A Brief History of Alnwick Town AFC Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. Back in the Northern League, the club finished in 16th place, and achieved Grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League, meaning the club would be competing in the F.A Vase and Senior Cup once again. With plans for the future on the horizon, the club can hopefully look forward to a return of the glory years once again.

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents WILLINGTON. Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding and Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! Finally, I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Programme Notes - The Editor What a win last Tuesday night. A massive 3 points for everyone at the club and it was thoroughly deserved. Scoring 5 is never easy. To think that we could have scored even more as well just showed how much we dominated the game. Well done to Tom Vickers who got the club’s first hat-trick of the season. A poacher if ever I saw one. A combined distance of around 10 yards for his 3 goals. Right place, right time.. I know of plenty professional footballers that made careers of scoring tap-ins every week. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Tonight we welcome Willington back to St James’ Park, their first visits since the final game of the 2005-06 season. Earlier in the season, we came away with a point in a bit of a tasty encounter. Willington had a bit of a slow start, and then went on a run of wins we can only wish for, dragging themselves away from danger, and all but securing their Northern League status already for the season. --------------------------------------------------------------------------The weather has been causing enough problems up here to the fixture lists, but it could be worse.. The Isthmian League has seen over 500 postponements so far this season due to the floods. I can remember we lost about 3 months of home games when Alnwick bore the brunt of the snow a few years ago and it wasn’t nice. Many non-league clubs have been exploring the options of artificial surfaces to help beat the weather, but there is a massive financial cost to this. After the initial cost, there is also the upkeep of the surface, and worse still, it will have to be replaced as they don’t last forever. Consett and Durham City are the only 2 clubs in the Northern League with 3G surfaces at this moment in time. Who knows, in the future at a new ground we could follow suit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------Congratulations to The Stephen Carey Fund who are the winners of this years Jam Jar Army vote. Personally, I couldn’t think of a more deserving winner and I hope that they can reach their goals that they set. I have no doubt that in the Stephen Carey Cup that will be held in the pre-season at St James’ Park there will be jam jars ready to fill at the ground. Best of luck to them from everyone at the club. Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season BRIAN BROOKS GOALKEEPER

DAN MULLEN

The 472 Player of the Season for 2012/13, Brooka played a massive part in keeping the club in the Northern League. One of the club’s longest serving players and a genuine role model for the younger lads coming through. SPONSORED BY: WESTERHOPE COUNTRY LIVING Dan has joined the club this summer and has made a promising start, keeping his first clean sheet in the victory against Northallerton Town. Not for sale.

‘OOMPA LOOMPA’ as the 472 song goes, Alex has become a permanent fixture in the defence at the club. Now that Marc Nixon has left, he has officially been crowned the club’s tallest player. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS Danny will be hoping for an injury-free season, having had lengthy spells out following games against Esh Winning. He has a different haircut every week, at the moment though he’s looking a bit bald on top. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hillsy has returned to the club following his big money move to Ryton & Crawcrook Albion last season. Still a favourite of the programme editor due to his Sunderland roots, Hillsy adds some much needed experience at the back. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Tom Mac has taken over as captain this season. Loves the banter at the club, especially the away days involving Christmas jumpers and bribing the judges in Brampton. SPONSORED BY: JOHN PROUDLOCK BUILDING CONTRACTOR 01669 621 141 Jake will be hoping for more first team action this year, and following the retirement of the club’s long serving left back this could be his year. Younger brother of Danny, with a lot more hair on top. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR Hoggy has become a permanent fixture in the first team, switching to a more central role, but is still more than capable on the wing or at full back. A danger when he runs with the ball at defenders. SPONSORED BY: DAVID REYNOLDS

Alnwick Town Player Profiles - 2013/2014 Season You’ll often find Kiddy on the treatment table due to being made of glass. Cruciate ligament injuries and dislocated shoulders are just part of the game apparently. Follow him on twitter @chriskidd4 SPONSORED BY: TOM MCKIE Muzza. Club Captain. Legend. Hates a booking. Heart and soul of the club. Never stops running. Caused a 1 man pitch invasion last season with 2 late goals against Brandon United. It was worth it. SPONSORED BY: PETER ROPER The first player to score 20 goals in the Northern League for the club since James Swordy. Tony arguably kept the club up last season and scored some crackers in the process. A hat-trick against Birtley rounded off his season. SPONSORED BY: ALLAN TAIT Kev has returned to the club again following stints of kicking and punching lumps out of others in a cage. He’s a canny lad. Will never back out of a tackle, and sure to give Muzza a run for his money this year for the ‘Bad Boy’ award.

Tom is back in first team action following a successful cricket season (again) and also the birth of his first child. Lots of Northern League experience and a nuisance to defenders. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

Described by his former club North Shields as a ‘legend’, Keith has a phenomenal scoring record in the Northern League, and he has finally come home! A big signing for the club, Keith bagged a brace on debut against Esh Winning. SPONSORED BY: ALAN BURN Minnow’s 2nd season with the club and he’ll be hoping to get more action this year from the starting line-up. Scored a couple of vital goals last season, lets hope for a few more again this season. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

Dale will be hoping for an injury free season after complications from the previous season’s injury. Will run himself into the ground and not shy to put a foot in. Big chance this year. AVAILABLE TO SPONSOR

TeamDinga Darts and Charity Cycle Team are proud to support Alnwick Town Football Club

For only £2.50 per section, you can help support Alnwick Town AFC financially for the 2013-2014 season by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch.

Each section is roughly the size of a dugout in the illustration above, and you can use it to advertise a business, charity, or if you like simply your own name. You may purchase as many sections as you wish. If we can fill each section of the pitch, we will raise £205.00. Although this may not seem like much in terms or running a football club, every little helps. The money raised would almost cover the photocopying costs for the inserts of the matchday programme for the entire season. Contact us atafc1879@btconnect.com or on Twitter @alnwicktownafc for details. Current Total Raised: £105.00, with 51.22% of sections taken.

Our Visitors… Willington Willington is a former pit town whose colliery closed down in 1967, it is situated seven miles south-west of Durham city on the A690 road towards Crook. Willington Temperance were formed in 1906, originating from the Temperance Club in the town, playing in the Auckland and District League. In 1911 the club dropped their surname and moved from their West End ground, purchasing land from Lord Boyne on Hall Lane, where they immediately spent £200 on levelling, draining and relaying the pitch. This was the same year the club switched to the Northern League, where they played for the next 94 years, becoming league champions on three occasions in 1913-14, 1926-27 and 1929-30. The club also won the League Cup eight times, but their greatest cup success came in the FA Amateur Cup. In 1939 the club reached the final, their opponents were the all conquering Bishop Auckland, after being the better side in a goalless ninety minutes, they lost out in extra time, eventually succumbing to three unanswered goals in front of 20,200 at Roker Park. In 1950 they reached the final for a second time in a repeat of the final eleven years earlier, Bishops were making their 13th final appearance and it proved unlucky for them, as Willington walloped their County Durham neighbours 4-0, in front of 88,000 at Wembley Stadium. On 24/11/1973 Willington held Blackburn Rovers to a goalless draw in the first round of the FA Cup before being beaten 6 – 1 in the replay. From 1972 – 1976 the club performed well in the Northern League finishing 2 nd once, third twice and fourth once. The Northern League formed a Second Division in 1982-83, in that season the club finished bottom of the new top division, they then spent their remaining life in the Northern League amongst its second tier. The club ran into trouble off the field in December 1996, being very close to folding after running into a variety of problems, resulting in team manager Malcolm Smith taking over the reigns as acting chairman and a new administration put together, who worked hard and kept the club afloat. On the field things didn’t improve either, the side struggled at the foot of the Second Division, then after finishing bottom in 2004-05, the club stepped down to the Wearside League, being replaced by Darlington RA . The 2008/9 season started very badly with only one point from the first 17 games. New management turned things around gaining 22 points from the next 19 games lifting the club off the bottom of the league before last day results conspired to put the club bottom on goal difference. In the 2009/10 season the club struggled again on the field finishing bottom of the Wearside League, but with Rob and Jimmy Lee at the helm in 2010/11 the club reached their first cup final since 1975 and a mid table finish in the league. The 2011/12 resulted in a fifth place finish and in 2012/13 Willington were runners up in the Shipowners Cup and the Wearside League paving the way for

Previous Encounter Alnwick Town 3-0 Willington Match Report Courtesy of the Northumberland Gazette

AFTER the fiasco of Thursday evening when South Shields only turned up with six players, forcing a cancellation just before k ick-off, Alnwick faced relegated Willington in their last game of the season. The visitors at least fulfilled their obligation to play the fixture a nd did so with pride and passion.

Alnwick started off lively, Ryan Copeland seizing on a loose ball to play in James Swordy, but the striker’s shot was saved c omfortably by visiting keeper Sawyer.

Paul Laing met a cross from Swordy and he again shot straight at the keeper.

With only five minutes played, Alnwick lost James Jeffrey because of a hamstring injury and he was replaced by Richard Kirby.

The visitors first effort on goal came with ten minutes played, a shot by Seymour being blocked by Jason Belisle. A minute later a long ball played out of defence by Burn found Sean Joseph whose chip shot almost beat Belisle in Alnwick’s goal.

In the next minute Alnwick took the lead. Neil Catlow found Richard Kirby inside the visitors’ box. His shot hit goalkeeper Sawyer and the rebound came straight back at Kirby and into the net.

The visitors’ next effort came courtesy of a free kick, Michael Joseph driving in a shot from 25 yards straight through to Wa yne Belisle, who saved well.

James Swordy then headed wide, before he had a good shot saved by Sawyer.

At the other end, Sean Joseph was unlucky with a beautifully curled shot which, but for a slight deflection off a defender, was heading for the top corner of the net.

On 25 minutes a scramble in the Alnwick penalty area resulted in Jason Belisle blocking two shots, one from Watkins, the othe r from Seymour before Watkins blasted the ball over the bar.

Alnwick doubled their lead after 26 minutes when Gary Patterson laid off a good ball for James Swordy who drove his shot beyond the reach of Sawyer.

The main danger man for Willington was Sean Joseph, and again another a good effort fell his way inside the box, but his lob cleared both Wayne Belisle and the crossbar.

Paul Laing was unlucky not to score Alnwick’s third when his shot hit the post and Raper cleared the rebound.

At the start of the second half Alnwick brought on Ashley Mallaburn to replace Peter Saunders who suffered a calf injury in the first period. Within a minute, Alnwick created a good opening, a long kick from keeper Belisle being flicked on by Mallaburn to strike partner Swordy, but he pulled his effort wide.

Willington captain Watkins had his shot saved comfortably before good link-up play by Tenby and Sean Joseph sent in Seymour. Belisle reacted quickly from his goal line and was able to avert the danger.

Alnwick scored their third on 57 minutes, Mallaburn finding Catlow whose shot was blocked. The rebound fell to Swordy, who promptly despatched the ball into the far corner of the net for his second goal of the night.

A fourth goal for Alnwick by Mallaburn was disallowed by referee Mr Sharp, presumably for pushing. A good team effort from Alnwick, and a spirited performance from Willington.

Town: W Belisle, B Murray, N Catlow, P Laing, P Saunders, J Belisle (Capt), J Jeffrey, G Patterson, R Copeland, J Swordy, P Yeadon. Subs: A Mallaburn, R Kirby..
