A Brief History of Alnwick Town AFC Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. Back in the Northern League, the club finished in 16th place, and achieved Grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League, meaning the club would be competing in the F.A Vase and Senior Cup once again. With plans for the future on the horizon, the club can hopefully look forward to a return of the glory years once again.

Welcome to St James’ Park The Home of Alnwick Town AFC Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents THORNABY. Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding and Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! Finally, I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie - The Chairman

Programme Notes - The Editor I’m writing these notes the day after our 5-3 defeat to West Allotment Celtic. Having had a night to reflect on the result, it is clear that if we can cut out the mistakes we’ll be fine. It doesn’t matter who you are playing against, if you go in at half time conceding 5 goals then the chances of getting anything from the game are slim. Credit to the lads though, we came out 2nd half and gave them a bit of a fright. When the 3rd goal went in and we were still creating chances, I did believe we could get something. It wasn’t to be though, and best of luck to them as there’s a pretty good chance that they’ll be heading to the 1st Division. Two players made their debut on Friday night (Chris Graham and Darren Riddell), and we’ve registered another 5 players (Scott McMullen, Iain Nickalls, Matthew Graham, Ross Young and Ross Gair). Most will only be available as cover or for midweek games from what I’ve heard. It gives us a bit more strength in depth as we’ve struggled in the past for numbers with injuries and suspensions. The last couple of games has also seen Dominic Schiavetta make his debut and also get his first goal for the club, and Ross Straughan (although still waiting for a first start this season) has been coming on as a central defender rather than in midfield and has been impressive. It just shows that the club’s reserve side is producing the goods, and hopefully we’ll have more coming through before the season is over. Today’s opponents recorded a 6-3 win against Tow Law Town to move them above ourselves on goal difference. Last season they provided us with our first 3 points (and goals I think) in a 4-1 victory here at St James’ Park. To keep away from the relegation places we’ve got to be looking for 3 points again today. Make sure we get the wins against the sides around us and we’ll be fine. If you haven’t already heard, the club are launching a monthly prize draw in March called the 100 Club. Tickets are £20 and you will be entered into 10 draws, with guaranteed prizes of £50, £30 and £20. The December draw will include a bonus draw of £250 for Christmas. If you’d like to buy a ticket, get in touch with a committee man, or just ask behind the bar in the clubhouse. Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season BRIAN BROOKS GOALKEEPER 31 DAN MULLEN

The 472 Player of the Season for 2012/13, Brooka played a massive part in keeping the club in the Northern League. One of the club’s longest serving players and a genuine role model for the younger lads coming through. SPONSORED BY: WESTERHOPE COUNTRY LIVING

Dan has joined the club this summer and has made a promising start, keeping his first clean sheet in the victory against Northallerton Town.

Danny will be hoping for an injury-free season, having had lengthy spells out following games against Esh Winning. He has a different haircut every week, at the moment though he’s looking a bit bald on top. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hillsy has returned to the club following his big money move to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion last season. Still a favourite of the programme editor due to his Sunderland roots, Hillsy adds some much needed experience at the back. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Tom Mac has taken over as captain this season. Loves the banter at the club, especially the away days involving Christmas jumpers and bribing the judges in Brampton. SPONSORED BY: JOHN PROUDLOCK BUILDING CONTRACTOR 01669 621 141 Jake will be hoping for more first team action this year, and following the retirement of the club’s long serving left back this could be his year. Younger brother of Danny, with a lot more hair on top. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hoggy has become a permanent fixture in the first team, switching to a more central role, but is still more than capable on the wing or at full back. A danger when he runs with the ball at defenders. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS

Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season You’ll often find Kiddy on the treatment table due to being made of glass. Cruciate ligament injuries and dislocated shoulders are just part of the game apparently. Follow him on twitter @chriskidd4 SPONSORED BY: TOM MCKIE Muzza. Club Captain. Legend. Hates a booking. Heart and soul of the club. Never stops running. Caused a 1 man pitch invasion last season with 2 late goals against Brandon United. It was worth it. SPONSORED BY: PETER ROPER The first player to score 20 goals in the Northern League for the club since James Swordy. Tony arguably kept the club up last season and scored some crackers in the process. A hat-trick against Birtley rounded off his season. SPONSORED BY: ALLAN TAIT Kev has returned to the club again following stints of kicking and punching lumps out of others in a cage. He’s a canny lad. Will never back out of a tackle, and sure to give Muzza a run for his money this year for the ‘Bad Boy’ award.

Tom is back in first team action following a successful cricket season (again) and also the birth of his first child. Lots of Northern League experience and a nuisance to defenders. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

Described by his former club North Shields as a ‘legend’, Keith has a phenomenal scoring record in the Northern League, and he has finally come home! A big signing for the club, Keith bagged a brace on debut against Esh Winning. SPONSORED BY: ALAN BURN Minnow’s 2nd season with the club and he’ll be hoping to get more action this year from the starting line-up. TeamDinga Darts and Charity Cycle Team are proud to support Alnwick Town Football Club

For only £2.50 per section, you can help support Alnwick Town AFC financially for the 2013-2014 season by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch.

Each section is roughly the size of a dugout in the illustration above, and you can use it to advertise a business, charity, or if you like simply your own name. You may purchase as many sections as you wish. If we can fill each section of the pitch, we will raise £205.00. Although this may not seem like much in terms or running a football club, every little helps. The money raised would almost cover the photocopying costs for the inserts of the matchday programme for the entire season. Contact us atafc1879@btconnect.com or on Twitter @alnwicktownafc for details. Current Total Raised: £97.50, with 47.56% of sections taken.

Random Stat: Alnwick Town have used 31 different players so far in the 2013-14 season.

At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the Northern League gained a freshly-named club in its ranks in the guise of Thornaby - and one that has a bright future to look forward to and will be a force to be reckoned with in its native area of Teesside. The newly-named club had had a long and chequered career after originally starting life as Stockton Athletic in 1882. For 50 years it became one of the country's leading amateur sides, winning many Northern League honours during this time. After this successful period, thirty more years elapsed with membership held in various other leagues before a decline in fortunes, mainly due to financial problems, saw the club disband in 1975, and the historic Victoria Ground sold off for building land. Eventually, in 1980, the long journey back began and the re-formed Stockton joined the Wearside League for the 1980/81 season, eventually regaining Northern League status at the 1985 AGM, reverting to Thornaby-on-Tees FC for 1999/2000 and a year later to Thornaby FC.

Tonight’s Visitors - Thornaby

The birth of Thornaby as a new team was based on very sound practical reasons. There was a definite need to identify with the local community in a more effective way, and that much-needed support could be generated with local businesses being actively involved. The eventual aim for Thornaby is to challenge the 'giants' of the Northern League, many of whom are hugely respected throughout the non-League scene. As well as the Northern League team, they have 5 junior teams aged from under 7s, 8s, 11s, U15s and under 16's. Since reformation in 1980, major honours include winning the Stockton & Dist: 1980-81Wearside: 1981-85 – Sunderland Shipowners Cup R-Up 1982-83- North Riding Senior Cup 1985-8: Northern League Second Division championship in 1987-88, 91-92 and the Craven Cup in 1995. For any club to be successful the infrastructure has to be in place, and Thornaby's hard working committee, including secretary Trevor Wing and chairman Laurence Lyons have plans for major ground developments some have been made already including a club house, café, seats in the stand, hard standing round the pitch and refurbished changing rooms.

Previous Encounter Alnwick Town 4-1 Thornaby Report courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette. Alnwick Town thrashed Thornaby 4-1 on Tuesday night to pick up their first win of the season. It also marked the first time that the St James’ Park side has found the net in the 2012/13 campaign. And the victory ended a dismal run of four straight defeats in all competitions. Paul Hodge and Tony Brown scored a goal apiece for Alnwick before a brace from striker Wyn Fremlin completed the scoring against Thornaby in the midweek Ebac Northern League Division Two clash. It was no more than Alnwick deserved. Not just in this game, but for much of the early part of the season, which has seen the black ‘n’ whites play well and create chances, but without reward. But, having not scored in the first five games of the campaign, Alnwick didn’t have to wait long to break their duck in Tuesday night’s encounter, going ahead through Hodge after just five minutes. The home side were pegged back though in the 11th minute, when Thornaby’s lively number 10 equalised. Alnwick went close to taking the lead soon after when Fremlin hit the bar from 40 yards, having seen the Thornaby keeper off his line. Chances fell to both sides after that, but neither could take advantage and the teams were locked at 1-1 at half-time. But six minutes after the interval, Alnwick regained the lead when Brown broke free and shot from the edge of the penalty area and a slight deflection left the keeper stranded. This goal gave the home team a much-needed confidence boost and they dominated the rest of the game. The pacey Fremlin grabbed two for himself, scoring in the 68th and 87th minute to round-off a fine personal performance and a good team effort. Alnwick will be hoping this will kick-start their season. Alnwick Town (v Thornaby): B Brooks, L Dundas (D Lowes), N Catlow, B Murray, T Mcpherson, D Hills,M Nixon (A Makin), T Brown, W Fremlin (J Jackson), C Moffat, P Hodge.
