Welcome to tonight’s visitors from Billingham Synthonia, who we have already met 3 times this season due to the F A Vase. We were unlucky at their place conceding a late goal to take it to a replay, and just didn’t do enough in the home time to get the win. The pitch may not be in the best of conditions following Saturday’s game, but if the pitch is deemed playable, we have to face the aftermath with the bad weather. Chewed to bits, but I’m sure Ian and Richard will have it back in perfect condition soon. If you’ve got spare time to come and help them, please let us know. All hands welcome!
Editor’s Column
There are times when you get home after a heavy defeat and question your own sanity. Why am I doing this? Is it worth it? Does anyone give a toss? I’m 30 years old an have probably got better things to do than sit at home on a Monday morning off work making a programme. One thing about Alnwick Town Football Club that has stood us well in previous years, is the fact that we know we won’t win every game, but if we’re
going
to
get
beat,
we’ll
do
so
giving
it
a
bloody
good
go.
Effort. Commitment. Determintation. Put your body on the line. Spectators come and pay to watch us at St James’ Park. We have over 20 season ticket holders, fans that come back every week for more. I went to Birtley last week with Skippy. I came out of the ground confused to hell. Relieved that we didn’t lose, baffled that we didn’t win it. We saw for 45 minutes arguably the best football we have seen from Alnwick this season. Absolutely
battered
Birtley.
But
then
Willington just didn’t happen. We had a spell towards the end of the first half where with a bit of luck we should have got at least one back, but it didn’t happen. Again though, a goal conceded seemed to drop heads. Did Birtley’s heads drop when they went 2-0 down? No. If we concede, regroup and start again. Tonight won’t be easy, but lets give it a go. It’s 11 v 11 and anything can happen in football. Cheers, Cook

Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. Match Report
It was definitely a game for the neutral at Birtley one groundhopper said leaving the ground, as both sides failed to capitalise on chances to win the game and take a share of the spoils. Birtley Town 3 - 3 Alnwick Town (Ross Straughan (OG), Smith, Townsend; Robson, Macpherson, Baker) The first half was all about the away side, with Alnwick creating plenty of chances and playing the better football. Lewis Robson had the first chance of the game, breaking through but Birtley’s keeper kept him at bay. Robson wasn’t to be denied though, as another through ball sent him clear, and he made no mistake smashing home the opening goal to put Alnwick 1-0 up. It was 2-0 shortly after, a deep cross was met by the head of Tom Macpherson who bulleted home to put Alnwick 2-0 up and cruising. Further chances came and went for the home side with a mixture of good goalkeeping and the wrong bounces keeping the home side in the game. Kieran Hogg almost made it 3, but his dipping freekick from distance rattled off the front of the crossbar. He had another chance a minute later, but this time it crept just over the bar. Alnwick were in control, but a minute before half-time Birtley were given a way back into the game. A freekick was swung into the box, and defender Ross Straughan managed to guide the ball past the helpless Callum Brooks in goal. 2 half, and it seemed as if the own goal knocked Alnwick’s confidence. Birtley’s confidence grew as Alnwick took their foot off the gas, and two freekicks in the space of 10 minutes had the home side coming from behind to lead 3-2. The first cross was punched by Brooks to the feet of the Birtley attacker who placed the ball through a crowd to draw the scores level. The 3 goal, again a ball into the box, was diverted towards goal, with Brooks saving, but only to the feet of another Birtley striker to give them the lead. A complete turnaround, and despair for the visiting players. nd
rd
Alnwick were given a chance to get back into the game following a red card to Birtley’s captain, who had tested the referee’s patience enough and was given a 2 yellow card for persistent fouls. nd
Alnwick were getting the ball forward but just couldn’t break through Birtley’s defence, who were needing the points as much as Alnwick in the relegation scrap. Just as time was almost up and Alnwick awarded yet another dangerous free-kick, with everyone forward Ross Gair whipped the ball in. The ball was headed across goal, and despite offside appeals, Rob Baker bundled the ball home to bring the scores level at 3-3. Heart breaking for the home side, relief for the away side. Alnwick should have been home and dry after the first 45 minutes, arguably their best football of the season, but the 2 half performance will have to be improved upon as Willington visit St James’ Park on Saturday 5 March in another relegation battle. nd
