Hello and welcome to the new look programme for the 2015-16 season. Tonight we welcome Esh Winning to St James’ Park for our first home league game of the season, under the new management of Jon Egen. Thanks to our programme sponsors old and new, especially to Alyn Brewis, who has once again jumped at the chance to be our main sponsor. Also thanks to our match, ball, player and pitch sponsors. It all goes to the club funds. I hope you enjoy the game. If you have any feedback to give regarding the programme then please just get in touch.

Thanks, Cook

Gift of the Gaffer’s Gab

The Opening Gambit I’d like to welcome you all to St James’ Park tonight for our opening home game against Esh Winning. We hope you enjoy our brand of football and come to as many games as you can. Saturday we visited Darlington RA. I selected a very defence based side to give us a chance to let opening day nerves bed in, whilst still causing problems to them with our counter attacking ability. Only Kris and Josh Willis were unavailable for selection. Unfortunately, we went down 2-0, due mainly to goalkeeping errors and poor finishing. However, our football was good and we set a base to build upon. Rob Baker had a good game at left back. It was nice to see some friendly faces down there too. Enjoy tonight. Jon

Club History

Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.

Club History

The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. Match Report Darlington RA 2-0 Alnwick Town Saturday 8th August 2015 - 3pm at Brinkburn Road

On another day Alnwick would have driven back up the A1 with 3 points, but missed chances proved costly as Darlington RA got their season underway with maximum points. One goal in each half proved enough for the home side. Capitalising on a defensive and goalkeeping mix-up in the first half (Holliday), and then a speculative long range effort in the 2nd (Hedley), were pretty much the only chances the home side created. But they took those chances. Alnwick created plenty, hitting the woodwork twice, goal-line clearances and goalmouth scrambles, but the ball just wouldn't go in. It looked like being one of those days when the Darlington keeper lost his footing diving for a Tony Brown effort, saving the ball with his face. Tony Brown’s quickly taken free-kick cannoned back off the angle of the goal, whist a Ross Straughan header hit the bar and couldn’t be turned in. It was a physical encounter which we have come to expect from Darlington RA in recent seasons. McClelland was forced off injured in the final 10 minutes, hopefully the knock isn’t too bad and he will be fit for tonight’s game against Esh Winning. First XI: Brown N, Dundas L, Baker R, Briggs J, Macpherson T, Straughan R, Jackson J, Brown T (C), McClelland B, Gair R, Riddell D. Subs: Glass C (on for Jackson), Lowes D (on for Dundas), Hogg K (on for McClelland). Unused: Donohoe C, Dixon J

Previous Encounter Alnwick Town 4-4 Esh Winning

Alnwick Town conceded a last-gasp goal as they drew 4-4 with struggling Esh Winning in a see-saw Northern League Division Two clash. Paul Basey scored a scorcher from distance with just minutes to go to claim a share of the spoils for lowly Esh Winning. It was the second time in less than a week that Alnwick have been denied at the death, after they were knocked out of the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup by an 85th-minute strike on Tuesday by Birtley Town. Esh’s late leveller proved to be a frustrating end for an Alnwick side who should have taken all three points against the second-bottom visitors. Not only were they denied late on, but Alnwick had also thrown away a 2-0 lead. Ross Straughan opened the scoring with a header after 10 minutes before Adam Shanks put the hosts two to the good with a fine individual effort. At this point, Alnwick were coasting. But two quick-fire goals by the visitors turned the game on its head. Basey pulled a goal back for Esh with a low shot from outside the area before Dean Sinclair levelled with a header two minutes later. Esh had the wind in their sails and they completed a fine comeback just before the break when Sinclair scored his second to put his side 3-2 up in the 35th minute. Alnwick weren’t out the game though and they made it 3-3 just before the hour, when Shanks scored from the penalty spot after Ryan Douglas was taken down in the box. This topsy-turvy encounter took another twist in the 66th minute when Tony Brown put Alnwick 4-3 up. Shanks was fouled in the area by goalkeeper Dean Caris and the frontman stepped up to the spot for a chance to complete his hat-trick. Caris saved Shanks’ effort but he could only parry the ball into the path of Brown who duly converted. The black ’n’ whites were heading towards all three points, but Basey had the final say with his fine strike from well outside the area with the match in injury time.
