A Brief History of Alnwick Town AFC Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. Back in the Northern League, the club finished in 16th place, and achieved Grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League, meaning the club would be competing in the F.A Vase and Senior Cup once again. With plans for the future on the horizon, the club can hopefully look forward to a return of the glory years once again.

A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents WEST ALLOTMENT CELTIC Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. Notes from the Manager.... Last season was tough and a big learning curve for both management and players. I would like to thank the committee and management team for 'believing' in my knowledge and skills as a manager and their continuing support throughout last season. I am looking forward to getting this season underway. The players have trained hard throughout pre season and are in good shape both physically and mentally. Some pre season friendlies proved challenging yet gave the team a confidence boost for the start of the season. We wish Danny Donohoe and Chris Kidd a speedy recovery, with both suffering serious injuries during friendlies. We start this season without two of the longest serving players, Neil Catlow and Gary Patterson, who retired at the end of last season. We wish them well and hope to still see them around the club. Latest news within the club sees Bryan Murray stand down as Captain after many years. Bryan has been a great leader both on and off the pitch and an excellent role model to all. He has handed over this duty to Tom Macpherson, who is eager to fulfil this role and follow in Muzza's footsteps. At Alnwick Town we strive to use local players who have progressed through the junior section. It takes time to build up youngsters skills and confidence which enables them to play at a Northern League Standard. We are now starting to see the time and effort so many of our junior coaches have put in, as the majority of both first and reserves players are under the age of 25 and have progressed from junior level. It is now the time for the younger players to step up and rise to the challenge. I would like to thank all of the supporters of Alnwick Town AFC and a special mention to the 472 who followed us home and away throughout last season. We value your continued support and encouragement! I have set myself a personal target of a mid table finish at the end of this season. I am confident that the players are capable of this achievement and as a team we believe that this is possible. He has a different haircut every week, at the moment though he’s looking a bit bald on top. Meet The Away Team... Goalkeepers Chris Bannon - Another player well-known to the club. Formerly of Washington, popular ‘keeper Chris returns to Allotment for a second stint between the sticks, and will jostle with Ryan Beal for the number one jersey. Ryan Beal - An excellent shot stopper, Ryan featured extensively in last season’s cup-winning campaign, and will look to consolidate his place with similarly strong performances this season. Bob Rodgerson - An experienced goalkeeper in the Northern Alliance with Percy Main, Bob has deputised ably as a third-choice goalkeeper, and will provide solid cover for Chris and Ryan.

Defenders John Pendlebury - A first-team regular since signing for Allotment from Ryton in 2010, John’s relentless work ethic and tenacious tackling bring stability to the back four. The full-back occasionally serves as captain in the absence of Ian Dunn. Marc Dummett - The former Ponteland United and Dunston full-back has proven to be an asset to the club in both defence and attack. His crossing ability in both regular play and from set-pieces is second to none. Chris Douglas - The ultimate utility player, Chris can be employed anywhere down either flank to devastating effect. The former North Shields man’s pace and perception underpins his undoubted ability, be it as a full-back or a more advanced winger. Paul Stoneman - The stalwart player-manager centre-half has played for Blackpool, Colchester United and Halifax Town. Despite turning 40 last year, ‘Stona’ was everpresent last season, remaining unbeatable in the air and impervious in the tackle. Michael Latimer - Seasoned stopper Michael returns to Allotment, having spent time at Bedlington Terriers, Newcastle Benfield and Washington. A tough tackler and a highly versatile member of the squad. Stephen Little - The ex-Annfield Plain and Killingworth stopper shone at the back for Allotment last season, putting in a series of superlative defensive showings, earning the Player’s Player of the Year Award in the process. Glenn Ford - Glenn rejoined the club during the 2012/13 season, making a handful of solid appearances. Having committed for this coming season, fans can expect to see much more of Glenn and his defensive abilities. Simon Wilthew - Simon featured 15 times at the back for Allotment last season. Strong at centre-half and adept at left-back, the Monkseaton defender will be looking to build on his impressive debut in the Northern League. Roy Gordon - Roy rejoins Celtic for a second spell, having last played for the club during the 2011/12 season. Able to play at full-back or on the wing, the experienced leftfooter has also turned out for North Shields, Consett and Annfield Plain. Ryan Page - A product of Newcastle United’s academy, hot prospect Ryan has since appeared on both sides of the tyne for North and South Shields. The 19-year-old can play at full-back and in central midfield.

Midfielders Ian Dunn - Long-serving, tough tackling midfielder Dunn has grafted for three years at Allotment, earning the captain’s armband in the process. “Dunny” remains one of Celtic’s key men deep in the heart of midfield. Marc Allen - Marc previously turned out for Whitley Bay Reserves, but has become a mainstay in the Celtic squad. His astute passing, ball retention skills and battling tenacity are evident whenever he is called upon in central midfield. Sean Reid - Rangy, pacy and technically gifted, Sean can play as a roaming central midfielder, a dangerous centre-forward, or even an adept centre-back. The former Ryton forward is one of Celtic’s most promising attacking outlets. David Henderson - David Henderson rejoined the club last season, and the former North Shields schemer provides another option going forward through the middle. Henders is arguably one of the most skilful players in the squad. Michael Bell - Brimming with potential, “Belly” won the Under-19 National Schools Cup with Northumberland and has also represented Ryton. Bell is strong in the air, and can also operate on the wing and as a supporting striker. Tony Lancaster - Signed from Wark in March 2011. Tony struggled with injuries last term, but will hope to be back to his pacy, dangerous best this season. Tony can also operate as a right-back. Tony can also operate as a wholly competent right-back. Kallum McGlen - A former Montagu & North Fenham favourite, Kallum features on the right hand side of midfield, where his energy and technique often causes problems for opposing full-backs. Dean Lee - A winger with the scoring nous of a forward, the former North Shields man has all of the tools required to strike fear into the hearts of defenders. One of Celtic’s most prolific threats going forward.

Attackers Liam Hudson - Another former Ryton forward, Liam is capable of pressuring his opposite numbers into submission with his strength and high work rate. “Hud” can also be deployed on the right wing. David Dormand - David’s prolific record for Shankhouse precedes him, and the former Morpeth forward has already replicated his goalscoring fo rm since joining Celtic. A clinical poacher and a hard worker up front. Jed Findlay - Signed from Cramlington Town in February, Jed is a promising forward with plenty of attacking potential. Having made a handfu l of appearances last season, the striker will be hoping to get more game time this campaign. Ryan Anderson - A promising young striker, Ryan was snapped up in trials for Allotment’s ‘A’ team, and has already impressed for both the development side and the first team’s respective pre-seasons. Lawrence McKenna - Lawrence is well-travelled, having topped the scoring charts for Whickham, before going on to play for Bedlington Terriers and Newcastle Benfield. Is known to be a deadly finisher in the division.

Backroom Staff Wilf Kielty - Assistant Manager - Wilf has been around the local non-league scene for many years, both as a player and in a management role, giving notable service to North Shields. He managed the Robins for several seasons before assisting Stoneman at Whitley Park. Paul Hogg - First Team Coach - Like Wilf, the UEFA-licensed coach is held in very high regard at North Shields, having played, coached and managed there for over a decade. Paul has also managed Annfield Plain, and is working with the Newcastle United Foundation. Charlotte Ferguson - Physiotherapist. Charlotte is in her final year of her Physiotherapy studies at Northumbria University, and is currently on h er final placement at the RVI. She is also a qualified sports masseur.

Meet The Away Team... HISTORY Spiritual beginnings The history of the club goes back into the early years of the last century. The first organised cub to represent the village competed in the Byker & District League as early as 1908/09. Various clubs came and went over the ensuing years, but the formation of the West Allotment Primitive Methodists (PMs) team after World War I was the key step leading to the creation of the present-day club. The PMs competed in the Forest Hall & District Churches’ League with reasonable success until 1928, when the PMs began to struggle financially. Deeply-rooted in a coal-mining community and with the industry in turmoil following the General Strike, trying to maintain a local club was extremely difficult. Thus, the old PMs merged with West Allotment Juniors to form an entirely new club - West Allotment Celtic, as it came to be known. From creation to contenders After moving to the newly-created Tynemouth & District League in 1935, the club began to grow in stature. After some early setbacks, a string of impressive performances saw Allotment soar up the table, reducing a ten point deficit between themselves and the other contenders by the end of the season. The club had to face Whitley Bay & Monkseaton Reserves in a play-off for the title. Unfortunately, the decider went the way of the seasiders. Remarkably, Allotment also finished in a play-off position in the following two seasons – and, in both cases, had to settle for a runner-up spot. Changing leagues, sheds and times In 1938, the club joined the Second Division of the Northern Amateur League. Now playing at the aptly-named Farm Ground, which was to remain “home” until 1968, supporters helped to dismantle a cowshed in Heaton and move it, piece by piece, to West Allotment, where it was reassembled at the ground. The shed was not for spectators – it served as the players’ changing facilities! The club earned instant promotion (after a play-off, such is club tradition), but World War II put a stop to any further progress. A succession of successes The club recommenced operations in 1946/47 and enjoyed an unprecedented run of success from the mid-fifties onwards. Allotment won the championship for four consecutive seasons between 1956 and 1960, along with the NFA Amateur Cup in 1957 and the NFA Minor Cup in 1958. The slippery slope of the sixties Celtic remained loyal to the Northern Amateur League, but the bulk of the team moved on, and the club entered a period of decline as a result. Throughout the sixties, fans and footballers alike had to endure times that were mediocre at best and dire at worst. The club was stagnating so badly – in tandem with the increasingly uncompetitive league – that closure become a distinctly worrying possibility. The threat of dissolution was eventually staved off by the introduction of new blood into the club towards the end of the sixties. Celtic also moved to Backworth Welfare in 1968, consigning the ponds and mud of the Farm Ground to memory. Champions at long last A rejuvenated West Allotment won the NFA Amateur Cup again in 1975, largely thanks to the goalscoring exploits of Benny Williams, who averaged almost one goal a game in his 400 appearances for the club. Williams was ably supported by a talented and hungry squad, and, with strength in depth, Allotment were always considered title contenders. However, the championship remained tantalisingly out of reach until yet another play-off tie in 1982. Allotment finally won the coveted title, defeating Annitsford Welfare by the odd goal in seven. When Celtic retained the title with relative ease the following season, the decision was taken to move up a tier for the first time since 1938. The colossus of the Northern Alliance In 1983, Allotment made its debut in both the Northern Alliance and the FA Vase. The first honour of the period arrived just one season later, as Allotment dispatched Ponteland United in the Alliance Challenge Cup Final. This success was followed up two seasons later by the first of Celtic’s eight Alliance titles. In 1987, West Allotment emerged victorious from two nail-biting play-off games against Gosforth St. Nicholas, ushering in a wave of success not enjoyed at the club since the fifties. Throughout this period, Celtic won seven further Northern Alliance titles, never finishing lower than sixth. Terry Mitchell and Brian Latty built upon Ken Scott and Billy Hays’ consecutive Alliance league titles, leading Allotment into the Northern League. The modern day Having acted as tenants at Hillheads in Whitley Bay since 1995, the club set out to find a new home, and found it in Benton. In 2001, the club moved to Whitley Park, also known as the Blue Flames Sports Ground.
