The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor The scene was set for a perfect send off for Clive last Friday night. Evening sun, lush green grass on the pitch, and his family all present. Sadly, the performance didn’t match the occasion, and it was a game we never really got into. You could argue that our opponents never really got going either. It had the feel of an end of season game, with nothing to play for. We do have things to play for though. A win today will move us on to 50 points. Our highest finishing total since returning from the Alliance is 49. We also have personal achievements to aim for. Shanka needs 1 more goal to be joint 4th highest scorer in the 2nd Division. A remarkable achievement for a player from our club. Tony Brown (if selected) will make his 150th start for the club in the Northern League today. Fan’s favourite, and this season installed as matchday captain. His game has adapted this season a bit following the retirement (sort of) of Muzza, and departure of Kev Elliott. Tony’s been stepping up when it comes to the more physical side of things, and can still ping one in from 30 yards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Today’s opponents bid their farewell to the Northern League today. Only one side is to be relegated following Blyth Town’s withdrawl from promotion, and it looks likely that Easington will be making a return following relegation a couple of years ago. Relegation isn’t nice. We’ve been there before, and we got very lucky a couple of years ago thanks to Ryhope not meeting ground criteria.. On a personal level I’ve seen Sunderland relegated more times than I care to remember. Best of luck to Brandon next season in the Wearside League. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I would personally like to thank all of our programme sponsors this season. Without them, we couldn’t produce the programmes, it’s as simple as that. We made a healthy profit when you include sales, sponsorship, and savings by printing the programmes myself. We failed to make the top 10 again in the Northern League awards. I’ll need help from everyone next season to get us there. Fingers crossed. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents BRANDON UNITED. Today’s Match Sponsor - Robson & Prescott Vets Today’s Ball Sponsor - Blackshaws Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie

The 472 The hardy souls that travel across the Northern League following the lads, through the good times and the bad. They’ll be back again next season.
Arriva
Goalkeeper: Sean Straker Straker is challenging with Luc to be the club’s number 1 for the remainder of the season. Stepped in to the side following the departure of Dan Mullen.
Chris Boyes
Goalkeeper / Coach: Brian Brooks Brooka is still here, coaching the keepers and is available in an emergency if required!
Brian Ellis
Defender: Ross Straughan Waited for his chance, and he’s taken it at the centre of defence. Looks set to be part of the back 4 for years to come. Solid. Defender: Gloire Mbiavanga Our pacey French full-back has returned for a 2nd season at the club. Young player of the year last term. Bags of potential. Not much English in him.
Keith and Linda Douglas
Defender: Tom Macpherson Super Tom is back from his ligament injury, and will be hoping to return to the form he showed before his spell on the sidelines. Defender / Midfielder : Danny Lowes Possibly the longest serving player at the club (on a full time basis now), Danny can do a job anywhere along the back 4 and on the wing. Just got a cracking tattoo. Defender / Midfielder : Kieran Hogg Nippa’s back after a brief spell away at Ashington, which never got going due to injury and management change. Hopefully come back with the same form he left with. Defender / Midfielder / Coach: Bryan Murray The 472 will be in touch with Muzza at some point to get their trophy returned. Retirement? What retirement?!

Today’s Opponents - Brandon United Brandon United were originally formed as a Sunday morning side called Rostrons, the name of the waste paper company where most of the founders worked. They began by playing in the Durham & District Sunday League in 1968/69, Joining the Third Division and gradually played their way up to the First Division. They were basically local lads, however the inclusion of Northern League and Wearside League players turned the club into one of the most powerful Sunday football sides in the North East. From 1968/69 until 1976/77 they were First Division champions four times, Durham County FA. Sunday Cup winners three times, then the ultimate, F.A. Sunday Cup winners in 1975/76, defeating Evergreen 2-1. One of Brandon United's highlights came in 1979/80 when entering the F.A. Cup for the first time, they reached the first round proper, on the way taking care of Northern League opponents Spennymoor United, Tow Law Town, South Bank and North Shields. In the first round proper, Brandon were beaten 3-0 by Football League opponents Bradford City, in a game played at Spennymoor. The club joined the Wearside League in 1981/82, winning the Sunderland Shipowners Cup. The following season they reached the quarter finals of the F.A- Vase and repeated the same the following season. On the 6th June 1983, Brandon United's dream came true when they were admitted to the Northern League's Second Division. United won the Second Division title the following season.. In 1988 United once again reached the first round proper of the F.A. Cup playing Doncaster Rovers twice at Belle Vue before losing 1-2. In 1992/93 Brandon played Seaham Red Star in the League Cup final at Bedford Terrace home of Billingham Town, only to lose after a penalty shoot out. At the start of the 1998/1999 season Brandon appointed Ken Lindoe as manager and the clubs fortunes began to change. Ken had won the Wearside League at Annfield Plain and, with the Plain unable to move up to the Northern League, he decided to use his skills at lowly Brandon. He brought a number of players with him to Brandon and started the team rebuilding job. He quickly assembled a team that could compete in the league and also play good attacking football. In season 2000/2001 he led the team into Division One as champions. A season of consolidation then followed, but with further strengthening of the team came Brandon United’s finest moment; the League Championship was attained in 2002/2003 and the club were Champions of the Northern League. The following seasons until the present day have been rather tumultuous for Brandon United both on and off the pitch. The couple of years following the League Championship saw management, players and committee all leave the club as finances stretched the club to breaking point. A few seasons of flirting with relegation finally happened and the club were relegated back to the 2nd division at the end of the 2005/ season. A bit of stability was required and following a further season of consolidation Adam Furness joined the club as assistant to BJ Heijmanns and the club again started to rebuild. Although results on the field were poor this really was the start of the club getting back on its feet football wise. The club finished bottom of the league but, with no relegation taking effect, it survived to play again in the Northern League. Younger players with a seasons experience behind them and the recruitment of some senior and more experienced players meant the club finished a very respectable 6th in 2008/09. Relative success caught the eye of other clubs however, and many players left the following season, most to 1st Division teams. The club has had to re-build its squad again. With a junior and reserve set up the envy of many other clubs, young players have progressed through the ranks to make first team football at Brandon United. Following another uncertain season in 2010/11, manager Vince Kirkup came in and assisted by Wayne Brandon were able to keep the club going. Season 2011/12 was far better with the club securing more wins / points and goals than for many seasons. Off the field, an ageing stadium continues to cause concern but steps are being taken and it is a very different Welfare Ground today from what it was just a few short years ago. A new perimeter fence kept out the scourge of vandalism that had blighted the club for so long. Grants, tirelessly worked on by the chairman and others, came through and the main stand was rebuilt and now seats over 100. A new hard standing now goes all the way round the pitch and there is terracing in front of the main stand.
Previous Match Report - 2014 Alnwick Town manager Derek Atwell praised his side for a ‘brilliant’ performance after seeing them smash Brandon United in a relegation six-pointer on Tuesday night. A Tom Vickers hat-trick and a brace from Keith Douglas inspired the lowly black ‘n’ whites to a 5-1 win at a snow-covered St James’ Park. The comprehensive triumph was the Northumbrians’ first victory in 2014 and halted a five-game losing streak. They moved level on points with Whitehaven in Northern League, Division Two, but remain fourthfrom-bottom on goal difference. However, Town pulled seven points clear of their beaten opponents, who stay one place below Atwell’s side. And the St James’ Park boss said the midweek victory was the best footballing performance he had seen from his side since taking over in November. “We were brilliant, from start to finish,” he said. “We kept the ball well and controlled the game.” Town were indeed impressive, especially in the second-half. They were defensively sound throughout and looked dangerous going forward. And Atwell was keen to stress the importance of the victory. He said: “We had to win. It was a big six-pointer and the win has lifted everyone at the club.” An influx of new players, such as Chris Fawcett, Gloire Mbiavanga, Darren Riddell, Chris Graham and Douglas, have added extra steel to the St James’ Park ranks – which was very much evident in the Brandon bashing. Ironically though, it was Vickers, a more experienced Town campaigner, who got the evening off to a good start for the hosts, opening the scoring after just three minutes. United levelled 13 minutes later when Stephen Moody was played through and he slotted past Daniel Mullen in the Town goal. The home side didn’t have to wait long to regain the lead, although it came in freak fashion. Vickers whipped a free-kick into the danger area and the ball hit the legs of United keeper Chris Sawyer, who redirected the ball into the net. United came close to equalising, but Mullen made a fine one-on-one save from Moody. Douglas made it three for Town on the stroke of half-time. Fawcett, who caused United trouble all evening, broke into the box and unleashed a shot which hit the post. The rebound fell to Douglas who tapped in. Town nearly extended their lead when Tony Brown’s fine effort from distance crashed against the bar. The host’s grabbed a deserved fourth in the 67th minute, with Douglas smashing in from just inside the box, before Vickers completed his hat-trick in the 75th minute. Alnwick: D Mullen, G Mbiavanga (D Hills), K Hogg, D Lowes, T Macpherson, K Douglas (J Jackson), D Riddell (B Murray), T Brown, T Vickers, C Fawcett, C Graham. Subs: B Brooks, L Dundas.
