A Brief History of Alnwick Town AFC Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. Back in the Northern League, the club finished in 16th place, and achieved Grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League, meaning the club would be competing in the F.A Vase and Senior Cup once again. With plans for the future on the horizon, the club can hopefully look forward to a return of the glory years once again.

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents ESH WINNING. Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding and Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! Finally, I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie
Programme Notes - The Editor A fantastic win away to South Shields, and the 3-0 scoreline didn’t flatter us at all. It was fully deserved over the 90 minutes and we scored a couple of cracking goals in the process. Tom Vickers set us on our way to 3 points with a looping half volley in the first half, and our lead should have been doubled, but a mixture of hitting the crossbar twice in a matter of seconds and a handball on the line denied us the 2nd goal. That was hard to take, especially being behind the goal and seeing the incident myself. Luckily though, it didn’t matter in the end. No sooner had the 2nd half kicked off, we had a penalty. Vickers involved again, this time being brought down and the referee judged it to be inside the area, despite protests from the Shields defender. Keith Douglas, who appears to have taken over from Tony Brown on penalty duties sent the keeper the wrong way. The game was sealed with 5 minutes to go, Kieran Hogg receiving a short corner (much to my dismay, I’m not a fan of short corners, but what do I know), cutting inside the defender was rifled his effort home with his right foot. The goal rounded off a cracking away day, and secured 3 vital points. Although it’s not mathematically certain yet, it would take a complete disaster for us to now finish bottom. --------------------------------------------------------------------------New signing Lee Waugh made his debut for the club in the win at South Shields, and he impressed the travelling members of the 472. Wasn’t afraid to put himself about up front, and had a couple of efforts at goal. It’ll be interesting to see how he gets on as the season draws to a close. --------------------------------------------------------------------------I’m having to check through the recent history books, but if I’ve added up correctly, then Kieran Hogg will make his 100th appearance for the club before the season is over. A fantastic achievement, and with plenty of years left ahead of him he should see another couple of hundred at least. I’m hoping to have some sort of an archive spreadsheet set up in time for the start of next season. With so much of the clubs history missing it’s not easy, but I do have some figures to work with. Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season BRIAN BROOKS GOALKEEPER
DAN MULLEN
The 472 Player of the Season for 2012/13, Brooka played a massive part in keeping the club in the Northern League. One of the club’s longest serving players and a genuine role model for the younger lads coming through. SPONSORED BY: WESTERHOPE COUNTRY LIVING Dan has become the first choice this season and has made a promising start to his Alnwick Town career. Not for sale.

‘OOMPA LOOMPA’ as the 472 song goes, Alex has become a permanent fixture in the defence at the club. Now that Marc Nixon has left, he has officially been crowned the club’s tallest player. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS Danny will be hoping for an injury-free season, having had lengthy spells out following games against Esh Winning. He has a different haircut every week, at the moment though he’s looking a bit bald on top, with a daft beard. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hillsy has returned to the club following his big money move to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion last season. Still a favourite of the programme editor due to his Sunderland roots, Hillsy adds some much needed experience at the back. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Tom Mac has taken over as captain this season. Loves the banter at the club, especially the away days involving Christmas jumpers and bribing the judges in Brampton. SPONSORED BY: JOHN PROUDLOCK BUILDING CONTRACTOR 01669 621 141 Jake will be hoping for more first team action this year, and following the retirement of the club’s long serving left back this could be his year. Younger brother of Danny, with a lot more hair on top, and a daft beard. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hoggy has become a permanent fixture at left back this season and is continuing to improve. A danger when he runs with the ball at defenders. Overdue a goal or two.

Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season You’ll often find Kiddy on the treatment table due to being made of glass. Cruciate ligament injuries and dislocated shoulders are just part of the game apparently. AWOL in USA again. Follow him on twitter @chriskidd4 SPONSORED BY: TOM MCKIE Muzza. Club Captain. Legend. Hates a booking. Heart and soul of the club. Never stops running. Caused a 1 man pitch invasion last season with 2 late goals against Brandon United. It was worth it. SPONSORED BY: PETER ROPER The first player to score 20 goals in the Northern League for the club since James Swordy. Tony arguably kept the club up last season and scored some crackers in the process. A hat-trick against Birtley rounded off his season. SPONSORED BY: ALLAN TAIT Kev has returned to the club again following stints of kicking and punching lumps out of others in a cage. He’s a canny lad. Will never back out of a tackle, and sure to give Muzza a run for his money this year for the ‘Bad Boy’ award.

Tom is back in first team action following a successful cricket season (again) and also the birth of his first child. Lots of Northern League experience and a nuisance to defenders. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR
Described by his former club North Shields as a ‘legend’, Keith has a phenomenal scoring record in the Northern League, and he has finally come home! A big signing for the club, Keith bagged a brace on debut against Esh Winning. SPONSORED BY: ALAN BURN Minnow’s 2nd season with the club and he’ll be hoping to get more action this year from the starting line-up. Scored a couple of vital goals last season, lets hope for a few more again this season. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

TeamDinga Darts and Charity Cycle Team are proud to support Alnwick Town Football Club
For only £2.50 per section, you can help support Alnwick Town AFC financially for the 2013-2014 season by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch. Each section is roughly the size of a dugout in the illustration above, and you can use it to advertise a business, charity, or if you like simply your own name. You may purchase as many sections as you wish. If we can fill each section of the pitch, we will raise £205.00. Although this may not seem like much in terms or running a football club, every little helps. The money raised would almost cover the photocopying costs for the inserts of the matchday programme for the entire season. Contact us atafc1879@btconnect.com or on Twitter @alnwicktownafc for details. Current Total Raised: £110.00, with 53.66% of sections taken.

Our Visitors… Esh Winning Football clubs in Esh Winning date back as far as 1889, including a team which won the Northern League in 1913. The latest incarnation of the club was formed in 1969 as the current version Esh Winning F.C. gained acceptance into the Durham and District Sunday League Third Division. Promotion was achieved in 1971, the Guards Cup was won the following season and in 1973 Esh Winning carried off the Division Two Championship. In 1975 there were victories in the Stafferi Cup and in 1976 the Earls House Sunday Cup. 1979 and 1980 saw Esh carry off back to back Sunday League Championships before spending the 1981/82 season in the Northern Alliance where a respectable sixth place was achieved. Successful election into the newly-created Dryborough’s Northern League Second Division followed where Esh remained until 2002 when the club was promoted to Division One. In the 2005-06 season the club got off to a slow start and were relegated back to the Second Division after 4 years in the Northern League top flight. The 2007/08 season was a proud one in the history of Esh Winning Football Club. Although we finished only 13th in the Second Division, the club won its first piece of silverware since rejoining the Northern League in 1982. Despite being underdogs on the day, Esh lifted the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup with an impressive 3-0 victory in the Final against Sunderland R.C.A. at Ryton’s Kingsley Park ground. In the run to the final Esh also defeated Crook Town, Brandon United and Norton Ancients without conceding a single goal in any game. The 2008/09 season was one of success too, finishing in third place and achieving promotion to the 1st Division where we maintained our position until the struggle of 2010/11 where we relegated to division 2.

Previous Encounter Alnwick Town 2-3 Esh Winning Report Courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette. AT a rain sodden St James Park Alnwick s chances of victory were washed away on a mudbath of a pitch. With the conditions affecting both teams, ninth placed Alnwick were made to pay as two second-half strikes gave the visitors the points. James Lang s penalty had given Alnwick a first half lead which they were unable to add to on a quagmire of a pitch. Manager Mac Belisle said: "Due to the conditions it was hard to get the ball out of the middle and onto the flanks. "They are a good side Esh Winning but the weather contributed more to their win than our performance. "They handled the conditions better than we did, but one game does not make a bad team. We have had nice little runs going before and we shall have to do so again." The rain continued to fall as the match kicked off causing the pitch to cut up reducing the possibility of flowing football. Paul McGlen almost gave Alnwick the perfect start as he ran from midfield after three minutes and forced a save from Colin Campbell, with the rebound cleared. Esh Winning signalled their intent with a number of half chances including a header which sailed over the bar. The break through came as Darren Coxford broke into Esh s box on 15 minutes and was brought down, giving Lang the opportunity to put Alnwick 1-0 up. Esh s players were screaming in vain for a penalty a minute later as their striker sprawled over Wayne Belisle as he made the save. Coxford was inches away from giving Alnwick a 2-0 lead as his powerful 25-yard angled shot flashed passed the post. A spectacular Brian Wray volley six-yards out on the stroke of half-time pulled Esh Winning level. Alnwick continued to create chances in the second half, but despite good approach play they were unable to score. Coxford missed another opportunity, Robert Cockburn was unlucky as he chased a through ball and Andrew Metcalf saw a shot fly wide of the post. Cockburn was brought down from behind on 70 minutes as he ran from midfield, taking on two defenders he was felled by a third. The resulting free-kick failed to trouble the keeper as it whizzed along the wet surface. Esh then produced the perfect sucker blow as they scored twice in two minutes. First with a Dean Smithson header and then David Gray slid in the third. The 3-1 scoreline was hard on Alnwick who had battled throughout but were unable to find the back of the net. With almost the last kick of the game Albert Straughan side footed Alnwick’s second, with the referee ending the game straight away. Fife Plant Hire Ltd man of the match: Albert Straughan.
