The weather is starting to bite, and some clubs are going to have a headache fitting in their remaining fixtures. We still have a few midweek slots still free if there are any more postponements. Today is the first of 2 scheduled home fixtures, next Saturday we face Easington Colliery. Got to make home advantage count and start picking up points again, especially against clubs we expected to be challenging this term. #footballselfie is on today. If you’ve brought your son or daughter with you today, take a photo of them and put it on Twitter for a chance to win a Frontier FC training shirt. Best of luck! Cheers, Cook

Media Officer’s Column

For the first time since the 4-0 defeat to Heaton Stannington on December 29th, Alnwick will hope to take to the field as they welcome Billingham Town to St. James' Park, writes Media Officer Mark Craggs. Today’s opposition sit 12th in the Northern League Division 2 table, losing three and winning two of their last six games and haven’t played since the 19th of last month. The stand out player for Billingham Town is Craig Hutchinson who has netted 10 goals in league play this term. Alnwick will be hoping the restart to the season will bring a change in fortune after eight defeats and one draw in the last nine games that sees them lingering at the bottom of the form guide although they sit in 17th in the league. This could be the game that kick starts Adam Laidlaw’s reign with a fresh start where it's likely the form guide could go out of the window with almost four weeks without a This column is sponsored by: game. Confidence could be built by the fact that a 3-0 win in Alnwick’s favour last time these two sides met, with Chris Glass and a James Jackson double securing the win back in August. Today’s game also sees the #footballselfie competition taking place with a shirt of our affiliate club Frontier FC of Buffalo, USA up for grabs. Kick-off is set for 3pm at St. James’ Park, let’s bring a big crowd to the first game of the season.

Club History

Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.

Club History

The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. BILLINGHAM TOWN was originally known as Billlingham Social Club and was founded in 1967 by Tom Donnelly and Robbie Cushley. Tom, who played in Town’s first game back in 1968, has been secretary of Billingham Town since its conception until 2000 when he relinquished this post to become chairman of the club and subsequently is now life president. In 1968 Town joined the Second Division of the Stockton & District League and won the league title at the first attempt, playing at Mill Lane and the legendary slope – the top of the corner flag was level with the crossbar. Town stayed in the Stockton League until 1973 and won the Division A League title three times and the League Cup twice and also winning the Stockton Charity Cup twice. In 1874 Town were admitted into the Teesside League and remained members for eight years. During this time they won the League twice (1978-79 and 1981-82) and were runners-up once. In 1975 they were beaten finalists in the Durham Amateur Cup Final, but won the competition in 1976 and 1982. In 1982 the club took the golden opportunity of joining the newly formed Second Division of the Dryboroughs Northern League and changed its name to Billingham Town. After three years in the Second Division Town gained promotion into the First Division but were immediately relegated back to the Second Division in 1986. However, they bounced straight back in 1987 and lost to neighbours Synthonia in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup a year later. Another relegation followed in 1991-92, but they regained their place in the top flight in 1997-98 and have remained there since. After being runners-up in the Durham Challenge Cup in 1988-89 and 2001-02 Town eventually won the cup in season 2003-04 when manager Alan Robinson led them to a 31 victory over then UniBond side Bishop Auckland. Since 1981, ground improvements at the Bedford Terrace ground have resulted in new dressing rooms, a cantilever stand, hard terracing behind one goal, hard terracing and covered accommodation opposite the main stand. A refreshment room and a re-turfed pitch surrounded by an 8ft boundary fence around 5.5. acres of land. Bedford Terrace is now recognised as having one of the more attractive grounds in the North-East. Floodlights were installed in the 1992-93 season with the official switch-on match against Middlesbrough F.C. After sever gales blew down one of the pylons, Town installed new floodlights in 2003. In the summer of 2007 Hartlepool United invested in Bedford Terrace and completely relaid the football pitch to a depth of several feet and installed new drainage. The new pitch measurements and now exactly the same measurements of Pool’s Victoria Park. Also behind the scenes there has been a total facelift with new showers and central heating being put in the dressing rooms. Hartlepool play the majority of their home Reserve games at Bedford Terrace. In 2009 things turned sour with Hartlepool and when they took away the goalposts prior to Town’s first game of the season. Town’s committee hurriedly obtained some temporary posts and the game against Bishop Auckland took place. Since then the problem has been solved amicably. In the 2006-07 Town had their most successful league season under the management of Michael Watson, Lee Tucker and Mark Scott and just missed out on the league title after Whitley Bay won their last game of the season to beat Town on goal difference. Town could not keep the momentum going in season 2007-08 and finished 10th top in the League but beat Shildon 2-1 in the League Cup in a exciting

game at Seaham’s ground, but after the game the management team and the majority of the players walked away from Bedford Terrace leaving Town with a mammoth task for the following season. Town appointed Peter Mulcaster late May 2008 and he had the task of keeping Town in the First Division with a budget of zero and with only four players signed on. Peter managed to cobble together a team for the start of the 2008-09 season and managed to keep them in the league finishing sixth bottom. Season 2009-10 was a lot harder for Peter, but he kept the team in the league, finishing fourth bottom. At the end of the season Peter resigned and Carl Jarrett took over as manager. Carl brought in an influx of new players and Town hope to make progress in the league once again. After long delays over planning permission and hitting methane gas, Town finally built their clubhouse. The clubhouse provides changing accommodation for the junior football section plus a social club for after match hospitality and for local community to use. The work will not stop there as Town hope to provide better facilities for the community, both on the playing field and in the social and sporting facilities. Since the formation of the club and as a result of an extremely successful youth policy, Town have produced a number of players that have progressed to the professional game. Anthony Barrett (York City and Hartlepool United), Gerry Forrest (Southampton), Mark Hines, (Grimsby and Peterborough), Dave Robinson (Halifax Town), Tony Hall (Middlesbrough). Most notable of course was Gary Pallister who played for both Town’s junior and senior teams, before moving on to Middlesbrough, Manchester United and England, before returning to Middlesbrough until his retirement with back injury. Most recently is Town old boy Neal Bishop who originally played for Conference side Scarborough before moving to York City. He then transferred to Barnet and was club captain. In the summer of 2009 Neal joined Notts County and after a successful season will now be playing in Division One with the Magpies and is team captain. Over the past couple of years Town have had massive problems off the field, firstly with a dispute between the limited company and Hartlepool United and last season when the limited company went into liquidation leaving the football section high and dry. But with a new, strong executive committee they hope to move forward with a new 25 year lease on the ground. At the end of 2012-13 season manager Carl Jarrett left the club and was replaced by Tony Lee. Tony was putting together a squad for the coming season but was lured to Bishop Auckland and Town had to appoint a new manager quickly, with Paul Burton stepping in, subsequently Paul left due to pressure of work. With Paul leaving most of the players left with him and Town found themselves playing a Durham Challenge Cup game against Stockton Town with five fit players and two injured players. The seven players turned out and Town were beaten 14-0 on the day. Town then appointed Wilf Constantine as their new manager in the November of 2013. This proved to be a complete disaster as Town went on to be the whipping boys of the league. Wilf left the club in the February and Darren Trotter took over as manager bringing a bit of stability back to Bedford Terrace. Darren resigned as manager in the summer of 2015 and Town appointed Barry Oliver as the new manager for the coming season. Barry is assisted by fitness coach Norman Shute. With no budget to work with Barry is scouring the lower leagues for players who want to play at a higher standard.

Match Report

Alnwick slipped to a disappointing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Heaton Stannington with all four coming in the second half of a game heavily affected by the strong wind of Storm Frank writes Media Officer Mark Craggs. Alnwick Town 0-4 Heaton Stannington Johnson 57’, Hayton 60’, Scott 74’, Stoddard 79’

The first half was largely uneventful with each side having a shot a piece. Heaton Stan had the first opportunity as Gary Yates hit the side netting from a tight angle 10 minutes in. Tony Brown almost struck for Alnwick as he cut in from the right hand side, striking the crossbar with a powerful left foot drive. The only other attempt that went close, Jonathyn Quinn had a shot from the edge saved comfortably by Matthew Smith in the Stan goal.

Heaton Stannington had the majority of the second half, capitalising on the strong wind towards the Alnwick goal that Town failed to use to their advantage. Lee Johnson went close with a venomous dipping volley that just cleared the bar. Johnson did open the scoring three minutes later, his outside of the foot shot from around 20 yards out found the bottom corner to get Heaton’s first league goal since mid November.

It went down hill for Alnwick from then as Matthew Hayton’s cross from the left flank was caught by the wind flying into the top corner to double the Heaton Stannington lead on the hour mark. Alnwick had a chance to get one back as substitute Darren Riddell played a good ball into behind the Heaton defence finding Danny Lowes at the far post. Lowes got a good contact on the ball sliding in but Smith made a good save to deny the right back.

Heaton sub Brian Dodsworth when close from a free kick forcing Luc Glasper to make a very good save. The respite was short lived however as Peter Scott hammered home a volley off the underside of the crossbar to make the lead a three goal cushion with 15 minutes to play. The score was added to with 10 minutes to play, Alistair Stoddart finished hard and low at the near post to make it 4-0 to the visitors. It finished that way with Alnwick sliding to a fourth defeat in Adam Laidlaw’s reign of four tough games.
