The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor It was a fitting send off for Eric against Norton & Stockton Ancients. 3-1 down at half time to a side that will more than likely be promoted come the end of the season, yet we turned it around with a 2nd half performance that the lads of the 60’s and 70’s Alliance sides would be proud of. Hopefully we can reproduce that 2nd 45 minutes into a few more performances before the end of the season. Plenty of points still to play for. Plenty of pride still to play for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I’ve not been here for the last couple of weeks, so hopefully we can get back to winnings ways today. From what I was told we were unlucky not to come away with something last week at Whickham. Another late goal has denied us a point. We don’t tend to do draws this season! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hopefully some good news to come on the club website front in the coming weeks. For those that do venture online, you’ll have noticed the website has been neglected this season. Top and bottom of it is, I don’t have the time to update it as much as I would like to. I’m even checking with work to see if I can update on my dinner break. Our website designer is no longer involved. Personally I’d like to thank Tom for what he did for us in the beginning, getting us on the world wide web. Fingers crossed for a new beginning in time for the new season. If anyone would be interested in getting involved on the website front then please get in touch. If we don’t have volunteers at the club, then basically we won’t be able to have the things that this club deserves to have. In this day and age, we should have a website that is regularly updated. I can’t do it all by myself. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents BIRTLEY TOWN Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie

Defender: Gloire Mbiavanga Our pacey French full-back has returned for a 2nd season at the club. Young player of the year last term. Bags of potential. Not much English in him.
Keith and Linda Douglas
Defender: Tom Macpherson Super Tom is back from his ligament injury, and will be hoping to return to the form he showed before his spell on the sidelines. Defender / Midfielder : Danny Lowes Possibly the longest serving player at the club (on a full time basis now), Danny can do a job anywhere along the back 4 and on the wing. Just got a cracking tattoo. Defender / Midfielder : Kieran Hogg Nippa’s back after a brief spell away at Ashington, which never got going due to injury and management change. Hopefully come back with the same form he left with. Defender / Midfielder / Coach: Bryan Murray The 472 will be in touch with Muzza at some point to get their trophy returned. Retirement? Today’s Opponents - Birtley Town Birtley Town FC reformed in 1993, joining the Wearside League and, at that time, taking their place in the old second division. After just missing out on promotion in their first season for a place in the top flight Birtley’s second season was to prove more successful. The club won promotion as Champions. On becoming established within Division One Birtley lifted their first major trophy in 1998 by overcoming the newly crowned Champions, Annfield Plain in the League Challenge Cup Final. Four years later the club had a magnificent season in all cup competitions, lifting both the League Challenge Cup and the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup, they narrowly lost out on a cup treble due to being on the wrong end of a penalty shoot-out result against Jarrow in the Sunderland Shipowners Charity Cup Final. This was followed by completing 6 consecutive years in reaching the final of the League Cup. In 2002 the club merged with Birtley ST. Joseph’S Juniors to expand the club and develop a clear progression route from under 7’s through to under 18’s, and develop girls and ladies football. This has proven to be very successful and has enabled the club to be awarded the FA Charter Standard Community Club Award. In the following season of 2003-04 Birtley ended 57 years without a League Championship when they were crowned Wearside League Champions Unfortunately the League Title was not accompanied by promotion as Birtley’s ground did not meet the standards required by the Northern League. The recently constructed changing facilities, completed in October 2006, together with the addition of floodlighting has enabled Birtley to gain promotion, to the Northern League. We are now able to compete in the FA Cup as well as the FA Vase. The ladies team are also competing in the FA Cup. As ground improvements continue, this will enable the club to look at the future and to continue to progress through the pyramid system.
