What a difference a couple of games make to a football club. Two wins. Two clean sheets. Pride being restored to the club. Stokesley still have to come to St James’ Park, and if last weekend was anything to go by then I would hope we’ll get another 3 points. The game ended 6-0, but with some better finishing we would have hit double figures which would have been an amazing achievement. Lets not be greedy though, it was a good win and it was great to see the lads smiling again on the road. We’ve moved up a place to 18th and are level on points with Crook in 17th. Anything higher than that will probably be too far away points wise (realistically), but if we can keep on winning games for the remainder of the season then who knows?! Enjoy the game. Thanks for your support. Cook
Editor’s Column
Welcome to today’s match officials and visitors Brandon United. Brandon visit in very different circumstances to last season, where on the final day of the season, in the morning when I was printing the programme they were relegated. By the time I got to the ground they were safe following the resignation of Celtic Nation from the Northern League. They’ve faired better this season, picking up some good wins along the way and seemed to have stabilised the club. It wasn’t that long ago that they actually won the Northern League 1st Division. No mean feat by any means! ------------------------------------------------------------On the 16th we have (at present) our final Saturday home game against Stokesley Sports Club. The club are promoting ‘Kids 4 a Quid’ for the game, trying to attract a big crowd for the day. With a 6-0 victory in the away tie, I’m hoping for another positive performance that day. The kids are the future supporters of the club, and if we can put on some
good
performances
for
them
(and
goals) then they will come back. -----------------------------------Some brief transfer news, Thomas Butler has left the club to join 1st Division Sunderland RCA. Tom played 6 times for the club. Haway the Wick! Cheers, Cookie

Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. Brandon United were originally formed as a Sunday morning side called Rostrons, the name of the waste paper company where most of the founders worked. They began by playing in the Durham & District Sunday League in 1968/69, Joining the Third Division and gradually played their way up to the First Division. They were basically local lads, however the inclusion of Northern League and Wearside League players turned the club into one of the most powerful Sunday football sides in the North East. From 1968/69 until 1976/77 they were First Division champions four times, Durham County FA. Sunday Cup winners three times, then the ultimate, F.A. Sunday Cup winners in 1975/76, defeating Evergreen 2-1. One of Brandon United's highlights came in 1979/80 when entering the F.A. Cup for the first time, they reached the first round proper, on the way taking care of Northern League opponents Spennymoor United, Tow Law Town, South Bank and North Shields. In the first round proper, Brandon were beaten 3-0 by Football League opponents Bradford City, in a game played at Spennymoor. The club joined the Wearside League in 1981/82, winning the Sunderland Shipowners Cup. The following season they reached the quarter finals of the F.A- Vase and repeated the same the following season. On the 6th June 1983, Brandon United's dream came true when they were admitted to the Northern League's Second Division. United won the Second Division title the following season.. In 1988 United once again reached the first round proper of the F.A. Cup playing Doncaster Rovers twice at Belle Vue before losing 1-2. In 1992/93 Brandon played Seaham Red Star in the League Cup final at Bedford Terrace home of Billingham Town, only to lose after a penalty shoot out. At the start of the 1998/1999 season Brandon appointed Ken Lindoe as manager and the clubs fortunes began to change. Ken had won the Wearside League at Annfield Plain and, with the Plain unable to move up to the Northern League, he decided to use his skills at lowly Brandon. He brought a number of players with him to Brandon and started the team rebuilding job. He quickly assembled a team that could compete in the league and also play good attacking football. In season 2000/2001 he led the team into Division One as champions. A season of consolidation then followed, but with further strengthening of the team came Brandon United’s finest moment; the League Championship was attained in 2002/2003 and the club were Champions of the Northern League.

Opposition Info
The following seasons until the present day have been rather tumultuous for Brandon United both on and off the pitch. The couple of years following the League Championship saw management, players and committee all leave the club as finances stretched the club to breaking point. A few seasons of flirting with relegation finally happened and the club were relegated back to the 2nd division at the end of the 2005/ season. A bit of stability was required and following a further season of consolidation Adam Furness joined the club as assistant to BJ Heijmanns and the club again started to rebuild. Although results on the field were poor this really was the start of the club getting back on its feet football wise. The club finished bottom of the league but, with no relegation taking effect, it survived to play again in the Northern League. Younger players with a seasons experience behind them and the recruitment of some senior and more experienced players meant the club finished a very respectable 6th in 2008/09. Relative success caught the eye of other clubs however, and many players left the following season, most to 1st Division teams. The club has had to re-build its squad again. With a junior and reserve set up the envy of many other clubs, young players have progressed through the ranks to make first team football at Brandon United. Following another uncertain season in 2010/11, manager Vince Kirkup came in and assisted by Wayne Brandon were able to keep the club going. Season 2011/12 was far better with the club securing more wins / points and goals than for many seasons. Off the field, an ageing stadium continues to cause concern but steps are being taken and it is a very different Welfare Ground today from what it was just a few short years ago. A new perimeter fence kept out the scourge of vandalism that had blighted the club for so long. Grants, tirelessly worked on by the chairman and others, came through and the main stand was rebuilt and now seats over 100. A new hard standing now goes all the way round the pitch and there is terracing in front of the main stand. As we move into another new season with fresh optimism but with feet firmly on the ground knowing what is still expected both on and off the pitch. The work on the ground is not complete and funds are being sought to improve it further. On the pitch reserve and junior players make the step up to the first team and they are joined by new comers to the club as we strive to improve on last season.

Steve Mullen made it two wins out of two on Saturday as Alnwick put six past bottom side Stokesley. The game got off to a very slow start with the wind causing havoc throughout the entire game but taking a while to get used to. Stokesley had the first chance in the 15th. Josh Smith had the first of the two as he was unchallenged and given room to get forward, however when the shot came it was rushed by Smith and sliced well wide. With just under half an hour down Alnwick had their first opportunity and it was the one that opened the scoring. Rob Baker swong a low free kick into the near post. James Jackson flicked the ball home cleverly to put the visitors 1-0 up. 36 minutes down and Alnwick looked to add a second. Hitting Stokesley on a counter attack Jordan Miller flicked the ball onto Lewis Robson. Robson hit the ball after one bounce across goal, but it couldn’t find its way inside the post. On the stroke of halftime skipper Ross Gair whipped a ball in behind the defence for the run of Jackson. The first goalscorer tried to use the bounce of the ball to lob the keeper while under pressure from a centre half but the ball had a bit too much height findings its way just over the top. Alnwick did eventually make the pressure pay with the last kick of the half. Lewis Robson crossed towards Jordan Miller. The striker ducked leaving the ball to run nicely for Darren Riddell. He smashed home first time on the bounce to double Alnwick's advantage and send them in 2-0 at halftime. It was a quick start for Alnwick looking for a third. James Jackson worked hard to steal the ball but when in a position for an end product he decided to cross instead of shoot. The cross had just too much for Miller to get on the end of. Determined for a goal Jordan Miller flicked the ball beyond and outmuscled the centre half but his shot was well saved by the knee of keeper Dan Bowman. With 20 minutes of the second half done Alnwick did grab a third. The Stokesley keeper threw the ball out to Clayton McDonald. The poor throw was then teamed with a heavy touch handing possession to Lewis Robson. He lobbed from range over the out of position keeper adding a goal to his earlier assist, 3-0 with 25 minutes remaining. The fourth was added in spectacular fashion, Robson’s low free kick around the wall was spilled by the goalkeeper. Substitute Jamie Dixon was turned on to the opportunity, bundling the ball over the line just inside the post. 4-0 with 73 minutes on the clock. The fifth was actually spectacular. Tony Brown won the ball on the halfway line before well and truly beating at least four Stokesley defenders. He then slotted calmly under the keeper who had flown out to try and stop the run. The ball found the bottom corner to take the score to 5-0. Miller’s luck was still out as Alnwick went on the look out for number six. Jamie Dixon did brilliantly to keep a heavy ball down the line in play before finding Miller with a pinpoint cross. Miller took a good first touch but completely under hit the shot under pressure from several defender, giving Bowman his easiest job of the day. The rout was complete with the last kick of the second half, Robson once again the provider with Brown running onto his cross. Brown flicked past a defender and hit a left foot shot into the floor and out of the reach of the keeper. Brown’s second made it 6-0 with 91 minutes in the clock and that's how it finished with an almost instant whistle from the ref. Now two on the spin for the new coaching set up at Alnwick and attention will now turn to what will be viewed as another winnable fixture at home to 15th place Brandon United.
