The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor Two cup games in a week, all with the same end result of not being in the hat for the next round. Heartbreaking on both occasions. Alnwick Town have managed to hold 2 sides from the division above for 90 minutes to a 4-4 draw. Hold is probably the wrong term to use. We’ve been the better side for long periods of the game against Whitley Bay, and although St Helens came close hitting the woodwork a couple of times, their 17 year old goalkeeper has produced the goods to send them through with some fantastic saves. It was always going to be difficult playing extra time again. The lads went until the end though, but sadly it wasn’t to be. We wish St Helens the best of luck in the next round. With any luck they’ll go on to win it and we can say we lost to the eventual winners, but I somehow doubt it. A big thanks to our two sponsors on Saturday, John Gray Agricultural Limited, and Robert Porteous Roofing. You get no prize money for defeat in the Vase, and a nice bill to pay towards the visiting teams’ costs. All sponsorship is greatly appreciated. I think from next season the club will have to look into pushing match and ball sponsorship for every game. For the club to continue to progress we have to look at ways of raising extra funds. Sadly (and I hate it) money plays a big part in the game even at our level, and with the club being ‘out in the sticks’ according to some, travel expenses cost considerably more than other sides. Referees travel costs that little bit more as well. It’s not a cheap game anymore! Speaking of money, the club are now offering Christmas part-season tickets in time for Santa coming. Just £25 for an Adult, and £15 for a Concession, the season ticket covers all home league games after Santa has been on the 25th December. At the minute it covers a minimum of 8 games. If we have any postponements before Christmas then they will be an added bonus, Please spread the word and invite friends and family to come along and give us a try. £25 will get you into 1 Premier League game if you’re lucky, for about half the entertainment! www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents BIRTLEY TOWN Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie

Today’s Opponents - Birtley Town Club History Birtley Town FC reformed in 1993, joining the Wearside League and, at that time, taking their place in the old second division. After just missing out on promotion in their first season for a place in the top flight Birtley’s second season was to prove more successful. The club won promotion as Champions. On becoming established within Division One Birtley lifted their first major trophy in 1998 by overcoming the newly crowned Champions, Annfield Plain in the League Challenge Cup Final. Four years later the club had a magnificent season in all cup competitions, lifting both the League Challenge Cup and the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup, they narrowly lost out on a cup treble due to being on the wrong end of a penalty shoot-out result against Jarrow in the Sunderland Shipowners Charity Cup Final. This was followed by completing 6 consecutive years in reaching the final of the League Cup. In 2002 the club merged with Birtley ST. Joseph’s Juniors to expand the club and develop a clear progression route from under 7’s through to under 18’s, and develop girls and ladies football. This has proven to be very successful and has enabled the club to be awarded the FA Charter Standard Community Club Award. In the following season of 2003-04 Birtley ended 57 years without a League Championship when they were crowned Wearside League Champions Unfortunately the League Title was not accompanied by promotion as Birtley’s ground did not meet the standards required by the Northern League. The recently constructed changing facilities, completed in October 2006, together with the addition of floodlighting has enabled Birtley to gain promotion, to the Northern League. We are now able to compete in the FA Cup as well as the FA Vase. The ladies team are also competing in the FA Cup. As ground improvements continue, this will enable the club to look at the future and to continue to progress through the pyramid system.
