Editor’s Column
Hello and welcome back to the Northern League. A warm welcome to tonight’s visitors from Durham City, along with tonight’s match officials. I hope you all have a safe journey back and the usual roadworks on the A1 don’t cause too much trouble. So last season we finished with Steve Mullen looking after first team affairs on a temporary basis. Guess who is still here?! We’ve made a number of signings in the summer, most notably the prolific strikers from Shilbottle, Josh Hay and Liam Brooks. They’ve been scoring for fun in the Northern Alliance, so we hope they can continue that scoring record in the Northern League. Changes are happening off the pitch. You may notice it’s a bit brighter around the place now thanks to new floodlights, and also new electrics starting to go in within the clubhouse. We’re also building a new youth club / tea hut in the corner of the car park. The structure itself has been donated by Northumberland Estates, but it’s proving to be a complicated project to get back up again. We’ll get there in time so please bear with us. Season tickets are available to purchase tonight, just find me in the ground if you want one and I’ll get one made at half time. £50 for Adults and £25 for Concessions once again represents fantastic value for money. Finally the club are launching the Alnwick Town Letter Draw at the start of September. Tickets are available in the clubhouse, and it’s a great way to support the club on a weekly basis financially, whilst also having a chance of winning a bit of money! Thanks to tonight’s Match and Ball sponsors, greatly appreciated as always. Tonight’s mascot is Alnwick Town Juniors’ Luke Patterson. Enjoy the game, and Come on Alnwick! Cheers, Cook.
Club History
Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1901, Alnwick St James’s moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions. The club competed in the North Northumberland League, Coquetdale League and Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. Clive Burn (pictured back row left) is the most successful manager in the clubs’ history, and Eric Hately (back row 2nd left) is one of the most decorated players in the clubs’ history. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.
Club History
The club now faces its 6th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. The club is moving forward, with new floodlights installed, our Junior section is moving ahead with plans for an expansion at Greensfield which could finally see the children of Alnwick have playing facilities fit for purpose. Opposition Information
The club was first inaugurated in the 1918-1919 season and for that season only, operated in the old Victory league, which was formed in celebration of the end of the First World War. Subsequently the team was admitted to the North Eastern League where they played for two seasons before being admitted to Division 3 North in 1921. The club operated in that league until 1928, when they failed to gain re-election and were replaced by Carlisle United F.C. The club immediately rejoined the North Eastern League where they stayed until 1938 when, due to financial constraints, the club was forced to disband. They then became members of the Wearside League but again disbanded in November 1938. The club reformed in 1950 and gained admission to the Wearside League, where they operated until 1952 before joining the Northern League where they remained until 2008. At the end of the 2007/08 season, their second Championship winning season the club finally achieved promotion to the UniBond First Division North. The club has occupied five different grounds since it’s formation. In their first season the club played at Garden House Park (almost where County Hall now stands) before moving to Kepier Heughs, near to the old Ferens Park ground where they stayed for four seasons. The club then moved on to Holliday Park (named after the late Alderman T.W. Holliday), on Framwellgate Waterside, where they stayed until they disbanded in 1938. The club’s fourth ground, named after the late Alderman H.C. Ferens, was acquired when the club reformed in 1950. Alderman Ferens was for many years, prior to his death in 1975, President of the club and a generous benefactor in connection with the purchase of the land for that ground. Ferens Park was at that time probably one of the most attractive grounds in the Northern League. Set in rural surroundings its facilities included a comfortable clubhouse, a covered stand and floodlights. This ground also hosted the club’s largest attendance, which stands at 7,000, for an F.A. Cup Second Round tie against Tranmere Rovers on 7 November 1957 which City lost 0-3. City left Ferens Park at the end of their first Championship winning season in 1993-94 but because their ground wasn’t completed on time they were unable to join the Northern Premier League. After ground-sharing with Chester-le-Street Town for a season the club moved to its fifth and current ground - New Ferens Park. Situated in Belmont on the outskirts of the city the purpose built stadium is easily accessible from all major roads, boasts a two storey clubhouse, a 300-seater stand, which also provides covered accommodation for 600 standing spectators, and excellent floodlights. In the 2007-08 season, City were crowned Northern league Champions for only the second time in their history. This was rewarded with promotion and they duly took their rightful place in the Northern Premier League. In 2008-09, and at the first time of asking they became Unibond League 1st Division North Champions. The squad was strengthened during the summer months and yet another successful season looked to be on the cards when the Club's major sponsor pulled out after only the second game in the Premier League. With no funds to cover expenses etc. there followed an exodus of players. This left the Club only one option in it's fight for survival.
Opposition Information
ď ľď ˇ
Players, most of whom were aged between 16-18, from the local academy stepped in and although the Club finished bottom of the league with zero points (even though two victories were notched up) this ensured not only the completion of the fixture list but more importantly, the survival of the Club. The following season was one of consolidation as the club slowly started to rebuild and a lot of hard work and dedication, both on and off the pitch, saw the club gradually re-establish itself. The team management put together a young side and were rewarded with a creditable 9th position finish to the 2011/12 season. However the constant travelling to away games up and down the A1 and the costs involved began to take its toll and a difficult decision had to be made to once again ensure the survival of the Club. At the end of the season it was announced that Durham City AFC had resigned from the Northern Premier League. The Northern Premier League, the FA and the Northern League were all sympathetic and the Club was once again accepted as a member of the Northern League for the 2012/13 season. In December 2013 former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard took over Durham City AFC with a vision of it becoming a community club comprising youth teams from age 6 upwards as well as a reserves team. The intention being to bring success back to the Club which he believes is long overdue and he targets promotion to the National Conference League within 5 - 7 years. Durham recently moved out of New Ferens Park in November 2015 and are currently looking for land to build a new home in or around the City of Durham after differences with the landlords. The club have and will be making changes to what they believe is most important and that is to keep Durham City AFC alive and currently play their home games at Belle View, home of Consett AFC.

Previous Report - Alnwick Town 4-1 Esh Winning (11.08.2015) Alnwick secured their first 3 points of the season, and manager Jon Egen's first league win with a 4-1 victory over Esh Winning on Tuesday night. It was a game where the home side created plenty of chances, but it took the final 10 minutes to decide the course of the game. Alnwick took the lead through Brad McClelland in the 15th minute, who finished well shooting across the goal and going in off the post for his 1st goal of the season. Chances came and went for the home side, the closest being a Ross Straughan header from a corner kick that went just the wrong side of the post. Esh Winning felt hard done to with a goal disallowed before half time due to a foul in the build-up. The 2nd half was much of the same with Alnwick having the better of the chances, but they were made to pay when a well taken goal by Daniel Hill brough the away side level. With the game seemingly slipping away, it was Brad McClelland again who converted from a tight angle at the back post to give Alnwick the lead again to make it 2-1 in the 80th minute. The game was all but secured 2 minutes later, when substitute Kieran Hogg got on the end of a ball across the box, sliding in to lift the ball back across the goal into the top corner to give Alnwick their 3rd of the night. In stoppage time, the hat-trick was complete for McClelland, after the referee waved play on after a number of attempts to bring players down, and head rounded the keeper to make it 4-1 and secure the 3 points. Sponsorship Opportunities
Here at Alnwick Town, it is the continued support from local businesses that ensures we are able to compete in the Northern League. We have a number of sponsorship opportunities available to local businesses and supporters. Just taking a look around St James’ Park, you will see that we have a lot of advertising boards from both local and national businesses. This form of sponsorship gives your business coverage at every home game, and with local photographers attending our games, you also have the possibility of your business appearing in the local newspapers or on the club website. Match and Ball sponsors are something we’ve really been pushing the last year or so. You may not know, but referee and assistant costs for Northern League games are usually £100 a game. If we can get Match and Ball sponsors for every home game, it goes a long way to covering our costs, and in return we advertise your business on our social media platforms. Player and Pitch sponsorships are our cheapest options of sponsorship for supporting the club, and the players always love it when they know they get a sponsor. The costs received from these go a long way to covering the costs of producing the programme throughout the season for ink toners, paper, staples, labels etc. Every little helps! If you’d be interested in any of the sponsorship opportunities please get in touch with us. You can e-mail us info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk , send a message to our Facebook or Twitter accounts, or speak to a member of the committee who will point you in the right direction.
Pitch Sponsorship
This sponsorship option is more for the supporters of the club, who can show their support by sponsoring a section of the St James’ Park pitch for just £2.50. 43 sections are available to sponsor. Filling all of the spaces will raise £107.50 for the club. Pitch sponsors are shown here in the matchday programme, and also on our social media accounts throughout the season. If you’d be interested in being a pitch sponsor, please e-mail info@alnwicktownfc.co.uk or get in touch via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.
