Media Officer Mark Craggs

A late postponement against Thornaby has delayed our new management team their first home game, so hopefully there won’t be any last minute hiccups! South Shields was a canny game. There was doubt the game would even go ahead because of the surface. After 90 minutes we definitely wrecked it! Can’t fault the effort of the lads that came along. Special mention to Callum Brooks who played around 20 minutes as en emergency striker following an injury to sub Ross Moore. We made if difficult for the big spenders, but ultimately came up a bit short. If we can get a full squad available, anything is possible. Cheers, Cookie

Media Officer’s Column

After Christmas off for the lads, we get back underway as Heaton Stannington make the trip north to St. James’ Park. Alnwick will be looking to bounce back after a heavy, but undeserved, 4-1 defeat at league leaders South Shields. A strong performance in the first game manager Adam Laidlaw was in the dugout with Ross Flintoft give Alnwick great hope under the new management team. Today’s opponents Heaton Stannington also had a game free Boxing Day meaning both teams will be refreshed from the round of games on the 19th of December. Heaton managed to pick up a draw in that last round of fixtures, taking home a 1-1 draw from Easington Colliery. The 12th place side have been far from consistent this season, picking up big wins against teams like Billingham Town, Darlington RA and Stokesley as well some big defeats to match seeing Billingham Synthonia and Chester-Le-Street. A sign of their up and down form can be found in their two games against Whickham. They picked up a 3-2 win at home before a 1-0 defeat away. Alnwick will be hoping the new signings can have the desired effect in a game against This column is sponsored by: a team at a similar level. Thomas Butler look good in the midfield with Jonathyn Quinn creating chances and Lewis Robson looking very solid at the back in the first half. After a strong defensive display in the first half at South Shields the lads will be hoping they can keep a struggling Heaton attack quiet as they have only netted two league goals since the end of October. Come along and support the lads in a big game. Don’t forget to take a selfie at the game and post it to Twitter using the hashtag #holidayselfie to be in with a chance of winning a shirt from our affiliate team Frontier FC of Buffalo, USA.

Club History

Alnwick Town Association Football Club was formed in 1879, and was then known as Alnwick United Services. The club was the only Association Football side between Dunbar and Newcastle. It is believed that the club played in red shirts with thin black hoops, black shorts and black socks. In 1900 the club moved to our current home, St James’ Park. The club’s name was also changed, to Alnwick United Juniors. Between this time and the beginning of the First World War, the name changed between United and Town on several occasions, and also a brief spell as Alnwick St James’s. The club competed in the North Northumberland League until 1923, moving to the East Northumberland League until 1936. The club was then renamed Alnwick Town, and would compete in the Northern Alliance until 1982, apart from 1 season in the Durham Central League in 1964-65. The 60’s and early 70’s were Alnwick Town’s golden years, winning the Northern Alliance on 7 occasions and a league and cup double 5 times. In 1982-83, Alnwick Town were admitted into the newly formed Northern League Division 2. In the 1988/89 season the club finished runners-up and were promoted to the 1st Division, the highest tier of the football pyramid they have played in to date. The club also elected the league’s first female chairman, Judith Draycott. Relegation from the Northern League 1st Division followed after 2 seasons in 1990/91. The club remained in the Northern League 2nd Division until the 2006-07 season, when failing to meet ground criteria and lack of funds resulted in relegation back to the Northern Alliance. A change in chairman, committee and management saved the club from extinction, and with the club spending 4 seasons in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, they were promoted back to the Northern League for the 2011-12 season. Whilst in the Alliance, the club won the Senior Benevolent Bowl and the Pinpoint Recruitment Cup. The club were also awarded F.A Charter Standard for the first time in their history.

Club History

The club now faces its 5th straight season in the Northern League, looking to build on the 2014-15 season points total of 50, their highest since returning from the Northern Alliance. But it was almost a different story. The 2012-13 season saw the club complete the ‘Great Escape’ on the final day of the season, which was also the club’s 1000th game in the Northern League. A 5-2 victory at St James’ Park against Washington secured Northern League status for the club. Jon Colley scored a hat-trick to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for the club. The 2014-15 season saw the club reach the 2nd Round of the F.A Vase for the first time since the 1975-76 season. Sadly, a 4-5 defeat at home to St Helens Town in extra time ended the Wembley dream for another year. In 2015-16 we look forward to another positive year, with a new management team in place and fresh ideas for the future. A Brief History of Heaton Stannington Although officially founded in 1910, Heaton Stannington were actually in existence by the 1903-04 season when they finished fifth in division 2 of the Newcastle and District Amateur League. In December 1904 they resigned from the league and there is no further record of the team until 1910 which suggests that they might have folded. The club name originates from its links with the Stannington Avenue area of Heaton. The next match played by the Stan appears to have been on 24th September 1910 when they were beaten 4-1 by Sandyford. The club played friendly matches until joining the Tyneside Minor League in1913 and Northern Amateur League (NAL) Division Two in 1914. After the First World War, the club spent next 19 years in NAL Division One and gained their first trophies in 1934 and 1936 when they won the Tynemouth Infirmary Minor Cup and NAL Challenge Cup respectively. The first glory season came in 1936-37 when the club won NAL Division One, were Northumberland Amateur Cup winners and NAL Challenge Cup runners up. The reserves were also NAL Division Two runners up. For one season, 1938-39, the Stan participated in the Tyneside League and were runners up. The Stan were elected to the Northern League in 1939. They only managed one season in the league before it was suspended for the duration of the Second World War. The league restarted in 1945 but the club were elected, until 1946, as a non-playing member as their ground was being used by the military. After 5 consecutive bottom three finishes, the club resigned at the end of the 1951-52 season and joined the Northern Alliance until 1956. The next 16 seasons included involvement in the NAL, North E a s t e r n L e a g u e a n d t h e N o r t h e r n Combination.

Opposition Info

In 1972 the club stepped up to the Wearside League and remained there for ten seasons. They were forced to resign from the league in 1982 for financial reasons due to the club trustees, who had formed a limited company in 1968, putting the annual rent up from £400 to £1500. The company then tried to build a supermarket on the ground but the planning application was defeated. In 1983 the High Court ruled that the ground belonged to the football club and the company had to relinquish ownership. The team joined the Tyneside Amateur League (TAL) for the 1982-83 season and achieved only their second league title up to this point when they won the league in 1983-84. The next 2 seasons were spent back in the NAL where they were champions in 1985-86 as well as wining the Northumberland Minor Cup. For the next 27 years the club were in the Northern Alliance, which became a 3 tier league in 1988 and saw the Stan placed in the Premier Division. After two relegations to Division One, the Stan achieved stability by spending 9 seasons in the Premier Division. The club won their highest level league trophy when they became Champions in 2012. In 2012-13, they achieved the treble by not only retaining the title but by winning the Northern Alliance League Cup and the Northumberland Senior Benevolent Bowl. For season 2013-14, after a gap of 61 years, the Stan returned to the Northern League. They were in the promotion race throughout the season and finished fifth. In their second season back, they finished ninth and qualified for the FA Cup for the first time in 39 years. Grounsell Park now boasts new floodlights and a stand to complement the other facilities. Much of the recent success is a result of the commitment and work of manager Derek Thompson and assistant Geoff Walker.

Previous Encounter

Heaton Stannington 3-1 Alnwick Town Alnwick Town suffered the Bank Holiday blues at Grounsell Park on Bank Holiday Monday, going down 3-1 despite a spirited performance. Alnwick went into the game with a number of players missing through injuries and other commitments, including Brad McClelland, Danny Lowes, Nathan Brown, Tony Brown and Josh Willis. And it got off to the worst possible start. With just over 7 minutes on the clock, goalkeeper Brooks played a short goalkick to Willis, who when under pressure played the ball back short, causing Brooks to react and bring down the Heaton striker inside the area. The referee pointed the spot and produced the red card for the young goalkeeper. James Jackson took the gloves, but was unable to save the resulting penalty (despite asking for no 'blasties'). Despite having a man advantage, Heaton never really troubled the deputising goalkeeper, and Alnwick had the best chance of the half. Riddell rode a couple of challenges, took the ball around the advancing goalkeeper, but somehow managed to steer the ball wide of the open goal. The 2nd half saw a debut for Paul Nisbet, on in place of James Jackson to take his turn in goal, and Ross Gair came on for Chris Glass. Chances came and went for the home side, as it looked as though tiring legs and the extra man would start to take advantage. The away side have other ideas though, and Jamie Dixon drove at the Heaton defence, a cross came in for Jordan Miller to control and smash home on his debut to level the scores at 1-1. It was the least the lone front man deserved on his debut putting in a fine performance. With ten minutes to go though, Alnwick created their own mistakes and Heaton regained the advantage. From a foul thrown, Heaton broke down the other end and beat a helpless Nisbet in goal, who had made 2 top class saves earlier in the half. As time ticked away, the away side couldn't break though the Heaton backline and goalkeeper, and in the dying seconds got their 3rd, with the ball being lobbed over the advancing Nisbet. A harsh scoreline on the visitors for their efforts playing with 10 men for over 80 minutes, but they gave themselves too much to do from the start. Team: Brooks C, Dundas L, Baker R, Dixon J, Macpherson T, Straughan R, Riddell D, Willis K, Miller J, Glass C, Jackson J Subs: Nisbet P (on for Jackson), Gair R (on for Glass), Briggs J (on for Dixon) Unused: Moore R
