Editor’s Column

Welcome to St James’ Park for our 2nd home game of the season. I hope the journey wasn’t too bad for Brandon and the officials. Don’t forget to pop into the clubhouse after the game for a pint and some bait. Well the entertainers look to be back! Goals at both ends so far this season, and those that came last week were treated to 10 of them! We’ve got massive potential this season to cause a few upsets, simply because we have more than 1 or 2 in the squad now that can contribute to the goals scored tally. It’s not often we’ll keep a clean sheet either, but it’s been like that for a few years now! Don’t forget that you can pick up a season ticket and save 50% on paying at the gate every week for an Adult. Just £50 for the season which represents fantastic value for money. If the opening game is anything to go by then how could anyone disagree! Concession price is just £25 for the season. And the club are starting to push the new weekly letter draw now. 3 letters will be drawn every Monday night at the Bingo in the clubhouse. You can choose 3 letters for 50p or give yourself a better chance of winning by choosing 4 letters for £1, or 5 letters for £2. Every week 50% of the total raised that week will go into the prizepot to be won, with the other 50% going to the club for the seniors and juniors. The maximum prizepot was going to be set at £1000, but having sought advice we can increase this. Once we have a definite maximum pot we will update you. If you’d be interested in either a season ticket or the letter draw, please ask at the bar and you’ll be pointed in the right direction. You can play the letter draw every week by joining the ‘book’ if you wish, or you can simply play as and when you want to. Those visiting from Brandon, feel free to enter, and just leave contact details on the ticket for in case you win! Thanks to today’s Match Sponsor, Web-North. They provide us with our excellent website. Come on Alnwick! Cheers, Cookie 472

Club History

Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1901, Alnwick St James’s moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions. The club competed in the North Northumberland League, Coquetdale League and Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. Clive Burn (pictured back row left) is the most successful manager in the clubs’ history, and Eric Hately (back row 2nd left) is one of the most decorated players in the clubs’ history. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.

Club History

The club now faces its 6th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. The club is moving forward, with new floodlights installed, our Junior section is moving ahead with plans for an expansion at Greensfield which could finally see the children of Alnwick have playing facilities fit for purpose. Brandon United FC - Official History Brandon United were originally formed as a Sunday morning side called Rostrons, the name of the waste paper company where most of the founders worked. They began by playing in the Durham & District Sunday League in 1968/69, Joining the Third Division and gradually played their way up to the First Division. They were basically local lads, however the inclusion of Northern League and Wearside League players turned the club into one of the most powerful Sunday football sides in the North East. From 1968/69 until 1976/77 they were First Division champions four times, Durham County FA. Sunday Cup winners three times, then the ultimate, F.A. Sunday Cup winners in 1975/76, defeating Evergreen 2-1. One of Brandon United's highlights came in 1979/80 when entering the F.A. Cup for the first time, they reached the first round proper, on the way taking care of Northern League opponents Spennymoor United, Tow Law Town, South Bank and North Shields. In the first round proper, Brandon were beaten 3-0 by Football League opponents Bradford City, in a game played at Spennymoor. The club joined the Wearside League in 1981/82, winning the Sunderland Shipowners Cup. The following season they reached the quarter finals of the F.A Vase and repeated the same the following season. On the 6th June 1983, Brandon United's dream came true when they were admitted to the Northern League's Second Division. United won the Second Division title the following season.. In 1988 United once again reached the first round proper of the F.A. Cup playing Doncaster Rovers twice at Belle Vue before losing 1-2. In 1992/93 Brandon played Seaham Red Star in the League Cup final at Bedford Terrace home of Billingham Town, only to lose after a penalty shoot out. At the start of the 1998/1999 season Brandon appointed Ken Lindoe as manager and the clubs fortunes began to change. Ken had won the Wearside League at Annfield Plain and, with the Plain unable to move up to the Northern League, he decided to use his skills at lowly Brandon. He brought a number of players with him to Brandon and started the team rebuilding job. He quickly assembled a team that could compete in the league and also play good attacking football. In season 2000/2001 he led the team into Division One as champions. A season of consolidation then followed, but with further strengthening of the team came Brandon United’s finest moment; the League Championship was attained in 2002/2003 and the club were Champions of the Northern League. The following seasons until the present day have been rather tumultuous for Brandon United both on and off the pitch. The couple of years following the League Championship saw management, players and committee all leave the club as finances stretched the club to breaking point. A few seasons of flirting with Relegation finally happened and the club were relegated back to the 2nd division at the end of the 2005/ season.

Opposition Information

ď ľď ˇ

A bit of stability was required and following a further season of consolidation Adam Furness joined the club as assistant to BJ Heijmanns and the club again started to rebuild. Although results on the field were poor this really was the start of the club getting back on its feet football wise. The club finished bottom of the league but, with no relegation taking effect, it survived to play again in the Northern League. Younger players with a seasons experience behind them and the recruitment of some senior and more experienced players meant the club finished a very respectable 6th in 2008/09. Relative success caught the eye of other clubs however, and many players left the following season, most to 1st Division teams. The club has had to re-build its squad again. With a junior and reserve set up the envy of many other clubs, young players have progressed through the ranks to make first team football at Brandon United. Following another uncertain season in 2010/11, manager Vince Kirkup came in and assisted by Wayne Brandon were able to keep the club going. Season 2011/12 was far better with the club securing more wins / points and goals than for many seasons. Off the field, an ageing stadium continues to cause concern but steps are being taken and it is a very different Welfare Ground today from what it was just a few short years ago. A new perimeter fence kept out the scourge of vandalism that had blighted the club for so long. Grants, tirelessly worked on by the chairman and others, came through and the main stand was rebuilt and now seats over 100. A new hard standing now goes all the way round the pitch and there is terracing in front of the main stand. As we move into another new season with fresh optimism but with feet firmly on the ground knowing what is still expected both on and off the pitch. The work on the ground is not complete and funds are being sought to improve it further. On the pitch reserve and junior players make the step up to the first team and they are joined by new comers to the club as we strive to improve on last season.

On This Day / Previous Report

 Alnwick Town 5-5 Durham City

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher look away now. It was a night for the strikers on Tuesday night at St James’ Park which saw 10 goals on a night when the new floodlights got their first outing.

Durham City took an early lead after just 4 minutes, with Kyle Patton flicking a corner into the roof of the net. (0-1) The home side though were back on level terms immediately after the restart. A flowing move down the right saw Liam Brooks cross in for Brent Aisbitt to head home his first goal for the club since moving from Newbiggin. 5 minutes in and the tone was set for the remainder of the game. (1-1)

A couple of chances came and went for both sides, Josh Hay going closest with a shot on the volley that went inches over, bringing applause from around the ground as Alnwick were playing some excellent football.

The home side went ahead in the 25th minute, with Liam Brooks slotting past the keeper to put Alnwick 2-1 ahead. McClelland almost made it three but his header under pressure went over.

By the half hour mark Durham were level. The ball somehow made it’s way across the box and David Luke bundled the ball in, the linesman judging the ball to have crossed the line. (2-2)

Durham then regained their lead in the 36th minute. Brad McClelland, who put in a shift on the right-wing, tracked back but brought down the Durham winger just inside the area. The penalty was converted by Samuel Norris to make it 2-3.

Alnwick thought they were level when Josh hay held off the defender and smashed the ball home, but the referee judged that he had fouled the defender.

On the 45th minute as half time loomed, Durham extended their lead, Samuel Norris tapped in making it 2-4. But the half wasn’t over, and into the 5th minute of stoppage time a Tony Brown freekick looped over everyone into the top corner to make it 3-4 at half time.

As the rain began to fall the pace of the game remained frantic, and it was Durham that once again extended their lead, David Luke getting his 2nd of the game slotting past the keeper McMahon. (3-5)

Game over? Not a chance with this Alnwick side who clearly have goals in them. Jake Morrison was brought on to replace Liam Brooks as a like for like swap on 66 minutes.

70 minutes in and Alnwick got back into the game again. Josh Hay was brought down in the box, penalty to the home side. Despite the best effort of the keeper to put off Tony Brown by kicking the ball away and damaging the penalty spot, Tony sent him the wrong way (4-5).

With the game inside the last 10 minutes, Schiavetta replaced McClelland, and Alnwick were pushing for an equaliser, which they deservedly got in the 85th minute. The ball was drilled across the box, and debutant Jake Morrison was there at the far post to bring Alnwick level at 5-5.

The home side thought they had won it late on, but Schiavetta was penalised for a foul on the keeper before tapping in. A lengthy delay then followed to allow treatment to the keeper.

As the rain poured down, referee Kevin McKitterick brought the game to an end. A cracking advert for non-league football. Alnwick played some brilliant one touch football at times in the game, and will undoubtedly cause teams problems with their goalscoring threat.

Sponsorship Opportunities



Here at Alnwick Town, it is the continued support from local businesses that ensures we are able to compete in the Northern League. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses and supporters. Just taking a look around St James’ Park, you will see that we have a lot of advertising boards from both local and national businesses. This form of sponsorship gives your business coverage at every home game, and with local photographers attending our games, you also have the possibility of your business appearing in the local newspapers or on the club website. Match and Ball sponsors are something we’ve really been pushing the last year or so. You may not know, but referee and assistant costs for Northern League games are usually £100 a game. If we can get Match and Ball sponsors for every home game, it goes a long way to covering our costs, and in return we advertise your business on our social media platforms. Player and Pitch sponsorships are our cheapest options of sponsorship for supporting the club, and the players always love it when they know they get a sponsor. The costs received from these go a long way to covering the costs of producing the programme throughout the season for ink toners, paper, staples, labels etc. Every little helps! If you’d be interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities please get in touch with us. You can e-mail us info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk , send a message to our Facebook or Twitter accounts, or speak to a member of the committee who will point you in the right direction.

Pitch Sponsorship



This sponsorship option is more for the supporters of the club, who can show their support by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch for just £2.50. 43 sections are available to sponsor. Filling all of the spaces will raise £107.50 for the club. Pitch sponsors are shown here in the matchday programme, and also on our social media accounts throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being a pitch sponsor, please e-mail info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk or get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.
