back out of a tackle, and sure to give Muzza a run for his money this year for the ‘Bad Boy’ award.

Tom is back in first team action following a successful cricket season (again) and also the birth of his first child. Lots of Northern League experience and a nuisance to defenders. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

Described by his former club North Shields as a ‘legend’, Keith has a phenomenal scoring record in the Northern League, and he has finally come home! A big signing for the club, Keith bagged a brace on debut against Esh Winning. SPONSORED BY: ALAN BURN Minnow’s 2nd season with the club and he’ll be hoping to get more action this year from the starting line-up. Scored a couple of vital goals last season, lets hope for a few more again this season. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

Dale will be hoping for an injury free season after complications from the previous season’s injury. Will run himself into the ground and not shy to put a foot in. Big chance this year. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

TeamDinga Darts and Charity Cycle Team are proud to support Alnwick Town Football Club

For only £2.50 per section, you can help support Alnwick Town AFC financially for the 2013-2014 season by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch.

Each section is roughly the size of a dugout in the illustration above, and you can use it to advertise a business, charity, or if you like simply your own name. You may purchase as many sections as you wish. If we can fill each section of the pitch, we will raise £205.00. Although this may not seem like much in terms or running a football club, every little helps. The money raised would almost cover the photocopying costs for the inserts of the matchday programme for the entire season. Contact us atafc1879@btconnect.com or on Twitter @alnwicktownafc for details. Current Total Raised: £105.00, with 51.22% of sections taken.

Our Visitors‌ Chester-le-Street The club was founded in 1972 when a group of enthusiasts got together in a local public house and formed a football team which was called Chester-le-Street Garden Farm after the pub in which the idea germinated. The club entered the Newcastle City Amateur League that same year and played on a pitch in Low Fell because none were available in Chester-le-Street. However, after one season, they were allotted a pitch at the Riverside, Chester-le-Street which was to be their home until 1977. In 1975 the Cestrians joined the Washington League, winning the Championship, the Durham Minor Cup and the Washington Aged Miners Cup. By then flourishing, the team moved to the Sacriston C.W. ground in 1977 and were admitted into the Wearside League. The following years, they changed their name to Chester-le-Street Town Football Club. Over the next few years, the club won the Wearside League title and the Monkwearmouth Cup on two occasions. In 1980 the club moved to what is still its present home at Chester Moor. The old Colliery Welfare Ground only had dressing rooms and a perimeter fence. Over £100,000 was spent bringing the ground up to Northern League standards. A stand seating 160 and covered terracing were built. In recent years, new floodlights have been erected and new dressing rooms were built in 2000. The club was admitted into the Northern League in 1983 and won the Second Division Championship at their first attempt. Their best run in the FA Vase came in 1985 when they reached the Fifth Round only to lose to eventual runners-up Fleetwood Town in a second replay. Since then they have been relegated twice, the last time in 1996-97 and they again won the Second Division Championship the following season. The club is proud to call itself a family club, catering to the needs of the district by providing football for all. They currently run a successful junior side, two of which have made the move to the professional game. In 2003-04 they reached the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup. Several of that team have already progressed to the first team. Recently the club joined up with Chester-le-Street Riverside FC and now run sides from Under 8 up to Under 18 level competing in various junior leagues. The club also now has a Ladies section after linking up with Birtley Phoenix Ladies who now play at Chester Moor under the Chester-le-Street Town name.

Previous Encounter Alnwick Town 4-1 Chester-le-Street Report courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette Two goals from Tony Brown helped inspire Alnwick Town to a priceless 4-1 win over Chester-le-Street, as his side closed the gap at the bottom of the table. Brown opened the scoring with a close-range header before hammering in a 30-yard freekick after 87 minutes. Daniel Thompson and Stephen Wood also found the net on Saturday as the St James’ Park side sealed their third league win of the season. Town remain bottom of Northern League Division Two, but the victory took them to within four points of relegation rivals Horden CW and six points from safety. Before the match, Town held a minute’s silence in memory of former committee member Bobby Dodds, who passed away earlier this month. The black ‘n’ white’s fine performance was a fitting tribute to the sports-mad 75-year-old. With just four minutes on the clock, Town took the lead when Brown headed in from a Kieran Hogg cross. Brown nearly grabbed a second with a delicate chip, but his audacious effort went just over. Chester-le-Street’s first effort was from long range. Connor Graham’s rising shot was pushed over by Brian Brooks. Town went two-up on 35 minutes. The lively Hogg was once again the provider, this time teeing up Thompson at the far post. The visitors went close to reducing the deficit soon after. Graham’s header was saved by Brooks before George Convery cleared off the line. Town went further ahead five minutes before half-time. A combined move from Hogg and Alex Makin found Wood who broke clear and curled the ball past the keeper to give Town a 3-0 lead at the interval. Chester-le-Street went more attacking in the second half and the tactical switch nearly paid off a minute after the break, but for Brooks pushing the ball onto the bar and Makin clearing off the line. The visitors did get their goal on 55 minutes when Lewis Lynch scored from 10 yards. Town may have feared history repeating itself – having thrown away a 3-0 lead earlier in the season to lose 4-3. But there was no such repeat this time round. Town’s resolve may have been put to the test though if Kieron McDonald’s shot had found the net, instead of finding the inform Brooks, who pushed the ball over the bar. But from then on, Town dominated. Thompson and Ben Keenan both went close to scoring the homeside’s fourth. That honour was left to Brown, whose fine free-kick rounded off a vital win. Alnwick: Brooks, Makin, Convery, Murray, McPherson, Hills, Moffat, Brown, Thompson (Keenan), Wood (Baston), Hogg (Colley). Sub: Kennedy.
