A Brief History of Alnwick Town AFC Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. Back in the Northern League, the club finished in 16th place, and achieved Grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League, meaning the club would be competing in the F.A Vase and Senior Cup once again. With plans for the future on the horizon, the club can hopefully look forward to a return of the glory years once again.

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents WHICKHAM. Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding and Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! Finally, I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie
Programme Notes - The Secretary We extend a warm welcome to all Whickham players, officials and supporters. Some may know that there are longstanding links with players that have been associated or who have played for both clubs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Alnwick had a team from two areas, Alnwick District and the Dunston area. They combined to make possibly one of the best teams Alnwick has had. The main characters from Dunston were Frankie Peareth, John Shanley, Davey Liddle, Tommy Dixon, Peter Crilley, Ray Woods, John Farrey, Frankie Rankin, Davy Webb, Robinson plus a few others which age prevents my memory from recollecting! Combine them with Eric Hately, Davy Redpath, Duncan Martin, Geoff Anderson, Lar Gains, Eddie Alder, Brian Pringle, Tommy Pickard, Smithy, Malcolm Robson, John Eves, Ian Billeine, Raymond Kirkup, John Hopper, Ian Moir, Cyril Martin, Gordon Pattinson, Johnny Duncan, Raymond Duncan, and others, combined into a team that had the potential to win the FA Amateur Cup and just got knocked out after four rounds. I could write pages on the characters of these players but I will relate to one from Frankie Peareth. It was after a game against Belford and there was a certain Brian Pringle playing for them, so Frankie said “Sign that ******* - he is too fast for me!” So we did! If we were short of players (not very often) on a Friday night the then Secretary Jackie Walker would phone Frankie (usually at the Dunston Club) and he would rustle up some of the “Dunston Mafia” and you knew every one of them was a good player. Dunston FC was the top Sunday Club team. I don’t tend to live in the past but I hold it as an honour to have known them and to have watched them play the beautiful game. Let’s not forget that the successful team was backed up by a hard working Committee of about 10. With our efforts over the last five years the Club is on the threshold of major development which I feel this Town and District deserves, for all the hard work put into it. I wish all our friends a successful time except, of course, against us! We owe you one. Cyril E J Cox Secretary/Vice Chairman, Development

Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season BRIAN BROOKS GOALKEEPER
DAN MULLEN
The 472 Player of the Season for 2012/13, Brooka played a massive part in keeping the club in the Northern League. One of the club’s longest serving players and a genuine role model for the younger lads coming through. SPONSORED BY: WESTERHOPE COUNTRY LIVING Dan has become the first choice this season and has made a promising start to his Alnwick Town career. Not for sale.

‘OOMPA LOOMPA’ as the 472 song goes, Alex has become a permanent fixture in the defence at the club. Now that Marc Nixon has left, he has officially been crowned the club’s tallest player. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS Danny will be hoping for an injury-free season, having had lengthy spells out following games against Esh Winning. He has a different haircut every week, at the moment though he’s looking a bit bald on top, with a daft beard. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hillsy has returned to the club following his big money move to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion last season. Still a favourite of the programme editor due to his Sunderland roots, Hillsy adds some much needed experience at the back. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Tom Mac has taken over as captain this season. Loves the banter at the club, especially the away days involving Christmas jumpers and bribing the judges in Brampton. SPONSORED BY: JOHN PROUDLOCK BUILDING CONTRACTOR 01669 621 141 Jake will be hoping for more first team action this year, and following the retirement of the club’s long serving left back this could be his year. Younger brother of Danny, with a lot more hair on top, and a daft beard. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hoggy has become a permanent fixture at left back this season and is continuing to improve. A danger when he runs with the ball at defenders. Overdue a goal or two.
MIDFIELDER SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS
Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season You’ll often find Kiddy on the treatment table due to being made of glass. Cruciate ligament injuries and dislocated shoulders are just part of the game apparently. AWOL in USA again. Follow him on twitter @chriskidd4 SPONSORED BY: TOM MCKIE Muzza. Club Captain. Legend. Hates a booking. Heart and soul of the club. Never stops running. Caused a 1 man pitch invasion last season with 2 late goals against Brandon United. It was worth it. SPONSORED BY: PETER ROPER The first player to score 20 goals in the Northern League for the club since James Swordy. Tony arguably kept the club up last season and scored some crackers in the process. A hat-trick against Birtley rounded off his season. SPONSORED BY: ALLAN TAIT Kev has returned to the club again following stints of kicking and punching lumps out of others in a cage. He’s a canny lad. Will never back out of a tackle, and sure to give Muzza a run for his money this year for the ‘Bad Boy’ award.

Tom is back in first team action following a successful cricket season (again) and also the birth of his first child. Lots of Northern League experience and a nuisance to defenders. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR
Described by his former club North Shields as a ‘legend’, Keith has a phenomenal scoring record in the Northern League, and he has finally come home! A big signing for the club, Keith bagged a brace on debut against Esh Winning. SPONSORED BY: ALAN BURN Minnow’s 2nd season with the club and he’ll be hoping to get more action this year from the starting line-up. Scored a couple of vital goals last season, lets hope for a few more again this season. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR
Dale will be hoping for an injury free season after complications from the previous season’s injury. Will run himself into the ground and not shy to put a foot in. Big chance this year. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

TeamDinga Darts and Charity Cycle Team are proud to support Alnwick Town Football Club
For only £2.50 per section, you can help support Alnwick Town AFC financially for the 2013-2014 season by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch. Each section is roughly the size of a dugout in the illustration above, and you can use it to advertise a business, charity, or if you like simply your own name. You may purchase as many sections as you wish. If we can fill each section of the pitch, we will raise £205.00. Although this may not seem like much in terms or running a football club, every little helps. The money raised would almost cover the photocopying costs for the inserts of the matchday programme for the entire season. Contact us atafc1879@btconnect.com or on Twitter @alnwicktownafc for details. Current Total Raised: £110.00, with 53.66% of sections taken.

Our Visitors… Whickham The club was formed in 1944 under the name of Axwell Park Colliery Welfare, although they were colloquially termed the Home Guard Team! In the early days they played in the Derwent Valley League, before switching to the Northern Combination and, in 1974, to the Wearside League. Whickham enjoyed quite a degree of success at this level before joining the Northern League Second Division in 1988.Having reached the Semi Final of the FA Vase in 1978/79 losing to Almondsbury Greenway, It was in 1981 that Whickham had their finest hour, going all the way to the Twin Towers in the final of the FA Vase, after a titanic struggle, to overcome Windsor & Eton in the semi Final. An estimated 5,000 fans followed Whickham to Wembley. Willenhall, a Midlands Club, awaited Whickham on the big day, but there were problems. Paul Allon, who had notched the crucial injury- time winner in the semi, suffered injury before the Final and had to be content with a place on the bench. Ironically, this made room for lan Diamond, who had suffered the same fate whilst with Blue Star in 1978. The Final began horribly, with Willenhall going 2-0 up in the opening ten minutes. The task of winning the Vase appeared to be a forlorn one, but the gloom was partially dispelled when fullback Alan Scott quickly halved the deficit. Then, an accidental collision with Cawthra led to the Willenhall goalkeeper being stretchered off. Was the tide turning? Twelve minutes into the second half, and Whickham were level, thanks to Ronnie Williamson. 2-2 it was, and 2-2 it stayed till the 90-minute mark. Who could dig that bit deeper, and find the extra reserves of strength needed to life the trophy? The answer was supplied in the dying seconds of the first half of extra-time. Billy Cawthra broke away and launched a potent shot which, though blocked, ricocheted off a hapless Willenhall defender into the net. 3-2, and the FA Vase was headed back to Whickham! This success leaves us as the last North East based club to win a National Final at the now re-built Wembley Stadium, our clubs little piece of History. Whickham again nearly reached Wembley in 1983/84 before losing in their 3 rd Semi Final in a controversial game in the 2nd leg at home against Stansted which saw 2 Whickham players sent off in a bad tempered game. After just one season in the 2nd Division under the management of Billy Hodgson the club gained promotion for the first time into the 1st Division in 1988/89 and spent 3 seasons there before being relegated in 19991/92. Another Promotion came in 19994/95 when they won the 2 nd Division. A further two seasons was spent in the 1st Division before another relegation in 1996/97 back into the 2nd Division where they’ve remained since. After Billy’s reign the club struggled to find its identity and with funds really tight they struggled to compete and although 3 or 4 managers took over, the club found itself in a perilous position 1999/00 when without the intervention of manager Tony Ainley the club was in grave danger of going out of business. Tony’s reign started with no players and no money and although his first two seasons were really about survival the club was once again safely settled in the Northern League. Over the last 4 or 5 years the club has undertaken major changes and the hard Work was rewarded when after a fantastic run defeating 4 1st Division sides on the way the club found itself in the final of the Prestigious Durham Challenge Cup and after being second best for long spells against a very good Billingham Synthonia side, two late goals from Kenny Boyle and Ian Robson snatched Whickham an amazing victory. The Following season we followed the capture of the DCC by winning the newly named Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup (2nd Division Cup) by defeating Penrith in an exciting Penalty shoot out. In our defence of the DCC also in that season, we also reached the Semi Final of the DCC in our defence of that Trophy before losing a close game away at Chester le Street. On the present management side Robin Falcus continues as manager, with Kris Holmes his assistant. Paul Cavanagh continues as player/coach. We welcome the very experienced Jonny Larkin to our coaching staff. Our committee for the 2013-14 season consists of: Brian McCartney continues as Chairman (and all the other jobs he does). Les Dixon is our General Manager and Secretary. Alan Walton is our Treasurer, Mick Tucker is our match day secretary, Ash Rook is our committee man, and so much more! We have 3 Junior sides involved with the club and this year there’ll be an Under 12’s, Under 16’s and an Under 18’s team. The clubs past may be chequered and not without success but we believe, on a very limited budget we’ve got this football club running very much on the right lines and go into this season with continued optimism, to try and continue to improve and hopefully build on last season and be pushing for a promotion spot again. Easier said than done, especially on one of the leagues smallest playing budgets but with or without money we believe Whickham FC will continue to compete at the right end of the table and continue to be seen as one of the leagues friendliest clubs, which is important to us, and we hope to be competitive once again in the Northern league Second Division. We know none of our players are at Whickham for the money, because if they are they must have misheard the manager when he discussed money, or the lack of it. Good Luck to all our Teams this season and hopefully we'll continue to enjoy some good games and results whilst looking to make even more friends in and around the Northern League.

Previous Encounter Alnwick Town 4-2 Whickham Report Courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette
ALNWICK emerged deserved winners against a team who they haven't beaten for some five seasons.
In an entertaining game played in appalling weather, Alnwick were on the scoresheet after only five minutes.
Neat team play saw Neil Catlow find James Swordy out on the left, his crossfield ball was picked up by Ryan Penman who in tur n found Bryan Murray whose pass into the box was latched onto by Joe Moscrop. He fired across goalkeeper Mallinson into the bottom far corner of the net for a well -worked goal.
Catlow then made a goalline clearance after Kevin Hay had chipped the ball over Brian Brooks, the Alnwick keeper.
Whickham equalised on 10 minutes. A long free-kick from the back by Cowell split the home defence and Hay nipped in to score. Books then saved well at the feet of Elliot to deny Whickham another opportunity.
At the other end, keeper Mallinson made a great save from Carl Sanders, whose shot came after good work from Catlow and Brown .
Swordy had his effort parried away before, on 32 minutes, Alnwick got their second. Andrew Tate, in midfield, rolled the ball to Tom Vickers, who struck an unstoppable 35 yard thunderbolt past the despairing dive of Mallinson.
In the very next minute, Catlow's pass to Swordy saw the Alnwick striker hit his shot first time to score the home team's third.
Alnwick looked the more confident team and were pressing forward even as half-time approached, Swordy finding Tate in space. His lovely through-ball for Brown was intercepted by the charging keeper to deny the young Town striker.
On the stroke of half-time, Whickham's Craig Cowell was booked for kicking the ball away after the referee had awarded Alnwick a free-kick.
With 10 minutes of the second half played, Alnwick were on the attack, Tate again finding Swordy, whose cross into the box just eluded Brown who was sliding in. Six minutes later, Whickham's Kevin Lister fired wide from 25 yards. A lovely crossfield pass by Swordy to Moscrop in the next minute saw the wi nger's shot go wide.
Whickham pulled a goal back after 64 minutes. On the wet surface, defenders Belisle and Vickers both slipped and there was Pe ter Craddock to plant the ball past Brooks.
Two minutes later Alnwick restored their two-goal lead when Andrew Tate was pulled down inside the area. Up stepped Swordy to calmly score from the penalty spot.
Whickham's Andrew Elliot then headed wide a good cross by Hay. Shortly after, the visitors made their first substitution, Cavanah making way for Tindale.
Mallinson then made a good block to deny Alnwick midfielder Bryan Murray with 72 minutes gone.
Four minutes later, Whickham brought on Roberts to replace Morgan. James Swordy's through-ball caught out keeper Mallinson but Bryan Murray dragged his shot wide of the upright before Andrew Tate tried his luck, again the ball going wide.
Alnwick centre-back Tom Vickers made a great tackle inside his own box to deny Robson a shooting opportunity. With five minutes remaining Alnwick's Tate was booked, rather harshly, for a sliding tackle on Craddock.
Both teams brought on subs with time running out. Whickham's final change saw Halliday replacing Boyle and Alnwick's David Mc Cann coming on for Robert Brown.
Visiting striker Hay then blasted over the crossbar when he got clear of the defence to squander a good chance. Jamie Chapman and Paul Laing then replaced Tate and Moscrop for Alnwick, to play out the final three minutes.
Substitute Tindale's effort was parried away by Brooks, Alnwick captain Jason Belisle clearing away before, in the final minute, a Catlow speciality free-kick was well saved by Mallinson, giving Alnwick a well-deserved win.
Team: B Brooks, R Penman, N Catlow, B Murray, T Vickers, J Belisle (capt), J Moscrop, A Tate, R Brown, J Swordy, C Sanders. S ubs: P Laing, P Sanders, D McCann, J Chapman, L Smart.
