The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor I have already made 1 programme this season in memory of a club legend that passed away in February, and I had hoped I wouldn’t have to make another one anytime soon. Sadly though, news came through last Wednesday that Clive Burn had lost his long term battle with cancer at the age of 83. He would have been 84 last weekend. I have spoken with quite a few people over the years that saw Clive play, and they all said the same thing. He was an excellent goalkeeper, whose career was cut short due to a broken leg. The earliest photo I have of Clive is from the Alnwick Town Reserves side in 1948/49. He is always easy to spot in a photograph, about a foot taller than anybody else. Management followed, we think as the most decorated manager the club have had, winning almost everything there was to win in the Alliance in the 60’s and 70’s. After that, there was his garden, which some of us like to call St James’ Park. Before the bairn was born, I helped Clive with the pitch for about a year every Sunday morning. Whatever the weather, he was there, pitchfork in hand, working his way meticulously through the penalty areas, and then up the wings. First time I showed up, he gave me a brief lesson (watched me fix a divot, then did it again himself!), and from then on every Sunday was a conversation about football, past and present, largely Alnwick Town. I just did the Sunday morning, he was there pretty much everyday. Matchday was always a good laugh, when an unsuspecting visiting player dared to have a kickabout in the goalmouth. Quite funny seeing a player about a 3rd of the age of Clive grumble away from the penalty area as he approached with the fork! As a kid I was also a victim of this. It was common to run onto the pitch at half time, have a couple of shots at goal, only to hear “Get out the goalmouth!” “Get off the pitch!”. Caught every time! Absolutely gutted on a personal level that Clive has gone. If I had any Alnwick Town queries I could always pick up the phone and he would have the answer. I received an e-mail from the granddaughter of a player Clive was pictured with in the 50’s, On the phone to find out any info I could, I pretty much ended up with the blokes full career wrote down. For me that summed him up. Mr Alnwick Town. The thoughts of all associated with club are with Clive’s family at this time. He will be a massive miss at the club. Thanks for everything Clive. Gone, but never forgotten. www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents CHESTER-LE-STREET TOWN. Today’s Match Sponsor - Web North Today’s Ball Sponsor - Fine Fishing @ The Warehouse Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely good value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.
Tom McKie

Clive Burn - Awards 2010 & 2012 Clive Burn was recognised for his services to Alnwick Town over the decades, being presented with a lifetime achievement award by the club in 2010, and the Gazette’s Service to Sport award in 2012. Having spent almost his entire football career with Alnwick Town both on and off the pitch, they were both richly deserved awards. Even after an illustrious playing and management career, Clive stayed with the club as groundsman, and also as goalkeeping coach. The likes of Wayne Belisle and Brian Brooks benefitted greatly from Clive’s knowledge and experience over the years. Both were long serving players of the club, just like Clive. Even at the age of 80, Clive would be found at St James’ Park pretty much every day looking after his beloved St James’ Park pitch. There won’t have been many people like Clive, and there won’t be many in the future, giving up years of their own time for the club. RIP Clive.
Clive Burn - Press Clippings
I spent an hour at the Northumberland Gazette looking for some match reports mentioning Clive Burn. These are from 1952 in games against Morpeth Town, Shilbottle and Blyth Spartans.

Today’s Opponents - Chester-le-Street Town The club was founded in 1972 when a group of enthusiasts got together in a local public house and formed a football team which was called Chester-le-Street Garden Farm after the pub in which the idea germinated. The club entered the Newcastle City Amateur League that same year and played on a pitch in Low Fell because none were available in Chester-le-Street. However, after one season, they were allotted a pitch at the Riverside, Chester-le-Street which was to be their home until 1977. In 1975 the Cestrians joined the Washington League, winning the Championship, the Durham Minor Cup and the Washington Aged Miners Cup. By then flourishing, the team moved to the Sacriston C.W. ground in 1977 and were admitted into the Wearside League. The following years, they changed their name to Chester-le-Street Town Football Club. Over the next few years, the club won the Wearside League title and the Monkwearmouth Cup on two occasions. In 1980 the club moved to what is still its present home at Chester Moor. The old Colliery Welfare Ground only had dressing rooms and a perimeter fence. Over £100,000 was spent bringing the ground up to Northern League standards. A stand seating 160 and covered terracing were built. In recent years, new floodlights have been erected and new dressings rooms were built in 2000. The club was admitted into the Northern League in 1983 and won the Second Division Championship at their first attempt. Their best run in the FA Vase came in 1985 when they reached the Fifth Round only to lose to eventual runners-up Fleetwood Town in a second replay. Since then they have been relegated twice, the last time in 1996-97 and they again won the Second Division Championship the following season. The club is proud to call itself a family club, catering to the needs of the district by providing football for all. They currently run 20 youth teams, reserve side plus three ladies teams. They are building a new MUGA which is due for completion in September.
