Welcome to St James’ Park to tonight’s visitors Darlington Railway Athletic, who are what you could call a bogey team for us. One win against them in the Northern League in 11 attempts. Stats and records are there to be broken though, so hopefully we’ll make that 2 wins tonight. Thanks to tonight’s sponsors The Cryer and CBS World. 2 local companies who promote the #keepitlocal handle on Twitter. We use CBS for various printing jobs throughout the season, and if you live in the Alnwick area you will more than likely have received a copy of The Cryer through your letterbox. Well done to Tony Brown who made his 200th appearance for the club since we returned to the Northern League. I will try to get a complete lineup archive from the Alliance years but I can’t guarantee it, as I think it’s important to remember the history of the club. A club is nothing without it’s history (take note money clubs).

Editor’s Column

Well this is the final home league game of the season for the first team. There are still games to be played here at St James’ Park though (Reserves and cup finals) so please come down and get yourself a pint or two at the bar. It was a comfortable win against Stokesley on Saturday. It was one of those games that you expected to win, but still had to put the effort in to get it. Cruised the first half, 2 well taken goals by Dale Kennedy. Jordan Miller eventually got our third but we went to sleep and let Stokesley in for a consolation. Dom Schiavetta took his brace well to give us a 5-1 win. Stokesley, relegated, finished with 10 men as their player manager was sent off. Harsh I though as the game was all but over, the ref could have just had a word, and it wasn’t going to impact on the result. I felt sorry for them, 1 sub keeper, and 1 person who seemed to act as assistant, secretary, physio and chairman. It just shows how important it is to have support behind the scenes, and although we have that, we could always do with more. A personal thank you from me to all the programme sponsors this season, and all those that have bought a programme. To all the match and ball sponsors, player and pitch. It all helps to keep the club afloat. And also my better half Kirsty, who puts up with me having tantrums with printers and staplers on a night/morning before a game when they just don’t want to work. I’ve said it plenty of times, I often question my own sanity doing this, but I think of the likes of Eric Hately and Clive Burn, who gave up a hell of a lot more time than me and just got on with it. They are the people that made Alnwick Town what it is today. Haway lads, let’s sign off this season with one last win at home to make it a lucky 7. Back in August for more - Cookie

Club History

Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.

Club History

The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. The club was formed shortly after the First World War and started out in the Darlington & District League. Little is known of the club in the early seasons but in the 1919-20 season the club joined the Northern League. They found the going tough and after finishing second bottom in the 1924-25 season they returned to the Darlington & District League. The club went through possibly its most rewarding period in the 60’s & 70’s accumulating a number of honours. In 1964 they won the Darlington & District League and the League and League Cup double in 1968. Two years later they were North Riding Cup winners and runners-up in 1973. Then came the clubs greatest success, their triumph in the 1975 Durham Amateur Cup. In 1981 they almost repeated the feat, narrowly going down in the final. Darlington RA then joined the Teesside League and in the late 80’s were accepted into the Vaux Wearside League. In the 1990-91 season the club gained promotion from Division Two. The following season they narrowly escaped an immediate return to Division Two with a 4-1 win at Marske in the last game of the season. The club then hit financial trouble and in 1992 folded. The Club ceased to exist until the beginning of the third era. Martyn Jackson, while playing for CAS in the Darlington & District League decided to reform Darlington RA FC for the 199394 season using the players of CAS. David Woodcock joined Martyn as Manager for the season of 1998-99, and were rewarded for their hard work by winning the Darlington & District League. They were accepted into the Auckland District League for the season 1999-2000 and finished third in their first season, and won the R A Medals Trophy, not a bad feat for a team reformed only a few years before. The following season 20002001 saw probably the clubs greatest season. With a lot of new players and financial support the club was able to win the Auckland and District League on the last game of the season and pick up three other trophies, the club also reached the Semi-Final of the Durham Trophy only to be beaten narrowly 2-1. The club joined the Wearside League in 2001 finishing third and runners-up in the Durham Trophy, losing 1-0.

Opposition Info

At the start of the 2004-05 the decision was taken that all efforts would be put into gaining promotion into the Northern League. Work started on the ground with a band of very willing volunteers and very helpful local businesses. The lights went up first shortly followed by the new stand and slowly the ground started to take shape. The ground was completed in time and the work on the pitch was completed with a few games to spare and the eagerly awaited return to the Northern League was set. The Wearside league was won with 4 games to spare and a magnificent season was rounded off by winning the Sunderland Shipowners Cup against Stokesley at Brinkburn Road. 2005 marks a huge milestone for the club from humble beginnings. The first season back started badly with two defeats but the team slowly picked up momentum, after a victory away to Pontefract in the F.A. Vase they were rewarded with a home tie against Dunston where they were beaten after a replay but had the honour of having the biggest attendance in the country at Brinkburn Road in the second round. After a great unbeaten run in the League going back to November found themselves in a promotion place. More seats were put in the stand and another entrance to take the ground up to 1 st Division standard and on the last day of the season a victory at Alnwick secured promotion. Unfortunately, the Club was unable to hold its own in the first division and was relegated back to the second division where they have remained since. Nick Harrison, joined forces with Mark Scott and Jamie Smith succeeding Jackson and Woodcock finishing 15th in 2010/11. This new management team pushed the team to finish 5th in 2011/12 with 73 points and they continued the excellent work into the 2012/13 season, again finishing 5th with an additional 5 points taking the season’s tally to 78. 2013/14 was more difficult and despite a respectable 12th place finish Nick Harrison stood down at the end of the campaign. The new management team of Warren Moncur and Paul Bowman took over at the start of the 2014/15 campaign and they guided the Club to a 15th place finish having been among the front runners until the turn of the year.

Match Report Alnwick Town 1 Darlington RA 4 (2006)

DARLINGTON claimed third place and promotion with this win over Alnwick at St James Park on Saturday in a game which saw five goals, two players sent off and four bookings. The dismissals came after a midfield fracas in the 68th minute in which players of both teams got involved, the referee having no choice but to send off Alnwick's Gary Patterson and Darlington's Lee Johnston for fighting. The match itself was a good contest. Alnwick were guilty of slack defending for at least two of the goals and therefore found themselves always chasing the game. From the kick-off, Town stormed downfield, Jon Snaith linking with Craig Henderson who laid the ball off to James Jeffrey whose shot was turned out for a corner by James Chapman. Then in the second minute, Neil Catlow struck a 28-yard free-kick which goalkeeper Stuart Trotter took well. Five minutes later Darlington's Neil Jackson blazed a 20-yard shot over the bar. Wayne Belisle, in goal for Alnwick, made a good save from Steven Johnson in the next minute, but could do nothing to stop Johnson scoring with eleven minutes played. A long ball from the back by Charles Walton fell nicely for Johnson, who took it down well before turning inside the box and slotting in the opener. Two minutes later, the visitors doubled the lead. From a free-kick out on the left, Steven Bell's cross to the far post was headed back into the sixyard box where Johnson was lurking unmarked to turn the ball in past Belisle for number two. Alnwick came back well and in the next 10 minutes were unlucky not to score. First, a great crossfield pass by Jeffrey found Ian Common on the right who turned inside and let fly a left-footer, which just cleared the bar with Trotter beaten. Then, a good move between Henderson, Bryan Murray and Common ended with Patterson's shot being diverted goalwards by Gavin Keen, again Trotter having to make the save. Alnwick then found themselves even further behind after 22 minutes. Another cross in from the left, this time by Paul Freary, was headed in by Chapman under no pressure from the defence. At the other end, Murray pulled his shot wide from 18 yards before Catlow's deep cross was turned over the bar by Trotter for a corner. Catlow's flag kick found Jeffrey 20 yards out, but his effort missed the target. With 35 minutes gone, Darlington were awarded a free-kick on the right near the corner flag. Visiting captain Walton's kick found Freary, whose left foot drive struck the crossbar before being booted clear. Keen then set up Common but his shot was blocked. Next, Jeffrey hit a shot with tremendous venom from 25 yards which thundered against the bar from a Catlow corner kick. With two minutes left to play of the first 45, Alnwick pulled a goal back when Keen took advantage of some sloppy defending to round keeper Trotter and slot the ball into the empty net to cut the deficit to two at half time. Within three minutes of the re-start, Alnwick conceded again. Walton's free-kick from the right was headed home by Freary to reinstate the visitors' three goal margin. Snaith, who had been pushed upfront from midfield, made a good turn inside the area but his shot was blocked by Harrison with an hour played. Two minutes later, Belisle made another good save to deny Johnson his hat-trick when he turned the ball out for a corner. Patterson was booked for a foul on Chapman after 67 minutes. Then in the next minute, Johnston made a bad tackle on Patterson. The pair scuffled before a number of players got involved in what became a group brawl. After all three officials consulted, Patterson and Johnston were sent off and Belisle and Snaith were booked, as was Martin Brown for the visitors. With nine minutes remaining, Keen robbed Bell of the ball, but his shot was weak and Trotter made an easy save. Paul Laing, Murray and Keen linked up well, the latter's cross into the box just being missed by the stretching Common. As normal time ended, Alnwick thought they should have had a penalty when Snaith was pushed in the back attempting to head in a cross from Common, but the referee waved play on. In added time, Snaith had another shot blocked and Murray blasted his effort over the bar form 20 yards, but the game was all over, with Darlington gaining promotion.
