The History of Alnwick Town Association Football Club Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was changed to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest league they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until 2006-07 when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history. The club have spent the past 3 seasons in the Northern League, in the process achieving grade G ground status, preserving the club’s position in the Northern League. This means that the club are able to compete in the F.A Vase and the Northumberland Senior Cup. With plans for a new sporting club in place for Alnwick’s junior and senior sides, the future is looking bright.

Programme Notes - The Editor What a game, and what a result for the club. Alnwick Town are through to the first round proper of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 2005/2006 season. In the process we caused one of the upsets of the round, defeating Pickering Town in the equivalent league above 5-3. It was a cracking game of football yet again, and I think for the first time in a while we had lady luck on our side. They had some chances (as did we), but they hit the woodwork a couple of times and we kept one out in a goalmouth scramble. On previous days all 3 would go in. Not on Saturday though. Yet again we’ve got the 2 lads upfront to thank for some fantastic finishing. The 2nd goal would still be getting shown on Match of the Day now for the build up, cross, and the header from Shanka. It was also great to hear the club on Radio Newcastle thanks to Paul Dixon’s roundup of the game. At 6pm on Saturday evening, those that were left in the clubhouse huddled round to hear the report. It must have been like that years ago pre sky sports, football focus and internet to find out local results. The only thing that disappointed me a bit on the day was the attendance. 40 paying, with 10 complimentary tickets for the away side, a total of 50. Posters were up around the town, mentioned in the gazette, and numerous times online. We are playing games that are full of goals. It is anything but boring, yet we still can’t get high numbers through the gate. I don’t think putting the price up £1 can make that much of a difference. You’re still handing over a fiver regardless at the gate. Or even buying a season ticket now still saves you a canny bit. So, our next opponents in the F.A Vase. Drum roll please….. Alnwick Town - BYE A bit of an anti-climax, but we are through to the 2nd round of the Vase playing only 90 minutes of football. You couldn’t make it up at times! No prize money for a bye either before anyone asks, I’ve already checked that one. Hopefully get one of the big boys in the 2nd round, and not too far away. I just hope it’ll be an experience we won’t forget. We haven’t been to the 2nd round of the Vase since 1975/1976. It’s been a while! www.facebook.com/ alnwicktownafc Twitter: @alnwicktownafc

The Chairman - Tom McKie Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to St James’ Park, the home of Alnwick Town AFC since 1900. A particularly warm welcome to today’s match officials, as well as the players, management and supporters of our opponents HEATON STANNINGTON Here at St James’ Park, we continue to improve our facilities every year, with both the ground and clubhouse being extensively upgraded since we returned to the Northern League, gaining a Grade G status in the process. You can now enjoy hot food and drink in ‘The Tea Hut’, which is located behind the top goal. Extremely goof value for money. None of what you see today would have been possible without the continued support from all of our sponsors, in particular Kitson Windows, MKM, Jet Wash OK, Genix Dental Care, Northumberland Floor Sanding, Mark Ryder Heating and Plumbing , Coast and Castle Estate Agents, and Sportsworld Alnwick. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers who work continuously throughout the year in all sorts of weather conditions. Without their commitment and effort the club would simply not survive. Also the ‘472’ who turn up home and away to support the club. Finally a big thank you to those who have donated towards our new kit this season following a bit of a disaster! The support from the local community means a lot to the club. Please feel free to come into the clubhouse to enjoy a beverage or two! I hope you enjoy the match and have a safe journey home.

Tom McKie

Tonight’s Opponents - Heaton Stannington A Brief History of Heaton Stannington Although officially founded in 1910, recent research has discovered that Heaton Stannington were in existence by the 1903-04 season when they finished fifth in division 2 of the Newcastle and District Amateur League. In December 1904 they resigned from the league and there is no further record of the team until 1910 which suggests that they might have folded. The club name originates from its links with the Stannington Avenue area of Heaton. The next match played by the Stan appears to have been on 24th September 1910 when they were beaten 4-1 by Sandyford. The club played friendly matches until joining the Tyneside Minor League in1913 and Northern Amateur League (NAL) Division Two in 1914. After the First World War, the club spent next 19 years in NAL Division One and gained their first trophies in 1934 and 1936 when they won the Tynemouth Infirmary Minor Cup and NAL Challenge Cup respectively. The first glory season came in 1936-37 when the club won NAL Division One, were Northumberland Amateur Cup winners and NAL Challenge Cup runners up. The reserves were also NAL Division Two runners up. For one season, 1938-39, the Stan participated in the Tyneside League and were runners up. Heaton Stannington were elected to the Northern League in 1939. They only managed one season in the league before it was suspended for the duration of the Second World War. The league restarted in 1945 but the club were elected, until 1946, as a non-playing member as their ground was being used by the military. After 5 consecutive bottom three finishes, the club resigned at the end of the 1951-52 season and joined the Northern Alliance until 1956. The next 16 seasons included involvement in the NAL, North Eastern League and the Northern Combination. In 1972 the club stepped up to the Wearside League and remained there for ten seasons. They were forced to resign from the league in 1982 for financial reasons due to the club trustees, who had formed a limited company in 1968, putting the annual rent up from £400 to £1500. The company then tried to build a supermarket on the ground but the planning application was defeated. In 1983 the High Court ruled that the ground belonged to the football club and the company had to relinquish ownership. The team were not members of a league during 1982-83 but then joined the Tyneside Amateur League (TAL) for one season and achieved only their second league title up to this point. The next 2 seasons were spent back in the NAL where they were champions in 1985-86 as well as wining the Northumberland Minor Cup. For the next 27 years the club were in the Northern Alliance, which became a 3 tier league in 1988 and saw the Stan placed in the Premier Division. After two relegations to Division One, the Stan achieved stability by spending 9 seasons in the Premier Division. The club won their highest level league trophy when they became Champions in 2012. In 2012-13, they achieved the treble by not only retaining the title but by wining the Northern Alliance League Cup and the Northumberland Senior Benevolent Bowl. For season 2013-14, after a gap of 61 years, the Stan returned to the Northern League. They were in the second division promotion race throughout the season and finished a healthy fifth. After some publicised delays, Grounsell Park now boasts new floodlights and a stand to complement the other facilities including a bar serving real ale. Much of the recent success is a result of the commitment and work of manager Derek Thompson and assistant Geoff Walker. The first trophy of 2014-15, the Shunde Worldwide Friendship Association Cup, was won in July when the Stan beat Shunde of China 17-2.

A Blast From The Past - Senior Cup Alnwick Town 0-7 Newcastle United XI - Report courtesy of the www.nufc.com Newcastle Reserves ultimately won their Northumberland Senior Cup tie at a canter, but only after enduring a sloppy first half in which their Northern Alliance Premier Division hosts more than held their own. In front of a good crowd at Alnwick's St. James' Park, United wore their blue away kit to avoid clashing with the home side's traditional black and white shirts and took 26 minutes before testing Town 'keeper Brian Brookes. Magpies forward Frank Wiafe Danquah made his way into the box at that point and saw his shot parried by Brokes, fellow striker Jonny Godsmark's follow-up blocked by a defender. And at the other end, a touch more poise on a couple of occasions could have embarrassed Newcastle, as the home side worked good shooting positions but were unable to test Fraser Forster between the posts. Kicking down the slope in the second half though, a revitalised United took just seven minutes to fashion a breakthrough, James Troisi smashing home a free kick low and hard from the edge of the box. That lead was doubled on the hour when substitute Mark Doninger shot towards goal after a long corner dropped nicely for him, Jonny Godsmark stabbing the loose ball home after the Alnwick 'keeper blocked the first shot. With the hosts starting to tire, the pace of Godsmark then took him into the box four minutes later and he kept his composure to finish well. 78 minutes in and the goal - and celebration - of the night arrived as substitute Kazenga LuaLua cracked home our fourth with a cannon of a shot from outside the box, before treating the crowd to a triple somersault. Next up was a smart finish from distance by Doninger just three minutes later, before Troisi netted again after jinking into the area and placing his effort beyond the 'keeper. Finally Ryan Donaldson headed in with five minutes remaining, to complete a scoring sequence of seven in thirty two minutes - not bad for ÂŁ4 admission. Alnwick: Brooks, Catlow, Common, Murray, Henderson, Bertram (Turvey), Patterson, Tate, Jeffrey (Keen), Swordy (McCann), Brown. Unused: Smart, Shanks.
